Suffolk County Legislature Aims to Codify Term Limits Third District Legislator, Jim Mazzarella, is the bill’s co-sponsor, and cited his own election to the Suffolk Legislature as an example of why residents endorse the “12 years is 12 years” term limit concept. A bipartisan group of Suffolk County Legislators stood shoulder to shoulder last week during a press conference to announce legislation that will tighten term limits of 12 years for Legislators, the County Executive, and the County Comptroller, collectively. Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer, Kevin McCaffrey, said a loophole exists that allows Legislators who served the 12 year term limit to take a brief hiatus, then run again for the same office. The new law, if approved, would prohibit Legislators, the County Executive, and the County Comptroller from ever seeking re-election to the same office, even after a 12 year run. “The law as it is now has ambiguity, and this bill will make it clear that 12 years is 12 years,” McCaffrey said. “That’s
what the voters supported 12 years ago, and now we’re here to close the loophole that exists in the current law.” McCaffrey went on to talk about the scenario in New York State politics where there are currently no term limits in the State Legislature: “New York State has no term limits, and politics there have gone wild,” the Presiding Officer reiterated. The bill’s sponsor, 18th District Legislator Stephanie Bontempi, announced this legislation paves the way for “new candidates, new ideas, and new changes,” and “promotes diversity in local government.” Bontempi added, “Elected office is a privelege that is not to be abused. Good government offers choice and transparency.” She said the law as it exists allows for the possibility of a candidate to run after a break in 12 years.

New York’s top court ruled in favor of a lawsuit brought forward that prohibits Legislatures from imposing term limits on these offices. The 62 counties lack the power to regulate the number of terms for these offices who arrive offices established by the New York State Constitution.
The full Legislature was scheduled to convene to codify the law during a meeting this week after the South Shore Press deadline. McCaffrey said he expected the amendment would secure the majority support of the Legislature before it is placed on the November ballot in the form of a referendum for voter approval. The measure is the first part of the Republican Majority’s “People Before Politics” slate of legislation in a series of government reforms.

The flags, which were donated by Lowes will line the roadway in preparation for the upcoming Memorial Day parade. Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano and Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale joined forces with officers and members of the American Legion Arthur Clune Post 1533, the Mastic Beach Property Owners Association, the Pattersquash Creek Civic Association, the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber, the Bay Area Civic
Association, Colonial Youth and Family Service Agency, James V. Kavanaugh Knights of Columbus, Columbian Club and the Mastics Moriches Community Library. The Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 30, 2022. The parade will start sharply

In the wake of not receiving the support of the Suffolk County Republican and Conservative parties for reelection in November, Suffolk County Clerk, Judy Pascale, was granted the right to face off against Smithtown Clerk, Vincent Puleo, in the June 28th Republican Primary. Pascale is fighting to keep the County Clerk position which she has held since she was appointed by former New York Governor George Pataki on March 10, 2006. Suffolk County Board of Elections Republican Commissioner, Betty Manzella, verified Pascale’s right to appear on the primary ballot is based on New York State Acting Supreme Court Justice Donald Leo’s decision which he handed down last week: “The decision has come from Judge Leo who has granted Judy Pascale’s attorney’s motion to dismiss his case (which was a validating proceeding), and ruled that it did not have jurisdiction to hear the issues of fraud, because there was no invalidating proceeding -

Reached for comment following Justice Leo’s decision, Mark Grossman, a spokesperson for Pascale, (who is the only female to hold a countywide elected position), told South Shore Press that the Suffolk County Clerk is satisfied with the New York State Court of Appeals’ decision: “Judy is pleased by the Supreme Court’s decision, and she is looking forward to a victory on June 28th.” (There was a split decision between the Republican and Democrat commissioners). Grossman continued, “Over the last several weeks, Judy has received lots of support from the rank and file, and law enforcement has been very, very strong in supporting her. They were carrying her petitions, and they continue to support her.” Grossman noted that Pascale is receiving additional support across many sectors of Suffolk County. “She’s receiving lots of messages of support across all sectors in Suffolk County,”
Thorne and Northridge Group Install Fence at Mercy Center
Last week, Legislator Dominick Thorne (R-Patchogue) and Sponsor Northridge Group of East Patchogue built a fence for Mercy Center Ministries in Patchogue. Mercy has been providing shelter and comprehensive services to Suffolk County’s homeless youth and young mothers since 1983. “Northridge Group volunteered their materials and labor to make this a reality. In an interview following Justice Leo’s decision, Puleo expressed optimism: “I take being asked to run for Suffolk County Clerk very seriously, and I do plan on being victorious on Primary Night.” Puleo said he plans to take his 16 years to experience into
the office of the County Clerk to “improve on what’s being worked on over the last few years.” Asked for specifics, Puleo stated: “A fresh set of eyes will help to implement what’s been accomplished in the past few years and I want to specifically target electronic media and making the website much more user-friendly.” Puleo said the deed process can also be streamlined: “When a deed is submitted to Suffolk County, it takes an inordinate amount for the verification and submittal process, and I want to continue to work on this so that the process is smoother and more expeditious.” Under Pascale’s leadership, the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office, which is one of the largest in the State, has earned the distinction of numerous awards and recognitions including ‘Best of New York’ designation three times.

