South Country School Board President Assesses Programs/State of District

As the South Country School District prepares for the opening of the 2022-23 School Year, School Board President Cheryl Felice talked about the state of the district’s initiatives moving forward. An overview of Felice's tenure on the School Board shows she was first elected in 2016 and completed her first three year term on June 30, 2019. Felice took an hiatus for an opportunity to run for Brookhaven Town's 4th Council District. While she didn't win that election, she explained that she ran for the 4th Council District to help the School District in a greater capacity on issues relating to the landfill. Felice's love for School Board service prompted her to successfully seek election to another three year term in 2020, and is now in the third year of her second three-year term. On July 6, Felice was elected by her school board peers to serve another year as President of the Board. "What I enjoy most about working on the Board of Education first and foremost, is watching the students grow, and attending sports events, concerts and drama productions," Felice said. Another important element of her school board service, Felice pointed out, is "balancing a budget each year
that stays below the state mandated tax cap." She acknowledges the support of the residents who continue to demonstrate their support for the District's annual spending plans.

"Residents were also supportive," Felice added, "when they approved utilizing reserve money for capital improvements for Frank P. Long Intermediate School (grades 4 and 5)." Reserve money l was used with no tax increase to replace every door and window at Frank P. Long Intermediate School in 2018. Revenue utilized for capital projects are derived from the District's Capital Reserve Fund which requires voter approval. "We had the need for a better water filtration that pulls water away from the building to prevent mold and allergies, and we really appreciated the community's support," Felice said. Additionally, the courtyard at Frank P. Long has undergone a complete renovation that includes a turf field and state of the art improvements to maximize utilizing the area, complete with a learning lab! "The courtyard is now maintenance free and presents a cleaner and safer learning environment around the entire courtyard," Felice explained.
To that end, the District, after an intensive four month Superintendent search, has hired Mr. Antonio Santana. "We wanted someone who would support enhancing communications for all stakeholders," Felice said. "We also like that the demographics of the City of Glen Cove where he is coming to us from are similar to the demographics in South Country School District." Santana, who previously served as high school principal for the City of Glen Cove, officially begins his tenure as South Country's Superintendent of Schools on August 1.

Another popular program Felice says is of significant importance is the designation of the Brookhaven Elementary School as a Dual Language Magnet School. The concept of a dual language designated school affords parents the opportunity from all four corners of the District to have their child attend the school. "Parents
can choose to send their children to Brookhaven Elementary for a dual language experience which will follow the students to Bellport High School where they can choose Spanish or any second language we offer as an elective," Felice explained. Felice also talked about strengthening district communications. "The Board of Education has recognized the community's need for enhanced communications to parents,

"After two years of the pandemic," Felice said, "we're all focused on making up for lost time as we look ahead with anticipation and excitement of the new school year."
Friends of the Library Prepares to Launch

