Fire News Raises Funds for Charity
In May, Fire News held a charitable awards event donating a total of $50,000 to five fire related charities. The commitment to donate the funds was made by Fire News publisher Frank C. Trotta when the Fire News 9/11 20 th Anniversary Issue was released last fall. Publisher Frank C. Trotta and Chief Operating Officer Tim Edwards presented $10,000 checks to the charities, noting that the “Five charities continue to contribute in a positive way to families affected by the devasting effects of 9/11”. The charities chosen serve both Suffolk and Nassau County with many doing work nationally. They include The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund, Lt. Joseph P. DiBernardo Foundation, The Ray Pfeifer Foundation, Firefighter Cancer Support Network – NY Chapter and The FealGood Foundation. The afternoon event was well-attended by chiefs and members from all around Long Island, state and local government officials and
others. It was highlighted by the Ceremonial Color Guard provided by the Fire Chiefs Council of Suffolk County and former FDNY Chief of Department Tom Richardson as the key note speaker. Additional speakers included Legislator Tom Donnelly, Senator John Brooks, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Liason for FDNY 9/11 Ceremonial Unit Ray McGuire and Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy. “I’d like to thank the Fire News editorial and sales staff for their round-the-clock work producing the 9/11 20 th Anniversary issue, our photographers who donated their images and our
advertisers who supported the issue,” said Trotta. Thank you to the South County Ambulance Company for generously providing their facilities, hospitality and to all of their members that volunteered to help.

Councilman Foley and Medford VFW Post 2937 Have New Directional Signs Installed on Long Island Avenue On June 7, Councilman Neil Foley met with members of the VFW Medford Post 2937 as the Town of Brookhaven’s Highway Department installed two directional signs on Long Island Avenue in Medford. The post members contacted the Highway Department’s Traffic Safety Division and Councilman Foley’s office and requested the signs which were created by the Highway Department’s in-house sign shop. Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization which promotes safe technology and media for children through its education and advocacy to schools and families, has recognized South Street Elementary School in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District as a Common Sense School for its commitment to teaching digital citizenship. While learning ways in which technology can be used to assist them as learners, South Street Elementary School students learned their role as digital citizens through lessons taught by library media teacher Mrs. Norman. Through various assignments and activities, students learned that when
they log onto a computer and other technology devices, they leave a digital footprint. They also learned that the internet is vast and that a person does not always know who is on the other side of the screen. “We applaud the faculty and staff of South Street Elementary School for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” Vice President of Education Programs at Common Sense Education Kelly Mendoza said. “South Street Elementary School deserves high praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate in society at large.”

William Floyd High School Medical Assisting Takes First in Northwell’s Spark! Challenge
William Floyd High School students enrolled in the Medical Assisting Academy recently took first place in Northwell Health’s Spark! Challenge video competition for their unique video highlighting the hard work of emergency medical technicians or EMTs. The video, made using Lego toys and complete with sound effects, shows EMTs responding to a motor vehicle accident and ends with the tagline, “EMTs, like doctors, but at 70 mph!” The team, consisting of students Tara DiMaio, Sarah Duenzl, Madison Hoffman and Joshua Sutherland, under the direction of teacher Jason McKay, won $3,000 for the Medical Assisting program which will be used for future opportunities for students. This year’s Spark! Challenge competition had approximately 60 schools creating careerthemed posters and 90-second promotional videos, judged by a team of professionals for most creative and impactful. Winners were announced during a full-day ceremony with interactive and collaborative opportunities built into the schedule. Since 2014, Northwell has opened its clinical and nonclinical facilities to students each fall, allowing them to observe

employees from such diverse fields. Then in the spring, the students present what they have learned to Northwell’s senior leadership based on the theme assigned by Northwell. Created and facilitated by Northwell’s workforce readiness team, the Spark! Challenge got off to a modest start with 300 students in its first year. To date, the event has introduced more than 7,000 students in the New York City and Long Island area to the array of careers available in healthcare.

