Payments to Illegal Aliens Draw Ire of Local Legislators up a huge opportunity for fraud. The payments are part of a larger $5 billion “excluded workers” fund set up for those who were not eligible for unemployment insurance or other federal funds during the pandemic.

“This is an affront to the hard-working taxpayers of our state and the many legal immigrants who will be forced to foot this bill,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano in speaking out against the payments. Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr., along with Undersheriff Steven Kuehhas, Undersheriff Kevin Catalina, and Deputy Sheriff PBA President John Becker, hosted two consecutive ceremonies on Saturday to pay tribute to several fallen law enforcement officers in the most unique way. At the center of it all was K9 Reis, a two-year-old dark brindle colored Dutch Shepherd. It’s not surprising that his handler, Deputy Jason Korte, named him Reis, a tribute to Sheriff’s Correction Officer, Andrew Reister, who was killed in 2008 while working an off-duty job. Reis received a K9 ballistic vest from a collaboration of efforts from Armor Express, Capital K-9 Association, Blue Lives Matter K9, and the Simonsen Foundation of Riverhead, NY. Leanne Simonsen represented the Simonsen Foundation, which was established in honor of her husband, deceased NYPD Detective Brian Simonsen, who was shot and killed February 2019 in the line of duty. The vest was created in tribute to another fallen officer, NYPD Transit Detective George Caccavale, who was only 33 years old when he was shot and killed in 1976 while working an off-duty job. His daughter, Carla Caccavale, and her children, were also present at the ceremony. DSPBA President John Becker stated, “As a former New York City Police Officer

Even with a $12.6 billion federal bailout, the Democrat majority that controls both houses of the legislature voted to raise taxes by more than $4 billion, a spending plan that many fear will force businesses to continue to flee what has become the highest taxed state in the country. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who had long opposed overtaxing businesses in the Empire State, was seen as weakened in budget negotiations by multiple scandals involving his mishandling of the COVID crisis and allegations of sexual harassment by a number of women.

Long Island legislators have been battling with Cuomo to allow the hospitality industry—the region’s bars, restaurants and catering facilities—to remain open after 11 p.m. “These small businesses are bearing the brunt of the governor’s arbitrary mandates and will now be forced to pay even higher taxes to give money to people who aren’t even citizens of this country,” Giglio said, pointing out the newly-adopted budget only provides half the amount to assist small businesses. “It’s no wonder that the taxpayers are furious.”

The budget deal has drawn the ire of legislators across the state. “For years we were lectured by liberals about how much illegal immigrants put into the system compared to what they take out,” said Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor of East Fishkill. “But with one-party Democrat rule and the socialist wing ascendant, they don’t have to bother with that drivel anymore. They are allowing illegal immigrants to take $2 billion out of a program they paid zero dollars into,” the Assemblyman said, adding, “And how have those who actually paid into the Unemployment Insurance system fared during the pandemic? For the past thirteen months, that system has melted down in slow motion.”

“Irresponsible budgeting put the state in a $7 billion hole long before COVID’s devastation upended our economy,” said the leader of the Assembly Republicans, Will Barclay. “This year’s agreement shows that Democrats have learned nothing from the past, and continue to move New York in the wrong direction

Dubois wins MMS Library Election Opponent fails to vote for herself Mastic Moriches Shirley Community Library Trustee Mike Dubois celebrates his victory last Tuesday with family and friends in the MMS Library Trustees Election. Dubois, who was elected to a 5 year term beat his opponent Sheila DelValle by 233 to 78 votes. Dubois campaigned on holding the line on taxes and streamlining the library bond construction process. Following the election certification it was determined that the challenger Ms. DelValle had not voted in this years election and therefore didn’t even vote for herself.

Debbie is not only a member of multiple Veterans organizations, but a leader who tirelessly donates her time and money to these causes. She is the current President of the AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary for the state of New York, as well as the President of the Holbrook AMVETS Ladies Auxiliary Post. She also belongs to the Patriot Guard Riders and the Calverton National Cemetery Support Committee where she continues to volunteer her time to help Veterans. As a member of the Suffolk County Veterans Committee, I work closely with many of these Veterans Organizations within the 8th Legislative District and Debbie has always been a pleasure to work with every step of the way. Besides Debbie’s Volunteer work with Veterans, she is also the Legislative Liaison for Long Island ABATE (American Bikers for Awareness, Training and Education). She has helped to raise $900,000 through this organization for Veterans as well as hold food drives, toy drives and many more programs that benefit our community. As a

current resident of Holtsville, she helps to care for her husband George Stondell who is a Veteran himself. She also works full time as a paralegal.

