Brookhaven Highway Department Offers Educational Programs this Spring
Spring Pee Wee Gardening, Adult Horticulture Classes and Bicycle Rodeo
Bellport Middle School Presents ‘The Little Mermaid Jr.’
Brookhaven Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro is announcing the return of several educational programs being offered to Town of Brookhaven residents this spring. The Traffic Safety Department is hosting a free Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday, March 26, at Safety Town, 249 Buckley Road, Holtsville. The event encourages children to learn how to safely ride their bikes in a mock-roadway, kid-sized setting. Participants of all ages will be evaluated and given feedback on their bicycle-handling abilities, after proper bicycle safety skills are demonstrated. Participants are required to bring their own helmets and bicycles; both will be inspected for safety. This event is by appointment only; those interested should call 631.363.3770 to schedule a time to attend. The Brookhaven Highway Department is offering educational programs including a Bicycle Rodeo, Pee Wee Gardening and Adult Horticulture classes.
The Holtsville Ecology Site & Animal Preserve is offering Spring
The characters from “The Little Mermaid” will come to life when Bellport Middle School presents Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” on Friday, March 25, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 26, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Directed by music teacher Chris Loeschner, the production features a cast of 45 students and Pee Wee Gardening classes for those 3-5 years of age. Children will learn about the environment, animals and plants through crafts and stories. Two different six-week sessions are available beginning either April 12 or 13, for $50. Call 631.451.5330 for class dates/ times and to register. Additionally, the Ecology Site is hosting Adult

William Floyd Student-Musicians Selected for NYSBDA Honor Bands

Fund reallocation would help up to 100 more households In a letter to the Commissioner of the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (NYS OTDA), Supervisor Ed Romaine advised that the Town of Brookhaven will return and reallocate $1.5 million in administrative funds received from the United States Department of Treasury as part of a second round of Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA-2) funding to address the unmet needs of eligible Town of Brookhaven tenants and landlords. In the letter, the Supervisor requested to have the NYS OTDA return the money to the Emergency Rental Assistance Program application portal, which is controlled by NYS OTDA for the benefit of Brookhaven residents. It is estimated that the reallocated funds can help an additional 80 to
100 eligible households that need assistance to pay for rental arrears and prospective rent. Supervisor Romaine said, “Although it appears that the pandemic is nearly behind us, there are still many Brookhaven Town residents who are experiencing economic hardship. The funds are available, and we should do whatever we can to provide assistance so they can stay in their homes. Because the Town worked well with our partnering non-profits and community-based organizations to perform outreach and get the word out the response from residents was overwhelming. Now, we want to help even more people.” In his letter, Supervisor Romaine stressed the urgency of his request since the moratorium on evictions in New York State expired on January 15, 2022. Thiele, Jr. (I-Sag Harbor) that would amend certain provisions of the General Municipal Law to provide that municipalities hold public hearings upon ten days’ notice of a proposed acquisition of property for the purpose of preserving open space, historical or cultural properties, and land for urban renewal projects. This bill would correct the use of undefined and uncertain language that previously failed to give local governments clear rules regarding public notices and hearings. “As New York State continues to promote the protection of historically and

As we all know the last several years have been difficult for families, businesses and the community. We believe it would be in the best interest of all those residing within the William Floyd School District that any additional funds that the School District receives from New York State should be considered temporary. We recognize the last two years have been challenging for the students and staff of the William Floyd School District. We recognize the value of educational enrichment programs, mental health, and other programs to help students meet these challenges. The New York State budget includes a $22.5 million increase in aid. We also recognize this level of increased funding cannot be guaranteed in future years. Therefore, we ask these programs be outsourced on a contractual basis. No permanent positions should be added to the school district to implement these programs. The last two years have been hard on everyone. Property taxes are a significant part of household budgets. School district portion of household property taxes is approximately 67%. Some relief for taxpayers is necessary. The additional $22.5 million of state funding is also an opportunity for taxpayer relief. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN “It’s murder,” said Suffolk County Legislator Al Krupski. “There’s no other way to look at it,” he said last week about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “To attack your neighbor and to kill them. Murder.” In Suffolk, there’s been an outpouring of support for besieged Ukraine. Krupski days before in remarks at a “Rally for Support of Ukraine,” sponsored by St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church of Riverhead, stressed that Ukraine is an independent and democratic nation. He’s also been circulating a letter to fellow members of the Suffolk Legislature stating: “We stand with our allies and friends in the region who are doing everything possible to protect the Ukrainian people and their right to self-determination, many of whom are friends and relatives of residents here in Suffolk County. The Suffolk County Legislature also believes it is an imperative to deescalate the prospect of violence and war in the region for the safety and security of Ukraine and the rest of the global community.” The rally was held on the grounds of Riverhead Town Hall and among the 100 there were

The Brackets are Back!

