LaLota Announces Run Recently, I was sought out about running for Congress this November to succeed Lee Zeldin who is running for Governor. What was stressed upon me was how Long Island needs a dedicated leader who can (1) win the district; (2) vote to remove Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House; and (3) help to put our Country back on the right track. After Albany partisans finalized their gerrymandering two weeks ago, the “Zeldin District” now zigs and zags from both of Long Island’s forks and includes all or some of Suffolk County’s ten towns and the eastern portion of central Nassau County — adding parts of the town where I live, the town where my wife and I went to high school and the town where our three children go to school. Don’t Fall Victim to Needless Solicitation Several years ago, the Suffolk County Clerk’s Office informed the public about a variety of companies offering to sell certified copies of deeds to homeowners at a cost of up to 1,200% more than what a person would pay to receive the same copy through the Clerk’s Office. Because of the publicity, State law was enacted regulating the practice of companies that offer to sell you a copy of your deed. The law requires exact language to ensure that consumers are able to make informed decisions regarding the purchase of certified copies of property deeds that clearly delineates the fact that such copies are readily available for a much smaller fee from your County Clerk’s Office. However, these record retrieval services companies continue to seek new customers and often canvass entire neighborhoods with solicitations offering to sell homeowners a certified copy of the deed to their home for a significantly higher cost then is available from our Office. Some of the most common questions can be summed up in the following statements; first, there is no general sense of urgency to have a copy of your deed on hand at all times. Proud New Yorkers are waking up to the Woke agenda and we are turning the tide.” He pointed out that the Republicans took over the district attorney offices in both Long Island counties and took control of the Suffolk legislature for the first time in 20 years. The Nassau County executive is now a Republican and he has immediately joined the battle. “We have a great candidate for governor from right here in my district and exceptional contenders all the way around.” This year, the entire state legislature is up for grabs and DeStefano said he is proud to be
part of the Red Wave that has been working tirelessly to beat back the rising tide of Progressive Socialism. “I will not let New York City politicians dictate to the rest of us.” The bottom line: “The time has come for us to choose between the failed policies of the Progressive Left or the Conservative values that have served our nation well for hundreds of years. On February 23, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Councilmember Jonathan Kornreich welcomed “Arrow of Light” Cub Scouts from Pack 204 in Miller Place to Town Hall. The group held a lively discussion about Town government and the role of the Supervisor and Town Council. Part of their requirement to transition
from Cub Scout to Boy Scout is to speak with local leaders about how they serve their community. Supervisor Romaine said, “Scouts visiting Town Hall is a longtime tradition and I am always happy to join my colleagues to speak with them about my career in government. These scouts asked very good questions
and their enthusiasm gives me great hope for the future of this country.” Councilwoman Bonner said, “I really enjoyed our meeting with the Cub Scouts at Town Hall. They were so enthusiastic to learn more about how government works, and I was happy to spend the time talking with them. These boys are the leaders of tomorrow and from what I can see, we will be in good hands.” Councilmember Kornreich said, “I really enjoyed meeting with the Scouts. I was so impressed by their well thought out and sophisticated questions. Explaining how government and politics works to young people really helps put into perspective what we’re here to do and I have every hope and confidence that these young people will grow up to be an active part of the community.”

Without Borders Dear Editor, Whether or not you think Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is major foreign policy failure of the Biden Administration, don’t let it be a distraction from our problems here at home. While attention is being focused on the Ukrainian border, America’s border is being overrun by thousands of illegal immigrants daily. They’re being transported without vaccine or mask mandates into New York in the middle of the night and state taxpayers will be forced through this year’s budget to give them $2 billion in payouts. This is in addition to the free health care, education and social services we provide through our tax dollars. In New York City, undocumented aliens are now allowed to vote, a right they’re planning to extend nationwide in order to steal elections from hard-working Americans. Our wide-open southern border is a freeway for the fentanyl and other drugs that are killing our children in record numbers. While our young soldiers are being mustered to protect a border on the other side of the globe, drug cartels control our border with Mexico and are making a killing in human trafficking, drugs, and the sex trade. A crime wave has descended on our state thanks to the new bail laws, defund the police and the attack on law enforcement and the political elite are desperately trying to change the subject.
The William Floyd Elementary School Student Council recently held its annual “Souper Bowl of Caring” food drive to collect non-perishable food items for those in need from their school community. Thanks to the generosity of students and their families, the drive resulted in more than 830 food items!
The Souper Bowl of Caring food drive in partnership with TackleHunger.org, inspires people across the nation to tackle hunger in their local communities. The Souper Bowl of Caring empowers youth and unites communities to tackle hunger using the energy of the Super Bowl held each year in February.
The organization’s vision is to transform this effort into a nationwide movement inspiring people to give locally and make a collective impact on hunger. Great job by the students, their families and the student council led by advisors Donna Haakonson and Carol Chisari!
We’re asked to believe that the Russian invasion is causing the rampant inflation that has driven up the price of gasoline, food, rent and other necessities. The fact is, the inflation that is squeezing working families, seniors and the middle class started long before the Russia diversion and is the direct result of misguided energy policies, supply chain failures and billion-dollar giveaways on both the state and federal levels. At first, they tried to blame the faltering economy—and even the crime wave—on COVID, and when that didn’t work, Russia is now the convenient excuse. Haven’t we heard that one before? The bottom line: It’s the misguided policies of Joe Biden and the Progressive Left that are causing our problems here at home, not Vladimir Putin. Sincerely,

