Greater MB Chamber of Commerce Hosts Deputy Supervisor Dan Panico

Brookhaven Town Deputy Supervisor and Sixth District Councilman, Dan Panico, addressed merchants and resident property-owners at the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce meeting last week. On tap for discussion was the Mastic Beach Downtown Revitalization project, and an array of topics those in attendance expressed concerns about. Chamber of Commerce Vice President, Matthew Towle, noted that the purpose for discussion on the Revitalization Project was to provide communication between merchants, residents, and Brookhaven Town Officials. While the councilman addressed questions on various issues, topping the discussion was the pending Downtown Revitalization Project where Panico offered comprehensive responses to a wide array of pre-written questions that those in attendance submitted ahead of his arrival to the meeting. Panico told listeners at the meeting that Beechwood was selected by the Brookhaven Town Board pursuant to an RFP (Request for Proposal), as the master developer to oversee the revitalization of downtown Mastic Beach. “Beechwood is a successful

developer across Long Island and across the country,” Panico said, pointing out that “Brookhaven Town has had one meeting with Beechwood so far,” and later pointed out that a second meeting between the Town and Beechwood was scheduled for Monday, May 2. When asked about the overall plans for the revitalization, Panico responded, “The shortest answer is that there are no specifics - we’re waiting for Beechwood to come forward with plans...” Key to any development in the area, Panico said, is implementation of a sewer district. He said the sewage treatment plant for the Forge River Sewer District will be sited on the west side of the Mastic Fire Department substation and added that the sewer district will continue along the east side of Mastic Road and William Floyd Parkway to Surrey Circle. “This is all coming together at the same time,” Panico said. “No matter what you zone an area, whether its J-6 or J-4, it’s not going to matter if you don’t have the sanitary capacity under the Suffolk County health code, which is what a sewer district enables us to do.” Panico said funding is not currently included to bring sewer lines down to the environmentally sensitive Osprey Point which falls into Phase 3 of the plan. “We

want to see phases 3 and 4 done,” Panico said, “and we’re looking for funding from Lee Zeldin and other sources to defray hookup costs for residents.” Funding for phases 3 and 4 are anticipated to cost “upwards of $40 million.” Panico said an MOU, (Memo of Understanding), has not yet been drafted between Brookhaven Town and Beechwood. While the sewage treatment plant is under construction, Panico addressed a question about the timeline for completion: “I can give no firm timeline, but I expect after the MOU is signed and ratified with the Town Board, we will begin looking to assemble parcels.” As the process evolves, however, meetings will be scheduled between the community, the Town and Beechwood to unveil and discuss proposals. Panico is suggesting holding meetings for the community at William Floyd High School in order to accommodate the highly anticipated interest in the revitalization plans. “I think everyone wants to see a downtown you can be proud of - a downtown that is vibrant, with not so much vacancy, where people are walking

up and down Mastic Road,” Panico said. “No one can turn back the pages of Mastic Beach,” he said, adding, “Time has marched on, living in the past does nothing for anyone. This needs to happen. People can talk about it forever, or they can do something, and I’m committed to making this happen,” a passionate Panico told listeners. Questions were raised about whether Brookhaven Town would condemn properties if owners do not want to sell, to which Panico responded: “It is unknown at the moment. There are no plans to do so, but we are serious about the revitalization,” reiterating that it is unknown at this time whether the Town would proceed with condemnation should a property

owner refuse to sell. Panico said it is likely that Beechwood will be speaking with property owners first, not lessees, about the process. As the downtown revitalization for the community of Mastic Beach moves forward, Panico said he thinks “Beechwood is looking to develop as a whole, and uniformly.” Panico said he wants to see new buildings of high architectural quality, in a community that is conducive to people dining outdoors, outdoor music, in a thriving downtown. “This exists elsewhere, and we endeavor to have this here...” Panico said, adding: “This will be a fully transparent process. Are we going to make everyone happy? Probably not, but we will see a lot of change.”

