Revenue to Give Communities Economic Boosts

Suffolk County 3rd District Legislator, Jim Mazzarella, appointed Joseph Maiorana to serve on the Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Panel. Maiorana has been serving as Assistant Community Development Director for the Town of Riverhead's Economic Development Agency since 1994, with experience in redevelopment planning, and is responsible for researching, writing and administering federal, state and county grant awards in excess of $2 million annually. Maiorana is currently President of the MasticsMoriches-Shirley Community Library, and has served previously as a trustee of the board since 1998. Referencing the intent of funding downtown revitalization grant programs, Legislator Mazzarella said, "Downtown revitalization is an important part of sustainable growth in Suffolk County and helps define our communities and quality of life." With the Panel charged with a specific mission, Mazzarella continued, "The Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Panel was created to advise the Suffolk County Legislature on
issues affecting the resurgence and economic viability of our downtown business districts." The Panel recommended the creation of downtown revitalization grant programs aimed at helping municipalities (towns, villages, community organizations), and to expand their efforts to enhance their downtowns and attract visitors and shoppers into the area, the Legislator added. The goal? To stimulate economic activity throughout communities across the county. In a recent interview, Maiorana explained that revenue from the County's designated fund is designed to underwrite downtown Revitalization projects. "The Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Committee will consider eligible recipients, (municipalities), who submit applications for projects," Maiorana stated. "We will review the projects and at which level of funding they will be (distributed). This year in particular," Maiorana pointed out, "the County has received applications for more projects than in the previous years." Maiorana noted the Downtown Revitalization grants will "provide a valuable way to infuse communities with necessary funding to jumpstart

their projects... and I'm certainly grateful that Legislator Mazzarella has confidence in me to effectively advocate projects throughout the 3rd Legislative District." Specific to the County's 3rd Legislative District is a series of three grants which, if approved, will make marked and appreciable enhancements to the applicants' projects. The
Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce and the MasticsMoriches-Shirley Community Library, for instance, have partnered for first-time funding including $50,000 to level and grade property to be leased from Suffolk County on Neighborhood Road; $150,000 to offset the construction of a park to be sited for the Library to present programs for the
community; and $75,000 for an electronic informational marquee to be situated at the Library's Mastic Beach annex. Since its inception, the Downtown Revitalization Grant Program has funded such projects that include but are not limited to sidewalks, streetlights, public restrooms, off-street parking, renovated alleyways and others.
Violets Cove Demolition Clears Way for Waterfront Park By Jennine Jubik It was a great day for the environment and the ability of residents to access the waterfront that makes our area such a great place to live as the old Violets Cove restaurant was torn down to make way for a new park. Ten years after it was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy, the dilapidated building overlooking Moriches Bay in Mastic Beach was demolished
as residents and local officials looked on. Acquired by the county through tax foreclosure, the 1.2-acre property will connect to the Mastic-Shirley Conservation Area opening up more than six miles of public access to the waterfront. The project is part of a larger effort to revitalize Mastic Beach and offers an opportunity for responsible, resilient development. According to Assemblyman
Joe DeStefano, the county is utilizing a $1 million grant from the New York Department of State’s Local Waterfront Revitalization Program to hire Narchitects a Brooklyn firm specializing in public spaces that will work with local residents and officials in designing the park area. “Our waterfront is an extraordinary resource and with this project, access will be dramatically increased,” DeStefano said. “The Violet Cove Redevelopment Design plan will be a community-based effort to ensure maximum public enjoyment of a property that has been dilapidated and dormant for nearly a decade,” said Suffolk Legislator Jim Mazzarella. “It is a key part of the effort to revitalize the entire Mastic Peninsula and restore it to the prime waterfront community it once was.” Also attending the demolition ceremony was Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine who noted the extent of public beach access the area affords. Very few communities on Long Island provide such open access to
the waterfront,” the Supervisor said. “Living on an island, we are blessed with outstanding natural resources and this project will let people fish, hike, kayak, beach-comb picnic, sun, and just simply enjoy the outdoors.” Also attending the event was County Executive Steve Bellone and former Village of Mastic Beach mayor Bob Miller. “This is what we always envisioned for our area, a place when people and families can go to enjoy what living in a beach community has to offer,”
Miller said. According to Brookhaven Councilmen Dan Panico, the town waived the landfill fees for the demolition debris and remains fully engaged in the Mastic Beach redevelopment effort having recently chose a special master to improve the business district. As part of the effort, the town installed new lighting along Neighborhood Road. “Residents and officials at all levels are working together to make the Mastic Beach improvement a reality,” Panico said.

