With Election Day results showing former vice president, Joe Biden, the winner of the Presidential race over President Donald J. Trump, numerous outstanding lawsuits in several states remained active at press time in the President’s pursuit for a final tabulation that would reflect a fair count of all legitimate ballots cast in Election 2020. Meanwhile, in federal and state races here in Suffolk County, the muchanticipated “blue wave” that Democrats projected they would see on Election night, was eclipsed by Republicans with GOP incumbents not only maintaining their seats, but Republican challengers flipping seats from blue to red. Suffolk County Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia said in an interview the day after Election day, “Last night was a great night for the taxpayers, homeowners, small business owners, front line responders and law enforcement men and women. We planned to make this our Super Bowl where we’d close in on the fourth quarter and be victorious.” Garcia continued, “Unofficial results have proven us proud with the reelection of Lee Zeldin turning out with historic numbers, while retaining the Second Congressional seat with Andrew Garbarino.” Garbarino, with 58% of the vote over Babylon Town Councilwoman Jackie Gordon’s 41%, succeeds Peter King who is retiring after serving 14 terms in December. Garcia also noted that the Third Senate District flipped from blue to red where Alexis Weik defeated one-term Democrat incumbent Monica Martinez by a 57% to 43% margin. “As Suffolk County sits today,” Garcia said, “we’ll have five Republican senators fighting for Long Island values. Ground zero for this election was Suffolk County where the Republican Committee, which I am so proud of, had hundreds of people going door to door, and thousands on the phones.” United States First District Congressman Lee Zeldin came out on top on Election night over Democrat opponent Dr. Nancy Goroff, the SUNY Stony Brook faculty member and scientist who was defeated in her first time at bat for elected office. Zeldin’s clocked in with a 61% lead over Goroff’s 39% before absentee ballots were counted. In his victory speech on Election night and in a subsequent press release, Zeldin thanked his supporters and doubled down on supporting front line workers and the men and women in blue which Democrats frequently spoke about defunding. Zeldin, a staunch supporter of law enforcement who has also demonstrated a strong record of constituent service since defeating 6-term Democrat incumbent Tim Bishop 12 years ago, said on Election night, “I am deeply honored and humbled that the families of Long Island have entrusted me to continue

Election Results Show GOP Maintains Lead in Suffolk representing our great Congressional District.” Zeldin, who successfully secured personal equipment for front line workers, and funding for CD-1 to battle Coronavirus, has reached across party lines to accomplish priorities. “Whether it’s Coronavirus response resources, the $2 billion Electron Ion Collider headed now to Brookhaven National Laboratory, combating MS-13, securing critical Army Corps of Engineers projects and much more, or work has delivered for Long Island families, just like our work with Democrats helped get the Great American Outdoors Act over the finish line, full funding for the National Estuary Program and SeaGrant, permanent funding for 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and many other priorities, Zeldin said.” Zeldin acknowledged Goroff and her team of volunteers for “running a hard fought campaign.” In the First Senate District where 44year Republican Senator Ken LaValle will be retiring in December, the seat was open for two challengers. Republican Second District Assemblyman Anthony Palumbo defeated Democrat candidate and founder of Parents for Meghan’s Law and the Crimes Victim Center on Election night before absentee ballots 57% to 43%. In an interview the day after the elections, Palumbo said he believes what put him over the top of the polls on election night was his representation of constituents over the past seven years serving in the assembly. “I like to think the constituency is happy with how I represent them; this, coupled with the fact that one party rule created an unsafe situation in New York State,” Palumbo said. “I had the huge backing of law enforcement who came out in force. The police associations were so supportive and worked so hard to get this campaign where it’s currently at. I have, and I will always back the blue,” Palumbo said. “Our communities want to be safe . . . and the Democrats’ agenda is not consistent with suburban life.” As Palumbo prepares to make the transition from the state assembly to the state senate, Palumbo pointed out, “I’m excited and humbled to be this close to succeeding Ken LaValle. As a friend and a public servant, I look forward to collaborating with him if this goes my way.” Ahearn would have to win 80% of the absentee ballots to topple Palumbo who, after receiving 74,289 votes, was ahead of Ahearn by 18,735 votes on Election night. Alexis Weik, who ran on the Republican and Conservative lines and who currently serves as Islip Town’s Receiver of Taxes, took a commanding lead over Martinez when polls closed on Election night. Running her campaign on the promise of lowering taxes and touting staunch support for law enforcement agencies, Weik addressed priorities on her agenda as Senator as she transitions to represent New

