Holtsville Hal Predicts an Early Spring in Brookhaven Town
Following the blizzard that battered Brookhaven Town this past weekend, Holtsville Hal’s 2022 prognostication was welcome news for many. After awaking from his slumber, Hal brushed the snow aside to emerge from his burrow and did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring for the Town of Brookhaven. According to tradition, if a groundhog sees its shadow on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; if not, spring should arrive
early. “After this weekend’s blizzard, I’m sure we are all looking forward to spring arriving on time and keeping our fingers crossed that our resident weatherman maintains his accuracy,” said Superintendent of Highways Daniel Losquadro. “Regardless, the Brookhaven Highway Department remains ready to handle whatever else Mother Nature sends our way during these remaining few weeks of winter.”

The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity track team under the leadership of head coach Ed Noll recently competed in the League I Championships at the Suffolk County Community College Brentwood Campus and had several athletes secure league titles in their respective events. William Floyd High School senior Eddy Vu led the way with victories in the 55-meter and 300-meter races, respectively, and still
remains as one of the fastest sprinters in New York State. Senior Jeff Paez ran the fastest 600 of the meet and put forth a championship effort in his events. Senior Evan Rivera medaled in the mile, while Krishmar Powell won the high jump and placed third in the hurdle. The trio of LaDuke Harris (junior), Dylan Harris (junior) and Justin Cooke (senior) proved once again they are the best jumpers in Suffolk scoring big points in the long jump and triple jump events. The
Colonials finished second overall in the League I team standings and were a few points shy of bringing home the title. Additionally, Eddy Vu kept the momentum going over the weekend at the Milrose Games held at The Armory in New York City against the top-ranked runners from across the country. Eddy ran the 60-meter dash and had a podium finish, setting the all-time Suffolk County record in the process. He

Suffolk County Correction Officers Intercept Meat Cleaver in the Mail

Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Correction Officers intercepted a meat cleaver in a package mailed to the Riverhead Correctional Facility last week. An Amazon.com package addressed to an inmate was delivered to the Riverhead Correctional Facility last week. Upon inspection, a meat cleaver was discovered to be among the contents of the package. The meat cleaver was confiscated and any other allowable items were delivered to the inmate. All packages sent to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility are opened and inspected as per NYS Minimum Standards and

Regulations for Management of County Jails and Penitentiaries. Sheriff Toulon commends the diligent work of his Correction Officers. “Careful inspection and processing of all mail and packages before they enter the correctional facility is critical. Any dangerous item, let alone a large knife, that makes its way into the facility could be deadly for staff and inmates alike. While this large meat cleaver was easy to detect, I thank my staff for their careful work in preventing smaller dangerous weapons and drugs from making their way inside through the US mail.”

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN “We are not giving up on public power,” declared State Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. last week in a presentation before Long Island Metro Business Action titled “Should LIPA be a Municipal Power Company?” Thiele spoke how “the goal of replacing LILCO with a real municipal power company” envisioned by the act passed in 1986 by the State Legislature creating the Long Island Power Authority was never achieved. Instead, a “third-party management model” was adopted in which LIPA has “contracted with a private entity” to operate Long Island’s electrical system. The set-up is “the only one of its kind in the United States of America,” said Thiele. The original vision for LIPA was further “hijacked” in 2013 when then Governor Andrew Cuomo pushed “the so-called LIPA Reform Act.” “I voted no,” he said of the measure, “and it was one of the best ‘no’ votes I ever cast.” Under the scheme promoted by Cuomo, LIPA was “stripped down” and PSEG, the private company which in recent years has run the Long Island electric grid for LIPA,

Some Basics
Would it be any surprise to know that heavier boats need more fuel at a given speed to move through or over the water? So, why lug around gear that you don’t need? Go through all your lockers, lazzerettes and compartments and just get rid of the gear that is sitting around gathering mildew. We all have it – get rid of it. Store in it the garage, in a dock-side locker or just the garbage heap. Do you have an on-board water tank? I had a 25’ Chris-Craft once that had a 40-gallon water tank – which I kept full whether I was going out for the afternoon or an over-night’er. At +8 pounds per gallon, this was like having a lineman from the NY Giants sitting on my boat – in his uniform and gear! Some of the bigger boats have 100-gallon tanks for showers – 3 linemen! Fill up the water tank where and when you are going to use it.
Name that Tune
Your prop is the next most important item to tune. “Tune up my prop you say?” Yes. If your prop (pitch) is too large for the boat, you are wasting energy. Wait – it came with the boat as original equipment. How can it be too large now? Simple – as the boat gets older (i.e., heavier),
environmentalists, business people and governmental representatives. Likewise, on electricity on Long Island we must “have a solution that comes from the bottom up rather than the top down.”
Thiele detailed failures in performance by PSEG during Tropical Storm Isaias in 2020 and the failure of its predecessor private firm running LIPA’s grid, National Grid, in Super-Storm Sandy in 2012. The third-party management model “has proven time and again it has not worked,” he said. The National Grid Sandy debacle was the ostensible reason for Cuomo to engineer “behind closed doors” bringing in Newark, New Jerseybased PSEG and for putting together the LIPA Reform Act which not only continued but expanded the LIPA structure of depending on a private company.