The office of the Suffolk County Clerk is one of the largest in New York State, and one of the largest revenue producers in Suffolk County. According to statistics reported by County Clerk Judy A. Pascale, the county clerk’s office collected $689 million in revenue and delivered $19 million to Suffolk County’s general fund. The clerk’s office collects revenues including but not limited to the State Education Fund, MTA, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, New York State Commissioner of Education, and the New York State Equalization and Assessment Office.

This, after 16 year incumbent Republican County Clerk Judith A. Pascale was told she would not be receiving her party’s endorsement for re-election to the office When it became public knowledge that Pascale would not be receiving the support of her party for re-election, controversy began surrounding the Republican party. Pascale sought litigation against the GOP for the right to run a primary where Garcia said the matter is undergoing a review by the Suffolk County Board of Elections. In an interview with Garcia last week, the party leader spoke about the decision not to support Pascale. “Based on challenges our party brought forward and the multiple challenges and existence of fraud, this will all be played out in court,” Garcia said. “Mr. Puleo is a professional who runs his office with integrity,” Garcia continued. “He’s a well-respected 50 year member of EMS Fire Services who knows first hand about small business and what the taxpayers deal with, and he’s taken steps to remove beaurocratic barriers and challenges, and he has streamlined the Smithtown Clerk’s Office where it is now more user-friendly,” Garcia said. Asked why the Republican Party did an about face not to endorse Pascale after the incumbent County Clerk said she was assured she had her party’s

“Not so!” countered Pascale during an interview with The South Shore Press last week. “The Suffolk County Clerk’s Office is not closed to the public.” Pascale said at the height of the pandemic people were moving into Suffolk County from New York City and neighboring Nassau County which had title examiners and employees from her office working remotely in 2019, and, Pascale underscored, “the County Clerk’s office is open to examiners by appointment, and the general public walks in here every day. We have people coming in to get copies of their deeds for tax grievances.” After serving 16 years as Chief Deputy County Clerk under then County Clerk Ed Romaine who was term limited before sliding into the County Legislature, Pascale, was appointed by then Republican Governor George Pataki on March 10, 2006. “I was the first woman to be appointed County Clerk by a governor in Suffolk County history, and I underwent a very thorough investigation by the state police that showed I have a clear record, “ Pascale explained. In addition, I received a grade A plus for transparency from the Long Island Press,” Pascale said. Garcia countered Pascale claiming her office is open to the public. “All any resident needs to do is walk into the Riverhead County Center and see the rows and rows of bins left for them to fend for themselves. The incumbent clerk has embraced the liberal policies of Governor Hochul and shut out residents from services they need throughout the county clerk’s office,” Garcia said. “Enough with Pascale’s absentee leadership.” Pascale reiterated her office is open. “This is completely false. Mr. Garcia doesn’t know what he’s talking about. We process a lot of work on a daily basis, much of it from the real estate industry. For those residents who don’t want to enter the building they have the option of doing a drop off in the lobby or can enter the building and meet with myself or my staff.” “Only a liberal career politician would have the arrogance to take the credit for the commitment of the hard working civil service employees that make the operation run, despite the fact that the incumbent treats this taxpayer funded position as a no show job,” Garcia said. “She owes her employees an apology and the people of Suffolk County a full week of work.” Pascale’s response? “This is such an outlandish statement that it doesn’t warrant a response, and Mr. Garcia is grasping at straws now. I don’t share the Governor’s ideology and he knows that.” Pascale credited her employees saying, “This is an award winning office under my leadership, and I credit my committed, hard working employees with the dedication that they display every day.” Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees President, Dan Levler told The South Shore Press: “Judy Pascale has a longstanding relationship with AME, continues to do an excellent job as Suffolk County Clerk, and has always been vocal about the success of the clerk’s office tying directly to the AME members who do that work every day.” Levler said while COVID presented many problems, Pascale ensured that the clerk’s office functioned and excelled during the pandemic. “We have been, and are so proud to stand with Judy Pascale in her pursuit of the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office,” Levler said. Garcia said “There are more than 20 women elected to office by the Republican party throughout Suffolk County and the rules apply to equally when it comes to providing services for the citizens of Suffolk County.” Garcia continued, “Judy Pascale is the only one, Democrat or Republican, to run her office from Florida and the Caribbean. No Countywide official served longer than Pascale.” But Pascale argued, “I am the only female countywide elected official,” and set the record straight stating, “I haven’t been to the Caribbean in five years, and my husband and I purchased a condo in Florida three years ago and have vacationed there five times in one week durations.”