It’s that time of year where everyone starts talking about brackets. Whether you’re a true college basketball junkie, and know even the small conferences, or you are the woman in the office pool who just likes to get involved, this is an exciting time for every sports fan. Filling out the brackets is an American right. Offices and friends around the country will try to do the impossible, only to be tearing up their sheets within minutes of Friday’s games. You’ll hear the term “Cinderella” more times than on a Disney World trip. You’ll be bludgeoned by the terms “dancing” and “seeds”. And, most importantly you’ll watch the media carefully craft a story that “anyone can win”. To some extent that is true, anyone CAN win one game. But, let’s not kid ourselves, there are no true Cinderella stories. The highest seed to ever win was an 8th seed. Since 1985 a #1 seed has won the
whole thing 14 times. A #2 seed has won 5 times. In fact to even get to the Final Four is usually all chalk. The #1 seeds have made it to the Final Four 68 times, while the 2 seed has done so 35 times. With that in mind let’s take a look at filling out your brackets: Take those #12 seeds - Yes, we have heard for years how the 12 seeds dominate and they are always a good bet. This still holds true, even if we had a few more 5’s playing much better. Since 2012, #5 seeds are about .500 against their 12 seed counterparts. The 12 seeds also clean up in the against the spread department. Don’t forget those #11 seeds Sure, the 5 vs. 12 match ups get all the publicity, but #11 seeds need their day in the sun also. The 11 seeds win at about a 40% rate if we go back to 2011. It was really highlighted in the 2017 tournament, Xavier, USC, and Rhode Island all won as #11

The Yankees have a right-handed lineup and an ideal hitting environment for him. But they also have to sign Aaron Judge at the end of the season. • Trevor Story – poor guy is hitting the market at the wrong
time as there are serious concerns about his throwing arm and the Yankees have a fantastic shortstop prospect on the way in Anthony Volpe. The Yankees can’t sign everybody and they also are righthand heavy. • Seiya Suzuki – arguably the best player in Japan and the best hitter to come over since Hideki Matsui, this right-handed hitter has a pronounced upper cut swing but tremendous plate discipline.
• There are a host of other players that are interesting including Kris Bryant/Michael Conforto/Clayton Kershaw/Carlos Rodon/Nick Castellanos and Kyle Schwarber. What you have to watch for is any of these free agents switching leagues. Should Freeman sign with the Yankees, Kershaw signing with the Texas Rangers or Suzuki going to the San Francisco Giants this will have a huge impact. Most NL only leagues do not allow the drafting of players who are not yet in the league, and thus it makes a lot more sense for these types of drafts to happen as late as possible. One thing that shouldn’t get in the way this year is Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is on April 17th this year. For a guy who is married to a CPA, and a guy who loves fantasy baseball as much as I do, this is welcomed!

History of the American Legion

The Auxiliary administers hundreds of volunteer programs, gives tens of thousands of hours to its communities and to veterans, and raises millions of dollars to support its own programs, as well as other worthwhile charities familiar to Americans. It is all accomplished with volunteers.
March 15th is the American Legion’s 103rd birthday. Back in 1919, the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I asked the officers to suggest ideas on how to improve troop morale. Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt Jr., the eldest son of the 26th President, proposed an organization of veterans. In February 1919, the group formed a temporary committee and selected several hundred officers who had the confidence and respect of the army. On March 15 to 17, 1919, about a thousand delegates from all the units of the American Expeditionary Forces held a caucus meeting, which adopted a tentative constitution and selected the name “American Legion.” It was subsequently charted by the 66th U.S Congress on September 16, 1919. The first post of the Legion, General John Pershing Post Number 1 in Washington DC, obtained the first charter issued to a post of the Legion on May 19, 1919. The St. Louis caucus that same year decided the Legion posts should not be named after living persons and the first post changed its name to George Washington

The Sons of the American Legion formed at the 14th National Convention in Portland Oregon, on September 12-15 1932. Membership is limited to male descendants of members of the American Legion, or deceased individuals who served in the armed forces of the United States during times specified by the Legion.
Post 1. The post completed the constitution and made plans for a permanent organization. It set up temporary headquarters in New York City and began its relief employment, and American programs.

“Transducers - To CHIRP or Not to CHIRP!”

