Volunteers Honored at Colonial Youth Ceremony
By Robert Chartuk Some have volunteered for 1,000 hours, some 250, many for 100–all honored at a special ceremony by local officials who said they are well on their way to be the next generation of community leaders. “They always show up and give one hundred percent,” said Ray Hopp of Colonial Youth Volunteer Corps, a group that has been organizing activities in the Tri-Hamlet Area of Mastic, Shirley and Moriches for nearly 30 years. They start out at William Floyd as juniors and seniors and continue their service into college and adulthood, according to Hopp, the deputy director at the volunteer corps’ parent group, Colonial Youth and Family Services. One volunteer was Carolyn Borak of Moriches, who’s been at it for 25 years after starting out in junior high. She has participated in all of the group’s activities, including neighborhood cleanups, helping out at food parties, and maintaining the community garden at the town center on Herkimer Street in Mastic. A project Borak said she looks forward to is the Trunk or Treat safe Halloween effort and selling flowers to help students afford their school prom. Sixteen-year-old Davyen Robinette of Shirley was also in the house for the ceremony, saying he likes the group’s

graffiti removal efforts, which have cleaned more than 6,000 areas targeted by vandals, according to Hopp. The volunteers also play a key role in helping more than 200 needy families through the holidays and are always up early to assist with the 5K run to benefit the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library and the annual triathlon at Smith Point Park. “They’ve put in more than 87,000 hours of volunteer service,” noted April Coppola, president of the William Floyd School Board. “If they earned the $15 an hour minimum wage, you’re talking $1.3 million in service to our community,” Copolla calculated. “That’s amazing.” “You are our community’s silent heroes,” Suffolk Legislator Jim Mazzarella told
the assembled group. “You just want to help your neighbors, but we’re looking at you to be our next leaders, our civic association presidents, school board members, legislators. This is where it starts,” Mazzarella said. “What you are giving will stay with you for the rest of your lives,” state Senator Dean Murray said to the volunteers as he awarded them official certificates from his office, as well as from Assemblyman Joe DeStefano. “You’re going to have to build a new wall for all of the awards you’re getting.” Lynda Zach, Colonial Youth director, said she admires the volunteers for getting up at five o’clock in the morning to help at events. “You have my heartfelt thanks. A new South Country School District literacy initiative, Clipper Literacy Leaders, is bringing together high school and elementary school students. The program, spearheaded by Vicki Williams, a literacy coach at Kreamer Street Elementary, and Colleen Oates-Robesch, the high school’s library media specialist, aims to promote literacy and a love of reading. Through the initiative, high school English language arts students visit the district’s elementary schools and read books to elementary students. The selected books tie into the district’s social and emotional learning curriculum and connect with cultural/identity celebrations of each month.

The program kicked off on Oct. 4 with high school students visiting Kreamer Street to read “Isabel and Her Colores Go to School” by Alexandra Alessandri, which focuses on empathy. The bilingual book was selected because it ties into Hispanic Heritage Month. “It was a wonderful way to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in an authentic manner,” said Oates-Robesch. Going forward, high school students will be visiting Frank P. Long, Brookhaven and Verne W. Critz elementary schools to read books including “The Undefeated” by Kwame Alexander, “Firebird” by Misty Copeland and “Out of a Jar” by Deborah Marcero.