The William Floyd High School CTE program is thriving and in full swing offering eight CTE program academies in a variety
of interest areas, as well as five CTE Pathways in business and technology. Graduation pathways include Accounting, Architecture, Business Management, Engineering, and Microsoft Office Specialist. CTE academy offerings include Automotive, Barbering, Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Home Design & Carpentry (with electrical and plumbing), Medical Assisting, along with the additions of two new CTE courses for next school year – Marine & Motorsports and Certified Personal Trainer & Nutritionist. William Floyd High School CTE is helping to build the skills necessary for students to be career and college ready and have the extra skills and know-how they can take with them throughout their lives.
Bellport High School students unveiled projects aimed at making positive change in their school and community as part of the school’s Civics Day event on June 3. They presented to their peers, principals and distinguished guests, including Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. Each presentation was led by a team of students who explained the issue they had researched, the origin of the issue and their plan for action. Topics included providing expanded access to filtered water for students at school, allowing seniors to beautify the school by decorating parking spots and adding sidewalks to South Country Road. Following each
presentation, students discussed the implications of the issue and alternative solutions. The high schoolers worked on their projects as part of the school’s civic readiness program, an all-encompassing program that teaches students how to apply civic knowledge, skills and mindsets to make positive impacts in their school, community and the world. It also aims to strengthen relationships with community partners and civic leaders. South Country is one of five schools in Suffolk County designated as a Seal of Civic Readiness Pilot School by the New York State Education Department.

The 2022 legislative session gaveled to a close in Albany at 8:15 Saturday morning, having begun early the day before. Hundreds of bills were passed at the last minute in a frenzy of activity, yet little was accomplished to make our state more affordable, fight crime, or curb the inflation that is threatening families across the state. The Republican Conference put forth many bills for real change, yet we were voted down by the Progressive Democrats time and again. On too many occasions, they maneuvered to serve their own interests rather than the public’s. One party rule in the Capitol has had terrible ramifications for public
safety as a crime wave continues thanks to their soft-on-crime agenda. More than 300,000 people fled the high taxes and fees of the “Vampire State,” yet our proposals to live within our means were rejected. While many are living paycheck to paycheck, Governor Hochul saw fit to stick us with an unprecedented $850 million public bill for a new football stadium in Buffalo that will line the pockets of her husband. With the price of gas skyrocketing, illegal immigration flooding our communities, and the murder rate soaring in cities from one end of our state to the other, the record of the Progressive left is one of complete failure. Without any concern for the hard-working people of our state,
that people are moving there in droves leaving the rest of us to pick up the bloated tab. Thankfully, the voters will have the opportunity to put in the last word come November. The tax-and spend governor is up for reelection,
as are her cohorts in the senate and assembly. I urge all voters to carefully consider what’s going on in our once proud state and act accordingly. Now, more than ever, the future of New York depends on it.

When it comes to setting records on the fields of Intercollegiate Lacrosse and earning accolades for outstanding achievements, William Floyd 2018 Alumnus and St. Joseph’s College 2022 graduate, Andrew Brust, has certainly made the grade - and then some. After graduating from William Floyd High School in 2018 where he was star goal tender on the field and excelled in the classroom, Brust entered St. Joseph’s College where he played goalie for the Golden Eagles. It was here that Brust continued blazing a trail and setting records in Intercollegiate Lacrosse. Brust tended goal last month in the prestigious National North/ South All-Star Game (where college seniors from across the United States are white glove picked to participate), in Providence, Rhode Island, and Brust once again impressed both his own team’s and opposing coaches. He was nominated for, and awarded AllAmerican honors by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association, (USILA), for the second consecutive year; this past April posting a career and conference best with 27 saves in a game against Kean University. On the heels of receiving All-American, the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association awarded Brust with the prestigious All-Eastern College Athlete Conference honors. Brust was named Skyline Conference Defensive Player of the Year on May 9th, and after he finished 2nd in the Conference in save percentage, 3rd in saves-per-game, and 4th in total saves and goals-against average.

