Manorville Man Indicted in Connection with Shootings of Businesses, Residence; Charged with Hate Crimes for Alleged Harassment on Social Media committed the five shootings and was responsible for damaging the vehicles.
Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy D. Sini today announced the indictment of a Manorville man in connection with five shootings throughout Suffolk County in 2020 as well as the alleged harassment of several victims via telephone and social media. The alleged harassment includes messages that were anti-Semitic and anti-LGBTQ in nature, which have been charged as hate crimes. “This defendant is an alleged menace who has terrorized a number of individuals in our community based on his perception of their religion and their sexual orientation,” District Attorney Sini said. “He allegedly harassed numerous victims; he shot a gun into a residence and several establishments throughout Suffolk County; he vandalized cars; and he repeatedly sent extremely disturbing messages to his victims on social media that have caused them to fear for their lives and the safety of their loved ones. We are not going to stand for that in Suffolk County. We are taking this case extremely seriously and investigating it thoroughly, and have indicted this individual on 36 criminal charges, including several hate crimes.” “For months, Christopher Keller spewed hate and created life-threatening situations for individuals causing unnecessary harm and fear,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said. “I would like to thank members of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and Fifth Precinct Detective Alberto Acevedo for their tireless work to identify, locate and arrest this defendant while bringing a sense of relief to his victims.” Christopher Keller, 36, of Manorville, is charged with three counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class D violent felony; two counts of Reckless Endangerment in the First Degree, a class D felony; two counts of Criminal Mischief in the Second Degree, a class D felony; three counts of Aggravated Harassment in the Second Degree as a Hate
Subsequently, one of the victimized businesses’ employees reported to detectives that he had been receiving threatening messages via Instagram that included antiSemitic rhetoric and imagery depicting the Holocaust. The investigation revealed that Keller had allegedly sent the messages.

The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office and Suffolk County Police Department’s Fifth Precinct Squad detectives were investigating five shootings that occurred in Suffolk County in 2020, including the shooting of a residence in Kings Park on Nov. 22, 2020; the shooting of a retail business in Holtsville on Nov. 22 and Nov. 25, 2020; the shooting of a business in Medford on Nov. 28, 2020; and the shooting of a retail business in Nesconset on Dec. 1, 2020. Vehicles at the Kings Park location had also been shot with a pellet gun on Oct. 17, 2020; Oct. 18, 2020; and Oct. 31, 2020. Additionally vehicles at a residence in Medford were shot with a pellet gun on July 17, 2020; July 26, 2020. The investigation revealed evidence that Keller had allegedly

Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs PBA Welcomes New Recruits
Pursuant to the investigation, law enforcement executed a search warrant at Keller’s residence in Manorville on Feb. 12, which resulted in the seizure of an assault rifle, a .40 caliber semiautomatic pistol, a .22 caliber rifle, and multiple large capacity ammunition feeding devices. Keller was arrested following the search warrant on Feb. 12. Keller was arraigned on the indictment today in front of Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Richard Ambro. At the arraignment, the Office requested that the defendant be held in jail pending the completion of his case. The Court released the defendant on $300,000 cash bail, which he had previously posted, with GPS monitoring and supervision by the Suffolk County Probation Department. He is being represented by Glenn Obedin and is due back in court on May 3. If convicted of the top count, Keller faces a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Laura Sarowitz,

Suffolk County Deputy Sheriffs Police Benevolent Association welcomes thirty new Deputy Sheriff recruits to their ranks. Two separate Police Academy classes were approved for hiring and they began their training only two weeks apart. Due to the significant increase in retirements over the last year, the ranks of Deputies had become dangerously low.
Deputy Sheriffs PBA President John Becker stated, “We welcome our new deputies and salute them for answering the call to public service during these difficult times in law enforcement. They will face a much higher level of scrutiny than ever before and find themselves under constant attack on both a state and national level.”
Don’t Fall for Vaccination Survey Scams Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale would like to bring to the attention of Suffolk County residents a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alert regarding an e-mail scam seeking credit card and banking information related to a COVID-19 vaccination survey. People across the country are reporting getting emails and texts asking them to complete a limited-time survey about COVID-19 vaccinations. In exchange, people are offered a free reward, but asked to pay shipping fees. These unsolicited surveys are a scam as no legitimate survey would ask for your credit card or banking information.

