Losquadro Announces $300k in Funding for Mastic Beach
Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro was the keynote speaker at last week’s Greater Mastic Beach Chamber meeting that was attended by over 50 merchants and community leaders. Superintendent Losquadro announced that his office would be spending over $300,000 on improvements to the
Neighborhood Road business district this summer. “Thanks to the support of the town board we were able to secure $150,000 to replace and upgrade street lighting along Neighborhood Road. We will also be completing numerous sidewalk, curbing and drainage repairs thanks to a $100,000 federal grant.” “We have also partnered with New York State Assemblyman Joe DeStefano and with the Mastics, Moriches, Shirley Community Library in securing a $50,000 state grant to install a new crosswalk in front of the Mastic Beach Library annex that is scheduled to open this summer,” said Losquadro. Losquadro then discussed changes and improvements that he has made to the highway department to reduce service calls, response time and taking proactive steps in advance of problems.

Suffolk County Community College’s Laura Adams Awarded Prestigious Vanguard Award Support for the development/ production of this material was provided by a grant under the Strengthening Career and Technical
Laura Adams, a Suffolk County Community College Radio and Television Production major has been awarded a prestigious Vanguard Student Recognition Award. The Vanguard Award is presented annually by the Nontraditional Employment & Training (NET) Project, an initiative administered by SUNY Albany’s Center for Women in Government & Civil Society in partnership with the New York State Education Department. Adams was among only nine students state-wide nominated for the prestigious award that acknowledges outstanding students who are enrolled in career and technical education programs that prepare them for professions that are not traditional for their gender. Adams, 39, a Nesconset mother of two said Radio and Television Production has always been a passion. “I am truly honored to be among the winners of the Vanguard Award. I feel immense validation in this moment, and I am incredibly grateful to receive this recognition. I am empowered by all women whose passion fuels their career, especially those in professions nontraditional for their gender. I would love to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Gayle Sheridan. Her support, guidance and knowledge continue to inspire me motivating me to persevere in Radio, Television, and Film production,” Adams said. “The Vanguard Award not only recognizes outstanding students,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, “but also the work being done at Suffolk to support non-

production is stellar.” Adams recently spearheaded production of spoken word versions of several student works from the college’s literary magazine, Perspectives for the college’s radio station, Suffolk Radio (scccir. com) where Adams also works and interned. “Laura’s talent and knowledge of our industry has helped Suffolk Radio, as well as the rest of the staff, turn out excellent audio productions. Our Perspectives Literary Magazine features her crowning achievement. It’s been a pleasure having Laura as a member of our Suffolk Radio team,” said Suffolk Internet Radio Station manager Bill Terry. The Vanguard Award Ceremony will be held virtually at the NET Conference on Thursday, May 19, 2022.
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized the 100th Eagle Scout with Troop 205, Robert Martin Camlet, of East Islip in a ceremony held at Timber Point Elementary School. Robert earned his Eagle Scout ranking by completing his service project of planning, constructing and replanting the 9/11 Memorial along with the East Garden in front of the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in
East Islip. He is a graduate of East Islip High School, where he held high honors throughout all four years. He is currently a freshman in the Honors Program at Suffolk County Community College, completing his core requirements and next year will be applying to four-year colleges to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Suffolk County Legislator Manuel Esteban (R-Commack) today announced that Commack resident Maria Teresa Romero has been named the Suffolk County’s 2022 “Woman of Distinction” for her work in founding Latina Sisters Support, Inc., which provides outreach, education and support about breast cancer to non-English speaking women. “Today we are making history,” said Esteban. “As Suffolk County’s first Hispanic Republican Legislator, having the honor of naming the very first Hispanic Woman of Distinction will forever be a highlight of my brand-new career in government.” Ms. Romero is the first Hispanic woman to receive this distinguished honor since the first award was presented in 2003. She was chosen to represent the 16th Legislative District by Legislator Esteban, who is also the first Hispanic Republican representing this district. Ms. Maria Teresa Romero is a Breast Cancer survivor of eleven (11) years. Ms. Romero turned her

