Jake’s 58 & Northwell Health Team Up to Provide Vital Medical Assistance to Ukraine

On Tuesday, March 22nd, Suffolk County Presiding Officer Kevin McCaffrey and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, along with county elected officials, Suffolk OTB President/CEO, Tony Pancella, and executives from Northwell Health, held an emergency aid press conference with Long Island Ukrainian leaders at Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel in Islandia. Suffolk OTB, which operates the casino, made a $10,000 donation to the Northwell Health Ukraine Relief Fund to send vital medical supplies to hospitals in the embattled nation. The check was accepted by Donna Moravick, Executive Director for South Shore University Hospital, on behalf of Northwell Health President and CEO, Michael Dowling.

Sheriff Toulon Outlines Agenda for Second Term and Announces Major New Initiatives On Friday, March 18, 2022, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office held a formal inauguration ceremony marking the second term of Dr. Errol D. Toulon, Jr. as Suffolk County Sheriff. The ceremony was held at the Van Nostrand Theater on the campus of Suffolk County Community College – Grant Campus. Sheriff Toulon was given the oath of office by New York State Attorney General Letitia James. The event was rescheduled from its original date in December due to COVID-19. During his inaugural address, Sheriff Toulon outlined his agenda for his second term which included an announcement about a firstof-its-kind intelligence network

spearheaded by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Called the In Custody Intelligence Network, this jail/ prison intelligence sharing network will enable the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office to have a greater footprint with law enforcement partners, and more specifically,

with corrections professionals in the jail and prison system in New York State and across state lines. Former Congressman Peter King will assist with this network in an advisory capacity. Sheriff Toulon stated, “Recently, I was appointed by the Major County Sheriffs of America

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Makes Fentanyl, Heroin and Crack Arrest

On Friday, March 25, 2022, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Suffolk County Sheriff’s Deputies were traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway, east of exit 67 in a marked unit when they observed a 2020 Mazda bearing Georgia license plates traveling at a high rate of speed with two male occupants inside. Deputies stopped the vehicle, and while approaching the vehicle, the vehicle sped

away. It exited the Long Island Expressway at exit 65 and crashed into a telephone pole at the corner of Falcon Ave. in Medford. The front seat passenger, Edward Smith, 20, of Yaphank, NY, fled on foot and was apprehended a short distance away. The driver fled the scene and is still at large. A quantity of drugs including over 3 grams of Fentanyl, over 3 grams of Heroin, over 6 grams of Crack Cocaine, 14 suboxone pills, a small quantity of marijuana, a stun gun, and $3,240.00 in cash were discovered in the vehicle and on the scene. Passenger Edward Smith was charged with: three counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 3rd and one count of Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 5th. The vehicle has been impounded and an investigation is ongoing.

traffic stop for speeding can turn into a dangerous situation for the deputies and the public when the driver attempts to flee. In this case, thankfully no one was seriously injured and Deputies took dangerous drugs off the streets. I thank

John Kennedy Holds Campaign Kick-off Over 200 people attended the campaign kick-off for Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy last week. Kennedy, of Smithtown, is a former Suffolk County Legislator who just completed his first 4-year term as Comptroller. As the County’s fiscal watchdog Kennedy stressed the important role that his office and staff play in protecting the taxpayer’s funds. Numerous labor and county unions attended the campaign kick-off and pledged their support of Comptroller Kennedy.

Joe DeStefano Hosts Women’s Self Defense Class In honor of “Women’s Empowerment Month” Assemblyman Joe DeStefano hosted a Women’s Self Defense Class. There was no fee for this event. Construction of Hospital Road Bridge Rebuild to Begin

Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) and Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro were joined by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Brookhaven Town Councilman Neil Foley, Long Island Community Hospital President and CEO Richard Margulis, North Patchogue Fire District Commissioner Jack Blaum, Long Island Contractors Association Deputy Executive Director Sheryl Buro, South Country Ambulance Company Chief Greg Miglino, and local first responders and labor leaders in announcing the start of construction for the long awaited rebuilding of Hospital Road Bridge. “Hospital Road Bridge is a critical artery for Suffolk County residents and a vital lifeline for law enforcement and first responders traveling to Long Island Community Hospital and the North Patchogue Fire Department,” said Congressman Zeldin. “Being that this bridge has been deemed ‘functionally obsolete’, the start of construction for this project is excellent news for the entire community. The integrity of our roads, overpasses and bridges is not only critical for

