As we proceeded through this inclusive process, progressive Albany Democrats politicized the re-districting process by gerrymandering the boundaries of all Congressional Districts for the sole purpose of eliminating Republicans from Federal Office and reducing the voices of voters. This political gerrymander by progressive Albany Democrats is most evident in the drawing of the new First Congressional District. The One-Party Democrat Rule, headed by Gov. Hochul, dramatically changed the First
District where now it includes parts of ALL 10 towns of Suffolk County and even stretches into Nassau County. This political gerrymander required the Suffolk County Republican Party Executive Committee, with limited time, to consider additional candidates who were not part of the old First Congressional District. Among those candidates considered is Nick LaLota, a former elected Village Trustee, Annapolis graduate, Naval Veteran, former Commissioner of the Board of Elections, and family man. Based on his outstanding record, experience, sense of
duty, service to communities and veterans, and his roots within our Republican Party, the Suffolk County Republican Party Executive Committee unanimously selected Nick LaLota as the Party’s nominee for the First Congressional District. This selection was re-enforced by the Suffolk County Conservative Party, which also unanimously selected Nick LaLota as its party’s nominee for Congress. County Clerk Releases 2021 Annual Report

Suffolk County Clerk Judy Pascale today released the 2021 Annual Report highlighting increases in both production and revenue.
According to the report, the total revenue in the County Clerk’s Office increased by 36% to $689,094,806. “The real estate market continued to thrive in 2021 as both sales and mortgage refinancing continued at near record paces. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted many segments of the economy. Fortunately, the real estate market has not been one of them,” stated County Clerk Judy Pascale. One of the largest increases in revenue was from the New York State Mortgage Tax. Mortgage Tax, which is a 1.05% tax on mortgages, increased by 35% to $255,270,402.44 in 2021.
The impact of the revenue increase is felt both locally and in Albany, since roughly half of the collected Mortgage Tax is distributed to Suffolk’s towns and villages, and the other half to Albany. Mortgage Tax collection increased in all of Suffolk’s ten towns. Suffolk’s eastern towns realized the greatest increases in Mortgage Tax collection: Southampton 51%; East Hampton 46%; Shelter Island 42%, Southold 36%; and Riverhead 35%. Every town increased by at least 25% over 2020. New York State Transfer Tax, a .25% tax on the sale price of homes, totaled $114,070,805 in 2021, an increase of 33%. Also,
the Peconic Bay Community Preservation Tax, a 2% tax on the sale price of homes in Suffolk’s five east end towns, increased by 51% to $210,786,185 in 2021. East end sale soared again in 2021, increasing in every town and by 30% overall. Overall, land record recordings in the Suffolk County Clerk’s office increased by 23% to 193,814. One area where revenue and activity decreased is in Supreme Court filings. Supreme Court cases, which include foreclosures, divorces, and other significant lawsuits, decreased slightly to 21,036. Judgments of foreclosure still remain extremely low as the State had
continued with moratoriums on foreclosures. Additionally, Judgments of Divorce and Separation Agreements jumped by 29% to 2,646. New business filings decreased by 5% to 3,356. “The tremendous increase in revenue over the last three years is attributable to the strong real estate market, particularly on the East End, where sales prices continue to reach new levels. Home prices have continued to increase due to the short supply of housing so it will be interesting to see the impact on sales and prices once the moratoriums on foreclosures are lifted and inventory increases ,” concluded Pascale.

