Angelillo: Cut back on processed foods and replace with nutrient-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Focus on incorporating 1 - 2 small changes per week. SSP: What is the benefit of focusing on long term goals? Angelillo: Quick fix solutions tend to promote dramatic changes that are often not sustainable. They could actually cause health issues as well. Create a plan for yourself, write down your longterm goals and breakdown what your short-term goals will be.
SSP: Why are long-term goals important?
SSP: What encouraging words would you offer to stick with it?
D’Angelo: It promotes sustainable results, encourages healthy habits, fosters a positive mindset, improves overall health, and provides long-lasting motivation. It allows for gradual and lasting changes that can be maintained for a lifetime.
Angelillo: Remember your “why?” What was the reason they wanted to make lifestyle changes in the first place? Ask yourself “where do you see yourself in five years if you don’t make lifestyle changes?”

Martin and American Lung Association Community Engagement Specialist Paulette Orlando: SSP: What is the best advice for folks who are trying to quit smoking? Orlando: It’s normal to take multiple attempts to quit to be
successful. Continue the process. Don’t give up. A small slip doesn’t mean you fail for good. Build a support system to help you quit. SSP: Why is it important to set long-term goals rather than "quick fixes?" Martin: Nicotine addiction does not happen overnight. Defeating it takes time and effort. Addiction is multifactorial, and has physical, psychological and social components. Each of these must be addressed to successfully quit smoking. It is very important to have a plan, not just for how and when to quit, but also for how to handle nicotine cravings in stressful or difficult situations. SSP: If folks are ready to give up
already, what encouraging words would you offer to stick with it? Martin: Quitting smoking is the single most important thing a person can do for their health. It can add years to your life, and substantially increase your quality of life. It is important to remember that even though quitting is hard, many people have done it successfully, and help is always available. Orlando: Avoid triggers that compel you to smoke. If you wake up and smoke with coffee, your coffee could be a trigger. Changing behaviors will help. Track and manage your triggers. There’s also FDA approved cessation medications. Vaping is not FDA approved.
Islip Supervisor Launches Final Term By Barbara LaMonica Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter launched her third and final four-year term last Thursday during her inaugural and Swearing In Ceremony before a standing room only auditorium filled with dignitaries and supporters at Touro Law School. Also taking oaths were Councilmen John Lorenzo and Michael McElwee, Town Clerk Linda Vavricka and Receiver of Taxes Andy Wittman. Among those attesting to Supervisor Carpenter's lengthy record of accomplishments were Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine, United States Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, and United States Congressman Andrew Garbarino. New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli served as Master of Ceremonies. Numerous dignitaries and elected officials attended the ceremony including but not limited to Suffolk County Republican Leader Jesse Garcia, Suffolk County Democratic Leader Rich Schaefer, and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico.

He studied political science and history at Stony Brook and went on to get his law degree,” Romaine recounted in front of an audience of about 400 well-wishers. “He had boundless curiosity and a burning desire for public service. I can’t think of anyone more qualified to hold this position.”

town supervisor during a town hall ceremony made all the more poignant by the appearance of Suffolk County Executive Edward Romaine, Panico’s mentor who
Panico said streamlining services for town residents is among his top priorities, particularly in the area of land use. To strengthen the local economy and provide affordable housing, he promised to shave a year off the process for development approvals. To make it easier to derive income and allow people to keep their homes, he said he would abolish the accessory apartment review board and grant permits through a more streamlined administrative process. The new supervisor focused a great deal of attention in his remarks on North Bellport and Brookhaven’s other less affluent areas, noting local support for affordable multifamily housing projects. Panico spoke of his childhood going to Smith Point Park with his family and said he finds it “abhorrent” that children in North Bellport don’t have a way to get to the beach.

Panico showed his jovial side when he referenced the new year’s “three greatest mysteries:” Where the federal government is going to spend the $1 trillion infrastructure money, where the state will spend its $4.2 billion environmental bond fund, and “where is Steve Bellone going to work next,” he said, referring to Romaine’s predecessor in Hauppauge. The town’s new chief executive rapped Gov. Kathy Hochul for her attempts to usurp local authority in building multi-family housing and for lumping local elections in with state and federal voting.
“This is the mentality that is tearing apart this state. The governor did a great disservice to us all by going against the needs and wants of our residents. She should have stood up and said no,” Panico said. “One thing you can be sure of,” Romaine told the crowd, “You’ll have a county executive rooting for your new supervisor every step of the way.” Sworn in for four-year terms along with Panico were town Highway Superintendent Daniel Losquadro, Receiver of Taxes Louis Marcoccia, and town council members, Jonathan Kornreich, Jane Bonner, Neil Manzella, Michael Loguercio, Neil Foley, and Karen Dunne Kesnig.
Holtsville Hal’s Famous Prediction to be Revealed on Groundhog Day Six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Hundreds will gather at the Holtsville Ecology Site on Friday, Feb. 2, to hear Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro announce Holtsville Hal’s famous forecast. According to tradition, if a groundhog sees its shadow after stirring from hibernation on Groundhog Day, there will be six more weeks of winter weather; if not, spring should arrive early. Superintendent Losquadro will reveal Hal’s forecast at approximately 7:25 a.m. “Our annual Groundhog Day celebration is an enjoyable tradition for many local families,” Superintendent Losquadro said. “I’m always hopeful Hal will predict an early spring to help my snow removal budget, but either way this is a much-anticipated event each year in Brookhaven Town.” Although he’s sure to be the