On June 24, Supervisor Ed Romaine visited the Suffolk County Radio Club’s Amateur Radio Field Day at the Longwood Youth Sports Complex in Yaphank. The event celebrated the club’s 75th year, making it the oldest amateur radio club on Long Island. Founded in 1947, the Suffolk County Radio Club (SCRC) is dedicated

Prior to paving eight roadways just north of South Street in the vicinity of the Manorville Fire Department, crews inspected and installed new drains and repaired and replaced damaged concrete curbing and aprons. Roadways resurfaced include: Bensel Street, Carmody Street, Irvin Place (LIE South Service Road), Ryerson Avenue, Sohmer Street, Silas Carter Road, Wadleigh Avenue and Wilber Avenue. The total cost for this paving project was approximately $540,000. “This was one of the first paving projects to be completed during our 2022 paving season,” said Superintendent Losquadro.

“Ryerson is heavily traveled by motorists accessing the LIE and, the Manorville Fire Department sits on Silas Carter Road, which was in need of repair. I was grateful to kick off our paving season resurfacing these roadways and providing relief for all who travel them.”
Councilman Panico said, “Paving our roads is a priority for the Town. Rising costs and inflation have seriously affected municipal finances everywhere. Despite the rising costs, we will resurface as much as possible for our residents.”
Three Eagles Honored
During their annual reorganization meeting on July 6, the South Country School District Board of Education elected Cheryl A. Felice as its new president and E. Anne Hayes as vice president. Both were sworn in by District Clerk Christine Flynn. Also sworn in by Flynn at the meeting were new board trustees Joseph Barry, Rafyel Flippen and Tara Kavanagh. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Giani, District Clerk Flynn, District Clerk Pro-Tem Sara Cioffaletti and District Treasurer Christine Johnson also took the oath of office.

Rocky Point Hometown Heroes Event Residents gathered to celebrate Hometown Heroes, an annual event sponsored by the Rocky Point Sound Beach Chamber of Commerce for VFW Post 6249 to celebrate the Fourth of July and honor passed and present veterans from the community with pole banners hung along Broadway, King Road, Prince and 25a. Over 48 banners of veterans were hung. Those on the banners included heroes who had fought in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the most recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The chamber raised $5,100 and donated it to the VFW. Gary Pollakusky, President and Executive Director of the chamber and Joe Cognitore, VFW Post 6249 Commander led the crowd in thanking vets for their sacrifices. Included in the event was a riveting reading and commentary from WWII veteran Bob Levy followed by the traditional reading of the Declaration of Independence. Distinguished guests in attendance included Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy, Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio and Chief of Staff to the Suffolk County Legislature and Congressional candidate Nick LaLota.

On July 2, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Center Moriches Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner at the Bellport Country Club. During the event, the Supervisor honored the department award recipients, including the Incoming and
Outgoing Officers, Length of Service Awards, High Point Awards and more. Each was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Supervisor for their life saving efforts in service to the community.