Brookhaven Town Delivers More Than 108,000 Meals to Seniors Citizens During COVID-19 Pandemic In March 2020, COVID-19 was declared an official pandemic by the World Health Organization. One year later, the Town of Brookhaven continues to operate its enhanced Home Delivered Meal Program by delivering approximately 500 meals a day to senior citizens. From March 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021, a total of 108,309 meals have been delivered by staff from the Town’s Senior Division, more than triple the amount of meals delivered in a normal year. By comparison, during the prior year (pre-pandemic), a total of 30,902 meals were delivered to seniors through the Home Delivered Meal Program. Also, in March 2020, the Congregate Meal Program previously held at the Town’s Nutrition Centers was immediately converted to a Home Delivered Meal Program, and any senior who participated in the Town’s Congregate Meal Program was offered the opportunity to have these meals delivered to their homes by Town employees, five days a week. Funding for the Home Delivered Meal Program is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Suffolk County Office

for the Aging, through the New York State Office for the Aging. To recognize the importance of this program, the Town Board recently adopted a resolution to designate March as National Nutrition Month in the Town of Brookhaven. Supervisor Romaine said, “Brookhaven Town has continued to meet the growing demand of seniors who have turned to our enhanced Home-Delivered Meal Program during this health crisis. This is accomplished through excellent coordination and a dedicated staff. I want to thank everyone for their tremendous efforts.” Councilman Loguercio, Town Board Liaison to the Senior Citizen Division said, “When the pandemic arrived, Brookhaven Town made the necessary adjustments very quickly so we could continue to serve our Town residents, including providing meals to our most vulnerable population. Police Reform Plan is Important Step

Following the horrific death of George Floyd last May, Governor Andrew Cuomo issued Executive Order 203 to reform the practices of police departments across New York State. This directive required all governmental entities with a police agency to conduct a comprehensive audit of their police policies and procedures and then create a reform plan to be ratified by each legislative body by April 1, 2021. Historically, our nation has failed communities of color in facilitating justice and addressing the implications of systemic racism, but here in Suffolk County, we are committed to taking action. The Suffolk County Police Reform and Reinvention Task Force, assembled by County Executive Steve Bellone, convened to do just that. The Task Force, on which I had the honor of serving, created a plan for reforming policing in Suffolk County and was adopted by the legislature on March 30, 2021. This working document is the first step in addressing farreaching inequities and eliminating racial disparities. As we shift our focus to codifying these changes, I want to highlight some of the most meaningful measures outlined in this plan. First and foremost, the plan includes implementing body cameras for publicfacing police officers as part of their uniform requirements. The members

of the Task Force and advocates in the community made it clear that this had to be a part of the finalized plan, and we believe that these cameras will help us more fully understand what occurs on a day-to-day basis in our police force. The plan also includes measures to increase de-escalation training techniques and procedures, which will better equip officers to handle incidents without utilizing force. Notably, the plan includes creating a Civilian Oversight Review Process managed by the Suffolk County Human Rights Commission. The Commission will be responsible for the initial complaint intake and can follow the Internal Affairs Bureau’s investigation in real-time. If the Human Rights Investigator feels that the Bureau isn’t handling the matter with integrity, they can bring the case to the Human Rights Commissioner, the Police Commissioner, the County Executive or the Legislature for further action. Another essential component of the reform plan is the prohibition of consent-driven vehicle searches during traffic stops, which is critical to eliminating disparity and racial profiling. The plan also calls for creating two online dashboards so that the public can easily access statistics on traffic and pedestrian stops by police precinct and geographic area. Upon initiating a traffic, pedestrian,

or bicycle stop, officers will now be required to identify themselves and provide a reason for the stop. In the future, those seeking assistance by calling 911 with mental health crises that are not a threat to themselves or others will be diverted to mental health service agencies instead, who are better suited to get them the help they need. I am incredibly proud of the work we have done in the last year. I look forward to a continuing dialogue and direct legislative action in addressing systemic racism and biased policing in Suffolk County.