By Robert Chartuk The seaside attributes of our area attracted the well-to-do long before the Mastics became a suburban community, with one family in particular, the Knapps, building a stately mansion and maintaining a sprawling estate that would be the envy of even the rich and famous of today. Of anywhere in the world, Joseph Palmer Knapp chose the Moriches Bay waterfront for his country home. He was a publisher and philanthropist and became quite prominent after inventing a multicolor, 6-cylinder press. He founded the American Lithograph Company in 1891 and published the Associated Sunday Magazine, along with other popular periodicals of his day, including "Farm and Fireside" and
"Woman's Home Companion." He also published the New York Herald Tribune, and his magazine, "Every Week,” went out to more than a half million people. Known as J.P., Knapp distributed his “This Week” publication to 42 newspapers and reached 14.6 million readers. It was J.P.’s son, Joseph Fairchild Knapp, who derived the most enjoyment from the area’s marine environment. "Dodi" was an avid outdoorsman and licensed pilot who tore across the local waters in speedboats. He served as a Naval flier in the Aerial Coast Patrol, Unit 3, patrolling the Long Island coast from 1917-1919 in search of German U-Boats. The unit was based at the Knapp Estate along Moriches Bay, near where the Smith Point Bridge would be constructed years later.
The kids dribbling basketballs and shooting hoops at Clayton Huey Elementary School over the weekend stopped for a moment to join the adults in announcing a $2,500 grant for the Moriches Youth Organization. The Suffolk Youth Sports Grant was delivered by county Legislator Jim Mazzarella and will help keep the MYO programs rolling, as well as promote school bus safety. Started by Tony Parlotto 50 years ago, the MYO has been an integral part of the community, schooling kids in basketball, soccer, lacrosse, and other sports. Coaching at the Saturday morning clinic was William Floyd School Board Member Kevin Meyer and Cookie Lettieri, a Center Moriches athlete who’s been volunteering with the organization since its beginning.

Cloud Lifted From Former Suffolk Police Commissioner By Robert Chartuk
Former county Police Commissioner Rodney K. Harrison can exit Suffolk with a clean slate as the district attorney reports “no further action required” on allegations that the top cop padded his final payout by falsifying time sheets. As previously reported in the South Shore Press, Harrison was called into question by Suffolk Legislator Robert Trotta, a former county detective and frequent police critic, for changing leave days to sick days, which would have given him more money as he separated from the public service. Trotta pressed District Attorney Raymond Tierney to open an investigation. “After receiving these inquiries, we consulted with department heads from all applicable agencies, including the SCPD, and concluded that no further action was required,” Tierney said in a statement, noting, “Any investigation into these matters was not specific to any one individual or any one county department.” According to Tierney, his office frequently receives tips regarding time sheets at the
end of the year pertaining to various county departments. “The district attorney’s office takes these inquiries seriously and endeavors to work with all county departments to ensure that all wage hours are properly documented and accounted for. This year was no different than past years.” Harrison did not dispute changing his time sheets, arguing that it is done routinely by department personnel. After consulting with the county attorney, however, he said he changed his back to the way they were originally submitted. The commissioner served two years with Suffolk after a long career with the New York City Police Department. He was onboard when the Gilgo Beach murder investigation produced a suspect and has been involved in implementing the department’s 1,000-page reform plan, which called for the outfitting of police officers with body cameras. He earned $220,000 annually as commissioner. County Comptroller John Kennedy said Harrison’s final payout has not yet been calculated by his office. The additional monies he would have received by altering his time sheets would
have been about $10,000, county officials previously reported. “We have nothing against the former commissioner getting what is owed to him,” Kennedy said. Trotta has a history of tangling with his former department and the PBA. He was taken off the legislature’s public safety committee after he threatened to play a recording of a conversation he had with Harrison. “The DA used his discretion and decided not to arrest the outgoing police commissioner,” Trotta said. “That doesn't change the facts.” "We're glad Commissioner Harrison has been vindicated,” said Police Benevolent Association President Lou Civello. “This appears to have been another cheap political stunt by Legislator Trotta. Anything he alleges should be met with skepticism considering his history of false and fraudulent accusations." Suffolk’s new county executive, Edward Romaine, who took office January 1, has made replacing Harrison a top priority. When he submitted his resignation just prior to the November election, Harrison said he wanted the new county executive to choose his own commissioner.
Ronkonkoma House Fire
By Chase Millwater On Monday January 1st, 2024 at approximately 17:42hrs the Ronkonkoma Fire Department was activated for a structure fire at 10 Magnolia Avenue, in Lake Grove. Arriving units were met with smoke showing from the home. The alarm was then reactivated as a working fire. It was discovered to be a kitchen fire. The fire was quickly knocked down. Searches revealed
a dog in the home, the dog did not survive the blaze. There were no reported injuries. The alarm was shortly placed under control. Mutual aid was provided by the Lakeland, Holbrook, Nesconset, Centereach, Holtsville, Farmingville, and Stony Brook Fire Departments. The cause of the fire was under investigation by the Lake Grove Fire Marshal and Suffolk County Police Arson Squad. The fire was deemed accidental.

By Robert Chartuk Suffolk Sheriff Errol Toulon kept the holiday spirit alive with the giveaway of toys and pajamas to hundreds of families as part of his office’s START program. The Sheriff partnered with Toys for Tots, EJ’s PJs, Keith Caputo’s Helping Makes U Happy, Starbucks, and the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers in putting a smile on the faces of dozens of children. Helping out at the giveaway was Patricia Poggie of EJ’s PJ’s, who’s been distributing pajamas to needy kids for the last 13 years. Starting at her Centereach home, where she gave away 34 pairs the first year, Poggie and her family, Edward, Jeremy, and

