On Wednesday, January 6th, Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine (right) and Councilman Dan Panico (second from right) congratulated William Floyd School District physical education teacher Ed Noll (third from right) for being named as 2020 Elementary Physical Educator of the Year for Suffolk County by
the New York State Association for Health, Physical, Recreation, and Dance. Mr. Noll is a physical education teacher at Moriches Elementary School, where he has taught for the last 12 years. In addition to teaching, Mr. Noll also serves as the head coach for the boys’ varsity cross country, winter track and spring track programs.

Marbleized Mask Art for a Cause
A Bellport High School Art Club student dipped a white face mask into a marbleized paint pattern for a fashionable accessory statement.
Masks have become the ultimate fashion statement during the Covid-19 pandemic. Bellport High School Art Club members, under the direction of adviser Lisa Conk, decided to make the latest fashion accessory in order to benefit the community. Prior to the start of the holiday season, the students utilized the painting technique of marbling to create distinctive face masks. In aluminum trays, the studentartists chose distinctive paint colors to create aqueous surface designs and to produce patterns Bellport High School Art Club members created marble designs in aluminum trays prior to dipping white face mask in the paint.

Bonner Presents Compost Tumbler to “Arbor Day” Contest Winner from Council District 2
On January 5, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (left) presented a compost tumbler to Christopher Callahan (center) from Sound Beach, the winner of the Town of Brookhaven’s “Arbor Day Compost Tumbler Giveaway” in Council District 2. The contest was held in December on the Town’s Facebook page with a winner selected from each Town Council District. Mr. Callahan stated that he “was excited to start using the compost tumbler to enhance the garden that he grows with his wife.” Also pictured is Nicole Pocchiare (right), the Town’s

We Are All Americans First Dear Editor, Every week that Congress is in session, I travel to Washington for votes and then come back home to my district, constituents and family. Over the last 6 years that I’ve had the privilege of representing New York’s First Congressional District in Congress, this has become my routine, but returning home last week was anything but normal. Last week, on January 6th, I was in the House chamber, where I witnessed the best of America collide with the worst of it in a moment that I will never forget. What we all witnessed on that day, should never be a scene at the U.S. Capitol. This is not the America we all love. In this country, we can debate and we can disagree. We can all passionately love our great nation, but in our republic we elect people to represent us and voice our concerns in the House and Senate, and we sure have many diverse concerns. There must be zero tolerance for violence in any form, and I totally condemn in the strongest possible terms the destruction, vandalism and loss of life that occurred inside of our glorious, historic Capitol. We live in the greatest nation in the history of the world, and we have big challenges at the moment, real disagreement over important issues, and a precarious future as a republic. Moving forward, there will be continued debate and there will be disagreement, but out of that must be a healthy, guarded and thriving democracy. Right now, we must recommit to working towards a vigorous defense of lady liberty at all costs, and the pursuit of unity whenever possible.

Biden, Jr. of Delaware, will be sworn in as the next President of the United States, and Kamala D. Harris of California, will be sworn in as the next Vice President of the United States. We all love our country, and want to see our nation stronger, safer, freer, and more prosperous than ever before. Of course, there will be disagreement about the best ways to do this, but in this midst of these passionate discussions, must be a commitment to pursue common ground however possible. As we look to the future with the resolve to create an ever more prosperous nation, let us take this moment to renew our spirit for whatever lies ahead, and remember that we are all Americans first. Sin Taxes Won’t Save NY Dear Editor, Regardless of where you stand on the issues of the legalization of marijuana and gambling, the Governor is coming forward with these proposals because New York State is broke. While NYS may see a bailout from our federal government, much like the MTA, they will both be broke again in short order because neither willingly addresses the root of the problem. Sin taxes are taxes on things generally acknowledged as having negative repercussions on society. Supporters of these taxes will lean on the argument that they are a deterrent to safeguard public health. However, in reality they are regressive and have little to no deterring effect. Your local liquor store owner can tell you the same. The annual revenue will become diluted over time as other states allow the same. Thus the effect will be to constantly increase the sin tax rates to keep up with the expected revenue. The touted public policy statement of our Governor was, “This program will generate much-needed revenue, while allowing us to support those that have been most harmed by decades of failed cannabis prohibition.” Sounds reasonable; right? But the notion of doing more when our government cannot meet its current responsibilities or budget is illusory at best. If bailouts, sin taxes and this nation’s highest taxes aren’t doing it, we have a major problem. NYS was over 6.5 billion dollars in the red, prior to COVID, during the largest economic expansion in United State’s history. Make no mistake about it, COVID has taken the State, and County, budgets from terrible to abysmal. But COVID as an economic scapegoat only works on those who don’t know the whole story - pay no mind to the man behind the
curtain, they say. Our Governor must look for bold solutions to these problems with the recognition that government cannot be everything to everyone because it runs on tax dollars for fuel. Moreover, as technology has changed the world so must government evolve to be more efficient. The Governor was on the right course earlier in his term when he emphasized consolidation. We rely on him to chart the course for the entire State, as the Legislature is heavily tilted toward NYC. The exodus out of New York is real. We are poised to lose a couple of Congressional seats because of it, and the clout that comes with them. Tom Golisano warned us and left a decade ago, Bob Matheson warned people to “get out of New York” a decade before him. It’s not too late, but we need real leadership in this State. Suffolk County Legislator Rudy Sunderman recently joined Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Dan Panico, and members of the Mastic Peninsula Historical Society to announce the acquisition and preservation of the Historic Captain Hawkins House located at 1431 Montauk Highway in Moriches. The Captain Hawkins House sits on 4.71 acres of property located in the Moriches Historic District, with part of the property being designated environmentally sensitive wetlands. The historic house on the property can be traced back as far as the 1830s, though researchers believe they may be able to trace it back even further. In March of 2020 the Suffolk County Legislature approved Resolution 216-2020, finally closing out the long acquisition process for this historic property. “This property is ideal for preservation and a perfect fit for the community,” said Legislator Sunderman. “Not only are we preserving open space, we are working towards the historic restoration of the house.” When Legislator Sunderman first took office in 2018, he was approached by the Mastic Peninsula Historical Society, which was seeking a location out of which to operate the organization’s home base and to provide a historical attraction in the community. They brought this historic property to Legislator Sunderman’s attention, as it had recently become available for purchase. In a combined effort with
Partnership for Historic Preservation the Town of Brookhaven and working closely with Suffolk County Planning Director Sarah Lansdale, Suffolk County Parks Commissioner Jason Smagin, and Suffolk County Historian Richard Martin, Legislator Sunderman was able to utilize aquifer protection funding to move forward with both an appraisal and a purchase. This was a long process that not only needed approval by the
community.” As part of the acquisition of this property, Legislator Sunderman worked closely with the Town of Brookhaven, particularly Supervisor Romaine and Councilman Panico. In order to see this become a reality for both the historical society and the community, the town agreed to maintain the property when