Brust is humble and grounded during his interview as he talks about his accomplishments and mapping out his future. He’s keeping his “options open” about pursuing graduate school, and is already executing his newly received degree in Business Administration with a position in American Dream Title Company. Reflecting on his collegiate lacrosse career, it’s that ‘27- save’ game against Kean College that the Golden Eagles goalie cites without hesitation. Brust became the first goalie in the program’s history to score a goal in a 14-8 win at Sage University for St. Joseph’s in March. Brust’s coaches attest to his sportsmanship, competitive spirit, and character on and off the field. St. Joseph’s Lacrosse Coach, Tom Rotanz, told South Shore Press, “In my 38 years of coaching and 50 years playing and coaching Lacrosse, Andrew is one of my Top 5 goalies that I had the pleasure of coaching, and that includes coaching the 2012 USA U-19
World Champs, and playing with numerous World Team goalies.” Speaking to Brust’s game, Rotanz added, “His leadership on the field is second to none! I compared Andrew with Superman - off the field he is Clark Kent (quiet and reserved), and on the field, opposing coaches called him Superman . . . the best goalie that they have seen in years. . .” Brust has a high regard for his collegiate coach, too: “Coach Rotanz is a really great guy, and he sets you up so you will work to a higher standard,” Brust noted. “He’s a great coach, but he’s also a great person to be around. He knows how to keep practice upbeat and light with stories he knows, but he also knows how to get serious when we needed to. It was an honor, “ Brust said, “to have been coached by someone as accomplished as him.” It was Brust’s older brother, Eric, and William Floyd High School Lacrosse Coach Desmond Megna, who groomed Andrew in Varsity Lacrosse and prepared him for Intercollegiate sportsmanship.
“My brother and I were very close growing up,” Brust recounts. “When I was in Grade 9, Eric and his friends would really help me out.” The Brust Brothers remained close after high school where Andrew points to his brother as among his role models: “Then a couple of years ago when Eric had a bad car accident, I saw how he bounced back, and he was watching games and rooting for me.” Brust credits Floyd’s Coach Megna for his athletic successes as well: “Coach Megna was my original coach who put me in as goalie. He had me work with the older kids so he really propelled me,” Brust explained. Meanwhile, Floyd’s Megna offered Brust an open door policy to return to his alma mater to coach Lacrosse. “Andrew’s a kid that we’ll be able to point to for the next couple of years. He’s young enough that when he comes to our practices the kids remember him. And” Megna adds, “he’s St. Joe’s one and only two-time All-American Player of the Year. Depending on when he’s available, Andrew still comes down to work with the goalies in the off-season, and the kids love him.” As for Brust, he offers advice to aspiring Lacrosse athletes: “Definitely stay with the game. Both the game and school are majorly important. I received a great academic scholarship at St. Joseph’s College, so I graduated with no debt. Lacrosse-wise, I would watch college Lacrosse when I was in high school, and I modeled my game after those players. The advice I would give is to practice, but don’t take it too seriously, and just have fun.”

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN “Suffolk police have responded to 16 threats of violence against schools since a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers in an Uvalde, Texas elementary school,” Newsday recently reported. “The threats in Suffolk have resulted in the arrest of four students in the past two weeks,” said the article. “Students have been arrested for making threats against schools in Bellport, Westhampton Beach and Riverhead.” The headline of a Suffolk Times story: “Greenport school transforms into battleground for mass casualty training exercise.” It told of how “first responders from across the East End gathered at Greenport High School” for the exercise. “Part of the training involved police working to neutralize the shooter inside the school while the second part of the training dealt with the victims and patients.” Suffolk County is not immune from what is going on—although, thank heavens, there have been no mass shootings in Suffolk. Will our luck continue in a county with a population larger than dozen states? The New York Times covered the front page of its Sunday Review section last month with a list, beginning with the Uvalde massacre

in May and its 21 victims, and continuing with prior mass killings this year and the last several years. They included the racist slaughter in Buffalo, also in May, that left 10 dead; the mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado last year in which 10 were killed; the mass shooting in Atlanta also in 2021 leaving eight dead; and on and on. In each of the 15 bloodbaths, with the number of people killed cited, The Times pointed out that “the gunman was able to obtain the weapon” or “weapons legally.” According to the “American Gun Facts” website: “America has more guns than any other nation in the world and that number continues to grow each year….There are estimated to be over 400 million guns in the United States between police, the military, and American civilians. Over 393 million—over 98%—of those guns are in civilian hands, the equivalent of 120 firearms per 100 citizens. Last week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul signed into law 10 gun control measures passed by the State Legislature that included one raising the age required to buy or possess a semiautomatic rifle from 18 to 21. “We cannot keep living like this,” she said. “This is a moral moment for the people of New York but also the rest of the nation.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said after a gunman with an assault weapon killed 22 people in Nova Scotia in 2020, the largest mass shooting in Canada. He has long been endeavoring to ban the sale of assault weapons in Canada. “You don’t need an AR-15 to bring down a deer,” he said. “These weapons were designed for one purpose, and one purpose only, to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada.” And there is no use and no place for such weapons in the United States.
“In many states it is easier to own a gun than a dog. That is absurd,” was the sub-head of an article in the British publication, The Economist, last month. It pointed out that the “motives for mass murder vary” but “what these horrors have in common, though, is the murder weapons. Guns are simple, reliable tools for killing.” The weapon used by the 18-year-old killer in the Uvalde slayings was a “military-style assault rifle with high-capacity magazines— allowing him to keep shooting until someone shot him. That most of his victims were children makes the crime unusually horrific. But it resembles the countless other