“I find it appalling that the Suffolk County Republican Chairman who is not my opponent is trying to denigrate the only Republican candidate in this primary.” Pascale asserts: I’m running on my record of serving the people of Suffolk County with honesty, integrity and loyalty.” Suffolk County PBA, (Police Benevolent Association) President, Noel DiGerolemo, who confirmed that Pascale “already has the endorsement of not only Suffolk County PBA, but every other police union including the Suffolk County Police Conference,” told The South Shore Press he was “very surprised” Pascale did not receive the GOP nod for re-election. “Judy has been an incredible public figure standing firm to her beliefs, and she has run her office in impeccable fashion,” DiGerolemo said. “She has always been a staunch supporter in Suffolk County and throughout our State,” DiGerolemo continued, “and the strength and leadership exemplified by Judy is something other elected officials should strive to show for themselves.” DiGerolemo spoke in stark contrast and opposition to allegations of fraud and Pascale being labeled a ‘career politician’: “Such assertions are absurd, and I’m disappointed that Chairman Garcia would make such false statements against Clerk Pascale and those who continue to support her. This is disappointing to say the least. And,” DiGerolemo continued, “how Chairman Garcia could possibly attempt to label Judy Pascale as a career politician while he continues to endorse others who have spent more years in office shows the hypocrisy of the party.” Reached for comment at press time, Puleo said he has both Republican and Conservative endorsements and is running an active campaign. “I’m very much looking forward to this election and am very confident I will win the primary,” Puleo said, pointing out he was told Pascale said she wasn’t seeking another term. “I know Judy for 17 or 18 years, and I’m not in the same circles, but she indicated she wasn’t running, then changed her mind and claims she never said she wasn’t going to run. Everyone has the right to do what they want,” Puleo continued, “but I wasn’t expecting to run in a primary. I was expecting to run against a Democrat for election.” Puleo is in his 17th year as Smithtown Clerk with 26 years of private sector experience as a small business owner. “It’s all about delivering constituent service in a short time, and it’s about transparency,” Puleo said. He is a 50 year volunteer with Nesconset Fire Department, where he served as chief, and has been active as a fire commissioner since 1993. He is Smithtown Chamber of Commerce president. Puleo said he is confident he will win the primary. “I’m hoping the New York State Superior Officers, and the Sons of Italy will endorse me, I think every town supervisor is on my side, and I have relationships with our state senators and assembly representatives in Suffolk County, so I have name recognition and I have a lot of support I’m counting on to get me across the line, Puleo said. Meanwhile, Pascale said she expects a decision to be made in her favor at any time, and said she is “waiting by the phone” to hear if she is given the all clear to run a primary for re-election to the position of Suffolk County Clerk.

