Zeldin Camp Bolsters Security in Wake of Attack

Republican and Conservative gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin's (R-NY1) campaign has ramped up the Congressman's security detail following an attack during a campaign rally at the VFW Post 8495 in Monroe County last Thursday. According to a statement by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, at approximately 8 p.m., Zeldin was on stage delivering a campaign speech. "A male from the crowd (the suspect who has since been identified as David G. Jakubonis, 43, of Fairport), climbed onto the makeshift staged flatbed truck and approached Zeldin. The (alleged) attacker held a weapon in his hand,
swung it towards Zeldin's neck, and told the Congressman 'You're done.' Members of the Zeldin campaign and audience restrained the man until Deputies arrived at the scene and took him into custody." The Sheriff’s Department reported there were no injuries. Jakubonis was charged by local law enforcement with a nonviolent felony, attempted assault in the 2nd degree, was arraigned in Perinton Town Court, and immediately freed without bail. Bail might have been imposed had prosecutors charged Jakubonis with either second degree criminal possession of a weapon, or first degree attempted assault. But Jakubonis was back in custody on Saturday, charged in
federal court and now facing up to 10 years in prison on federal charges of assaulting a member of Congress using a dangerous weapon, the U.S. Department of Justice announced. Jakubonis will remain in custody pending a detention hearing July 27. Following the assault, Zeldin said "Political scores should be settled at the ballot box- not on stage at campaign events trying to violently attack candidates you disagree with. This is not ok. This is the United States of America." New York GOP Chairman Nick Langworthy has since denounced current bail laws and blasted Governor Kathy Hochul's bail reform laws "that allowed Zeldin's attacker to go free." Governor Kathy Hochul released in a prepared statement following Jakubonis' first arrest, saying that she was "Relieved to hear that Congressman Zeldin was not injured and that the suspect is in custody. I condemn this violent behavior in the strongest terms possible - it has no place in New York." Zeldin did proceed to finish his campaign speech along with moving forward with his packed campaign itinerary over the weekend with former primary opponents Andrew Giuliani, Rob Astorino, and Marc Molinario joining Zeldin on the campaign
trail. Following Zeldin's declaration of victory on Primary Night, Giuliani, Astorino and Molinario said they would throw their support squarely behind Zeldin and his running mate, Alison Esposito for Deputy Governor. Meanwhile, Zeldin thanked all who reached out to him in the wake of his attack. "Someone tried to stab me onstage during a rally, but fortunately, I was able to grab his wrist and stop him for a few minutes until others tackled him. I'm ok," Zeldin continued "and Alison Esposito and all others in the audience are ok," Zeldin said. Zeldin went on to say he's "Grateful for the attendees who stepped up quietly to assist, and the law enforcement officers who quickly responded.”
The attack on Zeldin has prompted an even louder call for bail reform and a balance of power in New York's Governmental structure dominated by Democrats in all three houses - the House, the Assembly and Governor's office. "I'm as resolute as ever to do my part to make New York safe again." Following his assailant's second arrest, Zeldin added, "I’m thankful that federal authorities came in to do what New York State's broken pro-criminal justice system could not-uphold the rule of law. The State must start prioritizing the safety of law abiding New Yorkers over criminals. Cashless bail," Zeldin continued "must be repealed and judges should have the discretion to set cash bail on far more offenses."

Speaker Carl Heastie announced that he has appointed Assemblymembers Fred W. Thiele, Jr., Stacey Pheffer Amato and Judy Griffin to serve on the legislative commission on the Future of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). Assemblymember Theile will be serving as co-chair of the commission. This legislative commission will investigate and report to the Legislature on the establishment of a public power model for the operation of LIPA, including specific actions, legislation and the timeline necessary to restructure LIPA into a true publicly owned power authority. “LIPA has repeatedly failed its customers when they needed them most and the people of Long Island deserve better,” said Speaker Heastie. “I have the utmost confidence in Assemblymembers Thiele, Pheffer Amato and Griffin to fight to deliver LIPA customers transparency, oversight and accountability.” “The establishment of this new commission is a huge and necessary step towards making LIPA the transparent and accountable public utility that the ratepayers in the LIPA service area have long deserved,” said Assemblymember Thiele. “The third party management model that LIPA has used for decades has failed

members, to actively assist and advise the commission in its duties. The commission is also required to hold at least one public hearing in each of the counties comprising the service area of LIPA by September 30, 2022. No later than December 31, 2022, the commission is required to issue a draft report to the Legislature regarding the establishment of a public power model for the operation of LIPA, followed by another round of public hearings. A final report is due no later than April 1, 2023.