Most boaters know that a transducer is necessary for finding water depth and for fishermen to locate fish. But what type is best for your needs? CHIRP transducers produce 5 to 10 times greater detail and resolution than traditional transducers, making it possible to distinguish between baitfish, underwater structure, and game fish. While traditional transducers operate on 50 kHz and 200 kHz frequencies, CHIRP (compressed high intensity radar pulse) uses a precise pattern of many frequencies within a long duration transmit pulse. This pulse comes from a broadband transducer, creating a sound energy that is 10 to 1,000 times greater than traditional transducers. The signals that return to CHIRP-ready fishfinders (or MFD) create sharp detail on the display. Transducers come in three types:

and some i/o’s, they are available as traditional, CHIRP, side-scan, and/or down-scan. They are not as efficient at high speeds, due to their location and cavitation.

performance, stephull, and trailered boats, these transducers are available in traditional and CHIRP models. There is no drag, hull-penetration, or fouling. The downsides are that they only work on certain hulls, typically fiberglass, and they are
usually large to compensate for signal loss.
3. Thru-Hull
These are widely considered the best type of transducer because the face of the unit is always in the water. They come
in tilted element flush mount or fairing block models. With fairing block models, the block is cut to match the hull deadrise, giving very precise high-speed results, by reducing drag against the face of the transducer and improving the flow of water across the face. Forward-looking transducers are becoming popular, as are live-scan, live-imaging sonar systems, but the price is still a little steep for most boaters. You can eliminate the guesswork and unnecessary and costly replacements by having an Airmar-Certified Installer work with you on selecting the best option for your situation. Dying Without a Will in New York State
Q: I currently have no Will. Who will inherit from my estate if I die? A:
Passing away without a Will is known as dying “intestate”. Many people mistakenly believe that if they die without a Will their assets go to the State. That is incorrect, if there is a blood relative that can be located, the assets do not escheat to the State. New York has a statute that governs distribution of assets for those who die without a Will. The statute lays out a strict inheritance succession and order of priority of who can be appointed as Administrator of the estate. The Administrator, like an Executor under a Will, collects the assets and distributes them according to the law.
An Administration proceeding is initiated by a petition in the Surrogate’s Court in the county where the decedent resided. The petition lays out the known “distributees” and the Petitioner’s right to act as Administrator. New York State law defines a distributee as a “person entitled to take or share
in the property of a decedent under the statutes governing descent and distribution.”
become convoluted. Note that an adopted child is a distributee, a stepchild is not. A child conceived before death, but born after is a distributee. A half-sibling is also considered a distributee. A divorced spouse is not a distributee, but a separated spouse may be.
The following person(s) are distributees, and would inherit pursuant to the New York State intestacy statute:
· If the decedent was married with children, $50,000 and half of the estate to the spouse, and the balance to the children or issue of any predeceased child;
If you do not wish for the above family members to inherit your assets or if you wish to name the Executor, you need a Will. Intestacy laws have been known to impoverish the surviving spouse or spell the end of a family business. Speak with an experienced estate planning attorney to ensure that your estate plan fits your family.
· A spouse and no children, all to the spouse; · Children and no spouse, to the children and issue of any predeceased child; · One or both parents, and no spouse or issue, to the surviving parent or parents; · If no spouse, issue or parents, to siblings or the children of any predeceased siblings; · If none of the above, half passes to the paternal grandparents, or to the children of the paternal
grandparents (aunts and uncles) or children of predeceased aunts and uncles (first cousins) if both grandparents predeceased. The other half passes to the maternal relatives in the same manner. If there is no one surviving on either the paternal or maternal side, the entire estate passes to the other side; or
· If none of the above, half to the children of the predeceased first cousins on the paternal side and half to the children of the predeceased first cousins on the maternal side. If there are no survivors on one side, the whole estate passes to the other side. As you can see, the estate can

Time and tide are now on our side. Most bay constables allow moorings back in the water as of April 1 – and the weather will turn our way too. So, BEFORE you start your engines, ready the boat!
Getting Started – The Trailer
As with any project, starting at the beginning is the best place to start and for “commissioning”, i.e., getting the boat ready for service, the beginning is the front of the boat. For those that trailer their boats, the front of the boat is the trailer. Who wants to go flying down the highway and see their boat doing somersaults along the side of the road? How do you prevent that!? Well, start with the strap that comes out of the winch. Connected to the bow eye, it is the first line of defense. Pay out a few feet and make sure that there aren’t any frayed or torn segments. If there are, you will need to cut out that entire segment and re-attach the strap. If you aren’t sure how, and you need to be since this strap IS the first line of defense, get help from a competent mechanic or dock master. While you’re at it, why not spray the winch and all the moving parts with some penetrating oil. Pay out the entire strap if need be and re-coil it up so that you are sure you get a good covering of the moving parts with penetrating oil. Take a walk around the boat and be sure the binding straps are all equally in good shape. If not, replace them. Don’t forget to check the lights, tires and

lube the bearings. As with the engine grease, pump it in gently. Who wants to push out a seal?
connector is corroded, replace it. This all will keep salt in the air from penetrating your electronics.

