Romaine, who was in favor of putting the 75-25 cesspool/ sewer split on the ballot during his election for county executive, made getting a sewer deal done a major plank in his campaign platform.
By Robert Chartuk Not wasting any time in tackling the most pressing environmental issue faced by Suffolk, County Executive-Elect Edward Romaine has brokered a consensus between stakeholders to support the expansion of sewers and help homeowners convert to clean water septic systems. The agreement, made between environmental groups, building trades, and government officials, will put the question of raising the county’s sales tax an eighth of a cent before residents in a November referendum, a vote that was scuttled by the Suffolk Legislature this year due to objections over the funding formula. According to Romaine, the agreement splits funding evenly between sewer construction and private septic upgrades. It will create a countywide sewer district and apply the same funding split for sewer monies coming in through the existing quarter-percent sales tax dedicated to clean water. More than $2 billion is expected to be generated over the 35-year life of the funding mechanisms, Romaine noted. The county executive-elect, who will leave his current position as Brookhaven Town supervisor January 1, said he will work with the county legislature to create a Home Rule Message to send to Albany for state approval to hold the public vote. The previous measure, which dedicated only

25% of the environmental funds to new sewers, was passed as part of the state budget without being signed off on by Suffolk lawmakers. “We’re going to do it this time with a Home Rule Message supported by the county legislature,” Romaine stressed, adding that the stakeholders meeting was attended by state Assemblyman Fred Thiele and William Duffy, counsel to the legislature. Others attending the meeting where the sewer plan was worked out were representatives of the League of Conservation Voters, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Group for the East End, Nature Conservancy, Long Island Federation of Labor, and the Long Island Contractors’ Association. “Everyone agreed that we should get our environmental agenda moving forward by putting this issue before the voters,” Romaine said. Suffolk Legislator James Mazzarella expressed confidence that a package brokered by Romaine will garner the necessary support from county lawmakers. “By pursuing a Home Rule Message, the new county executive can win a consensus among the legislators and put us in a good position to take the bill to Albany,” Mazzarella said, adding that the legislature’s presiding officer, Kevin McCaffrey, played a key role in holding off on a public vote last November so that the allocations could be reworked. “The presiding officer deserves a lot of credit for getting us to this point
Outgoing executive Steve Bellone has initiated studies to bring sewers to various Suffolk communities and business districts, with officials hoping to have shovel-ready projects eligible for the $1 trillion federal infrastructure fund and the state’s $4.2 billion Clean Water Bond Act. In addition to extending the Forge River Watershed Sewer Project deeper into the Mastics and Shirley, particularly to serve the massive Beechwood redevelopment of Neighborhood Road, the county is looking to bring sewer service to
Centereach-Selden, Coram, Deer Park, Farmingville, Holbrook, Oakdale, Port Jefferson Station, Saint James, Smithtown, West Babylon, and Wyandanch, projects that will cost billions of dollars. “Keeping Long Island’s water clean is one of my top priorities,” Romaine said. “Suffolk voters have been supportive of raising funds for environmental purposes, and we are hopeful that they will approve these measures when they are asked to decide in the referendum.”
Santos Expulsion: NY Republicans Push Effort and Side with Democrats Again By Howard Roark On Friday, December 1, George Santos was voted out of the House of Representatives by a vote of 311114 (2 present). An overwhelming majority of Democrats voted in favor, while a substantial percentage of Republicans voted against. The move to oust Santos has been pursued and led by local Congressman Nick LaLota for several months now, and the Democrats finally delivered the outcome he desired. LaLota was quoted as saying “By expelling George Santos… my colleagues and I gave Queens and Nassau County voters a chance at fair and honest representation and set a new precedent. The House of Representatives will expel a member of Congress who lies about everything to trick donors and voters and, by doing so, give voters a real opportunity to participate in a non-fraudulent election.” This implication of this statement is that when a politician lies on the campaign trail the election is therefore “fraudulent”. Congressman LaLota is correct that such a statement does, in fact, set a new precedent. Aside from the obvious virtue signaling, the broader question
of this move is how it benefits, in any way, the constituents in either LaLota’s or Santos’ districts, which appears to be “not at all”. Santos appears to have lied. Santos has also been indicted on a number of charges relating to misallocation of campaign finances. The voters in NY-3 and NY-1 elected these individuals, however, to help manage the federal government, to promote conservative principals, and to help steer federal dollars back to our communities. The Santos seat will now be vacant for three months until a special election can be conducted, and the early indications are that former Rep. Tom Suozzi (Democrat) will easily win that election due to his name recognition and ability to mobilize a campaign so quickly. So the practical implication of Santos’ ouster is that the voters in NY-3 will have no representation at all for three months and then a likely Democrat rep in 2024, and the voters in NY-1 will see the already slim Republican majority cut by one seat with an additional Democrat vote added to the House early next year, making the advancement of conservative legislation all the more difficult to pass. Congressman LaLota does not appear persuaded by a
slimming Republican majority as he continues to vote along with Democrats to pass meaningful legislation through the house. His top priority for months has appeared to be the ouster of Santos, and he managed to get that passed with 206 Democrats supporting him but only 105 Republicans in favor. This comes on the heels of recent budget legislation in which a $2 trillion deficit was pushed through the House with 209 Democrats supporting it and only 127 Republicans in favor, including Congressman LaLota. Republicans in NY state and Suffolk County took great pride in 2022 in helping to deliver a Republican-led House, due in large part to the outpouring of support for Lee Zeldin for Governor. These new NY members are now voting reliably with Democrats on key legislation and have now led the effort to remove a Republican Congressman from NY which will almost certainly lead to a Democrat taking his place. Santos may have been a liar and may soon be convicted in a court of law, but one wonders whether his actions were better or worse for NY Republicans than the actions of LaLota and the other NY members who continue to side with Democrats.