I am proud to have the support of Councilman Panico, who is a strong advocate for his communities and our suburban Long Island way of life.” As Senator, Weik has pledged to restore Property Tax rebates that saved Suffolk County homeowners $700 a year in taxes, and to repeal the bail law that allows 90% of criminals to walk free after their arrest. During his interview with South Shore Press, in speaking about his and Weik’s victories to the New York State Senate along with other pending Senate races Upstate, Assemblyman Palumbo said the Senate majority in New York could very well flip to a Republican majority in the next election cycle. Like Palumbo, Weik received the unprecedented alliance of law enforcement organizations as well as by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. Third Assembly District Republican Incumbent Joe DeStefano won reelection to a second term. DeStefano defeated his Democrat challenger, Jon Polgar by a 63% to 37% margin. DeStefano, whose resume includes a law enforcement background, retired after serving 27 years in the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department. DeStefano ran a campaign that supported law enforcement. He believes
that the Democrats’ position on bail reform and defunding police are what put him over the top on Election night. DeStefano, who knocked on doors to convey his message to constituents, is a staunch supporter of law enforcement and public safety. “People wanted to talk to their candidate, and they were telling me they want to see more cops and they want to be safer.” DeStefano said a priority on his agenda for the next two year term will be to repeal bail reform. Additionally, DeStefano noted, “I’ve never wavered from my philosophy I’m always willing to work across the aisle to advocate the people I represent.” In other races, Republican Jodi Giglio overwhelmingly prevailed over Laura Jenns Smith in the Second Assembly District race by a 62% to 36% margin. Long time Democrat First District Assemblyman Fred Thiele, Jr. won reelection with 53% of the vote before absentee ballots over his opponent, Heather Collins, who captured 47% of the vote. While Democrat Fourth District Assemblyman Steve Englebright was trailing Republican challenger George Santos 47% to 52%, it is being projected that once absentee ballots are tallied, Englebright will win re-election. In the Second Senate District held by John Flanagan, the projected winner is Republican Mario Mattera who was leading with 64% of the vote over Democrat candidate Mike Siderakis with 36%. In Senate District 5, Democrat incumbent James Gaughran was trailing and could lose his seat to Republican challenger Edmund Smyth 41% to 51%.
Even with final numbers pending the outcome of the absentee ballots, Garcia said, “We’re confident. We rolled up our numbers on Election day to offset any losses in absentee ballot tallies, so we’re cautiously optimistic.” Garcia pointed out that the party is “taking steps to ensure that counting of the final results are done with integrity and transparency.” Garcia also noted that Suffolk County’s numbers for Trump in 2020 “more than doubled the support received in 2016 with a 75,000 plurality this year in contrast to 30,000 in 2016. Suffolk County residents were asked to consider two propositions. The first proposition, asking residents to decide whether to extend the terms of Suffolk County legislators from two years to four years, was defeated. Currently, legislators can serve a maximum of six two-year terms, if that is the will of the voters. Term limits would still remain in effect with legislators serving a maximum of three four-year terms. If approved, the proposal would have gone into effect January 2022. A similar proposal put forth to voters in 2003 was overwhelmingly defeated. Proposition II was approved and now authorizes the County Legislature to not repay a $154 million debt back to the Assessment Stabilization Reserve Fund (ASRF). The legislature borrowed $29 million in 2011 and subsequently borrowed another $171.3 million money from the fund to fill budget holes.

Suffolk County Executive Bellone Announces The Implementation Of “ASAP To PSAP” Public Safety Initiative
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the implementation of the Automated Secure Alarm Protocol to Public Safety Answering Point (ASAP to PSAP) Initiative by Suffolk County Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services (FRES). This innovative program is a software interface that allows automatic alarm companies to send alarms directly to PSAPs without the need for an alarm company operator or a PSAP call taker. Suffolk County FRES, as the processor of Fire and EMS calls only, is the first and only non-law enforcement PSAP to implement the system in the Country. “When dealing with emergencies, especially fire and health related, every second counts,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “The ASAP to PSAP program drastically decreases processing and response times of critical services, and prevents errors that can occur when having a human operator. I have no doubt that saving this necessary time and ensuring the response teams are properly informed will help save countless lives.”
The software was created and designed in a cooperation between Central Station Alarm Association
(CSAA) and the Association of Public Safety Officials (APCO). The use of data communications
significantly reduces processing time and virtually eliminates errors that are inherent in voice communications, ensuring that accurate information is being transmitted to the PSAP. Since the implementation of ASAP to PSAP, FRES has seen the average processing time for automatic alarms drop from an average of two minutes to just under 10 seconds. The result can be an increase in the likelihood of a fire being more quickly extinguished and could be a major difference in a medical emergency patient, when every second counts. The ASAP platform does not impact the monitoring centers initial actions, the alarm being received, nor the efforts being made to verify the alarm with the customer. ASAP enters the picture when the PSAP needs to be alerted of an emergency.