John Giannott has been appointed Chairman of the Board for Suffolk OTB. Giannott, a successful, established business entrepreneur, overseas Jake’s 58 Casino. He is also Deputy Parks Commissioner for the Town of Brookhaven for the past 10 years. Giannott and his wife, Jenni, are co-owners of the popular Porters on the Lane Restaurant located at 19 Bellport Lane, just steps away from the bay. He also owns Carla Marla’s Ice Cream Parlor which he identifies as a “staple in the community,” and is situated across the street from Porters on the Lane. In a recent interview with South Shore Press, Giannott spoke candidly about what he brings to the table as Chair of the OTB Board. “The Board is an oversight committee that approves

or disapproves spending in our daily operations,” Giannott explained, noting that transparency and accountability by the Board are first and foremost in its duties and responsibilities. “I was chosen (for the appointment to Chairman of the Board), because of my financial management and
people skills in working in the Town Parks Department, and I’ve managed over 1,000 employees at Porters,” Giannott explained. Add to that Giannott’s voluminous charity work, including his affiliations with Angels of Long Island and other nonprofits, and Giannott brings a wide array of experiences that, in the wake of “clawing its way out of bankruptcy,” will guide Jake’s 58 down a path of success and prosperity for the local community. “Over the years, I’ve owned 12 small businesses, and none of them have failed,” Giannott added. Giannott said the Board convenes once monthly to conduct official business.

Porters on the Lane The South Shore’s Go-To Restaurant

Porters on the Lane, nestled in the heart of the Village of Bellport on 19 Bellport Lane, and just a stroll down to the Bay, is the go~to place for casual or formal dining, as well as for special occasion celebrations. Upon entering the classy, subtle~nautical ambiance of Porters, the staff is welcoming, and the cuisine is prepared and plated to perfection for presentation before anticipating diners. John Giannott and his wife, Jenni, are partners in the business which they established in 2008. During an interview on the restaurant’s picturesque porch with John Giannott, the restaurateur offered up his recommendations from the menu, and gave an overview of the restaurant’s beginnings and the history behind the building circa 1860’s. Our interview was occasionally, (but pleasantly), paused by passerby locals who said “hello” or waved to Giannott. It quickly becomes apparent that Giannott and his restaurant are beloved staples in the quaint Village of Bellport. Before we enter the conversation about menu offerings, it’s important to note that the Giannotts source all their food locally, the cuisine is prepared fresh, and the portions are, indeed, generous! Asked for his number one pick off the menu, without hesitation Giannott points to his version of Porters’ lobster roll. Porters’ lobster roll was featured on a televised food show and is deservedly ranked among the ‘Best on Long Island’. “Each roll has a whole fresh lobster including tails, claws and knuckles,” Giannott notes. Talk about generous portions! The lobster roll is prepared from whole fresh lobster on a roll topped with drawn butter with dill mayo drizzle was featured as one of Long Island’s best. This is a must~try for seafood lovers! There are plenty of seafood offerings including oysters and clams on the 1/2 shell, shrimp and lobster cocktail which are among selections at the Raw Bar.
But, the outdoor dining tables on Porters’ picturesque porch are what Giannott says are the “hottest seats in town.” At the height of the summer season, Giannott says there can be tables available in the dining rooms, yet, patrons have been known to wait 45 minutes or longer to dine porchfront overlooking Bellport Lane.
Appetizers can be as pleasing to the pallet as the can be teasers to lunch or dinner entrées. Porters’ Appetizer offerings include but are not limited to a tender marinated filet mignon tidbit skillet, crab cake accompanied by jalopeno corn salsa and guac and spicy aioli. Toasted coconut shrimp, steamed or baked clams, mini tuna tacos, Philly sliders and fried calamari are also served up daily at Porters.