Mazzarella Joins with Police at Coffee with a Cop

On Wednesday, April 27, Legislator Jim Mazarella joined with Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison and Police Officers from the 7th Precinct at “Coffee With a Cop” at the new Walmart in Yaphank. “It was a fantastic turnout at our Coffee with a Cop event at the new Walmart in Yaphank. We appreciate Walmart for being a great host and special thanks to the 7th precinct for organizing the event.” Stated Legislator Mazzarella. “We were fortunate to have so many residents and special guests stop and say hello. Weik Leads Senators in Call to Cancel Regents Exams

State Senator Alexis Weik (R-C, Sayville) is today leading her Senate colleagues in calling on the state to cancel upcoming Regents exams scheduled for June and August. Senator Weik sent a letter, signed by 18 members of the Senate’s Republican Conference, to state Education Commissioner Betty Rosa and the Chancellor of the education policy-setting Board of Regents, that cited the special challenges in light of the Covid pandemic in preparing for the exams. “Remote learning, social distancing and other precautionary measures have all posed special challenges for student learning, and with regard to their ability to meet

stringent testing and other requirements necessary to achieve a Regents diploma,” the Senators wrote, noting that the Regents have canceled the tests for the past two years, most recently in January. “The increased stress that Covid placed on students,

mounted on top of the challenge of preparing for these make-or-break exams has proven in some cases too heavy a burden for even the most accomplished students. Suspending the Regents exams at this time is the right decision for students’ academic success, health and well-being,” the Senators said. The Education Department has scheduled a total of 10 Regents exams between June 1 and June 24, and nine additional tests on August 16 and 17. In order for students to graduate they need to achieve a satisfactory score on a set number of Regents exams but, until now, the state has waived the testing requirement during the pandemic.

U.S. Congressional and State Senate Lines Hang in the Balance Primary Dates to be Announced

The New York State Court of Appeals has rejected new Congressional maps last week in a decision seen as a setback by some in the democrat party. The state’s highest court ruled in favor of Republican plaintiffs who argued that the Democrat-ruled State Legislature circumvented procedures and protocols established under 2014 reforms and a Constitutional Amendment crafted to rout out political gerrymandering in creating District boundaries. As a result, the Court of Appeals has authorized a special court master to redraw lines to create the new Congressional maps. Voters eight years ago authorized a process whereby lines would be drawn by an independent commission compromised of equal numbers of Republicans and Democrats. Since the state’s current governing body could not come to terms on the New boundary lines, the Democrat controlled Legislature stepped in to create its own maps. Although New York State Governor Kathy Hochul signed that ser of maps into law, the Court of Appeals said not so fast. Judge Judy DiFiore wrote in

the courts opinion that “it will likely be necessary” to move primaries from June 28th to some time in August in order to give the court master time to move primaries from June 28 to August to allow for time fir the court appointed master to redraw lines for the candidates and election officials to reset the process. This gives considerably less time for candidates to campaign. It’s a decision that will inevitability push back primary dates and has both major parties circling back to square one in the primary process of gathering petitions and signatures to qualify their candidates for a place on the ballot. Suffolk County Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia said everything has to be reset for as late as the end of May. “Right now there are no Congressional candidates, petitions or primaries, and all the work we did for the last five months has to restart from step one,” Garcia told South Shore Press after Judge Judy DiFiore announced her decision. The UN report came as a parallel report was issued by a grouping of U.S. government agencies led by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It, too, presented a damning picture. Among other things, “Sea level rise will create a profound shift in coastal flooding over the next 30 years by causing tide and storm surge heights to increase and reach further inland. In addition to the rise caused by “emissions to date,” “Failing to curb future [greenhouse gas] emissions could cause a rise of up to “7 feet by the end of this century.”

Getting at the cause of climate change—mainly the burning of fossil fuel: coal, oil and gas—and not simply dealing with its effect, is key. That’s completely possible technically. The resistance is from vested interests: the coal, oil and gas industries, and their political clout.