and his mom, Cassie, who host various fundraisers and community service projects every year, events that “involve community participation as we strive to be family-friendly and provide positive volunteering experiences for anyone who wants to participate,” Keith said. The Sheriff's Transition and Reentry Team (S.T.A.R.T.) opened its doors in 2020 with the goal of facilitating the successful reentry of justice-involved individuals with the hope of reducing recidivism. “Needs such as substance abuse treatment, education, job assistance, DSS assistance, identification issues, transportation, food, housing, and clothing are all
addressed,” Toulon explained. It is important to establish a discharge plan for the individual's successful reentry into the community, he said, and provide support for them and their families. Upon discharge from jail, individuals visit the SMART Resource Center where all the needs identified by counselors are addressed by the staff and the many service providers. At this time, the warm handoff to the community begins, and lines of communication are established for follow-up care. The Resource Center continues to remain available post-incarceration for followup assistance in the hopes of continued success, according to the Sheriff.
Romaine Makes Key Appointments By Robert Chartuk For the first time in 12 years, there’s a new team in the county executive suite as Edward Romaine fills in key parts of his administration. At Romaine’s right hand will be Chief Deputy County Executive Kevin Molloy, who served as his chief of staff when he was Brookhaven Supervisor. Molloy, a former newspaperman who has extensive governmental experience, is the treasurer of the Brookhaven Republican Committee. “A piece of advice l took to heart from Rob Astorino, the former Westchester county executive, was to surround yourself with people you know and trust and who are up to the job,” Romaine said of his staff choices. For his commissioner of Public Works, Romaine is relying on experience in choosing Charles Bartha, who has held the position in previous administrations. Darnell Tyson will be his

chief deputy. Romaine’s sticking with the current Parks commissioner, Jason Smagin, an appointment of his predecessor, Steve Bellone, who was prohibited from running for reelection under the county’s term limit law. Another Bellone appointment who’s staying on is Sarah Lansdale, who will serve as commissioner of Economic Development and Planning. Romaine has announced
a number of deputies, including Chief Deputy Michael Monahan, Christina Capobianco for Finance, Dr. Sylvia Diaz for Health, Human Services and Education, and Jennifer Jeungst, the county’s "sewer czar.” Bellone’s deputy in the sewer role, Peter Scully, announced his retirement prior to Romaine taking office. Vanessa BairdStreeter, a former deputy county executive, was recently announced as president of
the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island. She succeeds Rebecca Sanin, who was elected to the Suffolk Legislature in November. According to Romaine’s new communications director, Michael Martino, who previously served in that role for the county legislature, the office is still considering candidates for police commissioner and deputy county executive for Public Safety. Other roles yet to be announced are county attorney and high-level staffers in that office, as well as Consumer Affairs, Labor, Office for the Aging, Central Procurement, Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services, Probation, and Human Resources, Personnel, and Civil Service. Romaine has the ability to replace non-civil service personnel and said he will review some of the moves made by Bellone in switching members of his appointed staff to protected civil service positions.

By Robert Chartuk The political dynamics between Long Island and the rest of the state–Republican vs. Democrat, county executive vs. governor– played out in a squabble during the Long Island Association’s annual State of the Region breakfast. A heated exchange between Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman and Gov. Kathy Hochul Friday focused attention on the governor’s ability to control billions of state and federal dollars that could flow–or not–to Long Island municipalities. Addressing 1,100 of the region’s top government and business leaders, Blakeman accused Hochul of being hostile to the suburbs and told her to “Stay out of Long Island.” The Republican rapped Hochul for changing voting laws in a move seen as favoring her fellow Democrats and noted, “Nassau and Suffolk counties send billions of dollars to Albany, to Washington, and we get very little in return other than aggravation.” The Nassau executive, considered a potential challenger to the governor in 2026, has been part of a chorus of Long Island leaders railing against Hochul’s support of the cashless bail laws they say initiated a statewide crime wave and her attempts to usurp local zoning authority by locating multi-family housing in the suburbs. They’re also not happy about the fiscal repercussions of the governor’s sanctuary state policies that have brought more than 130,000 illegal

But I will not compromise on my belief that unless we are willing to build more housing in the right places, our prosperity will be held back because we'll lose the talent that wants to live here.” “They are interjecting themselves in our local elections by changing the local elections from odd years to even years,” Blakeman said during his remarks. “Now why are they doing that? It’s a cynical, political play to try and elect more Democrats rather than talk about issues that are local in nature that won’t get drowned out in the gubernatorial or presidential election with national and state issues.” At stake is the region’s share of the $1 trillion federal infrastructure fund and the state’s $4.2 billion

Romaine is working with the Suffolk Legislature to craft a Home Rule Message that the state legislature–and Hochul–will need to approve to present county voters with a referendum on creating a countywide sewer district and increase Suffolk’s sales tax an eighth of a percent to fund new sewers and private cesspool upgrades. A previous measure without a Home Rule Message, engineered by Romaine’s predecessor, Steve Bellone, was rejected by the county lawmakers. “I understand how important the environment is, clean water, clean beaches and what's coming out of our faucets,” Hochul, a long-time Buffalo resident, said, promising to bring the resources “we need here to ensure that this remains pristine as it always should be.” Blakeman will be looking to the governor to approve a state gaming license for a Las Vegas Sands application to build a $5 billion hotel, casino, and entertainment complex at the long-dormant property surrounding the Nassau Coliseum. “I cannot see the state not approving our license because if it's decided on the merits, we will have the best application in the state,” he said.
Rainy or Sunny in Maine? A Ballot Storm is Brewing Op-ed by Stefan Mychajliw There are 294,501 Republican voters in Maine. One woman, an unelected bureaucrat, created a constitutional crisis by trying to stop them from casting a ballot for Donald J. Trump. Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows unilaterally decided that President Trump engaged in an insurrection on January 6th, and must be blocked from the ballot due to the 14th amendment. The spirit of the 14th amendment was to prevent Confederate officers from serving in federal office following the Civil War. Bellows claimed a fair process took place to remove Trump. “There was in fact a hearing, under the administrative procedure act of Maine,” Bellows told News Nation. Was it fair? Is she a biased, hyper partisan hack looking to score political points? Fifty years ago two Texas reporters, Sam Kinch and S tuart Long, wrote a book about politics in the Lone Star state and inspired these words of wisdom on the importance of journalists holding government officials accountable: “If one person says it is raining
and another person says it is not raining then a journalist should not simply quote them both. Instead, a journalist should look outside to ascertain the truth and relay it to the public.” With this in mind the South Shore Press decided to take a deeper dive into Bellows and her process of removing Trump from the Maine ballot. Concerning her “hearing” it consisted of showing YouTube videos, sharing news stories, and speaking to one law professor. This process was blasted by left leaning CNN. “Were these hearings fair? Did they comply with due process? If you look at the hearing, they heard from one law professor and based the ruling on YouTube clips and news reports, things that would never pass the bar in normal court,” said CNN Senior Legal Analyst Elie Honig. It appears as though national media did not engage in a deep dive into old speeches from Bellows to determine whether or not she blasted President Trump in the past. The South Shore Press did. In a speech at Maine’s Lincoln County Democratic Meeting “Defending Our Democracy” forum featuring Bellows, she hammered President Trump and January 6th protestors.
“Never before in American history had an American president refused to accept the peaceful transfer of power, and denied the results, and attempted to thwart the will of people in our democracy. And never before January 6th, had Americans stormed the United States Capitol to try to thwart the will of the people, to overturn the election results, and upend our democracy,” bellowed Bellows. At a League of Women Voters Maine convention in May of 2021, Bellows again expressed outrage at what transpired on January 6th. “All of us experienced grief and consternation in 2020 at the unprecedented assault on institutions and the rule of law,” said Bellows during the virtual conference. Does this sound like someone who can make an unbiased decision on President Trump? But wait, there’s more.