of LIPA contracting out to a private company running the electric grid was Dr. Peter Gollon, a former member of the LIPA board of trustees. Gollon, at the teleconference Friday, said “I agree” with the assemblyman’s points. He said the private contractors “not only have a difference in interest, they don’t have competence.” He said “LIPA staff has the competence to run the utility.” Dr. Gollon, who lives in Huntington Station and is also former energy chair of the Long Island Sierra Club, said he wanted to “give a perspective from the inside.” Thiele and Gaughran are sponsoring a measure creating a Legislative Commission on the Future of the Long Island Power
Authority to lead to a “restructuring” of LIPA. It would be composed of members of the Assembly and the Senate, and there would be an advisory board with wide-ranging representation to assist the commission. It would hold numerous public hearings. “Our goal is to try to get this all done by April 2023,” he said. He said the move to bring LIPA back to its initial concept would be “modeled on the process we used to put together” the Long Island Pine Barrens Protection Act in 1993, which has succeeded in preserving more than 100,000 acres of pine barrens. This process brought together

Asked by several attendees at his presentation about the position of Cuomo’s successor as New York governor, Kathy Hochul, Thiele, a member of the State Assembly for 13 terms, said Hochul becoming governor has “been a breath of fresh air.” She has shown to be “cooperative and collaborative.” He said: “We certainly want to engage with the governor’s office.” After years of Cuomo’s heavyhanded manipulations of LIPA, long needed is a governor sensitive to the peoples’ will and the intentions of the legislation that created LIPA.

It can get very complicated from here when we start talking about bow waves and stern waves interacting and the trim of the engine versus the waterline of the boat, etc. Suffice it to say this: You’ll use less fuel at 20 knots than at 25 knots and you’ll use less fuel at all speeds if you REDUCE your wetted surface (trim the bow up a bit and experiment at a fixed throttle setting to see what your speed-over-the-water does at a given setting) by using your trim tabs – and reducing the weight of the boat (back to the basics!) so the “V” doesn’t sit so deeply in the water naturally.
A ding in the prop (never hit the bottom, you say?) can take as much as 10% in fuel efficiency out of the power-plant. Think of it this way. You ask for 20 gallons and the fuel tender puts 18 in your tank, pours 2 gallons down the fuel storage sump and charges you for 20 gallons. Make sense to you, Bunky?
Let’s stop for a second and review some maritime math. For vessels under sail, the longer the “wetted surface”, the faster the boat can go. This is why, in sail boat races, boats are assigned handicaps like golfers to normalize this issue. In theory, the handicap eliminates any structural advantages that a 25’ sail boat has over a 16’ sail boat so it is then all about the crew. The formula for a boat’s “hull speed” (sometimes called the “displacement speed”, and soon you will understand why) is:
Last year, LIPA conducted its own study on “options” that concluded that there would be “potential savings” of “$65 to $75 million a year” and higher “reliability” if it operated the grid itself. But Cuomo, he said, “shortcircuited” further consideration, and LIPA, with the majority of its board appointed by the governor, voted for an extension of its contract with PSEG. So, the theoretical hull speed of the 25’ sail boat is 6.7 knots and the 16’ sail boat’s hull speed is 5.4 knots. In an interesting historical side note, this little fact was what caused a number of the great sailing clipper ships to mysteriously sink. How? Well, the captain throws on more sail to make the ship go faster. As you know, a ship’s form, viewed from bow looking aft, is to some extent a big, long “V” – the bottom of the “V”
is in the water and the top, planked over, is the deck area. Well, the only way for the ship to respond to the increased power from the sails was for the “V” to dig deeper into the water so there was more wetted surface to service the power. More sail? More power. This drove the “V” deeper into the water – until the “V”, or the ship, drove herself under the water and sank. But wait. I have a 25’ boat and she goes considerably faster than 6.7 knots. How? She uses horsepower to defeat the physics of the “hull speed” equation – also known as the