The only problem this reporter finds is what to ultimately select from the wide array of offerings, and that’s not a bad thing. The wine list is just as varied as the cuisine choices, so arrive prepared to be pleased. Patrons who frequent Porters on the Lane occasionally stop at the bar to enjoy cocktails before taking a seat to dine. “The bar is great,”Giannott acknowledges. “We have a nice bar crowd that we’ve built up over the years, and sometimes people make a quick stop there before going to their tables.” Porters offers a main dining room, and the more secluded Fireplace Room, the latter of which seats 30. Maximum interior seating is 88 and for parties of 70 guests or more, the entire restaurant is exclusive for that affair. The nautical ambiance of Porters on the Lane has been

Weik Pushes Legislation to Cut Home Heating Oil Bills, One-Time Rebate Aims to Provide Relief to Families from Soaring Prices
State Senator Alexis Weik today announced that she has introduced legislation to provide homeowners with a one-time rebate for home heating oil costs that have soared in the past year amid raging inflation. Senator Weik’s bill, S.8877, would provide homeowners with a rebate check up to $500, based on the number of gallons of No. 2 heating oil purchased. That amount represents about half the increased cost of fuel oil, based on current prices. “Amidst record-high inflation, Long Island consumers are reeling from higher prices on everything from groceries to gasoline, and are facing a new shock over the next few weeks as they begin to renew their annual contracts for home heating oil,” said Senator Weik (R-C, Sayville). “I’m pleased that we were able
to provide at least some relief in the new State Budget by cutting the per-gallon tax on gasoline. Now, we need to take the next step and help homeowners who are worried about how they can afford to keep their homes warm and safe next winter.” Senator Weik was a leader in the successful fight to roll back New York’s gas tax, which will lower the price at the pump by at least 16 cents-per-gallon beginning June 1. The average price for home heating oil on Long Island has risen 62% since last year— topping $5 a gallon, according to the most recent weekly survey by the NYSERDA, the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency. Under Senator Weik’s bill, NYSERDA would be responsible for collecting consumer information from energy
providers and sending a rebate check directly to homeowners based on how much heating oil they use. Nearly half of households in Suffolk County—238,000—rely on fuel oil for winter heating. In Nassau, the number is closer to
one-third. Higher consumer prices across the board have resulted in record sales tax collections for the state and its counties. The state Comptroller estimates that local sales tax collections in the first three months of this year grew
by nearly $1 billion, with state government expected to show a similar increase. That is more than enough additional revenue to pay for the cost of the heating oil rebate program. Senator Weik’s bill was sent to the Senate’s Energy Committee.

That work includes his involvement in local community activities, such as being a member of the local Mastic Shirley Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and also served on the William Floyd School Board. Brookhaven Highway Department Installs Wildlife Tunnel on East Bartlett Road to Protect Migrating Amphibians
Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro and Supervisor Ed Romaine announced the recent installation of a wildlife tunnel to facilitate safe road crossings for small animals and amphibians and reduce the effects of road mortality on East Bartlett Road in Middle Island. The frequency of road mortalities is noticeably higher for amphibians and reptiles which often move slowly across roads between breeding ponds on East Bartlett. For several years, dozens of frogs – including five species: Spring peepers, wood frogs, bull frogs, green frogs and grey tree frogs – were killed by passing vehicles each Spring, as they emerged from the winter season and attempted to access breeding ponds across East Bartlett Road. The tunnel, which cost $22,280 and was paid for by Brookhaven Town, was

installed to allow the migrating amphibians to safely move back and forth between the ponds, located on either side of the road. At-grade level, it is equipped with a grate to allow sunlight to enter. The animals are guided and funneled into the tunnel through the use of erosion control fabric fencing, which was installed along the road edge.
Dayton Avenue Organizes Effort to Help Those in Need