“After January 6th we saw in Arizona, ‘Cyber Ninja,’ a shadowy, partisan, Trump affiliated organization came in, it was a grift operation, it was a ‘fraudit.’ It was an alleged post election audit,” said Bellows, who boasted that in her home state of Maine taxpayers do not have to show ID to vote.
Bellows was highly critical of the 45th President and his efforts to audit election results in Arizona, something that most definitely could not be construed as engaging in an insurrection.

$100 Billion High-Speed Rail Fiasco the announcement of $8.2 billion for nine other passenger rail projects across the country, including $3 billion for Brightline West, a 218mile high-speed line from Las Vegas to suburban Los Angeles, and monies for rail corridors in Virginia, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. By Robert Chartuk Motorists driving on crummy roads and suffering lousy train service need only look to California to see where the nation’s transportation dollars are being spent. President Biden recently granted $3.1 billion for the “Bullet Train” that is supposed to link San Francisco and Los Angeles. State voters approved it back in 2008 when it was estimated to cost $33 billion. More than 15 years later, the rail line remains unfinished with $100 billion sunk into it so far. In 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced that the high-speed line, which boasted of 220-mileper-hour trains that could whisk passengers between the state’s two major cities in under three hours, had to be significantly scaled back due to construction complications and cost overruns. A clearer picture of the fiasco emerged from the California High-Speed Rail Peer Review Committee, which said the rail would take another 15 to 20 years to build, would cost three times as much as projected, and would be unable to achieve its speedy trip times. Outside of the $3.1 billion

committed by Biden, the committee concluded that “there is no existing federal program anywhere near the scale or sustaining level needed.” The President does have the $1 trillion federal Infrastructure Bill to draw from, but competition for these dollars are intense, and the California project is not expected to receive the $100 billion it needs from Washington. According to a recent review by Wendell Cox, a senior fellow with the Committee to Unleash Prosperity, even further cost escalations are likely considering massive tunneling that has yet to be done through the Tehachapi Mountains. Meanwhile, Cox noted, “Florida has a new rail system up and running between Orlando and Miami, with all private financing. Florida also has a state budget surplus.” Biden is restoring funding for the California project after thenPresident Trump pulled the plug on it saying it was a "disaster." Budget hawks in Congress are looking to bar the White House from giving away any more tax dollars to the rail line. Last month, Biden doubled down on train transportation with

This is Hochul’s second State of the State as an elected Governor. Here are some of her proposals that will impact Suffolk County families.

Expectant mothers will be eligible to receive 40-hours of paid leave to attend prenatal doctor appointments. Families will also be able to receive care from a doula without a referral from a doctor.

The state will spend $10 million of tax dollars to train 20,000 teachers on the science of reading. Hochul’s “Back to Basics” proposal also requires the Department of Education to add teaching phonemic awareness,

There’s numerous planks within this consumer protection proposal from Hochul. So called “buy now, pay later” predatory lenders will have to register as a business in New York State, and more severe penalties will be in place for those that rip off Suffolk County families. There will also be an increase in the maximum benefit for paid medical and disability leave, eliminate insulin copays for $1.6 million New Yorkers, and limit hospitals from suing low-income patients over medical debt.

According to Hochul, drowning is the leading cause of death for kids between the ages of one and four. The Governor
wants to spend more tax dollars on new swimming pools in urban areas, as well as strengthen access to rivers and lakes across the Empire State.