The Yaphank Historical Society Continues to Preserve the History of Yaphank

The Yaphank Historical Society’s mission is to collect, preserve and interpret the history of the lovely town of Yaphank and the surrounding area. Currently led by President Robert Kessler, the society was founded in 1974 to save the Hawkins House from demolition. Yaphank’s Historic District is about a mile long and runs along Main Street parallel to Yaphank Lake. During the 19th century, Yaphank was known for its mills (saw, grist, fulling). With electric power arriving in the early 20th century, the mills were forced to shut down. Yaphank then became a popular summer destination for families who wanted to vacation in the homes that bordered the lake. Camp Upton, which was located where Brookhaven National Laboratory currently sits, was a point of embarkation for the United States Army during World War l. During World War ll, Camp Upton was used as an Army induction center. The Yaphank Historical Society has restored and taken over the stewardship for four historic 19th century houses in the Yaphank Historic District. These houses are: 1. The Hawkins House was built around 1850 and is currently owned by the Suffolk County Parks Department. The address is 4 Yaphank Avenue. Because of the incredible detail in the restoration and the historical significance locally and nationally, the Robert Hewlett Hawkins House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, our nation’s highest historical citation.
2. The Mary L. Booth House was constructed in 1829 approximately and is currently owned by the Suffolk County Parks Department. It is located at 230 East Main Street. Mary Louise Booth was born here in 1831. She is the author of “History of New York”, the founding editor of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine, secretary of the first Women’s Rights Convention and an active abolitionist. 3. The Homan-Gerard House is also owned by SC Parks Department and was erected around 1820. It can be found directly across from the Hawkins House. It is a unique example of Federal and Greek Revival architecture. Brookhaven Town records show that in 1762, a sawmill was built on the river adjacent to the house. 4. The Swezey-Avey House, owned by the Town of Brookhaven and built around 1840, is located at 19 Mill Road and is home to Yaphank Historical Society Headquarters. A Research Library, rooms for exhibits, meetings and community programs are all found here. The restoration of these four houses was made possible with volunteers, grants and maintenance help from the municipal governments. In fact, a recent grant from the Robert David Gardiner Foundation in the amount of $10,000.00 was awarded to YHS. The funds will be used to clean and restore the Hawkins Family Cemetery. The society is very proud of its accomplishments as they should be. They thoughtfully plan out community and school activities which are all free. They have free

Summer Sunday Tours from 1-4 PM every Sunday in July and August. The third Thursday of each month is the YHS’s general meeting which takes place at 7:30 PM at the SwezeyAvey House. Students Cook Up Soul Food Staples for Black History Month To

Multicultural Association invited History Month. Club members notable soul food chef Cheryl Grigg also sponsored a schoolwide to teach students how to make bingo session where participants soul food staples, including fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and collard greens on Feb. 16. During the event, students worked closely with Grigg, owner of Chara’s Kitchen and Catering, to make the dishes from scratch. They then had an opportunity to taste all the culinary creations that they prepared.

Eastport-South Manor Junior-Senior High School student-artist Sydney Flores has been selected as the 2022 16th Anniversary Shanti Fund Peace Art Calendar competition 10th grade winner after review by a panel of judges. She will receive a cash prize and an award at a presentation ceremony this spring for her incredible work. Shanti Fund is a Long Islandbased charitable organization, in existence since 1995. Since 2001, the organization has focused on promoting the value systems of world peace leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Mother Teresa and others.

Woman Killed, Man and Infant Injured in Fire not able to escape the home and was found dead once the fire was extinguished. Stephen Ortner, 30, and his son Leo Ortner were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, where
the father was treated for serious injuries and his child for non-life-threatening injuries. There were no other occupants of the home and no other injuries were
reported. A preliminary investigation has determined the cause of the fire to be non-criminal in nature.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating a fire that killed an East Setauket woman and injured a man and infant early Friday morning. Sixth Precinct officers responded to the home, located at 360 Old Town Road, after a 911 caller reported a fire at the location
at 12:01 a.m. Stephen Ortner, a resident of the home, was able to escape through a second-floor window onto a roof ledge and hand his 10-monthold son to a passerby below, who then handed the child to rescuers. Ortner was then able to climb down to the ground. Lisa Ostrowski, 31, the mother of the child, was

SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The plan by the Democratic majorities in the New York State Legislature for redistricting Congressional Districts, including those on Long Island, is an extreme case of gerrymandering. It illustrates what that word is about. The “gerry” is for Massachusetts Governor Elbridge Gerry and how redistricting was done under him in 1812. The “mander” is for salamander— what the configuration of one Massachusetts Senate district looked like. Now it’s salamander time on Long Island for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Consider what has been done to the lst Congressional District. I’ve covered lst C.D. politics since I started as a journalist in Suffolk in 1962. The district has long consisted of the five East End towns, all of Brookhaven Town and most of Smithtown. “Preservation of communities of interest” is important when it comes to redistricting which is done to reflect population changes after the national census every decade. “Redistricting Criteria,” a publication of the National Conference of State Legislatures, says “traditional districting principles or criteria” include “preservation of communities of
There has been a relative fit in the lst CD. The East End towns are semi-rural. Much of Brookhaven Town and Smithtown are countrylike. Both Democrats and GOPers have represented the district. But now, in the Democratic push to load the lst C.D. with areas solid with Democratic voters, the lst C.D. would change. All five East End towns would stay in it—other than GOP-leaning areas in southwestern Southampton Town. Eliminated there would be a stretch that includes Westhampton and East Quogue. Then the lst C.D. would take in only the northern half of Brookhaven which includes plenty of Democrats connected to Stony Brook University. The southern half of the town with its many

