Henri Downgraded to Tropical Storm; Misses New York Direct Hit
Outgoing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced Sunday that President Joe Biden approved a pre-landfall disaster declaration for 26 counties that will be impacted by Tropical Storm Henri as the storm churned 35 miles southeast of Montauk Point. The former Governor directed state agencies to deploy additional emergency response assets to Long Island, NYC and Hudson Valley as Tropical Storm Henri impacted New York State with surge and heavy rain. He stated, “We’re on it all today,
all through tonight, until the storm passes and until we know what kind of damage has been done, and we ask you to remain attentive and cautious and smart, do what you need to do. Please, don’t be the cynical man and the storm.” Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul who was noticeably absent from Sunday’s press conference said via Twitter, “Flooding remains one of the most serious threats of #Henri. Remember—never drive through
floodwaters. Just six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars. Stay safe, New York!” The Federal Disaster Declaration was issued for Albany, Bronx, Broome, Chenango, Columbia, Delaware, Dutchess, Greene, Kings, Montgomery, Nassau, New York, Orange, Otsego, Putnam, Queens, Rensselaer, Richmond, Rockland, Saratoga, Schenectady, Schoharie, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester Counties.

Don’t Fall for Social Security Administration Telephone Scams (SSN) or account, a citizen will be arrested or face other legal action if they fail to call a provided phone number to address the issue. This is a scam; citizens should not engage with these calls or provide any personal information.

