Mazzarella Announces Project Improving Coastal Resiliency in the Mastic/Shirley Peninsula

Suffolk County Legislator Mazzarella (R-3rd District) announced this week that Suffolk County had begun the Tidal Wetland Restoration at Smith Point County Park to Improve Protection against Flooding and Storm Damage at

accomplishing that goal.” The current plan restores 77 acres of tidal marsh, improves local natural conditions, and stimulates marsh growth through native vegetation. The project includes: • Removing materials from existing manufactured berms. • Using berm material to fill historical grid ditches. • Creating new channels to convey water runoff and improve mosquito control. • Establishing new mircopools for fish habitat and mosquito control. The project is funded by a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant. Suffolk County identified the Smith Point Marina as an ideal location for the project. Unfortunately, the massive tidal surge of Sandy caused an estimated 5.7 feet of storm tide, inundating the surrounding neighborhood with as much as 3.9 feet of flooding. Flood inundation also compromised on-site wastewater systems, including septic systems, rendering them inoperable and impacting public health and safety.

“Community engagement and involvement play a critical role in the project planning,” said Mazzarella. “I want to thank the Mastic Beach/Smith Point of Shirley Planning Committee for their efforts in developing the Mastic Beach and Smith Point of Shirley New York Rising Community Reconstruction (NYRCR) Plan.” The NYRCR conducted a risk assessment and determined the community to be at extreme risk of frequent floodwater inundation and vulnerable to erosion over the next 40 years. “The community came together after Superstorm Sandy and said we need to take steps now and plan for the worst to make future weather events less impactful on the community,” stated Legislator Jim Mazzarella. “Today, we are seeing the results of those planning steps as we physically have boots on the
ground implementing a plan to improve the resiliency of our area.” The marsh restoration plan will fill approximately 9,090 feet of existing mosquito ditches using material from adjacent berms and “coir logs,” which degrade slowly and are replaced by sediment and returned to natural marshland. When complete, 2,790 linear feet of narrow, shallow channels and 12 micropools will create fish habitat in the marsh. These micropools are located areas identified and known to breed mosquito larva. “It was truly amazing to get a first-hand look at this work in progress,” said Mazzarella. “By restoring this area to its natural habitat, we promote coastal resiliency, prevent future storm surges, hardening the shoreline while also working to decrease the mosquito population. This project is a tremendous victory for our community.”
Welcome Aboard: Hometown Law Grads Join the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office
On March 29th Legislator Bridget Fleming nominated Denise SmithMeacham of Southampton for the 20th Annual Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Award. Historically, each of Suffolk’s eighteen Legislators nominates a notable woman from their district to be chosen as the County’s honoree. Legislator Fleming chose SmithMeacham due to her outstanding service to the community. For many years, Smith-Meacham has been creating extracurricular programs for students and aiding families in need throughout the Second Legislative District, demonstrating concern for others and solidarity among all of the east end’s diverse communities. In setting a true example to her colleagues in the Southampton School District, Smith-Meacham has organized many field trips and projects for students, providing extra-curricular educational opportunities that extend beyond the typical school day. This work has helped to keep students engaged in school and connected to critical services. Additionally,

has worked extensively to help feed families facing food and housing insecurity. Her compassion in this area can be seen in her 15-year-long efforts feeding the homeless through her local Methodist church as well as partnering with Maureen’s Haven, an organization dedicated to finding shelter for homeless individuals. As the COVID-19 pandemic brought forth new challenges to members of the community over the last couple of years, Smith-Meacham not only helped notify families of available vaccine locations, but volunteered countless hours with many nonprofits and faith-based groups to
help provide food for families in need throughout the east end, including for families in the Shinnecock Nation. “Denise Smith-Meacham’s efforts in aiding those facing hardship, coupled with her drive to improve the education of students, make her truly deserving of the honor reflected by this nomination,” said Leg. Fleming. “Her work shines a light for others and offer our district a model for how volunteer service in the community has far-reaching and lasting benefits for our friends, families, and neighbors.”