Governor’s Wedding Restrictions Hurt L.I. Brides

According to Giglio, restaurants and catering facilities have been brought to the brink of bankruptcy by an ever-changing series of mandates and restrictions. “First, they couldn’t open at all, and then only until 10 o’clock and then 11, and you couldn’t have a drink unless you bought something to eat,” she said. “You were told how many people you could have at your wedding and how to dance. Everyone needed to be tested. Can someone please tell me what science this is based on?”
Gov. Cuomo mandates and restrictions have raised the ire of one group and they let him have it Friday at a press conference in Hauppauge. The Brides of Long Island, with the help of Assemblywoman Jodi Giglio, organized a large group of brides, grooms and their families to send a message to the governor: “Let the wedding bells ring.” “The governor’s rules are unnecessarily restrictive, confusing and unreasonable,” said BOLI founder, Heather Cunningham. “We believe they are ultimately unfair to not only brides, but vendors, venues and guests.” “The restrictions on weddings are ridiculous and will not only ruin your special day, but are hurting an entire industry,” Assemblywoman Giglio told the crowd outside of the H. Lee Dennison Building. “You have called and you have complained and have even started a petition

Joined by Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and Senator Alexis Weik, Giglio continued: “We all want to stay healthy during COVID and the hospitality industry has taken extraordinary steps to make sure we are safe. But we live in America, and the restrictions have gone too far. Honestly, does the virus pack up and leave after midnight? Because that’s what the governor wants you to do at your wedding. Does it matter if you have 150 guests or 151? Does the virus know if
you are dancing with a member of your immediate family, or just a friend? And who wants to be wearing masks in their wedding photos? If you want to pose with your man without a mask on, that’s your right. If your guests want to pose with you, isn’t that their decision?” “Now Gov. Cuomo has to answer to you,” DeStefano said. “Now he has to tell the Brides of Long Island that he knows what’s best for you even though he’s basing his decisions on nothing more than his opinion. Let him explain why casinos and pool halls and bowling alleys can fully open, but you can’t have your wedding.” Senator Weik praised the BOLI organization for its efforts to convince the governor to lift the wedding restrictions, including a petition drive and email campaign. “If I were him, I wouldn’t keep the brides waiting any longer,” Weik said.

past year, it was in all of our best interests to practice fiscal responsibility, particularly when a significant portion of our budget is being funded on one-time federal stimulus funding.
The coronavirus pandemic has presented a historic financial challenge for everyone, including the State of New York. As the Governor began his Executive Budget proposal this past January, the State was preparing for billions of dollars in revenue shortfalls and the need to either cut critical programs or significantly raise taxes. Specifically, the Governor said the State needed to fill a $15 billion hole or have to make drastic budgetary decisions. Fortunately, however, the State received better than expected revenues and billions of dollars in federal stimulus funding. In fact, after the most recent stimulus bill, our entire budget shortfall was closed, and it became clear that all necessary funding for the State Budget, including properly funding schools,

health care, infrastructure, etc., could be funded without the need to increase taxes or advance irresponsible spending. As the Ranking Member of the Senate Budget & Revenue Committee, I was clear: after the
The Democrat Majority’s in Albany decided to take a markedly different path. Their $212 Billion Enacted Budget, which was passed a week late on April 7, increased spending nearly 10% (the largest increase ever) and raised taxes on individuals and corporations. While there were parts of their Budget that I supported due to COVID changes and adaptations—such as significant increases in aid to education— there were many aspects of their Budget I vociferously opposed. For example, the Democrat Majority’s approved $2.1 Billion in federal stimulus
funding to illegal immigrants. This “Excluded Workers Fund” would allow these individuals to receive up to $15,600 each. The Excluded Workers Fund was more than double the amount of funding set aside for small business relief. Whereas other states used those funds to assist businesses with the expense of unemployment costs—costs that were incurred by agreeing to press “pause” for the safety of our communities— Democrats in Albany sought to give the funds to illegal immigrants. Their Budget also failed to exempt from state taxation up to $10,200 for lawful citizens who received pandemic-related financial assistance, which was done for federal taxes at the federal level. Lastly, with all of the superfluous spending advanced in this year’s Budget, the Democrat Majority’s
never advanced nor even considered reinstating the property tax relief checks they let expire in 2019. Our constituents have been desperately seeking property tax relief, particularly during COVID, and these Majority’s failed to deliver. This was a historic budget in many ways, unfortunately for mostly the wrong reasons. It is grossly irresponsible spending on programs that are not to the benefit of the 3rd Senate District. This Budget does not lower taxes, cut spending, or provide appropriate relief to our small businesses. I am deeply concerned that this Budget will exacerbate the already steady exodus of our State’s population and businesses to other states. While I supported the increase in education spending for our districts, I opposed the rest.

