Zariel Macchia Honored by Library with Proclamation

William Floyd sophomore was Zariel, a 10th grade student at the overall winner of the 5K William Floyd High School, is the first female athlete Run for Literacy Zariel Macchia, of Shirley, was presented with a proclamation from the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library for winning the 21st Annual 5K Run for Literacy held on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at Smith Point County Park.

to be the overall winner of the Annual 5K Run since its inception in 2001. The event raised more than $15,000 which will be reinvested into literacy programs at the MasticsMoriches-Shirley Community Library such as books and scholarships.
Zariel finished the race with a remarkable time of 17:08 – a pace of just five minutes and 31 seconds per mile – “an amazing athletic performance” as stated in the proclamation. “[We] look forward to her future efforts that will continue to make the community proud.” Next year’s race is Saturday, September 9, 2023. Poised for Victory, Zeldin Draws Thousands to Save New York Rally

Thousands of Long Islanders rallied Saturday in support of the Bay Area’s own Lee Zeldin for governor and his message of saving New York State. Joined on stage by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, the two former colleagues in the House of Representatives painted a vivid picture of how New York could be under the right leadership. “Our once great Empire State is suffering under the crushing wave of crime, inflation and record taxes brought to us by Kathy Hochul and her Progressive Democrat colleagues,” Zeldin told a cheering crowd estimated at over 5,000 in Hauppauge. “On November 8, you, the voters, will put an end to the reign of

terror that Hochul’s policies have wreaked on our once vibrant state.” DeSantis, pointing out that Florida’s population has soared due to fleeing New Yorkers, said his law-andorder administration has kept
crime to a minimum. “We have similar populations, yet we spend billions less for much better services,” DeSantis noted, adding that Florida has overtaken New York in student achievement. The two states have similar K-12 school

enrollments, but New York employs 31% more teachers and administrators than Florida. For public welfare programs, the Sunshine State, which doesn’t have an income tax, spent $28 billion while New York doled out a whopping $71 billion. DeSantis spoke of his efforts to keep his state open during the COVID pandemic saying that the Florida economy is performing much better than New York’s. “You can have similar results simply by changing leadership and Lee Zeldin is exactly the man who can make a difference starting on day one,” the governor said. Both he and Zeldin are against the forced vaccination of children and support giving back the jobs of New Yorkers who were fired for refusing the shots. Describing what it was like for his daughters to experience a gang-related shooting in front of their home in Shirley, Zeldin said he would declare
a crime emergency as one of his first acts as governor and put an end to the cashless bail and defund the police agenda of the Democrats. The former state senator and Army veteran promised to use his authority as governor by firing Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for refusing to prosecute criminals in order to set an example for his lawand-order platform. “Lee Zeldin is the right leader at the right moment with the right policies to get New York out of the mess the Democrats have put us in,” said Assemblyman Joe DeStefano who appeared at the rally with a slate of local GOP candidates poised to ride a red wave into Albany and Washington. “Judging by the huge turnout on only a day’s notice, the people know it’s time for a drastic change in leadership and Lee Zeldin and his running mates, myself included, will take us in an entirely new direction.”

Dan Buckley Named 2022 Probation Officer of the Year
At the 18th Annual Suffolk County Probation Officers Association Golf Outing on September 29, Legislator Mazzarella and his colleagues had the opportunity to congratulate and recognize Supervising Probation officer Dan Buckley as the 2022 Probation Officer of the Year. Dan Buckley began his career in the probation department in 2001 and has been a true asset to the department since undertaking this position. He is known as a stalwart supporter of his fellow coworkers by continuously displaying a strong sense of teamwork and his desire to be a good union member. Dan’s commitment truly became evident starting in 2020, following the cancellation of the Annual Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride in Babylon as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dan took it upon himself to organize and coordinate a group ride in Calverton to mirror the intentions of that cause, and raise money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Dan has become an integral part of the Suffolk County Probation department’s involvement in the Wounded Warrior Ride in the preceding years, volunteering both the use of his personal bus, along with his willingness to repair and provide bicycles to other probation officers who participate. In 2021, Dan organized a second ride in Calverton Park and his efforts helped to raise more than $4,000 for the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
Eastport-South Manor Senior Nominated for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Award
Earlier this year he organized a third ride, this time raising almost $10,000 for the Foundation. “I am always happy to recognize Suffolk County Employees who go above and beyond for charities such as these,” said Legislator Jim Mazzarella. “What makes this recognition especially gratifying is that the money raised went to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in support of true national heroes.” The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a non-profit organization that honors the sacrifice of Firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. They also honor our military
and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country. They host several fundraising events throughout the year and offer many programs that support the families of victims of September 11, 2001, and our men and women in the armed forces. “I want to thank the Probation Officers and their families and friends for participating in these events and contributing to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation,” stated Legislator Mazzarella. “I look forward to seeing this event grow and continuing to honor the memory of September 11, 2001.”