Putin’s Invasion of Ukraine
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN In addition to being on Long Island all my working life as a journalist and later a journalism professor, too, I have spent considerable time in Russia. But as Vladimir Putin grabbed more and more power and seized dictatorial rule, I wouldn’t go back there under any condition. The brutal invasion of Ukraine that he has had Russia embark on and led, and his declaration as it began that if any nation “tries to impede us…the Russian response will be immediate and lead to consequences you have never seen in history”—a brazen threat of starting nuclear war—were not surprising to me. My involvement in Russia came after I broke the story in The Nation magazine after the Challenger blew up in 1986 about how its next mission was to loft a space probe fueled with plutonium, the most lethal of all radioactive substances. If the explosion had happened then, four months later, and the plutonium dispersed, the impacts could have been horrendous. My follow-up writings on the use of nuclear power in space included authoring a book “The Wrong Stuff,” writing many articles and presenting TV programs.
And I was contacted by Dr. Alexey Yablokov, the most eminent environmentalist in Russia, the former environmental advisor to Presidents Boris Yeltsin and Mikhail Gorbachev. He was long concerned about the space nuclear activities of Russia and previously the Soviet Union. There were accidents like in the U.S. program including one in 1978 when a Cosmos satellite with a nuclear reactor crashed to Earth, breaking apart and spreading radioactive debris over 500 miles of northern Canada. Yablokov, described in one publication when he died in 2017 as the “the towering grandfather of Russian ecology,” invited me to Russia to share information on the nuclear-in-space issue. There would be many visits— seven in all—and presentations including, in 1998, in Voronezh, organized by Yablokov’s Center for Russian Environmental Policy on “Toward a Sustainable Russia: Environmental Policy;” speaking in 1999 at the “All-Russia Congress on Protection of Nature”—in a packed sports stadium along the Volga River in Saratov—and, in 2000, presenting at a conference on “Health of the Environment” at the Russian Academy of Sciences in

We met in New York where he had come to participate in a conference at the UN about whales. The plight of whales and dolphins had been an early research subject for Yablokov. He would go on to write hundreds of articles as well as textbooks on biology and ecology.

Moscow. We became friends and Yablokov stayed with us at our home in Sag Harbor. He enjoyed this area and was intrigued by the Shinnecock Indian Nation. I found through the years that not just Yablokov but the many Russians I connected with were remarkably warm and friendly. The Putin reign is one thing; the Russian people another. My last presentation was a keynote speech, “Parallel Atomic Universes,” at a “Russian-American
Women’s Leadership and Nuclear Safety Activism” conference in Tomsk in 2002. Putin had become prime minister in 1999. And things were changing—quickly. There was repression of the press and a takeover of media by Putin allies. As to environmental progress, a huge reversal has begun. As Yablokov said from the podium at a 1999 environmental conference in Moscow: “The result of Putin’s politics is fascism.” In recent days, here in the U.S.
When we met that last time, Yablokov had become leader of the Green Russia component of the Russian United Democratic Party and was also deputy chairman of the party—acronymed YABLOKO— which was challenging Putin. He told me of being followed and of living in an authoritarian state. Russia has been a surprise for me. For example, Tomsk—which is in Siberia—looks like Vermont with streams flowing amid woods of white birch. And, as noted, the people I’ve met are lovely. But Putin, this Hitler-like former KGB colonel who has amassed a multi-billion ruble fortune in his rise to power, has brought Russia down—and if he is not stopped, what will he do to the world?