For the eighth consecutive year, the South Country Central School District has been designated by the NAMM Foundation as one of the nation’s Best Communities for Music Education for its outstanding commitment to music education and for demonstrating outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. The NAMM Foundation is a nonprofit supported in part by the National Association of Music Merchants and advances active participation in music. To qualify for the Best Communities for Music Education designation, the district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas. “The music program here at South Country has continued to provide students with a well-rounded education from kindergarten to the 12th grade,” said District Music Chairperson Victoria Hartman. “This award
recognizes the commitment our teachers, administration and community make toward a child’s educational, cognitive, emotional and social skill development by way of a strong music education program.” Ms. Hartman explained that during the pandemic, school districts like South Country have re-committed to their already stellar music education programs, which provide valuable ways to keep students engaged. Bellport High School junior and vocalist Emma Butler described the importance of music in her life. “Music is important to me because it provides me with an outlet to express myself throughout the school day,” Emma noted. Bellport High School Principal Timothy Hogan expressed his deep pride in the district’s music program. “Even during these turbulent times, our teachers have provided a supportive and meaningful experience for our students,” Mr. Hogan said. “I look forward to a return in normalcy in the years ahead but am thankful for the opportunities and experiences provided to our students in the interim.”

The two heroes, retired NYPD officer Frank Recupero (center) and Guillermo Sandoval (fifth from left) selflessly and without regard for their own personal safety assisted the injured officer who was the victim of a stabbing on South Ocean Avenue in Patchogue. Judges compile a proficiency list of competing students at each NYSSMA festival around the state before inviting the top students on the proficiency list to the All-State Conference. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN With major publishers, one after another, buying up other major publishers, the existence of a small, independent, highly active book-publishing firm in Suffolk County is notable. The company was put together by Martin Shepard, who passed away in December, and Judith Shepard, his wife. HarperCollins, in a $349 million deal last month, bought Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, a venerable U.S. publishing company. Will Harper Collins, owned by Rupert Murdoch, follow in its tradition? Highly unlikely. And this is just the latest consolidation among major publishers. As The New York Times reported in its story on this sale: “The book business has been transformed by consolidation in the past decade.” This has included Penguin Random House buying Simon & Schuster last year— in a $2 billion deal. That acquisition, said The Times, “has drawn scrutiny from antitrust regulators and has raised concerns among booksellers, authors and agents.” It and the other consolidations in book-publishing should raise concerns for everybody. For books, newspapers, radio and TV and other media, many voices, a variety, are needed to keep people fully aware. As English free press crusader John Milton centuries ago described it, a “marketplace of ideas” is vital for an informed citizenry. trailblazing operation begun by Marty and Judith. Judith had been an actress, Marty a psychiatrist and author. In an interview with book reviewer Norm Goldman on the website www.bookpleasures.com in 2011 he related how he had written 10 books, all these for major publishers. When he wanted to “revive an out-of-print book” and “when none of my publishers wanted to reissue it, we decided to do it ourselves…So that’s how we began: starting two imprints: Second Chance Press and The Permanent Press.” Mr. Goldman started the interview by speaking of their commitment “to publishing works of social and literary merit and how, over the decades” their publishing house “gained a reputation as one of the finest independent presses in America.” Marty also commented in that interview how his going into publishing was “an extension of my own life-long sense of rebelliousness from arbitrary and misguided authority.” For instance, during the Vietnam War, he noted, he co-founded Citizens for Kennedy/Fulbright—”the first ‘Dump Johnson Movement.’ We had chapters in 15 states, preparing to deny LBJ renomination, and eventually [President Lyndon] Johnson retired.” Marty said of major publishers that they “no longer give new and mid-list writers the attention they deserve, and if a first- or second-time author doesn’t sell a minimum of 10,000 copies, that’s it: on to the small