Legislator Rob Trotta Participates in the Northport-East Northport School District’s Simulated Legislative Hearings Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella (3rd District, Moriches) recently honored Mastic resident Kevin Meyer as the 3rd Legislative District’s 2022 Irish American of Distinction. In 2019, March was designated “Irish American Heritage Month” in Suffolk County, allowing legislators to recognize an Irish American residing in their district as an Irish American of Distinction. “When selecting this year’s honoree, Kevin was an obvious choice,” said Legislator Mazzarella. “Kevin’s involvement in our community has made a significant impact on thousands of people, especially within the William Floyd School District. He is proud of his Irish heritage and can trace his Irish roots through multiple generations.” Meyer is a third-generation Irish-
American whose great-grandparents were both born in Ireland on his mother’s side. He is a lifelong resident of Mastic where he resides with his wife Amy and their eight children. Kevin is a devoted family man, and is also the newest member of the William Floyd School District Board of Education. Kevin is a retired New York City Fireman, where he served with Engine 320 in Queens. He is heavily involved in community volunteer work, including coaching various youth soccer, lacrosse, cross country, and basketball teams. In addition, he has been instrumental in community clean-ups, food drives, blood drives, various fundraisers, and serving at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children. “Kevin is dedicated to helping people, from his firefighting career to his selfless volunteering in the community,” said Mazzarella. “He

Some of the topics addressed by the students included food waste, pedestrian safety, housing costs, animal cruelty, invasive species, deer/ car accidents and air conditioning in schools. “The students did an excellent job and were well prepared and knowledgeable about each of their areas. I applaud them for participating in this program and their teacher for conducting simulated legislative hearings to give the students

Supervisor Romaine Hosts St. Patrick’s Day Bash Over 300 friends and supporters attended Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine’s St. Patrick’s Day bash this past week. The annual event not only celebrated St. Patrick’s Day but also allowed Romaine to raise funds for the re-election of Republicans to the town board. The event featured Irish food, drinks and entertainment.

Hampton Coffee Opens in Center Moriches
Locally-owned coffee roaster Hampton Coffee Company opened its 6th café location in Center Moriches recently, it’s first location in the Town of Brookhaven, and it’s westernmost outpost. The 27-year-old Southampton-based company’s newest café is located at 235 Montauk Highway, in front of the Center Moriches Free Library. In fact, the location is a joint venture between Hampton Coffee and the Library which recruited them two years ago to help them create a coffee bar experience for the Library’s patrons. “We were so proud that we were selected by the Library Board to help design and operate their café,” said Hampton Coffee Company co-owner Jason Belkin. “We were looking to open in Center Moriches for some time. It’s such an amazing community and we kept hearing it was missing a local coffee place.” The new Hampton Coffee features the same full breakfast, lunch, and dessert menu as the other Hampton Coffees, the nearest being in Westhampton Beach. Bakery items are baked here each morning and there are plenty of Gluten-Free and Vegan options. Coffee comes freshly

WFHS Freshman Zariel Macchia Continues to Dominate, Secures All-American Honors
It continues to be an amazing year for William Floyd High School freshman and star student-athlete Zariel Macchia. After dominating the fall season of cross country, she continued to make her presence felt in track throughout the winter. She has won or placed in the top three in multiple races and secured AllAmerican and All-State honors in the process. “At this point there is nothing that surprises me about Zariel,” said John Ryan, head coach of the girls’ varsity track and cross country teams. “What she has accomplished so far in her
young career is truly unimaginable.” In February, Macchia was crowned the overall champion in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:56.57 at the Section XI State Qualifying Meet, which qualified her for the State Championship Meet in early March. She followed that up with two victories at the Long Island Elite Meet – the 600-meter and the 1,500-meter – becoming the only student-athlete in the competition to win two events at this meet. Then in early March, she ran a third-place finish at the New York
State Championship meet, earning her All-State honors in the process. Her time of 2:51.73 was among the top 10 times this indoor season in the entire nation and the fastest time ever run by a freshman at the New York State Championship meet, according to Coach Ryan. Zariel competed at the Nike and New Balance Indoor Track & Field National Championships over the weekend of March 12-13 and took home first place overall in the Nike National Championship Two-Mile race with a time of 10:17.09, the fastest two-mile time ever recorded by a female athlete from Long Island and the all-time national record for a freshman. This victory secured her First Team All-American honors. “Zariel’s natural ability, combined with her work ethic, puts her on a different level,” added Coach Ryan. “She is a ferocious competitor, a gifted student, a model teammate and a caring soul. As a coach I love her competitive nature, but it’s her humility when the race is over that makes her special. Zariel would rather see others recognized for their achievements before her own. She is laser focused, goal-oriented, and always able to understand the bigger picture. It’s still hard for me to believe that she’s only a freshman.” Zariel’s accomplishments up to this point include winning the Suffolk County Class A girls cross country
championship two years in a row (8th and 9th grade); winning the Suffolk County Division Championship in the 5K two years in a row (8th and 9th grade); placing second in the Eastern States Championship Race at the Manhattan College High School Invitational; and winning the annual Smith Point Bridge 5K Run for Literacy race two years in a row (7th and 9th grade – no race in 8th grade due to the pandemic). She was also named last season’s Suffolk County Female Runner of the Year. She also ran a second-place finish in the 2021 Eastbay Cross Country Regional Championships in November, which
qualified her for the Eastbay Cross Country National Championship Meet in San Diego, CA, in December. Zariel finished 12th in that race, higher than any other freshman or sophomore in the United States, resulting in All-American honors. She had been training and preparing to compete in the Pan American Cross Country Cup on March 27 in Serra, Brazil, however, the U.S. is not sending a team this year due to COVID-related travel restrictions. Zariel was also recognized at a William Floyd Board of Education meeting in January for her vast accomplishments.