The UN report was issued and the presentation by Guterres made at the UN in New York —across the East River from Long Island, among the ground zeroes for climate change impacts. In Suffolk County, announced recently was a $1 million plan for county projects to “counter the impact of stronger storms and

increasing flooding resulting from climate change,” as Newsday described it. “Projects could include beach nourishment, wetlands restoration and open space acquisition,” said Newsday, summing up the plan. County Executive Steve Bellone said: “This is all of us stepping forward to say that we have to aggressively address coastal resiliency.” The reaction of Kevin McAllister, a native of Center Moriches and president of the Sag Harbor-based organization Defend H20—who has been in the forefront in Suffolk in speaking out about climate change and what is being done and not being done—says of the plan: “Open space acquisition, particularly with coastal lands, is a meaningful endeavor in response to a rapidly

rising sea. Wetland restoration is, of course, important but let’s be clear, expanding and revegetating wetlands is very different from dredging new ponds for mosquito reduction, the current county priority, which is, in fact, contrary to the absorption of floodwaters. As to so-called beach nourishment, this is a strategy that is both environmentally and economically unsustainable and that only delays and makes more costly what really needs to happen—moving back from the edge and out of harm’s way.” Published last week was an article titled “Climate Adaptation Is Going To Be A Disaster” by Andrew Dessler, professor of atmospheric sciences at Texas A&M University and co-author of

Straight A’s in New York

The state of New York football (not including Buffalo) has been depressed for years now. The Giants had chances to improve, picking at the top of the draft multiple times, yet came away with mistake after mistake. The Jets have been so bad for so long, they seem like the epitome of what not to do with an NFL franchise. There was very little light at the end of the tunnels for fans of both teams, and with the recent histories of both, that light might have been an oncoming train. So, when we saw the New York teams slated to make 4 picks in the first 10 in this year’s NFL draft, the fans were skeptical of their franchise leadership. All that changed on Thursday night when not one, but both New York teams received glowing accolades for their selections. It is widely accepted that the Jets had the best draft night, and one of the best in recent memory. The Giants also, almost universally,

received A’s across the board on their first two picks. The Jets landed Ahmad “Sauce” Gardner at #4 overall. Gardner was considered by most as a sure fire pick, and the best corner in the draft. He was a long shot to get to Gang Green at #10 with 20:1 odds to get there, so the Jets were aggressive passing the obvious need for a wide out for the shutdown corner. Then came pick #10 and the Jets landed the WR that many believed would go to them at 4. He was 10:1 odds to be picked 4th overall, Garrett Wilson. If they stopped there this would have been a very successful night, but they weren’t done. As the NFL world watched FSU pass rusher Jermaine Johnson fall, the Jets were aggressive and traded up to nab him late in the 1st round. This made their ‘very good’ draft, simply exceptional. The Giants meanwhile, grabbed a player that many

had #1 on their big boards for many months and even the night before still had a short betting line to go #2 overall in Oregon pass-rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. He is exactly what the Giants needed and the only negative was this offensive starved team still had a hole.

The return of Ronald Acuna happened with the calendar still showing a few days left in April. His return blew away all expectations and it is pretty obvious this ain’t the same procedure from the 80’s and 90’s. Acuna suffered the tear of his ACL ligament in August of 2021 and it was sad to watch one of baseball’s brightest young stars being carted off of the field. But his rehab from the surgery to heal his anterior cruciate ligament is a tremendous endorsement of this young man’s heart and dedication as an elite athlete. The best part is his fearlessness on the base paths as he is running the bases with seeming reckless abandon. I must confess that the aggressiveness in stealing bases seems to throw all caution to the wind. But Acuna insists he is better than before the injury. He basically only needed one week of rehab down in the minor leagues. This does all seem too good to be true. Considering there was already a shortened spring training, it seems that Acuna is basically heading out to start his regular season with the equivalent of a week of spring training. Perhaps Acuna is just that talented that he can go from

the gym on to a major league field with no need for a month of minor league games needed to prepare. Will I be surprised if he does goes through a slump at the plate? It seems common sense to expect it. Am I going to bet against it? Heck no. In my dynasty league the owner who has Acuna is looking forward to activating him for Week #4 of the baseball season. In my NL-only league the owner that took him in the first round of this year’s draft had him activated for Week #3 and threw caution to the wind that he would get no plate appearances for Tuesday or Wednesday night. In hindsight he is getting rewarded for his bold move as Acuna went out and stole 2 bases on his first night back. Acuna was obviously protected in all dynasty formats. That he was taken in the 1st round of an NL-only format was a little bit of a surprise. I would be a little careful with playing him in DFS lineups as there is talk that he will need to take some days off in the beginning for rest. You have to watch the news wires very closely and rely on guidance from his manager.