BY TOM BARTON This year, for the first time ever, New Yorkers can legally bet on the Super Bowl. This is refreshing for so many around the state and the country that now have legalized sports betting. We are up to 33 states with legalized sports betting, up from just 20 for last year’s big game, and New York is expected to absolutely crush all previous numbers. There is an expectation that New York alone could gross over one billion dollars in Super Bowl bets, even Dr. Evil would be impressed. With that being said, let’s take a look at the game itself. For the first time in 19 seasons we have a Super Bowl without Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Big Ben or the San Francisco 49ers. It is also just the second time ever that we have two #1 overall draft picks going head to head (Manning vs. Cam Newton in 2016). This matchup was so unlikely that if you had such foresight to see these two clash for the championship Bet MGM had odds of 500 to 1 on this very showdown in the preseason. The Rams were the more expected pick to make it here after their brash moves. Los Angeles wined, dined and then landed Mathew Stafford away from Detroit in a monumental move before the season began, but they weren’t done there. They then went on to sign disgruntled Odell Beckham and made a trade for former
Super Bowl MVP Von Miller. The star power for the Rams is very Hollywood -esque. This team has the best WR in the game in Cooper Kupp, a dynamic young RB, Aaron Doland on defense is being called the greatest of all time and Jalen Ramsey is a true shutdown cornerback. Not to be outdone, the Bengals have stars of their own. A WR crew that consists of Tyler Boyd and Tee Higgins would be considered one of the best in the league, but the Bengals didn’t play it safe in the draft. Electing to skip some needed positions to make their franchise QB happy and grabbed his college teammate Ja’Marr Chase. Chase at -250 is the odds on favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award. And then there is the man everyone is talking about, Joe Burrow. Burrow is the X factor in all of this. He has shown throughout his college and brief pro career that not only is he uber talented, but he has that ‘it factor’ as well. He is as clutch as anyone in the game, and his team responds to his brash and borderline cocky style. Maybe that is what is needed to take down the flash and glit of LA... in Los Angeles. The Rams are only the second team, last year’s Bucs were the first, to play a Super Bowl in front of it’s home crowd. The Bengals, though, enjoy this underdog role. They were

underdogs in the Divisional round against the #1 seeded Titans. Underdogs by more than a touchdown on the road against all powerful Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs and now face another daunting task on the road as a 4 1/2 point underdog. The Rams mortgaged their future for a chance at a ring. They essentially traded all their high draft picks for the next few seasons to win this next game, a game they have in their home building, and a game where they have a decided advantage. Joe Burrow however stands in their way. Burrow has become the favorite slayer in his career. Can he slay the favorite one more time?

A quarterback has won Super Bowl MVP 9 of the last 12 times and 15 quarterbacks have won out of the last 22 times. So it isn’t a good bet to take anyone besides Burrow or Stafford. They are the favorites of course. But if you want to look outside of them a WR has won Super Bowl MVP four times since 2006. This is one of the best wide
receiver laden Super Bowl’s we’ve ever had and the lines show that. Cooper Kupp is +425, you can get Odell at 18 to 1 odds and Chase at the same 18 to 1 odds, even Tee Higgins might be worth a look at 33 to 1. If you like running backs, well they have won 7 Super Bowl MVP since 1967. Akers is 33 to 1 and Mixon is 40 to 1. If you think defense will rule the day you can get Von Miller, trying for his 2nd Super Bowl MVP at 33 to 1, Aaron Donald at 18 to 1, Ramsey comes in at 40 to 1 and Trey Hendrickson at 80 to 1 is worth a look. But, be warned there has only been three defensive players to win MVP in the last 25 years.

Small Ball Stats Part I

I know I am going to get a lot of grief for making this comment, but heck, maybe readers can appreciate some of the finer points of the game if you give it a serious read. ESPN ranked the Top 100 players in the game. They have Ken Griffey Jr. listed as the 13th best player of all time. I openly question that he was a little overrated. What? Some of you shrieked just now? Hear me out. Griffey retired having hit 630 home runs. There is a place for that in the Hall of Fame for certain. And he does belong on the Top 100. This is why fantasy baseball analysts are hated. “Statheads” such as myself can be reviled because we see things that can make you question popular perceptions. But let’s get it out there. Craig Biggio had a better season in 1997 and 1998 than Ken Griffey Jr., and is unquestionably one of the best “little stats” players in major league baseball history. Little stats don’t appear on the back of major league players’ trading cards. Little stats don’t flash up on the screen when you watch a television broadcast of Yankees vs. Red Sox. Nobody checks off the ballot of that year’s