CBS News ran a story last week about how “weapons like the AR-style guns used in the mass shootings are often marketed on social media through posts tailored to appeal to young adults and teens.” The CBS piece quoted Josh Sugarmann, executive director of the gun control group Violence Policy Center, as saying: “What you are seeing is the industry, in marketing to these kids, is priming youth for the day they turn 18 and go out and buy their first assault rifle.” There should be a total ban nationally on the sale of assault weapons, and more.

In baseball certain numbers just fall off the tongue with ease. Joe D’s 56 game hitting streak, Ted Williams .406, and for years it was Roger Maris and 61. In fact, Billy Crystal had a movie made about his historic home run chase and named it simply 61*. Even before that Ruth and his 60 lasted for decades as iconic as any other record. But, somewhere in the 90’s numbers got lost. Sure, we know that McGwire and Sosa chased and caught Rogers’ record, but most fans without help from google couldn’t tell you what number they eventually landed on. It was 66 for Sosa and 70 for Big Mac. Even Barry Bonds, who holds the record with 73 doesn’t quite have the same tune as Maris and 61. Many will point out steroids, and that has to have an impact, but for many it’s just not numbers that stick to the brain. Aaron Judge though has a chance to chase one of those iconic numbers. Roger Maris
still holds the American League single season home run lead with that famous 61. Judge, as of this writing, is on pace for 65 home runs. With the steroid cloud still lingering and still stinging for many, Judge can take over this summer for the new chase for 61. Aaron Judge represents what many want in a true competitor to take down the record. First, he is a Yankee. Don’t undersell that point. When Maris chased down Ruth, it was Mantle who everyone wanted to win, and that was because he was a “real Yankee”, but even those who were on Mickey’s bandwagon eventually were happy that the record was kept in the same franchise. Judge would represent taking over a record and doing it in pinstripes. That is something special. Judge also checks many of the boxes for fans. He is a known home run hitter, he is doing this without the help of steroids, he is also doing this

There is an old saying in fantasy sports, “I like to win my league under the tent”. The old adage takes the position that you don’t need to make trades to win your league that year. If you do a very good job at the draft table, establish the right mix of waiver pickups, spot the changing and emerging talents in the game and make smart decisions during the season, you won’t need to make trades to bring home the title. Playing fantasy baseball since 1989 I have seen it done with smart trades and I have seen it done without trades at all. There is merit to both approaches and we can jump into some examples from this current season to help illustrate. Trading activity goes on all season in a fantasy baseball league but it is intense in late July/early August. Typically, most leagues have a trade deadline in place somewhere in early to mid-August. There can be a frenzied build up to the trading deadline every year and many look back and declare they won their league due to the deadline deals. And just as many teams decide that they came in 2nd place and lost the title in their league

for a first place team. These are the types of subplots that can capture not only baseball fans, but Americans everywhere. Sadly, it probably won’t be like

due to the late trading they did at their deadline. Dynasty leagues are of course a little different, as it starts with protecting a certain number of players and going from there to a draft to round out your rosters. Let’s look at the draft in my dynasty league. The #1 draft pick in my dynasty league was Houston SS Jeremy Pena and it surprised a number of teams in my dynasty league. It should not have. Pena had climbed up to the #16 prospect overall in Baseball Prospectus. He was given a golden opportunity to replace a departing All-Star free agent in Carlos Correa. He was also solidly built on a 6-foot-3 inch frame with a solid base of athleticism, ran the bases well and showed solid power in his Triple AAA numbers. Corey Knebel was perhaps the safest pick in the first round of our draft as he had a solid opportunity to close for Philadelphia but also had an extensive history of injuries. Still, he was signed to a large contract and seemed to be the choice of the GM to be the closer. Manager Joe Girardi however was a little bit hesitant to name Knebel his closer. Well Joe got fired quickly
we are all hoping to be cheering in the summer. Cheering for one Yankee to take down another, while giving some validation back to that iconic number.