Two Dayton Avenue Elementary School students in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District recently approached building principal Dr. Shelita Watkis with an idea about doing something as a building to help those affected by the crisis in Ukraine. The students turned their idea into reality and
organized an essential items drive where they collected clothing, shoes, first aid items and toiletries. The president of the Pre-Health Professions Club at Farmingdale State College, Holdy Chauvette, accepted the donation and sent people out to collect the items and delivered them to St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Uniondale.
“One of the first amphibian tunnel systems in the United States was built in 1987 along Henry Street in Amherst, Mass., to protect spotted salamanders,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “Since then, local
and state governments have been implementing projects to mitigate the impacts to wildlife by constructing overand underpasses. If we can do anything to minimize or reduce the number of mortalities in Brookhaven Town, we’re happy to do so.” “We have an obligation to protect wildlife that resides within the Town’s boundaries and these tunnels will undoubtedly save countless amphibians from being killed by passing traffic,” said Supervisor Romaine. “As Spring emerges and the weather warms, these amphibians will be able to move back and forth without the fear of being killed.” “Wildlife species on Long Island face many challenges to their survival and the Island’s
extensive road network can be an especially difficult challenge, especially for slower moving wildlife,” said John Turner, consultant to the Town of Brookhaven as a Land Management Specialist. “The installation of the tunnel addresses one problem area and allows for frogs, toads, salamanders and turtles to safely go about their lives and can serve as an example as to what can be done in other areas where high numbers of animals are roadkill victims.“ Councilman Michael Loguercio said, “Too many wild animals die along our roadways and while we often cannot do anything to prevent this unfortunate outcome, in this case we could, and I am very happy we did.”

Bil Baird on U.S. Supreme Court Majority Overturning Roe v. Wade
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN A decision by the U.S. Supreme Court involving a longtime Suffolk County person—Bill Baird—was at the base of its subsequent Roe v. Wade decision which legalized abortion in the United States. Now, Roe v. Wade is likely to be overturned by a court majority. A draft opinion leaked to Politico written by Justice Samuel Alioto sets the stage for it. And Baird, long a resident of Centerport in Huntington Town, who after death threats and the firebombing of one of his birth control/abortion clinics on Long Island has lived in another state, was expressing his outrage to me last week. The three Trump nominees to the Supreme Court—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett—should, said Baird, be “removed from office” for testifying that Roe v. Wade was established precedent when they underwent confirmation hearings before the Senate Judiciary Committee. “They lied,” said Baird. “All they wanted to do was to get into office and prevent women from getting abortions.” Baird began battling for legalized abortion after, in 1963, as the clinical director of EMKO, a manufacturer of birth control products, he was

at Harlem Hospital “coordinating research, and “I heard the scream of a young African-American woman covered with blood” from the waist down. She was bleeding caused by “a piece of coat hanger” used in a selfinflicted abortion. The unmarried woman, who already had nine children, “died in my arms.”
the “National Right to Life Convention”—he says the term “right to life” was devised as part of the anti-abortion PR strategy postRoe v. Wade. At the conventions he conducted a “dangerous noontime picket” bearing a cross written on it “Free Women From The Cross of Oppression.”
He was to establish the Parents Aid Society, and later the ProChoice League, and be jailed eight times in five states for advocating birth control and legal abortion.
His clinics, in Hauppauge and Hempstead—the Hempstead clinic was struck by a man who barged into the waiting room wielding a firebomb in 1979—are now gone. But Baird, who will be 90 next month, keeps going. He urges people to translate their support for legal abortion in elections this and coming years making sure “they choose candidates who support a women’s rights to make their own decisions,” and to otherwise take action.
In 1967, students at Boston University sent Baird a petition asking him to challenge the Massachusetts’ “Crimes Against Chastity, Decency, Morality and Good Order” law. He gave a presentation at the university attended by 1,500 students in which he gave a female student a condom and a package of contraceptive foam. Police immediately “swooped in” and he was arrested as a felon, convicted and sentenced to three months in jail. Thomas Eisenstadt was to become the sheriff of another Suffolk County—Suffolk County, Massachusetts—so Baird’s challenge of the Massachusetts law was titled Baird v. Eisenstadt. In 1972, Supreme Court Justice John
J. Brennan, Jr. wrote the decision in that case stating it was legal for an unmarried person to be provided contraception. It declared: “If the right of privacy means anything, it is the right of the individual to be free from unwarranted governmental intrusion into matters so fundamentally affecting a person as to whether to bear or beget a child.” That decision—and its emphasis on the “right of privacy”—would be the basis the following year for the Roe v. Wade decision in which the Supreme Court ruled it was legal for a woman to have an abortion. Other arrests of Baird included
one in Huntington in 1971 at a presentation attended by 300 people, he related. He showed a birth control pill and a diaphragm, and on the basis of a mother being in the audience who was “holding a 14-month baby,” he was “handcuffed” by the Suffolk County Police Department, “spent the night in jail” and charged along with the infant’s mother with “endangering the welfare of a child.” There would be other legal challenges including two more cases before the U.S. Supreme Court. Further, Baird “every year for 30 years” went to an anti-abortion gathering called