Hero’s Welcome for World War II Soldier
By Robert Chartuk It was a hero’s welcome for Army Sgt. Bernard J. Sweeney, Jr., whose remains were returned to U.S. soil after he went missing in action during a World War II battle in Germany 79 years ago. Fire departments from across Suffolk County flew huge American flags along the route to the Calverton National Cemetery, which was closed to traffic as a horse-drawn caisson carried Sweeney’s coffin draped with the Stars and Stripes of the country he gave his life defending. Under the command of Gen. Omar Bradley in December 1944, Sweeney, 22 years old, was assigned to Company I, 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division. His unit was engaged in battle with enemy forces near Strass, Germany, in the Hürtgen Forest, when he was reported missing in action. The body of the Waterbury, Connecticut native was not found. Following the end of the war, the American Graves Registration Command was tasked with investigating the Hürtgen area between 1946 and 1950, but was unable to find Sweeney’s remains. He was declared non-recoverable in 1951. Fast forward 70 years for an incredible announcement by the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), a military office tasked with finding soldiers who never made it home. While studying unresolved American losses in the region, a DPAA historian determined that a set of remains designated X-2752 Neuville, recovered from a minefield north of Kleinhau, Germany in 1946, might belong to Sweeney. The remains, which had been buried in the Ardennes American Cemetery in 1950, were disinterred in 2019 and sent to the DPAA laboratory at Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska.
To match them to the infantryman, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis, as well as circumstantial evidence. Additionally, scientists from the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System used mitochondrial DNA and Y chromosome DNA analysis to identify the hero who made the ultimate sacrifice so many years ago. Sweeney’s name is recorded on the Walls of the Missing at the Netherlands American Cemetery, a Battle Monuments Commission site in Margarten, along with the others still missing from World War II. A rosette will be placed next to his name to indicate he has been accounted for. The longest battle in German territory during World War II at three months, the Hürtgen Forest campaign cost the First Army an estimated 55,000 fighters killed or wounded, with German losses at 28,000. The U.S. attack was meant to disrupt enemy supply lines, which were being used in preparation for the Battle of the Bulge. “The Sergeant had no immediate family or next of kin,” noted county Executive Steve Bellone, who attended the Calverton ceremony. “Today, all of the free world is his next of kin.” “It is being asked that the
route from Alexander-Rothwell Funeral Home to Calverton National Cemetery be safely lined with as many persons and equipment as possible,” said South Country Ambulance Chief Gregory Miglino, Jr. in a letter requesting local departments to turnout in honor of the long-ago soldier. The community responded in a most patriotic way as hundreds witnessed the procession with hands in heartfelt salute. The Calverton National Cemetery was established in 1978 on 1,045 acres secured from the Grumman Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant. It is the largest facility of its kind, and the busiest with over 212,000 interments. Other notables resting with Sgt. Sweeney are Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a Navy
SEAL who gave his life in Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom, and Air Force Col. Francis S. Gabreski,
the top American fighter ace in Europe during World War II and a jet fighter ace in Korea.
Medford Fire Dept Open House On Friday October 6th, 2023 the Medford Fire Department held their Fire Prevention Open House, there were many activities to do like the smoke trailer, extinguish grease fires, practice putting out a house fire, climb in the fleet and even a live extrication drill. There was a large turnout from the community and politicians in clouding Ed Romaine and Joe DeStefano. The open house started at 6p.m and ended at 9p.m. The open house was held at 171 Oregon Avenue, at

headquarters. There was also a presence made by both the Brookhaven Town Fire Marshal’s Office, represented by Brian Smith and the Suffolk County Fire Marshal, with their outstanding arson dog. The Suffolk County Sheriffs Office also brought their emergency management truck and some buggies for the kids to ride. The department also allowed for the public to take a ride up and down their ladder truck, in the basket. What a fun filled night for the family.

Co. Exec. Bellone Proposes $3.9 Billion Budget The 2024 Recommended Budget is Bellone’s fourth straight structurally balanced spending plan. The county also received a lift from state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli when he reported Suffolk as having a “zero” risk for financial stress.
By Robert Chartuk Nearly $4 billion will flow through county coffers under a budget proposed by Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone, which he says will freeze general fund taxes and comply with the statemandated 2% tax cap for the 12th straight year he’s been in office. “This budget is a blueprint for long-term financial stability and protects taxpayers against future tax hikes,” Bellone said of a spending plan he won’t be around to implement since he can’t run for reelection under Suffolk’s term limit law. His two potential successors, Edward Romaine and Dave Calone, both promise to scour the spending plan for potential taxpayer savings (see related story in this week’s South Shore Press). “Having worked hard over 12 years to transform the $500 million structural budget deficit my administration inherited into four straight years of budget surpluses, our efforts are now focused on creating long-term financial stability for Suffolk County taxpayers,” Bellone said in passing his plan over to the county Legislature’s Office of Budget Review, which will release a report on it October 25. “Our initial focus

