Mastic Beach Mini Indie Film Festival Returns Mastic Beach, and to help with local economic development. The curtain will rise on the festival November 5, the first time in two years since the event was 100% virtual in 2020 due to the pandemic. This year events will be offered both in person and virtually. Friday will feature free children's screenings in partnership with the Mastic-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. Festival headquarters and screening venues which will highlight musicians, artists,
and international, tri-state and United States films, will be sited all along Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach. Local businesses and organizations are very much a part of the festival's extravaganza. And, there will be no shortage of activities as new filmmakers will have opportunities to showcase their works coupled with established filmmakers. A host of workshops and events pertaining to filmmaking, writing, and acting will also be offered. Saturday's events will include, but will not be limited to an author's reading by Susan Scarf Merrell, author of 'Shirley,' a novel and film, thematic short film blocks, talkbacks and Q's & A's with directors, writers and producers, a midnight surreal film block, and live music. Tickets are on sale for the Sunday brunch event which will features mixer and live music, and cocktails, screenings, Q & A with writer/director Richard Vetere and producer Maja Wampuszyc. Festival-goers will enjoy live music and networking as the event comes to a close on Sunday evening. Evans is a graduate of Fordham
and Stony Brook universities. While pursuing his masters degree at SUNY Stony Brook, Evans met fellow student, Amy Gaipa who hails from Michigan, with whom he co-founded the festival. The MBMIFF is a tribute to Evans' proud mother, Donna, the namesake of his company. "This is an homage to my mom, a nod to her," Evans said. "When I was in film school, all of my productions were held at her house," he recounts. The youngest of three siblings, Evans has two older sisters, and remembers his dad
who passed away in 2005. "I'm super excited about this year's theme, which is a celebration of grit, and also that this year we'll be offering our first student scholarship to an undergraduate film student at Stony Brook," Evans explained. This year's festival will also feature the inaugural presentation of the Grit Award to festival headliner, author, director and writer Austin Pendleton. Panico and Town Board Select Beechwood Organization as Master Developer for Revitalization of Neighborhood Road in Mastic Beach Brookhaven Town Councilman Dan Panico changed the course of history for the Mastic Beach hamlet today when he announced that he and fellow board members unanimously selected the Beechwood Organization as the Master Developer for Mastic Beach’s Neighborhood Road. The award was made at the October 21 Town Board meeting. Neighborhood Road serves as the hamlet’s downtown business district which has long suffered from blight and deterioration. Substandard structures, dilapidated, and vacant storefronts have plagued the area for decades. In 2019, the Town conducted a blight study of Neighborhood Road and surrounding streets, which was the first significant step in efforts towards major revitalization of the area. The study confirmed that the area had a sufficient amount of blight, code violations and obstacles that have deterred meaningful investment in Neighborhood Road. The Town then sought a Master Developer tasked with creating a comprehensive plan that
would showcase a variety of land uses, such as housing, retail and restaurants, aimed at replacing existing decay along Neighborhood Road. The Town chose Beechwood based on its expertise and proven track record. Councilman Panico said, “Every action we take is in furtherance of writing a new positive chapter in the history of Mastic Beach. The designation of Beechwood as Master Developer pursuant to the request for qualifications is the latest step, and a major step, in realizing the revitalization of downtown Mastic Beach. I look forward to working with them on this project and know that they possess the ability and credentials essential to realize the comprehensive redevelopment that has been sought after by residents for quite some time. People have talked about getting it done for the area; I want to actually see it done. Brick by brick, and block by block.” Supervisor Ed Romaine said, “I commend Councilman Panico for his determination to revitalize the Mastic
Beach business district. After years of planning and community input, the Town is ready to move ahead with creating a brighter future for Neighborhood Road and the Mastic Beach community. The selection of the Beechwood Organization is a decisive first step and I look forward to seeing their vision of the new Neighborhood Road as the master plan is developed.” The Beechwood Organization has successfully built mixed-use developments that have repurposed underutilized sites across Long Island and the State of New York since 1985 such as Country Pointe in Plainview and Yaphank; Meadowbrook Pointe in Westbury and Medford; The Vanderbilt luxury apartment-hotel in Westbury; and at the waterfront, Marina Pointe in East Rockaway and Arverne by the Sea in the Rockaways, recognized by the Urban Land Institute as the largest oceanfront, residential revitalization project in the Northeast. Moving forward, Beechwood will work closely with the Town and Mastic Beach community to further develop