Created in 2017, the Distinguished Youth Award program invites teenagers ages 13 to 18 to set and work toward goals in at least two of four areas: Volunteer Service, which requires volunteering 200 hours to benefit members of the community; Personal Development, which requires assessing one’s own skills and spending 100 hours toward personal improvement; Exploration, which requires visiting 15 Suffolk County parks; and Physical Fitness, designed to increase participants’ level of physical activity through 100
Individuals who participate will be rewarded with one of the three medals based on the number of categories they complete. The Bronze Medal will be awarded to participants who complete two of the four listed program areas, while the Silver Medal will be awarded to individuals who complete three of the four areas. Participants who successfully complete all four areas will be rewarded with the highest level of achievement, the Gold Medal. “Young people in Suffolk County continue to inspire me with their resilience and dedication, even
as they cope with the challenges of a changing world. The ability to rise to challenges is exactly what the Distinguished Youth Award program aims to cultivate,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer Rob Calarco. “We want to encourage young people to get involved in their communities, to challenge them personally, and to teach them the value of setting goals and working diligently to achieve them – not just during this program but also throughout their lives. Through this program, students will use their time to serve others and the community at large through volunteer service; they will develop their personal interests as well as social and employment skills; and they will venture out into Suffolk County parks to explore nature and our ecosystem, all while working to improve their
mental and physical health. It is a pleasure to work with these young people year after year.” Registration for the 20202021 Distinguished Youth Award class is open through November 30, 2020. Meet the Student ExOfficio Board Member When tuning into the South Country Central School District’s YouTube channel to view the latest streamed board of education meeting, a new face has popped up on the virtual screen. During the Sept. 23 board of education meeting, Student Council President and Bellport High School senior Jack Frankie was appointed as the board’s newest student ex-officio board member for the 2020-2021 school year. President E. Anne Hayes welcomed Jack to his new position and said she will look forward to hearing his report each meeting. During his first report to the board, Jack relayed that school opened smoothly and students are cooperative and compliant with wearing masks. During future meetings, his job will be to report high school activities and happenings to the board and to relay important board business to the student council. “I am very excited to tell the Board of Education all of the great things that are happening at the high school despite the pandemic,” Jack said. “I think the high school is in the best shape it’s ever been.” In addition to his Student Council presidency, Jack is a member of the jazz band and plays the trumpet and euphonium. He’s an Advanced Placement student and a former cross-country athlete. His biggest interest, however, is acquiring his certification and flying hours as a student-pilot at BOCES, where he is in his second year of study to fly small planes and hot air balloons. Jack explained that his goal is to pursue a major in aviation management and to possibly pursue all FAA certification and licensing, in addition to pursuing space travel with NASA or Space X.

World renowned artist Elaine Thompson recently unveiled her recent painting of former and deceased President John Kennedy. People were remarking it’s her best work yet! Kennedy is seated on his favored sailing vessel during his younger, carefree days. A true likeness will surely be a favorite of Kennedy fans. Elaine is most noted for her golf art, which her Shinnecock U.S. Open poster is one of the most admired of her artistic works of PGA golf events. There were other items for sale such as beautiful full plants being sold by the Pilot Club, soaps, homemade jelly and crafts. Held in Bayport it was a beautiful fall day for a successful event which was well attended with everyone wearing masks.

Town of Brookhaven to Hold Eleventh Annual Polar Plunge at Cedar Beach to Benefit Special Olympics

Losquadro is announcing the sale of personalized video messages from Santa, in lieu of the annual Holiday Light Spectacular featuring in-person visits with Santa at the Holtsville Ecology Site. All proceeds from the sale of the video, which costs $25, will go directly to the feeding and care of the more than 100 animals residing there.