The RPI merit award recognizes the superlative academic achievement of students during their junior year. Its goal is to motivate students toward careers in science, engineering and technology. Brookhaven Highway Department Installs and Replaces Traffic Signs Throughout Former Village of Mastic Beach repaired or maintained. “The process to install and replace the hundreds of street name, speed limit and stop signs has been laborious,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “Thanks to the funding secured by Assemblyman Murray the project is now complete and
the regulations, warnings and guidance information provided by the signage in Mastic Beach meets all regulations.” “Replacing the damaged or missing street signs was a matter of safety. In an emergency, every second matters and if first
responders go down the wrong road because a sign was missing, it could have deadly consequences. I thank Superintendent Losquadro and his staff for doing such a great job," said former NYS Assemblyman and current candidate for the NYS Senate, Dean Murray.

The Brookhaven Highway Department recently completed the installation and replacement of traffic signs on all roadways within the boundaries of the former Village of Mastic Beach. This project was funded in part by a Multi-Modal grant secured in 2018 by then NYS Assemblyman Dean Murray in the amount of $50,000. Prior to their replacement, street
name signs throughout the former Village were on white posts with green lettering. Once the Village was dissolved as of Dec. 31, 2017, and funding was secured, the process to inventory and then replace all of the signage to meet the national standards defined by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) began. In total, more than 500 street name, warning and regulatory signs were replaced,

Residents Enjoy 34th Annual Spooky Walk Over 1,000 local residents took part in the annual Spooky Walk sponsored by Camp Paquatuck. The annual event which began in 1989 is held to raise awareness and funds to support the camp that is located in Moriches. The Rotary Club of the Moriches runs Camp Paquatuck. The Rotary is dedicated to the benefit of children and adults with disabilities aged 6 - 50 with year-round programs. The camp sponsors and services hundreds of children each year. Everyone enjoys the annual event which always is held the last 2 weekends in October and you can also enjoy food and beverages and even purchase merchandise from Spooky Walk.

PSEGLI Funds New Downtown Planters
Recently, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and the Rocky Point Civic Association met in Rocky Point to thank PSEG Long Island for a $3,387 PSEG Long Island Economic Development Beautification Grant. The grant was facilitated by Councilwoman Bonner, who worked with PSEG Long Island to secure the project funding. It allowed the Rocky Point Civic Association to purchase 13 large planters filled with perennials and greenery placed on the sidewalks in front of stores along Broadway in Rocky Point. 118 Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School Students Qualified as AP Scholars
It is with pride that the Eastport-South Manor Central School District announces that 118 high school students have qualified as Advanced Placement Scholars by the College Board. Fifty-nine currently enrolled Eastport-South Manor Jr.-Sr. High School students earned the designation of AP Scholar for their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams, while the remaining 59 students graduated this past June. The College Board’s AP Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still enrolled in high school and to earn college credit, advanced placement or both for successful performance on the AP exams. About 18% of the more than 1.6 million high school students in more than 16,000 secondary schools worldwide who took the AP Exams performed at a level to warrant designation as an AP Scholar. • Twenty current students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of 3.5 or higher on all AP Exams taken, and grades

21 WFSD Elementary Students Selected for SCMEA PEAK Festival Twenty-one students from Moriches, Tangier Smith and William Floyd elementary schools recently participated in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association (SCMEA) PEAK (Parents, Educators and Kids) Festival at Northport High School, an annual gathering of just 200 talented fourth-grade student-musicians from all across Suffolk County who are nominated by their teachers and selected by SCMEA. This year’s festival included a series of musical workshops in which parents, educators and kids had the opportunity to make music together in a collaborative setting. “It is a big honor to be selected for this event,” stated PEAK Festival co-chairs Cristen Salisbury and Jennifer Fischer in a nomination letter to parents. “You should be quite proud of your child’s musical accomplishments.” During this year’s PEAK Festival, the first in-person gathering since 2019, students, parents and music teachers rotated through three different workshops, focusing on the ukulele, musical theater, folk dance, singing games, dance cardio