Washington’s Early History
The Washington family was a wealthy Virginia family that lived in Westmoreland County. George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, and was the first of six children. His father Augustine had four additional children from his first marriage. One story that has to be covered for starters is why George’s father never yelled at him. The author of his biography, Mason Locke Weems gives one reason, but there are two other reasons. First, the father did not yell at George because he
still held the hatchet in his hands. However, the truth is that the story is a myth and George never cut down the tree. Decades later William Holmes McGuffey composed a series of grammar school textbooks that included the cherry tree story. In 1751, while on a trip with his brother Lawrence, George contracted smallpox which immunized him but left his face slightly scarred. George’s step-brother Lawrence who served as adjutant general of the Virginia militia and inspired George to seek a commission. In December 1752, Washington, who had no previous military experience, was made commander of one of the four militia districts. By 1759, Washington had resigned his commission and was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, where

interest.” The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law defines communities of interest as reflecting “groups of individuals who are likely to have similar legislative concerns, and who might benefit from cohesive representation.” It says states across the nation consider this “in drawing district lines.” The provision is included in some state constitutions, it goes on, and in other states is among the “guidelines by the bodies conducting redistricting.”

Republican-voting communities is out. Smithtown is cherry-picked and would include Democratic-inclined Commack. The district would then extend west into the Town of Islip and pull in heavily Democratic Brentwood, Central Islip and North Bay Shore. Further west, it would take in the northern portion of Babylon Town, which votes reliably Democrat, and a southern part of the Town of Huntington including Democraticvoting Dix Hills. Going further west, the lst C.D. would take in the Democratic bastions of Plainview and Bethpage—in Nassau County. With due respect to Plainview
and Bethpage—how do they constitute “communities of interest” with Setauket or Shelter Island or Wading River or Rocky Point? Also, with the reconfiguring of the lst C.D., Suffolk County would for the first time in decades not have a Congressional district consisting of only Suffolk. What will be done to the GOP areas cut out of the lst C.D.? Most will be moved into the 2nd C.D made up of the Republican-voting southern portions of the Towns of Islip and Babylon and southern Nassau, all apparently being written off as a lost Democratic cause. The gerrymandering in the Democratic plan also applies to the 3rd C.D., still based in Huntington
The gerrymandering is seen as greatly assisting Democratic chances in the lst and 3rd C.D.’s. In 2020 Donald Trump won by 4% in the lst C.D. The remapping of the lst C.D. is projected as allowing the Democratic candidate for president in 2024 to win the district by 11%. combat spread of the disease. This became a major deterrent to enlistments and posed the risk of debilitating the army and tipping the balance of power during America’s first war. Washington’s strategy was to bring the balance of power through the thencapital of Philadelphia, and through Morristown, New Jersey, following the Battle of Princeton. Washington’s strategy was largely successful. Washington proved to be a better general than military strategist. His strength lay not in his genius on the battlefield but in his ability to keep the struggling colonial army together. His troops were poorly trained and lacked food, ammunition and other supplies. However, Washington was able to give them direction and motivation.

This NBA season was supposed to be all about New York basketball. The Nets were the overall favorites by oddsmakers to win the Championship and every Brooklyn fan had dreams of Durant, Harden, and Kyrie torching opponents all season, while the Knicks were rebuilding but showing some great growth and were thought to be a playoff team, who could do even bigger things. As we sit at the All Star break one thing is clear, New York basketball has been a massive disappointment. The Nets’ dreams of watching their new “Big 3” went up in smoke almost immediately as Irving was not with the team because of his freedom of choice decision. Harden is now a Philadelphia 76er,
after being traded away last week, and Durant has once again dealt with a myriad of injuries. Brooklyn is still somehow listed as the co favorites to win the Eastern Conference but has fallen out of favor as the NBA champs in the odds. They entered the weekend as the 8th seed, and are closer to falling totally out of the playoffs, as they are being a #1 seed, which was the expectation. The Knicks have made less drama off the court, but on the court the results have been almost as poor. New York went into the All Star weekend 3 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot at 9 games under .500. Their highly vaunted defense, which carried them last year, is allowing 1 1/2 points more than the offense scores and