Tree Lighting Illuminates Mastic Beach for the Holidays
By Robert Chartuk The sky was lit with the colors of the holidays, and Santa made an appearance Saturday at the Greater Mastic Beach Chamber of Commerce’s annual tree lighting hosted by Ultimate Mower on Commack Road. There were giveaways for the kids, and cheery music rang through the community courtesy of Party 105.3 and Big Hits 98.1, which gave out prizes for holiday music trivia. “It was wonderful to see a huge turnout from the community and all of the participants who brought such holiday spirit to the season,” said Matt Towle, chamber vice president. “It is events like these that create lasting holiday memories.” According to Chamber President Ava Torres, the organization holds the event every year, and each time, more and more people attend. “We are delighted to keep the tree lighting tradition going,” Torres said. “Everyone comes out and celebrates the holidays. It’s such a great way to bring our
community together.” Torres thanked Shirley Feed, LJ’s What’s Hot, and Fred Towle from the South Shore Press for their sponsorship of the event and recognized the Mastic Beach Fire Department and Brookhaven Town Public Safety for their help. The grand plan to open his 16-acre facility to the masses received a tragic setback last week from a fire that damaged

The Serbian engineer, who died at age 86, had made a vast fortune and invested it all in pursuing new ideas such as wireless electric power distribution, intercontinental communication, and x-ray devices. He famously beat out Thomas Edison, a previous employer, with his AC system when the Wizard of Menlo Park was advocating a direct current approach. COVID Water Assistance Extended
By Robert Chartuk Residents who have trouble paying their water bill can get help through the Low Income Household Water Assistance Program. The benefit, through the state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, will provide an additional $415 directly to the water provider of anyone who qualified for the program since it was enacted in 2020, according to Assemblyman Joseph DeStefano. The Suffolk County Water Authority says it has already collected more than $1 million on behalf of its customers and will apply a credit directly to their accounts. SCWA Chairman Charlie Lefkowitz praised the program, saying, “LIHWAP has been a major benefit to our customers who were struggling following the COVID pandemic. Many found themselves falling
behind on their water bill, and this program helped them to catch up. Thanks to LIHWAP, SCWA has collected millions to cover unpaid bills and this additional payment will help us even further in getting
these balances resolved.” LIHWAP was created by Congress during the COVID pandemic to help those who were struggling to pay for drinking water services, DeStefano noted. The
program paid up to $2,500 to qualifying applicants to pay for past-due water bills. SCWA says that in total, it collected more than $3.2 million across approximately 4,800 accounts that were approved for LIHWAP before this supplemental was announced. SCWA saw a substantial increase in the amount of debt held by customers in recent years; however, that amount has fallen significantly due in part to LIHWAP. The additional benefit announced by OTDA will be applied directly to accounts, with no additional action needed to be taken by customers, DeStefano explained. “Those who received LIHWAP assistance will have their remaining debt reduced by the supplemental payment. Those who have fully paid their arrears or owe less than $415 will have a credit applied to their account against future bills,” he said.