Local residents of the Tri~Hamlet area are preparing for the eventual launch of their Friends of the Library organization that will support the Mastics-MorichesShirley Community Library. Friends of the Library groups are formed, by and large, to support local libraries in their communities that may include, but are not limited to financial, political, and cultural aspects. Friends organizations are compromised of voluntary boards of directors, separate from the corresponding libraries they're formed to support. During recent interviews, Library Director, Kerri Rosalia, and one of Friends of the Library founding members, Ken Olivo, outlined plans as the group plans to familiarize the community about its mission and goals. Olivo said their Friends of
the Library's 501 C 3 tax exempt status will enable them to provide additional programming and initiatives which the Library would otherwise not be able to implement if outside of its authorized expenditures. "The idea is the Library, being a taxing institution, can't raise money for certain programs that are not included in the budget," Olivo explained, "yet, the Library may need programs or items that are not in the budget, and there's where we can assist, and we'll be working closely with our library director, the staff and their board." Rosalia couldn't be more excited, and emphasized that Friends groups are welcome entities to their local libraries. "Other libraries have Friends groups, and we're happy to know that our residents are interested in advocating for the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library," Rosalia said. "Friends groups do things like raise money for things that are not covered by the library's operational budget," Rosalia explained. "Advocacy," Rosalia noted, is the key to Friends of the Library's functions. "Advocacy is so important to their (Friends') mission and in their role of supporting the Library," Rosalia underscored, adding that employees of the Library are, in turn, "huge supporters" of Friends of the Library. "This is also an opportunity for more of our
residents to become more involved, and perhaps get more active on the committee," Rosalia said. For his part, Olivo is counting on his far-reaching ties throughout the community to help strengthen and grow the Tri-Hamlet's Friends of the Library charter. He began his involvement with the MasticsMoriches-Shirley Community Library back in 1975 when the library existed in portable structures sited in front of William Floyd High School. Olivo serves on the board of Colonial Youth and Family Services, founding member of the South Bay Civic
Association, Director-Ameritus of James V. Kavanaugh Knights of Columbus, Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce board member, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, chaired the community Christmas Parade for 36 years, and is a founding trustee in the Village of Mastic Beach. With the main library on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley under construction and slated for completion in December 2023, and two 7,000 square foot annexes, each located in Mastic Beach and Moriches (the latter slated to open soon), Olivo said the local Friends group is busy organizing for its
own formal launch. "Right now we're organizing, we're looking to grow our board with community members, we're recruiting membership, and creating flyers..." The immediate message is to "stay tuned" as Friends of the Library for the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library prepares to formally introduce its mission and goals to the community with the goal of advocating for Library programs, activities and initiatives. Dellecave Award Winners
Named in memory of the legendary educator, official, and coach Gaetano “Butch” Dellecave, the award is the product of a highly successful 22-year partnership between local school districts in Suffolk County and the award organizers: the Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, the Butch Dellecave Foundation, and Newsday.
Athletic Directors from all sixty-six Suffolk County school districts were asked to nominate one male and one female from their high school senior class. Nominees must be students who are not only at the top of their game, but also score high in classroom performance and in their commitment to local community service.

SAVE Holds 1st Annual Comedy Night Fundraiser

When feelings of depression or mental health issues are evident, SouthShore Counseling and Mediation Center is an outreach entity to contemplate. While one may feel better after speaking with a friend or loved one, for moderate or severe emotional distress, this relief may prove to be temporary. SouthShore Counseling Services is strategically nestled between the Hamlet of Brookhaven and the Village of Bellport. With a mantra that touts: 'Begin Your Path to a Brighter Future,' Michelle Cavaleri, LCSW-R, IA, the director who oversees daily operations, explains that a team of "trained professionals help alleviate emotional struggles in a safe, healthy environment." SouthShore Counseling Services' staff of licensed clinical psychotherapists and mental health counselors are experienced in working with patients ranging in ages from early childhood (3 years), to adolescents, to teens and adults, as well as family, couples and group counseling. "Our goal is to provide the most effective success for all individuals using a client-centered, cognitive, behavioral approach in concert with a wide range of treatment modalities," Cavaleri explains. This, she pointed out, is done by providing patients with a supportive environment for the exploration of feelings and selfawareness, affording the client opportunities to identify strengths and to build defenses when facing
challenges. Along the way, Cavaleri coupled SouthShore Counseling Services with SAVE, (Stand-up And Voice Empowerment), breathing life into a new not-for-profit organization she created that focuses on arming women with empowerment and self-worth. SAVE's mission places emphasis on fostering positive selfregard in all women by providing a gateway to education, job readiness, and self determination leading to personal growth and longterm independence. "As a female growing up in the 1960's and 1970's, I witnessed extreme changes in the universal values as they applied to women, while it became more prevalent to have single parent households, with women as sole providers," Cavalieri noted. "It was a struggle back then, and continues to be a struggle today," she said. Cavaleri noted that a woman raising a child, and working full-
time to maintain a well-respected position in the community, may occasionally need some outside support. "This is where my passion that all women are afforded opportunities to succeed, inspire SAVE," Cavelieri explained. So it was that in 2018, after collaborating as a therapist in the mental health field, Cavalieri joined forces "to move forward and bring a common goal" for women to be successful. Having received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude from New York Institute of Technology in Central Islip, and subsequently earning her Masters Degree in Social Work from SUNY Stony Brook, Cavaleri has over 20 years of experience in the field. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The word “resilience” is a word being used and acted upon in Suffolk—indeed all over the United States—these days to try to deal with results of climate change: for us here rising waters, especially. But unless the cause of the problem—primarily the burning of fossil fuels warming the atmosphere causing climate change—is fully challenged and dealt with, efforts at seeking to react to the effect, resilience, will not work in the long run or even the medium run. The recent 6-to-3 ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court in the West Virginia v. EPA case that will limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s power to regulate carbon emissions from power plants substantially weakens dealing with the main cause. And environmentalists here— and across the nation—have good reason to be highly disapproving. The EPA has been tackling carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act.