The feedback from mock drafts is clear and obvious. Third base depth is a problem this year in redraft leagues. The position is not sizing up as deep owners in redraft leagues are panicked. I am not that concerned in a mixed dynasty league. I am paying close attention in my NL-only redraft league. This is not the season to be drafting 1st through 4th in a snake format in my estimation. I am not concerned in dynasty for different reasons. Let’s dive in. When you select 1st through 4th in a snake format draft, it can take a long time for the next pick to come back to you. For example, if you draft 1st, your next pick will be pick #24 in your draft. While it is true that the 25th pick will also be yours, for half of the pairing you are waiting 23 picks to go by. This does leave you susceptible to a run being made on a position. This often happens when owners sense that all of the quality candidates at a given position are being snapped up. This is expected to happen this year at Third Base. If you select anywhere from 5th through 9th in a snake format, the amount of pick selected in between your draft

There are guys in that tiering with clearly disturbing and unreliable injury histories such as Nolan Arenado.

And yes, I am sure that most of you noticed that my final player listed is on magazine covers as the Top Shortstop prospect in baseball at the moment. But Kansas City has a Gold Glove caliber shortstop at the moment in Nicky Lopez, who hit .300 last year with 22 stolen bases. Bobby Witt Jr. I expect to play 3rd base this year. And yes, a reduction in spring training time due to the lockout does put that scenario in danger. But Witt is a
serious threat to steal 30 bases and has tremendous upside. Bobby Witt Jr. could also hit .230 as a rookie and we know how many top ranked prospects can struggle as rookies. Hence the Tier 4 ranking. Yoan Moncada coming out of Cuba was as highly touted a prospect as there was. And he is good. But he just hasn’t developed into the automatic 20/20 player some had projected him to be. You also have to remember that the

Cincinnati’s SS prospect Jose Barrero has 20 home run potential, isn’t being drafted high in mock drafts going on at the moment, and plays very reliable defense. If you get closed out of the Top 4 tiering I have laid out above, watch for him in spring training box scores. And see if he is winning the full time job in Cincinnati.

I Have GPS – So Who Needs a Compass!?

We’ve written about GPS, the wonder of the 21st (really 20th!) century, many times. It is truly one of the simplest yet most powerful aids to navigation ever invented. And it just keeps getting better and better. So, who needs a compass? You do. This column is all about that.
A Candle Held Where?
What if I told you that the signal from the GPS satellites reaches your boat with the intensity of a candle – held in Los Angeles while you are in New York…? Yes, that’s how it is designed. So, what happens if the weather really becomes foul? You can lose your GPS signal, that’s what! It takes a lot because of the redundancies built in but it can happen. I know it, first-hand. And if you have to leave your boat due to emergency conditions, are you going to rip your GPS out of your dashboard and take it with you into the raft..? No. As a matter of fact and of safety, right next to my compass, which sits above my indashboard GPS system, is a handheld, old fashioned compass. If I leave that boat, the handheld compass comes with me.
Where is the Magnetic North Pole?
Most of us have seen diagrams or pictures of magnetic waves, just like those that come out of household magnets, coming out of the North and South Poles, encircling the Earth. The iron core of the Earth spins at
high speed and creates this magnetic field. Of interest, the magnetic forces don’t emanate from the top of the world, i.e, the true North Pole. Right now, the “Magnetic North Pole” is just north of Hudson Bay. When George Washington was leading the United States, Magnetic North was near Norway. If you look on any paper chart for the “compass rose”, it shows in the very center what is called “Variation”, i.e., from the area that the chart covers, what is the angular difference, i.e., Variation, from True North to Magnetic North. Here, it is 14-degrees west, i.e., your compass points 14-degrees too far west at Magnetic North versus where True North lies. This means that when your compass is pointing to Magnetic North, you would turn the boat 14-degrees to the east (014-degrees) to be pointing to True North! BTW, this is interesting – but largely meaningless since all compasses sold above the Equator point to Magnetic North. But it is important to be aware of Variation.