District Office of Fleming Leaves Sag Harbor Village for New Home in Southampton Village
On April 1st 2022 the District Office of Suffolk County Legislator Bridget Fleming was relocated from 75 Washington Street in Sag Harbor to 71 Hill Street, Suite F-1 in Southampton Village. Both locations are within Suffolk County Legislature’s Second Legislative District, which Fleming represents. The office of Legislator Fleming was notified in the Fall of 2021 that the then-owner of the building in Sag Harbor that it had been sold. The Buyers informed the office of their intention to transform the office into retail use, with a rise in rent. A Request For Procurement was issued immediately by the County to identify suitable new office space while ensuring costeffectiveness for taxpayers, and suitability for official duties, through the competitive bidding process. The old office at 75 Washington Street was originally owned by Ben Krupinski, who was a wellknown builder located on the east end. In the late nineties, he built the three-story red brick building. Then-Legislator Jay Schneiderman, who preceded Legislator Bridget Fleming as Legislator representing LD-2, moved into the space in spring 2004 and served there throughout his tenure in the Suffolk County Legislature before being elected Southampton Town Supervisor. was elected to the office of Suffolk County Legislator in 2016. Legislator Fleming and staff said a bittersweet final farewell to their Sag Harbor office after those six years. While the team serves the greater Second Legislative District, it was an honor to assist constituents in the Village of Sag Harbor, where many local residents often stopped by to express a concern, connect with government, or simply say hello. On Friday, April 1st, the new office opened in Southampton Village, located across from the Southampton Inn. The move was facilitated by the coordinated efforts of Suffolk County Departments of Public Works and Information Technology, who diligently helped move desks and heavy file cabinets, as well as reconnected computers
and devices so the office continues to be fully accessible and responsive to the public’s needs. Legislator Fleming stated “Thanks to the amazing work of the Department of Public Works, Information Technology, the County’s Law Department and my stellar and intrepid staff, we are thrilled to begin a new chapter in Southampton Village. We look forward to working with residents in the Village of Southampton and making it our new home.” The new mailing address is 71 Hill Street in Southampton, NY 11968. Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Brian Haldenwang, West Islip High School educator who was recently named a New York State Master Teacher, at a West Islip Chamber meeting. He has been teaching at the school for the past 15 years, was among 228 educators from 129 statewide school districts chosen by Governor Andrew Cuomo to join the State
Master Teacher Program, educators who specialize in science, technology, computer science, robotics, coding, engineering, math and integrated STEM courses across grades K-12. He currently teaches International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology and serves as the IB Extended Essay Coordinator as well as the Students Acting for the Environment (SAFE) advisor.
Loguercio Celebrates New Dunkin’ Drive Thru Grand Opening in Bellport Bonner Honors Eagle Scouts from Shoreham Troop 161
On April 7, Councilman Michael Loguercio (front row, fourth from left) celebrated the grand opening ribbon cutting for the Dunkin’ Drive Thru located at 1669 Montauk Highway at the corner of Michigan Avenue. This new Dunkin’ Drive Thru is another example of the economic redevelopment happening along Montauk Highway in Bellport. I remember when I first met with Mr. Bathija and discussed the economic redevelopment of this parcel and many others in the area. I am happy that we are working with this business to provide jobs to local residents and continuing to build on the revitalization of this corridor.”
On April 6, Councilwoman Jane Bonner attended the Boy Scouts Court of Honor ceremony for new Eagle Scouts from Troop 161 in Shoreham. The event was held at St. John the Baptist RC Church Parish Hall in Wading River. Troop 161 was first Chartered in 1958 by the Shoreham Fire Company and since its inception they have awarded the rank of Eagle Scout to 120 young men. During this time, many adults have volunteered to support the troop and at the present time, they have over 10 uniformed Scout leaders and a committee of more than 8 members guiding a troop of over 50 Boy Scouts. Take Back 25 Litter Clean Up On Saturday, April 2nd, “Take Back 25 Litter Clean Up” was held where participants met up at the Home Depot in Coram. Sponsored by local civics, Fire Departments, Legislator Thorne, Councilman Loguercio and others, this event will kickstart future cleanup efforts on Route 25 to help revitalize Main Street. Also there, were other members of the Town Council and Supervisor Romaine, NYS Senator Mario Mattera, and several other members of the Suffolk County Legislature. County departments including SCPD were also involved.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN Is peace possible? Or is war a never-ending part of the human condition? For 20 years, from Suffolk County I would regularly go to the United Nations in New York for meetings as a charter member of the Commission on Disarmament Education, Conflict Resolution and Peace sponsored by the UN and the International Association of University Presidents. At the entrance of the UN, one passes its garden with a collection of statues donated by member nations, including one of a man with a hammer beating a sword into a plowshare, as Isaiah urges in the Bible. There’s also a statue of a giant pistol, its barrel knotted so no bullet can be fired. The president of the SUNY/ College at Old Westbury where I’m a professor, L. Eudora Pettigrew, who was the commission’s chair, asked me to be a member. Like the UN itself, it had diverse membership—people from all over the world. This included leaders of peace organizations, academics, and also, interestingly, several military representatives A central part of the commission’s work was conflict resolution—the name for an area