When you talk about big offseason quarterbacks in new homes most football fans’ attention goes immediately to Aaron Rodgers. Mr. Discount Double Check once again this past week had the media and fans alike scratching their heads at his antics as he posted a cryptic social media post, that for many was a goodbye to Green Bay. In true Rodgers fashion he went on a radio show the next day and downplayed the incident, claiming he just got off of an extended ‘cleanse” and this was his reaction afterwards. Rodgers new (or current) destination will greatly impact the 2022 season, as well as the betting lines, so there is intense interest ... and he knows that. Maybe Rodgers is just trolling us all, but it certainly feels like his relationship with the Green Bay Packers, much like his real life relationships, has ended. Rodgers isn’t the only QB though that fans in needy signal
caller situations are clamoring for. This week Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray both took their teams off of their social media accounts. This childish, but millennial minded, move sends fans guessing what does it all mean. The thing is, more times than not, it doesn’t mean anything. Murray isn’t going anywhere. This was more of a bargaining chip, or a temper tantrum, than anything else. Wilson we can infer much of the same. Russ has been seemingly wanting out of Seattle for years now, but he just got a $5 million dollar bonus, and most would be stunned to see him anywhere else. But, when stars pull this nonsense, it does make the mind spin. The one QB who most certainly will be on a different team is DeShaun Watson. Watson has plenty of legal hurdles to overcome before any movement can happen, but there is growing speculation that

teams are ready to talk a deal with the Texans. Broan Flores was fired, in part, because of him wanting to bring Watson on board instead of supporting his QB Tua, and now Flores is on the staff in the quarterback needy city of Pittsburgh. Watson
Fantasy baseball in 2022 could end up being a shortened season. The owners set a hard deadline of February 28th with which to have a Collective Bargaining Agreement in place. And as we go to press here there is no deal in place. The worst phrase possible was used to discuss their latest talks. No substantive progress. The owners are holding tight that without a deal on February 28th, spring training cannot begin on March 5th and regular season games will get cancelled after that. Almost everyone expected this to go down to the wire. As fantasy baseball players we have to sit powerless and let this play out. But there are things for all of us to keep an eye on. Let’s spend our time productively and keep an eye on these things. 1. Freddie Freeman is a free agent and has to sign somewhere. If it turns out to be the Yankees which is heavily rumored, Atlanta will face a PR backlash. A trade for Oakland’s Matt Olson or a signing of free agent Anthony Rizzo may be alternates. Atlanta does not have a 1st baseman waiting in the wings here to plug in.

2. Carlos Correa and Trevor Story free agent signings will have to be absorbed. But who really wants either of these guys? The Yankees have huge, huge contracts out to Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton. Aaron Judge becomes a free agent next fall. And while Freddie Freeman is a huge fit to balance their mostly right handed lineup, Correa is a bad fit as he is right-handed and prized prospect Anthony Volpe will be developing in Triple AAA this season and perhaps only a season away. Plus, Correa switched his representation to Scott Boras. Trevor Story had a strange season in Colorado, and he had some throwing issues pop up in 2021 which is difficult for any team to make a $300 million investment towards such a key defensive position. The timing for both of these two would have been better if they were free agents a year ago. Correa has a spotty health record and outrageous contract demands and a brutal agent, and Story is not coming off a good season. 3. A potential All-Star right-fielder is going to be signed out of Japan and he is the best hitter to come out of Japan since
So, while the offseason is often a time to hope on a good draft, dream on free agents and wish for some trades, this year is the year that many franchises can dream big. The only problem is dreaming big often leads to bitter disappointment.

Hideki Matsui. Seiya Suzuki walks more than he strikes out, won several Gold Gloves in Japan, has decent speed and has a good personality. He checks all of the boxes on paper to appear as a smart free agent signing. Keep in mind though, prior to the Olympics the prestigious Baseball America rated the Top MLB prospects playing in the Olympics and Suzuki was ranked 6th. Now, Julio Rodriguez of the Seattle Mariners was ranked 1st, and he is one of, if not the best prospect in baseball right now. But something tells me from looking at the footage of Suzuki that his
pronounced uppercut swing is going to be difficult to catch up to major league fastballs without an adjustment. I suppose he is capable of making the adjustments but remember this. Hideki Matsui was a 50 home run hitter in Japan and a 27 HR hitter in the United States. Don’t overbid on Suzuki. Pay a price similar to what you would pay on a 25 HR/10 steal RF’er. 4. While we are waiting for owners and players to figure out how to split up billions of dollars in revenue, and while we try to contain our patience with baseball players who want more
and more in collective bargaining negotiations, we are going to have to spend our time otherwise. They are already the only professional athletes with guaranteed contracts and the best paid athletes even compared to the far more popular NFL. I would rather brush up on who will be drafted in the Baseball Draft of 2022 than discussing arbitration eligibility and other economic scenarios. And this could be a draft where three (3) high school players could be drafted before a college player is selected. Druw Jones, Termarr Johnson and Elijiah Greene are some of the most exciting high school profiles I have read in some time. Druw Jones is the son of former MLB legend Andruw Jones and is at the top of most lists to be drafted 1st overall. Termarr Johnson is a pure elite hitter who plays 2nd base, and is already being scouted as a future batting champion. And Elijiah Greene is the son of former NFL player Eric Green and scouts have rated both his power and his speed as a ‘70’ on the 20-80 scale Always be looking to the future in fantasy baseball.

