Meet The Dubb’s - The Mastic Beach Developers
By Barbara LaMonica It’s been a long time coming, and there’s seemingly light on the horizon to the Mastic Beach Downtown Revitalization that residents and businesses are looking ahead to. At the helm of the project is the Beechwood Organization, the designated master developer chosen by Brookhaven Town Officials. The high profile developer is no stranger to the Tri Hamlet community, and certainly familiar to Long Island and the outer boroughs of Manhattan. Beechwood Organization principal, Steven Dubb, the younger half of the fatherson team of the family owned business, candidly discussed how the project will unfold as plans take shape. “The project started slowly and will pick up steam over time. So far,” Dubb explained, “we’re working on setting up meetings with community stakeholders and local groups in the Mastic Beach area to get a feel for what they want to improve their surrounding community.” That “dialogue” has commenced between Brookhaven Town Officials and Beechwood, as well as with local community groups. Brookhaven Town Sixth District Councilman and Deputy Supervisor, Dan Panico, recently addressed residents and merchants of
the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce, during which information was provided to the community in an extensive Q and A period. The “target area” for revitalization incorporates Commack Road to the north, Mastic Road to the east, and Neighborhood Road to the south. Architectural and streetscape designs are significant concerns expressed by residential property owners. Dubb explained: “We’re starting with a blank slate, and we’ll be working on selecting the best firm to develop conceptual plans.” Dubb said that “with feedback from the community,” a third party architect and engineering firm will work on developing a sense of place and to improve vehicular traffic and aesthetics throughout the area. Dubb underscored that community input will be key in planning and developing the revitalization of the Mastic Beach Hamlet. Asked about the potential for eminent domain proceedings, (a concern at the forefront and on the minds of property owners), a candid Dubb explained that it is “too soon” in the process to make that determination: “We certainly hope not, but at this point it is way too early to tell, and we don’t know. We will certainly look to acquire some parcels but,” Dubb cautioned that

there may be other developers to work with. Meanwhile, Elysa Goldman is Beechwood’s designated point person to steer the Mastic Beach Downtown Revitalization Project. Dubb said Goldman comes with a wealth of experience in Economic Development and working with private industry to revitalize and develop residential and business properties. “She has transferable skills in that role for Mastic Beach and,” Dubb added referencing Goldman’s consultative role, “she has a feel for the Mastic Beach community.” Dubb touts the Beechwood Organization as the best choice to spearhead the Mastic Beach revitalization initiative. “We’re the right choice,” Dubb

said. “We want to first and foremost, get community feedback to help shape the project, then proceed to move forward to begin improving the community.” A series of community meetings are in the process of being scheduled, where Dubb says he expects an initial concept plan should be prepared to be presented to the community by September or October of 2022. “We like to be proud of what we build.” Dubb said the Mastic Beach initiative will be an aesthetically pleasing concept that will include green and open spaces, sidewalks that perhaps might link to trails, landscaping, accomplished in an environmentally friendly manner. Asked about an estimated completion date, Dubb said he could not yet offer a firm response because of the nature of the multi phase project. “We don’t know where we are yet by design and,” he pointed out underscoring the imperative to incorporate local feedback, “we don’t want to make plans without first getting input from community stakeholders, then address them with proposed development.” The Beechwood Organization was founded in 1995 by CEO, Michael Dubb. Steve joined his father in the business 15 years ago. “We’ve built thousands of homes on Long Island in 40 to 50 communities across Nassau and Suffolk counties, and in the outer boroughs,” Dubb said. “We build affordable to multi million dollar housing, but our sweet spot is building
for the average homeowner ranging in prices from $400,000 to $900,000.” Dubb cites one of Beechwood’s revitalization projects that elevated a oncedepressed area, to what has evolved into a 21st Century thriving community. What is now known as Arverne by the Sea on the Rockaway Peninsula, the once drug and crime riddled 120 acre spread now boasts a 1,000 residential mixed-use community. “We work with municipalities, counties, towns~we do it all from residential to retail,” Dubb said. “We’re not just a one trick pony. We have a history of successful projects, and now, we’re excited to have the opportunity to do this project in Mastic Beach.” Community and business leaders have been positively optimistic about the redevelopment efforts. “I am pleased by Councilman Panico’s appearance at our last meeting. The things that I have heard and read from the Beachwood organization have also been positive. But let’s make no mistake about it, the developer and the town must make sure that the redevelopment process of Neighborhood Road is transparent and open to the public. The merchants, tenants and property owners are the main stake holders. We need to have a front seat at the table throughout this process,” said Matthew Towle, Vice President of the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce and representative of The South Shore Press.