of intense study and development in the last several decades— focusing on how conflicts can be resolved through peaceful methods and settlements arrived at. Conflict resolution theory has many applications including for schools, businesses and nations. The commission was an initiative for peace with which I was thrilled to be involved. But in the last two months, what it strove for has been challenged by the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, the savagery, the extreme violence of Putin’s onslaught, the killing of large numbers of innocent civilians and the decimation of a neighboring country. Only last week came news of the ghastly atrocities committed by the Russian forces. Not only did I regularly travel to the UN but I journeyed globally on the commission’s behalf. This included going to China where I coordinated a panel at the World Conference on Women about women and children being main victims of war. In Norway I gave a presentation on the threat of nuclear-powered weapons being placed in space based on a book I wrote, Weapons in Space. I helped run a program in Japan in which

our peace studies course module was unveiled to hundreds of college and university professors, deans and presidents. Its main author was commission member Dr. Victor Sidel, co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. I gave presentations in Thailand, in Mexico, and at the UN. On Long Island, I ran conferences for the commission at SUNY/Old Westbury. My wife, Janet, who taught at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor, would tell me about conflict resolution techniques being used at the school. At the UN many of those involved in peacekeeping weren’t well informed about
conflict resolution methods in schools, I found, and, likewise, the activities of the UN “Blue Helmet” folks didn’t seem to be related in school programs. So, I coordinated having several hundred high school teachers and advisers from Long Island and the city join with UN peacekeeping personnel for a two-and-a-half day conference at SUNY/Old Westbury and the UN to share their work. For leadoff speaker, I arranged to have Stephen P. Marks of Southampton, long involved in UN peacekeeping work, just back from Cambodia and writing a new constitution to bring democracy and peace to a nation that had been through the nightmare of the Khmer Rouge
Linda Pentz Gunter of the organization Beyond Nuclear penned an article before the Russian army moved on to nuclear power plant sites in Ukraine, one of which it shelled. She predicted “Ukraine’s nuclear plants could find themselves literally in the line of fire” and wrote about “the misguided megalomaniacs who run far too many countries in this world” and their “war-mongering.” She said the mix of war and nuclear power is another reason “we must stop using nuclear power.” The “reality is that we are a warlike species,” she noted. “Nothing in our history suggests we are evolving on this front, even if most of us abhor war.” Peace is possible—but takes a lot of work, understanding and a new direction for humanity on a planet in which a form of mass murder called war has long been practiced.

The New York Yankees offseason was, by many accounts, a colossal disappointment for fans. Bombers faithful had their eyes set on Carlos Correa, or a consolation prize being Trevor Story. Not only did New York not sign a big name free agent, but Story went to the rival Red Sox. General Manager Brian Cashman’s moves were looked at as penny pinching and overall, just not enough bang for their buck. But, for Yankees fans, to quote Stephen Stills it’s time to “Love the One You’re With”. The Yankees offseason is behind them and now it is time to embrace what moves Cashman and the front office did make, and not concentrate on what they didn’t do. It’s not like the Yanks sat on their hands. The roster looks much different than it did last year, and even the starting lineup is vastly different. Josh Donaldson and Isiah Kiner-Falefa represent
a new side of the infield. Fans can argue about Donaldson’s age and contract, but none of that matters because his on field production is an improvement. Gary Sanchez has left, and while his bat might be missed, the new look Yankees have gone from a -16 pitch framing catcher to two of the best in the league. And, until robo-umps come to the game this is still a vital part of pitching. The Yanks bench and bullpen arms also got slight changes that look to help the current team makeup. Yankees fans were dreaming of big names and big moves this offseason and they feel like they got leftover scraps. Here’s the thing, New York is actually a better baseball team. The Yankees are more left handed this season than they were on opening day in 2021. They are much better on defense than what they fielded that day, and they are more athletic and fast. The Yanks have a new look, and