public safety, but a linchpin of job creation and economic growth. I am thrilled that we are well on our way to getting this much needed infrastructure and safety improvement completed for our residents.” “When Congressman Zeldin and I met to discuss infrastructure priorities during his first term in office, he understood we could not possibly afford to fund the replacement of the Hospital Road Bridge locally. Soon after, he introduced the SAFE Bridges Act of 2015, enabling 80 percent of the project to be federally funded,” said Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro. “Congressman Zeldin successfully secured more than $20 million, along with another $4 million in state funds, from then Senator Croci, for the replacement of this dangerous, narrow span. I’m very proud that the Town of Brookhaven has been able to shepherd this project through many years of designs, approvals and the final design phase. I am confident we have put together a plan which addresses the needs of our first responders, medical facilities and the general public. Improving Long

Island’s infrastructure, which has not kept pace with our growing population, continues to be one of my main priorities.” In 2015, the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) declared Hospital Road Bridge “functionally obsolete,” meaning it could not handle its traffic demand. The following year, a funding agreement was reached

for a $26 million project to widen and make major repairs to Hospital Road Bridge. Eighty percent of the project is federally funded, which was made possible by the infusion of federal money to Suffolk County from Congressman Zeldin’s bipartisan SAFE Bridges Act of 2015 that was signed into law as part of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation

(FAST) Act in December 2015. Six years later, NYSDOT awarded the Hospital Road Bridge project’s construction contract to DeFoe Corporation of Mount Vernon, New York, for approximately $22.8 million. With construction beginning, the project is on schedule to be completed by the end of 2023.

William Floyd Robotics Wins Industrial Design Award, Gears Up for LI Regional Competition

The William Floyd Robotics Team #287 recently competed at the New York Tech Valley Regional in Albany against 40 other talented robotics teams from around the country and the world. Team 287’s aspiring engineers made it to the quarterfinals with a 10th place finish, and earned the Industrial Design Award in the process. The Industrial Design Award, sponsored by General Motors, is presented to the team that best demonstrates industrial design principles, striking a balance between form, function and aesthetics. As part of the challenge, students and their mentors designed and built the robot within a six-week timeframe. The focus for this year’s challenge was to “address the

global challenges related to building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization while fostering innovation.” According to the design specifications for the 2021-22 season, First Forward presented by Qualcomm, teams were challenged with designing robots that focus on the shipment of packages in rural and urban areas, and on disaster relief delivery and high-tech air transit in an effort to better connect and grow communities and economies around the world. The list of students participating in the New York Tech Valley Regional include: Co-captains Samantha Friedrich and Tessa-Kaya Bender (lead driver), Graciela Aguilar, Devin Brigandi, Alice Chen, Vincenzo

Tuttle Avenue Students Celebrate Bus Drivers Students at Tuttle Avenue Elementary School in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District in the Tuttle Cares Club, led by adviser Nicole Rau, recently celebrated the school’s bus drivers as part of Bus Driver Appreciation Week. As part of the week, students demonstrated daily acts of kindness to recognize the hard work of their bus drivers. During the week students gave bus drivers balloons and bags filled with assorted small gifts, and the entire school building made cards to hand to them.

Colonial Youth and Family Services hosted its annual Casino Night Fundraiser on Friday March 25, 2022. The event was held at Rock Hill Country Club in Manorville. Many who attended were happy to be back at the annual event that hadn’t taken place since 2019 due to COVID. Raffles prizes were given to winners, including the reigning

Texas Hold ‘Em champion, Deputy Town Supervisor Dan Panico, who attends every year and has won the poker tournament, every year he has participated. Colonial was also able to swear in their newest board member Ken Olivo. Colonial thanks the sponsors and attendees of the event for making it a successful fundraiser for their community not for profit agency.

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN Lee Koppelman was an important, indeed pivotal figure in Suffolk County history. I knew Lee, who died last week, for a very long time. We first connected in 1962 at a meeting on the effort to create a Fire Island National Seashore. Lee had become the planning director of Suffolk County two years earlier and was in favor of the Seashore initiative. My first “big” story as a journalist in Suffolk was writing article after article about the four-lane highway Robert Moses was pushing to build on Fire Island and what was being proposed as an alternative, preserving Fire Island as a National Seashore. Most officials feared crossing the powerful and vindictive Moses. But Koppelman was a courageous, stand-up person. A Fire Island National Seashore became a reality in 1964. Koppelman came into Suffolk County government on the winds of reform. In the 1950s, Suffolk government and many local governments were here wracked by what was to be named the “Suffolk Scandals”—a decade of investigations of corruption led by a succession of special state prosecutors. The “Suffolk Scandals” led to adoption of