included creating a leaner, more efficient government through streamlining, consolidation, and innovation. Having accomplished that goal, the Recommended 2024 Budget is designed to make sure the county’s strong financial condition continues well into the future.” Working with the legislature over a period of years, Bellone was able to gradually take the steps necessary to improve the county’s financial standing and eliminate both a recurring budget deficit and a long-standing structural budget gap, his office noted. “The county consolidated departments, worked with labor unions to obtain
significant healthcare expense savings, and implemented best practice financial reforms and performance management measures to make government more efficient,” Bellone said. The budget comes on the heels of other good news for county taxpayers as Moody’s Investors Service cited Suffolk’s “improved and conservative budgeting,” in lifting its bond rating. While the county had “historically been challenged” to balance revenues and expenditures, “Ongoing efforts to strengthen governance and budgeting have borne fruit, and governance can now be considered more of a strength than a weakness,” Moody’s noted.
Selden Fire Dept. Open House By Chase Millwater On Friday October 13th, 2023 the Selden Fire Department held the Fire Prevention Open House at their Headquarters located at 44 Woodmere Place, in Selden. The open house started at 6:30p.m and ended at 9:00p.m. There were many family fun activities like touch a truck, the smoke house, goodies, live demos, and stop drop and roll. Suffolk County Police also brought a rollover simulator to demonstrate what happens when you don’t wear a seatbelt and you’ve been involved in a crash with an overturn. Rewards were given out to the local elementary schools for fire prevention
posters, this years theme was “Stop, Drop, and Roll”. The live demos started at 7:00p.m, this year the Selden Fire
Department Junior Company was permitted to participate in the live demos. Up first was the vehicle extraction demo. Next up was the dryer fire and grease fire demo followed by the bedroom fire and living room fire. The Junior Company worked hard in using the cutters and spreaders for the vehicle extrication, breaking windows for ventilation during the bedroom fire, extinguishing a dryer fire and hose handling. After the demos were over the open house was continued and at 9:00 it was concluded. Good job to this years coordinators of the even Captain James Cotty and Lieutenant Natalie Turner.
According to Bellone, the rating agency pointed out that the county had eliminated a decades-old practice of relying on short-term borrowing to cover operating expenses without relying on federal COVID relief funds to do so. County Comptroller John Kennedy, however, noted that hundreds of millions in relief funds did play a substantial role in bolstering the county’s financial position. Highlights of the county executive’s budget include: Public Safety: The proposed budget funds two police classes totaling 160 officers and continues the implementation of the county’s Historic Police Reform and Reinvention Plan, including the Human Rights Commission reviewing police misconduct complaints in tandem with the Internal Affairs Bureau. Opioid Settlement Funding: Suffolk was the first county in the state to bring litigation against
drug makers and pharmacies in connection with the opioid crisis and has since reached several multi-million dollar settlement agreements. The budget includes $20 million for the second allocation of grant funds to fight opioid addiction, making the total opioid settlement funding to be deployed in Suffolk County in excess of $50 million. Small Business Development: $25 million is allocated for grants to support small business growth and revitalization of downtown and main street business districts. These will help nonprofits and cultural entities that contribute to the vibrancy of Suffolk communities. Protecting the Taxpayer: The budget continues to bolster the county’s reserves, already at the highest levels in history, to ensure that taxpayers are well-protected against any potential economic downturns. In addition to funding the Tax Stabilization, Retirement, and Debt Reserve funds, this year, the county has established a Repair Reserve Fund, which will be used for any necessary emergency repairs to government property rather than relying on bonded funds, resulting in reduced costs for taxpayers, according to Bellone.

Race for County Executive Gets Dirty
By Robert Chartuk The knives are out in the race for county executive, with Democrat Dave Calone and the PACS supporting him hitting the air with negative ads while his opponent, Ed Romaine, responds in kind. "They're desperate," said Romaine, who's running on the Republican and Conservative lines. "They have seen the poll numbers and know they are going to lose. They will say anything to win. It's a desperation move by a candidate who's losing his election." "One thing you learn running against a 40-year politician is that they will say and do anything to hold onto power. Enough," Calone said in summing up his campaign. "Let's move past the lies, Crookhaven scandals, and tax increases. As a prosecutor and businessman, I know what it takes to fight crime, create jobs, and move Suffolk forward." Romaine castigates his opponent, a Democrat, for running with the Working Families Party, which supports cashless bail, defund the police, and the open border policies he said are responsible for the crime wave and drug overdoses affecting many Suffolk families. "Did he tell the Working Families leadership one thing to get their nomination, and now he's telling the voters something else?" Romaine asked. The Calone camp counters by highlighting his experience in the state Attorney General's office and with the U.S. Attorney, where he was part of a team that went after an Al Qaeda terrorist. "They're lying about Dave. He is a former prosecutor who knows what it takes to hold criminals accountable," said Calone's campaign manager, Shane Wolfe. "It's maybe because the Republicans have some imaginary candidate they wish they were running against, but it's not former prosecutor Dave Calone." The candidates are also going at it over campaign donations, with Romaine having raised $1,548,216 to Calone's $1,620,974. The latest financial statements filed with the state Board of Elections October 6 show the Republican with $1,539,351 left in his war chest and the Democrat with $1,019,684, with $750,000 coming from personal loans Calone made to his campaign. "Calone's donations are drying up because people think he's going to lose," Romaine said, noting that his opponent has taken significant contributions from out-of-town sources, including the governor of Colorado, a college friend who enlisted him to run his business operations when he entered public office. "My opponent spent his time creating tax shelters for