All-Star game ballot based on what the voter knows about little stats. And yet, there is not a baseball coach in America that doesn’t know the value of his respective players’ little stats. And what are these little stats. Two of the most important are GDP and HBP, ground into double play and hit by pitch. We all remember Walt Matthau telling Rudy Stein to lean into a pitch to get on base in the movie “Bad News Bears”, but this is a very relevant stat and some would dare say an art form. I graduated from Kings Park High School and was a year ahead of Biggio at that school. So I will put that out there for anyone who wants to claim I am biased. But the numbers back me up. In 1997 Biggio led the National League in runs scored with 147. It is the highest number of runs scored for the entire 20th century. An entire century. Even more amazing he followed up in 1998 with 146 runs scored. He hit 56 doubles in both seasons. But it is also amazing that Biggio stole 47 and 50 bases in a pair of seasons where he was already standing on 2nd base after his plate appearance. 3rd base is a much tougher base to steal than

2nd base and 56 times in both seasons Biggio was standing on 2nd base. There are only two players in major league history with 50 doubles and 50 stolen bases in the same season. Rogers Hornsby is that other guy. Still you ask, Griffey hit 630 home runs. How is Biggio better? Biggio did not ground into a single double play in the 1997 season. Of fair significance is that I saw Biggio hit into a double play in the Spring of 1984 vs. Commack North in front of a bevy of pro scouts. Ken Griffey Jr. hit into 12 double plays in 1997.
Biggio was left on first base 12 more times than Griffey keeping his team alive with a chance to plate him. Hit by pitches? Biggio was hit by 34 pitches in 1997 to Griffey’s 8 or 26 times more. So on 38 more occasions Biggio was still on the basepath more than Griffey because of small stats. Is it any surprise he scored more times than any player in the National League in a century of baseball games played. Every year when talking about the Hall of Fame a discussion ensues discounting players who are seen as compilers. After
reviewing his 1997 season please don’t try to argue with me that Craig Biggio was a compiler. He should have received votes for the MVP in 1997. Playing in Houston though he didn’t get national recognition. But there is a little problem with Griffey in the compiler department. He made the major leagues at age 19, an incredibly precocious age. Biggio entered major league baseball at age 22 after attending Seton Hall University. Griffey was drafted out of high school. Griffey had already compiled 478 base hits before Biggio entered major league baseball at the same age. Griffey retired at age 40. Biggio retired at age 41. It is somewhat a little short that Griffey finished with 2,781 hits and Biggio finished with 3,060 hits despite the fact that Griffey got off to a 478 hit head start. Griffey made a lot of highlight reels for spectacular catches in center field. Biggio started out at catcher and somehow still had enough gas in his legs to steal 50 bases in his 11th season at age 32. He also converted to 2B and ended his career in CF. Co-ops Versus Condos

Q: Can you explain the difference between a condo and a co-op? A:
Condominiums (“condos”) and housing cooperative (“co-ops”) seem very similar. Generally, both are apartments within a multi-unit building. The major difference lies in the ownership structure. When you buy a condo, you receive a deed and own an individual unit along with undivided interest in the common elements. Co-op owners are granted a proprietary lease and receive shares in the nonprofit corporation that owns every part of the building.
Things To Consider When Buying a Condo
As a condo owner you own the interior of the unit. The condo association owns the common area. This can be very convenient since the association handles all common area maintenance, such as repairs, management, maintenance, snow plowing and general upkeep. Of course, it comes at a price. Condo owners pay a monthly maintenance fee in exchange for the services.
Condo fees vary depending on the size of the unit and type of common elements. Sometimes condo associations impose an additional “assessment fee” for services not covered in the regular monthly fees. An assessment fee is usually applied when the association does not have sufficient reserve funds to cover emergency repairs. Your real estate attorney will perform due diligence, examine recent engineer reports and board minutes, to determine if any special assessments are anticipated. Condo associations are run by an elected board of directors that establish rules each unit owner must follow. When buying a condo, it is important to familiarize yourself with these bylaws. What if a condo association limits the number of pets you can have or prohibits subleasing?