Community Says “Welcome Home” to Homeless Vets Senator Anthony Palumbo. “This $2.4 million will help to ensure that our most vulnerable veterans have access to safe, clean, and affordable housing while providing them with greater access to mental health and other critical services.” These services include employment and training opportunities, counseling, instruction in independent-living skills, connection to primary health care, substance-use treatment, and childcare.
“I want to officially welcome you home,” said Colleen Merlo, LMSW, CEO of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW), to several previously homeless veterans who have moved into safe, brandnew residences. At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 19, 2021, MHAW celebrated the completion of a $2.4-million-dollar project to build permanent supportive housing for formerly homeless veterans in Suffolk County. The work included the renovation of a house in Medford, where the event took place, and the construction of new buildings in Riverhead and Mastic. Suffolk County transferred the
three properties to MHAW under the Housing Our Homeless Heroes Act, legislation that the county enacted in 2014 with the aim of ending homelessness among veterans. The New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance financed the construction through its Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. Under the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative, the New York State Office of Mental Health will provide $110,000 in annual operating funds. “I applaud the state’s continued support of Suffolk County’s veteran population, which is one of the largest in the nation,” remarked State

Sini announced that a New York State law that allows criminal defendants to move for a court order granting them access to crime scenes, including an individual’s home, has been deemed unconstitutional in a Suffolk County Court ruling. The law was passed by State lawmakers as part of the sweeping criminal justice reforms, including amendments to bail and discovery laws, that were enacted in 2020. “This is one of the many statutes included in the 2020 bail and discovery reforms that I opposed from the very beginning,” District Attorney Sini said. “It has the potential to re-traumatize crime victims, is invasive of victims’ privacy, and – as we successfully argued in this case – is blatantly
unconstitutional. This decision is a win for victims’ rights and a win for public safety. We will continue to oppose this law should the decision be challenged, and will fight to protect residents’ safety.”

He was arrested on Aug. 10, 2020, and charged with Burglary in the Second Degree, a class C felony; Burglary in the Third Degree, a class D felony; and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a class A misdemeanor, for his alleged possession of a quantity of crack cocaine. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney James Scahill, formerly of the Felony Offense Bureau’s Major Crime Unit and currently assigned to the Vehicular Crime Bureau.

Changes to New York Power of Attorney

the principal, or it may be specific, limiting the authority to certain activities or transactions. A new Power of Attorney law went into effect in June cleaning up some of the problems associated with the previous document.

Powers of Attorney are an effective and frequently used tool in many areas of the law, particularly with elder and estate planning. By executing a power of attorney, the principal authorizes another individual, the agent, to act on his or her behalf. The authority granted in a Power of Attorney can be broad, permitting the agent to conduct any sort of business on behalf of
On December 15, 2020, changes were made to the provisions of New York State Law updating Powers of Attorney for financial and estate planning. The changes to the law and the forms were made to clarify and simplify the Power of Attorney Law that was previously amended in 2010. The new law makes several important changes to the form and there is now a presumption the Power of Attorney is valid. The principal is no longer required to sign the power if they are unable to do so and may direct someone to execute on their behalf in the principal’s presence. However, two witnesses, not named in the Power, are now required when executing in addition to being notarized.
Additionally, the new law will no longer require a separate statutory gift rider and can now be included in the modification portion of the form. Even if the power to gift is not included, the agent may still gift on behalf of the principal up to $5,000 annually. Finally, the Power of Attorney only needs to substantially conform with the statutory language. Institutions cannot unreasonably reject a Power of Attorney and may subject them to penalties for doing so. Institutions may, however, request more information from the agent or an attorney. Powers of Attorney properly executed before June 13th are still valid. From June 13th onward, all Powers of Attorney must be made using the new forms or substantially conform to the new form. As with all important legal documents, you should consult an attorney before signing a new Power of Attorney form.