billionaires," Romaine stated, "leaving the rest of us to make up the difference." The Republicans point to $10,000 donated by Elliot Spitzer as suspect, the former governor who left office after a scandal involving prostitution. Calone scoffs at the connection, saying he used to work for Spitzer when he was the Attorney General and hasn't spoken to him recently.
In addition to every county law enforcement organization, Romaine has been endorsed by the New York League of Conservation Voters and the Environmental Voters Forum, as well as various labor unions. Calone also has labor unions in his camp, along with the National Organization of Women, Planned Parenthood, and the gun violence group, Moms Demand Action.
According to Wolfe, Calone pledges to cut Suffolk taxes 20% by using a $700 million surplus he says exists in the county's budget. "We need leaders who are ready to hold the line or cut taxes. Not those who think that it's ok to raise taxes year after year," Wolfe said, keying in on a Calone talking point that Brookhaven Town taxes went up every year under Romaine, albeit under the state's tax cap. Romaine panned Calone's promise to make such a drastic cut in county taxes. "It would affect everyone, including child protective services, the health department, the police. He truly wants to defund the police. He hasn't given up on that idea," Romaine charged, adding, "He's aggravated that none of the law enforcement groups have endorsed him, and therefore, he's putting out a huge tax cut proposal that would include cutting the police." Romaine proposes to eliminate the county's tax on energy as a way to bring financial relief to Suffolk taxpayers. "These are extremely regressive taxes that fall most heavily on the poor and those with limited income," the candidate explained. "I want to remove this tax. That's doable. That's something that's intelligent; that's something that's targeted that would work." According to Romaine, cutting county taxes by draining surplus funds would also impact the county bond rating, which county Executive Steve Bellone recently announced was increased by the government rating agencies. Both candidates promised to go through Bellone's budgets line by line to extract savings. The current county executive, who's prohibited from running for reelection due to Suffolk's term limit law, has endorsed Calone.
Romaine recently picked up headlines outside of the county for offering to relocate to Brookhaven the statues of Christopher Columbus and Presidents Washington and Jefferson that Democrats want removed from New York City. His position helped him earn the endorsement of the ItalianAmerican Political Action Committee. The state’s largest government worker union, the Suffolk County Association of Municipal Employees, is also backing him. "Romaine's campaign filing is filled with a who's who of his vendors and people who know the Crookhaven way of needing to go along to get along," Calone's campaign manager says. "Everything in Dave's ads is truthful and based on facts and reality, which is not the case for the ridiculous ads that the GOP is running against Dave. They're crying foul because they're running a candidate who has a failed record of raising taxes eight years in a row and fostering a culture of corruption. And they don't like that. That's the reality." The GOP rings up Calone for his ties to Gov. Kathy Hochul, who wants to take over local zoning authority to build multi-family housing in the suburbs and perpetuates a procriminal, anti-law enforcement atmosphere, they say. They've also dragged President Joe Biden into the race, associating Calone with his open border policy and requiring those fleeing Israel following the Hamas attack to repay the U.S. government for helping them. "We can't trust Hochul Democrats," the GOP ads read. "We can't trust Biden Democrats. Why should we trust Liberal Dave Calone?" Suffolk Democrats are also
hurling mud at their opponents over the town landfill in Yaphank, keying in on a recent media report charging that Covanta, the company that incinerates Brookhaven's garbage and sends the ash to the Horseblock Road facility for disposal, mixed different types of residue from its Westbury plant in order to get by state requirements. Calone campaign ads charge that "The Landfill's toxic ash has caused fatal cases of asthma in children, been described as a textbook case of environmental racism, and reminds us that we cannot trust the leader of 'Crookhaven' to run our county." He's organizing a protest at the site on October 17. "The DEC has a monitor at Covanta 24 hours a day, as they do at the landfill," Romaine said of the Department of Environmental Conservation, the state agency that licenses the two waste management facilities. "The town doesn't test ash, but everyone's going after the town instead of the DEC or Covanta. The DEC tells me they have done their job. So who am I to believe: The protesters who want to make a political statement or a state agency who's charged with this?" The supervisor said he earned the support of the environmental groups, in part, for his plans to close the landfill to construction and demolition debris in 2024 and close it to ash as space allows under the existing DEC permit. He has put forth plans to convert the property to an energy hub with solar and other forms of green energy. Brookhaven GOP Chairman Jesse Garcia noted that it was a previous Democrat administration in the town that wanted to raise the landfill height by 55 feet and made a deal to accept sludge from New York City, both of which were blocked by the Republicans. "Do they want someone who makes crazy proposals that are unrealistic, or do they want someone who's going to govern carefully and sensibly with a common sense approach to government?" Romaine concluded. "It all just goes to the same point if you want to save communities like a prosecutor, and if you want jobs and affordability, elect a business person," Wolfe said. "If you're happy with corruption and tax hikes as usual, feel free to go with the career politician." The candidates are vying for Suffolk's top elected post and would be limited to serving three four-year terms. The job pays $234,124 per year. The Republicans are looking to occupy the county executive seat for the first time in 20 years and hold on to the majority in the county legislature, which they have wrested back from the Democrats over the last few election cycles.