On Saturday, November 21, the Town of Brookhaven and the Special Olympics of New York will host the 11th Annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for a Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. The annual event raises funds and awareness for Special Olympics New York athletes in the Long Island region. More than 800 plungers braved the chilly water of the Long Island Sound last year to collectively raise over $152,000 for the Special Olympics.

Community Medicaid Eligibility in NY
Can my spouse and I apply for Community Medicaid?
Yes, spouses can apply together for Community Medicaid provided that they qualify as a “dual applicant.” Community Medicaid will pay for services in the home; including but not limited a home health aide to assist with activities of daily living. Medicaid is a means tested program and accordingly applicants must meet certain income and asset requirements. As a couple applying for Community Medicaid, the spouses cannot have more than $23,100.00 in countable resources. This typically includes bank accounts, brokerage accounts, non-qualified annuities, stocks, bonds and cash
value of life insurance policies. The primary residence is exempt and the applicants may have qualified (retirement) accounts in any amount assuming distributions are being taken on a monthly basis. Finally, an irrevocable prearranged burial account in any amount is an exempt asset for each applicant. For Community Medicaid the general rule for income is that dual applicant spouses may retain a monthly income of $1284.00 plus a disregard of $20 bringing the total to $1304.00. However, under this program any excess income can be directed to a Pooled Income Trust for the benefit of the Medicaid applicants and the monies deposited
into that trust can be used to pay the household expenses of the Medicaid applicants. You cannot open a “joint” Pooled Income Trust so typically you can open one trust under one of the spouses’ names OR you can open two trusts – one in each spouses’ name. As long as the correct overage is being deposited into a Pooled Income Trust, the excess income will be disregarded. For example, if one spouse has income of $2,000.00 and the other spouse has income of $1500.00, as a couple the total income is $3500.00, resulting in an overage of $2804.00. The overage can be deposited into one Pooled Income Trust in one spouses’ name or the $2804.00 can divided into two separate
Trusts. Depending on the specific circumstances and the amount of overage, it is usually decided on a case by case basis on which option is better for the dual applicants. Once the couple becomes eligible for Community Medicaid and the applicant is approved, there will need to be an evaluation with a Managed Long Term Care Company (MLTC). The MLTC will determine how many hours per day, days per week, the couple is eligible to have a home health aide comes to the house. Each applicant is evaluated and usually the hours are combined to determine how often the aide will go to the house. It is important to understand that Medicaid will typically only

authorize one aide per household. This means that the couple will not each get an aide but rather the one aide will care for both of them. Since the hours are being combined, usually couples have a better chance to qualify for more hours than an individual, but that is not guaranteed. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN Despite Democratic Party enrollment gains in Suffolk County—and Democrats now having an edge in enrollment here—many Republican candidates did well in last week’s election in Suffolk. According to the figures of the New York State Board of Elections, out of 1,124,295 registered voters in Suffolk, party enrollment as of November 1, 2020 was Democratic 390,128 and Republican 347,250. Compare that to 20 years ago. The board listed, as of November 1, 2000, 332,433 Democratic and 341,426 Republicans. Registered voters then totaled 873,074 Incidentally, regarding wording, my first newspaper editor in Suffolk, John A. Maher, when I started writing about politics here as a reporter back in 1962, emphasized that people enroll in a political party and register to vote. The words enroll or enrollment and register or registration are not
interchangeable, he stressed. But this distinction has eroded and these days the words are often used interchangeably. Well beyond nomenclature has come the flip between the Democratic and Republican Parties as to which has the most enrolled voters. The Democratic increase in Suffolk over the past 20 years: 57,695. Meanwhile, the Working Families Party, only established in 1998, now has 4,176 Suffolk voters enrolled in it, and often endorses Democratic candidates. Other election factors: the Conservative Party has 22,729 members (about the same as the 22,420 it had in 2000) and GOP candidates often also run on the Conservative line. The Independence Party has 46,437 members in Suffolk now, up from 16,699 20 years ago. And there is a whopping number of what the state board lists as “Blank” or unaffiliated voters in Suffolk now: 308,974, a rise from 251,543 in 2000. These
Republican Candidates Sweep Suffolk can easily be a “swing” factor in Suffolk County elections. With most enrollees Democrats, does this give Democratic candidates in Suffolk an advantage? Don’t tell that to the Democratic candidates here who lost last week. Clear-cut Republican victories include, in the lst Congressional District, three-term GOP incumbent Lee Zeldin defeating Democrat Nancy Goroff of Stony Brook. Also, Republican Anthony Palumbo of New Suffolk beat Democrat Laura Ahearn of Port Jefferson to fill the 6th District State Senate seat of retiring Republican Kenneth LaValle of Port Jefferson. And, in the 2nd State Assembly race for the seat now held by Mr. Palumbo, former Riverhead Town Board member Jodi Giglio of Baiting Hollow won over Democrat Laura M. JensSmith of Laurel. (Ms. Jens-Smith in 2017 became the first woman to be elected supervisor of Riverhead in its 226-year history.)
And there could be more GOP wins. As of this writing, among Democrats listed by the Suffolk County Board of Elections as also losing are former Babylon Town board member Jackie Gordon of Copiague in the 2nd Congressional District; 14-termer Steven Englebright of Setauket, chair of the Assembly’s Committee on Environmental Conservation, in the 4th Assembly District; and James Gaughran of Northport, former chairman of the Suffolk County Water Authority, in the 5th Senatorial District. But this is before the county board counts all absentee ballots. This wasn’t done the evening of Election Day along with the votes cast that day. The tabulation of absentee ballots, board officials have said, would only begin this week. There have been more than 140,000 absentee ballots cast in Suffolk this year, most due to the COVID-19 pandemic causing people to not want to go to polling
places to vote. Most, according to the board, have come from voters enrolled as Democrats. The Suffolk Democratic leadership is confident that when these absentee ballots are counted, it will reverse the losing Democratic margins in many races. The Suffolk GOP leadership believes otherwise. Also, in a clear-cut outcome, a majority of Suffolk voters said no to a ballot proposition that would have extended the terms of the 18 Suffolk County legislators from two to four years. A resolution passed by the legislature that facilitated the ballot proposition declared that the twoyear term “impedes a legislator’s ability to adequately represent his or her constituents, especially when campaigning for re-election requires several months out of his or her second year in office.” And in Riverhead Town, a proposal to extend the town supervisor’s term from two to four years also was voted down.