That’s the fun part of this project. The group will keep the public informed of our progress as time goes by.” “I look forward to what is in store for this property in the future,” said Legislator Sunderman. “There is still much work to be done, but I am confident that by continuing our partnership with the Town of Brookhaven and the Historical Society we will one day have another historical asset in our community.”
Man Arrested for DWI After Crashing Motor Vehicle Into a House Suffolk County Police early Monday morning arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after he crashed a motor vehicle into a house in Shirley. Jefersson Soysos was driving a 2011 Kia Forte southbound on Chanel Drive East when he drove through the intersection at Floyd Road South, struck a brick stanchion, overturned and crashed through the front wall of the residence located at 395 Floyd Road South at
approximately 12:25 a.m. Soysos was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue for treatment of non-lifethreatening injuries. The sole occupant of the house at the time of the crash was not injured. Soysos, 19, of 111 Chanel Drive East, was arrested and charged with Driving While Intoxicated. He is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.
Legislator Nick Caracappa to be Special Guest at SCWA’s Virtual “WaterTalk” Meeting on January 19 In one of his initial undertakings as Suffolk County Legislator, Nick Caracappa has been asked to participate as a “Special Guest” at the Suffolk County Water Authority’s WaterTalk Virtual Community Forum. This event, which is open to the public will take place on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at 6:00pm via Zoom. The purpose of this meeting is for SCWA to address the many questions raised by the public about the underground aquifer system and water quality in Suffolk County. Prior to taking the oath as Legislator, Caracappa was a 34-year employee of SCWA, and served 14 years as President of the Utility Workers’ Union of America, AFL-CIO Local-393. He shares the Water Authority’s concerns for our aquifer, and will continue addressing water quality issues in his new role as Legislator. “It is vital for all residents to understand the significance of our aquifer, the sole source of drinking water here in Suffolk County,” stated Legislator Caracappa. “We must all do our part to protect this valuable resource. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN Pubic power, democratically run, has long been a dream on Long Island— even before the creation of the Long Island Power Authority. In 1986, just before LIPA came into being, the Suffolk County Legislature passed a resolution to establish a Suffolk County-based Consumer Electric Company of Long Island. Unanimously, the members of the legislature approved its creation. The resolution was championed by Gregory Blass of Jamesport, then the legislature’s presiding officer and a leader in the fight against the Shoreham and Jamesport nuclear power plant projects. The Long Island Lighting Company, a private utility with a terrible record over the decades—it was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 1930s and 1940s— sought to build seven to eleven nuclear power plants in Suffolk County. Mr. Blass was first deeply involved in challenging LILCO’s proposed fournuclear plant Jamesport, indeed he entered politics and ran for the Suffolk Legislature because of Jamesport. LILCO’s Jamesport scheme was ultimately defeated but, meanwhile, LILCO was constructing its Shoreham nuclear plant, one of three LILCO
wanted to build at its Shoreham site. And Mr. Blass, as a Suffolk legislator and then also presiding officer of the 18-member panel, worked to stop the Shoreham plant from going into commercial operation. Meanwhile, there was a growing view in Suffolk that not only did LILCO’s nuclear power plant projects need to be stopped but LILCO needed to be eliminated.