COUNTY By Barbara LaMonica When residents in Suffolk County cast their ballots for their candidates on November 8th or for early voting, Propositions I & II are on the flip side of the ballot. To weigh in on these propositions, voters should turn their ballots over. Proposition I, (the Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act of 2022), asks voters to consider approving $4.2 billion for environmental and health protection, and capital projects to counter climate change. Reached for comment on Saturday, 1st District New York State Senator, Anthony Palumbo, said funding from Proposition I is, by and large, not yet designated to specific projects. However, Palumbo spoke to the positive impact funding from this proposal would translate to for the First Senate District and Long Island at large, and efforts he will employ to secure revenue for local initiatives. "This is important to all Long Islanders," Palumbo said, "because we drink from a sole source aquifer. In my District (Senate District 1), we have more linear feel, or more waterfront land than any other District in the State," Palumbo explained. Palumbo said that while there are no geographic targets in mind for distribution of funds from Proposition I, he underscored the

Flip the Ballot for Props I & II importance to rally for revenue to be driven to Long Island and specifically, the 1st Senate District: "I believe we are entitled to more funding by virtue of the geographic nature of Long Island," he said. While the decision on which projects to allocate monies will be determined by the Governor's Division of the Budget, Palumbo noted, "They are intending to spread it around the state." With no specifically listed projects at press time, categories for funding include: $1.1 billion for restoration and flood risk reduction, $100 million of which will go towards coastal rehabilitation projects and projects to address inland flooding. Approximately $650 million is allocated for open space land conservation and recreation including $300 million for land conservation, and another $150 million for farmland preservation, with an additional $75 million allocated for fish hatcheries. Another $1.5 billion is dedicated for climate change mitigation, including $400 million for green building projects, $100 million for climate adaptation and mitigation, $200 for cleaning air and water pollution in disadvantaged communities, and $500 million to acquire zero emissions school buses. Water quality improvement will incorporate $650 million,

(including $200 million for wastewater infrastructure, $250 million for municipal storm water improvements and $200 million for additional water related projects).
Proposition II closes loopholes for term limits for certain Suffolk County positions. There is a limit which shall not exceed the maximum of 12 years for the
offices of Suffolk County Executive, Suffolk County Comptroller, and Suffolk County Legislature.
Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Achieves Prestigious Accreditation The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office was recently accredited once again through the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council. Originally accredited in 2012, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office began the reaccreditation process in 2021. The accreditation lasts for five years. “The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, originally accredited in 2012, demonstrates a high level of excellence and professionalism in the field of law enforcement by continuing to meet the standards established by the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council. The Council is proud to once again award accreditation to the agency for the period of September 8, 2022 through September 7, 2027,” said the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council. Accreditation is a progressive and contemporary way of helping police agencies evaluate and

"A Celebration of Trees"
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN It’s enchanting and important: “A Celebration of Trees,” an exhibit at the Southampton Arts Center. The inspiration for it came from the experience of artist Laurie Dolphin at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic at her home, amid trees, off Fresh Pond on Shelter Island. “During COVID I was on Shelter Island surrounded by trees and I was isolated,” she relates. The “trees were talking to me. I would feel their interconnectivity.” She had a “dream” of organizing an exhibit honoring and recognizing the significance of trees. Knowing “I cannot do this alone,” she enlisted Daniela Kronemeyer and Coco Myers to work with her in being co-curators of a possible exhibit. It is outstanding—and includes the work of 77 artists from 20 countries. Dolphin explains that the aim was not only to present the “diversity” of trees from around the world but also to do it with a diversity of art: paintings, photography, sculpture, film, etchings and poetry. Upon entering the exhibit, one encounters a narrative on a wall declaring: “A Celebration of Trees is an ecological multi-media exhibition

This exhibit showcases the beauty and mystery of trees while inspiring viewers to thoughtfully contemplate how to protect them.” The eloquent narratives on the walls of the many rooms that the exhibit encompasses are the words of poets Megan and Scott Chaskey of Sag Harbor. Scott is also the author of books, a farmer and pioneer of the community farming movement. At the entrance, too, is a striking sculpture, in wood, done by Megan’s father, the late Bill King. “Trees have been called the most successful form of life within the great wheel of nature,” says one of the narratives.
Information and art relating to the redwoods of California which “can live as long as 3,000 years” it is noted, are featured.
The exhibit includes photos by famed Brazilian photojournalist Sebastiao Salgado of trees and Indigenous people in the Amazon, the world’s largest tropical rainforest—which is under extreme threat.
Focusing on Long Island, there are presentations involving Indigenous people here and trees—notably the white pine with its medicinal values for them.
There are photos by Beth Moon who has traveled the world photographing trees notably the Baobab tree in Africa which can live for more than 2,000 years.