Scam Calls from Fake PSEG Representatives
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The caller ID read as the phone rang: PSEG, LONG ISLA. Yes, the ND was missing—and that was not all that was missing earlier this month. There was no truth to the call. It was a scam. Our PSEG electric service, the caller advised, would be cut off in a half-hour to 45 minutes because of non-payment. I asked, clearly regarding this as a scam, how I was to know this was really PSEG Long Island. I was told I would be switched to the “manager.” The “manager” got on the phone, identified herself as with PSEG Long Island. I identified myself as a journalist highly suspicious about the call believing it a scam. The “manager” immediately slammed down her phone. I am not alone in getting such a scam call. Earlier this year, PSEG—out of its headquarters in Newark, New Jersey— issued a press release saying it “encourages customers to learn how to spot the signs of fraud and scams, and report them.” The press release quoted Fred Daum, PSEG executive director of customer operations, saying: “Protecting our customers is a top priority. It is critically important we continue to raise awareness and educate customers about how to spot potential scams. Scammers continue
to adapt and develop increasingly sophisticated tactics to take advantage of our customers.”

The PSEG release went on: “Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, scammers have increased calls, texts, emails and in-person tactics, and they continue to contact utility customers asking for immediate payment to avoid service disconnection.” It added that PSEG “doesn’t send a single notification to a customer within one hour of a service disconnection. The company will also never ask customers to make payments with a prepaid debit card, gift card, any form of cryptocurrency or third-party digital payment via fund transfer applications.” Under “Signs of potential scam activity,” PSEG listed first: “Threat to disconnect: Scammers may aggressively tell the customer their utility bill is past due and service will be disconnected if a payment is not made—usually within an hour.’ The release said: “If a customer has doubts about the legitimacy of a call or an email—especially one in which payment is requested—call the company directly at 1-800-436-PSEG.” I did just that. The automated voice on the other end, after

It has said that that the “estimated loss” from “telemarketing fraud” in the U.S. is “more than $40 billion” a year. It has set up an AARP Fraud Watch Network. And the AARP “has been inundated with calls this year about scams,” it reported this month. These include “someone impersonating an IRS agent, Medicare official, Social Security Administration officer,” and so on. announcing “Thank you for calling PSEG New Jersey” asked: “What would you like help with today.” I said, “Scam.” “Sorry I missed that,” the voice went on. “Please tell me what you are calling about today….an emergency, making a payment, account balance, repairs, moving, energy efficiency program, or it’s something else.” I repeated “Scam.” And remained lost

BY TOM BARTON This past week Yankee fans had to endure one of the worst postseason scenarios that they could imagine. The hated Boston Red Sox were overachieving and advancing in the playoffs, while the cheating Houston Astros were the only team standing in the way of their pursuit of another World Series. What's worse is that Boston was supposed to have a 'down year' and they are in this position because of superior coaching and great under the radar pickups. If this week wasn't bad enough for the Yankee faithful, it was announced that Brian Cashman and the brain trust decided to not use their brains and resigned Aaron Boone to manage this squad yet again. With Aaron Boone returning the Yankees have made it loud and clear to the league and their fans ... mediocre

Sports books didn't adjust this season to the poor management and poor roster decisions the Yankees made as they were the co-favorites in the AL to go to the World Series and significant favorites to win the AL East. Judging by the pre-market prices, the Yankees might finally be losing respect from bettors and sports books. If you ask any Yankee fan they will tell you this roster needs help, and while Boone might not be the reason, he certainly isn't the answer either. Aaron Boone's record seems to be the constant defense point for his supporters, but it has to be asked, what is the goal? Boone won just 92 games last season and was on pace for 89 wins in 2020. Sure, he won 100 and 103 in the previous years, but we can't