Brookhaven Highway Department Offers Teen Driver Safety Programs
100 Deadliest Days of Summer Driving Season Began on Memorial Day

– As we enter the stretch of “100 deadliest days” of the summer driving season—Memorial Day through Labor Day—according to AAA, the automobile research and educational group, the Brookhaven Highway Department’s Division of Traffic Safety will be offering free Teen Driver Safety Programs at Safety Town on Friday, June 10, OR Thursday, July 7, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Teenagers 15 and older and their parents are invited to participate in an interactive experience exhibiting the dangers of texting or drinking and driving. During this intense, real-life program, certified instructors with many years of defensive driving and accident investigation experience will talk with participants about the importance of developing safe habits when traveling the roadways. Teens will then use electric cars to complete obstacle courses designed to simulate driving while texting and impaired.
“Programs such as this are crucial in showing young, new drivers the tremendous threats drunken or distracted driving can create,” said Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro. “Especially as we move into prom and graduation season, we want to make sure students hear that message; when they’re behind the wheel of a car, it is entirely within their control to prevent a tragic accident caused by driving while distracted or impaired.”

Throughout the year, Safety Town hosts bicycle safety rodeos, car seat inspections, teen distracted driving programs, and defensive driving classes. William Floyd Elementary School Students to Compete in Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary Science Fair Aspiring and talented William Floyd Elementary School studentscientists recently showcased their scientific knowledge in the annual school-wide science fair. Each student grade-level winner has been entered into the Brookhaven National Laboratory 2022 Elementary Science Fair on Friday, June 10. All of the science fair projects were displayed in the hallways throughout the school as classes walked through to see the type of projects their classmates designed. Reading Campfire Night Eastport-South Manor Central School District students who attend Tuttle Avenue and South Street elementary schools and their families braved the weather on May 20 to attend Reading Campfire Night, a family literacy night. Called Reading Under the Stars–Family Literacy Night, students entered Tuttle Avenue Elementary School and searched for the perfect place to set up a sleeping bag or blanket and some books to join in on the fun. The night included story time with Principal Jeanmarie Zambelli, Bingo for Books and other family activities, and concluded with everyone taking time to tuck into their campsites to read.

America’s Boating Club Offers Free On the Water Training
This week, America’s Boating Club of the Great South Bay – a unit of the United States Power Squadrons will begin offering no-cost on the water training to the boating public beginning this spring. This training is designed for first time boaters or boaters who have recently upgraded to a larger or different type of boat and would like individualized instruction using their new vessel, which will enhance the skills for the safe operation of their boat, which will break through any barriers that may limit their boating enjoyment. The training program is a hands on, one-on-one on-thewater training session with a student on their own boat, which allows the content of the training to be customized, to fit the needs of each student. This program is intended for boaters who are looking for the special hands-on training in order to operate their boat safely and with confidence. The criterion for this training includes:

Senator Palumbo & Assemblyman Thiele Urge Passage of Karilyn’s Law
Legislation Makes Needed Reforms to Guardianship Laws to Help Families Visit Loved Ones Senator Anthony Palumbo (R,C-New Suffolk) and Assemblyman Fred Thiele (I-Sag Harbor) today hosted a press conference calling for the passage of Karilyn’s Law. The legislation is named after Karilyn Montanti, a senior and victim of the guardianship system, whose loved ones have been denied due process rights to be heard and the right to an evidentiary hearing, which would simply allow family and friends to visit. The lawmakers were joined by Christine Montanti, daughter of Karilyn Montanti, and guardianship reform advocates from around the state. Karilyn’s Law prevents a guardian, care manager, or power of attorney from arbitrarily terminating visitation rights and isolating vulnerable individuals who are being held
in involuntary guardianship. This new legislation provides for the ward or family members, who have been denied their due process rights, to be heard and to have an evidentiary hearing before the court within 10 days of bringing an application. “Throughout the pandemic we saw the pain and anguish of individuals who were unable to visit family members in hospitals and nursing homes. This pain is felt everyday by countless New Yorkers who are blocked from seeing their aging relatives due to the state’s current guardianship law,” said Senator Palumbo. “Karilyn’s law is new legislation that would right a wrong and provide families and friends with greater opportunity to visit loved ones who are under guardianship.” “Far too many people have been taken advantage of and suffered greatly due to abuse under conservatorships,” said Assemblymember Thiele. “This bill will put an end to a loophole
that has allowed malicious guardians unquestioned authority to deprive individuals of simple visitations with loved ones over personal differences, as in the case of Karilyn Montanti. I call upon my colleagues in the Legislature to hear the stories of those victimized and isolated under conservatorships and ensure that families are given appropriate due process rights.”
“Guardianship abuse has existed for more than half a century and is currently a national epidemic,” said Christine Montanti, daughter of Karilyn Montanti and advocate for guardianship reform. “My mother was blocked and denied access to her entire family, friends and only grandchild without having an evidentiary hearing, without due process,
or allowing her to attend a hearing. She was never given notice of any hearings that were being held. Individual’s rights are being taken away with little to no recourse. Prisoners seemingly have more rights to appear before the court than my mother does today.” “I am grateful that Senator Palumbo and Assemblymember Thiele are sponsoring this legislation on guardianship reform in the New York State Legislature to safeguard New York State’s most vulnerable individuals and to prevent others who are similarly situated from having to go through this horrific ordeal that my mother has been facing over the past 4 years.” An article in the New Yorker in 2017 revealed an estimated 1.3 million elders in the United States are under the care of guardians who control about $273 billion in assets.
New York City Democrats Look to Skew Local Elections By Jennine Kubik
A hot topic in Albany is the attempt by the Progressive Democrats to change how local elections take place in communities across New York State, a scheme that drew dozens of officials and concerned citizens from Long Island to the Capitol to oppose the measure. “Town and county elections occur every other year and it was set up this way for a reason,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano who is helping lead the opposition. “Having local officials run apart from state and federal candidates allows voters to scrutinize and make decisions on the elected officials closest to their neighborhoods.” The Democrats want town and county candidates to run along with state and federal candidates: the president, senators, house representatives, governor, comptroller, attorney general, legislators, etc. “This would make Election Day much more complicated and drown out local issues,” DeStefano said, adding, “You know the Democrats are up to something when they conveniently exclude New York City from their new rules.” The move comes as debate continues over the use of drop boxes and the mailed-out paper ballots that were prevalent

during the 2020 election. “We should keep our focus on open and honest elections, not the continual manipulation of the rules to favor one party over another,” DeStefano said. “State and federal candidates run one year and town and county candidates run the following year. Lumping them together dilutes the process and decreases the need for local candidates to make their case before the voters.” Opponents noted that in a ballot crowded with so many candidates, people will vote for the major figures and drop off as they get further down the ballot. Putting everyone on the same ballot, they also argue, cannot be seen as an effort to save money since New York City elections
would take place as usual. Speaking out against the measure at a press conference last week were state Senators Alexis Weik, Mario Mattera, and Phil Boyle; Assembly members Jodi Giglio, Doug Smith, Mike Fitzpatrick, Mike Durso, Ari Brown, John Mikulin and Keith Brown; and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Dozens of elected officials and concerned citizens from across the state also descended on the Capitol in opposition. “We will keep the pressure on until the Progressives give up on this attempt to skew the elections in their favor,” DeStefano said. “We must be vigilant in fighting back the zany ideas of the New York City Democrats.”
Assemblyman Joe DeStefano joined his colleagues in Albany last week to call for the repeal of the restriction against schools serving whole milk in student cafeterias. “We believe that fears over the dangers of milk fat are overblown and that making kids drink less-appealing products results in a disinclination to drink milk, resulting in less nutrition,” DeStefano said in supporting a bill to allow
for whole milk to be served. According to DeStefano, the existing ban hurts children and the New York farmers who are the fourth largest producers of milk in the nation. “Dairy farming is the largest agricultural enterprise in New York and they produce over 15 billion tons of milk products every year,” DeStefano said. “Forget skim and fat-free--Let our kids drink Whole Milk!”