William Floyd Varsity Football Coach Inducted into Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame
Paul Longo, William Floyd High School’s legendary football coach, was recently inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2022 for his tremendous accomplishments over the course of his 27 years coaching the Colonials. He joins a renowned class of honorees across all facets of the sports world who have made great contributions to their fields and their home county proud in the process. The induction is just one of many incredible accolades in Coach Longo’s illustrious career, which includes 13 Suffolk County championships, five Long Island titles and taking up the mantle of the winningest coach in Suffolk County public school history. Coach Longo, who was inducted into the William Floyd Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019, currently has 214 career wins and counting. “On behalf of the William Floyd School District, I would like to congratulate Coach
Longo on this tremendous accomplishment. His knowledge of the game and commitment to hard work and dedication is evident by the on-the-field performance of his teams each and every year,” said Kevin M. In 27 seasons, through 2022, he is 214-61 and has made the playoffs in 22 seasons. His teams have won five Long Island titles and 13 Suffolk County championships. The Colonials have won three Rutgers Trophies as the top team in Suffolk. His 42-game win streak from 2005-2008 is a Long Island record. Eighteen of his teams have ranked in the top 10 on Long Island; and, 10 of those teams ranked in the top 10 in New York State. As a [former] coach for Sachem hockey, his team won multiple Suffolk County championships.

Loguercio Attends “Axis Church in the Park” Service at Medford Memorial Park On July 17, Councilman Michael Loguercio attended the “Axis Church in the Park” service at Medford Memorial Park. During the event, the Councilman honored Neil Marturiello for his 27 years of continued service as the Post Commander of the Medford VFW Post 2397 as well as his work for other organizations. This past April, Mr. Marturiello was honored by the Medford Fire Department for 50 years of service. He has been an officer or played an intricate part of the Medford Chamber of Commerce since its inception 27 years ago and as a member of the American Legion for 35 years, he served as its Commander for ten years. He is a member of the Medford Civic Association and in November 2021, he celebrated 50 years of marriage to his wife Ann. He is a Vietnam veteran who served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1970. William Floyd Alumnus Selected for Elite Blue Angels Maintenance Support Team
Cody Farrell, a 2014 William Floyd alumnus, has gone from the halls of his alma mater and serving his school community as a member of the award-winning NJROTC program to serving as an Aviation Structural Mechanic Petty Officer Second Class (AM2) with the U.S. Navy’s elite Blue Angels, a flight demonstration squadron that showcases the teamwork and professionalism of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Cody will serve as a member of the Blue Angels Maintenance and Support Team. Petty Officer Second Class Farrell’s specific duties as a U.S. Navy AM2 include maintaining and repairing all flight control surfaces, as well as removing, replacing and testing all hydraulic components, landing gear and related systems onboard F/A-18 aircrafts. His responsibilities also include
inspecting and troubleshooting different aircraft systems that operate off of mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic operations. At William Floyd, Cody was a four-year member of the NJROTC program, achieving the rank of ensign during his senior year and selected by his instructors and peers as a platoon leader. During June of his senior year, just prior to his high school graduation, Cody traveled to the New York Military Entrance Processing Station in Brooklyn, NY, with his recruiter, and officially enlisted in the U.S. Navy. According to Cody, his experience with the William Floyd NJROTC aided in this endeavor, as in addition to all that he learned as a naval cadet, his four years with the NJROTC allowed him to enter the Navy with the rank of E-3 rather than an E-1. has brought him to various places around the world – first, just after basic training when he reported to Strike Fighter Squadron 2013 in Virginia Beach, VA, and then deployment aboard the USS George H.W. Bush in 2017 in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. During that mission, he served as a Maintainer, Plane Captain and Catapult Final Checker. During his time at sea, Cody’s ship made port in Greece, Bahrain, Dubai, Israel and England, including passing the Rock of Gibraltar and traveling through the Suez Canal. Currently, he is stationed with Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 in Patuxent River, MD, and serves as a Government Quality Assurance Representative to aid in the research, testing and performance evaluation of newlydeveloped aircraft systems. He has the privilege of serving alongside another William Floyd alumnus, Corey Papile, Class of 2013.