The YouTube video recorded of the Seattle Mariners management informing Julio Rodriguez that he had made the team was exciting and touching to watch. The fact that Seattle management had already contacted his parents and had made arrangements for them to come see Julio play in Minnesota was a very nice touch. The kid has a bright and special smile and an engaging personality. He will be a big star up in Seattle. And he had a special spring training. His exit velocities were terrifying opposing pitchers and his inside-the-park home run several days earlier was electrifying and a special play. And yet, considering that spring training was shortened this season, and the regular season is starting a week late, quite a few players broke through, had amazing springs and are starting with their teams on Opening Day. I didn’t think that the full opportunity for some players would be realized on a shortened schedule but these players have proven me wrong. This is a great rookie crop, especially in the American League, and fantasy baseball players are rejoicing. Bobby Witt Jr. arrived to camp pretty much guaranteed a spot

with his American League Kansas City Royals. He was the odds on early favorite to be Rookie of the Year, and he didn’t disappoint in his spring play or on Opening Day. But Hunter Greene, Bryson Stott, C.J. Abrams, Jeremy Pena and Steven Kwan were not clear favorites to break camp and join their teams on the Opening Day lineup cards. But it is refreshing to see these teams going with youth and not restricting their players’ service time in arbitration eligibility stunts as became so regular in the last few years. The new CBA seems off to a period of good relations between owners and players and it would be nice to have 5 years of labor peace in front of us. I have been writing since October that Bobby Witt Jr. was likely to make Kansas City as their starting 3B and not as their starting shortstop. And clearly organizational need is driving that move. But Bryson Stott was a nonroster invitee to spring training and wasn’t on anyone’s radar to win a job. But WOW, what a performance. The 14th overall draft pick in the 2019 draft with a proven track record at UNLV of having an advanced bat, there were

VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Veterans we have many different kinds of insurance that we hope we never have to use, such as car, home and life insurance policies. In many cases if the employer offers a pension they also include medical coverage. However, when one retires the medical coverage may be removed. Medicare is a policy that stands the most chances of being used. So let’s examine the reasons to have or not have it. Before examining civilian policies we need to look at those offered to us by the government such as Tricare and the VA health care. Tricare does not cover every veteran. It covers the following: a medal of Honor recipient and their spouse and children, and the spouse of a deceased military member. Thus most veterans do not qualify for Tricare. However, veterans who don’t qualify for Tricare are typically eligible for medical services through the VA health system.
VA care for service-connected illness and injuries is free but other care may not be. While the enrollment in the VA hospital care is free there are different levels of copayments for treatment and pharmacies based on your income. It is still more than worth signing up

with them. They issue a picture ID card and you will also be supporting the program and your fellow veterans even if you never use the services. The VA’s enrollment system designates veterans by priority groups.
• Priority Groups 1-3: Service-connected veterans who have received a VA disability rating, former POWs, awarded Purple Heart or Medal of Honor • Priority Groups 4-8: Denote other eligibilities
generally based on medical conditions, combat status, environmental exposure and income. One factor to consider is that even if you use a civilian family doctor you can have the VA doctor renew your medicines at a big savings. They will simply mail them to you when ordered. When you are approaching age 65 you may enroll in Medicare. Parts A and B begin 3 months before you turn 65. If you’re over 65 but still looking to enroll, the open enrollment period is January 1- March 31 every year. It is strongly suggested that you enroll, especially since the VA hospital may be far from your home and you may need emergency care. While the VA is willing to pay for local hospital care when requested, they may not do so if not requested in advance. Medicare can also help cover your medical costs.