Rental Housing Forum, an event highlighting its efforts to address the current affordable housing crisis. Deputy Commissioner of Housing and Community Development Marie M. Michel, alongside Diane Castro, Rental Subsidy Program Coordinator, spearheaded the forum to discuss key housing initiatives and programs. This gathering was particularly significant in highlighting the various housing assistance programs and their accessibility to residents of Brookhaven. The forum concentrated on the critical issue of income qualifications for various rental subsidy programs. These programs are designed to cater to different community segments, ranging from low, very low, to extremely low-income groups. Deputy Commissioner Michel and Diane Castro provided comprehensive details on these classifications, underscoring the town's commitment to equitable access to housing assistance. The criteria established are essential to ensure that the support reaches those most in need, aligning with Brookhaven's efforts to provide equitable housing solutions. An essential aspect of the event was providing landlords with thorough guidelines on
participating in the subsidy programs. The criteria, including maintaining HUDstandard housing, fair rent pricing, and the absence of tax liens on properties, are critical in maintaining high standards in the rental market. Furthermore, landlords must not have familial relationships with renters to foster impartiality in housing. These requirements testify to the town's dedication to upholding quality and fairness in the rental housing sector. A significant portion of the forum was dedicated to discussing the Town of Brookhaven's Plus One Accessory Apartment/Dwelling Unit (A.D.U.) Program. This innovative program, supported by $2 million in grants from the
New York State Housing Trust Fund Corporation, aims to assist homeowners in constructing or renovating A.D.U.s. The program provides up to $125,000 per eligible household, marking a considerable step towards expanding housing options in the community— the eligibility criteria for the A.D.U. Program, including homeownership requirements, principal residence status, and adherence to income limits, were meticulously outlined, providing clear guidance to potential applicants. The forum was an educational platform for fostering communication between residents and local housing authorities. This engagement makes housing assistance
programs more approachable and less daunting for the community. Christmas Parade Canceled Due to Weather, No Rain Date, Community Disappointed
By Robert Chartuk Mother Nature did a Bah Humbug on the annual holiday parade sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of the Mastics & Shirley for Sunday, leaving residents disappointed and flustered over the popular event having no rain date. A dazzling lineup of bands, floats, and other attractions was scheduled to march down Montauk Highway, but it was not to be, as the winter season brought a dreary rain. The show will go on next year, according to Chamber President Frank Montanez, with the same features and sponsors. "We have not scheduled rain dates for the last few years because we very rarely ever had to use a rain date," Montanez said. "What happens is when you have the rain date, you lose anywhere from 20 to 25% of your participants. Automatically, you're losing people in the parade, and then you lose a good portion of your onlookers. So, we thought about it very carefully, and we also had some input from the police department and from Brookhaven Town; there was a lot that went into deciding not to have a rain date," Montanez explained. "People think that we just nonchalantly say no parade; that's far from the truth," the chamber president continued. "We take this parade very seriously to make sure we have the best event

possible. There's a lot that goes into planning and staffing an event on this scale, and it would not have been as good if we lost those participants who could not make it on the rain date." "Ridiculous there is no rain date. Our kids look forward to this every year, whether they march or just go and watch it. Very disappointing," said Deanna Papaccio on Facebook. Stac Ciee posted: "With all the planning and effort put in for so many people, not having a rain date is very disappointing!" Added Sean Lewis: "When people wonder why traditional things go away, they can use this as an example. Parade business 101, have a rain date." Some backed the no-rain date decision. "No rain date because to coordinate staffing and emergency personnel availability is not only financially restrictive, it is pragmatically and logistically
impractical, especially on a weekend in December," wrote Joseph H. Johnson. "Considering that the majority of all who organize are volunteers who
are orchestrating and managing several groups along with governmental agencies, there is a reason parades generally do not have rain dates." Montenez said the parade's Grand Marshals, Keith and Cassie Caputo, will be invited back, as well as all of the participants and sponsors. "Any money that gets taken in will get used for the parade, and anything that's left over gets used for the following year," he added. "I'm one of the most passionate people regarding the parade and Christmas," Montanez stressed. "There is definitely a lot of disappointment. I know there's a community disappointed, but also, so are
we, extremely so." Montanez said the chamber conducts many activities throughout the year and is hopeful that residents don't look upon the organization unfavorably over this year's rainout. "There are many excellent events that many civic groups and organizations put on throughout the year, and while we could not have the parade today, we look forward to future events and, of course, a triumphant return next year of our Christmas Parade. Until then, we apologize for the disappointment and inconvenience and hope that everyone gets a chance to enjoy the holiday season," the chamber posted.

"The anticipation and excitement of a multi-milliondollar winner at Jake's 58 had been building since the Wheel of Fortune reached the $2 million mark earlier this year," said Phil Boyle, President and CEO of Suffolk Off Track Betting Corp, which operates Jake's. "It was just
a matter of timing and good luck, and we could not be happier for our player."

The casino's 3,000-5,000 daily guests will have expanded accommodations as the OTB is planning a $200 million expansion that will double the amount of video lottery terminals and electronic table games to 2,000. The casino, formerly the Marriott Hotel, will revamp the 40-yearold facility's 210 rooms, expand conference space, and add a threestory parking garage.