Infamous Holbrook Couple Plead Guilty to Illegal Dumping

Reminder: Vote Tuesday, October 24 on $48.1 Million Center Moriches School Bond Plan
By Robert Chartuk Residents are urged to vote Tuesday, October 24 on a $48.1 million spending plan proposed by the Center Moriches School District for facility renovations and upgrades to its Frowein Road sports complex. The vote, taking place from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Main Street gymnasium, will involve two propositions: $44,366,500 in renovations across district facilities and a $3,750,000 plan for the installation of a turf field at the high school, along with bleacher and press box renovations. If approved, the district estimates that the projects will take place over the course of four
phases starting in the summer of 2024 with borrowing to pay for them spread out as well. The district is expected to receive 78.2% reimbursement on all eligible projects in the form of New York State Building Aid to offset the total cost of the bonds. For the average resident, the total increases over the phases of the two bonds will be $70.14 per month or $841.68 annually. The phases and costs are as follows:

The $1.5 million Phase I of the 100-acre park saw the installation of bathrooms, landscaping, and irrigation, along with the 11foot wide walkway and a new artesian well. Here are the latest updates from the courtroom: Patrick Birney's Testimony: Patrick Birney, an executive within the Trump Organization, testified that the responsibility for constructing Trump's financial statements rested primarily with Allen Weisselberg and controller Jeffrey McConney. Birney clarified that he did not hold the final decision-making authority as an assistant VP. Presidential Property Premium Scrutiny: During the trial, executive Patrick Birney was questioned about including a "Presidential Property Premium" in Trump's financial statements. Birney stated when asked who directed this addition, "I don't really remember, but probably Allen Weisselberg."

McCarthy, who was tenaciously elected as Speaker in January after a taxing 15 rounds of balloting, recently faced a historic removal that has left both political insiders and the general public asking: "What is the true power and purpose of the Speaker of the House of Representitives? The Speaker of the House is a post deeply rooted in American history and was crafted by the framers within Article I, Section II of the Constitution. This leadership role is the eldest within Congress, epitomizing the delicate checks and balances our founders deemed essential. This role, deeply entrenched in tradition and authority, is second only to the vice president in the line of presidential succession. The Speaker is more than a legislative leader. They are the voice and strategist of the majority party, echoing its stances and crafting its legislative trajectory. Fluid Situation Persists at Gaza-Egypt Border Amidst Humanitarian Concerns
By Raheem Soto The situation at the GazaEgypt border remains uncertain as the border crossing remains closed, and conflicting reports surround a potential ceasefire agreement aimed at facilitating the evacuation of foreign national Palestinians and the delivery of crucial humanitarian aid. Amid this fluid and precarious situation, Gaza is mired in a deepening humanitarian crisis marked by severe shortages of clean water, food, fuel, medical supplies, and electricity. Consequently, hundreds of thousands of individuals have been compelled to seek refuge in the southern region of Gaza, searching for safety and necessities. In recent months, the IsraelHamas conflict has exacted a heavy toll on both sides, with thousands of lives lost, communities in ruins, and an unprecedented number of citizens displaced, primarily from the Gaza Strip. The conflict was ignited by a Hamas attack on Israel, resulting in the tragic loss of 1,300 innocent lives.
The Gaza Strip, already densely populated, has witnessed an unprecedented displacement of its citizens. Over 400,000 individuals have been forced to flee their homes, seeking safety and refuge. This figure represents a fraction of the 1.1 million Gaza residents in the southern region whom Israel directed to evacuate—an order that the United Nations has labeled as "extremely dangerous" and, in some cases, logistically
impossible to carry out. The toll of human suffering extends beyond those displaced. Nearly 12,000 individuals have been wounded on both sides of the conflict, with most casualties occurring in Gaza. More than 8,714 people have been injured, requiring medical attention and care. Tragically, the cumulative death toll resulting from the conflict continues to rise. Israel has reported 1,300 casualties,
while Gaza has borne the brunt of the devastation, with at least 2,215 lives lost. These figures underscore the profound impact of the conflict on the region and its people. In response to these dire circumstances, President Joe Biden issued a warning, emphasizing the significant risks associated with any Israeli attempt to occupy Gaza during the upcoming major ground assault. President Biden stressed
the importance of resolving the crisis diplomatically, urging all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire. Despite the ongoing challenges, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remain steadfast in their commitment to their mission within the Gaza Strip. In a recent public statement, IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari affirmed, "The Israel Defense Forces continue to conduct operations in the Gaza Strip. We have successfully eliminated several terrorists, including the head of general intelligence." Amid these developments, a high-level meeting transpired between U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. During the meeting, both leaders briefly sought shelter in a secure bunker in response to air raid sirens. Despite this momentary interruption, their discussions have persevered within a command center, underscoring the determination and resilience of both nations as they address the rapidly evolving situation.