If you look at the standings at the All Star break both the Yankees and Mets are sitting in first place and the fans should be ecstatic. On the surface everything is rosy and the New York teams are headed for a pennant. You have to look past the surface though, and that is when the problems start to show their ugly heads. While so many trade rumors will surround the Yankees and Mets concerning a big bat, trading away players who have stumbled this season and of course, like every team, bullpen arms, the main concern for both teams is something we knew was coming since April. The Yankees and Mets both knew they would have rotation concerns back in Spring Training and nothing has changed. The Yankees have stable arms in their ace Gerritt Cole and Jordan Montgomery
should be safe for 180+ innings. The rest of the staff has no such assurances. Nestor Cortes has been a revelation. The newly dubbed All Star has been a 1A to Cole, but he has never pitched more than 93 innings. Jameson Taillon has had constant arm issues in his career and while he pitched 144 innings last year, the injuries are always a concern. Then there is Luis Severino who basically missed the past two seasons, and just landed on the IL last week. The Mets are presumably in a better position because they are getting Jacob deGrom back soon. His return comes with question marks of its own. Max Scherzer is coming back from his own injuries and is getting long in the tooth. They aren't the only two with worries though. Like the Yankees the Amazin's have innings limits concerns. Will Carlos Carrassco be able to handle a full workload after

Well last week we told you to race out and take Akil Baddoo because he had gone to the minors and worked on the things that would get him back to the Show. Well, sure enough he was called back up on Monday July 11th. This is why you read my column. I have got loads of similar calls to make for the 2nd half of the baseball season. Once we get past the All Star game lots of great things happen. The flurry of activity prior to the trading deadline. Teams that look likely to go to the playoffs beef up their pitching staffs and their benches. But especially, the players from the minor leagues step up with a chance to get themselves promoted and show what they can do on the largest stage. That year of development time lost has translated to two years lost for some prospects. Jones posted a .917 OPS at Triple AAA this year after struggling there in 2021 and losing time to injury. He hit a 457 foot home run in the second game after his call up that was a simple yet elegant swing. The power is legit, the feel for the strike zone is good. His position eligibility at 3B and OF is also valuable given how shallow the third base position is this year. He is also widely available as he is rostered in only 11.2% of ESPN leagues. I have held Adell on my mixed dynasty team since 2019. The combination of power and speed is just too alluring for me. He has certainly given me enough reasons to lose patience with him given the frequency of his strikeouts and his inconsistent offense. And yet, I keep giving him a pass and would prefer to blame Joe Maddon for the poor handling that Adell has received. Maddon certainly never filled the young Jo up with inspiration and confidence, but some compelling facts are there
for us to look at. Jo Adell’s 140 games at the Triple AAA level have seen him hit 40 home runs. He was also on the precipice of a major league promotion in 2020 with no minor league option to go to for seasoning. And struggle he did in 2020 striking out nearly 40% of the time. But here we are in 2022 and Adell was called up and went 2-for-5 on July 13th. His batting average in 89 at bats is .270 with 3 home runs and 2 stolen bases. STATCAST has shown that his sprint speed is in the Top
Travis Swaggerty – OF – Pittsburgh Pirates. Swaggerty was called up for five short days in early June. In those five short days he was given 9 plate appearances. I just can’t understand why major league teams do this. To me, it amounts to professional malpractice. If your job is to draft amateur talent, develop that talent to its fullest ability and then transition such talent into a major league job, why do teams do such foolishly short promotions? You do have to admire how Swaggerty has handled the demotion. In 22 games back down at Triple AAA, he has reached base safely in 20 of the 22 contests. He has played all three outfield positions competently. In a National League only league I would be adding Swaggerty right now or at least shortly from now. He looks like a bonafide September call up to me, and the increased positional flexibility is the sort of thing you love to see in September callups. This is a good player with good power and a good skill set.