Incoming County Legislator Arrested By Robert Chartuk Suffolk Legislator-Elect Catherine Stark was arrested over the weekend by Riverhead Town Police on charges of operating a vehicle while impaired. Set to take over the office held by Legislator Albert Krupski, where she served as chief of staff, Stark revealed she is battling cancer, and had taken prescribed medication in the hours preceding the arrest. “There was no alcohol or illegal substances involved, and a test volunteered to by Ms. Stark showed this,” her attorney, Steven Losquadro, said in a statement. “A blood test, also voluntarily given, will conclusively prove this. An investigation was conducted and the operator of the vehicle, who was identified as Catherine Stark, age 60, of Riverhead, was placed under arrest for violation of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law 1192.4 driving while ability impaired by drugs. Stark was transported to Police Headquarters and held overnight for arraignment. Appearing before Judge Lori Hulse in Riverhead Town Justice Court Monday morning, Stark pleaded not guilty and was released. According to the complaint, the officer reported that she showed signs of "being disoriented, droopy eyelids, drowsiness, drunk-like behavior, slurred speech, extreme dry mouth, slow internal clock and

Behind the picturesque landscapes and cozy neighborhoods, more than 200,000 Long Islanders, including nearly 70,000 children, wrestle with food insecurity. The struggle to put food on the table is a stark reality for many, but during these challenging times, the unsung heroes of local food pantries step up. The all-items Consumer Price Index (CPI) tells a concerning story in a world where inflation continues to rise. It remained unchanged from September 2023 to October 2023 but showed a significant 3.2 percent increase from October 2022. Food prices are an even more pressing concern, “rising by 0.3 percent in the same period and reaching a worrying 3.3 percent higher than the previous year," according to the USDA. Amidst these trying circumstances, a beacon of hope shines brightly in Patchogue through Light House Mission Patchogue and in MasticShirley through the Mastic and Shirley Community Emergency Food Center. These local food pantries, among many others on Long Island, play a crucial role in alleviating hunger and ensuring that no one in the community goes to bed hungry.
Paster Howie Mann of Light House Mission Patchogue explains, "We are totally independent and depend on private donations. In the past month, we served an astonishing 11,000 individuals. We help those who lack the means to cook and those living outdoors. We are the largest mobile food pantry in the region." The president of the Mastic and Shirley Community Emergency Food Center, Richie Geraci, reveals, "We serve between 1,000 and 1,200 individuals. People rely on us
now more than ever with the lowering of SNAP benefits. We give away canned foods, poultry, beef, snacks, and more to provide a lifeline to those in need." However, the impact of these food pantries goes beyond just providing sustenance. Light House Mission Patchogue, in particular, has brought food, clothing, and the hope of Jesus to struggling Long Island families since 1992. Their journey from serving ten sandwiches to over 2,000 people a week is a testament to the lasting impact of their work.
During this holiday season, one thing is clear: people in need require specific items to make ends meet. By late Tuesday morning, the service was back online, a relief to the county's residents and officials, including County Executive Steve Bellone.

Who Was Walter T. Shirley?
By Robert Chartuk While many are familiar with the South Shore community known as Shirley, not everyone knows it was named for the developer who put the area on the map– Walter T. Shirley. Shirley catered to the middle-class customer, building close to 4,000 homes in an area previously called Mastic Acres. So many people took him up on his offer of affordable homes that the postal service created a new office on land he donated. Both the post office and the community were named in his honor. Shirley started out as a song promoter but ended up as a successful real estate developer with the foresight to crisscross the vacant land with new roads. He had a large group of friends, including actors, sports figures, and politicians, and enlisted them to promote his homes. After he bought the Tolfree Estate on Manor Drive and found plans for the Hamlet of Tangiers drawn
up by the previous owner, Fred Quimby, Shirley was determined to make his dream of creating a new community come true. In the 1960s you could buy a Chalet Ranch House for $4,785, a Rambling New England Cape Cod Country Home for $7,895, or go upscale with the $10,990 Westminster, all approved for funding through the Federal Housing Administration. The growing community was kept informed by the developer's Shirley News, which featured the activities of the Shirley Taxpayers Association, the dance committee, and local political clubs. Shirley was a generous donor to local causes, including the Shirley Library and the local baseball team, which posed with him in front of his Ocean Gateway Property Office for a photo that appeared in the paper. He's also featured in an article about his donation of $11,800 to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Outside of building
homes, Shirley served as New York City's Commerce Commissioner in the early 1950s under Mayor Vincent R. Impellitter and maintained an office at 500 5th Avenue in Manhattan. The New York Digital Photo Collection has many pictures of him with celebrities such as singer Tony Bennett and Norwegian figure skater and film star Sonja Henie, as well as images of the Shirley News, which makes for fascinating reading about the community's early history. Mayor Adams has experienced a steep decline in approval, now at 37 percent, a drastic drop from the 61 percent favorability in a March 2022 Marist survey. This plummet is attributed to several factors, including his handling of the migrant crisis, where Adams notably stated, "This migrant crisis will destroy New York." Additionally, his involvement in a federal investigation has further impacted his standing. The FBI is investigating Adams' interactions with Turkey during his 2021 campaign, probing whether any collusion with foreign interests may have influenced campaign activities or decisions. Chancellor Blasted Over School Violence By Robert Chartuk Following incidents of violence and antisemitism at Hillcrest High School in Queens, members of the state Assembly's Education Committee demanded "immediate and steadfast attention" to the issue from the city's school chancellor. "The tepid public statements from Chancellor David Banks are simply not enough. New Yorkers deserve swift, significant action to remedy this situation to ensure these reprehensible acts are never repeated," the nine Republicans on the committee wrote in a public statement. Students at the Jamaica Hills school threatened a teacher after they learned she had posted a proIsrael picture on social media as the controversy heated up over the Hamas terrorist attack in October and Israel's subsequent invasion of the Gaza Strip. A school safety officer was attacked as up to 400 rioters roamed the school's halls. "There is no place for hatred or division in our public schools, yet we have seen rallies supporting terrorism, arrests of publicityseeking lawmakers, professors praising violence, and threats against Jewish teachers and students, signaling the infection of radical beliefs that must be