The Legacy in Suffolk of Dr. Edmund Pellegrino
SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN Dr. Edmund Pellegrino as Stony Brook University’s vice president of health sciences created Stony Brook University Hospital and what is now Stony Brook Medicine. It and Northwell Health under Michael Dowling have become giant healthcare networks in Suffolk County. Dowling who grew up in Ireland under difficult family circumstances—his parents were disabled—came to the U.S., studied at Fordham University, became a professor and dean at Fordham, and served as New York State’s director of Health, Education and Human Services and commissioner of its Department of Social Services. CEO of Northwell Health since 199,7 he has led its expansion to include 21 hospitals and being the largest health care provider in the state. Likewise, Dr. Pellegrino’s story is unusual. Raised in Brooklyn, the son of Italian immigrants, Ivy League medical schools weren’t interested in him despite his superb academic record at St. John’s University— because of his Italian background. As a reporter for the daily Long Island Press, I got to know
Dr. Pellegrino after he was appointed in 1966 vice president of the yet-to-be-built Stony Brook University Health Sciences Center and dean of its proposed school of medicine. I wrote about Dr. Pellegrino’s life then, and also in later years in this column. It has been related, too, in the American Medical Association’s Journal of Ethics in a series (it’s online) titled “Illuminating the Art of Medicine.” Dr. Pellegrino was a founder of the field of bioethics. He chaired the U.S. President’s Council on Bioethics. He authored or coauthored 23 books. And after his years at Stony Brook, he became president of The Catholic University of America. “Ironically, this elder statesman of the medical profession was almost not admitted to medical school,” recounts the “Illuminating the Art of Medicine” piece. “Despite his outstanding grades at St. John's University, where he graduated summa cum laude, he was not invited for interviews at any of the schools to which he applied. A letter from one Ivy League school complimented young Pellegrino on his grades but declined his application stating that he would be ‘happier with
his own kind.’ Italians, said his academic advisor, were no more welcome than Jews in the major medical schools, and he might fare better if he changed his name. Pellegrino refused.” “His admission to New York University Medical School was due in part to his father's ingenuity,” the piece continues. “A salesman in wholesale foods in New York, the senior Pellegrino approached one of his customers who owned a restaurant near the campus of NYU and asked to be introduced to one of the regular customers. That customer—the dean of NYU Medical School— asked Mr. Pellegrino to send along his son's grade report. The junior Pellegrino was none the wiser and the rest, as they say, is history.” In the early 1960s, New York State wanted a school of medicine and a hospital at Stony Brook University. But Stony Brook’s top administrators were nuclear physicists unfamiliar with medical education or care. A search committee chose Dr. Pellegrino—and this area got a medical visionary. In my interviews with him back then, Dr. Pellegrino spoke of medicine being a moral enterprise

His obituary in National Catholic Reporter quoted him saying his faith was the single most “important element in my whole life.” Recently, Dr. Robert Iovino, a Southampton-based oral surgeon and clinical professor at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook—and also an admirer of Dr. Pellegrino—provided me with a book of essays by him on “The Philosophical Foundation of Medicine.” In it, Dr. Pellegrino details his plans for “the unique chance to create something new in each of the health professions” at Stony

Dr. Pellegrino’s vision lives on.