It would seem to me that one of the most frightening circumstances to be caught in is a boat afire. It is loaded with high-octane fuel creating toxic smoke; using water to fight the fire can sink the boat; leaving the boat may entail going into another hostile environment – cold and unforgiving water. It doesn’t sound like there are many, if any, good alternatives. Also, fire prevention professionals quote that on average a fire will double in area every 5 minutes. At that rate, it wouldn’t take long to engulf an entire boat. So, time is of the essence and it is highly unlikely that anyone can get to you in time to assist in the fire suppression. You and your crew, most likely, are it.
Causes of Fires
According to many studies such as those conducted by entities such as BOAT/US, surprisingly, the engine is not the most likely source of fires on boats – electricity is. More than half of boat fires (55%) start with wiring or appliance failures. Next come fires started by an overheated engine but they are less than half as likely (24%). Less than 10% of boat fires (8%) start with a fuel leak. Of course, those can reach catastrophic proportions if the fire ignites the fuel tank itself. The rest is a mixed bag of “miscellaneous” – dropped match,
stove spills, flare “slag” landing on the boat, etc. An electrical fire such as the one that starts from a frayed/chafed wire is very different than one which is fed by a malfunctioning inverter or generator. The first is going to act like someone was smoking in bed – material is aflame but not being fed by the electricity itself. But it counts as the cause of the fire.
Types of Fire Extinguishers and Who Needs What
First, fire extinguishers themselves are classified into “A”, “B” and “C” types. (There is a type “D” for chemical/combustible metals fires such as would be created by the magnesium in a flare but I have never seen it successfully used before the flare involved surrounding materials – get the flare off the boat [let the fish below deal with it] and then deal with the fire.) The easiest way to remember what they are used for is thus: 1. “A” – the fire creates ash – paper, bedding, clothes, wood, etc… 2. “B” – the subject afire can boil – “POLs” or petroleum, oils and lubricants… 3. “C” – a charge runs through it – electronic equipment…