The Rangers ended the regular season with the second best defense in the league. They were expected to beat the Penguins, but the odds showed they should struggle in doing so. With -110 odds for the series this was all sort of expected. It didn’t make things any easier for Blue Shirt fans though. Fans and media began to have questions, questions that no one would have imagined. During the series, Igor Shesterkin
was not only named a finalist for the Vezina Trophy (best goalie in the NHL), but also was announced to be one of the 3 finalists for the Hart Memorial Trophy, hockey’s MVP. He looked anything but that early on in the playoffs though, being yanked from the game in 3 games. The Pens offense was on fire for a part of this series, scoring 14 goals in two games. The Rangers #2 ranked defense seemed disoriented and
out of answers. Igor Shesterkin allowed 25 goals in the series. To understand how unreal that was, he had not given up more than 24 goals in any month the entire season. There were questions about their biggest asset. Panarin, their team leader, was also off and noticeably a different player and the questions began with him as well. But, when they could have laid down, they stepped up. Like their social media moniker says there was #NoQuitinNY. The Blue Shirts won game 6 and forced a game 7 ... at the Garden. Line makers believed the Rangers were going to win, but even with Igor and home ice advantage they were only -120 in game 7. They did just that. Artemi Panarin erased all of that with an overtime goal.This was the 46th time in NHL history that a game 7 went into OT and while this was not “Matteau, Mattea, Matteau!”, this will certainly live in Rangers fans minds forever. With that Panarin goal there is an opportunity for

Every single baseball season there is a guy that comes along and breaks his previous mold. This player breaks into previously uncharted territory and establishes a new level of competency. During the 2021 season it was two pitchers who did this. Carlos Rodon and Robbie Ray broke out and did things that fantasy sports owners had never seen from them before. Much less even hinted at. Which brings us along to this curious case of Taylor Ward. This Los Angeles Angel is batting .367 with a .490 on base percentage, His OPS stands at a Ruth-ian 1.199. This player hit .259 in 2021 with a .769 OPS. A load of fantasy baseball teams have Taylor Ward leading them to surprise 1st place standings at the moment. You did your off season research, you looked at all the sleeper and bust lists that you could get your hands on. So what gives? How did I miss Taylor Ward? Why am I losing to Taylor Ward? Taylor Ward was added as a free agent waiver pickup in my Dynasty Mixed League on April 25th. This is important to recognize for its importance. Don’t let anyone in your league tell you they saw this coming from Ward. Because if they

Why Am I Losing to…….. Taylor Ward?

No in fact, the Angels demoted Adell to get him back to full playing time as no common sense could be used to argue that Taylor Ward should lose playing time to anyone right now. The batted ball statistics on Taylor Ward are impressive and fully support his statistical excellence currently. Ward has compiled thus far a 21.4% strikeout rate vs. a 19.1% walk rate. Elite territory. Ward has a 37.3% swing rate. Ward swings at 58.7% of pitches in the strike zone. Ward chases at and swings at 15.9% of pitches outside of the strike zone. Ward swings at 39.8% of fastballs. These numbers that are customary from Mike Trout. In other words this is some of the most selective pitch selection going on in all of baseball right now. It is a knee jerk