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to bring to the attention of Suffolk County residents a telephone impersonation scheme that exploits the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) reputation and authority. The Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG) continues to receive reports from across the country about fraudulent phone calls from people claiming to be from SSA. Recent reports have indicated that unknown callers are using increasingly threatening language in these calls. The callers state, due to improper or illegal activity with a citizen’s Social Security number
According to the Social Security Administration, SSA employees do contact citizens, generally those who have ongoing business with SSA, by telephone for customerservice purposes. However, SSA employees will never threaten you for information; they will not state that you face potential arrest or other legal action if you fail to provide information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent, and you should just hang up. The OIG recently warned that some of these impersonation calls have “spoofed” SSA’s national customer service phone number, displaying 1-800-772-1213 as the incoming number on caller ID. Residents are urged to be extremely cautious, and to avoid providing information such as your Social Security number or bank account numbers to unknown persons over the phone or internet unless you are certain of who is receiving it. If you receive a suspicious call from someone alleging to be from SSA, you should report that information to the OIG at 1-800-269-0271 or online at https://oig.ssa.gov.
August 25, 2021 The Honorable Kathy Hochul Governor, State of New York New York State Capitol Building Albany, New York 12224 Dear Governor Hochul: Congratulations on becoming the new governor of our Empire State. I wish you well in your new administration. I am writing to request the creation of a special commission to combat the growing drug epidemic in our state. With another wave of deaths across Suffolk County from Fentanyl and other illicit drugs, I believe this should be one of your first acts as our new chief executive. We need to find out how these lethal drugs are getting into New York and create a battle plan with all branches of law enforcement to stop them. With a deadly batch of cocaine laced with Fentanyl causing at least eight overdoses and six deaths recently, we need to act fast to save lives. I believe an obvious place to look is the open border between the U.S. and Mexico which has been an unrestricted route for illegal immigrants, human trafficking and drugs. Please join me and concerned residents across the state in taking a stand to stop the flow of people and contraband over our border and into our communities. Deadly narcotics are pouring into our country and are killing our children, friends and neighbors. We need to join together and stop it. U.S. Customs and Border Protection has reported a dramatic increase in border encounters this year and videos show anyone and anything coming into the country unquestioned. Is this the entry point of the Fentanyl, cocaine and other drugs that are destroying our communities? We are at a crisis level and I’m hoping you take the lead as governor to help us find some answers. The new commission should consist of local law enforcement, state and federal drug interdiction agencies and representatives of Border Protection to give us the facts we need to put together a comprehensive action plan. We know something is killing us; we just need to find out how it’s getting here and put a stop to it. To also better protect New Yorkers, I am asking you to intervene on the free flow of unvaccinated and untested immigrants coming over the border and ending up in our state. We need to know how many border crossers are being transported to New York and how the COVID precautions are being applied to them. Our freedoms—the ability to dine out, travel, worship, go to school, shop, and live our lives—were severely restricted during the pandemic. We were compelled to stay away from each other, wear masks, get tested and get vaccinated. Are these same requirements being made of the people who are illegally crossing into the United States from countries all over the world? Now with the collapse of Afghanistan, we also need to know how many refugees are being brought here as well, and whether they have received the proper COVID screening. A primary role of government is keeping the public safe. With all that’s going on with drug overdoses and the crisis at the border, I’m asking you to make public safety your top priority as governor. Sharrock Challenges Caracappa in Race for 4th LD By Barbara LaMonica
In the race for Suffolk County’s 4th Legislative District, (LD), Dawn Sharrock is challenging incumbent Nick Caracappa. Sharrock will appear on the Democrat and Working Families party lines of the ballot. Caracappa, a registered Conservative, will appear on both Conservative and Republican lines. Caracappa won a majority of the voting electorate during a special election in November 2020 to fill the unexpired term of the late Tom Muratore. Caracappa cites one of his biggest accomplishments during his tenure as Suffolk County Legislator when he brought bipartisan support from elected officials at state and county levels to send a message to Governor Cuomo to step up a timeline for Suffolk to receive funding to repair damaged and pot hole-riddled roadways. “The governor’s timeline was unacceptable, “Caracappa asserted, “so we wrote a letter to the governor, then we held a press conference that was attended by elected officials, (and we didn’t play party politics), we also had first responders, motorcycle groups, civics, chambers, community leaders and citizens who all gathered enmasse to send a clear message to the governor that we need our roads and infrastructure fixed.” Caracappa said Cuomo added $30 million to repair roadways and moved the timeline up from 2024-25 to 2023-24. “Our roads are a danger and an embarrassment to our residents and tourists who come to Suffolk County to enjoy our county parks, beaches and downtowns,” Caracappa added. “Our residents don’t want to hear ‘that’s the state or that’s the town,’” he said. “My constituents
want to know what’s getting done, and now the result is unbelievable.” A staunch supporter of men and women in blue, Caracappa said he voted for some forms of police reform. “I support law enforcement 100%,” Caracappa said, “but there were some issues going on that I do not support.” Caracappa said he also supports sewers and infrastructure, with emphasis on coastal cities and water tables. “We have to stop doing the studies and work to create jobs to protect our waterways and the aquifer - we just need to get these in the ground.” Caracappa recounts a study that was conducted when his mother and former Suffolk County Legislator, the late Rose Caracappa, was in office in 1995. “That project is just getting out now,” he said. “We need to get the work done in communities where there’s rain runoff because if we have sewers, that will result in a reduction of nitrogen levels hitting those waterways.” Caracappa asserts he’s the best candidate to continue filling the position of 4th District Legislator. With 34 years experience as Suffolk County Water Authority and having served as President of Local 353 (Utility Workers Union of America), for greater than 16 years, Caracappa, a self proclaimed supporter of labor, says he brings a wealth of negotiating experience to the table. He served seven years on the Middle Country School Board. “You have to be committed and not beholden to anyone. I’m a team player but I vote for what’s in the best interest for the residents of Suffolk County.” Asked what’s on the docket for the next two years if he is reelected, Caracappa
explained, “I’m looking forward to serving the next 12 years. I love the work that I do to service the people of Suffolk County and I have a passion for it. I’m going to continue to push for sewer installations, and to protect the environment and purchase lands.” From a fiscal standpoint, Caracappa commented, “We need to be more financially sound and get out of the basement. We’ve got to get

The interest we pay is absurd because of our poor bond rating.” Caracappa said he is going to push “very hard” for legislation that would offer first choice to local businesses in awarding bids or contracts. “We have to employ local labor and local small businesses and give them first choice in order to sustain our communities,” Caracappa said. “We give millions of dollars in contracts to out