A $400 million pilot program of private and public funds will create the Empire AI Consortium. This new computing center will be located in Upstate New York. By Robert Chartuk The latest stunt pulled by pranksters looking to disrupt society is swatting, calling in fake active shooter complaints, and causing the police to show up in force. The list of prominent swatting victims is growing with elected officials, controversial figures, and even public places such as churches, airports, schools, and businesses being targeted. According to a public alert from the FBI, "The individuals who engage in this activity use
technology, such as caller ID spoofing, social engineering, TTY, and prank calls to make it appear that the emergency call is coming from the victim's phone. Traditionally, law enforcement has seen swatters directing their actions toward individuals and residences. Increasingly, the FBI sees swatters targeting public places such as airports, schools, and businesses. Another recent trend is so-called celebrity swatting, where the targeted victims are well-known personalities,” the federal bureau said. A recent swatting attack involved Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, an outspoken Republican from Georgia who reported she was targeted over the holidays. "I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time, on Christmas with my family here," she posted on her Facebook page. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also had the cops show up at his house, as did Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Upstate New York Congressman Brandon Williams, and Republican Sen. Rick Scott of
Florida. "Last night, while at dinner with my wife, cowards swatted my home in Naples,” Scott said. “These criminals wasted the time and resources of our law enforcement in a sick attempt to terrorize my family.” Billionaire George Soros was also the subject of a swatting incident, though he was not home when police responded to his Hamptons estate. According to the Secure Community Network, a safety and security organization based in Chicago, there were more than 449 swatting incidents and bomb threats against the Jewish community in 2023, up 541% from 2022, as compared to a total of 23 between 2019-2021. In a 24hour period in mid-December, the network reported 199 swats and false bomb threats across the country targeting Jewish facilities, including 93 in California, 62 in Arizona, 15 in Connecticut, five in Colorado, and four in Washington state, among others. The group said an uptick in incidents came in the wake of the October Hamas
terrorist attacks against Israel and the rise of antisemitic activity across North America.

Sanctuary City Mayors Call for Billions as Migrant Influx Breaks Records By Raheem Soto Democrat Mayors Chicago's Brandon Johnson, New York City's Eric Adams, and Denver's Mayor Mike Johnston are now renewing calls for federal assistance to address the escalating migrant crisis. The trio of mayors conducted a virtual press conference last week to draw attention to their plea for more tax-payer money, emphasizing the pressing need for resources to manage the surge in illegal migrant numbers that has strained city resources. While seeking additional funds to address the surge, the mayors' request has not been without criticism. Critics argue that allocating more money to sanctuary cities might exacerbate the situation rather than alleviate it. Skepticism surrounds the effectiveness of pouring additional funds into cities grappling with the challenges of migrant accommodation. New York City, receiving over 161,000 migrants since 2022, anticipates the crisis to cost an estimated $12 billion over three years, according to Mayor Eric Adams. Similarly, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston expressed concerns that the crisis could consume 10 percent of the city's budget.

The decision, set to take effect on January 1st, has spotlighted high-profile figures and ignited speculation about the potential fallout for those implicated in Epstein's web of associates. The civil lawsuit, initially filed by Virginia Giuffre against Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's close associate, alleges Maxwell's central role in facilitating Epstein's sexual exploitation and abuse of multiple teenage girls over ten years. Taiwan Election Escalates War Worries
By Robert Chartuk China has ramped up its show of military force in the waters off Taiwan ahead of the country’s presidential elections next week, a contest that pits the current vice president against a challenger who has affirmed his support of China taking over its island neighbor. China’s saberrattling has the industrial world on edge, concerned about dictator Xi Jinping taking control of the globe’s largest producer of computer chips. Xi considers Taiwan a province of China and told President Biden as much when the two world leaders met in November. He’s announced that his armed forces will be ready for a full-scale invasion by 2027 and declared during a New Year’s Eve address that Taiwan will “surely be reunified.” President Tsai Ing-wen has her nation on a war footing with an armament buildup and military exercises at Taiwan’s coastal defenses. Xi is flexing his muscles as
well directing fighter jets and warships to routinely infringe on Taiwan’s naval and air space. The leading candidate in the January 13 contest, Vice President Lai Ching-te, is opposed to the communist takeover of his country, while his chief opponent, Hou Yuih, believes that accepting Xi’s terms will avoid war. The U.S. is walking a fine line on the issue as Biden didn’t push back on Xi’s plan when they met in San Francisco, though he has expressed his support of Taiwan remaining independent. He’s c onsidered between a rock and a hard place in his relationship with Xi after his son’s company received a $1 billion investment from Red China after he flew with him to Beijing on the vice presidential plane. Biden has repeatedly denied any knowledge of his son Hunter’s dealings with China, a situation that is under investigation by the Republicans in Congress. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN If only Washington would be this way. The inauguration last week of Ed Romaine as the ninth county executive of Suffolk County was a celebration of non-partisanship in government. And it was a big salute to Romaine. “He never let partisanship get in his way,” declared U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, in a presentation effusively praising Republican Romaine. There were loads of Republican public officials, leaders and just plain GOP rank-and-filers among the hundreds of people packed into the auditorium at the Eastport South Manor Junior-Senior High School on January 1. This included the two members of the U.S. House of Representatives who represent Suffolk, Nick LaLota and Andrew Garbarino, and many state, county and town Republican officials including District Attorney Ray Tierney, and, of course, Suffolk Republican Chairman Jesse Garcia. Romaine is the first Republican Suffolk County executive in two decades. But there were also plenty of Democrats. Those in attendance besides Schumer included New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, Suffolk Democratic Chairman and Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Suffolk County Legislators Steve Englebright and Ann Welker, Suffolk Sheriff Errol Toulon, and the new Southampton town supervisor, Maria Moore.
A Celebration of Non-Partisanship and Big Salute to Ed Romaine
I’ve covered Suffolk County executives since 1962 and regularly wrote about the first person to hold that office, H. Lee Dennison, a Democrat who crusaded for governmental reform, and then his successor, John V. N. Klein, a Republican who championed environmental initiatives including the first-of-its-kind Suffolk County Farmland Preservation Program and was a leader in challenging oildrilling off Suffolk’s coast. Republican Dan Panico, who now follows Romaine as Brookhaven Town supervisor, said in his presentation at the inauguration: “Ed will be one of the best county executives this county has ever seen.” I agree with Panico having covered Romaine since 1985 after he left being a history teacher at Hauppauge High School and began putting into practice the ideals about which he taught. I’ve regularly written about his leading in numerous environmental and good-government initiatives as a long-time member of the Suffolk Legislature, innovations as county clerk, and as supervisor of Brookhaven, Suffolk’s largest town in size and population. Through many decades, he’s among the finest officials in Suffolk I have known. Panico spoke of Romaine’s “impeccable character” and his having “dedicated his life to make the lives of people better.” That view was mirrored in the