NYS Senators: Pass “Billy’s Law” Now
LI Republican Senators join Upstate and Uniformed Officials to Urge Passage of Measure to Authorize Bail & Pre-Trial Detention for ALL Arson Felonies Long Island’s State Senate Republicans – Senators Phil Boyle, Alexis Weik, Mario Mattera, and Anthony Palumbo – were joined today by state Senator Mike Martucci at the Brentwood Fire Department to introduce a bill named “Billy’s Law”, that would authorize bail and pre-trial detention for all arson felonies, allowing law enforcement to keep those criminals off New York streets. “Robberies, assaults and now arson—the long list of violent crimes resulting from Albany’s failed ‘bail reforms’--continues to grow. But it shouldn’t have to take the death of a hero volunteer firefighter like Billy Steinberg to recognize that weakening our laws emboldens criminals and makes our communities less safe. We need to repeal cashless bail, give judges more discretion to detain dangerous criminals, support police and once again make public safety a priority in our state,” said Senator Alexis Weik (R,C - Patchogue). As a volunteer firefighter of 25 years, I understand the vital necessity of passing “Billy’s Law”. We must act to protect not only New York’s firefighters but all of our residents who may be harmed when arsonists are released without bail”, said Senator Phil Boyle (R,C – Bay Shore). “A selfless hero to his community, Assistant Chief Steinberg is a victim
of our state’s ill-conceived cashless bail system and his loss should make it clear that the bail reform policy is failing our residents. We need to take immediate steps to reevaluate this law and include our first responders, our prosecutors, our judges and our residents in a much-needed discussion of how to best protect our law-abiding New Yorkers. Billy’s story is a tragedy that should have and could have been averted and it is New York State’s responsibility to make the changes we need before we lose one more innocent resident,” said NY Senator Mario R. Mattera (R,C,IP – Smithtown). “The unintended consequences of no cash bail have wreaked havoc throughout our communities and has made the state less safe for residents and first responders. On Saturday, January 15, 2022, William “Billy” Steinberg, 37, assistant chief with the Forestburgh Fire Company, responded to a fire in an empty vacation home in Sullivan County. He never made it home that night as he collapsed and died of a heart attack on the scene of the fire.
Police have charged a man with setting that fire, the same man who was charged just one day before, with setting fires on January 10 and January 13, 2022. However, due to New York’s current bail reform law, this serial arsonist was not held in lieu of bail for the earlier fires -- he was set free on January 14, 2022. Authorities say the very next day, January 15, he set the blaze that took Billy Steinberg’s life. The Senators were joined by both fire and law enforcement officials who applaud the efforts to protect our men and women in uniform as well as the general public from dangerous criminals. “There are countless reasons why the disastrous ‘bail reform’ measure passed in Albany must be repealed. Arson is a serious, life-threatening crime, and arsonists must be held responsible for their actions,
to the fullest extent of the law. Firefighters and law enforcement share a sacred bond, both swearing an oath to preserve and protect New Yorkers. The loss of any member of the Uniformed Services from the actions of a criminal is tragic, and ‘Billy’s Law’ would help hold criminals responsible for their actions. The State Senate and Assembly must pass this action in the name of safety for all New Yorkers, and those who wear a uniform.” – Noel DiGerolamo, President, Suffolk County PBA. It’s no wonder that almost half of the people who live here want to leave.
• The department still can’t provide a full list of residents who died “and the actual number of nursing home residents who died is still uncertain.” • The state was “slow to respond” to a federal directive to survey nursing homes for problems in controlling infections. • The department experienced “a persistent lack of funding” and was unprepared for an emergency such as the pandemic after 10 years of the Cuomo administration. • New York “significantly trailed” other states in protecting nursing home residents. Fair-minded New Yorkers could be inclined to give Cuomo a pass for this horror show, but probably