Asked what will be priorities on her agenda if elected, Sharrock underscored unions as one of her main focuses: “We need to make local union jobs a priority and work with local unions and contractors/builders to grow the apprenticeship program. We need to have opportunities so future generations are able to stay on the Island and plant roots here.” Sharrock pointed out that if the county gives incentives to builders to build locally within the county, then incentives must also be offered for workers. “I want to also make sure everyone is aware of the mental health care available while also growing the access available to our community members,” Sharrock said. “We need to have smart planning when it comes to building in our community so that we are creating safe and sustainable neighborhoods.” Sharrock said she’s the better candidate over her incumbent opponent, stating: “I bring leadership qualities that have led me to successfully advocating for my community.” Twice elected to the Middle Country School Board, Sharrock said serving as chair of the legislative committee, that she was “instrumental in having the swing arm camera legislation passed in Suffolk County which, in turn, not only keeps children safe, but brings a new source of revenue to the county.” Sharrock, who said she is “confident and passionate about winning this legislative race,” added, “We need to start building on the new, and I am the change we need to do just that.” Sharrock said she is “confident and passionate about winning this race.” janelane4@aol.com

A Bandstand Comes to Medford By Joan Travan
An exciting time in Medford, as residents gathered to hear the first concert of the season at Medford Memorial Park with its new bandstand. Many people were involved making this dream come to fruition. First the Suffolk County Grant, skillfully written by Nerina Sperl (treasurer of the Medford Civic Association) with a matching grant from Brookhaven Town. The Medford Chamber of Commerce with many others helped getting it all together, bringing great music on a perfect summer evening to all who attended. New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco, and Kathy LoSchiavo helped Ms. Sperl cut the ribbon officially opening the festivities. Compliments to the Brookhaven Town Parks department for its excellent preparation for the concert; the grounds were in tip-top shape. Many thanks to Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilmen Neil Foley and Mike Loguercio for supporting this project which will bring great times to the Medford community. Located on Rt. 112 next to the train station- it truly is a “sense of place” for many years to come.

Volunteers led by Ray Hopp and Samantha Soccorso, have surpassed eighty thousand hours of volunteer service to their community. Over the past twenty seven years volunteers have worked on seventy seven projects totaling over eighty thousand hours of volunteer time. Deputy Director,

Disney’s Newsies Will Open at Patchogue Theatre to Fully Vaccinated Audiences August 25th The Gateway will open NEWSIES to fully vaccinated audiences beginning August 25th at Patchogue Theatre. The entire company including all actors, musicians, technical support personnel, directors, designers, box office and admin staff have all been fully vaccinated for Covid-19. Executive Artistic Director Paul Allan says “This is an important and positive step we have taken to do our part to put an end to the global pandemic that has crippled the world, and especially the entertainment industry for the past 16 months. NEWSIES will be a great way to come out and enjoy a full-scale Broadway Musical surrounded by theater patrons who are also doing their part to stay safe and can be comforted to know that there are no exceptions to the vaccination policy. As previously released, Disney’s Newsies, presented by The Gateway, will be the first full-scale professional production at the Patchogue Theatre since shutting down due to the pandemic. It will run from August 25 through September 11th. Disney’s Newsies is a musical based on the 1992 motion picture “Newsies” and was inspired by the true story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 - the pivotal moment that forced William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer to change their view of newsies as sweatshop laborers to human beings looking to make a living. It features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner, Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). Featuring the now classic songs “Carrying the Banner,” “Seize the Day,” and “Santa Fe.” Newsies is packed with non-stop thrills and a timeless message, perfect for the whole family and every audience. Set in turn-of-the-century New York City, the show is the rousing tale of Jack
performances on the Broadway stage before touring. After touring, the film “Newsies: The Broadway Musical” was released in 2017. Newsies will star Alex Prakken as Jack Kelly. Mr. Prakken appeared in the Broadway production as Jack and has performed the role many times regionally. Katherine will be played by The Gateway veteran, Molly Rushing. Molly appeared in the title role of The Gateway’s 2015 Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and recently understudied the title role of Broadway’s Anastasia. Other principal roles include Aurelia