Have the Yankees become the type of organization that considers a Wild Card berth a success? It seems they have. The fear is that things will only get worse in the Bronx. When you start to see a Wild Card as the goal, then barely missing the Wild Card isn't a total failure. When you see your division and watch the young and exciting Blue Jays, the young Rays who just went to the big game and the Red Sox who are doing big things this season, is it really far fetched to see New York as a 4th place team? The Yankees have not made the World Series since 2009 and by signing Aaron Boone they are making it clear that the new goal isn't a World Series championship, but rather
The NY Giants rolled into Week 7 with a 1-5 record and the 27th ranked NFL defense when it comes to average yards allowed per game. Calls for GM Dave Gettleman’s job will only get louder if the losing continues. And it is sure to this week with RB Saquon Barkley and WR Kenny Golladay both doubtful for the matchup with Sam Darnold and the Carolina Panthers. From a fantasy football perspective there is nothing attractive about Giants players on either offense or defense or their team defense as a unit. Golladay was a big free agent signing this past off-season but he is a long way away from the 11 TD’s he scored in 2019. I was never honestly that impressed with the signing and found myself letting out a yawn when it was announced. The Giants’ problems for 4 straight seasons can be traced to their offensive and defensive lines. That Dave Gettleman has been unable to address these obvious weaknesses will lead to his downfall and eventual firing. The matchup for the Giants in Week 7 is an interesting one, because both QB’s took major steps backwards for their respective teams in Week

6. Sam Darnold has a completion percentage of 48.7% in the last 2 games. His yards per attempt has been a dreadful 4.9. Giants QB Daniel Jones was flat out terrible in Week 6 with another 4 turnovers to add to his lofty turnover total over this season and for his career. If Daniel Jones continues to have this inconsistency in holding on to the football the Giants will need to turn the page on him and seek another option at QB. Nobody likes to see their team waste two of its seasons on a big bust at QB but Gettleman set himself up for this by drafting a RB and a QB with such a bad offensive line in place. Where has the Giants defense been? It’s a great question. Rookie defensive lineman Azzez Ojulari is only 20 years old and he should have been taken in the 1st round of this past NFL draft. An arthritis prognosis from a high school knee injury scared teams away and Dave Gettleman made a good draft pick. CB Aaron Robinson selected in the 3rd round of this past draft was likewise viewed as a 2nd round talent by many and Gettleman nabbed another decent value pick. 2020 1st round draft pick Andrew Thomas is sizing up as a bust at left
with the Wild Card. That is the new Yankees, and fans should be furious.

He has been turning heads since his freshman season, and he’s been at his best in his
The COVID shortened 2020 baseball season gave us a wonderful post season from Tampa Bay Devil Ray Randy Arozarena. All eyes were on Arozarena for the 2021 season to see if the magic continued. While he wasn’t confused with the absolute terror he was the previous fall, he did hit .274 with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. His 53 walks led to a .356 on base percentage and 94 runs scored. All in all, a very solid season. In this year’s playoffs, Atlanta 3rd baseman Austin Riley is proving to be one of the National League’s up and coming stars. His 33 home runs and 107 RBI’s paired with a .304 batting average give Atlanta the best tandem of corner infielders in the National League. Paired with 1B Freddie Freeman Atlanta has one heck of an infield. Riley is getting clutch hits this post season and looks real good doing it.

Cleanliness is Next to Godliness - Part II

Last week, we wrote about this topic with respect largely to the things we drop in the water. So, what about the things we bring out there, like our copper-oxide bottom paint? This column is about that.
Painting With Poison
Yes, if you really think about it, we paint the bottoms of our boats with poison. Intentionally. We’re trying to kill barnacles, algae, slime and other stowaways who can clog our intake valves, foul our running gear and, as a consequence, actually create another bio-hazard as we have to apply more power (meaning burning more fuel and creating more exhaust) to move the boat at a given speed. So, our intentions are not necessarily ignoble – but if we start to address some of the collateral damage, we can make them noble. The history of the War of the Barnacles goes back to the Phoenicians. They used many substances – including lead and tar – to battle the speed-killing and weightadding stowaways. It wasn’t until the Romans realized that shields of battle work at sea too – and shielded their ships with copper sheathing – that something effective began to turn the battle in favor of the mariners. This technique lasted for millennia. History tells us that Nelson had an inherent 20% speed advantage over the Spaniards at the Battle of Trafalgar because