Scotch & (Sea)Water – A Deadly Cocktail

Drunk driving, whether that be in a car or in a boat, is one place where I actually feel the legal penalties are too lenient. If a person, uninfluenced by booze, drove a car or a boat recklessly and hurt or even killed someone, they would get a more severe sentencing in many jurisdictions than doing the same thing while drunk, “under the influence” as the legal saying goes. In past ages, drinking and still being able to drive, whether that be a car or boat, might have been considered a badge of honor in certain circles. Today, thank goodness, it is considered reckless lunacy. And things are worse on the water than on the land. This column is about that.
Oh That Swaying Feeling
Often times, when I come in from a boat ride with the family, some of the more lubberly members of the family say, “I can still feel the swaying!” If they happen to jump in the shower, it really gets intensified and they joke that they had to hold on to the shower wall to keep from tipping over! This is clear evidence of the dramatic impact the marine environment has the body's sensory perception system. While boating, we are confronted with conflicting information from the eyes, feet and inner ear. The horizon is constantly moving – up, down and sideways
– as the boat moves beneath our feet. Our conscious brain has no problem with intellectualizing this. But the unconscious part of our brain is getting sensory overload. This can result in reactions ranging from slight queasiness to absolutely debilitating nausea.
Boating Under the Influence (BUI). This law pertains to every vessel, foreign or domestic, operating in U.S. waters, as well as U.S. vessels on the high seas. Penalties may include fines, jail, impoundment of boats and in some states the loss of boating and/or driving privileges.
The marine environment is full of “stressors” – the Sun, glare, vibration – to name a few that are all pretty common out there. Stressors intensify the effects of alcohol, drugs and some medications. They can cause fatigue, reduced coordination, weak judgment and slow reaction time. And forget about the vision of the St Bernard saving you from the cold by giving you brandy. Alcohol makes the body more susceptible to the effects of cold water, not less.
Back in 2008, Operation Dry Water (ODW) was started in partnership with the US Coast Guard, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and partner agencies. It is a national weekend of BUI detection and enforcement aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities and fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water. Zero tolerance is of course the posture, then and now. While ODW is year round, the heightened emphasis was over the July 4th weekend.
Not surprisingly, all of this adds to boating accidents. U.S. Coast Guard data shows that, in boating deaths involving driving under the influence, more than half the victims capsized their boats and/or fell overboard. Over 1 in 5 boating deaths are linked back to the use of alcohol.
The Law
Every state in the Union prohibits the operation of a boat while under the influence of alcohol. The US Coast Guard, as a federal entity, enforces a federal law that prohibits

How often should I check the titling and designated beneficiaries on my accounts?
You should be checking on your accounts as often as you review your estate plan. In general, we recommend an estate plan review every three to five years. Any change in life circumstances or family, or changes in the law, will warrant a review of your plan as well. The proper titling of your accounts is crucial to the success of your estate plan. Depending on the type of asset, it can be in your sole name, in a joint ownership, or as a convenience account. A convenience account allows another individual to take action on the account, such as signing checks and making payments. They are not a true joint owner of the account. A convenience account is subject to a beneficiary designation or distribution under Will or Trust. Beyond titling, accounts also have a beneficiary or transfer on death designation. This dictates who inherits the account assets after the death of the account owner. Life insurance policies and retirement accounts allow beneficiary
They no longer need the guardian listed in their wills. In fact, the adult child may now be the appropriate choice as agent under power of attorney and health care proxy. It may also be wise to create a trust for estate tax planning, Medicaid planning, probate avoidance, or some other strategy.