Block Island, A World Away
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN “Close to Home, A World Away” is part of the name of a magazine on Block Island. Indeed, just 14 miles east of Montauk Point, little Block Island (6 miles long, 3.5 miles wide) is a world away from Long Island. Now off Block Island is the first off-shore wind farm in the United States. “It’s really something to see, if you’ve never set eyes upon an offshore wind farm” notes the Block Island Guide. The five turbines regularly “supply all of the island’s power needs—and more.” Excess electricity they generate is sent to the mainland of Rhode Island, 9 miles north of Block Island. Block is part of Rhode Island. “The wind farm was built at a cost of about $300 million,” says the Guide. “It is owned and operated by Orsted, a Danish renewable energy company that works to ‘take tangible action to create a world that runs entirely on green energy.’” “On the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, offshore wind farms are now being planned by Orsted for Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Maryland and Virginia. The Block Island project is the
progenitor of the trend for more offshore wind power…”
Somehow the “modern” architecture of the 20th Century never struck Block Island. There are more than 20 Victorian Era hotels and inns on the island. Quaint they are. The houses that dot the landscape are similarly classic. Most of their settings are circumscribed by stone walls. Only in Vermont have I seen more stone walls.
Several major wind farms are to rise off Long Island in coming years. Block Island’s combination of wind energy and solar power—a large number of structures on Block Island are bedecked with rooftop solar photovoltaic panels—provides a model.
More than 47 percent of Block Island is under conservation protection. The Nature Conservancy, which has had a huge role in preserving so much of Block Island, has called it “one of the last great places” in the western hemisphere.
For 92 years, before the offshore wind turbines arrived and in December 2016 when their blades began twirling, Block Island ran on electricity produced by diesel generators operated by the Block Island Power Company. “We were importing nearly 1 million gallons of diesel fuel every year,” Jeffrey Wright, the company’s CEO, was quoted in 2017 in Power Line, an online publication of American Clean Power. The cost of electricity on Block Island was thus triple the national average. And there were mishaps. Earlier in 2016, one of the diesel generators caught fire. And, of course, the greenhouse gasses emitted from the diesel generators were substantial. As climate change hits the world mainly due to the burning of

fossil fuels, getting off electricity generated by oil, coal and gas is imperative. My wife and I were on Block Island on this Memorial Day weekend to celebrate our 61st wedding anniversary. (I met this lass from Huntington our first week at Antioch College in Ohio.) We’ve been to the island a good number of times through the decades usually going there on our sailboat. With the ocean
between Montauk and Block often turbulent—and, oh, that frequent fog!—I’d rather take the Viking Superstar ferry from Montauk. (There is also the year-round ferry from Point Judith, Rhode Island, and in season like the Viking ferry, from Newport, Rhode Island and New London, Connecticut.) Block Island is a piece off New England an hour-and-a-half ferry ride from Montauk. But it’s far more than that.
The Block Island Land Trust is a municipal conservation organization enabled by Rhode Island state legislation in 1986 and funded by a three-percent transfer fee on Block Island land transactions. Its mission is “to protect ecologically sensitive areas, open space and land for agricultural use, preserve viewsheds and provide recreational opportunities.” The shoreline of Block Island— much of it soft, white sand—also features a fringe of Caribbean-like turquoise water. Yes, this place close to home is a world away.

No Love for Nestor

With his signature mustache and loveable personality, Nestor Cortes has become a fan favorite in the Bronx. Yankee fans have been rallying behind Cortes for two seasons now and with good reason. Often, in New York, a fun personality player who plays decently becomes a cult phenomenon. Think of Jeremy Lin, Turk Wendell or Andy Stankiewicz. Sure, they were fun but they weren’t necessarily good players. Very rarely does a cult like following start for a player, who then exceeds all expectations. But, Nestor Cortes is that guy. Cortes is getting plenty of love from Yankees fans, but the odds market is still showing him very little respect. As of June 3rd the betting market shows Justin Verlander with 4 to 1 odds to win the Cy Young leading the way. That is understandable as he is a big name and has had a great season. After him though comes Kevin Gausman at 5 to
1, Shane McClanahan at 7 to 1, Cortes’s teammate Gerrit Cole also sits at 7 to 1, Alex Manoah is 10 to 1 and then Nestor comes in at 11 to 1 odds. Cortes ranks 2nd in the American League with an insane 1.50 ERA, only Martin Perez is below him at 1.42. He comes in at 3rd in the AL in WHIP with a 0.87, he is 5-1 on the season and this all comes with a better than 30% strikeout ratio. That’s Cy Young numbers. The thing is though, he’s been doing this for two years now. While Perez might lead the AL in ERA, he has a long history to draw on and see that Perez is very unlikely to keep this up. He has routinely been a below average pitcher and he will eventually come back to earth. Cortes however has a track record that says he can sustain it. Besides this year where he has pitched 60 innings and 10 starts without allowing more than