This is good for us, but bad for new writers and for the public who are being fed the same formulas over and over again. The joke is that despite all this, the conglomerates are still losing money while pursuing their dreams of what might make ‘Best Sellers’ instead of choosing ‘Best Books.’” And this was before the consolidation further producing homogenized publishing. Marty and Judith published three books I wrote. The first was Cover Up: What You Are Not Supposed to Know About Nuclear Power. After the Three Mile Island nuclear

ORIGINS of the COLD WAR
Following the end of World War II the uneasy wartime alliance between the United States and the Soviet Union began to unravel. By 1948 the Soviets had installed left-wing governments in the countries of
eastern Europe. The Americans feared the permanent Soviet domination of eastern Europe and the threat of them taking over western Europe. The Cold War had solidified by 1947-48, when U.S. aid provided to western Europe had brought those countries under American influence and the Soviets had installed openly communist regimes in eastern Europe.
The Soviet Union sent troops to preserve communist rule in East Germany, Hungary,
Dominican Republic and Grenada. In 1991 the Cold War came to an end.
The Cold War reached its peak in 194853. In this period the Soviets unsuccessfully blockaded the Western-held sectors of West Berlin (1948-49); the United States and its European allies formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), a unified military command to resist the Soviet presence in Europe (1949). The Soviets exploded their first atomic bomb in 1949 thus ending the American monopoly on atomic bombs. The Soviets supported the government of North Korea’s invasion of South Korea in 1950 setting off a war that lasted until 1953. In 1953 Stalin died and the Cold War tension somewhat quieted down until 195862 when the Soviet Union began developing intercontinental ballistic missiles, and secretly installing them in Cuba in 1962.

He asked me to put together a new edition. Meanwhile, he approached major publishers but got the same “no” that Hilda got. So Marty and Judy took the new edition—and put it online for free downloads! How’s that for a bold, independent press operating from Suffolk.

However, Eisenhower denied his request and the Russians took the eastern capital cities. Patton wrote, “We promised the Europeans freedom. It would be worse than dishonorable not to see that they have it. This might mean war with the Russians, but what of it?” His notion of meeting the enemy “now, rather than later” in retrospect seems worthy and of stopping Stalin in his tracks and offering Eastern Europe a chance at liberation. As Stalin devoured Europe, Patton remarked, “I have no particular desire to understand them except to ascertain how much lead or iron it takes to kill them… the Russian has no regard for human life and they are all out sons-ofbitches, barbarians, and chronic drunks.” Many believe the need to silence Patton made him the first victim of the Cold War.

Lou Lamoriello Gets His Guys

BY TOM BARTON The Islanders are now run by former Devils GM Lou Lamoriello and Lou just went and got his guys at the trade deadline. With the Isles in a virtual tie for first place in the East this season, the man in charge saw his opportunity to win and seized it. Lamoriello saw Anders Lee go down for the year and immediately reacted by making a deal for former Devils Kyle Palmieri, Travis Zajac and Braydon Coburn . Lou was out in front of the trade deadline frenzy and by all accounts gets an A grade for
the move. He got some veteran presence, and very solid players, without disrupting any of the team chemistry which already exists. Some have called the move “a depth” move but it’s what the players bring besides just on the ice that has Islander fans excited. You can’t overstate how important it is that both Zajac and Coburn have contributed to contending Cup teams. Palmieri is the notable exception but what he adds on the ice is exactly what New York needs and that is a power play presence that should pay