The measure establishing a Consumer Electric Company of Long Island was signed into law by then Suffolk County Executive Peter F. Cohalan on July 28, 1986.
LIPA got underway a few months later. It was created by the Long Island Power Act of 1985 which formed it as a public power utility that would have an elected board. But almost immediately Mario Cuomo killed that element. Instead, Mr. Cuomo arranged for LIPA to be run by a board of directors picked by politicians: most by the governor, and also by the State Assembly speaker and State Senate majority leader.
It was to have an elected board of 15 members voted on from districts of equal population that would be established in Suffolk County. It was be to a non-partisan entity. Indeed, the law establishing the Consumer Electric Company specified that “no political party shall be entitled to nominate candidates” for its board. Further, “no candidate for director shall be permitted to receive campaign contributions from any political party or organization or any political action committee.” Also, none of the directors would be allowed to profit from her or his role.

Cohen Gives Mets a New Years Present

BY TOM BARTON When billionaire Steve Cohen bought the Mets, Metropolitan fans everywhere rejoiced with hopes that he would spend like he has on his priceless paintings. New York radio lit up with calls of what could be under the new Cohen ownership and talks of a super team were on everyone’s lips. Even the most doubtful New York fan had to admit that anyone had to be better than the Wilpons and that the future in Queens was bright. Line makers set the Mets with preseason odds of 16 to 1 which put them inside the top 10 World Series favorites. That’s quite a leap of faith from line makers because the Mets didn’t even make the playoffs last season. Speaking to some prominent line makers the feeling was “Cohen will make a move” and they had to price that into the equation. Most thought JT Realmuto would be that move, but in typical Mets fashion they decided on the cheaper
option, albeit still good, James McCann. Mets fans were left waiting for that big move.

Lindor is a free agent after this season and will need to be signed by the Mets long term. The 27 year old is entering his prime and just turned down Cleveland’s offer of $200 million dollars. He is expected to receive close to $300 million to resign but Cohen’s billions should make that
candidate. His defense up the middle is outstanding and should help the staff and his 5 tool talent is alluring to every baseball fan. What makes Lindor even

He returned to the mound last year and showed he still had it with a 2.91 ERA in 12 starts. Before he went down he led the league 4 seasons ago with 18 wins and the next season produced 17. This trade has to be thought of as an A+ move for the Mets. It put them back in the spotlight, captured the backpages in New York, and elevated Steve Cohen to the heights that Mets fans hoped he’d be. Line makers agree as they set the Mets as the #5 team in the National League this year at +900 to win the NL pennant. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers (+200), San Diego Padres (+350) and Atlanta Braves (+400) are above the Mets for the NL pennant.

New Book Clubs for Teens at the Library Advanced Battle of the Books – Join the Team! Teens in grades 9 through 12 that have a love of reading and relish a good competition are encouraged to be a part of our battle team. Libraries across Suffolk County will each have one team that has become experts on the same two books. Teams battle it out answering trivia questions about the books. This year the books are: Cinder by Marissa Meyer and The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson. The competition will be held in late April via Zoom. Cinder is an imaginative retelling of the Cinderella story, with as a mechanic cyborg in the future. Central to the story is a deadly disease that kills off characters very close to Cinder and Prince Kai, and there are some scenes of the dying in quarantine. War is threatened by a queen of the moon, who evilly manipulates her subjects and kills off those she can't control. Cinder is a great tough-girl character who can fix anything and acts selflessly to help those in danger. Cinder is Book 1 of the Lunar Chronicles series.

Performance Bonds and Labor/Material Bonds are a requirement of each contract as called for in the General Conditions. The Board of Commissioners reserves the right to reject any or all bids submitted and to waive any informality in any bid, and shall, further make awards in any way it deems advisable to the best interest of the District. The successful Bidder shall execute a formal contract to be prepared by the Attorney for the Fire District, if the Board
of Commissioners so requires. All bids received after the time stated in the Notice to Bidders may not be considered and will be returned unopened to the bidder. The bidder assumes the risk of any delay in the mail or in the Notice to Bidders 2 handling of the mail by employees of the Fire Department. Whether sent by mail or by means of personal delivery, the bidder assumes responsibility for having its bid deposited on time at the place specified. Each Bidder must deposit, with their sealed bid, security in an amount not less than 5% of the total bid in the proper form subject to the conditions set forth in the Instructions to Bidders. Each Bidder shall agree to hold their bid price for (45) days after the formal bid opening. Attention of the Bidders is specifically directed to the minimum wage rates to be paid under the contract. Per Article 8, Section 220 of the New York State Labor Law, every contractor and
subcontractor shall submit to the District within thirty (30) days after issuance of its first payroll, and every thirty (30) days thereafter, a transcript of the original payroll record, as provided by this article, subscribed and affirmed as true under penalties of perjury. The Fire District shall be required to receive and maintain such payroll records. The original payrolls or transcripts shall be preserved for three (3) years from the completion of the work on the award project.