Getting Started – The Boat
Check the fuel tank. Is the “sender wire” (wire that runs from the top of the tank (usually) to the fuel gauge) in good condition? How about the filter? And check the fuel lines too. Weak or cracked hoses must be replaced, along with rusted hose clamps. Stainless steel.

As to the boat itself now, open the anchor locker and flake out the anchor rode (the line and chain attaching the anchor to the “eye” in the bottom of your anchor locker/your boat) and lay the anchor “on the hard.” Again, check the shackles for excessive wear as well as the rode itself. Replace or repair, as needed. No sense having the boat float away one day because the anchor rode wore through or a shackle pin gave out. Be sure that the navigation lights (red and green) are working. If not, take the bulb with you to the marine hardware store and replace it – plus spares. The gas is more expensive than a few extra bulb... Your storage area(s) might be forward so open them up and ensure that PFDs, tools, etc, etc, etc are all in good condition. Check that there is no standing water in the compartment. If so, the “limber holes” are clogged and the water can’t get to the bilge to be pumped overboard. Every ounce of weight that wasn’t on the boat when the boat was manufactured changes its centers of buoyancy and gravity. In heavy seas, that just might matter a whole lot. Next are the cockpit and the electronics. Disconnect them, spray them with some “white grease”, reconnect and test the gear. If a

Change the oil – all the oil – including the oil down in the foot of the engine. You’ll need a large straight-slot screw driver for the two screws (high and low) that have to be backed out, a bucket and a quart of oil. Find all the grease fittings and gently pump new grease in until it comes out somewhere else. Don’t forget the steering cable fitting. Be sure that the oil dip-stick is properly seated. Reset the spark plug(s) in the engine before you put the cover back on – unless you are going to work on the prop. Some old models might start up when you turn the prop – and that will definitely ruin your Saturday. Once ready to start the boat, be sure it is in water! You need the coolant! It will smoke at first from the fogging oil you laid in in the Fall but that will quickly pass. If you haven’t checked the PFDs yet,

Countless stories exist of angelic intercession and intervention. When a spirit enters a room, you feel a chill as if a door has been left ajar. When it touches you or when its body passes through you, you feel an Arctic cold. All these signs mark the characteristics of a visiting ghost. But angels are different. No one whoever has seen an angel would mistake it for a ghost. Angels are noted for their warmth and light. All who speak of them agree on their iridescent luminance. They marvel at their brilliant colors or their glowing whiteness. People have reported being flooded with joy, laughter, and happiness. Angels bring aid or messages of hope. Unlike lonely ghosts, they do not wander about
The new fire extinguisher regulations going into effect on April 20, 2022 may seem a little confusing, but if you know the model year of your boat, they boil down to two simple points. If you own a boat that is model year 2018 or newer, you may need to replace your fire extinguishers. 1. In addition to meeting the carriage requirements for the correct number of extinguishers for the size of your boat, they must be labeled as 5-B, 10-B or 20-B, extinguishers labeled with B-I or B-II only are no longer acceptable. 2. Extinguishers must not be more than 12 years old according to the date
3. You only have to get new ones if they are no longer serviceable. Good serviceable conditions are as follows: If the extinguisher has a pressure gauge reading or indicator it must be in the operable range or position. The lock pin is firmly in place. The discharge nozzle is clean and free of obstruction. The extinguisher does not show visible signs of significant corrosion or damage. If you own a boat that is 2017 model year or older (between 1953-2017): You may keep your extinguishers labeled B-I and B-II as long as they are still serviceable, but if there is a date stamped on the bottle, extinguishers must not be more than 12 years old according to that date. OK, there are surely more things to do but you are well on your way to heading out to the high seas – or at least in our bays and creeks. William Blake, poet and artist during England’s Romantic Age, saw angels in trees. He was only a ten-yearold boy who one day looked up and saw angels. Afterward, he could not stop drawing them and writing ecstatic poetry in tribute to them. His depictions included Jacob wrestling with an angel, an angel coming to Abraham, and Joseph Smith founding the Mormon Church after meeting with the angel Moroni. We are told that angels appear as voices, dreams, signs, and visions and that they carry messages. A good question is why they appear at all, much less in one form or another. Some people insist that angels don’t exist because they have never seen one. People ask why they appear only to certain humans. Others believe they come to everyone. Angels come in all sizes, shapes, and colors visible to the physical eye. But, for sure, people are always changed after having seen one. Sometimes

Angels carry messages. The very word in Greek means messenger. The Oxford Universal Dictionary gives the definition: “A ministering spirit or divine messenger; one
of an order of spiritual beings superior to man in power and intelligence, who are the attendants and messengers of the Deity.” Paul writes in chapter 13 in his letter to the Hebrews, “Remember to welcome strangers into your home. There are some who did that and welcomed angels without knowing it.”