We need to learn lessons from the pandemic tragedy so that these mistakes never happen again, and a good place to start would have been an honest accounting by the state’s chief executive. Sadly, Andrew Cuomo lied to New Yorkers about what really happened and I hope that the voters of his “Vampire State” are more careful in the future about who they elect to office. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN A new Cold War has suddenly arrived. And as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned last week, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could lead to a hot nuclear war. Guterres declared that Putin’s “raising the alert level of Russian nuclear forces is a bone-chilling development. The prospect of nuclear conflict, once unthinkable, is now back within the realm of possibility.” I spent much time last year completing a book, co-authored with historian Christopher Verga, titled Cold War Long Island. I thought I was writing about the past. Still, in 2020 The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set its “Doomsday Clock” at 100 seconds to midnight with it defining midnight as “nuclear annihilation.” This was the closest to midnight since the clock was set at since it was created in 1947. It was kept at 100 seconds to midnight last year and again this year. “U.S. relations with Russia and China remain tense, with all three countries engaged in an array of nuclear modernization and expansion efforts,” said The Bulletin in January 2022. Cold War Long Island was published in October 2021. Dr. Verga who teaches Long Island history at Suffolk County Community College and whose book World War II Long Island: Homefront in Nassau and Suffolk came out in 2021, asked me to coauthor the successor volume. This was because, several decades older than he, I lived through, and as a journalist covered, various Cold War happenings on Long Island. Indeed, as an elementary school student at P.S. 136 in Queens, I and the other pupils were issued dog tags to wear around our necks and were led in “duck-and-cover” exercises—ducking under our desks—regularly at school. The specter of nuclear war hung over our heads. As a journalist, I covered the U.S. Army and Air Force having established nuclear-tipped Nike Hercules and BOMARC missile bases on Long Island. The plan: to fire the missiles at formations of Soviet bombers feared heading to New York City, detonating their nuclear tips which had the power and more so of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and blow the formations out of the sky. Much of the resulting radioactivity could
fall out on Long Island—but in the Cold War period this wasn’t considered a big worry by the military. I covered the case of Soviet spy Robert Glenn Thompson, interviewing him after his arrest and then guilty plea. Thompson, of Bay Shore, ran a fuel oil business in Babylon and otherwise conducted espionage for the Soviet Union. He gathered information about prospective targets in the New York Metro Area. This included taking photos which he passed on to his Soviet contacts. Previously he was in the Air Force working in an intelligence office in Berlin. He was sentenced to 30 years in prison but was released in a spy exchange after 13 years.
There was more including writing about the original mission of the Plum Island Animal Disease Center just off Long Island. Newsday investigative reporter John McDonald nailed this by obtaining through the Freedom of Information Act documents that told how, as he wrote, “A 1950s military plan to cripple the Soviet economy by killing horses, cattle and swine called for making biological warfare weapons out of exotic animal diseases at a Plum Island laboratory, now declassified army records reveal.” Facsimiles of documents were reprinted in Newsday including on its front page. As for now, “The Impossible Suddenly Became Possible,” was

Either way, with Putin ruling Russia, at hand is a new Cold War, at least.

As Kyrie Irving sat courtside at the Barclays Center last week watching a basketball game, we quickly saw the ridiculousness of it all. Irving still cannot play for the Nets at home, yet was able to sit and watch a game. That is the insanity of New York City’s Covid rules. Irving decided that the risks of injecting himself with an experimental potion had more negative worries than potentially catching Covid itself. Because of this, he sits, and is banned from the court. Kevin Durant finally called out the NYC mayor for the absurdity of it all and just days later Kyrie took the court ... in Orlando, and dropped 60 points on the Magic. Irving’s performance is one that was a career high for him, but it also highlights what this team could be. So, the question then must be asked - is there a ROAD court advantage. The Brooklyn Nets have one sight in mind and that is the NBA Championship, but to get there they will need
Irving to play well. That simply is not allowed in Brooklyn. The Nets have to begin to think strategically here, and maybe not gaining any sort of home court could be beneficial. This nonsense goes beyond just Kyrie and the Nets though. This past week New York City told the Mets and Yankees that they won’t be able to play unvaccinated players, if the mandate still stands when they take the field in early April. The Yankees had at least one prominent star who was unvaccinated when the announcement came down, and then the very next day signed a big name free agent, who also remains unvaccinated. The New York Mets were among a handful of teams who last season didn’t reach the 85% vaccination rate as well. Are we really living in a place where for 81 games the Yankees and Mets will be missing key