According to the Blue Angels, selected enlisted personnel agree to a three-year tour with the squadron. Though every team member brings skills in a distinct job specialty, each is expected to work beyond that specialty, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the Blue Angels. The squadron consists of seven distinct departments, jointly responsible for guaranteeing command readiness. A tribute to this dedicated team is the fact that the Blue Angels have never canceled an air show due to a maintenance problem. Cody’s parents, Brian and Cathy Farrell, who notified the district of Cody’s accomplishments, said, “As parents, we are beyond proud. We knew the challenges Cody was going to face when he headed off to boot camp, and eventually on deployment into an active war zone. You raise your kids, always protecting them from danger and harm. When Cody left, we knew he was going to be on his own without our protection. Cody rose above many obstacles and succeeded in becoming the man he is today, and the hero he is to us.”
Now, Cody’s military service has brought him to the elite Blue Angels, where he was recommended for Blue Angel duty by his current commanding officer as one cannot apply and must be recommended. All who are recommended must complete an extensive screening

On July 21st, 2022 Suffolk County Legislator Anker attended a Middle Island Civic Association meeting to present a proclamation to recent Longwood High School graduate Tyler Massian in recognition of his exemplary service to the community. Most recently, Tyler Massian directed and edited a video featuring the Middle Island Civic Association, in which he encourages community residents to get actively involved in their local Civic Association. “It is my honor to recognize Tyler and thank him for the positive impact that he has had on the Longwood School District, the Middle Island Civic
Legislator Anker Recognizes Longwood High School Graduate Tyler Massian Association and his community as a whole,” said Legislator Anker. “Tyler’s passion for his community is inspiring.” “Tyler Massian went above and beyond our expectations with this civic awareness video,” said Middle Island Civic Association President Gail Bailey. “We civic officers thought he was just filming us, but he added so many extra touches with local photos, funny graphics and great narration. Tyler really captured the essence of Longwood's communities and we're very grateful.” During his time as a Longwood student, Tyler represented his peers and
community as a member of the Longwood Technology, Safety, and Legislative Committees, the High School Shared Decision Making Committee, and as a member of the Student Government and Student Council. In addition, he was instrumental in planning and facilitating community engagement events including, the Character Breakfast, Safe Halloween, Olympic Night, blood drives, the Challenge, the annual Academic Bowl, Junior High School Socials, the Spring Fling, and the Victory Games. Heat and Air Quality Advisories
With heat and air quality advisories in effect, Legislator Leslie Kennedy gathered with her colleagues, firefighters and a member of the medical community to urge residents to stay safe and stay hydrated. Current Bail Laws Must Be Rescinded and Rewritten

The air quality warning was prompted by high levels of ground ozone in the atmosphere. Ozone is a constituent part of smog and forms when the sun radiates on exhaust from cars and other pollutions. It is more likely to occur during the summer months. There
are many short-term and long-term health conditions that can be caused by or exacerbated by exposure to smog. Short-term exposure can lead to ear, nose, throat and eye irritation as well as problems breathing. Those with preexisting pulmonary and cardiovascular conditions should be particularly aware of the risks; however, youth and health do not preclude complications due to smog. With such concern around the heat advisory and air quality concerns, Legislator Leslie Kennedy reminded constituents that the solution was easy: “all we have to do is hydrate and care for ourselves.”
In what will likely be one of the top hot button issues emerging as the campaign trail approaches the finish line over the next three months, bail reform could well be first and foremost on the minds of voters when they head to the polls in November.