There is a series of nine etchings by master printmaker Dan Welden, who came from Babylon to Sag Harbor, of evergreen trees, their limbs bedecked by snow. Photos of palm trees taken by artist Andy Warhol, long a resident of Montauk, are presented. It is
explained: “Little known and rarely exhibited are Andy Warhol’s black and white silver gelatin photographs” and how Warhol “viewed trees and the natural landscape with just as much importance as the celebrityfilled arts and culture scenes for which he is most famous.” There are “60,000 species of trees,” the exhibit points out. “For over 300 million years, trees have helped stabilize and improve environmental conditions for life on our planet,” it is noted. A partner, too, in the exhibit is the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive. As a flier available at the

Two weeks ago, my wife and I went to Vermont to witness the glorious burst of color of trees in Vermont starting in early October. Now, in late October, trees on Long Island are also abounding in color— just one of the gifts they provide. “A Celebration of Trees” will be running Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through December 18. The Southampton Art Museum is at 25 Jobs Lane, Southampton. Admission is free. What you will get out of it is enormous.

The Odds Will Rise

The Yankees season is done, and it ended with a whisper. New York was embarrassed by the Houston Astros in their exit from the season and by all accounts everything they did went away quietly. That will be a stark contrast to what this off season will bring for New York fans, and it all surrounds the 62 home run man, Aaron Judge. Reports circled this week that Judge unfollowed the Yankees on some social media platforms and thus began the whirlwind that will ensue for the next few months. We all saw this coming, but what do we see next? Sports books around the country have put up odds on Judge and what team he will likely bolt to, if he decides to leave the Yankees. Did you notice how I didn't write, if he decides to leave New York? That is because the Mets are listed with the second best odds to land the slugger at +250, and there is no doubt that Uncle Stevie wants to make that sort of splash and overtake the back pages in the Big Apple. The Dodgers are
next at +350, and with their giant pocketbooks and recent history of just throwing money at the ball club they certainly can't be ruled out. The Astros come in at +750, the Rangers at +850, the hated Red Sox are 10:1 along with the White Sox, Blue Jays and Phillies all at 10 to 1. While the big money from the Mets and Dodgers make sense, Judge's brand and image are things he and his camp have carefully sculpted in his time in pinstripes. Will he throw away all that good feeling for a simple payday? Maybe. The Red Sox and Astros will certainly destroy his brand, and the Phillies, White Sox and Jays all seem like decided longshots. So, that leaves just one team. One team where they can pay him what he wants, give him the years he wants, and really won't hurt his brand. That is the odds leading San Francisco Giants. The Giants lead the pack with just 2 to 1 odds to land the slugger and it makes perfect sense. Judge can claim to baseball fans that he isn't 'all about
the money' because San Francisco is his hometown. He will get very little ill will from Yankees fans who watch him go to another league entirely and the Giants will make
him the face of the franchise, along with the coin he wants, to become what Barry Bonds was in the Bay Area. Yankees fans, this will be a tough
few months, and the Yankees are still expected to make a solid run at Judge. But, the writing is on the wall and it seems that beyond that wall might be McCovey Cove.

Should You Add Your Child as a Joint Account Owner?
Q: Should I add my child as a joint owner on my bank account? A:
The running joke about lawyers not giving you a straight answer applies here: "it depends." Adding your child as a co-owner on your bank account can be positive or negative depending on your intent and situation.
A common reason to add an individual as a co-owner on an account is to avoid court involvement at your death. Whether you have a Will or not, any assets titled in your sole name without a named beneficiary must go through the courts. This process is Probate if you die with a Will and Administration if you do not have a Will. Many people justifiably want to avoid this onerous court process and adding a joint owner on an account seems like a simple solution. Another reason to add a child as joint owner is so they can assist in your day-to-day finances. However, this simple method of avoiding probate does not fit every family circumstance. At your death the account will pass directly to
the joint owner. This works when you want that child to inherit 100% of the account. This is less ideal if you only have your child on the account for convenience’s sake but want the account to pass to multiple beneficiaries at death. Worse still is if the account contains significant assets and you never intended for only one child to inherit the account. It is also important to understand that a joint owner has the same rights you have as an account holder - and the same risks. Your joint account holder can access the account and withdraw 100% of the funds. Moreover, if the joint owner has creditors, the account is subject to creditor collection. Your financial institution may offer superior options that also avoid the court process. Some banks allow you to name "transfer on death beneficiaries" to certain accounts. This avoids probate but does not allow children or their creditors to have ready access to the account funds. If you would like for