The spring training camps have opened and there are still free agents out there to be signed and with a number of very interesting injury situations questions are in need of being answered. It is not the best sign that Adley Rutschman shows up at camp and he has a tricep injury and will be out 2-3 weeks. This pretty much ensures that he will start the year in the minor leagues and that might have happened anyway without this injury. And since owners and players were not in contact during the lockout, the San Diego Padres had no idea that the face of the franchise, Fernando Tatis Jr. had broken his wrist in the winter and needed surgery keeping him out for 3 months. This leaves a lot of you in redraft leagues confused about where to draft people this year, so let’s jump into the questions.
Q: With Fernando Tatis in line to miss at least 40% of the season, where should he be drafted now?
There is a lot to dislike about Tatis riding a motorcycle this off-season and hurting himself. For starters, he has a clause in his

contract that prohibits certain activities and motorcycle riding is amongst them. Still, this is the best player in fantasy baseball right now at a premium defensive position. He would have been a sure fire #1 pick overall. But what do you do if he is now going to miss at least 40% of the season? Where do I draft him now. Curiously, in many mock drafts Tatis is being drafted anywhere from 10th overall all the way up to 99th overall. This is a bit of a shock to me, but let’s try to decipher what drafting him 10th overall might mean. Tatis’ projection on ESPN has been scaled back to 339 at bats. 72 runs scored, 27 home runs and 64 RBI’s with 17 stolen bases. If you draft someone to replace him for the estimated 40% of the time he will miss, look no further than San Diego’s own designated replacement Ha Seong Kim. He is projected to hit 9 home runs and steal 8 bases, albeit with a low projected batting of .208. Still, if you add Kim’s projection to Tatis’ projection you are getting 36 projected home runs and 25 stolen bases, and if you spend your 10th pick in a re-draft league, that is an outcome you can live with.

Drawbacks to this strategy – you are presuming that Tatis will have a setback free recovery and he will return from a broken wrist with his power and skill intact. This is a big risk as this can’t be presumed. But if you were the guy who spent a #99 pick at your draft (roughly an 8th round draft pick) you cannot complain about 36 home runs and 25 stolen bases from your shortstop. Grabbing him at #10 is risky, drafting him at #99 is a no-brainer. You need to consider the risk appetite of the owners
you are drafting against. Are they aggressive risk takers? Is there a bit of a gambler in them? Bottom line, if you have just gotten past the 3rd round of your draft with Tatis not being drafted, you need to drop him into your draft watch list for the 4th round. I would take that risk in the 4th round. You might miss out on him, but at least you have responsibly considered the risks.
Q: Ronald Acuna is coming off reconstructive knee
The news out of Braves camp is surprisingly fantastic for Acuna’s return. The projected date of his return could be as early as April 21st as the designated hitter. Thanks to the Universal DH being adopted in the National League this year and the season starting on April 7th, you might only miss 2 weeks of him. However, the Braves GM also noted that Acuna could be returning to the field by May 21st. This would mean that he would be returning to action while not 100% healthy. This seems to be risky on its face, and I would not be so sure he can be expected to steal bases at first. Some mock drafts are taking Acuna as early as #4 overall, almost sure to be pricing him as if he is not impaired at all. We are also seeing him go as late as #21, or later in the 2nd round. It’s important to remember that this was an ACL tear and we don’t know what his level of speed will be at. Certainly May 21st seems to be saying to me that he will not be 100% until late May. I wouldn’t take him until late in the 2nd round either.