Since laws pertaining to bail for people who were arrested were changed in 2019 when the Democrats took one party control of New York State's Senate, Assembly and the Governor's office, bail reform has become one of the most divisive issues both in Albany and across the Empire State. The laws were changed in 2019 so fewer people arrested could be detained in custody because of their inability to afford bail. New York State adopted a law ending the assessment of cash bail in most cases involving misdemeanors and non violent felonies. When making decisions whether to release a person or set bail, the law requires judges to focus solely on conditions that will ensure the person returns to court. Only in the State of New York can judges not consider their subjective view of a person's "dangerousness" when deciding what release conditions to set.
After an assailant attempted an attack on Congressman Lee Zeldin, (the Republican and Conservative gubernatorial nominee) while he was campaigning last Thursday Upstate, public outcry for bail reform has become even louder. The alleged assailant was immediately released, but was rearrested by federal law enforcement and is being held in custody pending a hearing later this week.
Numerous law enforcement and political leaders, and the public, have been opposed to the rewritten laws pertaining to bail as they are now. While there repprtedly isn't enough evidence to say definitively that any given bail
It's time to RESCIND, RECALLand REWRITE bail laws. A judges authority to set bail should not be restricted to cases involving violent felonies. Laws must be rewritten so that a wider net is cast, granting judges free reign to do their jobs, and not be harnessed by the great political divide. It's up to our elected officials in the State Capitol to execute the changes that are so vital to protect and keep safe those law abiding citizens, and not leave the public vulnerable to repeat offenders. Bail laws must be rewritten. Will it take a shift from the current one party rule to achieve this change? Yes. And voters will make their voices heard at the polls in November.

Swimming With Sharks
BY KARL GROSSMAN “People swim with sharks all the time, they just don’t know it,” Hans Walters, a shark expert at the New York Aquarium, told WCBS 880 news amid the recent series of sharks biting people in this area. I saw this quite clearly—and surprisingly—a number of years ago from our sailboat heading from Long Island to the Elizabeth Islands off Massachusetts. We were sailing along the coast of Rhode Island and, passing a busy beach, I steered closer to shore to see what a Rhode Island beach might be like. Holding the tiller with my left hand, I looked out at the folks frolicking in the water— and between me and them, 10 feet from our boat, the fin of a shark appeared. I doubt any of those swimmers knew a shark was off shore. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says of the shark situation here, “there may be a new reality that we’re in.” It’s a scary “new reality” for those who like to swim in the ocean.

A website named “Xplore Our Planet” which describes itself “as a resource for wildlife enthusiasts and those who love to explore the world” declares: “Swimming with sharks sounds dangerous, but it isn’t—relatively speaking anyway. All things in life carry risk, but swimming with sharks is very low on the list. Only five people [worldwide] are killed each year—that’s 100 times less than by elephants—and these attacks are often either accidental as a case of mistaken identity or provoked by humans.” OK, but to be considered, too, are injuries, such as in Florida this month requiring the amputation of part of a young woman’s leg. “It is safe to swim with sharks if you do it properly,” says the website. But “how do you swim with sharks safely?” First, it advises “Be Careful Around the Big Three.” It says: “Almost every serious or fatal incident is caused by a collection of just three animals: great white sharks, bull sharks, and tiger sharks.” OK, but how can an average person identify those among the more than 500 shark species said to be in the seas of the world?

Then, it says, “A floundering fish or a panicking seal tells them it’s meal time, and they’ll charge in for an easy kill. If you get into difficulties and start flapping about, or jump in and out of the water with too much enthusiasm, you’ll mimic the sensations of injured prey and invite the opportunity for confusion and an accidental attack.” But not “flapping about” or being enthusiastic in the water, is that always possible?

And then there’s “Dive in Groups.” The website says: “A lone target, by nature, is less of a threat and more vulnerable. By swimming in groups, you present what you might call a united front against aggression.” OK, but not so easy if there is scant attendance on a beach.
Newsday just ran an editorial titled, “Now our woes include sharks.” It began noting that to “the pressurized fire hose of catastrophic problems shot into our lives daily, let us add sharks.” But, it stressed, “There are an average of five shark deaths annually worldwide, and about 236,000 drowning deaths. And the sharkcentric resources being thrown at Long Island beaches—including drones and patrols—can only serve the big question in the affirmative: Yes, there absolutely are sharks out there. But in many ways shark attacks are the danger best fixated on, because sharks likely won’t get us.” OK people, stop fixating. I learned to swim mostly in the Long Island Sound, off Wading River. Shark-wise, it’s not the Atlantic. But still, a 10-foot great white shark was spotted in the Sound off Connecticut in 2019. It was tagged in 2018 so later in 2019, CNN reported, “was detected...in the New York Bight, south of Long Island.”