Any setbacks to Tatis’ timeline is disastrous to my gamble. If he continues with his rehab timeline it makes my gamble begin to pay dividends. We will monitor.

Justin Verlander’s return from Tommy John surgery has been nothing less than amazing for owner’s who gambled on his return to form in 2022. Verlander possesses a legendary work ethic but the question of what will he look like in August is an interesting one. At age 39, the Astros may be tempted to monitor Verlander’s innings closely. It seems reasonable to expect some missed starts in August and September but whereas I am inclined to keep Verlander in my dynasty league if I own him, I would consider moving him in

Julio Rodriguez was the #2 prospect in the pre-season as rated by Baseball America. But there is no way that anyone could have predicted he would be at 8 stolen bases on April 29th. Or should we have? Rodriguez stole 16 bases in 48 Double AA games in 2021. Just crude math leaves me tripling the 16 steals to project 48 stolen bases over a full season. With 8 stolen bases entering Week #4 of the 2022 baseball season he is also on a pace for 50+ stolen bases in 2022. The superb performance in running the bases is starting to become a big piece of the story. Tell it. Promote it. Market it. I made a prop bet before the season started that he would lead baseball in home runs for 2022. I wonder if I can get odds on him to lead baseball in stolen bases.

VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Stress is the feeling of being overwhelmed or unable to cope with mental or emotional pressure. We all go through life facing different stresses.

problems. Instead they lead to isolation and deeper stress. A pet dog may help due to the fact that they would love to hear your story and will never tell it to anyone.

Chronic Stress. This is the grinding stress that wears us down over the years. It arises from serious life problems that may be fundamentally beyond our control: poverty, war, racism. This may be also in some cases be referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). As veterans this may occur due to being in combat, being given poor orders or directions by our leaders or alter heavy duty assignments. Unfortunately the longer the stress is present the stronger it becomes. Stress is actually a strain on the system; for example, if you put a weight on the end of a wooden board trickling out in space, at some point the weight will cause the wood to snap. With chronic stress the longer it is held in the greater the stress gets until the victim’s mind snaps. Alcohol or drugs do not help stress

Management. Most texts state that one suffering from stress need to eat right, get the needed sleep and exercise, but unfortunately this may help the body but not the stress problem. To relieve the stress one has to let it out. This is done by telling someone about the stress problem. For example, if one goes to a psychiatrist with this problem they will usually have you sit down or lie down and tell them the problem. However, most veterans with PTSD are afraid to seek that help for fear of the stigma of being labeled with a mental disorder. There are two other options open to getting the help. The first is the VA hospital where they will treat you and do not report it to the state. The other is peer and clergy help. The Suffolk County American Legion has over 100 Legionnaires and over 50 Auxiliary members

trained in peer support. In addition they have trained over 59 clergy how to help veterans relieve their stress. Their help is between the veteran and them and kept private. To understand how our program works is simply demonstrated and explained in the following illustration. The veteran takes a glass of water

(which represents stress) in his/ her hand, and while standing up, holds it out straight in front. The longer it’s held, the heavier the stress gets. A veteran peer comes along beside the veteran holding the glass, and seeing the stress, the veteran peer makes the veteran comfortable by helping him/her to sit down in a chair. This also lowers the height of

the outstretched arm holding the glass, making it easier for the peer to hold the arm with the glass and reduce the stress. However, there is still stress. Then along comes a clergy who takes the glass of water (stress) away. Thus, the stress is relieved. Post Traumatic Stress is a serious problem and requires serious help.