Medal of Honor
BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. In 1990, the U.S. Congress designated March 25 as “National Medal of Honor Day.” Thus, as we look at this day of honor in history, it needs to be known and understood. The Medal of Honor is the United States government’s highest and most prestigious military decoration that may be awarded to recognize our military personnel who have distinguished themselves by acts of valor. The medal is normally awarded by the President of the United States, but as it is presented “in the name of the United States Congress”, it is often referred to (erroneously) as the “Congressional Medal of Honor”. The President typically presents the Medal of Honor at a formal ceremony intended to represent the gratitude of the American people, with posthumous presentations to the primary next of kin. According to the Medal of Honor Historical Society of
the United States, there have been 3,530 individuals since the decoration’s creation, with over 40% awarded for actions during the American Civil War. Since 1941, more than half of the Medals of Honor have been awarded posthumously. 472 Medals of Honor were awarded in World War II, 146 in the Korean War, 261 in the Vietnam War, 7 in Iraq War and 20 in the War in Afghanistan. There are three distinct variants of the medal: one for the Department of the Army, awarded to soldiers, one for the Department of the Navy, awarded to sailors and Marines, as well as coast guardsmen of the Department of Homeland Security, and one for the Department of the Air Force, awarded to airmen and Space Force guardians. The Medal of Honor was introduced for the Department of the Navy in 1861, soon followed by the Department
of the Army’s version in 1862. The Department of the Air Force used the Department of the Army’s version until they received their own distinctive version in 1965. The Medal of Honor is the oldest continuously issued combat decoration of the United States Armed Force. In 1944, the suspension ribbons for both the Army and Navy were replaced with the now familiar neck ribbon. Although not required by law or military regulations, members of the uniformed services are encouraged to render salute to recipients of the Medal of Honor as a matter of respect and courtesy regardless of rank or status, Actually the Air Force Instruction 1.1, .1. paragraph 1.6.1.1 requires that salutes be rendered to Medal of Honor recipients. They not only deserve our salute, but much more.

MARINE TECH TALK BY CAPTAIN JEFF ROYE
A few weeks ago I briefly touched on the subject of marine batteries. You’ve checked your water levels and fully charged your battery, but it drains quickly. Typically you can expect a marine battery to last 3 to 4 years, with a few reaching 6 years. There are three categories of marine battery: starting, deep cycle, and dual purpose. A starting battery is made up of thin plates surrounded by electrolyte. The thin plates are able to produce a large amount of amps in a short period of time to start your engines. A deep cycle battery is made up of thicker plates and electrolyte and are capable of producing electricity for a longer and steadier rate. They can discharge up to 50% and can fully recharge with no damage to the battery. Dual purpose batteries are a combination of starting and deep cycle. These are designed for smaller boats that don’t have the room for multiple batteries.
Batteries come in many varieties: Lead/acid batteries are the most common and least expensive. They are filled with battery acid and electrolyte. Absorbed glass matt (AGM) batteries have the electrolyte contained within fiberglass

matts between the plates. They are maintenance-free and can be installed horizontally or vertically. Properly maintained, they can last up to ten years. Gel batteries are filled with a gel-like electrolyte. Similar to AGM batteries, they can be recharged at a much faster rate
than lead/acid batteries. Lithium batteries are new to the market and require a special charger. They are only intended for deep cycle applications and must be totally separate from the starting circuit. There are some automotive lithium batteries available, but they are
not designed for the marine environment. Lithium batteries offer 10 times the battery life of lead/acid batteries. Lead/acid batteries cost between $90 and $500, for starting, deep cycle, and dual purpose. AGM and gel batteries cost between $160 and $1,000. Lithium batteries range from $130 and $2,800. Lithium chargers cost $400 to $600. Whatever battery you choose for your boat, proper maintenance and regular charging will extend the life of your battery and your investment. If you need help selecting and installing batteries in your boat, or if you have electrical issues that require troubleshooting, consult with a qualified marine electrician certified by ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council). These technicians have the necessary expertise to ensure that your boat is ready for the season.

When I teach seamanship classes, I eventually get around to the fact that the sea is a dangerous and hostile place – but, if prepared, you can increase your odds dramatically if you view yourself as an astronaut on a far away planet. Help is on the way. It will take time to get to you. What have you done to stay alive while the rescue team is heading for you? This column is about those steps.