How the 2nd Half Stacks Up

The Yankees and Mets are both in a position where they are looking at the second half of the season and hoping they just continue what they accomplished in the first half. At times though, that can be easier said than done. Both teams have plenty of hopes for the World Series and a deep playoff run at the least, and the sports books agree. The Mets are listed as the second favorites in the National League, and the fourth lowest odds overall at 7 to 1. The Yankees, no surprise, are leading all of baseball's odds at 3 to 1. Looking at the strengths of schedules in the second half should give us some insight as to if they can keep their success going. The Yankees have the 10th toughest schedule from the All Star break on. That shouldn't worry them. Not only are the Bombers the best team in baseball, but the teams that are chasing them in the standings
don't have it much easier. The Red Sox have the 2nd hardest in the majors, the Rays have the 4th, the upstart Orioles have the 5th and Jays come in at 9th. So, the first place Yankees have the "easiest" schedule of all of the Al East teams. The Mets should be even happier than their cross city counterparts. The Amazin's have the 8th easiest schedule going forward. In contrast the Marlins and Braves have the 12th and 13th toughest, while the Nationals aren't a threat but have the 6th hardest. The Phillies represent a potential issue though with the 3rd easiest schedule, which includes 7 head to head games left. Overall New York fans should be very excited about the second half for both teams. Enjoy the summer while you can because before long it will be the pressure of the postseason.

Predicting trade deadline activity is a treacherous game for some. But you better respect it and if you are playing in a NLonly or AL-only league you better pay attention this year because the single greatest 23 year old superstar in my lifetime turned down a huge offer from the team that developed him. Many baseball executives don’t doubt for a second that the Washington Nationals will trade Juan Soto in the next 2 weeks with the trade deadline looming large. This is a splendid example of real life baseball intersecting with fantasy baseball and offers a chance for thrills and shocking outcomes. No doubt about it, if you play in a mixed league this has no bearing on your plans, and better still if you have Soto in a mixed dynasty league. But if you have Soto in an NL-only format you are walking a tightrope right now and I will explain why. Soto resides in the National League East and some possible trade suitors reside in the American League East. Soto is a natural possibility for the Yankees to come up as a possible option.

But the Baltimore Orioles make the most sense. Soto turned down Washington’s offer to sign for 15 years and $440 million dollars. Soto seems intent on testing the market or at least letting the Nationals think that is his plan. But if Soto is traded from the National League to an American League team the implications are enormous for whoever has him in an NL-only format. Whatever players come back to the Nationals from the American League would go to the former owner of Soto in that format, but we all know such trades are usually high on prospects and thin on current players. So this has the chance to be devastating if you own Soto in an NL-only format. There are 7 teams that have reportedly contacted Washington to express an interest in trading for Soto. The Seattle Mariners, San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, St, Louis Cardinals and the Yankees and the Mets. Some owners in the NL-only format may breathe a sigh of relief looking at that list since it has 5 National League teams listed. I wouldn’t rejoice
Juan Soto Makes a Lot of Sense to the Orioles with the bat, the agreement is widespread throughout baseball that this kid has got “it” when it comes to intangibles and presence. That said, Adley is a quiet kid and will not be confused as a rah rah leader. Soto is the perfect complement alongside Rutschman who relishes the spotlight.

because I see the Baltimore Orioles as the most likely suitor. The current face of the Orioles would seem to be rookie Adley Rutschman. The Orioles being a surprise in the American League East this year is no surprise at all to the scouts who know Rutschman. He is a take charge catcher who exudes a ton of confidence from behind the plate. And while he has gotten off to a slow start
It was big news this winter that Baltimore made modifications to the fence in left field, both in terms of height as well as distance. Such modifications were not made to the wall in right field. It makes you wonder if Baltimore was considering Soto’s presence as a left handed hitter as far back as the winter. And a particular rumor swirling around the Internet has the Orioles giving up prized SS prospect Gunnar Henderson, RHP prospect Grayson Rodriguez, OF Colton Cowser and 3B-Coby Mayo. There is no other team in major league baseball that has 4 such superlative talents at the upper minor league levels ready or close to ready to step in at the major league level and not playing in the majors right now. Henderson
is quietly having one of the finest minor league seasons anywhere and is in the discussion for Minor League Player of the Year. Grayson Rodriguez is routinely discussed as perhaps the ultimate arm in the minor leagues today. Cowser was a 2021 first round draft pick. And Coby Mayo is ranked as the #5 prospect in the Orioles organization who was recently promoted to Double AA and had good power at High Class A. If I were the Nationals I would seek to remove Mayo from the package and insert flamethrower lefty D.L. Hall but that is still one hell of a haul. Consider that through age 22 the folks at Baseball-Reference see the most similar players to Soto at this young age as Mike Trout, Frank Robinson, Ken Griffey Jr. and Mickey Mantle. WOW! That is an elite list and he is worth every cent. And yes, after the Home Run hitting contest, pairing him up with Julio Rodriguez is a dream pairing, but the Orioles have the depth to do this and become a favorite in the American League East. Happy hunting!