Man Arrested for Stabbing Police Officer Suffolk County Police arrested a Centereach man for stabbing a uniformed police officer following a motor vehicle crash in Patchogue. A Fifth Precinct officer in a marked unit observed a 1999 Mercedes Benz, driven by Jonathan Nunez, driving erratically with no headlights on southbound South Ocean Avenue. The officer activated his overhead lights in an attempt to pull over the vehicle. The Mercedes Benz crashed into a 2004 Nissan at the intersection of South Ocean Avenue and Brook Street. Nunez exited his vehicle following the crash, failed to comply with the officer’s commands and engaged in a physical altercation with the officer in the yard of the home located at 473

South Ocean Ave. During the altercation, Nunez stabbed the officer in the leg. Two good Samaritans and responding Fifth Precinct officers took Nunez into custody. The officer was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue and then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured artery and is listed in critical condition. Nunez, 25, of 33 Holbrook Road, was charged with Aggravated

Caracappa recently secured Farmingville Hills Park for use by the Middle Country Cross Country Team. “Middle Country’s meets had previously been held at Sunken Meadow State Park, which is a considerable distance from their area,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “Plus, when all State Parks were closed due to the pandemic, Middle Country’s Coach

Making sure the Forge River Watershed Sewer Project stays on track was a key concern as residents spoke out against possible reductions in the scope of the project. “We’ve been waiting for sewers for years and now is not the time to take our foot off the gas,” Mazzarella told the crowd. “Protecting our water is a top priority and I will work day and night to get this job done.” The William Floyd graduate added, “There’s no way the project is going to be scaled back due to budget issues. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN It was quite a blast at the power of the Suffolk police unions in The New York Times last month—two full pages with the headline: “The County Where Cops Call The Shots.” The county is Suffolk, and the article was written by Farah Stockman, a member of The Times editorial board. It began by quoting a person who cannot be described as “anti-police”— Suffolk Legislator Rob Trotta, “a cranky Republican county legislator on Long Island who worked as a [Suffolk] cop for 25 years,” an “unlikely voice for police reform.” He’s “full of praise for the rank and file” of the Suffolk County Police Department, “Yet Mr. Trotta,” continued the article, “has railed for years about the political influence of police unions in Suffolk County, N.Y., a place where the cops are known to wield exceptional clout. He’s a potent messenger, since he can’t be smeared as anti-cop. He wore a badge and walked a beat.” The piece declared: “Mr. Trotta’s small, quixotic battle on Long Island is part of a much larger struggle in the United States to wrestle power away from police unions that for too long have resisted meaningful reform.” The article focused on the Suffolk Police Benevolent Association (PBA)— which has long been a proverbial gorilla in the political room in Suffolk County.

Now, I know the Suffolk County Police Department well. My first beat at the daily Long Island Press starting in 1964 was covering cops-and-courts in Suffolk. Every morning included my going to Suffolk Police headquarters, sitting down with its commissioner, John L. Barry, and taking notes about police activities going on, then walking down that first-floor hallway and being with Bill Coleman, deputy chief of detectives, taking more notes, and dropping in and connecting with other top officers. In the field, I covered murders and other crimes and got to know, too, rank and file officers.

And Rob Trotta and Farah Stockman are not incorrect. Suffolk police unions wield, indeed, “exceptional political clout” in the county. Let me note, please, I’m a union person. As a professor of journalism for 43 years at the State University of New York, I’ve been a member of United University Professions, the union that represents SUNY faculty and much of staff, and at The Press, a Newspaper Guild member.