immediate dividends. The Islanders still sit with some big odds to win the Stanley Cup this year at 13 to 1 odds but now it can be argued they are the deepest team in the league. They also are the favorites to win the East at +175 odds. Lou may have gone out there and targeted players he knew something about and liked, but that doesn’t mean it will be any less effective. Avoid Tax Traps When Giving Assets to Grandchildren
Is it true that I must pay 40% tax on large gifts to my grandchildren?
Generation Skipping Transfer Tax (GSTT) is the tax imposed on transfers made to grandchildren, or individuals (other than a spouse) who are at least 37 ½ years younger than the donor of the gift. GSTT sounds complicated, and can be complicated, but the concept is simple. The tax was instated in 1976 to prevent wealthy individuals from leaving assets to their grandchildren as a way to avoid estate taxation twice – once when they leave assets to their children and then again when their children leaves assets to their children. The IRS will not allow “skipping” to deny it the opportunity to tax a generation. Under current law, if transfers are made to a skipped generation in excess of the permitted exemption, currently $11.7 million, the IRS imposes a 40% tax on the transfer. The transfer could be made at death through a Will or Trust, or during a person’s lifetime as a gift outright or to
a trust. For those making transfers to grandchildren with a net worth less than $11.7 million, no need to fear any tax consequences – yet. With a new administration comes the possibility of changes to the tax law. Some recent proposals include reducing the estate tax, and likely the GSTT, exemption to $3.5 million per person. If your estate exceeds that threshold, there is additional planning you should take advantage of now before 2022.
Beware the Accidental Skip
If your estate is subject to GSTT, there are opportunities to explore with your estate planning attorney to ensure that you do not inadvertently trigger the GSTT. Certain transfers, such as direct bequests to grandchildren will surely trigger the tax, but there may be indirect skips that “accidentally” trigger the tax for the unwary.
To illustrate, if you leave assets to your son in trust with income for life, with the remainder to your grandchildren at his death, since those assets are not taxed in your son’s estate, they are subject to the GSTT because they will “skip” a generation. However, you can accomplish the same objective and avoid the tax by drafting the trust so the assets do pass through your son’s estate. Alternatively, by allocating a portion of your exemption to such a trust during your lifetime, the appreciation escapes estate tax and the GSTT. Accordingly, it is important to create your estate plan with a knowledgeable advisor, and not a do-it-yourself or online program.
Gifting to Minor Grandchildren
Even if you do not foresee estate taxes being an issue, if your grandchildren are under the age of 18, you should not make gifts directly to them because minors are not permitted to own assets directly. Rather, consider gifting to a trust for
their benefit, a 529 plan or Universal Transfer to Minors Account. For college age beneficiaries, you will also want to be sure that your grandchild is not applying for any grants that may be adversely affected by the influx of a large gift from their grandparent. Lastly, if gifting to a disabled grandchild who is the recipient of any means-based government benefit

Messy Meetups is an outdoor all-weather program designed to expose families to the concept of child-directed messy outdoor play, and to meet other families with young children who also love outdoor play. The main goals of the “forest school” model in primary age children includes encouraging curiosity and exploration with all of the senses, empowering children in the natural environment, and encouraging spatial awareness

The combination of freedom and responsibility in the “forest school” model has been particularly beneficial to children who suffer from lack of confidence or whose behavior is challenging. With high adult supervision ratios, children can safely experience activities that are often prohibited, such as climbing trees or playing with dirt. Children have the freedom to explore the area within the forest, this helps the child to learn to manage their own safety and move around comfortably. The program allows children to grow in confidence and independence and extend their abilities. The library program is a brief introduction to this model. After listening to their insufferable whining God promised Moses that he would rain down bread from heaven sufficient to feed the entire congregation. BY DOMINICK FORTE A fascinating aspect of all angels in general, and specifically Archangels and Angels in the angelic hierarchy is that like us they eat and drink. Manna is the Hebrew name for the foodstuff that angels consume. The literal translation for the word forms an odd question: “What is this?” While the exact type of food the word represents is a mystery, it is thought to be a rich, earthy, bread-like substance. This is the very same food which has been given by God to humans. Ravens fed Elijah manna during the forty days he spent in the desert.