Remembering TWA Flight 800 By Fred Towle Jr.
I had been elected to the Suffolk County Legislature in 1995 and I had only been in office for seven months. I was having dinner with friends at Okey Dokey’s Restaurant in Patchogue, when my pager went off advising me that a plane had crashed somewhere in Center Moriches. Since Center Moriches was part of my Legislative District, I decided to leave dinner and start heading back to my district. As I was traveling in the car, I started getting more pages and now phone calls. I then ran into Suffolk County Executive, Bob Gaffney. He was also en route to the scene and suggested that I follow his car, which I did. We headed to the incident command post, which was the Coast Guard Station in East Moriches. By the time we arrived at the Coast Guard Station, we were advised that the plane had actually crashed in the Atlantic Ocean. Soon, the small Coast Guard Station became the scene of the largest search and rescue operation most likely ever undertaken by the County of Suffolk. Every federal, state, county and town governmental agency one could think of set up camp at the Coast Guard Station. Our EMS and Fire Volunteers
and many recreational boaters were also involved in the search and rescue mission from the very beginning. Within hours, every media outlet known to man had also arrived at the site and started reporting what little information was available at the time. For the next five to seven days, everyone basically lived at the Coast Guard Station. Many were directly involved in the rescue and then recovery mission. Many were there to cut through the governmental red tape. Many were there to try and determine what actually happened. Many were there to try to help and provide support and guidance. As I sat through many of the briefings and talked to officials, I could see that one of the most difficult tasks was coordinating all of the governmental agencies and volunteers that were trying to help speed up the recovery efforts. After having been at the site of the crash for seven or eight hours, I boarded a Port Authority Helicopter with Governor George Pataki, County Executive Gaffney and Congressman Felix Grucci to evaluate the crash site in the Atlantic Ocean. Within a few minutes, we were at the site. It was pretty dark, but you could see fires burning on the water, numerous lights and dozens of small ships and boats.

As I looked out the window, I was left in shock over the size of the area of impact of this disaster. We returned to the Coast Guard Station for one of numerous media briefings. We walked out into a large open field and County Executive Gaffney took to the microphone to give the best update he could. Within seconds, the field went from night to day. Every light from the global media world was turned on to report what had happened and what was being done to help the families of the victims. Following the media briefing, we were brought into the Coast
Guard garage. This area had been set up as a temporary morgue. Items and parts recovered from the plane were also stored in this area. It was clear after walking through this area, that the recovery and identification of victims would take months. A memorial service would later be held at Smith Point County Park in Shirley for family members and friends of the victims, volunteers, officials and local residents that had been touched by the tragedy. The Suffolk County Legislature would later approve legislation and funding to construct the “TWA Flight 800 Memorial” at
Smith Point. This memorial was also supported through volunteer work and donations. Clearly, this is a tragedy that should never have happened. Years later, the tragedy was blamed on design and operational problems of the 747 airliner. It took years to force corrections to be made, much of which still is being fixed today. Sunday, marks the 26th Anniversary of the tragedy of TWA Flight 800. Let’s all remember and keep the families and friends of those lost in this horrible tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN A major part of the vineyard where the now thriving wine industry in Suffolk County began—land on which, in 1973, Louisa and Alex Hargrave began a vineyard—was sold last month. Giovani Borghese, the owner of Borghese Vineyard & Winery, closed on the sale of 66 acres of what had been Hargrave Vineyards. However, Borghese Vineyard & Winery will continue to operate its winery and tasting room and own the remaining 18-acre tract at the oldest vineyard on Long Island. The Hargraves sold the vineyard in 1999 to Giovani’s parents, Marco and Ann Marie. Marco Borghese was killed in a car crash in Wading River in 2014, just days after Ann Marie Borghese lost her battle with cancer. Giovani Borghese “closed on the sale of a 66-acre portion of his family’s Cutchogue vineyard, barns and home in a transaction that allows him to use the property while continuing to own and operate the winery, tasting room and an 18-acre tract of Long Island’s oldest vineyard,” Newsday reported.
Borghese last year “considered putting the entire 84.39-acre property up for sale for $6.5 million, but earlier this year a buyer came along willing to accommodate his original plan to sell the 66-acre tract.” “Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed but Borghese originally put that portion of the property on the market for $3.69 million,” said Newsday. The new owner of the 66 acres was not identified. Newsday said Borghese commented that the transaction represented the accomplishment of the “original goal I set out to achieve” by keeping the core of the family’s operation and also farming the land he sold to the buyer. Louisa Hargrave in her book, The Vineyard, wrote: “I was 25 and Alex was 27. With no farm experience and little life experience, we really didn’t think the vines would need much attention. Before we bought the farm in Cutchogue, neither one of us had grown so much as a vegetable garden … The idea of the vineyard at that point was still a fantasy whose