Law Enforcement Foundation regularly outspent candidates it targeted for defeat in recent elections.” A Newsday article last year by Michael Gormley began: “The Suffolk County Police Benevolent Association Inc. has become one of Long Island’s most powerful political forces, contributing millions of dollars to campaigns in direct spending or through a related group the union controls despite restrictions

on campaign spending, according to records and political financing experts.” The Suffolk Police Department came into being in 1960 following a countywide referendum in which voters were asked whether they wanted to disband their town and village departments—long the system in Suffolk—in favor of a county department. A majority of voters in the five East End towns of Suffolk voted no, along with voters in several western Suffolk villages including the large villages of Northport and Amityville and some small villages among them like Nissequogue. So, the Suffolk County Police Department is only the uniformed force in the five towns of western Suffolk (outside of these villages). However, it provides specialized services—deployment of its Homicide Squad and Arson Squad, as examples—in all of Suffolk. Through the years county police department unions have sought to enlarge the department. In 2015 the Suffolk PBA helped finance a move to have the Suffolk Police Department take over the Riverhead Town Police Department. Earlier, the police unions, working with the then presiding officer of the Suffolk County Legislature, Anthony Noto of Babylon, campaigned to have the county department expand and take in all the East End.

Coast Guard History One of the main reasons that the public does not recognize the Coast Guard as veterans is that the media rarely includes them. Also, unlike the other military, the Coast Guard goes and returns in units, sometimes just part of a unit but not individually. Thus the public really does not notice their movements. Let’s agree with our government as well as, veteran organizations and thank the U.S Coast Guard members for their service.

FROM A TO Z BY ROBERT CHARTUK When I was 14, I boarded the train at the Center Moriches station with my lawn mowing money and headed to the Bunger Surf Shop in Babylon. To surf anytime other than the summer months on Long Island, you need a wetsuit and at Bungers, I bought the best one they had. I walked back to the station and caught the next train home. The only problem was, at that age I was growing fast and a year later, it no longer fit. So the following fall, it was back on the train with the lawn mowing money supplemented by a windfall from painting Mr. Whittaker’s porch to buy another plush suit. I did it again at age 16 and the biggest beneficiary of my labors—and growth spurts—turned out to be my friend Richard Harkin who fit comfortably into the hand-medowns. Richard was with me that winter day when we paddled across Shinnecock Inlet to get to the better waves on the other side. Covering the 800 feet across

was one thing when the tide was slack, but coming back on the outgoing as we were swept toward the breaking waves was a whole different matter. While Richard had one of my comfy suits, he didn’t have wetsuit gloves and tried to get away with yellow dish gloves over a pair of brown work gloves. He secured them around the wrists with duct tape and the setup worked okay until we headed back across. Just as he was paddling for his life they started to leak and he had the double problem of water logged hands that were going numb. This of course had him hightailing it to Bunger the next day to get some decent gloves. I live across from the Methodist Church thrift shop where the community donates items for resale. One day l see Richard dropping off some bags and l go out to chat. This was in November and l had started to worry about my winter wetsuit which was old in the tooth and getting leaky in the crotch area. It was a hooded Xcel

OK, we got you from the water onto the trailer last week. Now, like the dog that catches the car, you say to yourself, “now what do I do?” Here it is.

Don’t forget to attach a line to the bow and another one to the stern – of adequate length that you can control the boat, as she floats off the trailer, from the dock. I have seen boats float away from guys that didn’t have lines attached! Lines of this function are called “painters”;

Whether you’re arriving at the boat ramp to put the boat in the water or leaving to go home, we start with the same rule – safety first! If you’re at the ramp area to put the boat in the water, pull over to the side and start the prelaunch process. By doing this away from the ramp, you don’t needlessly tie it up and engender the “ramp rage” of all the other skippers. What should you check/ do? Walk around the boat and make sure nothing untoward happened while you were taking her over the road; Hopefully, your engine’s lower unit was supported underway by a support strut. Remove it so you can lower the prop – but don’t lower the prop until you have her in the water! Remove all the tie-downs and straps holding your boat to the trailer – but not the winch strap attached to the bow-eye. That is the last and final thing you do prior to turning over propulsion of the boat to her own engine (more below!) Is the drain plug in? If not, now is the

If you have a crewman, have him or her stand alongside the ramp itself and give you advice and guidance as you start to back the trailer down the ramp. There are as many “rules of thumb” about what happens next as there are skippers but these are, I feel, the soundest.

fact, I’ve found it to be uncomfortably warm for the first half hour or so. That is unless there’s a wind chill since an icy breeze will cool you down quite