Klein succeeded Dennison as county executive, and Koppelman would work closely with him on the pioneering Suffolk County Farmland Preservation Program which was to be replicated all over the U.S.

a charter system of government to be led by an elected county executive. In 1960 H. Lee Dennison moved into that post. Decades before, Dennison, an engineer, came to Suffolk from Hornell in upstate New York to work in the then-Suffolk Highway Department. He was ousted after writing a report saying Suffolk government was so mired in partisan politics that it was “doing nothing to encourage adequate county planning.” Koppelman and Dennison first met when Dennison attended a presentation in Hauppauge of a “Hauppauge Comprehensive Plan” put together by Koppelman. Hauppauge was a sitting duck for intense development with the Long Island Expressway and a spur of the Northern State Parkway nearing it, Veterans Memorial Highway through it, county government buildings rising, and the once rural area eyed for commercial and industrial construction. Dennison was impressed by Koppelman’s blueprint to deal with the looming development of Hauppauge in what he believed was a sensible and balanced way. He hired him as the county’s first planning director—to try to do the same for all of Suffolk County. It was a time, Lee Koppelman

would later recall, that Suffolk County was the “fastest growing county in the United States” in population and economically. At a significant financial loss, he left his landscape architecture practice and accepted the position. His first chief concern was the preservation of open space in Suffolk. Back then, he would note, no land in Suffolk had been preserved by the county as open space other than Smith Point Park. And, he said, if action wasn’t taken developers would be “paving over”—as he put it—all of Suffolk County. He defined planning as working toward “better human habitation.” Koppelman

impressed by the writings of Lewis Mumford which he was first introduced to from his books at the public library in Astoria, where Koppelman grew up. Mumford’s targets included suburban sprawl— what Suffolk faced. Referring to Levittown on Long Island, in his 1961 book, “The City in History,” Mumford wrote about “a multitude of uniform, unidentifiable houses, lined up inflexibly, at uniform distances, on uniform roads…inhabited by people of the same class…This is the ultimate effect of the suburban escape in our time…” Mumford had been a leader of the Regional Planning Association of America. Koppelman’s first major report as

Richard Murdocco, a former student of Koppelman’s at Stony Brook University, where he later became director of its Center for Regional Policy Studies, has related: “He told me that he would never let anyone take him out to lunch, because he didn’t want to owe anyone anything, or give the perception that he was being swayed.” Murdocco now teaches at Stony Brook. Koppelman’s degrees included a Ph.D. in public administration from NYU. Koppelman, who died at 94, was critical in putting a focus on saving the sole source of potable water on which Suffolk depends, its underground water supply. And he cast the light of intelligent planning on so much more. His biggest disappointment was the lack of affordable housing which for so long he pointed to as a huge need in Suffolk.

The Final Four is set and what can we say about the road here except ... wow! The NCAA Tournament always seems to take our breath away, but this year it has done so even more so. St. Peter’s will be the story that everyone remembers, and while it might have struck midnight on the Peacocks, they remain the little team from New Jersey who went further than any other 15 seed in history. Teams like Miami (a 10 seed), Iowa State (an 11 seed), and even Notre Dame, gave their fans thrills of a lifetime. This has been an intense tournament so far ... but there is so much more to come. The story now turns to Coach K and this magical run. The (arguably) greatest coach in college basketball history is still alive and is now the betting favorite to cut down the nets. The Duke Blue Devils are now

+150 to win it all, which is quite the jump up from the 12 to 1 odds they were just before the Sweet 16 began. Dare we say that the hated Duke actually now has the public pulling for them? What is even more intriguing than the Duke run to potentially end a storied career with a storybook ending is who stands in front of them. They will have to go through the hated North Carolina Tar Heels and the biggest rivalry in college basketball. The Heels and Blue Devils have met up over 250 times in their history, yet never in the NCAA tournament, and now this will be in the Final Four. The Final Four matchup where their greatest coach’s career is on the line. Not only that but UNC also ruined Coach K’s final home game by beating Duke on their home floor in the season’s finale. To

All of the public will be looking at Coach K and the Heels clash, but on the other side we also have two outstanding coaches going for their trip to glory. Jay Wright and Bill Self have resumes to compare to just about anyone in college basketball, and both want to add another title to their ledger. Bill Self is already a Hall of Fame coach and in his 17 years he has won 15 regular season titles in the Big 12, but only one national championship. Jay Wright (formerly of Hofstra) has made Villanova a powerhouse. His reign includes 3 Final Four’s in the past 6 years with two titles. We have had some great moments so far, but it seems like it’s only the beginning with a wild weekend ahead.