Choosing the right electronic equipment for your boating adventures is key to having a safe and enjoyable time on the water. The right setup will be easy for you to operate, reliable, and suited to your particular needs. In this article, I’ll give you a broad overview on what factors you should consider. When selecting a GPS/ chartplotter, the first consideration should be the size of the unit. I recommend the largest screen you can fit. We need to look at how and where it will be mounted. It must be effortless to view, easy to reach, and not obstruct your view. After choosing a chartplotter, you will need a transducer. This can be thru-hull, in-hull, or transom-mount. The transmit power of your transducer will be dictated by your cruising or fishing conditions. Make sure that you take all your needs into consideration: speed, depth, etc. The next essential piece of equipment that you will need is a VHF radio. VHF radios
are one of the most important communication and safety devices for boaters. Offshore anglers and cruisers should consider adding or upgrading to an AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) capable radio. AIS will help identify and track larger vessels. A built-in AIS receiver monitors the position, identity,
course, and speed of other AISequipped vessels, helping you to proactively avoid collisions in crowded waterways. Another useful feature is a hailer function, which can project audible signals when underway in reduced visibility. A compass is an essential feature on any boat. If you are to
lose power to your electronics, your compass can be a huge help in getting you back to dock. Resist the temptation to ignore its value. A radar is a very useful piece of equipment. It helps you to locate targets that can’t be seen, in reduced visibility conditions, like darkness and fog. Your radar
affords you numerous benefits including collision avoidance, weather monitoring, and enhanced situational awareness. In general larger vessels can benefit from an Open Array style (exposed radar antenna that rotates) while smaller boats can use the dome-style. Choosing a brand of electronics is a very important decision. Research the brands you are considering. You should factor the price point, ease of use, software update capability, whether maps are installed, and warranty. You’ll also want to make sure that the brand you are buying is compatible with the equipment you already own. Networking those devices can get complicated and require expensive add-ons, if you’re not careful with your research. The best way to ensure that you are choosing the right equipment for your situation is to contact an ABYC certified marine electrician, who will make the process simple.

Joint Tenants with Rights of Survivorship Explained their portion of the property to their own beneficiaries.
When you buy a real estate with someone in New York State there are three ways you could take title: (i) as tenants in common; (ii) as joint tenants with rights of survivorship; or (iii) if married, as tenants by the entirety. The word “tenants” refers to individuals who are co-owners and not to be confused with tenants in the context of a lease. A tenancy in common (TIC) is when multiple people own different portions of the property. In TIC co-owners are not required to own equal shares or bear equal financial responsibilities for the property. When one of the tenants dies, their share is conveyed to their own respective heirs and not to the other tenants. Each tenant can freely transfer their interest to a third party without the consent of the other tenant. Joint tenants with rights of survivorship (JTWROS) is ownership by two or more individuals who have equal rights to the property while alive and survivorship rights at death. Rights of survivorship means that when one owner dies the

entire ownership interest transfers to the surviving owners. This survivorship right is the main benefit of structuring this type of ownership. It allows the surviving co-owner(s) to gain title and control over the property without the need to go through probate proceedings. In New York, if the parties are not married and rights of survivorship are not specified in the title documents, tenancy in common is presumed. When spouses take title to real estate, New York law presumes that they own the property with
rights of survivorship. When married, rights of survivorship is called tenants by the entirety. When one spouses passes away, the property passes automatically to the survivor, avoiding probate. An advantage is that creditors cannot put a lien on property owned by a couple as tenants by the entirety. A married couple can opt out of JTWROS by expressly purchasing the property as tenants in common. Tenancy by the entirety cannot be altered except by mutual consent. What if you took title with
someone as JTWROS but later no longer wish for that someone to inherit your share? One owner can sever the joint tenancy without a consent of another tenant by transferring their interest in the property to a third party or recording a deed evincing such intent. This turns the JTWROS into a tenancy in common, which has less creditor protection. Creditors can place liens on the debtor’s part of the property because the co-owners no longer own an equal and undivided share as they do with a JTWROS. But each owner is then free to devise

What if one owner in either a tenancy in common or joint tenancy with rights of survivorship wants to the sell the entire property? The sale of the entire property interest to a third party requires the consent of all joint tenants. If disagreement arises regarding ownership, use or sale of the property, the only option is a legal action known as partition so that a judge can order the sale of the property. If one owner insists on selling, the court is likely to order a partition sale. The decision on how to take title to real estate depends on individual circumstances. Each ownership structure has its pros and cons. TIC is often used by business partners when purchasing an investment property. Parents often own property with children by JTWROS. The implications of joint tenancy versus tenancy in common should be considered. Fog!