Way back when my friend’s brother

Billy took to making surfboards and collected down payments from the local kids. He delivered a few, but never got around to making mine. In adulthood, l travelled to Puerto Escondido to surf the famed Mexican Pipeline. Instead of bringing a surfboard, my plan was to buy or rent one down there that was more conducive to the Pacific waves. Arriving at the coastal surf Mecca, l ran into my old friend Billy, who had made two boards for himself specifically for the trip. I informed him of his failure to deliver 25 years earlier and he manned up by giving me one of the boards. At LaPunta, a little further down the coast from the Pipeline, l rode the biggest wave of my life on that board. Another 15 years passed and l ran into Billy visiting his home town. The surf was up and he wanted to hit the waves with the old crew, but didn’t have a board. I lent him the stick from Escondido and he had a nice time back on the local waters. I haven’t seen him or the board since.

Happy Trails While Trailering – Part II float free with a little help (more below); so, get out now, give her the “once over”, then lower the engine’s prop/lower unit so that the prop is properly positioned for powering the boat; Release the bow-eye from the winch strap; Make sure that your crewman has those two painters in his or her hands; once that boat floats off the trailer, someone on the hard needs to control her or she’ll float away with the wind. (Once the “ramp-vultures” stop laughing, they will get a boat and help you retrieve her.) Now here is the tricky part. Before you get back in the tow vehicle, you ought to put chocks behind the rear and front tires. But, once you do, you cannot assist in the launch of the boat from the trailer by giving her a little “oomph” with the engine of the tow vehicle and your brakes. But you might not be able to get her off the trailer otherwise – unless you really back down to the point that the front tires of the trailer are well in the water – and that can be problematic when you have to drive back up a slippery ramp that you are now well down. So, what to do? Use some judgment. Get a feel for the traction of the ramp, the angle of it versus the depth of the water at its foot and the actions that other skippers took ahead of you. You certainly don’t want to have your tow vehicle get stuck on the ramp or, worse, end up in the drink. But you do

want to go boating. Use some judgment. So, now that the engine is in the water, and you’ve checked for fuel smells/run the blower, start the engine and back the boat off the trailer; have your crewman bring her alongside dock or bulkhead by using the bow and stern painters, and wait for you. If you still have gear to load from the tow vehicle to the boat, drive the tow vehicle off the ramp (allowing others to use it) and then transfer the extra gear. Well, you’ve done it! After a day of boating, getting her back on the trailer and home is basically the reverse of the procedures above. But be

cognizant that the wind and water depth are different than when you put to sea, that the ramp may be more slippery as wet boats have been hauled up the ramp all afternoon and that the boat itself may have picked up some hitch-hikers – algae, seaweed, etc. Use some judgment. And don’t forget to empty the bait well. Phew, what a smell by next weekend! Why Your Estate Planning Attorney & Matrimonial Attorney Should Meet

I am getting a divorce, do I need to meet with my estate planning attorney?

Yes. Any divorce, regardless of the amount of assets of the couple, involves changes to the legal status between two individuals that will have a natural effect on your estate plan. Meeting with your estate planning attorney and having that attorney coordinate with your matrimonial attorney can prepare you for the most positive outcome. With input of both attorneys, you will be able to understand what changes you can make and at what point in the process you can and should make the changes. This last piece can be a tactical decision and will not be the same in all situations. Starting with what changes you cannot make… New York State Domestic Relations Law states that once a divorce proceeding is commenced, neither spouse can change beneficiaries on life insurance or retirement accounts until after the divorce is finalized. They are also legally barred from liquidating or removing assets from retirement accounts, selling or disposing of joint assets or taking a line of credit against

the family residence. Violating any of these provisions can result in a contempt order which the Courts take very seriously. Most couples with existing estate planning named each other as health care agent, power of attorney, executor, and primary beneficiary of a last will and testament or living trust. These are the designations that you likely want to change while the proceeding is pending. Do you want your divorcing spouse to make life and death decisions about your healthcare? For many this answer is a resounding NO! The same answer stands for financial decisions involving a power of attorney and control of your estate after your death. One compelling reason to amend your living trust or last will and testament while the divorce is pending is to change the beneficiary. If your spouse is named as the sole beneficiary, he or she will receive your entire estate if you die before the divorce is final and you haven’t changed your plan. It is not a full-proof plan, the spouse will always have the right to seek a “right of