a child to assist you with finances during your lifetime, you can add them as power of attorney under the account. Some institutions allow you to create a convenience account that names your child a signor, with no ownership or transfer on death rights. This is not to say that you should not name your child as a joint
owner. You may be completely confident with your child having unlimited access to the funds, both during your life and after your death. Sometimes we add the named Executor as a joint account holder on a bank account so they have ready access to cash. But when we do so, it is only one piece in the larger estate plan we create with
a client. A joint account holder trumps a named beneficiary and your Will. You must be mindful of how each piece fits together. Whether a joint account with a child is beneficial depends not only on what you are trying to accomplish, but on how it fits with the rest of your estate plan. To understand the pros and cons of naming your child as a joint account owner, consult with an estate planning attorney. The way each of your assets pass at death is part of a bigger puzzle that an attorney can help you piece together. Veterans Day
BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. In 1921, an unknown World War I American soldier was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This site became the focal point of reverence for America’s veterans. Similar ceremonies occurred earlier in England and France, where an unknown soldier was buried in each nation’s highest place of honor. These memorial gestures all took place on November 11, giving universal recognition to the celebration ending World War 1 fighting at 11 a.m., November 11, 1918. The day became known as “Armistice Day.” Actually the war ended June 28, 1919, but the fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the allied nations and Germany went into effect. Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in
1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Later that year Eisenhower
designated the Administrator of Veteran’s Affairs as Chairman of a Veterans Day National Committee. That chairman was assigned to coordinate at the national level necessary planning for the observance of the day.
Then in 1968 Congress moved Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in October, which went in effect in 1971. However, in 1975 President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11, due to the historical significance of
the date. Because it is a federal holiday, some American workers and many students have Veterans Day off from work or school. Non-essential federal government offices are closed. No mail is delivered. All federal workers are paid for the holiday; those who are required to work on the holiday sometimes receive holiday pay for that day. Since our government established Veterans Day to honor us, we need to not only put our flag out, but wear a cap or jacket to indentify us as veterans. More important since we have left active duty and became veterans we are all still buddies and need to take this opportunity to join together and see how we can help each other and also work together to protect our freedom that our comrades gave their lives for. So lots take advantage of the day and grow together. We are all brothers and sisters from our military days on.

Zeldin 101
BY DAN GRANITE There is nothing flashy or spectacular about Lee Zeldin. That is his greatest strength. He is direct, straight-forward, and inspires confidence. In the tradition of great statesmen like Harry Truman he “says what he means and means what he says.” The reason he is soaring at the polls is that he is addressing the issue of the left’s non-accountability on matters such as the inflationriddled economy, safety in our homes, streets, and transports, and the spiraling climate of decadence and corruption in our statewide community. Lee Zeldin has made unequivocal statements regarding abortion and made it clear that he has no intention of challenging its accessibility. His statements on women’s reproductive rights are far more precise and focused than Governor Hochul’s platitudes regarding crime and taxation. Congressman Zeldin graduated from William
Floyd High School in Mastic Beach and from SUNY Albany and SUNY Law School. At the time he was New York’s youngest attorney at age 23. After completing the Army ROTC program, he served four years on active duty as a Military Intelligence Officer, Prosecutor, and Military Magistrate. While assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division in the summer of 2006, Zeldin was deployed to Tikrit, Iraq with an infantry battalion of fellow paratroopers in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Followed is his service on active duty to the Army Reserve where he currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was elected to the State Senate in 2010 where he led the effort to repeal the MTA Payroll Tax for 80% of employers, a job-killing tax that was hurting New York’s small businesses. He also created the Pfc. Joseph Dwyer Program, a peer-to-

peer counseling program for veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder. The program started in Suffolk County but he promoted it until it flourished across the state. He also saw to it that the Saltwater Fishing License Fee was repealed, a boon to tens of thousands of Long Island Fishermen. In 2014 Lee Zeldin was elected to the Congress representing New York’s
first District where he has continued to secure important victories. Among them are the successful effort to save Plum Island, a $2 billion dollar Electron Ion Collider to Brookhaven National Lab, and the ushering into law of his Adult Day Health Care Act to aid veterans who are 70% or more disabled and his bill to safeguard veterans’ homeownership opportunities.
Congressman Zeldin also secured a new healthcare clinic on the East end of Long Island, saved a vital communications spectrum for local first responders, helped lead the effort to permanently reauthorize the Zadroga Act and Victim Compensation Fund for 9/11 first responders and their families, and advanced several Army Corp projects for his district, including the over $1 billion Fire Island to Montauk Point project.