They also come in sizes (pounds of suppressant). For the private boater, size 1 (I) or 2 (II) are the most common and manageable. The question is really, “How many do I need for my size boat?” And the answers are: • All power boats, except outboards, less than 26 feet and of open construction must carry one B-I, U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguisher. • All power boats 26 feet to less than 40 feet must carry two B-I or one B-II U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. • 40 feet to less than 65 feet must carry three B-I or one B-II and 1 B-I U. S. Coast Guard approved fire extinguishers. • Larger vessels must adhere to Federal regulations about automatic fire-suppression systems in enclosed spaces. Well, what are the suppressants and what is best for my boat might be the next set of logical questions. As would seem obvious to even the casual reader, carbon dioxide (CO2) is one suppressant. It smothers the fire by withholding oxygen from the “fuel-oxygen-heat” equation. CO2 has one not-so-obvious draw back. If you use it on a type-B fire, the high pressure of the CO2 coming out of the canister may very well spread the fire. So, hold CO2 aside. Another suppressant type
is “dry chemical.” It can handle “A”, “B” and type-“C” fires but it also has a problem. The chemical suppressant tends to be corrosive in a marine environment. Yikes… So hold that dry chemical aside too. What tends to be best, at least for “A” and “B” fires, is foam. It smothers the fire like a blanket. The foam is water-based so the use of it on an electrical fire (“C”) can be problematic as it may give a medium for the electricity to reach the salver – you! Of course, in a private boat such as found in our area, a foam extinguisher will work just fine for your chart plotter that shorted out.
fight its way upwind easily. And have the helmsman call the USCG on VHF-16. Get the “rescue starts now” clock going. While reaching for the fire extinguishers, yell – “everybody into life-jackets!” If you do have to abandon ship, you are prepared. Aim the fire extinguisher at the base of the flame, not the flames themselves. You are seeking to smother the source of the fire, not the flames per se. Move the fire extinguisher back and forth across the source of the flame to spread the coverage. If the fire has a source such a flowing charge or liquid, and you can get to a shut-off valve, shut it off and starve the fire.
Where Do I Keep The Extinguishers?
And be sure to call the US Coast Guard – ASAP. Get the rescuestarts-now clock started as soon as possible. They won’t get there in time to stop the fire – but they will task someone or something to get there in time to fish you out of the water if you have to abandon ship. Be sure to let the USCG know how many people are aboard – they will look for that many people in the water. No one gets left behind.
Where I can get to them – plus the sleeping berths. If you awake to a fire, you may have to fight your way out of it. Every other extinguisher should be kept in a convenient place – near the galley but not in it, near the engine but not within the engine space, etc. Use common sense.

Act quickly. If you have help aboard, use it. Have someone turn the boat so the fire is down wind and proceed ahead as slowly as possible to maintain steerage. This will buy you time as the fire can’t

FROM A TO Z BY ROBERT CHARTUK Launching off the rocks near the Montauk lighthouse, Jared was the first one out and we watched as the ocean let him in unscathed. Creighton was to my left and a fellow long boarder was to my right and we waited as the next set rolled through. When it looked like the coast was clear, the long boarder darted out and was immediately swept past us. Creighton followed, so I figured I’d wait to see how they fared. About a quarter of the way out, they both got nailed by incoming whitewater and I lost sight of them. When the set passed, it looked like a lull for me and I went for it. The easternmost point of Long Island is strewn with boulders and gravel and as the waves roll up and back, the stones make a grinding noise that’s pretty spooky when you’re right in with them. I stroked as fast as I could, but the swells from Hurricane Teddy didn’t cut me any slack. A big one broke outside and met me with a large wall of white. I tried to punch under, but it swept me off
my board like an ant. I regrouped and made another attempt, only to suffer the same result. For the next wall, I tried a different maneuver: instead of trying to punch under, I jettisoned my board and submerged feet first. I felt a huge tug from the leash and I let my leg go in that direction to give it as much slack as possible. The wave still rolled me, but at least I was able to hold some ground for the next one. I reeled in the board and was able to paddle a little before the fourth one got me, as did the fifth, though each time I got out a little further. After the sixth one, Teddy cut me some slack and I made it to clear water. It is at this point, after getting drilled a few times, you need to dig deep and keep paddling even though you’re out of breath and your arms feel like noodles. My adrenaline fired back up when I saw a large set approaching—the big bombs we saw from the cliffs— and I wind-milled toward the first wall. I felt like I was going in slow motion as a large shelf of gray-blue reared up in front of me. Dig, dig,