"As leaders and role models, all officials have a duty to instill higher values in students and safeguard communities– especially in times of crisis." The vote, manifesting deep divisions within the GOP, saw 311 members, including 105 Republicans, in favor and 114, with 112 Republicans, opposed. Prominent GOP figures such as House Speaker Mike Johnson, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, and House GOP Whip Tom Emmer voted against Santos' expulsion. Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) expressed disapproval leading up to this decisive action, mainly targeting the New York delegation's strategy. Israel Resumes Strategic Strikes in Gaza Post Truce Failure saying, "While we support Israel's legitimate military objectives in Gaza, the civilian suffering has been too high."
By Raheem Soto Israel's military operations in Gaza have intensified following the collapse of a recent truce, with the Israeli military targeting critical Hamas facilities. This escalation has reignited the complex and longstanding conflict in the region.
The IDF reported striking over 400 targets in Gaza in the first 24 hours post-truce collapse. Dr. Ashraf Al-Qudra, a spokesperson for the Hamas-controlled health ministry in Gaza, provided a grim update: "At least 15,207 people have been killed, and 40,652 injured in recent strikes, with 70% being women and children."
In a statement on Saturday, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris voiced concerns about the humanitarian impact of the conflict. "Too many innocent Palestinians have been killed," Harris said, urging Israel to prioritize civilian safety.
Israel's blockade on Gaza has led to critical shortages, impacting 2.2 million residents. The UNRWA estimates that approximately 1.8 million people have been displaced in Gaza since early October.

Gay Sports Group Criticizes Football Players Over Beliefs no place in today's society. It is not very forward thinking to say that someone’s race makes the situation worse since they don’t think your belief is right. The second player that Outsports attacked on their NFL witch-hunt this past week was Minnesota Vikings Quarterback and four time Pro-Bowler Kirk Cousins. Cousins, 35, has not been active in weeks as he suffered a torn achilles on October 29th against the Green Bay Packers, but that clearly didn’t stop the gay sports group from attacking the quarterback’s beliefs.

By Nick Cipolla During the previous week, the National Football League allowed players to wear custom cleats that promote awareness to a certain topic or promote a charitable organization that is doing positive things off the field. The event has become referred to as “My Cleats, My Cause”, yet despite the positive contributions it may bring these charities or organizations, the event has become overshadowed by recent comments made by Gay Sports Media Group Outsports as they attacked two players' beliefs in an attempt to cancel them. The first player that was attacked by the “peaceful” group that promotes LGBTQIA+ propaganda in sports this week was Veteran Cornerback Kendall Fuller of the Washington Commanders. Fuller, 28, was put on blast by the group for electing to share that his customized cleats were promoting awareness for The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which is an international non-profit Christian sports ministry founded in 1954 and based in Kansas City, Missouri. “The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful platform of sport to reach every coach and every athlete with the transforming power of Jesus Christ,” stated the mission statement on the group’s website. “The FCA focuses on serving local communities around the globe by engaging, equipping and empowering coaches and athletes to unite, inspire and change the world through the gospel.” Despite their message and hopes to spread Christianity across the sports world, Outsports attacked the group and Fuller for promoting what they call “an anti-LGBTQ group”. “(Kendall) Fuller, a cornerback with the Washington Commanders and captain of the team, seems to
be the only current NFL player to publicly support a clearly antiLGBTQ organization — Fellowship of Christian Athletes — with his My Cause My Cleats in 2024,” read the statement on Outsports.com. “Zero NFL players are supporting organizations that specifically support LGBTQ charities, a lengthy Outsports review of this year’s program has found. It’s only the second year since 2019 that is the case.” It is pretty clear that Outsports is upset about no players electing to go woke and support the LQBTQIA+ this year and with the Washington Commanders – an organization with more negative PR than Bud Light – hosting the NFL’s First “Pride Weekend” this past Sunday as a way to cover up all the bad press they have gotten in recent years, the media group felt it was necessary to take shots at a man who clearly is sharing his religious beliefs and is trying to promote a non-profit that helps out many people across the world. “As previously reported by Outsports, Fellowship of Christian Athletes bars LGBTQ people — or anyone supporting same-sex marriage or other LGBTQ rights — from holding leadership roles within the organization,” read the statement on the Outsports website. “It’s impossible to believe that Fuller — a Black man — would support any organization that bars Black people from leadership roles, as so many churches did for so many years, no matter how “Christian” he, or the organization, is.” What makes this statement tone deaf by a group of people who wants the majority of the world to pander to their needs and beliefs is that they pull out the race card and try to degrade and tear down Fuller by not just his religious beliefs – which violates his rights as a human being – but by the color of his skin. For a group of people who want everyone to be tolerant and nice, they seem to be the ones who are trying to degrade someone by the color of their skin and their religious beliefs, both of which should have