only tangible basis in reality lay in the 10,000 rooted, grafted vines we had bought.” She and Alex met as students at Harvard and shared a love of fine wine and a dream of producing it in America. They’d been told by John Tomkins, an agricultural scientist for Cornell Cooperative Extension in Ithaca, that “there’s this guy on Long Island who has been growing table grapes.’” That was John Wickham, who worked some of the oldest continually cultivated land in the U.S. on a 287-acre farm in Cutchogue that goes back to
1661. “It was the day before Thanksgiving, 1972,” wrote Ms. Hargrave in her book. Wickham told the couple how “I was called crazy” for moving away from potatoes to grow peaches and cherries and other fruit on Long Island. “He took us to bodies of water and explained how they moderated the climate” — and made this possible. The Hargraves figured they could grow cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir and merlot and chardonnay in Suffolk County, the grapes from which the great wines of Bordeaux and
Burgundy were made. They were correct. Wickham, who died in 1994 at 85, was long a farmer and long vice chairman of the Suffolk County Planning Commission and chairman of the Southold Town Planning Board, and deeply involved in seeking to preserve Suffolk County as a top agricultural area in New York State. A substantial wine industry— which today produces highly rated wine—has come relatively suddenly in Suffolk County. Most of the land now planted with grape vines had been used to grow potatoes, but then the once mighty Long Island potato faced stiff competition nationally. The Suffolk County Farmland Preservation Program, begun in 1974, the year after the Hargraves planted their first wine grapes, and the Community Preservation Fund in the five East End towns, and other county, state, town and private initiatives to save farmland, have all been instrumental in encouraging the rise of a wine industry in Suffolk.

The Path to Soto

As the Major League Baseball trade deadline approaches, the hot stove rumor mill is heating up. As you'd expect the New York Yankees are at the forefront of many trade speculations. The Yankees have long been a model of aggressiveness when it comes to obtaining quality players to give them a push to a championship. The new style Yankees, led by Hal Steinbrenner, not Gerorge, have pulled back on that approach but the fans and media think something big might be on the horizon. Juan Soto could be that something big. Before we speculate on Soto and the viability of a deal like that happening there are a few things to cover. First, Juan Soto will cost a boatload of talent in a trade. Talent which would read something like Anthony Volpe, Jasson Dominguez, Trey Sweeney and more. Second, the Bombers have to be sure that he
will sign a long term deal, and lastly can they fit him under their self imposed tax, while also retaining Aaron Judge. The prospect deal can be done. The extension is expected if Soto comes to the Bronx as well. He recently turned down a $425 million dollar, 13 year offer from the Nationals. But, that is 'only' $33 million per season. A relative bargain when you consider Stanton, Cole and other deals that are on the books. The big hurdle is fitting Soto and Judge in the same outfield, or better said, on the same payroll. Here is a way the Yankees can fit it all together. Aaron Judge will want about $40 million per year, while Soto wants close to that. That's close to $80 million dollars per year that the tight fisted Hal would have to part with. But, there is some hope for Yankees fans. After this