According to the East Moriches Life Scout, a donation of $80 will fund bricks representing one of the many foreign wars fought by local heroes, however any contribution will be put towards the memorial. The effort will help Louis become an Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in scouting.
South Country to Offer Seal of Civic Readiness Program Beginning in September, South Country Central School District students will have the unique opportunity to earn a prestigious New York State Education Department Seal of Civic Readiness on their diplomas. The district is one of only a handful on Long Island to offer the new Civic Readiness pathway, an all-encompassing program that teaches students how to apply civic knowledge, skills and mindsets to make positive impacts in their school, community and the world. It also aims to strengthen relationships with community partners and civic leaders. “Civic readiness has always been a critical goal of our school district,” said Jackie O’Hagan, director of humanities. “It was only natural that we would seek approval to participate in the Seal of Civic Readiness pilot program with the New York State Education Department.” O’Hagan is leading the project in South Country, along with Bellport High School social studies teacher Andrew Budris, who also serves on the NYSED Civic Readiness Task Force. Prior to being accepted into the state’s civic readiness program, the district already boasted the robust
Capstone Generation Citizen program at its middle school, led by teacher Megan Bevan; multiple Advanced Placement and honors social studies courses; and impressive high schoollevel electives that promote civic engagement. To provide alternative pathways for students to earn a Civic Readiness seal, the district created a Civic Readiness Committee and will introduce new high school courses in the fall, including Facing History in Ourselves and the High School Capstone Project. “It was very important to us to ensure that the program lends equity and that all students have access and the opportunity to earn the seal,” said O’Hagan. Students begin the main pathway in the seventh grade by participating in the district’s Generation Citizen program. They earn the program’s requisite six points by completing civics-related activities, which include courses, electives and learning projects based on the curricular theme. “We look forward to seeing what our students accomplish through this program,” added O’Hagan.
The East Moriches Fire Department has been notified by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) that it will be receiving $204,000.00 under the 2020 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. The AFG program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s FEMA in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration. According to Fire Chief William Youngs, the department filed the 2020 AFG application based upon a strategy to upgrade the department’s self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The funding will cover the acquisition of 30 new SCBA units, 60 air cylinders, and 45 face pieces. This new equipment will bring the department into compliance with the current National Fire Protection Association standards for firefighter breathing apparatus without negatively impacting the local fire district budget. The AFG awards are very competitive between fire services, EMS organizations and state fire training organizations. Awards are further categorized by career, combination and volunteer fire departments with funding calculated based upon the population served. The East Moriches Fire Department award is 95% federal with a 5% match of local funds; thus, the full value of the fire department’s award is $214,200.00. According to Chief Youngs and Board of Fire Commissioners Chairman Michael Mazarakis, without the financial benefit which arises from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant, the cost of purchasing new SCBA equipment would be borne solely by the taxpayers of the fire district. The current SCBA is 12 years old, experiencing increased maintenance costs, and fails to meet current NFPA firefighter safety standards. Both Chief Youngs and Commissioner Mazarakis affirmed that the safety of our firefighters and that of the community served will always be our first priority.

The Green Amendment -- on the Ballot This Election Day
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN On the ballot in New York State on Election Day this November 2 will be what is being called the Green Amendment. It would be an important and powerful addition to the New York State Constitution. The Green Amendment declares: “Each person shall have a right to clean air and water, and a healthful environment.” Its prime sponsor in the State Assembly is Steve Englebright of Setauket, chair of the Assembly’s Environmental Conservation Committee and an official from Suffolk long deeply committed to environmental causes. “It is simple,” he says. It would allow every New Yorker “to know that you can raise a family and pass on to the next generation a clean and healthful environment. This proposal is based on the premise that these rights are fundamental…and should be reflected in the state’s Constitution.” Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. of Sag Harbor, a Suffolk official, too, who has long strongly championed environmental causes, is a leading sponsor of the Green Amendment. He says: “It is a great thing.” By providing “a Constitutional right to clean air and clean water and a healthful environment, it elevates environmental policy and initiatives.” In the State Senate the prime sponsor is Robert Jackson of Washington Heights in Manhattan. He comments that “to add 15
words to the Constitution of our state, we are helping shape the future of New York…. If the voters approve it in November, this language will finally put in place safeguards to require the government to consider the environment and our relationship to the Earth in decision making. If the government fails in that responsibility, New Yorkers will finally have the right to take legal action for a clean environment because it will be in the State Constitution.” That prospect has led to opposition by The Business Council of New York State. In a memorandum to the legislature, it says it “fails to see the benefit in providing a direct right of action under the State Constitution to remedy an environmental condition because there are numerous adequate remedies available under current state law.” Challenging this is Delaware Riverkeeper Maya K. van Rossum, key in the initiative for a Green Amendment in New York State and states through the U.S., and in the U.S. Constitution, too. She is the author of a significant, indeed superb 2017 book, “The Green Amendment, Securing Our Right to a Healthy Environment.” “Passage of a Green Amendment in New York would be as beneficial for the businesses of New York as it would be for the people,” says Pennsylvania-based von Rossum. “A Green Amendment does not
pit people and the environment against business; it joins them together in a common cause that benefits everyone.” An attorney, she says that “current…environmental protection laws are not truly recognizing and protecting the rights of people to a healthy environment. This is as much the case in New York as in other states across the nation.” “A Constitutional right,” she says, “would provide appropriate access to the courts in those situations when our governmental decisionmakers are not honoring the inalienable right of all people to a healthy environment, including when our current… environmental laws are allowing damaging levels of pollution and degradation to pass unchallenged.” A Green Amendment, she says, would give people a right comparable to Constitutional rights such as freedom of speech, religion, assembly and the press receive. Getting an amendment to the New York Constitution adopted isn’t easy. Passage in two sessions of the State Assembly and State Senate and then approval by the voters is necessary. Leaders of 70 organizations in New York have announced their support for the Green Amendment. They represent groups including the League of Women Voters; Save the Sound; New York Public Interest