I know that I think that way every time I watch Moneyball and I watch Brad Pitt tussling with Philip Seymour Goffman’s portrayal of Art Howe. One name that didn’t get drafted in our late March draft was Taylor Ward. Though Ward is currently on the IL, he has done a remarkable Mike Trout impression. As you know I wrote about his 2022
season several weeks back. His batted ball data is off of the charts excellent. And it is little surprise that the current 2nd place team in our dynasty league took a waiver pick flyer on him. An interesting 2022 season is being had by Martin Perez of Texas. In his 11th season of a journeyman career compiling a 4.54 career ERA and a 1.45 WHIP. Perez is coming off of 9 consecutive quality starts with a 1.56 ERA. Who should take a flyer on Martin Perez? If you are in a
league which does FAAB bidding, the contenders should bid heavily for Perez. If you award free agents based on reverse order of finish, he probably fell to a lower placed team. Perez is 31, and his numbers are out of sorts with the rest of his career. However, if you look closer at his STATCAST data, Perez has batters swinging at the highest percentage of pitches outside of the strike zone in his career. That isn’t like doing Yoga or Pilates in the off season or lifting weights on a new machine and adding 2 miles per hour to your fastball. It isn’t like adding a new pitch to your repertoire. By all appearances, it would seem he has made a change to his delivery and the batters are chasing these bad pitches. To me this is going to end with the batters making an adjustment and Perez stats will revert to his previous mean. If you plucked Perez on waivers, you want to market that 1.56 ERA. And if you are an inexperienced owner you might buy into the 1.56 ERA. But owners who are psychologically disciplined to not chase all of the trends might not bid as much for Perez. You will learn a lot about the owners who will pay a lot for Perez in your league.

An Overview of the Real Estate Closing Process
Why does New York State require a real estate attorney at closing?
Most states do not require an attorney to handle real estate transactions. However, real estate agents and brokers cannot legally draft or review sales contracts. It is customary in New York that separate attorneys represent the Seller and Buyer.
What if a Buyer does not want to hire an attorney, can they still buy a property?
Yes, but it is extremely risky. The Buyer must sign legally binding documents as part of the transaction, including the Contract of Sale. It is even more complicated if Buyer obtains a mortgage. The Buyer’s attorney reviews and revises the proposed Contract of Sale to protect Buyer’s interests. Mistakes can lead to the Buyer losing their down payment, which the Buyer pays when the contract is signed. The down payment is a significant amount of money - ten percent of the purchase price.
The Buyer’s attorney also orders the title search and an updated survey. This ensures that the property has no liens or disputes over ownership, including easements and boundary issues. Real estate attorneys perform all necessary due diligence: reviewing the home inspection report, property zoning information, and recommendations for further testing.

The Seller’s attorney also prepares the deed and necessary transfer documents and affidavits necessary to sell the property.
Why can’t a single attorney
represent both Buyer and Seller?
Separate attorneys ensure impartial representation for each side, avoiding conflicts of interest. In certain circumstances, such as an inter-family transaction, one attorney could represent both parties. But even in such a case, the Buyer and Seller must sign a
waiver of conflict consenting to dual representation.
Do both sides’ attorneys attend the closing?
Yes, both Buyer and Seller and their respective attorneys attend the closing. Each attorney goes over the closing documents with their clients. The title company’s

Generally, it is best to budget at least two hours for a closing, especially if a mortgage is involved. Whenever there is a loan, there are more documents to be signed by Buyer. Closings without a mortgage are usually completed within one hour and half hours. VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. On June 14th we celebrate two (2) very important events, Flag Day and the origin of the U.S. Army. Both of these originated back in 1775, during the American Revolution. At the start of the American Revolution in 1775 our colonists fought under different independent flags. In June 1775, the Second Continental Congress met to create the Continental Army. This led to the creation of what was the first “American Flag,” the Continental colors. That flag was comprised of 13 red and white alternating stripes and a Union jack in the corner. George Washington realized that this flag was too similar to the British and therefore was not a great confidence builder for the revolutionary efforts, so he turned his efforts on creating a new flag. On June 14, 1777, less than a year after Betsy Ross (who assisted in the
war by repairing uniforms and sewing tent) had received the order from General George Washington to make the first flag, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating: “Resolved, that flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new Constellation.” The United States Army (USA) Was formed originally as the Continental Army June 14, 1775 to fight the American Revolutionary War (1775– 1783). After the Revolutionary War, the Congress of the Confederation created the United States Army on 3 June 1784 to replace the disbanded Continental Army. The United States Army considers itself to be a continuation of the Continental Army, and thus considers its institutional