solutions cost more? They already do and they will continue too. Not sure there is any way around that one…
A lot of dangerous things don’t reach the tipping point until there is a lot of something acting on the environment. By the 1950s, boating had begun to be popular enough that scientists started to notice that shellfish were being affected by these bottom paints. This started the process that more than a half-century later is showing up in various alternatives.
A Primer of Sorts
There is a lot of material out there and you can always discuss it with your dock master, who is certainly interested in the health of our waterways. The largest anti-fouling paint company, InterLux, maintains a lot of material online (www. yachtpaint.com).
Two Pounds a Year
A 30’ boat, painted with copper-oxide anti-fouling paint, leaches 2 pounds of copper into the waterways. Each year. Now, before you start to feel like an environment killer, scientists note that Nature naturally leaches 250,000 tons of copper into the sea each year – compared to the ~15,000 tons that all the sea-going vessels add. But the ocean is one thing – a marina with 100 vessels closely packed is another. And that is the rub, sort to speak. States and municipalities are starting to notice and taking action in two ways – restricting boat owners from using certain bottom paint mixtures and keeping marina owners from draining their waste water into the sea. Connecticut banned marina owners from doing so a few years back, requiring them to collect the water and bring it to a treatment plant. Sounds
expensive, which just ends up in dockage fees or, worse, fees so high that boaters start to drop out… Eventually, the Feds will bring a suit under the Clean Water Act and then the game is afoot. But the regulators aren’t just throwing (your) money at the problem. They are sponsoring “bake-offs” where boat owners and paint companies can try different formulas to address the issue. San Diego both passed a law that requires the amount of copper pollution in the Port of San Diego
to be reduced by 75% in 15 years – and has created test beds for various formulas. And they have found that not only are different chemicals effective (such as zinc) but also paints can be made more “slick” so those stowaways can’t grab a toe-hold (or whatever it is that they hold on with!) The paint companies haven’t sat on their hands and have developed a number of alternatives – but getting approval from the EPA to add a chemical to the equation takes considerable time too. Will the

Education, Home Loan and Other Benefits
The spouse or children may have earned education benefits to pay for college or training. Survivors of veterans who are of limited means may qualify for VA pensions. As a surviving spouse you might qualify for a VA home loan in addition, you or your children may receive burial benefits and many other services. The education and training benefits for survivors are referred to as “Chapter 35 benefits” through a GI bill program.

Divorce can be either a negative, self-defeating experience in your life or a positive, growth-producing experience. It depends on what you are willing to learn from it and how you put what you have learned into practice. Below are nine growing through divorce steps, from my collection of tools through the years: 1. Realize that time is a healer, and you must walk through that process one day at a time. No one can walk through it for you. No one else will have the exact feelings and experiences. Some days the growth time will be an hour or maybe even half a day. But you will grow! 2. Come to grips with yourself. You can’t deny your existence no matter how frustrated, lonely, guilty, angry, or desperate you may feel. 3. Set aside time for reflection, meditation, reading, thinking, and
personal growth. There are many situations around you that you will be powerless to change. But you can always work on changing yourself. Allow yourself sufficient time to do this.
10. Begin to develop a new support system that will give you a sense of belonging and self-identity for your time of transition. Your goal is to slowly build a new support system for your new life.
4. Get with healthy people who are struggling but growing. There is only minimal comfort in hearing other people’s divorce stories while you are going through yours. Healthy people are those who let the past die and who live and grow in the present.
11. Give yourself time for emotional purging. We do one of two things with our emotions. We express them or repress them. Only by expressing them do we find a sense of relief and healing. Putting on a happy face when you have a sad heart only denies your feelings.
5. Seek professional therapy if you seem lost. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
12. Be willing to integrate your divorce experience with others in the form of caring, sharing, contrasting, and support. Even when you are at the bottom of the well humanly, you can find something to give to another hurting person. They in turn will give to you.
6. Accept the fact that you are divorced (or divorcing) and now single. Many divorced people still feel married. You are not “between marriages,” you are single! 7. Watch out for relational rescue attempts. When we are in pain, we are emotionally vulnerable to anyone with
an outstretched hand and kind word. Some people prey on hurting people. Be on your guard. 8. Put the past in the past and live in the present.
9. Look at your divorce-recovery process as a healing experience. You are recovering from the surgery of loss. All healing takes time – two to three years. Be patient with this process!