BY TOM BARTON It’s Daniel Jones time for the Giants. That statement, while true, emits feelings that can go from excitement to dread for most fans of the Big Blue. But, let’s make one thing perfectly clear, it’s a true statement. Daniel Jones is the man for the G-Men and his success or lack thereof will determine the future of this football team. Jones isn’t a spotlight guy, even in a huge media market like New York, but the heat of the spotlight is certainly on him for any Giants fan who is paying attention. The NFC East is widely considered the weakest division in football, and there is no clear cut favorite to run away with the division crown. The Cowboys lead the way with +130 odds, Washington comes in at just under 2:1 odds, the Eagles and Giants both sit around 5 to 1 to walk away the winners.

Saquon Barkley is the big name on offense of course, but the Giants added Kenny Golladay to join Sterling Shepard, Darius Slayton and Evan Engram forming a very good group of pass catchers for Jones. Daniel Jones may have been drafted too high, and he might have had some questions if he could be that franchise QB, but no matter what Giants fans believed then he is the only hope you have right now. If New York wants to steal this division it certainly has the talent to do so, but Jones has to become what Dave Gettleman believes he is. Big Blue has surrounded Jones
Giants fans, this is it. It’s make or break for Jones and the G-Men. With time to throw, weapons to play with, and a coaching staff who believes in Daniel Jones around him, he has to fly this year. If he does, an NFC East title is within reach. If he fails there is a very good chance that it’s back to the drawing board to try and find the next Big Blue franchise QB.

With all due apologies to Andy Williams and his seminal holiday classic of the same name, the most wonderful time of the year is here right now. That late August, early September period of time when the two most popular fantasy sports have a whirlwind of activity going on right now. The baseball championship races are in full gear, and the hard work spent laying a foundation for success from March thru July, is ready to be capped off with a furious sprint through September. And of course, with NFL pre-season camps opened up and pre-season games being played, the world of fantasy football Is gearing up for its drafts to happen from about the 3rd week of August through Labor Day Weekend. It is certainly true that fantasy baseball championships in season long formats are started at the draft, backed up by a solid season of smart waiver pickups and intelligent strategies to maximize stats. And in dynasty formats, the talent base you laid down from previous seasons as evidenced by your returning dynasty players is your starting point. But those moves you make in late August and September can either leave you as a champion or an also-ran. Championships last forever, but 2nd place finishes sting forever.

Those odds represent a Cowboys team with a healthy Dak Prescott. Dak has been shut down in camp because of arm concerns. Those odds also are factoring in a starting Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB for Washington, which now apparently there are questions if he is their true #1 QB. So to say this division is “anyone’s to win” is pretty accurate. For the Giants what they need is their QB1 to step up and be who he was drafted to be.