Frankly, more important than Variation to the average boater is Deviation. Deviation is the sum of all the forces within your boat that keeps your compass from pointing to Magnetic North. What? Case in point: a number of years ago, I was doing USCGAux vessel exams at a local marina when one skipper came up to me and asked me if I could look at his
what your boat’s compass Deviation is so that, if you do have to use your compass in lieu of your GPS, you can compensate appropriately. Over enough distance, even a degree or two can add up to significant differences. If you don’t have a GPS, it is a bit more complicated but it can be done. Get your paper charts out, mark a rhumb line between two points that lie at a given magnetic course between each other. Run down that line and record what your compass is reading versus what your paper chart told you the compass should be registering. The difference is Deviation.

But away I went with this skipper to see if I could at least isolate the problem. We stepped on his boat and, just before taking his seat at the helm, he removed his wallet from his hip pocket (which held his police badge within) and placed it next to his compass. While he was fumbling with the boat keys, I literally watched his compass clock around and point at his wallet/police badge! I asked him, “Skipper, why do you put your wallet there?” He said, “It kills my sacroiliac if I sit on my wallet!” I said, “Keep your eye on your compass while I move your wallet.” As I lifted it away from the compass, the compass clocked back and pointed to Magnetic

North. “You fixed my compass!” No, I simply removed a source of Deviation. Metallic objects (or magnetic objects like radio speakers) near your compass will “fool” your compass into thinking that that object is Magnetic North. How can you tell what the Deviation is of your compass? Well, if you have a GPS, it will be easy – all you need is a mile or so of calm water and you can run down the rhumb lines of the four cardinal points and record the differences between what the physical compass is reading from the GPS course you are running. Of interest, Deviation “deviates” differently at a given compass course so you need to check at least the four cardinal courses (when we develop our deviation tables for new boats, we measure at least 16 compass headings.) Well, happily for this sorry skipper, there is a way to create a crude compass with a watch if you find yourself in such a state. Simply point the hour hand at the sun. Halfway between the hour hand (the sun) and 12 on your watch lies South. If you know where South is, you know where North, East and West are... Don’t have an old fashioned watch..? Draw one and line it up as it were on your wrist. It works! Sole Benefit Trust vs. Supplemental Need Trust
What is the difference between a sole benefit trust and a supplemental needs trust?
All supplemental needs trusts (“SNT”) are created for the sole benefit of a disabled individual. An SNT is designed to provide support for a beneficiary without jeopardizing their receipt of Medicaid and SSI. In general, an individual receiving such government benefits can only have limited assets in their name. A supplemental needs trust provides funds that supplement not supplant government benefits. The trust assets can be used to enhance the disabled individual’s quality of life. Some examples being clothes, entertainment, educational and recreational expenses, and transportation.
Since the trust contains the disabled beneficiary’s assets, the trust must contain a “payback” provision. That is, if there are any assets left at the end of the beneficiary’s life, they must be used to pay back Medicaid for any cost of care expended. Only after Medicaid recoups can the remaining funds, if any, be distributed to other individuals.
There are two main types of supplemental needs trusts, first party and third party. A first party supplemental needs trust is funded with the beneficiary’s own assets while the beneficiary is under age 65. This type of SNT may be created by the disabled individual, a parent, grandparent, guardian or the court.
A third party supplemental needs trust is one created by a third party for the benefit of a disabled individual of any age and funded with that third party’s assets. It can be created during the life of the grantor or at the grantor’s death. The latter is a testamentary trust used to pass an inheritance to a