A co-op buyer does not receive a piece of real estate but is granted a proprietary lease and is issued shares in the corporation. The

Whether to buy a condo or coop is a matter of personal choice, finances and the housing market. The majority of New York City apartments are co-ops. Condos offer more flexibility when it comes to renovations and purchase financing is often easier to obtain. Co-ops are often less expensive to purchase but have higher monthly fees. In cities like New York, the decision often comes down to availability and whether an applicant is able to pass the co-op vetting process. As we approach Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, the Civil War rises to a top subject. However, there is very little information on the mental trauma caused by the war. History tells us that the Civil War combat, by compassion, was concentrated and personal, featuring large scale battles in which bullets rather than bombs or missiles caused over 90 percent of the carnage. Most troops fought on foot, marching in tight formation and firing at relatively close range. As a result, units were often cut down enmasse, showering survivors with blood, brains and body parts of their comrades. History states; “During the Civil War (1860-1865) nearly 700,000 Americans lost their lives. Another 1 million were seriously wounded.” However, history leaves out the fact that disease killed twice as many
men as combat. There were tens of thousands of wounded veterans who were without arms or legs. Antibiotics had not been discovered, so an infected limb was a likely death sentence, and amputation was the only answer. During the long stretches in crowded unsanitary camps, men were haunted by the prospect of an agonizing and inglorious death away from the battlefield. Diarrhea was among the most common killers. Desertion was much higher than in any other American conflict before or since. If caught the deserter was publicly executed. Most Civil War servicemen were farm boys in their teens or early 20s, who had rarely if ever traveled far from home. The enlistments typically lasted three years and they couldn’t phone or contact their loved ones. That contributed to what Civil War doctors

At least 100,000 veterans suffered from “Soldier’s Heart” now called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Thus, on March 3, 1865, a month before the war ended, President Lincoln authorized the first national asylum to provide medical and convalescent care
throughout the country. The structures were massive and some extended over several acres. They were initially designed to house 250 patients, but quickly were straining with as many as 1,000 patients. At some other asylums, such as the Athens Asylum in Ohio,
the number climbed to 2,000. Tens of thousands of those patients died and were buried behind the asylums. In 1923, many of the asylums were changed over to hospitals offering medical care for the veterans of World War I. Northport VA Medical Center is one of those asylums that converted to a hospital at that time. Fortunately, today we have not only the hospitals available, but an understanding and methods to help treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Moral Injuries (MI). Those suffering can be helped without being sent to an asylum. Doctors can treat PTSD and the clergy can be a great help with MI. Both the VA doctors and the clergy not only can help you, but do not have to tell anyone about that help.

I recently had a parent reach out to me who was feeling so guilty that she was not able to purchase three new iPhones for her three teenaged children. Her children expressed that their phones were very dated and that all their friends had the latest version of the iPhone. Of course, we don’t want our children to feel left out or not provided for, but let’s do a reality check here. For most of us, there are always bills that need to be paid, unexpected expenses, monthly household costs, food shopping, clothes, school supplies and more. Daily life costs money and one can only hope that the weekly paycheck is enough to get by on not including the extras. It seems as if parents are in competition with one another to give their children the most and the best: best house, best phone, best clothes, best sneakers, best toys, and so on. There is nothing wrong with that, if it’s possible. However, that is a lot of pressure to place upon yourself. You might even start feeling guilty
or ashamed that you just cannot buy your child all the things that his/her friends seem to have. I say stop right there! Shift your focus. What is truly more important here? What do you want your child to learn in life? It is much more important to teach your child strong values like hard work, saving money, careful spending, appreciation for what you already have and gratitude for parents who go to work to create a stable home. Upgrading to the latest iPhone does not even make this list. Instead of wracking your brain to figure out how you can buy that iPhone, why not help your child problem solve and figure out a way he/she can earn money and buy it for himself/ herself? I am not a fan of paying our own children for household chores. If we are a family all living under the same roof, then we all have the responsibility, as a family, to share in daily tasks to maintain a clean, organized, healthy home. You may disagree and pay your child for chores.
“How Much Can One Parent Really Spend on Each Child?”
That’s fine. It just does not work in my family. I feel you should encourage your child to find part-time work to earn the money to pay for the extra items that he/she wants. He/she can also ask neighbors if they need any help and get paid for that too. This will teach your child a good work ethic,
the value of money, and learn how far a dollar will only go. This may also help determine a future career path for your child. He/She will better understand how much things actually cost, how many hours he/she has to work for that item and if it is really worth it. One would hope that the child will also view how
hard you work in a different light now as well. When you switch from material to real, your child will become ideal. An iPhone will last only one more year until the next upgrade. Teaching your child life skills will last them throughout their adult lives.