What is a Honeymooner’s Will?

My spouse and I are recently married, and my friend suggested that we get a Honeymooner’s Will. Is this something we need?

There is no such thing as a honeymooner’s will, but maybe there should be. Once the honeymoon is over, the gifts opened and every conceivable photograph posted to social media, it is time to start considering the legal implications of getting married. There may be a name change, joint bank accounts, and IRA beneficiary change forms. Most newly married couples fail to check estate planning off their lists because they consider themselves too young to worry about such things. The uncertainty of the pandemic has caused almost everyone in the world – no matter what age—to consider their own mortality. A recently married couple needs to ensure that their newly entwined life includes each other in a legal sense, as well as in a practical sense, in that they need to know each other’s preferences under worst case scenarios. Most couples do not need more than a basic estate plan, consisting of Advance Directives and a Last Will and Testament.

Everyone eighteen years of age or older needs advanced directives: Living Will, Health Care Proxy and Power of Attorney. A Living Will allows someone to specify if they want to be kept alive by artificial means if they are in a vegetative state with no reasonable expectation of recovery. A Health Care Proxy allows a person to choose who will make medical decisions in case that person cannot do so. In New York State, only one agent can act under a health care proxy at a time, which avoids confusion and tearful showdowns. A Power of Attorney is a powerful document that allows the principal to name one or more people to handle a wide range of financial matters in case of incapacity. If a married person dies without a Will in New York State and has no children, the spouse inherits all the assets. This may not necessarily be what the newlywed couple wants – especially regarding heirlooms, ancestral real estate, or a closely-held business. What about real property that one spouse borrowed money to buy with the oral promise to pay back

that they are provided for, and avoids unnecessary delays in transferring wealth.

a parent or sibling? Nobody should ever rely on a spouse’s promise to carry out “informal” instructions after death – this rarely happens and creates family tension. If married with children, the spouse receives the first $50,000 of assets plus 50% of the remaining assets; the other half goes to any minor or adult children. Court scenario. If the children are adults from a previous marriage – this automatic allotment may not be ideal. Remember, the intestacy statute is a default blunt instrument and leaves no room for nuance. Finally, there are practical considerations to dying with a Will versus without, that affect loved ones and make a painful process worse. Life Jackets Save Lives – Yours!

For many years, we referred to lifejackets as “PFD’s” – Personal Flotation Devices. Jeesh, can the lawyers get over it? OK, not everyone in a life jacket survives. Roughly only 15 out of 16... Conversely, if you go in the water without a life jacket, only one guy comes out. The other 15 died. Life jackets save lives. This column is about that.

The Statistics

Boaters end up in the water for a variety of reasons but the two largest – capsizes and falls overboard – comprise nearly 60% of all fatalities. Let me rephrase that. A fatality is a death – let’s not mince words like “PFDs.” Remember, for every 16 boaters that go into the water without a life jacket, only one comes out. The other 15 died. But you are experienced. Well, another statistic I’ve seen is this. Boaters who have over 100 hours of boating experience – and are 35 or older – and who have NOT taken a formal boating safety class – account for over half of all boating accidents. Oh, they are also responsible for over half the fatalities – deaths – too. If you haven’t taken a boating safety class yet, or haven’t taken one in a long time, email me below and I will help you find one in your neighborhood… And, if you have been smart enough to take a boating safety class,

remember this. You’re not alone out there.

Learn this 30-Second Lifesaving Skill!

It’s easy to don (put on) a life jacket or inflatable vest in the cabin or cockpit. Just like a coat, you stick one arm through a hole; swing the jacket around your back; then stick your other arm through the other hole. However, this sequence of actions will be impossible to duplicate in the water. Most of your body will be submerged with just your head and shoulders exposed above the sea surface. You must use a simple, littleknown method to don any life jacket in the water. Practice this important skill in the comfort of your home. Train your crew. After two to three minutes of practice, most folks can do this in less than 30 seconds. Follow these five easy steps. 1. Grab the collar of the life jacket. Pull the life jacket close to you. Turn

What to Wear by Whom?