We love second acts in American culture. The once hot act that caught all of the attention previously goes into a period of relative obscurity and returns to the spotlight. It is a wonderful thing to witness and we see it across a number of industries and fields. In music, the great band the Eagles disappeared for the 1980’s after the band broke up and in 1994 released the “Hell Freezes Over” reunion album and tour. The American public missed them for sure but FM radio still played their great hits of the 1970’s and their second act proved long and fabulously successful. Well we have a number of great second acts to talk about in baseball coming up this summer, and after initial success came disappointment and now the second act looks likely to occur. Jump on board and make sure you purchase your tickets early for this ride. Akil Baddoo was the Rule 5 story of the 2021 season. And while his talent was undeniable, there were rough edges to his game that hinted he could struggle. Still, he batted .259 with a respectable .330 on base percentage due to 45

walks and he stole 18 bases while clubbing 13 home runs. And while 4 of those home runs came in early April and that went a long way to giving him exposure early in the season as a Rule 5 draft pick, he was exciting. Well, Baddoo got himself demoted to the minor leagues here in 2022 with a rough start and in 17 games he scuffled to a .140 batting average and a .438 OPS. An OPS below .500 won’t keep you in the major leaguers for very long, and certainly an OPS below .700 won’t keep you on a fantasy baseball team for very long. But he hasn’t sulked down in Triple AAA and he is making a strong case to get himself back to Detroit. Of course this is a small sample. Baddoo did land on the IL right after the demotion. But he now has 24 Triple AAA games under his belt, and he is batting .303 with an even .400 on base percentage and is slugging at a .528 clip. I always love batting profiles that go 300/400/500. And Baddoo covers a lot of ground in the outfield, has very good speed and that makes him a threat on the basepaths. But what catches my eye more than

season Joe Gallo and his $10 million comes off the books, Anthony Rizzo also has only a club option of $16 million, along with Severino's $11 million option and Chapman is off the books with his $16 million. You can start to see a path. If they let all of them walk, which they won't, but if they do they save $53 million dollars next season. The year after that they will lose Josh Donaldson's insane $21 million. Meaning that New York can say after 2023 they are saving $74 million, or roughly what Soto and Judge would be paid. After that, things actually get better. Long term is where the concern is but even that has some bright spots. Stanton's monster contract comes off the books right around when Judge would be in that mid 30's age danger zone. In this scenario it takes a lot of math gymnastics to make sense
of everything. The obvious questions of who will fill in for guys like Rizzo and Sevy come to mind. The next question is will the Yankees be ok with adding any money at all? This
does show it can be done. The chances are slim, but there is a path to an OF with Juan Soto and Aaron Judge, instead of the speculation that it will be Juan Soto or Aaron Judge.
The Game is Filled with Second Chances
anything is that he is walking at a rate of 13 percent while keeping his strikeouts below 20 percent of his at bats. And that is the sort of plate discipline that will get him back to the major leagues. Robbie Grossman and Willi Castro are not going to keep Baddoo down in the minors for long. Not with an OPS below .500 for Castro and below .600 for Grossman. Race out and add Baddoo back to your team. In both redraft and dynasty formats he should play in both August and September. Heck, he
could even play for 3 weeks in July. His ownership in ESPN leagues is down to 8.8%. The guy who had him in my dynasty league dropped him several weeks after the minor league demotion. Oh, and he turns 24 years old in August. This is still a young player. Due to long term injuries, there are several very strong starting pitchers that will be making 2nd half returns and if your format allows for an IL slot then as long as your were not riddled with
injuries it was relatively painless to stash them. We use 5 IL slots in my Dynasty league but even in an NL-only redraft league our benches are deep enough that you can always stash away a hurt player for a late summer revival. At the very end of my NL-only draft the names can become quite obscure and it feels like you are the bottom of the barrel. Which is why I took the reasonable gamble that Mike Soroka could help me at some point hopefully in August. Soroka, you will recall has had 2 tears of his Achilles tendon. And while it is a legendary injury and comebacks from it can be long and difficult it seems that Soroka is on the mend and throwing well in his rehab. Soroka has now been throwing for over a month, and manager Brian Snitker has been impressed by what he has seen. Expect a rehab assignment to begin soon and it will probably last at least 3 weeks but Atlanta could see him return to meaningful pennant chase appearances this summer. Also returning from injuries this summer will be LA Dodger Dustin May and Boston Red Sox starter James Paxton.