The ripple effect of some trades is not always seen right away. And there is certainly more than a few raised eyebrows when a trade happens right after spring training camps open. So this past Thursday there was an interesting trade which happened between the Colorado Rockies and the Toronto Blue Jays. They exchanged cash considerations and Randall Grichuk was sent to Colorado for Raimel Tapia and Adrian Pinto. Essentially the deal is a swap of two outfielders. While Grichuk can be a strikeout prone low batting average hitter, he does have significant power which is catching attention in the hitting environment of Coors Field. But there are much deeper implications which we should dive into. For starters, Grichuk is owed over $10 million dollars for each of the next two seasons. For a team that has done such a good job of developing talent in house this is very important to have the freedom to re-sign their players. But away from Coors Field it seems almost certain that Tapia has decreased allure and

he could become more of a 4th outfielder. With Toronto having traded away a starting outfielder and not getting back as capable a bat in Tapia it now seems likely that Toronto will start Teoscar Hernandez in the outfield. Where do they replace Teoscar’s at bats as the DH. The next best bat on the entire team is catcher Alejandro Kirk and this guy can swing the bat real well. Kirk caught people’s eye in spring training of 2021 and I rostered in a mixed dynasty league which uses two (2) catchers. I am certainly excited about the possibility of getting him more at bats. For the NL-only leagues that I play in it is also an exciting opportunity to plug in a decent power hitter now playing 82 games this year in Coors Field. Ripple effects are amazing to track and the smart fantasy baseball player is always thinking like a chess player. Take the Kenley Jansen signing as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves. Jansen has been a dominant closer in LA for over a decade and some fantasy players have been thinking of preparing for life without him. And on the surface, it seems to

put Will Smith out of a closing spot in Atlanta. And while that may be true that his saves may be headed downwards, he is a viable candidate to get a lot of Holds for the Dodgers if you play in a format which counts that stat. But I find the question of who is now going to close for the Dodgers to be much more interesting. While Blake Treinen has been announced as the heir apparent, you better keep an eye on Brusdar Graterol. It is true that Treinen

saved 38 games for the 2018 Oakland A’s, but he never saved more than 16 games in any other season and his career WHIP of 1.23 is not the ideal profile for a closer. Brusdar Graterol on the other hand throws a hard sinking fastball that he averaged 100 mph with last season. And he seems to throw it so effortlessly. The best part about Graterol is his 23 year old profile. This is a rising talent for the Dodgers, and if I see Treinen blow a few saves in April, it wouldn’t be the worst idea to put

So you have time to make changes if you don’t come out of your draft with good closers who will be getting saves. If you come out of your draft with more than 3 guys in line to get saves, I don’t mind using ALL OF THEM and banking some saves early in the season. Remember, a save earned in April stays in your totals for the whole season. I love to bank stats early in the season, and down the stretch I can use more starting pitchers if I’m lagging in strikeouts, quality starts or even wins. Though wins are never certain and can be an elusive stat. Every spring, there is a pitcher touting a new pitch, or a pitcher who adds a mile or two on to his fastball. Pay close attention for these things. Last year it correctly led you to Robbie Ray and Kevin Gausman. Next week we will give you our update on some of these pitchers who are showing signs in spring training that will pay big dividends in the summer.

Anger is a helpful emotion for action and motivation. If something is not right, being angry can make us do something to change the circumstances. However, it’s important to deal with it in a positive way. Uncontrolled anger can take a toll on both your health and your relationships. Keeping your temper in check can be challenging. Use simple anger management tips—from taking a timeout to using “I” statements-to stay in control. Failing to manage your anger can led to a variety of problems like saying things you regret, threatening your coworkers, developing health problems, or even resorting to physical violence. Think before you speak. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to say something you’ll later

regret. Take a few moments to collect your thoughts before saying anything—and allow others involved in the situation to do the same. It takes at least two for an argument, so if you don’t argue it cannot occur. As soon as you’re thinking clearly, express your frustration in an assertive but non-confrontational way. State your concerns and needs clearly and directly, without hurting others or trying to control them. Instead of focusing on what made you mad, work on resolving the issue at hand. Remind yourself that anger won’t fix anything and might even make it worse. Avoid criticizing or placing blame, which usually only increases the tension. Use “I” statements to describe the problem. For example, say, “I’m upset that this or that has happened,” or “I don’t understand how that occurred.” Avoid sarcasm, though, as it can hurt feelings