As you can gather, the appropriate type of SNT depends on the circumstances. Due to the complexities, anyone planning to leave assets to a disabled individual should consult an estate planning attorney. Likewise, your personal injury attorney and estate planning attorney should work together on any settlement for a disabled individual. Many times the need for government benefits is necessary for reasons not related to monetary support. Meditation provides a break from concentration on goals. In meditation we get in touch with that place in ourselves where we are perfect without having to do anything. The opposite of this is being attached to planning, analyzing, controlling, and trying to make things come out our way. Instead, we can simply accept our present situation and honor it as perfect. This opens us and change happens naturally. We do not meditate to become serene, but only to be here now. Serenity and centeredness happen as we let go of everything that prevents us from being here now: thoughts, wishes, expectations, and attachments. Sitting meditation is usually done cross-legged or on a chair with back straight,
head erect, hands on thighs or knees, breathing naturally and evenly, with mouth closed and eyes open. Keeping your eyes open fosters being here now rather than shutting out present reality. Do not
stare at the floor; simply see it without concentrating on it. In fact, do not concentrate on anything; only maintain awareness of your breathing. Do not try to get rid of
thoughts or treat them as distractions. Let your thoughts pass through your mind without holding on to any one of them. Simply observe them without judgement or attachment, as if
they were part of a movie. This is actually a way of practicing for life; you do not have to be caught up in the drama in your head. You can be the watcher within who sees with full awareness but without anxiety or selfreproach. You can let what occurs inform you rather than overwhelm you. When you notice yourself drifting with your thoughts, label it “thinking” and return to awareness of your breathing. In this way you remind yourself that you can choose to leave your personal storyline and come back to the here and now. Meditation thus empowers you to acknowledge your present predicament as a light on the next step of your path and so to get on with your life. This is how the present is perfect.

Spring is on the way, and now is the time to prepare your boat for the coming season! Proper preparation for the season is essential. Beyond the obvious -- shrink wrap removal, engine prep, and cleaning -- there are some other important areas often overlooked. Many boaters are adding more electronics on their boat each year, and that takes power. It is important to check the condition of your batteries. Inspect the water level on “non-maintenance free” batteries, the state of charge, and perform a load test with a load tester. A marine electrician can perform these tests for you. Every boater knows the frustration of getting on the water and finding your battery is dead. A power pack, like the NOCO GB40, for example, is a good piece of equipment to carry. These compact versions of battery jumper packs are
lightweight and provide peace of mind. If you find your batteries are not holding up after a full day on the water, consider adding another battery or replacing existing batteries. Always use batteries that are identical in cold cranking or marine cranking amps. Use deep cycle batteries for electronics and starting batteries for motors. The next thing boaters should look at is the condition of wire terminals at fuse blocks, batteries, and electronics. DC electrical corrosion is very common in our area, due to the saltwater. The best cure is to remove each terminal, wire brush them clean, replace and then spray with a corrosion inhibitor or dielectric grease. Products like CRC corrosion inhibitor spray or Permatex dielectric grease are available at hardware or marine stores. AC wiring and connections are best left to the professionals, as a

wrong connection could lead to damaged equipment or personal injury. After storing your boat for the winter months, it’s likely that there are updates that you will need to run for your marine electronics. Check with your electronics manufacturer on the web for software updates that you can
download to an SD card and install on your chartplotter. Understanding that your zincs protect your boat’s electrical systems from electrical currents carried through the water, it’s absolutely vital that you replace your zincs, even if you think you can get another season out of them. Galvanic
corrosion can destroy metals such as hose barbs, props, or any underwater aluminum. Shore power cords and connections link all boats in the marina dock thru the green grounding lead. A galvanic isolator added to your AC electric system will help block the flow of destructive low voltage galvanic (DC) currents but still maintain the integrity of the safety grounding (green) circuit. As we get closer to those sunny warm days on the water, remember the adage, safety first. If you are concerned about any of your boat’s electrical systems, get in touch with a marine electrician certified by ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council). These technicians have highly-specialized training in the latest marine standards and will help to ensure you have a perfect day on the water. Happy boating!

How do you stop arguing with your child? The best and most effective way is to refuse to take part in an argument in one in the first place. When you engage in arguing with your children, they begin to look at you as one of their peers and feel they have the power to challenge you. The more powerful they think they are, and the more arguing gets them what they want, the more they will use arguing as a way to solve their problems with you and with others. You cannot win an argument by arguing back. You lose once you allow yourself to get dragged into the argument in the first place. So, there is a difference between a disagreement, a difference of opinion, and an argument. You want to be the role model and teach
your kids the life-long skill of acceptable communication at home and in public. You want your children to be able to express their side and their opinion on matters emotionally and effectively without raising their voices or bullying. Arguing just takes it to an unacceptable level and power struggle. Take it down a notch. It is best to talk when you are both calm. There should be no cursing. There should be no name calling. Each of you should listen to the other without interrupting. In the end, neither of you may have changed your minds but at least each side has spoken and been heard in a respectful manner. If you act the way you want your child to act, you will be setting the example for them. Children emulate their parents. They observe actions of the parents