Understanding Life Estates
Q: Who owns the property when there is a life estate? A:
A life estate is a type of joint ownership of real property. With a life estate, two or more individuals have an ownership interest in the property. The individual holding the life estate – the life tenant retains the legal right to occupy and use the property during his or her lifetime. Upon the death of the life tenant, the property passes to the remainderman without the need for probate. At that point, the remainderman assumes all property rights and obligations. A life estate is usually created through a deed, but can be created in a Will or a trust. For example, Husband's Will may leave a vacation home to his spouse for her lifetime and to his children upon her death.
Alternatively, an owner can execute a deed transferring the property to a third party and retain a life estate on the face of the deed. The life tenant is entitled to all rents and profits during their lifetime. The life tenant must maintain and pay costs on the property, including property taxes and upkeep. The remainderman has no right to use the property or collect any income generated by the property while the life tenant is still living. The remainderman does however have an interest in ensuring that the life tenant does not damage the property or diminish its value. A life tenant does not have complete control over the property. The life tenant cannot sell, mortgage or in any way encumber the property. If

either party wants to sell the property, both the life tenant and remainderman must agree. The life tenant usually receives a smaller portion based on the value of the life estate, calculated using actuarial tables.
The transfer of real property subject to a life estate is a tactical estate planning tool used to avoid the probate of real property after death. A life estate can also protect real property from certain creditors. Medicaid cannot put
a lien on real property when the recipient only has a life estate because a life estate is not a probate asset. Therefore, Medicaid cannot recover from a Medicaid recipient's estate for the cost of services rendered. Life estates can be valuable options for clients seeking to simplify their estate planning. However, there are pitfalls. It is wise to discuss whether this option is suitable for your specific estate plan with an experienced estate planning attorney. It would seem to me that one of the most frightening circumstances to be caught in is a boat afire. It is loaded with high-octane fuel creating toxic smoke; using water to fight the fire can sink the boat; leaving the boat may entail going into another hostile environment – cold and unforgiving water. It doesn’t sound like there are many, if any, good alternatives. Also, fire prevention professionals quote that on average a fire will double in area every 5 minutes. At that rate, it wouldn’t take long to engulf an entire boat. So, time is of the essence and it is highly unlikely that anyone can get to you in time to assist in the fire suppression. You and your crew, most likely, are it.
Causes of Fires
According to many studies such as those conducted by entities such as BOAT/US, surprisingly, the engine is not the most likely source of fires on boats – electricity is. More than half of boat fires (55%) start with wiring or appliance failures. Next come fires started by an overheated engine but they are less than half as likely (24%). Less than 10% of boat fires (8%) start with a fuel leak. Of course, those can reach catastrophic proportions if the fire ignites the fuel tank itself. The rest is a mixed bag of “miscellaneous” – dropped match, stove spills, flare “slag” landing on the boat, etc. An electrical fire such as the one that starts from a frayed/chafed wire is very different than one which is fed by a malfunctioning inverter or generator. like someone was smoking in bed – material is aflame but not being fed by the electricity itself. But it counts as the cause of the fire.
Types of Fire Extinguishers and Who Needs What
First, fire extinguishers themselves are classified into “A”, “B” and “C” types. (There is a type “D” for chemical/ combustible metals fires such as would be created by the magnesium in a flare but I have never seen it successfully used before the flare involved surrounding materials – get the flare off the boat [let the fish below deal with it] and then deal with the fire.) The easiest way to remember what they are used for is thus: “A” – the fire creates ash – paper, bedding, clothes, wood, etc… “B” – the subject afire can boil – “POLs” or petroleum, oils and lubricants… “C” – a charge runs through it – electronic equipment… They also come in sizes (pounds of suppressant). For the private boater, size 1 (I) or 2 (II) are the most common and manageable. The question is really, “How many do I need for my size boat?” And the answers are: All power boats, except outboards, less than 26 feet and of open construction must carry one B-I, U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher. All power boats 26 feet to less than 40 feet must carry two B-I or one