Among these, he noted, was a pioneering federal law they worked on together “to regulate helicopter traffic” triggered by the “racket” of helicopters delivering visitors from the city to the Hamptons. The inauguration began with Paige Patterson of Port Jefferson Station singing the opening lines
of the tune “Feeling Good”—"It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day….And I’m feeling good.” The master of ceremonies, former State Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, a Republican, opened with: “This is a good day.” Romaine began his “Inaugural Address” with: “It is a new day in Suffolk County.”
The county “legislature and county executive must work together,” he said. The legislature’s presiding officer, Kevin McCaffrey, a Republican, had a front-row seat. And he said he wants “to work with our [town] supervisors.”
“I have a long list of to-do’s,” he said.
“I want to start the work of building a better Suffolk County,” said Romaine.
“This administration will be rooted in the values and traditions of hard work, personal initiative and accountability, so we can build a future that is safe and more affordable, and provides hope and opportunity to our citizens,” he continued. He outlined many of the areas he will focus upon including creation of affordable housing so people “can live here,” the environment, fighting crime, solid waste, and the highway system. By Nick Cipolla The William Floyd Colonials Varsity Boys Basketball team just got a big boost to their already dominant squad earlier this season as the currently unbeaten League I juggernaut got back their starting point guard Jermaine King Jr. after he suffered a gruesome ankle injury last school year in gym class. “I’m a competitor, so I was taking it serious,” Jermaine King Jr. said to Newsday when discussing his injury he suffered in November of 2022. “I went to hit a tennis ball, and then I ended up on the ground. I looked down and my foot was looking back at me. It was in the wrong direction.” In the Colonials victory over the Sachem East Flaming Arrows this past week, King continued to make up for lost time last year on the court and made his presence felt. The junior point guard scored five points (one three-pointer) and flashed his ability as a facilitator as
he had a team high six assists in a 76-39 beatdown. “The crazy thing is he’s actually better than what he was two years ago as far as, like, mobility, quickness, strength,” Head Coach Will Slinkosky said to reporters after the game about King Jr. “It doesn’t seem like he even had an injury last year.” King Jr. has had an incredible start to his season as he is averaging 11.5 points per game and just under four assists while hitting 24 3-point field goals throughout his team’s hot start to 2023-24. Outside of King’s performance, the Colonials got a huge boost from Joey McLaurin who had a game high 24 points as he now is averaging just over 15 points a game and has been in double figures in his last four games. The Colonials also got a boost from Jauwan Smith who had another monster game in the paint and on the glass as he had 10 points
Ward Melville’s varsity basketball team needed to win this past week against Longwood to keep the school’s high standard of athletic success alive. They entered the contest under .500 and they wanted to keep pace with league rival’s like Patchogue-Medford and William Floyd as the season continues on. After a slow first quarter and a more balanced second quarter, the Patriots came out of the half on a mission as they outscored their opponents 17-4 in the third quarter. They took a double digit lead over Longwood and controlled the pace of play that led to a 60-45 road victory for Ward Melville. The story of the game for the Patriots was senior forward Devin Lynch who had a game high 19 points while adding in five rebounds and four 3-point field goals. Lynch’s offensive outburst turned out to be the difference in this contest. This was a nice surprise from the Ward Melville senior as he has been averaging nine points per contest so far. This performance was more than double of what he has been producing up to this point in the season. Outside of Lynch’s play, Luke Chitkara and Lorenzo Beaton had

massive performances as well for Ward Melville as both men were in double figures in this contest. Chitkara – a senior shooting guard – outplayed his 12.6 points per game line as he would score 15 points while hitting three 3-pointers in the win. Beaton – a 6’4” forward – was a menace inside the paint as the big man recorded a double-double as he scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. With this win, the Patriots move back up to .500 on the year
as they are now 5-5 and they sit in fourth place behind the dominant William Floyd Varsity team, Brentwood – who is 7-1 on the year – and the Patchogue-Medford Red Raiders who have gotten off to a hot start to 2023-24 as well. The Patriots will have more to prove heading deeper into the month of January as they take on fifth place Sachem East on January 9th. The Patriots then meet up with third place Pat-Med in a highly anticipated shootout between two of the better teams in Suffolk League I.