According to the group's official website, their values are “To be led by the Holy Spirit in sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible by nurturing and affirming the Godordained institution of the family and proclaiming biblical truths worldwide.” Despite their efforts to spread the word of the Lord, Outsports called them a hate group on their website last week and continuously condemned Kirk Cousins for his support of the group while posting “hateful comments” that they received or have seen about their

group that apparently came from the Evangelical Christian group. Although some of these people may have said some disgusting things to or about Outsports, they themselves should understand the phrase “If you can’t take it, don’t dish it out,” as their website has been the ones who have posted tons of antiChristian propaganda on their website and criticized athletes for believing in the religion. Cousins is considered one of the nicest and upstanding characters in the NFL, often referred to as a “good guy.” But Outsports still finds a reason to try and drag him through the dirt. “A couple people in and around the NFL have told me he’s considered a ‘good guy,’” said Cyd Ziegler, self-proclaimed “Journalist” of Outsports who wrote the articles about both Kendall Fuller and
Cousins. “Still, he’s a good guy who appeared publicly in support of a rabidly anti-LGBTQ organization.” In the world we live in today, we should learn to keep stuff like Outsports and their efforts to make sports pander to the beliefs of the 1% of fans out of the spotlight as all it does is bring negative attention to the sport while also ruining something great, like NFL Stars donating to charitable organizations while trying to get them publicity that may lead to even more donations that could help out people who need the support more than anyone. Until they cease their witch hunt to try and cancel people who are believers in Christianity, Outsports can’t be taken seriously by anyone and they should be considered a “Hate Group” that they so desperately try to paint every group that supports Christianity.

Kate Sweet was the leading scorer for the Hurricanes as she scored 21 points and had six steals. Sandra Clarke chipped in with a 16 point, 7 assist game and Chloe Blowes made an impact as she grabbed 15 rebounds. Despite a heartbreaking loss, Giselle Harris had a remarkable performance in the season opener as she scored 17 points for Longwood.

Winter Track is Back
By Nick Cipolla Despite a handful of Suffolk County athletes venturing out west to compete in Cross Country Nationals, some of Section XI’s best track athletes began the indoor season at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood Campus or
ventured into New York City to race at the prestigious Armory Indoor Track in Washington Heights, throughout different time frames during the week, just about every team in the county competed. Mount Sinai’s Star Senior Distance Runner Jess Joe Augustine got off to a fast start to his indoor campaign as he won his 1600 meter race in a blazing fast 4:36 just weeks after wrapping up his cross country season. Smithtown East saw high jumper and first year athlete Braden McCormick have an impressive start to his career as he cleared the 6 foot mark, placing second in the event. McCormick would also place fifth in the long jump as his furthest jump was 18 feet 5.5 inches from the board.

decided to spend this past weekend back on the track instead of taking a week or two off as she came home with the victory over the rest of the field full of high schoolers in the girls 3000 meter race as she ran to a time of 10:43 over the near 2 mile distance. Gabrielson’s teammate, Paige Schieffele, also claimed a victory over the weekend as she ran away with the 1000 meter crown with a new personal record time of 3:09. It wouldn’t be a track article if Zariel Macchia didn’t make an appearance as the superstar distance runner from William Floyd High School took to the track this past weekend as she used her 1500 meter race as a tune up for her upcoming race at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in San Diego this upcoming week. Macchia would clock in with the fastest time of the meet as she ran a blistering 4:52 en route to victory. She will put her track season back on hold for just one more week as she has collected the state standard for the 1500 (time fast enough to qualify her for the state championship) and put her focus into winning a