What is Armed Forces Day?
VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Armed Forces Day is a joint celebration of all six branches of the U.S. military. The day honors all those currently serving in the military. It is celebrated on the third Saturday in May and is one of several holidays that are part of National Military Appreciation Month. There are presently about 1,376,658 military personal, many stationed is about 70 different countries. This holiday should not be confused with Memorial Day or Veterans Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that remembers and mourns those who have died in U.S. military service. Veterans Day, also a federal holiday honors the service of all U.S. military veterans, both living and deceased. The history of Armed Forces Day goes back to August 31, 1948 when Louis Johnson, the first secretary of defense, announced the creation of Armed Forces Day to replace the individual celebrations by the different branches of our military forces. The first official Armed Forces Day on May 20, 1950, B-36

bombers flew over each state capitaļ over 10,000 veterans and troops led a march through Washington D.C., and other festivities took place nationwide to honor and acknowledge the armed forces. On March 18, 1961 President John F. Kennedy declared Armed Forces Day an official national holiday. Presently we have approximately 1,376,658 active military personnel serving our country and protecting our freedom. Since the draft ended in 1973, all of our military personnel have enlisted in the military. While the importance of Armed Forces Day is to honor our military and acknowledge everything they do to protect our country they need that support now more than ever. The morale of our military is at a very low level due to their current events such as leaving Afghanistan. They are all aware of the fact that the military was ordered to leave Afghanistan leaving Americans and those that helped the troops behind. The suicide rate of military personnel
has increased 150 percent due to that low morale. Recent reports show the increase rates of suicide for both veterans and active duty personnel are outpacing those of the general population. Researchers’ estimates 30,177 Global War on Terror veterans have died by suicide, compared to 7,057 who have died while
deployed in support of the Global War on Terror. We need to show them that we the civilian population of this country are proud of them and appreciate the fact that they are there to protect our country at all costs. Some

commemorate this important day include the flying the American flag, wearing red white and blue, and attending public events celebrating the day, sending a care package to a service member away from home, or simply saying thank you to a military service member.

Getting Care with Community Medicaid
Q: What is a split shift and why is it so hard to get? A:
Community Medicaid is a government funded, need-based program that covers long term care services in one’s home. This means that recipients who qualify can have a home health aide help them in their home. There are two main assessments needed to qualify for Community Medicaid. The financial assessment determines if the applicant is below certain income and asset levels. After meeting the financial guidelines, the applicant undergoes a care assessment. Typically, the care assessment will determine how many hours per day, days per week, Medicaid will cover the cost of a home health aide.
Many clients inquire about the “maximum” number of hours that Medicaid will cover. The answer is that it depends on the evaluation. There are three different options: (1) a weekly hours award, (2) livein, and (3) split shift. The first
option occurs when the nurse authorizes a set number of weekly hours, for example, fifty-six (56) hours per week or eight (8) hours per day. This would mean that an aide would come to the house at a set time each day and then leaves at a set time. The live-in option occurs when the applicant needs full time care but can sleep at night without assistance. A livein aide is paid for thirteen hours per day and then is “off the clock” the remaining time. This allows the aide to get some rest, but still be available during the night if the applicant needs help (i.e. going to the bathroom). The rule of thumb is that so long as the aide is getting five hours of uninterrupted sleep per night, live-in care is usually appropriate. The third option, split shift, is when one aide works a full twelve-hour shift and then a second aide comes to the home and works another twelve-hour shift. A split shift is authorized when the applicant needs active assistance both day and night.

To have split shift approved, the applicant must show a substantial need for assistance both day and night. For example, if the applicant is unable to move in bed unaided and there is a high risk of bed sores, split shift may be authorized if an aide must “turn” the applicant every few hours. Or if the applicant wakes up frequently at night to
walk around or use the toilet and the live-in aide is unable to get the five hours of sleep, split shift may be authorized. The assessment may find that a person’s nighttime needs can be met by using adaptive equipment or supplies, such as a bedside commode or diapers. There may informal caregivers who can help at night.