We have written often about hurricanes, great and small. Of note, formerly, an average season produces 12 named storms of which six become hurricanes, including three major hurricanes. As you can see from the table, this year’s NOAA prediction will use new numbers for an “average” season: 14-21 named storms, up from 12, and 6-12 hurricanes, up from 6, including 3-6 major hurricanes (Category 3, 4 or 5). Sandy wasn’t even a Cat-1, technically.

Hurricanes May (or May Not) Miss Us – and They Leave Deadly Rip Tides
Anybody that has ever been to a beach understands undertow. It is the backwash as gravity returns a breaking wave to the sea. All but small children can stand against it – and its effect ends at the leading edge of the next breaking wave. While it might knock you down and thus “suck” you under, it won’t pull you out to sea. Our mothers didn’t know that because they confused undertow with rip tides and rip currents. A rip tide is the result of tides and the egress and ingress of large volumes of water flowing through inlets, estuaries, and bays. As facts would have it, most people don’t swim near inlets or where bays meet the sea. They swim near beaches, where sand bars often form, and where rip currents, “the killer current”, form in concert.

Rip currents are by far the biggest killers of ocean swimmers. Rip currents form as waves disperse along the beach causing water to become trapped between the beach and a sandbar or other underwater feature. This water becomes the “feeder” that creates the deadly force of the rip current. The water converges into a narrow, river-like

channel moving away from the shore at high speed. (see exhibit 1) Marine scientists define a rip current as having a “neck” (the river-like channel moving away from the shore) and a “head” that is often defined by an unusual disturbance or choppiness in the water and by murky discoloration caused by sand and debris. As the water, and swimmer, reaches the “head”, the velocity and strength of the rip current circulation begins to weaken considerably.
Can I See a Rip Current?
Often, yes. As a result of the current’s speed, sand is forced into suspension often causing a rip current to be associated with “dirty” water. It is characterized by a strong, localized current flowing seaward from the shore; visible as an agitated band of water, which is the return movement of water piled up on the shore by incoming waves.
Most Importantly, Can I Get Out of the Grip of a Rip Current?
If you don’t panic, and play the water’s power to your advantage, yes. Don’t try to swim back to shore against the rip current that is dragging you out. Most likely, you will tire beyond recovery and
drowning, flatly put, will follow as surely as night follows day. Swim with and across the rip current. Let it give you some speed – as you “exit – stage left!” Or right – but get out of the grip of the current and into “normal” water. Then, deal with the hand you’ve been dealt – swim back, or just tread water while waving your arms for help, or just float and rest. Surrogate's Court
Q: What is Surrogate’s Court in New York? A:
Su r rogate’s Court hears cases involving the affairs of decedents, the probate of wills, and the administration of estates. The Surrogate’s Court also handles certain types of guardianship petitions and adoptions. Every county in the State of New York has a Surrogate’s Court. When a person dies with a Will (testate), the nominated executor must file a probate petition with the Surrogate’s Court in order to be officially appointed by the Court and to be able to distribute the property left by the decedent. First, the executor will file the original Will and a certified copy of the death certificate along with the probate petition in Surrogate’s Court. Then, notice needs to be given to the decedent’s next-ofkin who will either sign waivers
and consents or be issued a citation to appear in court to have the opportunity to object to the Will. After jurisdiction is complete and issues with the Will, if any, are addressed, the Surrogate’s Court will issue a decree granting probate and Letters Testamentary will be issued to the executor. Letters Testamentary is the document that gives the executor the authority to administer the decedent’s estate, allowing him or her to marshal the decedent’s assets, pay any debts of the decedent, and distribute the property in the estate according to the terms of the Will. When a person dies without a Will (intestate), it is necessary to file an administration petition with the Surrogate’s Court. Here, a close relative of the decedent applies to become the decedent’s administrator