Rocky Point Junior Casmere Morrow is a walking bucket for the Rocky Point Boys Varsity Basketball team as he continued his massive breakthrough season leading his team to a 57-49 victory over Center Moriches last week.
Morrow came out and made his presence felt after an overall slow start for his team after falling into a 20-13 hole in the first quarter by cutting the deficit to 33-29 at halftime.
Morrow has quietly been having one of the best individual seasons in the county as he is averaging 19 points per game. Not many teams have been able to stop the dynamic guard at all this season as he hasn’t scored less than 11 points this season while also distributing the ball to his teammates at an elite level as well. “(He) is the most underrated player in Suffolk (County),” said head coach James Jordan when talking about Morrow’s season. “He has been leading the team all year and he has helped us win some big
A big fourth quarter saw the Eagles outscore Center Moriches by a score of 14-6 to give the Eagles an impressive come from behind win. Morrow was all over the place as he scored 22 points while adding six rebounds, four steals – which would lead to easy transition opportunities for his squad – and five assists to lead Rocky Point to victory. He would also come through in the clutch as he would hit six free throws which all came in crucial moments of the game that would help the Eagles pull away with the win. The phenomenal Junior’s teammates also came to play in this
one as Rex Baginat added 10 points and Jeremy Sanchez – who had a big time game defensively – had four points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in the win. Despite losing in a sickening way, Center Moriches saw their superstar come out and put on a show as Tristen Green was going shot for shot with Morrow as he put up 24 points on efficient shooting throughout the contest. Xavier Bryant – the All-County Football star – had a solid game for the Red Devils as he scored nine points in the contest as well. At the time of this publication, the Eagles are still in contention to win League 4 as they have a shot to hunt down Westhampton Beach and Hauppauge as they all have very similar league and overall records so far this year. Sachem North Loses a Blowout to Bay Shore
By Nick Cipolla It has been a tough year to be a Sachem North Basketball fan as the Flaming Arrows can’t seem to figure out their game at all this year as they currently sit at 2-6 and were just embarrassed at home by unbeaten Bay Shore this past week. Sachem never led and were held to just six points in the first quarter and seven points in the third quarter as they couldn’t buy a bucket against the Marauders as well with the final score being an ugly total for the Arrows as they lost 84-35. The Arrows had no answer for the big three of Bay Shore as Christian Smiley, Carter Wilson and Tashawn Bumpers all had double figure point totals and
made it look easy in the process. Smiley would lead all scorers in this one as he dropped 22 points in this contest. Wilson would add 17 points while his teammate Bumpers had 11 points in the victory where they probably would have scored more if they played deeper into the game. Sachem had a hard time getting open looks while also not having a single player even get close to double-figure points. They were unfortunately outmatched and had little to no chance of making this a game at any point in time. In the defense of Sachem North, Bay Shore is currently unbeaten in Suffolk League 2 and they look like one of the favorites to cut down the nets at the end of
the year as they look like a legit threat on the Statewide Level. They have been beating down on both bad and good teams this year and it was a tough ask to get a win against the well-rounded juggernaut. Jack Chimenti led the Arrows with six points while no one else scored more than five in the game for the Varsity Team. Unfortunately for Sachem, the schedule won’t get any easier and it may become a disastrous final stretch as they were unable to beat Connetquot over the weekend and the upcoming games against Northport, Lindenhurst, and Copiague this upcoming week doesn’t offer up any hope of a win anytime soon. USA Boxing Allowing Biological Men to Fight Biological Women in New Rule Change By Nick Cipolla With the sport of boxing on the decline, USA Boxing has appeared to make a decision that will drive the fans away even more than the recent emergence of celebrity boxing. Last week, USA Boxing – which is the governing body of the sport in the United States – announced a new transgender policy that allows biological men to compete against biological women. Since the announcement occurred, the governing body of the once super popular sport has been slammed by fans and outsiders alike for its “pathetic and disgusting” decision. According to the new rules and a report by the New York Post, the new policy – which will be included in the 2024 rule book – states that male boxers who transition to and/or identify as a female can compete in the female category. Multiple sources including the Post have reported that USA Boxing will be allowing this while regularly testing the “Female” athletes testosterone levels in order to make sure the playing field is “level”. In order for the biological men to compete in the women's division, they must have under five nanomoles per liter of testosterone in their system for three years prior to their first competition in the “female” category, and their total testosterone levels must be below five nmol/L throughout their period of eligibility. Those competing as men, meanwhile, must show levels about 10 nmol/L for the same period.
The new rules also state that this will only affect those who are 18 and older as those in the under 18 division of boxing will still be forced to participate in the gender group that you were biologically born into. Many Republican representatives and other important figures within the party made comments about the recent ruling by USA Boxing. “USA Boxing wants to get women killed,” Constitutional lawyer and former senior legal advisor to the 45th president Donald Trump, Jenna Ellis said about the new policy on her X – formerly known as Twitter – account. Lauren Boebert, a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Colorado’s Third District, joined Ellis by taking to X and releasing a statement on the new boxing policy. “Let’s call this what it is,” the Colorado congresswoman wrote. “They’re going to allow men to beat women up in a boxing ring. This is pathetic and disgusting.” Conservative political commentator Colin Rugg also made a comment by stating that “South Park was right again,” as he shared a GIF of an episode where a character named “Heather” – who is based off of WWE Legend “Macho Man” Randy Savage – claims to be a transgender Multi-Sport athlete (which included boxing) and starts fighting women. finding a way to compete in women’s sports, which they will have an unfair advantage due to being born with more testosterone than females that allow them to be more athletic and build muscle at better rates. Current women's boxing bantamweight champion Ebanie Bridges – who hails from Australia – made a comment slamming the whole woke agenda that has been pushed by liberal backed outlets like CNN and the declining sports media giant ESPN is actually hurting women’s sports instead of helping it as they claim to do. “I don’t care about ‘political correctness,’” she wrote on X following the news breaking last week. “It’s politically incorrect to have a man fighting a woman… and [I don’t care] that’s exactly what this is… this society is too soft… This is our health and safety. The girls need to stick together or women’s sports in
50 years will be filled with maleborn champions.” Bridges followed up her statement by making another comment on X, essentially doubling down on her previous statement. “It’s bad enough having trans women breaking records in other sports like track and field, swimming and powerlifting but it’s a bit different to them breaking our skulls in combat sports where the aim is to hurt you, not just break a record.” Bridges said, “It ain’t just about the test levels, what about their bone density and a heap of other biological factors. Cutting your bits off and adding boobs won’t take back the masculine maturity your body has gone through before you decided you are now a woman. #ISaidWhatISaid.” Bridges was just one of many professional female combat athletes to comment on the
situation as current MMA fighter and former unbeaten boxer Claressa Shields and professional boxer Mikaela Mayer also made comments on the new policy. “This is, I don't know… Not the right decision.” said Shields on her X account. “By default, this should make trans athletes ineligible for competition. Period,” said Mayer. “Doesn’t matter how you feel about the situation, fact is, it’s illegal and completely disrupts the even playing field that sport works so hard to create.” “Allowing men into the world of women’s boxing is downright absurd and it shows how the current generation of liberal ideology and the LGBTQIA+ movement in sports is doing way more harm than good to female athletes. The second the first biological female dies, receives a concussion, or suffers a lifealtering injury, will the USA Boxing committee then realize the cloddish and dangerous mistake they made.” This whole movement took to a new level of messed up when a man on the University of Pennsylvania swim team transitioned to a woman, becoming known as Lia Thomas and dominating the sport while also making all the female athletes feel disturbed knowing that a biological man would share a locker room with them as well. This one incident sparked national outrage and the negative effects it has has spread across many sports from basketball, track and field, and even the World of Croquet in recent months.