was steep and I was serenaded by a torrential shower as the wind blew a cascade of spray off the back of the wave. Big surf comes in sets and I was immediately confronted by the next one: larger and ornerier than
the first. Here, you have a decision to make: try to paddle over the top of the thing or bail out and take your chances. I bailed on one a lot smaller during the Hurricane Humberto swell and broke my precious Takayama, so this time I wasn’t going to abandon my board. I had just enough forward motion to propel myself through as the lip loomed over me. Made it, and to my relief I had covered enough distance to get over the next few with a little less drama. Now I’m out here with these monstrous sets rolling through and watching as the shortboarders were hucking themselves over these huge ledges. Jared was fearless, especially considering he was holding a GoPro camera in his mouth and told me later that it’s hard to take in a deep breath when you really need it while clamping down on the rubber bit. If he’s successful, you’ll see him reappear down the line or, if
he eats it, he’ll be scratching around in the soup where the thing just detonated. My new friend went for one and ended up down the line and paddled back out stoked. I was sitting a little deep from the pack and watched as at least threequarters of the guys who went end up in the soup. A little to the west in front of the radar tower at Camp Hero, the waves looked like they weren’t as gnarly, so I headed over there. There was only one guy out and he seemed happy that I joined him. If something goes wrong out here, you just hope there’s someone nearby who can drag you in. He dropped in on a right-hand beast across my grill and it was stupendous. The wave pitched out in a huge tube and he skirted just ahead of it. Waves like that are loud and the roar is impressive as they race by. I was now out there by myself, the nearest guys more than 100 yards away, and I pondered my situation. I didn’t come all this way to chicken out, so I had to make my move. To be continued…

History Gives Us Hope for The Future By Barbara Guarino Kruk
In this, the last article on death, dying and surviving COVID-19, I will share some of the most remarkable pieces of information I have discovered. While we are not any closer to full recovery, and the death toll continues to climb, looking back over history illustrates that we are not alone in our current struggles with the dreaded virus. The world has suffered from the insidious effects of plagues since earliest recorded history and while we are currently enduring the pain and suffering of our own pandemic there is much to learn from our historical predecessors. In an article published in The Conversation, a non-profit news site dedicated to sharing ideas from academic experts, I was surprised to learn so many interesting facts which I would like to share with all of you. As early as 165 AD a devastating plague, the Antonine Plague, which historians believe may have been small pox, swept across the Roman Empire. Thousands were infected and many
more died. At that time the religious belief was to worship multiple gods in a paganist society. The early Christians who worshipped only one God were charged with caring for the sick and dying. When people saw that they were not as affected by the plague the survivors came to believe it was because of their favor with their God. Within a single generation the Roman Empire began to convert to Christianity, thus evolving into a monotheistic Christian based society. Around the year 500 A.D. another devastating plague ploughed through Europe taking with it nearly eighty percent of the then population. Those most affected were the slaves who were used not only for farming but for military protection. With this depletion of manpower to protect their boundaries they fell prey to the Islamic Caliphate of Arabia. Upon recovery from the loss of population the need for laborers created a new class of labor; the “free laborer”.
Under this system which has become known as the Feudal System, these laborers were given a small plot of land in exchange for goods and services to their landlord. The nefarious Black Death of the 1300’s AD, nearly decimated Europe with an estimated death toll of fifty percent of the population. It
was the catalyst for two historically revolutionary concepts. Because the cities in Europe were over crowded with poor sanitation, they became the perfect breeding grounds for the plague. The wealthy seeing the widespread infection left the cities and retired to their country retreats where the air

The shortage of labor gave peasants more power. Innovations in farming such as the iron plow rendered more produce. Many of these farmers then migrated to cities and because of such inventions as the printing press, gunpowder and water pumps life became easier. This era saw the birth of the Middle Class. With more leisure time for this new class of people came the desire for the arts and other intellectual creativity; the foundation for what was one of the most influential movements in the world; the Renaissance was born. It was during this time that some of the greatest thinkers the world has ever known were gathering to share their ideas, philosophies, and social reconstruction.
The ideas put forward laid the groundwork for the move from a monarchial way of government to a multi-party, more democratic form of ruling. The United States has not been a stranger to plagues, starting back as early as The Spanish Influenza and as recently as the Swine Flu and other deadly viruses. It is difficult during these days of constant bombardment from every news source and media outlet around the world to believe there is light at the end of what appears to be a long and deadly road, but history teaches us that there is hope. We will survive and someday, maybe not in our lifetime, others will look back at the COVID-19 Pandemic and learn how we not only survived but made far reaching strides in medicine, science, and society. We must not lose faith and hope that this will pass and we will become stronger. It is my prayer that you all stay safe and healthy and we can dream of a brighter future in a world filled with acceptance of each other’s differences, skin color, political and social ideologies.