USCG regulations require a life jacket aboard for every boater aboard unless they are under 13 years old. Then they must be on. But didn’t I make the point above that if you do fall overboard and you don’t have one on, it is pretty unlikely you’ll be able to get into one? Isn’t it too

late then? Yes, yes, yes! So why only have the kids wear it? And all those kids, seeing dad not wearing one, are saying to themselves, “I can’t wait until I’m old enough not to wear one…” What a lesson you’re teaching, skipper. I’ll tell you a story that ought to bring the point home. One fine day while patrolling Moriches Bay, we came upon a family fishing in an open boat. It looked like there were children aboard and further we couldn’t see any with life jackets on. As we approached, I heard the grandfather say to one of the kids, “Get down, the Coast Guard is coming!” Unfortunately for grandpa, sound travels well over the water and I heard it at the helm. As we came alongside, I gave the wheel to one of my crew and walked up to where our boats were closest together. All I said to grandpa was, “You ought to be ashamed of yourself.” We watched, without another word, as all the

children put their life-jackets on.

Oh They Are So Bulky!

Come on, bunky, are you still using the ones from the Titanic? Modern life jackets come in many sizes, many colors and are as light as a feather. You can get them in “camo” mode for hunting; you can get ones that selfinflate if you do fall in; you can get them in matching colors! You can even get children’s style that have a loop at the collar so you can scoop them up, one-two-three, if the tyke falls in! And don’t forget one for the old sea dog – and his pet. OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE Although not an archangel, Metatron is a very important figure in God’s scheme of things. According to angelic folklore, he is the Scribe of God. This makes him a key angel in the hierarchy of angels. In fact, he is one of the elite group permitted a full view of God. Metatron has a throne very close to God’s. His throne is far less ornate than the one occupied by God. God permits him such proximity because as His scribe he records the good deeds of the faithful and the evil deeds of all others. God shares His innermost thoughts with Metatron and tells him everything He wants revealed to angels and men. However, Metatron did not start out as an angel. There was once a holy man named Enoch. He was a mystic, seer, and teacher. He lived during a dark period in human history. Transgressions against God and man were running rampant. Enoch spoke out against the escalating decadence of his time and led by his pious example.

His perceptions of God and His Divine will attracted a large following during this corrupt period. One night Enoch was awakened by two angels and instructed to make preparations for a long trip. The duo from heaven showed Enoch sufferings which were endured by punished sinners. He was then given a tour of the galaxies and finally

brought before the Creator by the Archangels Raphael and Gabriel. God asked Enoch to take a seat and take notes as He proceeded to impart wisdom to him. Enoch was able to compile 366 books of God’s words. God shared great secrets with him and highly privileged information. It included secrets about creation and the end of the world.

After recording the official word of God and after God was satisfied that his protégé was adequately oriented, Enoch was returned to earth briefly to instruct everyone of all he had learned at the foot of the Creator. After 33 days he was escorted back to heaven. Once back in God’s luminant, radiant presence, Enoch’s form changed due to the gushing

infusion of God’s grace and his acquisition of wisdom and enhanced spirituality. God gave him wings for physical mobility. He gave him unbound vision and perception for his intellectual and spiritual lucidity. His physical quickness was important for him to move about the universe and collect data for his writing. He was to be heaven’s ace reporter and always had to be on the spot when news broke. He was now well equipped to assume his role as God’s Recording Secretary. At an act of God’s will his body became illuminated with celestial flame and he crackled like a lightning rod with thunder emanating throughout his essence. Once this metamorphosis was complete, Michael and Raphael gave him magnificent new garments which glowed in love and joy. He was then escorted to his throne at the foot of God and his name was changed. Holy choirs of jubilant angels proclaimed him “Metatron, Scribe of God.”