who, like an executor, will collect the estate assets, pay off any debts, and distribute the property according to New York’s law, once appointed. As with a probate proceeding, all interested parties must be given notice and must either sign a waiver and or be served with a citation issued by the court.
Where a person passes away with $50,000 or less in personal property and didn’t own any real property solely in his/her name, a small estate proceeding (also known as a voluntary administration proceeding) is available. A small estate proceeding is a less complex proceeding because consent
does not have to be given by the decedent’s next-of-kin. Either the nominated executor or closest living relative will file an Affidavit of Voluntary Administration with the Surrogate’s Court to permit them to marshal the assets, pay off any debts, and distribute the property of the estate. Navigating Surrogate’s Court can be tricky, so it is always a good idea to consult with an experienced Trust and Estate’s attorney to determine the best way to proceed. How the Clergy Can Help Veterans
VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Clergy play an important role in supporting conversation or Service members well being and spiritual help for Veterans. They are there to provide help for those in need, Veterans returning to civilian life and those now living with emotions of guilt and shame. Guilt and Shame are not the same emotion, though often intertwined. Shame is an internal, self-conscious emotion, whereas guilt is reflecting on a past action or behavior, and preserving it as a negative reaction. Simply stated: Shame =negative self-judgement and viewing yourself as worthless. Guilt evaluates an action or behavior you did as unfavorable, though as a person, you still feel valued. Unfortunately the shame grows stronger the longer one suffers from it. One suffering from shame may sink into deep depression turning away from religious beliefs and feelings
of no longer belonging here on earth. Some will attempt self medication such as alcohol or drugs which increases the depression. Another issue with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Moral Injury (MI), is the fears of ending up with the lifelong label of a “Mental Disorder." While the local hospital or doctor will report the diagnosis to the state or the VA hospital, the clergy do not make such a report. There is no medicine for the treatment of shame of moral injury. Both are best treated by relieving the tension by telling it to someone you trust. The clergy under oath to God cannot tell anyone about your problem. They listen to your problem, and help you on the right path to a freedom from it. One should seek help from their own clergy, or the clergy at the VA hospital in
Northport. The Northport VA hospital has three chaplains (Catholic, Protestant and Jewish) available to help you. Your local clergy is the easiest to go to for help. When you go to a member
of the clergy for help it is like a confession and the clergy is bound not to reveal it. You can offer a short prayer, thanking God for hearing you and for His servant to helping you to a normal life.

OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE Perhaps the most interesting and important of all facts concerning the angels is their role as our loving guardians. We should all strive to have a full understanding of this doctrine and realize the presence of an individual angel by our side. The great theologian Thomas Aquinas tells us that the moment a child is born God calls upon one of His angels and entrusts the newborn into his special care. This does not occur when the soul is created and united with the body, which takes place before birth. At that time the child is one with its mother and protected by the mother’s Guardian Angel. It is when we are born into the world that our angel begins to care for us. All people have a Guardian Angel. Although one angel would be powerful enough to take perfect care of a multitude of souls, God in His
infinite goodness has given to each of us a special angel who is all our own and whose specific duty is to watch over us day and night, whether we are asleep or awake, alone or in the company of others, in or out of our homes, working or resting, in joy and in troubles, every moment of our lives. Our Guardian Angel never leaves us alone for a single moment and is always at our side and seeing our every movement. When angels take charge of us, they devote their superior intelligence, knowledge, power, and vigilance to protect and help us in every possible way. The angel does this because God gives the command to do so and angels most earnestly desire to fulfill the will of God. Also, the angel himself possesses an immense personal love for us. The angels long to share with us their joy, happiness, love, and holiness with such

Our Guardian Angels a generosity and earnestness of desire which we cannot possibly understand or appreciate. Our Guardian Angel prays for us unceasingly with intense fervor to God. Our Angel may not interfere with our free will but can and does act on our memories, recalling vividly something we ought to do or warning us of something we ought not do. It may seem incredible that God would give each of us a glorious member of the Heavenly Host to guide and guard us from birth until death. It may seem difficult to believe that each of us would have our own angel who devotes all of his time, care, and unceasing vigilance to secure our well-being. But in truth this is only one of the many proofs of the boundless love God has for us. God has done for us numerous personal favors. He created us by an act of His will,
making us in His own image and likeness. He raises us up to the highest possible destiny. We were all created to be with Him as His children forever in Heaven, enjoying infinite joys
and perfect happiness for all eternity. To this end He has given us all our own Guardian Angel to guide and protect us on our journey.