All boaters eventually want to add or replace a DC component on their boat. There are factors that must be considered when adding or replacing old components. What is the voltage required to operate the new part? Most small- to medium-sized boats are 12 volt systems. Manufacturers always provide the voltage requirement on the piece of equipment. The next consideration is the amount of amperage the new component needs to operate efficiently. Sometimes this is written on the equipment or in the installation instructions. You will also need to determine if your batteries can handle the increased amperage draw. After this you will need to consider fuse size and wire size. Fuse size is almost always dictated by the manufacturer.

Wire size and type are the next critical decision. When determining wire size you must measure the path to where the new piece of equipment will be mounted,

then double that number. Blue Sea Systems Circuit Wizard is an app that can be downloaded from the app store to aid in determining wire size, voltage drop, and

if wire is being run through the engine room, which will change the wire sizing. There are two categories of voltage drop: 3% and 10%. 3% voltage drop is used for

critical components like bilge pumps, navigation systems, and communications equipment. Always use marine-grade stranded wire. Never use household solid strand wire, since this can easily break under vibration or strain. Finally, make sure that all connections to your panel and new equipment are made with marine-grade ring or forked spade connectors. Heat shrink connectors should also be used in potentially wet or damp areas. Wires should be supported at least every 18” where accessible. The best way to ensure that your new equipment is fully compatible, safe, and reliable, is to consult with an ABYC certified marine electrician, who understands your boat’s electrical systems.

Fixing an Old Trust to Avoid Capital Gains Tax for Heirs

My husband died in 2006 and stock worth $500,000 was put into a credit shelter trust that terminates at my death and goes to our children. Now the stock is worth $3 million dollars. Is there any way to avoid capital gains tax when I pass away?

There is likely a way to get the stepped up basis at your death by fixing the credit shelter trust so that it is included in your taxable estate. So long as you are under the NYS and federal estate tax exemption amount, it is worth it to avoid the capital gains. One of the most potentially disruptive proposals put forth last year by Congress was the elimination of the tax-free basis step up at death. Luckily for many of our clients, the legislation was never enacted. People all over the country benefit from basis-step up when they inherit low basis property which they can turn around and sell without paying taxes on the gain. Under current law, taxpayers pay taxes on capital gains when they sell an asset for a profit and realize a gain. For example, a person buys a house for $100,000 (basis) and twenty years later it is worth $1 million dollars. Capital gains tax is owed when the house is sold. The amount of capital gains tax depends on the owner’s income tax bracket – ranging from

pass through the surviving spouse’s estate so heirs avoid capital gains. This similarly applies to existing irrevocable beneficiary trusts that are commonly created for adult children.

25% to 39% in New York State. If the owners of the house in the above example held onto the property until their death, the asset’s tax basis is “stepped up” to its fair market value on date of death. Those who inherit the asset then own the asset at its current fair market value and only have to pay capital gains on any further increases in value. This is the reason estate planning attorneys warn clients never to “gift” their home to a child; gifts have “carry over” basis from the donor and do not get the step up. When the child sells the gifted property, they have to pay capital gains tax. There is a push-pull between stepped up basis and estate tax. In order to get the stepped-up basis, the assets must pass through the decedent’s estate. Once assets pass through a decedent’s estate, there is potential estate tax. However, the federal estate and gift tax exemption is at an all-time high of $12.06 million per person and NYS estate tax is $6.1 million. This allows for stepped up basis planning that may not have been available when you