inception to be the origin of that armed force in 1775. It is the oldest and most senior branch of the U.S. military. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. On August 3, 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress. However, it is not an official federal holiday.
The “Star-Spangled Banner” America’s national anthem since 1931, was taken from a poem written by Francis Scott Key after he witnessed the Battle of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. • Flying the flag upside down is not intended as an act of protest. According to the Flag Code, it is an official distress signal.
• The Flag Code stipulates that the Stars and Stripes should not be used as apparel, bedding or drapery. • The practice of draping coffins in the American Flag is not reserved for military veterans and government officials. Any burial may incorporate this tradition. • Etiquette calls for American flags to be illuminated by sunlight or another light source while on display • When the flags are taken down from their poles, care must be taken to keep them from touching the ground. • When the flags get old and need replacement those flags should be turned in to a veteran’s organization where they can be properly disposed of. Hurricane Prep, Part II – The Boat

We wrote a couple of weeks back about the increasingly more dangerous season ahead. In addition to the forecast update, it was largely about what you and your family should do (like never stay on the boat nor drive through running water.) What about the boat? Tis the season of heavy weather. This column is about that.
Let Me Say It Again…
Never stay on the boat. I know. There are old timers that swear by it. “I’ve saved my boat every time when others were lost.” With absolute certainty, it is simply because the winds – and seas – never exceeded the operational capacity of the engines. But when they do, you will be lost with the boat. The boat is just money. You are someone. If you care about the people who care about you, read on – and leave the boat behind while you take your loved ones to high ground.
The Spider Web of Lines
If you can’t get the boat out of the water and on to “the hard”, then you are compelled to protect her in her natural element – the water. But the sea presents forces magnified beyond the speed of the wind – it is the momentum of the wind-driven seas and the tidal surge. The storm tide is added to the astronomical tides. And when those waves hit something solid, they generate force
dozens of times more powerful than wind of the same speed. Sandy generated a storm surge of 14 feet. Andrew generated a storm tide of 17 feet. Camille in 1969? 24 feet. Dorian made the Bahamas look like Hiroshima…

What is common to all these configurations is lots of lines and long expanses of them. In two of them, you can also see that multiple anchors are used as well. The longer lines are there to address the tidal surge. The additional lines are there for back-up. Losing one line to stress doesn’t completely undo everything you’ve done.
Chafe Guards
Without doubt, you will need chafe guards of some kind since the storm will put extreme stresses on the lines where they are wrapped around the cleats and chocks. Your ground tackle too will need additional chafe protection. Think of the storm as putting a summer’s worth of stress on your lines – for every hour of ‘blow.’ If you go through a set of lines every two summers, they will never withstand a half-day of a serious ‘blow.’ And that is assuming that they are new. What to use? The universal winner-take-all is old garden hose. Lay the line through a length of hose and lay that through the chock or along the toe rail where your line

crosses the gunwale on its way to a cleat on the dock. In a pinch, duct tape (a TON of it) works really well. And it is more pliable than garden hose. For the aficionados, they will hate it because it looks like hell – but it works. BTW, while you can (now!), be sure that the cleats on the boat and on the dock are through-bolted with a backing plate. If not, they will become high-speed guided missiles as they fly out of their bedding under strain. And the boat will be free… No garden hose? Improvise. Leather straps. Rags. Anything helps, just some things help more than others.
Cut Your Windage
Do whatever you can to lower
the boat’s profile to the wind. Take down the bimini cover and lash it. If you can’t, open the windows. Take down the antennas. Even that little bit of additional windage can tip the balance. Using his great military acumen, with Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, and all the warrior archangels under his command, Michael leads the Heavenly Host against Satan’s troops and returns the rebels back into the exile of hell.