The time is right to perform an update on the top prospects in the game of baseball today. We just put the 1/3rd mark of the season behind us and the MLB Draft is right around the corner. And yes, while a good number of prospects made their teams out of spring training, a decent number nursed spring training injuries and a decent number went right out and hit below .200 and got themselves demoted. And while I have always tried to avoid putting ceilings on young baseball players, a decent couple of prospects have got to go back down, freshen up their approaches, and in some cases, restart from scratch to get themselves back to the Show. And then there are the minor leaguers who have taken giant leaps forward, are doing things they weren’t expected to be this far out in front of, and are making names for themselves in their organization’s depth charts. We’ve got a few of each of these to discuss. A number of minor leaguers are rapidly climbing the prospect charts but perhaps none more than so than Colorado Rockies DoubleAA shortstop Ezequiel Tovar.
Fantasy Sports
Tovar did enter the season having cracked his organization’s Top 10 Prospect List, but in all sincerity I don’t see anyone close to him as the #1 talent and not just for the Rockies, but perhaps the entire minor leagues. If Jeremy Pena caught you off guard this spring with the Houston Astros, don’t repeat this mistake with Tovar. Race out and secure this young man’s services for your team and do it right now. Tovar is just 20 years old and is playing in a Double-AA League. And he isn’t just holding his own. He is hitting .326, has an on base percentage of .408 and an OPS above 1.00. Not to be left out, he has stolen 16 bases while only being caught once and has the defensive chops to be a major league SS. Scouts rate his fielding as a 65 on the standard 20-80 scale. As nice of a find as Tovar is, there is another Double-AA shortstop who is really making a name for himself in the Orioles organization. Gunnar Henderson is not yet a household name, and that is why you read my column. This young man does the one thing that I love to see in prospects. He controls the strike
3 runs, we can go back to last season where that streak goes another 9 starts. That’s now 19 straight starts without allowing 4 runs, which he allowed exactly 4 on August 10th last season, his only start with New York allowing more than 3 runs. I get the idea that Verlander inspires confidence because
of his name recognition, but does anyone think a 39 year old off of a major injury will be able to log big innings in August and September for a contending team? Gausman’s ERA is a full run worse than Nestor’s and he already has 3 losses. McClanahan has never pitched more than 123 innings in a season, will the conservative
Rays allow him to get to 180+? Manoah is in the same boat as he hasn’t surpassed 111 innings as a pro. Then there is Cole. While Cole is being paid as an ace if you asked any Yankees fan right now who do you want starting Game 1 of the World Series they would put on their Mario Brothers style mustache and tell you Cortes is their guy.
The Top Prospects Updated catcher who could fetch the Blue Jays much needed starting pitching in return. The recent 10-12 week injury suffered by Jean Segura seems to be another opportunity for Philadelphia rookie Bryson Stott to emerge. Let’s see what he does with the opportunity this time.
zone expertly and has dominant on base percentage numbers. While Henderson is hitting a cool .310 as a 21 year old at Double-AA he has walked 40 times alongside 32 strikeouts. His on base percentage is a dominant .454 and his OPS is likewise over 1.00. And it isn’t just the on base percentage driving that OPS, as Gunnar has slugged .559 year to date. These are two dominant young shortstops who have to be viewed as candidates to make their teams out of spring training 2023. Which means you have to add them to your dynasty team right now. Remember that dynasty leagues are a kill or be
killed exercise. You either strike first or you sit back and watch these talents perform for others. Yes, Adley Rutschman suffered a triceps injury that delayed his major league start until the last week in May. But he is up now and he makes it very easy for me to cut bait on Joey Bart who has not fulfilled his promise as a slugging young catcher. Gabriel Moreno with Toronto only adds to the glut of good young catchers up in Toronto. Still, his .331 batting average seems to be crying out to play for someone and Alejandro Kirk is emerging as a young
The MLB draft is an event that becomes a rabbit hole which traps too many fantasy owners. It sure did it again in my dynasty league, where owners became enamored with Druw Jones and Elijiah Greene. For reasons I can’t understand. Owners in my dynasty league went out and picked up amateur outfielders in April, when they won’t be drafted until July, probably won’t sign until August and probably will be shut down before the Arizona Fall League. I let the MLB draft pass me by in most years, but in 2021 I did not. I saw a unique write up on catcher Henry Davis and I decided to draft him last August. I saw a bat described as the best in college. It was said he would be the first to the pros. And the computerized calls of balls and strikes will help him.

OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE Other than the lore surrounding it, we know very little about the place called Heaven. There is a wealth of conflicting beliefs regarding it. Most agree that the souls of the righteous are saved and their eternal reward is dwelling as saints with God and the Heavenly Host of angels in Heaven. Many who believe in an afterlife believe that Heaven is the firmament above Creation. The apocryphal Book of Enoch describes Heaven as having seven realms. Each realm has its unique character and appearance. The seven heavens are Shamain, Raquia, Sagun, Machen, Mathey, Zebul, and Araboth. The First Heaven Shamain is connected to Earth and exists in both the spiritual and material planes. With a common border to Earth, Shamain most closely resembles the tangible world and has a natural atmosphere and surface water. It is ruled by the Archangel Gabriel. The Second Heaven Raquia contains a prison chamber which detains fallen angels who are not residing in hell but are also awaiting the final Judgment

for their eternal condemnation. It is ruled by the Archangel Raphael. Sagun is the Third Heaven and is unique in that it is divided into two very different areas. Its northern lands are filled with icy, jagged mountains and it touches upon the realm of hell. In contrast, the southern area of Sagun is a lush, fertile paradise.

The Seven Heavens
The Fourth Heaven is named Machen. The Archangel Michael rules over this region. The Apocalypse of St. Paul tells us that the actual Garden of Eden is located here, flourishing after its removal from earth. Machen is verdant and fertile and a favorite spot of the angels. The Fifth Heaven is named Mathey, and in some traditions
this is where God resides. The Creator holds court with His ministering angels who eternally sing hosannas and hymns in the southern hall of the region. Lore has it that the very different northern boundaries are the home of the exiled Samael, who lives in an expansive corona of fire and smoke with no firm ground above or below his domain. The Watchers, a group
of fallen angels, are kept bound in this same void until their final judgment. The Sixth Heaven called Zebul, has no single Archangel as its ruler. Seven powerful Cherubs reside here, as do legions of other angels who specialize in the study of every science and art form in existence. They mark the time and breadth of the universe from here, and consider their home a font of celestial knowledge. The Seventh Heaven is called Araboth and, in some conflicting traditions, is ruled by the Archangel Samael. Other traditions maintain that this is where God dwells. Most of the Heavenly Host reside here, and the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, (the top three tiers in the Nine Choirs of Angels) choose this area of Heaven almost exclusively as their own. These concepts of the seven realms of heaven are from the apocryphal writings of the prophet Enoch. There are numerous other conflicting traditions and perceptions of heaven which comprise celestial lore.

Help Save Our Northport VA Hospital
VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. The VA’s Asset and Infrastructure Review Commission proposal reported that most of the current care provided by the Northport VA Medical Center, Long Island’s only hospital dedicated to serving approximately 130,000 Veterans in Nassau and Suffolk counties. The recommended report discontinues the emergency department and relocation of these services to area hospitals. This will eliminate the ability to admit inpatients thus closing the hospital. Presently there are approximately 50,000 patients who are served by the Northport Medical Center hospital. Presently they are enlarging the parking lot due to the large number of out-patients seeking service at the hospital each day. Closing the Northport VA hospital reminds me of the closing of the mental hospitals. The patients were sent home. Many will ended up on the streets. With the VA hospital closing the veterans suffering
from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) will have no place to go. They will also lose the the help from the hospital’s chaplains. The strangest part of this action is that the VA budget for 2023 is increased by 18.8% over this year’s budget. In addition, President Biden identified supporting Veterans as a key priority. It is our duty as veterans on Long Island to fight to keep the VA hospital open. There are several different ways to accomplish this battle. 1. If you have not enrolled as a patient at the hospital, do so even if it’s just to obtain you medicines at a lower rate. 2. Join one of the larger veteran’s organizations such as the American Legion, the veterans of Foreign Wars, or the AmVets. 3. Have your Veteran’s organization send letters to the national Senators and Congress to keep the hospital open. Tell

them how the veterans on Long Island need and use the hospital. 4. Write a personal letter to your national Senator and Congress telling them to keep the hospital open. Even if you do not use the VA hospital or the clinics you need
to join in this action to support our comrades that are in need of the hospital. They are not going to go to a local hospital or doctor for their treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and be listed as suffering from a mental disorder on their records. In addition, the local