Leave Her When She Has Sunk from Beneath You
The advice I always give to mariners is, “Never leave the boat, even if you can only cling to her up-turned keel, until she has sunk out from under you.” It is hard to imagine how much easier it is to find an over-turned hull than it is to find your lonely head peering out from the waves – and it isn’t easy to find that hull... It is like crossing the street at night. You can see the headlights of the car racing down the street quite clearly. But the driver can’t see you, especially if you are blending into the night’s colors. While you are bobbing in the waves, you can see the plane, helicopter or rescue boat – but your head can easily blend in with the waves and wave-caps, especially if you have no distinctive coloring or reflective material to help you stand out from the steely blue and white of wind-tossed seas. So, unless

the vessel has sunk beneath you, stay with her. And get up on her if you can since water will draw your body heat from you 25 times faster than air of the same temperature.

Remember, you’re marooned on Mars and it will take time for the rescue rocket to get to you – will you survive until help gets there? What should be in your ditch bag? Well, obviously,
First-aid kit. Flashlight and spare batteries.
Drinking water. You can survive for weeks without food; without water? Days.
A signaling mirror might even be more useful than day-smoke distress signals since you can throw a mirror’s light signal for miles.
Water-proof handheld VHF radio; maybe it comes with a handcranked charger too?
If your boat had an EPIRB aboard, take it with you – and a handheld radio.

Now the question is this: How hard – or easy – have you made it for others to find you? Clearly, coloration matters so be sure that your life-jackets, flotation devices and your ditch bag are brightly colored and have reflective materials attached. Secondly, if you haven’t invested in an EPIRB yet, consider it. There is nothing like having your own gear and ensuring that it is always in readiness. What used to be over $1,200 is now in the mid-hundreds. Over a 5-10 year life, what could be a cheaper or more reliable “come and get me!” beacon? What a pity it would be to survive the initial catastrophe, including getting off the may-day – but no one can find you and your crew. Think like an astronaut. You have to survive the rescue-cycle – and you have to be found by determined parties searching for you in a dangerous and hostile environment. Feeling inSECURE About Your Retirement Accounts Two Years After Change in Law?
How does the SECURE Act affect my retirement and estate planning?
On January 1, 2020, as we entered another year without any idea of what was on the horizon, a new federal law took effect regarding retirement accounts. The SECURE Act, “Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement”, affects millions of Americans who have been saving through tax-deferred retirement plans. The biggest impact falling those set to inherit these plans. Now, two years later, SECURE is still a new concept for many clients who are unaware of the law or how it applies to their own situation. One change is the age at which a plan holder must take required minimum distributions (“RMDs”) was increased from 70 ½ to 72. RMDs are taken annually, based on the full value of the account on December 31 of the prior year and the life expectancy of the plan holder. The delay to age 72 will result in a year and a half more of tax-deferred growth on the funds. SECURE also created a $10,000 penalty-free withdrawal for someone giving birth to or adopting a child. The Act also expanded the ability for small
business owners to offer retirement plan funding. However, the most drastic item in SECURE takes aim at the beneficiary of the plan after the death of the original plan holder. Prior to SECURE, a non-spouse designated beneficiary had the option of converting the plan to an inherited IRA and taking a RMD based upon their own life expectancy. The beneficiary could take more than the RMD if needed, realizing that each distribution is taxable income. Consider a 90-yearold with an IRS life expectancy of 12.2 years who names a 65-year-old child as designated beneficiary. A 65 year old has an IRS life expectancy of 22.9 years. That beneficiary could previously “stretch” the distributions over their life expectancy and allow those funds to grow tax-deferred for many more years. With SECURE, this stretch is lost for the majority of beneficiaries. SECURE prescribes a mandatory 10-year payout for a designated beneficiary. Being forced to liquidate in the 10 years will result in the payment of more income taxes than if the beneficiary had the 22.9year payout. The SECURE Act carved out limited

exceptions to this 10-year payout rule. These five categories of designated beneficiaries include a spouse, minor child of the plan holder, chronically ill person, disabled person, or a person not more than 10 years younger than the plan holder. If you have retirement assets, this change serves as a trigger to have your plan reviewed by your estate planning
attorney and financial advisor. This review is especially important where an estate plan includes a trust as the beneficiary of a retirement account. The terms of the trust may need to be adjusted from being a conduit trust to an accumulation trust. A conduit trust forces all distributions out to the beneficiary, whereas an accumulation trust allows the distributions to remain