B-II U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. 40 feet to less than 65 feet must carry three B-I or one B-II and 1 B-I U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. Larger vessels must adhere to Federal regulations about automatic fire-suppression systems in enclosed spaces. Well, what are the suppressants and what is best for my boat might be the next set of logical questions. As would seem obvious to even the casual reader, carbon dioxide (CO2) is one suppressant. It smothers the fire by withholding oxygen from the “fueloxygen-heat” equation. CO2 has one not-so-obvious draw back. If you use it on a type-B fire, the high pressure of the CO2 coming out of the canister may very well spread the fire. So, hold CO2 aside. Another suppressant type is “dry chemical.” It can handle “A”, “B” and
type-“C” fires but it also has a problem. The chemical suppressant tends to be corrosive in a marine environment. Yikes. So, hold that dry chemical aside too. What tends to be best, at least for “A” and “B” fires, is foam. It smothers the fire like a blanket. The foam is waterbased so the use of it on an electrical fire (“C”) can be problematic as it may give a medium for the electricity to reach the salver – you! Of course, in a private boat such as found in our area, a foam extinguisher will work just fine for your chart plotter that shorted out.
Where Do I Keep The Extinguishers?
Where I can get to them – plus the sleeping berths. If you awake to a fire, you may have to fight your way out of it. Every other extinguisher should be kept in a convenient place – near the galley but not in it, near the engine but not within the engine space, etc. Use common sense.
Act quickly. If you have help aboard, use it. Have someone turn the boat so the fire is down wind and proceed ahead as slowly as possible to maintain steerage. This will buy you time as the fire can’t fight its way upwind easily. And have the helmsman call the USCG on VHF-16. Get the “rescue starts now” clock going. While reaching for the fire extinguishers, yell – “everybody into life-jackets!” If you do have to abandon ship, you are prepared. Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the flame, not the flames themselves. You are seeking to smother the source of the fire, not the flames per se. Move the fire extinguisher back and forth across the source of the flame to spread the coverage. If the fire has a source such a flowing charge or liquid, and you can get to a shut-off valve, shut it off and starve the fire. And be sure to call the US Coast Guard – ASAP. Get the “rescue starts now” clock started as soon as possible. They won’t get there in time to stop the fire – but they will task someone or something to get there in time to fish you out of the water if you must abandon ship. Be sure to let the USCG know how many people are aboard – they will look for that many people in the water. No one gets left behind. This structure and support had met their lower-level physiological and safety needs. No longer will the military provide food, housing, healthcare, and similar resources. There are no military helpers drill sergeants, or unit leaders like the ones who were available when one transitioned to a new unit. There is no Department of Defense organization in your hometown to assist you with completing your transition of tasks. There are fewer peer, supervisors, family members, and colleagues with whom you can relate to during and after transition. However, this does not have to be the case. Whether you are looking for a lead on a job, social support after relocating to a new town, advice for what to expect when
you transition off active duty, or even a just a place to tell a story without having to explain the acronyms, there are many Veteran organizations out their ready to help complete the transition. The Veteran Service Organizations setup around the country such as the American Legion, AmVets, and Veterans of Foreign Wars are there to help. These organizations were started by veterans and are run by veterans. These are a military alumni network. One of the advantages of an alumni network is that those who have gone before are willing to reach back and assist the next generation. They are places where those who don the military uniform can come together and enjoy one of the things they enjoyed most about serving: people. They are built around bringing together