With 38 years at the IRS, she began in Puerto Rico as a clerk. Over the years, she held leadership and management positions, including Senior Program Manager for the Puerto Rico call site. A native New Yorker, Adeline returned in 2013, to

take on this senior leadership position in Holtsville. As Planning and Analysis Chief, she plays a vital role ensuring the directorate is equipped and prepared to deliver top notch services to America’s taxpayers. Alisa McMorris On September 30th, 2018, 12 year old Andrew McMorris was hiking with his Boy Scout Troop when a drunk driver plowed into the line of scouts, severely injuring 3 scouts and killing Andrew. Alisa’s world changed in an instant and her family was completely shattered. Through her despair she found hope in creating a foundation with her husband John and daughter Arianna to honor Andrew’s passions including singing, dancing, music, art, theater, aviation, and of course scouting, so that they’d have a vehicle to change from parenting Andrew to parenting his legacy. Their mission was to create positive change and recognize the achievements of unsung heroes, that embody Andrew’s spirit through scholarships, grants, and leadership awards. The Andrew McMorris Foundation was launched just 6 months after losing Andrew on his first birthday in heaven in 2019. In the organization’s first 3 years they have presented over 50 awards to deserving young leaders, and was the speaker at multiple events including the Suffolk County District

Brandy Feliu A nurse for 24 years and a nurse educator for 20 years, Ms. Feliu is an exceptionally talented and dedicated nurse leader. She has demonstrated this through the execution of several interdisciplinary collaborations to improve patient care practices with multiple departments within our organization. In her current role as the Assistant Vice President for Nursing Professional Development, her responsibilities include administration, coordination and provision of all Nursing Professional Development activities within the organization.

She diligently maintains collaborative relationships with schools of Nursing affiliates. Under her leadership, Mather Hospital developed and implemented a nurse residency program which received national recognition and accreditation by the ANCC© American Nurses Credentialing Center. Cassy Caputo Cassy Caputo is the proud mother of 3 children-Keith, Briana, and James, and in 2021 was blessed to become “Nana” to her first grandchild, Kevin Joseph. After a 32-year career in the Purchasing Division of the Town of Brookhaven, Cassy retired in 2012 as the Director of Purchasing. For 22 years, as her children grew and progressed through the school systems, Cassy was involved in volunteering with various local organizations. Cassy was also a former board member of the Moriches Community Center before leaving to help her eldest

son Keith found Helping Makes U Happy, Inc. This organization, which demonstrates how every human is capable of making a difference through volunteering, began in Cassy’s garage in 2015 and in 2019 was named a “rising star” among Long Island non-profits at the Long Island Imagine Awards. As the co-founder and chairperson of Helping Makes U Happy, Cassy is honored to be able to help hundreds of people in communities across Brookhaven and Long Island, even reaching out of state when needs arise. “The pandemic never slowed us down,” says Cassy. “We just worked harder, in different, safer ways. We connected with other non-profits and were able to help more people than ever!” In 2017 Cassy received the SCOPE award for community service through a nomination by the Center Moriches School District. Dr. Crysten BlabyHaas Dr. Crysten Blaby-Haas is an earlycareer scientist at BNL, where she co-founded and leads BNL’s Quantitative Plant Science Initiative, a multi-million dollar, multi-institute, research initiative focused on the discovery of gene function towards the development of sustainable bioenergy. Crysten received her PhD from the University of Florida with Prof. Valerie de Crecy-Lagard. In Prof. de Crecy-Lagard’s group, Crysten became fascinated by bacterial genomics and the challenge of predicting and testing gene function. After graduating from UF in 2011, Crysten joined the group of Prof. Sabeeha Merchant at UCLA and was awarded a prestigious NIH postdoctoral fellow. At UCLA, Crysten’s research interests expanded to include gene function discovery in plants and algae. In 2015, she began her independent career at BNL where

She is responsible, along with her fellow deputies and correction officers on the Anti-Trafficking Team, for in-service training as well as education of new officers on the fundamentals of human trafficking, how to recognize trafficking and how to respond to it and its victims. The Unit refers victims to and works closely with advocacy groups in efforts to assist victims on their road to recovery and to support them throughout their long-term journey as survivors. Erin continues to spread awareness of the trafficking menace by holding informational presentations to groups throughout Suffolk County. She is a member of the newly formed Suffolk County Anti-Trafficking Initiative Task Force.

Kimberly Herrera Kimberly Herrera, MD is originally from Long Island. She studied biology at the University of Delaware, medical school in Boston University, OBGYN residency in Pennsylvania Hospital, and completed her Maternal- Fetal Medicine fellowship at Mount Sinai Roosevelt Hospital in NYC (now known as Mount Sinai West). Her interest in women’s health care started early in her career and has evolved during her training. Currently Dr. Herrera is the Clinical Associate Professor and the Program Director for the Maternal- Fetal Medicine Fellowship Program at Stony Brook Department of OB-GYN. Her interests include diabetes in pregnancy and opioid use in pregnancy. In addition to clinical duties, she