Northport Spoils Bellport’s Alumni Day
By Nick Cipolla On yet another rainy weekend on Long Island, Bellport High School Football looked to continue their success from the previous week against in league rival Northport. This game wasn’t just a regular Saturday matchup, Bellport was honoring some of their alumni in attendance for their annual alumni day and Hall of Fame induction ceremony. During halftime the Clippers inducted Norman Dillion (‘80), Mike Pepe (‘06), Jack Nickla (‘08), Jimmy Morrell (‘16) and DJ Trent (‘18) into their programs Hall of Fame. After forcing a Northport 3 and out on the opening drive, Bellport looked to get their run game going as the rain was not going to be the passing game’s best friend. Jahden Oldums and Caleb White both used their legs to pick up first downs on the opening drive. Their opening drive would eventually stall out on Northport’s 46 yard line as they would go 3 and out, punting the ball on fourth and long Northport moved the chains for the first time on a Greyson Cabrera 10 yard rush on the Tiger’s second drive of the game. Unfortunately for them, the bellport defense locked in and forced a 3 and out Bellport would once again 3 and out as Northports defense didn’t give up an inch on the clippers drive, resulting the end of the first quarter to end at a 0-0 score The Tigers offense also looked stagnant until Cabrera and Michael Campoli were able to break off a pair of outside runs for first downs, putting the tigers offense inside the bellport 25 with a chance to score at the beginning of the second quarter On a crucial 4th and short situation, Northport decided to go for it and the decision paid off as they picked up a first down on a six yard run thanks to a gritty run by Campoil, setting up a goal to go scenario. On third and goal from the 3 yard line, Giancarlo Valenti got the ball on a fullback dive and he muscled his way in for the score to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead in the second quarter Bellport got the ball back and they looked to respond to the Northport score. Jahden Oldums got the drive going as he ran for a huge gain on a 4th and short to finally put the Clippers into Northport territory. The Clippers once more faced a 4th and short situation on the Northport 37 and they would pick it up as Caleb White found a receiver wide open at the first down marker to keep the drive going. Oldums rumbled his way down to the 12 to put Bellport into prime scoring position. Oldums would end up finding the end zone as he scored on a 2 yard touchdown to make it a 7-7 game. second quarter, Bellport tried to punt the ball away inside their own 30 and this is one disaster struck as Northport blocked the punt and it rolled out of the end zone, resulting in a safety that would give the Tigers a 9-7 lead right before halftime. After both teams traded three and outs to start the second half, Northport decided to break the ice as they got a drive up substance together as Simon Blissett (who has been playing for the injured Enrique Hernandez) connected with Campoli on a long catch and run to put the tigers inside the Clippers 30 right before the end of the third quarter. The Clippers defense would keep the Tigers out of the end zone, however Northport would connect on 31 yard field goal by Zac Loh to give themselves a 12-7 lead with 10 minutes ago in the fourth quarter Bellport’s offense looked like they were finally showing life again as White would break off a long run that put the Clippers all the way down to Northport 35. Unfortunately for the clippers, they were unable to score any points as Cameron Foley picked off a White pass to give the Tigers the ball back. After forcing a Northport Punt, the Clippers turned around and put the game in the hands of star running back Jahden Oldums. Oldums came up big for the clippers as a long run shut them up inside the Tigers 10 yard line with five minutes to go in the fourth quarter. A Caleb White scramble on third down left the clippers inside the 1 yard line to set up a fourth down and goal to go. White would finish off the job on fourth down as Bellport emulated the Philadelphia Eagles by pushing the quarterback over the goal line in a short yardage
situation to give the Clippers the lead. A two point conversion gave Bellport a 15-12 lead with 3:37 to go in the fourth quarter. Christian Campoli of Northport decided not to waste any time as he would take the ensuing kickoff and take it all the way back for a touchdown to give Northport the