individuals with a common background in a place where they can share camaraderie and develop relationships. In addition they are the best place to find what’s happening in the military and veteran communities. Most important is the fact that
those Veteran organizations are our representatives to the government, asking the government to pass bill in our favor and needs. For example, it was the American Legion that introduced the GI Bill to congress and has keep up with updating it. Our government will listen to our larger
membership organizations, due to the numbers. On the same token there is no reason not to be a member of two (2) different Veteran organizations, such as one of the above and one associated with the time or war you served in. Many veterans belong to the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and AmVets. One of the most important aspects of our military service was that we were all brothers and sisters looking out for each other. That buddy system was a great way to live and work together. However, It needs to be carried over into our civilian life. We are still brothers and sisters and -more importantbuddies looking out for each other. So let’s join forces and work together to insure that we can receive the benefits and help that we and our comrades need.

The Trial of the Created Angels
OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE The angels were created at the same time that the world was created, but before man. They were created in the good graces of God and in the empyrean heaven. There is a viewpoint that originally, they were not in the presence of God. Had they seen God they would never have chosen to cease basking in His love. They were created therefore in another heaven where they had to give proof of their faithfulness to God and so merit the Beatific Vision, i.e., the sight of God. Like us they have free wills and like us they had to choose between good and evil. Thomas Aquinas teaches that in the angelic nature itself there is no strife between the spirit and the flesh as there is in our natures. But before they were permitted the Beatific Vision they had to choose between their nature, already in the state of grace, and the still higher state of that grace that would admit them to the immediate presence of God forever. In this trial, the majority
remained faithful to God and were immediately received into the Heaven of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They therefore were allowed to view the revealed beauty of God. Once there, they could no longer commit sin. Some of these faithful angels always stand before God and are called the Angels of Contemplation. These are the Seraphs, the Cherubs, and the Thrones. Thomas Aquinas, from whom comes most of our knowledge of angels, believes that these high echelon angels never visit Earth. Others, while always enjoying God’s presence, minister to us. These fall into two groups: the Angels of the Cosmos and the Angels of the Earth. The Angels of the Cosmos are the Dominations, Virtues, and Powers. The Angels of the Earth include the Principalities, Archangels, and Angels. These six groupings in the Choirs of Angels give their care more specifically to us. Most prominent of these are the Angels who serve as our individual guardians.
Unfortunately, many angels fell at the moment of their trial. According to the Book of Revelation, there were as many as a third of all created angels who, led by Lucifer, rebelled against God and were cast into hell. Their great natures, their intellects, and their wills retained their formidable
strength and power. However, their love and sanctity were transformed by their corruption through sin into unrelenting malice and hatred. Realizing that they cannot overcome God, they direct their fierce vengeance toward us, who are destined to replace them and enjoy the glory and happiness that they had given up when
they rebelled from God’s love. These disenfranchised angels did not fall from only one of the Choirs of Angels. Some of these rebels came from even the highest echelons in the Heavenly Host. They now, led by their chief Lucifer who at the fall had his name changed to Satan, roam the Earth seeking the ruin and corruption of God’s faithful servants.
OBITUARY CAMILLE M. McCANN-STAATS 69 of Mastic died on June 22, 2022 at Long Island Community Hospital. Camille was born in Brooklyn and was a clerk for the New York Stock Exchange. She was predeceased by her first husband Bernard McCann. Camille is survived by her loving husband William Staats. She was the devoted mother of Michelle (Joseph) DelaCruz and Nicole (Edward) Fasano; cherished grandmother of Tyler, Jade, Ethan, Cameron and Mila and great grandmother of Jaime Matthew. Family and friends were received at Roma Funeral Home in Shirley on Monday. Wake services were offered by Fr. John Ryan of St. Jude’s RC Church in Mastic Beach. A private cremation took place at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Center Moriches.