Anybody notice the intense fog we had on several days this season? “Can’t see my hand in front of my face” kind of stuff… For those of a more scientificbent, fog that forms when water is warmer than the air is called “steam” fog (Fall). Think of that pot of spaghetti water you are boiling. Fog that forms when the water is colder than the air is called “advection” fog (Spring). There is a third kind of fog called “radiation” fog. That is the fog that you see float in across the backyard or linger in a dip in the country road… But fog is fog. You can’t see the land or the buoys or, worse, the bow! What to do? Well, with the dropping price of radar, boats in the mid-20’ range can now be found to have radar aboard. If you do have radar aboard, read the manual and get familiar with gain controls. I won’t waste space in this newspaper lending advice to a skipper that already has a state of the art system aboard on how to use it. Not surprisingly however, the advice below holds for the 65’er with radar and chart overlay capabilities as well as
the skipper in the 17’ open boat with a 90-hp Merc on the stern. When the fog rolls in… Slow down to “a slow bell”, that is, with forward propulsion necessary to maintain steerage, but no greater. Put on life jackets. While underway and making way, that is, engine in gear, give 1 “prolonged” blast on your whistle (4-6 seconds). This is specified in the Navigation Rules, Rule 35(a). In fact, the Rules say “not more than 2 minutes apart.” Let me make it plainer. No LESS than every 2 minutes. While underway but not making way, that is, dead stop on the engine but not at anchor, give 2 “prolonged” blasts, separated by a couple of seconds apart, no less than every 2 minutes. This is Rule 35(b). If necessary to anchor due to visibility (none!), “boats less than 39 feet 4 inches (12 meters) in length may make an efficient sound signal at intervals of not more than two minutes.” In short, it is not specified for boats under 12 meters. Boats larger than 12 meters at anchor must

“That adorable little child that I used to hold in my arms while he drank a bottle gazing into my eyes has grown into a teenager who now won’t even look at me,” says a parent of a high school student. As much as we want to keep our children little for as long as possible, that’s just not possible. Every family encounters problems between parents and teenagers. Each family situation may vary greatly but there are some common areas where teens and parents find the most conflict. On the top of the list is “asserting independence”. “What do you mean they have a mind of their own? My child used to just listen to me and do what I asked of them,” states another parent of a high school student. “Now we just butt heads constantly.” Your child is growing up. No. He/She is not an adult yet, however, your teen is striving to learn how to become an adult and navigate the world without parental demands. Teens want to control parts of their lives by making their own choices with fashion, hair styles, music,

communicating with other boats but you do want to get in out of the fog if you can. How? Don’t, as some old chestnuts might advise, hug the shore. As the fog intensifies and you draw closer and closer to shore, you know what will happen. Of far more danger, don’t “hug the shore” when you are outside the Inlet. If you get caught in the surf line (see 5 above), you will be capsized and now there is imminent threat to life. If you can’t see, you must stop, drop the hook, sound your warning horn as specified

What if you disagree with your child’s choices? Should this turn into a power struggle where, because you are the parent, your child must make only choices that you agree with? I remember a parent who did not like that his son had long hair. The son refused to cut his hair. All the guys wore long hair. It was the style. But the father saw it as being feminine and was enraged over it. The father went to his son’s bedroom one night while he was sleeping and cut off his son’s hair. This action caused irreparable damage in their relationship for many years. Time wasted. They could have shared many wonderful moments together instead of “hating” each other if the situation had been handled differently. Each generation has its own type of music. I don’t know of any parent that actually loves the music that his/her child listens to. My parents did not like my music. I did not like my children’s music. And I’m sure my grandparents did not like my

But if you can’t see past the bow and you are underway and making way, you are in extreme danger of having a collision at sea. If you have some visibility, see #’s 1 and 2 above. The slower speed will help in another way as well – you can hear better. Lastly, if you have those canisters of compressed gas as your boat’s horn/whistle, you will likely run out of compressed air before you run out of fog. Think about getting a simple whistle. Get the “pea-less” kind in case you have to worry about your spittle freezing one cold and foggy day… and blow, baby, blow…! 3. Compromise rather than demand. Come up with a solution that you can both live with. 4. Promote positive behavior. Your teen needs your positive reinforcement even more now than when they were babies. Compliment him/her often. Let him/her know how much you love him/her through words and actions.