election” which is the equivalent of onethird of your estate before the divorce is finalized. However, moving two-thirds completely out of the reach of the spouse is significant. Similarly, you will want to remove your estranged spouse as executor or trustee. Even in the most amicable of divorces, the divorcing spouse may no longer be an appropriate person to serve in these positions. Once the proceeding is finalized, New York State Law states that your now-exspouse is deemed to have predeceased you for the purpose of your last will and testament. The effect of this is that your second named executors and trustees will serve and your contingent beneficiaries will receive your assets. Who did you name as successor? Perhaps your child is the contingent beneficiary but you named your ex’s sister as trustee of a trust for your child’s benefit. If so, do you still want her to manage your child’s trust? Even if you have been proactive and amended your documents while going

through a divorce, you should review your plan again after the divorce decree is issued. The finalization will likely lead to a drastic change to your assets, for better or for worse. This change as well as the ability to change retirement and life insurance beneficiaries will require another look at your plan. In addition, estate planning for a single person utilizes different tools and tricks than for a married couple. For those with taxable estates, you no longer have the

benefit of both spouse’s exemptions. All decisions regarding your estate planning pending divorce should be made in consultation with both your matrimonial and estate planning attorneys. The Hedges Hotel

Originally built around 1916 by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dayton Hedges and known as the Hedges Hotel, the facility later became known as the Tangiers Soldier and Sailor Rest Home. The building, destroyed The original wooden bridge. by the hurricane Photo: Brookhaven Town Historian of 1938, was located on the barrier beach just across the original wooden bridge. The bridge itself was completed in 1916 after 6 years of construction and connected Suffolk Blvd (now William Floyd Parkway) to Smith Point Beach. The bridge would be destroyed by ice. President Theodore Roosevelt was said to have stayed while on a waterfowl shooting expedition. Also of note in an old newspaper article was the fact that the American Library Association opened a local branch in the building to provide reading material for visitors.

The Moriches General Store & Post Office

The Edmund Hallock General Store and Post Office was located in Moriches on the north side of Montauk Highway, at what is currently Barntique Village. Built around 1815, it was one of only three post office locations (along with Babylon and Sag Harbor) across Suffolk County at the beginning of its commission. Patricia Aileen (Murdock) Copenhaver, 84, lifelong resident of Center Moriches, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2021, after a long fight with dementia. She was born on June 18,1936, to her parents Charles Sr. and Hazel (Howell) Murdock and was a loving big sister to her two younger brothers. Her dad adoringly gave her the nickname of “Tater” and she was known as Pat, Patsy, and “Ma” to family and friends.

Patricia was a 1954 graduate of Center Moriches High School and went on to marry in 1955, having 6 children with her former spouse-Ralph Copenhaver. She is survived by her brother-George Murdock (Karen) of Sebastian Fl., son-Bret Copenhaver of Venice Fl., daughter-Dawn Copenhaver of Clarksville Tn., sonRandy Copenhaver (Donna) of Center Moriches NY, and daughter-Susan Harrison (Ron) of Flanders NY. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by both her parents, brother-Charles Murdock Jr., first-born daughter-“baby girl”, daughter-Pamela Copenhaver, and grandson-Jason Zemba. A former girl scout herself, Patricia spent many years as a cub scout leader and girl scout leader during the years of raising her children. She was extremely talented and thoroughly enjoyed making crafts but her favorite pastime and passion was making cakes. She self-taught herself and became a Master cake decorator, making many birthday cakes and wedding cakes throughout her years. Most of all, Patricia loved her family with all her heart. She was a kind, sweet, and gentle woman, loved by all, and never hesitated to open her doors to anyone. She was known as “Ma” by all of her children’s friends and her home became their second home. Arrangements are being made for Patricia Aileen (Murdock) Copenhaver to be laid to rest on her upcoming birthday of June 18th in her final eternal resting place at the Mt. Pleasant Cementary, Center Moriches, with a “Celebration of Life” to follow.