By Nick Cipolla One of Long Island’s most prolific passers over the last few seasons has finally announced where he will be playing college football next fall as Smithtown West’s Brayden Stahl has decided to further his playing career and education at Lock Haven University. “Proud to announce my commitment to play Division II football at Lock Haven University!” wrote Stahl on his Instagram account late Sunday night. “Thank you to all my coaches and teammates who have helped me along the way!” After receiving some interest from programs across all of the major levels of college football, Stahl ultimately chose to take his talents to the Division II level and head out to the State of Pennsylvania where he will call Lock Haven his home for the next four years. The 6’1” senior quarterback is coming off of yet another All-
County season for the Smithtown West Bulls as he finished the past season with a 63 percent completion rate, 2,559 passing yards, and 34 passing touchdowns. All of these numbers add up to be inside the top five out of everyone on the island. Stahl capped his career off by playing in one of the highest scoring games in the county’s history as he tossed 7 touchdown passes in a losing effort to Half Hollow Hills in the first round of the playoffs this fall. He was also a participant at the Suffolk County PAL All-Star game last month and he was invited to play in the Rising Stars Bowl on May 18th where the best of Long Island will take on the best of New York City in a football game. Off the field, the soon-to-be Smithtown West Alumni has performed well in the classroom. Stahl has scored a 1400 out of 1600 on his SAT while maintaining a 4.11 GPA in the classroom on a 4.40 scale.

This Sunday afternoon changed the course of College Football forever, and the dominos continue to fall. Not only will this be the last time we ever have a four team college football playoff, but it is also the last time we will see many teams in their respective conferences. Beginning in 2024 there will be an expanded playoff format, as well as key teams moving to new conferences, and by all accounts the end of the Pac 12 as well. All of this should have been enough to make us say that nothing will be the same for college football fans, but this selection committee also gave us a game changing decision. The committee left Florida State out of the playoff format this year and instead decided to take Texas and Alabama. This is the first time that an unbeaten conference champion from a power five conference didn't make the playoff and it

set off a string of negativity and consequences that will echo for years to come. Florida State not only went undefeated but they also had an impressive schedule, where they beat two SEC teams along the way, neither game was in Tallahassee. The committee allowed Alabama and Texas to leapfrog the Noles, despite last week FSU being ranked #4, while the Longhorns and Tide were ranked 7 & 8. The playoff committee has now been under fire, even under legal fire since the decision, because of the precedents they have set forward. The four teams that now will play in this year's playoff, which is now being referred to as an invitational, all will reside in two conferences come 2024. So, what are the fans, media, and athletes to think from conferences that don't bear the title of Big 10 or SEC? There was already a divide among college football fans and brass

about what damage having these mega conferences would bring, and now with this slap in the face, how can anyone trust the NCAA?

As we (probably) all make New Year’s resolutions to go on a diet, we keep getting reminded that we are getting heavier as we get older. No matter where we turn, someone is telling us that we are getting fat and need to be thinner! Guess what? So are our boats! Yes, as boats get older, they get heavier and that has a lot to do with being less “sea-kindly” and more “tender” as they get older (and our reflexes get slower – not a particularly good combination.) And I recently thought that I’d test my theory on myself – as per the annual exercise, I emptied the patrol boat for deep cleaning and, rather than just blindly putting everything back, I reviewed the need for each item as it went back in. I threw out 60 lbs of material that was otherwise ballast! With fuel always subject to geopolitical roiling, here are some examples of how the boat is getting heavier – and more expensive to drive.
New Stuff
We add things to our boat that weren’t there when we bought it. An ice chest may be added so we
don’t have to lug one from the car. We add an additional ice chest so we can bring more ice so we can stay out longer and catch more fish (hopefully!) We pile up the cuddy cabin, a.k.a., the boat’s attic, with safety and fishing equipment so we don’t have to lug them from the car either. And don’t forget that new 4-stroke engine you added – so much quieter, so much more fuel efficient and so much heavier per “horse of power” – at least 20% heavier would be my guesstimate, which makes a 400lb 200hp 2-stroke weigh in at nearly 500lbs as a 4-stroke state-of-the-art power plant, and the same hull sits in front of it.
Boats Get “Wrinkles” too
More insidiously, through tiny cracks in the gel coat, water seeps inside the hull and the boat gets eight lbs heavier per gallon – and it seeps, generally, aft where the boat is naturally heavier per square foot of hull due to the engine. This makes it harder to see over the bow when you gun the engine and start to “dig the hole” that getting up on plane gets you out of – and it is now harder to get on plane, i.e., you have to go faster, to get up on plane since the boat is heavier in the stern than when it was manufactured. An