Sometimes, the simplest thing can take on monumental proportions – if you get it wrong. And setting a proper anchor, and retrieving (or “weighing it” so you can “make way”), can make all the difference in the world when the wind starts to stiffen and all the other fishermen around you start to look askance at you… as you drag your anchor towards them…
Setting the Anchor
The art and science of anchoring are closely akin. It is all about leverage and “scope”. Scope is the ratio of the depth of the water (plus your freeboard, i.e., the distance from the water to your anchor’s cleat) to the amount of line, i.e., “anchor rode”, you’ve laid out. If you are in 7 feet of water and there is 3 feet from the water to the cleat, this is a distance of 10 feet. Lay out 70 feet of “ground tackle” – anchor, anchor chain, and line (rode) – and you have a scope of 7:1 (70/10). This happens to be the US Coast Guard’s recommended scope for proper anchoring under “normal” conditions. In light air, you can reduce to 5:1. In heavy seas, you should lay out 10:1 or even more.
The leverage aspect has to do with how the “flukes” create the holding power. The flukes are those long blades that actually stick into the sand (I am describing the Danforth-style anchor, which is ideal for our sandy and muddy bottoms on the South Shore). Imagine your hand is the anchor for a second. Make a “claw” with your hand and your down-turned fingers are the flukes. They would bite in deeper and more firmly if your arm (what would be the “shank” if it were part of the ground tackle) was laying flat along the surface (try it down at the beach with some sand.) If you start to lift your arm, you can see how your claw/fingers/flukes start to pry themselves out of the imaginary sand/mud/ground. This is why a longer scope is better than a shorter one. It “delevers” the flukes and keeps them pointing deeply into the holding surface. And the reason that chain (typically 6’ but it can obviously be more) is encouraged as the connecting medium between the anchor itself and the line is to add more weight to the shank – keeping the flukes digging in deeply.

Weighing the Anchor – Or is it Waying?
If 7:1 scope is recommended for good holding power, and 10:1 scope is even better than that, what would be best for providing the least holding power? If you said 1:1, you get an “A” in anchoring. Here’s how you do it…
it is stuck! Well, re-cleat the anchor rode so that it is pointing straight down to the anchor (this is called “snubbing” the anchor.) If the line is going straight down to the bottom from your cleat, the scope must be 1:1! Now, back away – don’t power forward! If the anchor suddenly breaks free, it could impale itself in your hull as it sweeps upwards under the force the boat surging ahead. Add power gradually astern and you will very likely break free. If you still haven’t, while power is still being applied in reverse, turn the helm hard over. This will cause the boat to rotate around the anchor. You are unscrewing from the bottom, like a cork screw. 99 times out of 100, this will finish the job. If the anchor is fouled though on rocks or cables, your last resort is to cut yourself free…
Hopefully, you have a crew man who can go to the bow and take up the slack, flaking it on the deck as it comes in, while you slowly power up over the anchor. When the anchor line is lying straight up and down, your crew yells “stop” and then tries to “weigh” or retrieve the anchor. But maybe

be boarded by an angry crew! Also, don’t anchor from the stern alone. If you anchor from the stern alone, you are likely to sink “on the hook.” Why? Well, your bow is now downwind and your stern, i.e., the flat transom, is into the wind. Water splashes against the transom and some splashes into the boat. The boat sits a little lower. The same size wave now splashes more water into the boat. The boat sits a little lower. You can see where this is headed. Down.

One of the toughest parts of anchoring is judging how much scope to put out when you are anchoring around other boats. All boats will swing downwind on their anchors. If you anchor 50’ behind another boat, and you put out 70’ of rode, pray that the wind doesn’t clock around to the opposite heading. If so, prepare to

What to expect at your estate planning consultation?
Most people do not look forward to an estate planning consultation, and in some cases, it is something they have put off for many years. Discussing the taboo subjects of aging, death and money often eases anxiety and provides peace of mind. It is often the unknown that scares us. Find an experienced trust and estate attorney who practices estate planning. A general practitioner is not going to understand the nuances of trust and estates law. A good way to vet an attorney is through the county and state bar associations, peruse google reviews or ask a trusted professional for a referral. If you are a senior, accreditation from the National Association of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA) indicates that the attorney specializes in the field. When preparing for your consultation, a good place to begin
is an inventory of your assets. An estate planning attorney will provide a questionnaire to fill out before the meeting that will help you organize. Assets include your home, all real estate interests, businesses, investment accounts, business interests, life insurance policies, and retirement accounts. In addition to your assets, you should provide your attorney with information relating to your income. Income includes salary, retirement distributions, interest and dividends on investments, pensions, and social security benefits. Although an estate planning attorney does not provide financial advice, we often work with a trusted team, including an accountant or financial adviser, to help achieve your estate planning goals.