Calmly open the line of communication. Listen to your child’s point of view and then have them listen to yours. No name calling. No cursing.
5. Know the big difference between healthy and unhealthy behaviors. Any unhealthy or unsafe behavior should be addressed immediately via family conversation, professional help, help from teachers/counselors. This is where, as a parent, you don’t look the other way. It does not come with a book, as the saying goes, but you are writing your own family book. Make each chapter one full of beautiful family memories. There will be ups and downs. That’s why chapters end, and new ones begin.

Time With Animals Can Spark an Interest in Reading
We all know how important it is to encourage our children to read, but once they are reading independently, it can be difficult to keep them interested when there are so many other distractions in the modern world. Sometimes, getting a child engaged takes a little something extra to spark them into wanting to read for themselves. A really great motivator for young readers is our program “Tail Waggin’ and Readin’ Fun”, which brings certified therapy dogs to the library children’s department. Children who come to see the reading dogs are given a fifteen-minute
time slot to snuggle up and read to the gentle pups. This has been a really popular program in the past and the library is thrilled to have it back. “Tail-waggin’ and Readin’ Fun” allows kids to practice reading skills and reading aloud to a creature who never corrects their reading or judges them if they read slowly. Positive interactions like that can also lead into pursuing their curiosity through reading. Are there fiction stories about dogs they might like? Do they want to learn about dog breeds or therapy dogs? Ask a librarian for help finding a book, any time. This program does not require registration, just stop
in between 4:30 and 6:00 any Tuesday in February for a visit with our furry friends. Our other library creatures can spark curiosity that can turn into reading as well. We also have two delightful Northern Leopard Frogs as guests, and on display next to them are some books ready to be checked out. There are other non-fiction as well as fiction books about frogs for all ages just waiting to be discovered. What questions might your child have that can be answered in a book? Are there any funny frog picture books? Ask a librarian and hop down the path toward reading for fun.

Angels, Good and Bad
OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE An angel is a pure spirit and therefore has no matter. Each angel is an individual with a mind and a will like ours. But angels are of a nature higher than ours. They are often sent by God for certain tasks on earth. In fact, the word angel means “one who is sent” or “messenger.” The oldest references to angels in the Old Testament might leave us wondering if angels are separate beings, or does the phrase “messenger of God” merely mean God? But in the later part of the Old Testament and in the New Testament it becomes entirely clear that they are distinct creatures. The angels were not created with the vision of God. If they had had that, sin would have been impossible. But God gave the angels free will. He gave them a command which some obeyed and some, led by Lucifer, rebelled against. Those who disobeyed were fixed in evil and became the fallen angels. When we sin, our intelligence is limited by the material part of our intellect, our brains. Our material brain is much
less powerful than the spiritual intelligence of our souls. This means that we seldom see things as fully as possible all at once. But an angel has no such limitation and so sees everything as fully as possible all at once. So, an angel cannot go back on his decision and say “I see things differently now, I wish I had not done that.” The fallen angels still keep the great powers natural to a pure spirit. They can do things that seem like miracles to us. Fixed in evil, the devil and his followers are on a campaign to seduce us and harm us spiritually. Their aim is to lead us from the service of God. St. Peter warns us, “Be calm and watch, for your enemy the devil goes about seeking whom he may devour.” The good angels are sent to guide and protect us. They too have great powers. Each of us has a guardian angel. This is implied in Scripture and is found in the constant tradition of the Church. In chapter 12 of the Acts of the Apostles, after Peter was delivered from prison by an angel, the disciples said in

astonishment “It was his angel.” Our guardian angels are able to put good thoughts into our minds, and to protect us. Psalm 91 says: “He will command His angels about you, to guard you in all your ways.” They never stop
praying for us and they intercede for us by presenting our prayers before God. Clearly it is only good sense to venerate our guardian angels, to cultivate a relationship with them, and to ask for their help.
God said in Exodus 23, “Behold I am sending an angel ahead of you, to guard you and bring you to a place I have prepared. Listen to his voice, and do not rebel against him, for my name is in him.”