Remedies
As we’re laying up the boats for the winter, now’s a good time to take stock and throw out the unnecessary. Such as? There are only two or three things that you can do. First, get rid of anything that isn’t essential – see above! There are 10 weekends in a summer. You aren’t going to boat on every one of those 20 days – unless you are between spouses and looking for one that wants to live on the boat with you! How much of a big deal is it to cart just the things you need – not everything you own all the time - from the car or the dock locker that you installed at the foot of your slip? Second, you may want to look into trim tabs – small “flaps” that are installed under your transom that will help you get up onto plane faster. What they save in fuel when “digging out of the hole” will quickly cover their costs. And don’t underestimate the safety factor that you’ll be able to see over the bow sooner. Third, you may need to change your prop! The engine may be plenty powerful enough to move your mini-warehouse but it can’t turn the propeller any faster due to its pitch (angle that it cuts through the water.) Counter-
intuitively, the lower the prop pitch, the better your shot out of the hole. However, this comes at a price: top speed. The lower pitch makes the engine reach maximum rpm at slower speeds. Conversely, a higher pitch will deliver greater top speeds, but slower acceleration. I recently went from a 3-blade prop to a 4-blade prop – same trade-off, up on plane sooner and more easily but lost about 10% of the wideopen-throttle (WOT) speed. For me, it was well worth it as I need to get out of the hole 100% of the time that I apply thrust but rarely need to operate at WOT. Talk to your dock master about who he or she uses when they re-
engineer props for customers. Go see them and talk about your options. This is some art, some science and some superstition. Talk it through with people who make a living engineering propellers. It will make a difference. Irrevocable Trusts and the Grantor Trust Rules

Q: A:
My friend has an irrevocable trust to protect assets in case she needs Medicaid to pay for her long-term care. What are the tax ramifications of this kind of trust?
For many clients the idea of creating and funding an Irrevocable Trust with an end goal of protecting assets should the need for long term care arise raises questions and concerns about the potential tax implications. Specifically, questions surrounding taxation of the assets that are transferred to the trust and concerns about losing property tax exemptions such as STAR and Enhanced STAR are common in our practice.
at the (presumably) lower rate of the grantor and all tax abatements can be retained as the Grantor will typically retain beneficial ownership of the property. Although Grantor trusts are subject to the same general rule for tax reporting as other trusts, specifically trusts with gross income that exceeds $600.00 are required to report, the method of reporting is far less complicated than you may expect. The trust may file a form 1041, U.S. Income Tax for Estates and Trusts form. In this case we refer to the 1041 as an “information only” return, listing the name of the trust, the tax identification number and the address used for notices on the trust. By doing this the IRS is placed on notice that the trust exists, and that all income and any other relevant information will be reported on the Grantor’s personal return. This provides that the Grantor will be treated as the owner of the assets held in the trust and accordingly, all income earned from the trust is reportable on
Although there is some truth to the idea that there could be negative higher taxation when income is earned on assets held in a trust, the Grantor Trust Rules of the Internal Revenue Code provide that where a trust is created as a Grantor Trust, following the rules set forth under the IRC Sections 671 through 678, the income earned and assets held within will be treated for tax purposes as if they are still owned by the Grantor, as a result, any income earned by the trust will be taxed

Finally, because the assets are still considered part of the Grantor’s estate for tax purposes, upon the death of the grantor, the beneficiaries will benefit from a full step up in basis on the value of the home or any other appreciated asset, eliminating any concerns about capital gains implications. By creating and funding an Irrevocable Grantor trust, the Grantor is able to protect assets if the need for long term care arises while preserving grantor tax status and tax advantages and exemptions. the Grantor’s personal tax return. By Robert Chartuk Wayne R. Sill of Shoreham, a former Brookhaven Town GOP Zone Leader and Committeeman, passed away at age 79. The U.S. Marine and Veterans Advocate had his own business, Sill's Oil Service, and worked in the Brookhaven Parks Department. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Services will be at the O.B. Davis Funeral Home
in Miller Place on Friday, December 8. Sill leaves behind his beautiful family: beloved wife Linda of 52 years; his loving daughters Amy and Karyn; son-in-law David; grandchildren Isabel Tobey, William Tobey, Ethan Francois, and Aiden Francois; and Sam and Libby, his fur-children that will miss belly rubs from him. He was predeceased by his siblings, Thomas and Leslie. Sill was a proud Marine
Corps veteran who served during the Vietnam War. He was committed to veterans returning from the military, advocating for service members through the Marine Corps League. He was dedicated to preserving the history of his family and his town. Wayne was dedicated to making his community a better place to live in by being affiliated with many organizations, such as the Farmingville Reunion, Earth Day, and the Port Jefferson Station Chamber of Commerce. He also served with the town Parks and Recreation Department as the Secretary to Commissioner Robert Chartuk. Sill enjoyed researching American history by visiting historical sites and learning new information. Besides being a history connoisseur, he enjoyed antiquing, canoeing, and camping.