At Sachem Central School District’s Tamarac Elementary, 2nd grade teacher Lauren Rodden is recognized as an outstanding, dedicated, student-focused professional, who makes strong connections with both her pupils and their families. Possessing excellent classroom management skills, Lauren is credited with providing a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment for all. A building leader, role model, and best “go-to person”, Lauren facilitates and organizes many of the school’s assemblies, activities, and celebrations that highlight students’ character and spotlight student achievement. She also attends numerous community events outside of the school day in support of the students and their families. A long-time union representative, Lauren has for many years helped keep her school

Tatiana Garcia Tatiana Garcia is a junior at Farmingdale State College, majoring in Bioscience on track to becoming a Physician within Emergency Medicine. Since she was an adolescent she has always been an individual that has cared for others and their well-being. Her ultimate goal would be to provide health care to underserved populations. Tatiana currently serves her community as a member of the 106th Rescue Wing, Air National Guard. She single-handedly supports a team of over 50 rescue pilots and aircrew. Her vast personnel responsibilities include squadron accountability, tracking and monitoring all squadron readiness items, and providing immediate support and assistance to the squadron commander

Today Mrs. Leonardo’s custom hand painted Christmas balls are her specialty and are in 11 foreign countries and at least 10 states. Her Christmas balls are now sought after and they depict both old and new scenes of Suffolk County, New York and most especially of historic Bellport. Today these works can be acquired at Circa Something Gallery which is located in the heart of Downtown Bellport at 139 South Country Road.

After retirement and some years of caregiving were behind me, I returned to the town of Brookhaven where I’d lived at various times in the past. I was drawn to Dress for Success 9 years ago because it seemed like a fun place to volunteer. I’ve stayed because the

Judith Betts Judith ‘Judi’ Betts had her career cut short due to a horrific car accident in 1972. Owing to her recovery at Mather Hospital in Port Jefferson, she credited their services. She was determined to pay back to the ones who helped her, this initiated her career as being an auxiliary volunteer. The same year, she joined ‘One Enchanted Evening planning committee’. It was at Mather that Judi met the love of her life, Earle F. Betts, VC of the hospital. Together they worked at Mather Hospital and Port Jefferson Rotary. In 1979, having strong influence in Long Island’s wine world, she became the founding member in the Wine Industry. She served on the Long Island Wine Council and received an invitation to join Governor Mario Cuomo’s task force on the New York wine industry. Judi has been honored as Woman of the Year by the New York Wine & amp; Grape Foundation. Judi’s many philanthropic efforts were utilized at Mather Hospital, Port Jefferson Rotary, Good Shepherd Hospice, St. Charles Hospital, United Way of West End, the American Heart Association, St. Mary’s Schools, Ward Melville Heritage Organization and The Long Island Museum. Her efforts were proven by the honors she’s received including the James E. West Fellowship Award from The Boy Scouts of America, the Paul

Harris Fellow Award from the Port Jefferson Rotary; Woman of the Year from The Three Village Herald and the distinguished Theodore Roosevelt Award and 1st Annual Legacy Foundations Award from Mather Hospital. Through the Rotary, Judi and Earle have hosted 7 Rotary Exchange students from all over the world. Her international hosting continues through SUNY Stony Brook Simon Center and Yang Center by opening her home to visiting physicists and mathematicians from 52 countries worldwide. Judi joined the Executive Board at Boy Scouts of America in 2006 and has served on various committees including the DCAD, golf outing, Heritage Organization, Centennial Committee, Cigar Dinner and the SPARK program which is dearest to her heart.

Happy Trails While Trailering Part I

With the season in hand, we must start thinking about getting the boat from “the hard” and back. Recently, we wrote about commissioning (making ready) the boat for the summer months. And you may recall that we started with making sure that the trailer was capable of safely transporting your boat from the driveway to the boat ramp. This column expands considerably on that. Since this is a topic that can take up lots of space just due to safety precautions, this is part I of a two-part series.

recommendation about the weight displacement of the boat. And that is before you added all that gear. So, trailering is, by its nature, more stressful on the boat than riding at anchor.

Safety First!

So, start with making sure that what the boat sits on isn’t adding to the stress. You don’t want your rollers or bunkers stressing, scratching or gouging the hull. Make sure that the tie-downs (and engine support pole) do not permit the boat to bounce on the trailer. Once all is secure, make some marks or apply some telltales so you can consistently have the boat sit snuggly on her trailer.