It’s Playoff Time

The NFL playoff picture is set and while it took some twists and turns to get here, most of the teams are no surprise to be in the field. What could be a surprise will come next when we have weaker top teams than in years past, and many of these playoff contenders have limped to the finish line. In fact, it's not far fetched to say that every team in the playoff picture has a glaring weakness, the question is can anyone take advantage of those, while masking their own inadequacies. The San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens gained the #1 seeds and with the new NFL format, they get the only bye in this year's field. They also get home field advantage throughout. Both of these teams have been steamrolling for much of the season and are rightfully sitting as the favorites to win the title. The Niners come in at +230 to win it all, while the Ravens are +330 to lift the Lomardi trophy. With that said a pessimist can point to Brock Purdy's ugly performance just a few weeks ago, against this Baltimore team, to see that San Fran is not unbeatable. While
history, and Lamar Jackson's playoff failures should give everyone pause before backing the truck up to jump on them to win it all. The Bills made the playoffs after a tough stretch and despite going into Sunday with a chance to be eliminated from playoff contention they still are the second slimest odds in the AFC at 8 to 1 to win the championship. Their deficiencies are well documented, but they might just be the most dangerous team, with the most dangerous QB, in the playoffs. Miami sat atop the AFC East for much of the season, but with a pretty weak record against teams over .500 their 13 to 1 odds to win the chip aren't making too many bettors excited. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid can never be discounted, but while they have some major holes this season, they still won the AFC West ... again, and now sit with a tempting +900 line to repeat as champions. If you like an underdog story you don't have to look any further than Joe Flacco and the Browns. Cleveland lost their star QB, RB, and had to call up Joe off the couch. But, his championship pedigree and
dominant defense have people looking at that 34 to 1 number with a sharp eye. The Texans will be a favorite bet for the public because of their young gun slinger CJ Stroud, but going through the AFC gauntlet seems like a tall task while Pittsburgh has huge odds and a winning coach, they will be without their best player in TJ Watt and that's a lot to ask for even the most die hard Steelers fan. Over in the NFC it has seemed like it's been the Niners championship to lose for a while, but they are dangers out there. Dallas finally won on the road, and their offense led by Dak and Lamb put fear into all the defensive coordinators in the league. They sit at +750 with the 3rd shortest odds to win the title. Philly would love to get back to where they came up just short last year, but they have limped (literally with AJ Brown limping off the field) to the finish line. If you believe in what you watched in the first half of the season then 13 to 1 odds seem like a gift, but if you're basing your assessment of the Eagles off of the past month, that gift is like coal in a stocking. The
Lions will be a popular bet because they are a fun and exciting team with lots of weapons. At +1700 they have some good value as well, but talk to any Detroit fan and they will inevitably bring up the fact that the Motor City has won 1 playoff game in their lifetime, seemingly no matter how old they are. Tampa Bay won the division after beating Carolina 9-0 Sunday and Baker Mayfield is a feel good story, but even at 75 to 1 odds they don't seem like a smart bet. The same can be said for Green Bay, who comes in
with the same odds. Maybe Sean McVay and Matt Stafford have one more run in them? At +5500 they certainly have some good looking odds, but you still have to trust that sub par defense. All in all the smart odds will say we are headed for a Niners / Ravens SuperBowl but this year is unlike many of the past seasons because there are pitfalls everywhere even for the best teams. We are set for a fun playoff season and one that might pay off for smart bettors.

Can You Be Removed from a Deed Without Your Consent?

Q: Can I be removed from a deed without my consent? A:
In general, a person cannot be removed from a deed without his or her consent and signature on a deed. Absent legal action with a court order, such as a foreclosure or a partition action, the only way an owner’s interest in real property can be transferred is by a properly executed, acknowledged and recorded deed conveying that owner’s interest to a new party. If two or more people own real property jointly as tenants in common, a co-owner is unable to remove the other co-owner by executing a new deed - a person can only convey what they own. A title company will search all transfers to certify the record owners and those with an interest in the property will be required to execute the deed to the purchaser. To illustrate, if A and B own
a property together as tenants in common, each owning a fifty percent interest and A executes a subsequent deed transferring the property to C without B joining the deed, A only conveyed what she had, a fifty percent interest to C. B remains the owner of the other fifty percent interest, and is now a co-owner with C. In contrast, if property is owned as tenants by the entirety, customarily between spouses, then a co-owner cannot transfer his or her half without the consent of the other. In New York State, if a couple divorces, the joint ownership automatically becomes tenancy in common. A common occurrence in the area of trusts and estates practice is when one co-owner wants to sell the property and the other does not. The typical scenario is where a parent dies and
children inherit that parent’s real property. If one child who is now a co-owner refuses to sell or buy out the other siblings, the only option for the siblings is a partition action. In a partition action, the court will order the parties to sell to a third party, splitting the proceeds according to the parties’ interests.
Unfortunately, this process is costly and takes time within the court system. If this scenario is a concern, it is best to speak with an experienced attorney who can properly draft the estate planning documents to avoid this situation. If you feel that someone
unlawfully transferred your interest in real property by forging your signature or some other method, you should speak with an experienced real estate attorney to review your options. When fraud involves seniors who have become incapacitated, a guardianship and turnover proceeding is often the quickest way to address the transfer. Otherwise, a civil action to “quiet title” will need to be brought in the Supreme Court where in the county where the property is located.