protected in the trust. Other clients may decide to leave tax-deferred retirement assets to charities rather than individuals. Still others may rearrange allocations to make IRAs payable to a person not less than 10 years younger than them, such as a sibling. Thereby focusing on saving other types of assets for beneficiaries otherwise forced to take a 10-year taxable payout. Many Americans have spent their working lives contributing to taxdeferred plans with the idea that it will give them a stream of income in retirement, and pass on to their beneficiaries as a stream of income. While SECURE may not alter the plan for some, the impact of SECURE should be considered by all. Having a clean home may be on your top 10 list of things to do but I can guarantee you it is on your teen’s bottom 10. Priorities are different at different stages of life. Think back when you were a teen. Was having a clean bedroom that important to you? Friends, sports, hobbies, music, hanging out, eating and sleeping are the things that you should remember as being the chief pastimes in your youth. Well, it is no different now for your child. Should you expect that your child maintains a clean room? Absolutely! Should you have an argument over it and damage your relationship? Absolutely not! So where is the happy medium here? Well, one way is that you can just keep the door to your child’s room shut. This way, you do not have to look at the mess. After all, the mess is bothering you and not your child. But is this really how you want your child to live….in a mess of a room? I would think not either. So close the door until you can sit down
with your child and explain the importance of having a neat, clean, tidy room. Now, just how should that conversation go? 1. Acknowledge that it is his/ her room. It belongs to them as well as all the items in it. Your child may react that since it is his/her room, he/she can be as messy as he/she wants. Ok. Now what? 2. Use daily life comparisons without comparing your child to another child. For example, you can let them know that having a clean room is like taking a daily shower, like brushing teeth, like combing and styling hair. Having a clean room is part of personal hygiene. Most teens take personal hygiene very seriously. No one wants to have a negative comment made toward them that they are dirty or smelly or have greasy hair. 3. Compare having a clean room to daily actions. Would your teen eat off a dirty plate? Would your teen use a dirty

I am sure your child will agree that he/she does not want roaches or any other insects in his/her room. Arguing with your child over having a clean room will not get you anywhere. Children like to be spoken to and not spoken down to. If you teach by example, your child will learn. Do not expect perfection. If it’s a little messy on same days, it may be best to turn your head away and be thankful that it’s not a total disaster.

OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE The Archangel Gabriel has the distinction of being the only other angel besides Michael written of both in the Bible and the Koran. Gabriel’s name translates into “God Is My Strength.” More references to him are made throughout literature than any other angel. Of all the angels, He is the most called upon to serve as intermediary between God and humankind. Gabriel’s horn is unquestionably the most famous of all artifacts in angelic lore. Nearly four feet long and forged in shimmering, reflective silver, it is awe inspiring. It possesses three distinct energies that are channeled into sound. Gabriel is adept in playing it and obtaining from its sound both its subtlety and its power. The first strength of Gabriel’s horn is to play the most enchanting music heard throughout all of heaven. The playing of music and the singing of the angelic chorus which accompanies it are of immense importance to the Heavenly
Host. Gabriel is a talented musician and performer. The angelic Music Ministry sings constant praises to God, and Gabriel is their Director. The second strength of Gabriel’s horn is its ability to lull all who hear its mellifluent tones into a blissful sleep. Gabriel will frequently use this attribute of the instrument to accompany him when he visits an individual on earth in their dreams. Gabriel channels his celestial power into waves of strength through the third and most potent of this glorious instrument’s inherent characteristics. During Lucifer’s Great Rebellion against God, Gabriel used his horn to rally Michael’s troops against the legions of the devil on the celestial battlefield. The horn was an important factor in the defeat of Lucifer at the hands of Michael and his angelic warriors. In instances when a more overwhelming show of power is needed, Gabriel will use his huge scythe. The blade

of this weapon possesses an incredible sharpness. The scythe is described in The Talmud’s Sanhedrin 95b as being “ready since creation” to spill the blood of those who have declared themselves enemies of God. Thought of as farming tools used to harvest wheat and other grains, a scythe can be a deadly weapon. The lore makes out Gabriel’s scythe to have a wooded ash handle which spans
seven feet in length and has an iron blade five feet long. Gabriel girds himself in either heavy burnished armor, or wraps himself in thick layers of cloth, heavy enough to be effective against attack. In flight he appears to be surrounded by a brilliant white corona which whips wildly around him. His unique daring look and overwhelming power as enhanced by his shimmering
horn and intimidating scythe make him a fearful sight on the battlefield. The wide belt at his waist is composed of leather and gold and the epithet “God Is My Strength.” Although a mighty warrior when called upon by God or Michael, Gabriel is the Angel of the Annunciation and his first love is his Music Ministry and being God’s foremost messenger and intermediary to humankind.