Voluntary Administrator vs. Executor
What is the difference between a Voluntary Administrator and an Executor or Administrator of an estate?
Not all estates require a full probate or ad m i n i s t r at ion proceeding. When someone passes away with a Will, that Will is probated in Surrogate’s Court. When someone passes away without a Will, the process is similar but called an Administration. In the latter, assets pass according to the strict intestacy statute. The small estate, also known as a voluntary administration, is a simplified Surrogate’s Court procedure. This small estate proceeding is available if the decedent passed away with $50,000 or less in personal property, with or without a Will. The voluntary administration proceeding cannot be used if the decedent died owning real property in their sole name. The person who files
the “Affidavit of Voluntary Administration” requests to be appointed as Voluntary Administrator. This is either the nominated executor in the decedent’s Will or the closest living relative if the decedent died without a Will. The person filing the Affidavit is asking the Court to let them collect the assets of the decedent, pay any debts, and distribute the property to people who have a legal right to inherit. Their role is exactly that of an Executor or Administrator. A voluntary administration is less complex than a full probate or administration proceeding and the filing fee is only $1. Consent is not needed from the distributees of the decedent’s estate. The Court merely provides the distributees with notice of the proceeding. This saves time and avoids potential
conflict. The voluntary administration does have drawbacks. The decedent’s assets must be known at the assets and provided
to the court. The voluntary administrator only has authority to collect the specific assets listed on the affidavit. An Administrator or Executor in a full proceeding has broad

authority to collect all assets of the decedent. If you are uncertain about the assets of the estate, it may be wise to proceed with a full probate or administration proceeding. Otherwise, if there are additional assets discovered, the administrator has to go back to the court. While the Voluntary Administration proceeding is simple, it is always a good idea to consult with an experienced Trust and Estate’s attorney to ensure that it is the best way to proceed. OBITUARY
A Purpose Driven Life
Roy W. Richey passed away peacefully on April 27, 2022 at Sentara Hospital in Woodbridge, VA. Roy would have been 87 years old on July 30, 2022. Roy was born in Brooklyn, NY to Clair and Althea Richey. His childhood summers were spent with his grandparents in Lock Haven, PA. At the age of 10, he met his best friend and future wife, Janet Welch. Some of his fondest memories were attending movies and enjoying ice cream with Janet and his Lock Haven friends. On August 2, 1958, he and Janet were married at the Dunnstown United Methodist Church. After a brief time teaching high school and coaching track and field, Roy joined his father’s electrical contracting business. Roy would often say that the years working alongside his father were some the most memorable times of his career. Roy suffered from
childhood asthma, but eventually outgrew it and became an avid runner. He lettered in track and field at Sewanhaka High School and later at Adelphi College. He went on to run numerous marathons including the New York City and the USMC in Washington D.C. His happiest runs were with family and friends at Sunken Meadow Park, Long Island. Sadly, the love of his life, Janet, became ill with a Parkinson’s like disease. Roy continued his lifelong devotion to Janet by lovingly caring for her for 15 years, until she succumbed. He was deeply saddened but continued to make the best of God’s grace. Roy was never one to sit and let life come to him. He filled everyday with purpose. He earnestly researched the Richey family lineage to discover his greatgreat grandfather Robert Richie was a private serving in the Revolutionary War.

At the age of 83, he and his daughter, Kelly, traveled to Scotland to further research Robert Richie’s life. Always ready to lend a hand, he held the titles of Smithtown Booster Club Chairman, Hauppauge Methodist Church Lay Leader, President of Elmont Electric Inc., Eagle Scout, NECA President, Westminster of Lake Ridge Treasurer, and Spiritual
Life Chairman. Roy was passionate about every position he held, but his greatest passion in life was being a loving husband and father. He is survived by his daughter Kelly; son Chris and wife Jeannine; son Craig and wife Karen; son Steven and wife Heidi; grandchildren Christopher and wife Kathryn, Sean and wife Samantha, Emily and
husband Sean, Gabriella, Anneliese, Garrett, Hailey and Nathan; and great grandchildren, Carter, Declan, Sabrina and Jack. Residents, friends and family are invited to Westminster at Lake Ride, VA to celebrate Roy’s life on June 3, 2022 at 11:00 in the Potomac Room. Join us for refreshments immediately following the service. Roy will be interred at Dunnstown Methodist Church alongside his wife, Janet, in Lock Haven, PA.