As fantasy football players are rapidly doing their research to prep for their upcoming football drafts, this can be the most time pressured point on the calendar. To be sure, I love it, but how you spend your time in baseball can no doubt impact your preparation for football. A few pointers to more efficiently spend your time. • When you wake up each morning, an obvious view through the previous night’s box scores is natural for everyone. Review the categories you need to gain extra points, and calculate the distance to that next point. If you are 13 saves away from the next point in the saves category, and the next point after that is 19 saves away, it is going to take some heavy lifting to get those two points. But if you are 1 Quality Start away from your next competitor, and above him 2 teams are tied at only 2 Quality Starts ahead of you, I would rather go chase after the Quality Starts. It is typical in leagues from ESPN to CBS Sports to use 8 pitchers each week in your active lineup. I have yet to see a league that restricts how those 8 pitchers are assigned. In other words, I can use 8 starting pitchers without using a single relief pitcher if I so desire. In the scenario I just described, perhaps using 7 starting pitchers and only 1

Hurricanes May (or May Not) Miss Us – and They Leave Deadly Rip Tides

We write often about hurricanes, great and small. Of note, formerly, an average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. As you can see from the table, this year’s NOAA prediction will use new numbers for an “average” season: 14 named storms, up from 12, and seven hurricanes, up from 6, including three major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5). Henri was briefly a Cat-1. This column is about rip tides, rip currents and undertows – which are what distant storms often leave us. Lest one of us comes to grief…
Undertow v Rip Tide v Rip Currents
Anybody that has ever been to a beach understands undertow. It is the backwash as gravity returns a breaking wave to the sea. All but small children can stand against it – and its effect ends at the leading edge of the next breaking wave. While it might knock you down and thus “suck” you under, it won’t pull you out to sea. Our mothers didn’t know that because they confused undertow

with rip tides and rip currents. A rip tide is the result of tides and the egress and ingress of large volumes of water flowing through inlets, estuaries, and bays. As facts would have it, most people don’t swim near inlets or where bays meet the sea. They swim near beaches, where sand bars often form, and where rip currents, “the killer current”, form in concert.
The Anatomy of a Rip Current
Rip currents are by far the biggest killers of ocean swimmers. Rip currents form as waves disperse along the beach causing water to become trapped between the beach and a sandbar or other underwater feature. This water becomes the “feeder” that creates the deadly force of the rip current. The water converges into a narrow, riverlike channel moving away from the shore at high speed. (see exhibit 1) Marine scientists define a rip current as having a “neck” (the river-like channel moving away from the shore) and a “head” that is often defined by an unusual disturbance or choppiness in
the water and by murky discoloration caused by sand and debris. As the water, and swimmer, reaches the “head”, the velocity and strength of the rip current circulation begins to weaken considerably.

If you don’t panic, and play the water’s power to your advantage, yes. Don’t try to swim back to shore against the rip current that is dragging you out. Most likely, you will tire beyond recovery and drowning, flatly put, will follow as surely as night follows day. Swim with and across the rip current. Let it give you some speed – as you “exit – stage left!” Or right – but get

Forgiveness Therapy

Life is a wonderful gift to be treasured and shared. But anger and resentment, fed by a refusal to forgive, block healing and growth. The gift becomes damaged and a lot of us lose it. Unfortunately, when we need healing the most, forgiveness may seem neither a lovely idea nor an empowering one. The following axioms are from a collection I have inventoried over the years and hope you will use and practice some of them. • Forgiveness means bending without breaking, being strong enough to withstand the heavy weight of injury but resilient enough to recover. Be forgiving! • Life is never perfect and often unfair. Forgive life’s inevitable failures. • Forgive yourself: for what you regret doing and for what you wish you had done, for not being fully yourself and for being only yourself. • Self-forgiveness cleanses the soul,
• Victims are helpless, at the mercy of the offender. By showing mercy to an offender, you put yourself back in control. Take charge by forgiving.
washing away shame and guilt. Out of self-forgiveness comes the power to extend forgiveness to others. • You have the right to feel sad, betrayed, angry, resentful when you’ve been injured. Understand, accept, and express your feelings. Pushing them below the surface only means they will erupt in another place, at another time.

It helps you find your way through the wilderness of misunderstanding, hurt, resentment and hatred. • When you are having a difficult time forgiving, recall a moment when you wanted to be forgiven. Offer the other person what you wanted to receive.
• Confront those who have hurt you; tell them how you feel. When that’s impossible or when that could harm you or someone else, speak to them in your imagination.
• Forgiveness is a lifelong process. Forgive over and over – even for the same offense.
• Forgiveness does not mean accepting further abuse or continuing destructive relationships. Establish boundaries for what is acceptable to you and make those boundaries clear to others. Hold them accountable for their actions. • Justice may right the wrongs, but forgiveness heals the hurt. Seek forgiveness beyond justice. • To refuse to forgive is to continue to