Well, that started me thinking about trailering - when you are driving your boat over many types of road (how about those winter-created potholes?) at relatively high speeds. Stresses from over-the-road travel can be more punishing than normal operation. A boat is designed to sit in water, along her waterline. While the manufacturer may even put some markings along the waterline that say, “trailer strap goes here”, nothing “extra” is there – it is simply a mathematical

But first - be sure she is sitting properly in the first place! What does that mean? No more than 7%-10% of the total weight of the boat should be on the trailer “tongue” – the part that attaches the ball and coupler together. This means that a 3,000 pound boat, including engine, cooler, etc, can have no more than 210lbs to 300lbs on the tongue. Well, how do you tell that!? You’ll need a couple of bathroom scales and a strong friend. Each of you stand on the scale(s) while lifting the tongue together. Note the combined weight. Step off, weigh yourselves and subtract... if that comes to more than 300 lbs, the boat is too far forward. If it is less than 210 lbs, it is too far aft. Why is that important? Well, too much weight at the back (too light at the front), will tend to pry your car’s rear tires up. Less traction than designed by the manufacturer! Too much weight on the tongue

When he used to complain to me about it, I said, “If you constantly drove your brand-new car at full speed over a bumpy road, would you be surprised that it might start to shake loose?” He said, “hmm.”

you may see her pass you on the highway. The safety chains are attached and crisscrossed under the coupler to the frame of the tow vehicle. If the ball and coupler were to break apart, the trailer would fall into the chains, which now are a safety net.

Underway, Making Way

Now you’re ready to go. Before going too far, be sure that the lights on the trailer function properly. Remember, each time you come up that boat ramp, your lights have been in (cold) salt water. As have your brakes - so check them too. Drive forward and apply the brakes several times at increasing speeds to determine a safe stopping distance. When you take her out, a fresh water rinse makes a lot of (safety) sense.

Check tires (including spare) and wheel bearings for proper inflation – and remember that the trailer tires are likely to be far smaller than the car or truck tires. This means that they will be spinning faster just to stay in place. Faster equals more stress on the bearings. And don’t forget that the aft-most set of tires have been in salt water at least twice a day when you go boating! Well, that will get you thinking. OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE In July 1984, Russian cosmonauts aboard Soviet Space Station Salyut 7 were on day 155 of their mission. On this the day the group reported seeing strange lights. According to Commander Oleg Atkov and Cosmonauts Vladmir and Leonid Kizim, the space station was completely engulfed in a mesmerizing orange light. The light appeared to enter from outside the space station and bled through an absolutely opaque wall. For a short period of time, the orange light was so bright that it blinded the crew. When their vision returned, each one looked out the portholes for the source of the light, looking for a possible explosion. They were aware that the Salyut 7 had suffered previous fires. What the crew saw was more incomprehensible than the orange light. All of the cosmonauts reported seeing the faces of seven angels who were hovering just outside the space station. They told ground control that their bodies and their faces looked human in appearance but that they

had wings and halos. These beings kept pace with the space station for ten minutes before vanishing. Then there was a second appearance. On day 167 the crew was joined by another team of three cosmonauts from Soyuz T-12 spacecraft. The were Svetlana Savitskaya, Igor Volk, and Vladmir Dzhanibekov. Shortly after these three joined the team, the Salyut 7 was once again engulfed by a warm orange light. The entire crew immediately looked out the portholes and once again saw that they were joined by angelic beings. According to the cosmonauts, they were reportedly the size of an airliner. This incident was deemed top secret by the Soviet Union and the crew was cautioned not to speak of the event publicly. All the cosmonauts reported seeing “smiling angels.” While some have dismissed the incident as fatigue due to an extended stay in space, no explanation has been put forward for the fact that more than one crew had seen the angelic beings. After

the incident, the combined crew went on to stay in the vessel for a record breaking 237 days before abandoning it. Long-term stress could certainly explain what had happened to the first crew members, however it was only a short period of time after the arrival of the second crew that the angels revealed themselves again. How could the second

crew be suffering from the stress of long-term space travel as they had arrived only twelve days prior to the second sighting. No viable explanation has been offered as to why the second sighting occurred. This was not the first time that information has been withheld by the then Soviet Union. There exists authentic video footage shot from space

that was released by a Russian whistleblower providing important information that has been known about for a long time. It confirms many things regarding the planetary shifts, entering into a new dimension and frequency and much more. Secrets have been withheld from the public for as long as the space race has existed.