Split shift is the most expensive option because Medicaid pays the aides for a full 24-hour period. Unlike live-in care, where the aide is only paid for 13 hours. With the added expense, applicants have a difficult time persuading the nurse to recommend split shift. An applicant can always appeal if the desired level of care is denied or decreased. Hunkering Down – Hurricanes – NOAA Updates “Average” Season

As of June 1, hurricane season is upon us. Almost without exception, we get the tail, shoulder or rump of one or two of the dozen or so that form up in the Atlantic between the Caribbean and Africa and bring so much destruction and misery with them as they thunder west and north… We live on an island. And now an “average” season is worse than ever. This column is about that.
NOAA Will Issue Hurricane Prediction Soon
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will issue its initial 2022 hurricane season outlook soon. Like last year, we expect that the “average” is going up. The NOAA’s definition of “average” has increased because it’s now using a 30-year period of record from 1991 to 2020. The previous 30-year period used storms from 1981 to 2010. “Major hurricanes” are defined as Category 3, 4 or 5 based on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale (see table below.) Hurricanes that fall in these categories have sustained winds above 111

miles per hour, which can cause catastrophic damage that could result in power outages and leave residential areas uninhabitable for several days to months.
Categories of Hurricanes
We’ve all heard the weather reporter state that “Hurricane ‘x’ is now a Category 3 hurricane and headed for ________.” What does that mean? Want to put some familiar names on the numbers? Irene, 1999, CAT-1 Sandy, 2012, CAT-1 Floyd, 1999, CAT-2 Georges, 1998, CAT-2 Betsy, 1965, CAT-3 Alicia, 1983, CAT-3 Hugo, 1989, CAT-4 Andrew, 1992, CAT-5 Katrina, 2005, CAT-5 Dorian, 2019, CAT-5 USCG hurricane aircraft reported Andrew, Katrina and Dorian had generated winds over 200mph at various times of the storms. Another term for CAT5’s is “Wrath of God.”

When looking at CAT-5s’, no one is saying that there is no difference between a storm that brings 160-mile-per-hour winds and one that reaches 190. The force of the winds goes up with the square of the velocity. In layman’s terms, that means a hurricane with 200-mile-perhour winds has four times — not just double — the force of one with 100-mile-per-hour winds. The

statistics it uses for its prediction models once a decade. “This update allows our meteorologists to make forecasts for the hurricane season with the most relevant climate statistics taken into consideration,” said Michael Farrar, director of NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction, in a statement. The official hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov.

OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE There has been speculation as to whether or not angels existed during the times of the cavemen. Were there Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal angels? Were angels more visible in those times when people lived closer to nature? By the time history was recorded, the images of angels are visible in art and pictographs. The city of Ur in the Euphrates Valley, some 140 miles from Babylon, was settled around 4000 B.C., reached its peak in 2500 B.C., and continued for another 1500 years. There, archeologists have discovered an upright monument depicting a winged figure descending from one of the seven heavens of Sumerian belief pouring water from a jar into the cup of a king. There have been found other early depictions of giant winged griffins in Mesopotamia. Also, a winged Isis holding those faithful to her in her wings was discovered in an Egyptian tomb. In ancient Greece Iris, the rainbow of Zeus, and Hermes, herald of the gods who wore

wings on his helmet and feet, acted as angels as they carried messages and gave assistance to mortals. As a matter of fact, the concept of angels is present all over Asia Minor and extends west into Italy where centuries later the winged Greek Nike, Goddess of Victory, would evolve into the Renaissance angels. As we know in our Judeo-
Christian culture the word angel describes their function as messenger. But other words for angels indicate other roles for them. They have been called gods, sons of God, ministers, servants, watchers, and holy ones. They are called spirits, the heavenly army, and the Heavenly Host. In the Book of Job, they are referred to as “morning stars” and in Psalms “the chariots of
God.” Angels have existed from the beginning of time. They existed before Adam and Eve were living in the Garden of Eden and were present when they were exiled for their sin of disobedience. The Cherubim, one of the orders of angels closest to God, stood guard at the east gate of Eden with flaming swords to ensure that they could not reenter.
Cherubim means “fullness of God’s knowledge.” Their origin is Assyrian where their name means “one who prays” or “one who communicates.” In Islam they are considered “those brought near” to Allah. They praise God unceasingly. In Assyrian art, Cherubs are depicted as winged creatures with either human or lion faces and bodies of eagles or bulls. In the Middle Ages, the Cherubim were often described as blue or wearing blue, typical of the possessors and bestowers of wisdom. As time went on Cherubs became thought of as babies, a throwback to Roman lore. They were childlike in form and appearance and usually hovering like Cupid around beautiful women. These Cherubs are quite different from the awesome beings of Ezekiel’s vision or of those cherubim who guard the east gate to Eden. For sure human perceptions of cherubs and angels in general have constantly evolved since the earliest of days.