Estate planning is not one and done. As you change, so should your plan. Titling and after death designations trump a Will or Trust. Not considering these titling or after death designations when creating a Will or Trust can render an estate plan useless. For example, take the scenario of a young couple starting out, living in a rental, and just had their first child. The assets they have may consist of a 401k with their employer and life insurance. They are likely concerned about who will be the guardian of their child if something should happen to both of them. The Will should name a guardian for their child, and any future children they may have. Additionally, the Will must have a testamentary trust to hold the retirement assets and life insurance proceeds. They would name with a trusted friend or family member as trustee to manage
these funds. They always need to make the necessary changes to their beneficiary designations. Periodically, this couple should revisit their estate plan. They should be thinking about who they named to act as guardian and trustee. Are the designated individuals still appropriate? Have they attained more assets that need to be handled in a different manner? Do they now have a taxable estate? Beyond their
personal circumstances, there may be a law change that could impact the way the plan was set up. As an example, the Federal SECURE Act went into effect in January 2020. This law changed how individuals inherit tax-deferred retirement accounts, including 401ks. This change in the law warrants a review and possible update to existing Wills. Fast forward many years later. This same couple now has adult children.
Estate plans should change with you, adapting to your life and changing laws. So often we see individuals forget what is in their documents or they title accounts without considering the consequences of those choices. Your estate planning attorney should be asking about each asset, how it is titled and how you want it to be distributed. With this information, they can create a comprehensive plan and corresponding documents that makes sense for you. Mesothelioma & Veterans
VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Veterans with mesothelioma should file for VA benefits, especially those who served in the military during the 20th century. Nearly every branch of the military relied on asbestos. Veterans with mesothelioma may receive 100% disability compensation and other types of assistance from the VA, including VA health care services and special monthly compensation. The surviving spouse of a veteran who dies of service connected disability is eligible for dependency and indemnity compensation.
How was Asbestos Used in the Military? All modes of military transportation contained asbestos products such as thermal insulation, electric wiring insulation, brake pads and clutch pads. Barracks and other buildings on military bases were made with asbestos cement and a variety of
other asbestos-containing construction materials. With the Navy there were large amount of asbestos in boiler rooms, pump rooms and engine rooms in the ships. Asbestos was also found in gaskets, floor coverings and cement. It was also found in sleeping quarters, wardroom and turrets of the ships. The Air Force used Asbestos in aircrafts, barracks and even the air-cooling systems. Asbestos was also used in the older buildings at Parris Island where most Marines go for boot camp. In addition the military deployed to combat zones in foreign countries faced an exposure risk when asbestosladen buildings were destroyed causing asbestos fibers to contaminate the air in military zones.

three types, or locations of mesothelioma; 1 - Pleural mesothelioma affects the protective lining of the lungs, the pleura. It is the most common location were the disease occurs – about 75% of all diagnosed cases are
pleural. 2 - Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdominal cavity, the area containing several organs, including the stomach, intestines, kidney and liver. It is the second most common
location where about 20 to 24 percent of all mesotheliomas occur. 3 - Pericardial mesothelioma affects the lining of the heart. One of the rarest locations mesothelioma occurs accounts for about 1% of all cases.

Exorcism is forcing an unwanted spirit or demon to leave its host. In the ancient world exorcism was thought to depend on the innate power of the exorcist and the specific words or activities used by him to expel a demon. Exorcism involves the practice of casting out one or more demons from a person believed to be possessed. The exorcist is an individual with special powers or skills. This person may use prayers and religious material such as set formulae, gestures, symbols, icons, or amulets. The exorcists often invoke the names of God, Jesus, archangels and angels, and various saints to support the exorcism. But exorcists almost always cast out demons in the name of Jesus. Those considered to be possessed are not regarded as evil in themselves or totally responsible for their actions because possession is
considered to be manipulation of an unwilling victim by a demon resulting in harm to self or others. Accordingly, we regard exorcism as a cure not a punishment. Mainstream rituals usually take this into account, making sure there is no violence inflicted upon the possessed victim, only that they be restrained if there is the possibility of violence on their part. Signs of possible demonic possession include speaking foreign or ancient languages of which the possessed has no prior knowledge, supernatural abilities and strength, knowledge of things which the possessed has no way of knowing, an aversion to anything holy, and profuse blasphemy or sacrilege. Mark’s gospel depicts Jesus as an active exorcist with commanding authority over demons and evil spirits. Matthew and Luke suggest

that exorcism was of critical importance in understanding Jesus. Jesus is reported by Mark as telling an evil spirit to “Be silent and come out of him.” This occurs numerous times throughout the gospels. While He appears to rely on His own personal power, when asked about His method
Jesus said he expelled demons by the power of the spirit or finger of God. Jesus believed He was relying on an external authority. In the dogma of the Catholic Church, exorcism is a sacramental not a sacrament. It is unlike baptism or reconciliation (confession). Unlike a sacrament,
exorcism’s effectiveness does not depend on the fixed use of a definite ritual or on the ordered sequence of prescribed actions. Its success depends upon two elements: authorization from valid church authorities, such as a bishop, and the faith of the exorcist. Solemn exorcisms can be exercised only by an ordained priest. Jesus first exerted His authority over Satan when being tempted by him in the desert during His forty day fast. At this time, He commanded him to “Begone Satan” and the devil left His presence. In view of the prevalence of exorcisms in the gospels it is understandable that Jesus made the unprecedented claim that His exorcisms were both the spearhead of his ultimate victory over Satan and an important factor in the realization of the Kingdom of God on Earth.