After moving down the field with limited time, the Northport Defense would ultimately keep White and the Clippers out of the end zone, resulting in a Northport victory that spoiled the festivities. Bellport now drops to 3-3 on the season and they hope to get back on the right track as they will take on North Babylon in their Penultimate game of the 2023 season at 2:00 pm on Saturday, October 21st.
Eastport-South Manor Named NYSPHSAA’s Scholar Athlete School of Distinction for 2022-23 By Nick Cipolla The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced that the Eastport-South Manor Sharks have won the distinction of being a Scholar Athlete School of Distinction for this past year thanks in part to the student-athlete’s hard work and dedication both on the field and in the classroom last school year. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association named the school one of 84 schools across the state and one of 20 in Suffolk County a 2022-2023 Scholar-Athlete School of Distinction. This is one of the highest distinctions that a school can earn from their athletes participation in the classroom to go along with their athletics. According to a press release from the school that was obtained by the South Shore Press, 100% of the school’s varsity teams must qualify
for and receive the ScholarAthlete team award during their respective sports seasons in order to receive this honor. Principal Salvatore Alaimo said the school and the district could not be prouder of the student-athletes whose commitment and dedication to academic excellence shines bright on the field. “As a school, we are extremely proud of how our athletes and coaches take pride in the academic standing of
our teams,” Mr. Alaimo said. “This distinction demonstrates the dedication our studentathletes have to their studies, while making a commitment to excellence on our athletic teams.” Congratulations to all the ESM Student-Athletes who helped get their school one of the highest honors a school can receive in the academic realm of High School Athletics! Trevor Bauer Accuser Lied About Everything and The Media Ran With It For Years
By Nick Cipolla The Los Angeles Dodgers, Major Sports Media Outlets, and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred owe Trevor Bauer a huge apology for all the funny business they pulled over the last three years. The Former Cy Young Award winner has been battling false accusations of sexual assault since the middle of 2021 was finally allowed to tell the public his side of the story after his final lawsuit in the highly publicised case was settled out of court. “Over the last two years, I’ve been forced to defend my integrity and my reputation in a very public setting, but hopefully this is the last time I have to do so, as I’d prefer to just remain focused on doing my job, winning baseball games and entertaining fans around the world,” Bauer said in a video on his YouTube Channel released after the settlement. “So today, I’m happy to be moving on with my life.” The plot to take down Bauer began back in 2021 when Lindsey Hill began her goal of trying to ruin Bauer’s life by “stealing all of his money” and making false accusations against him to tarnish his reputation according to leaked text messages between Hill and a friend. “‘Next victim. Star pitcher for the Dodgers,’” Bauer said in the YouTube video on his official page, allegedly quoting his accuser. “A text Lindsey Hill sent to a friend before she ever even met me. ‘What should I steal?’ she asked another, in reference to visiting my house for the first time. The answer? ‘Take his money.’” The now 30 year old Hill began seeing Bauer, engaging in a consensual sexual relationship in the spring of 2021 after the Cy Young Award winning pitcher signed with his hometown team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, on a then record setting 3 year $102 million deal which was good for $34 Million annually. In the middle of his first year as a Dodger, the false accusation by Hill was reported by every major media outlet. In her claims, Hill stated that Bauer had “assaulted her on two different occasions at his home in Pasadena, California, during what she said began as consensual sexual encounters.” Hill then uploaded images of her that were clearly doctored where she looked like she was brutally beaten by the pitcher

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred – a man who apparently takes false accusations against someone he finds “annoying” more seriously than widespread cheating by an organization from 2017-2019 while calling the World Series Trophy “a piece of metal” – immediately put Bauer on administrative leave and then handed down a record setting 324 game suspension on the phenom pitcher following the 2021 season despite Bauer claiming his innocence and never formally being charged for sexual assault. The suspension was reduced to 194 games following a grievance being filed by MLB’s Players Association on Bauer's behalf. A three-person panel headed by independent arbitrator Martin Scheinmanstarted hearing the case last May. In a ruling that came in December of last year, Scheinman upheld a 194game suspension rather than Manfred's intended 324-game penalty and reinstated Bauer immediately. After the courts found that Bauer did not break any laws and that Hill had apparently made the whole thing up due to evidence produced by the pitcher and his legal team that included videos of Hill laying in bed next to him after one of the alleged “beatings” where she looked normal and healthy, Bauer would turn around and sue Hill in April of 2022 for defamation. This led to her counter suing for “sexual battery” several months later. Hill’s request for a restraining order against Bauer was ultimately denied by a judge, with prosecutors also declining to charge Bauer for the alleged crimes. While this week’s settlement was completed outside of court “with no money exchanged
between the two parties,” according to reports. Hill is set to receive $300,000 from her insurance company and she will not receive a single dime from Bauer himself. Bauer will also be dropping his initial lawsuit against Hill for defamation following these settlements. In maintaining his innocence, Bauer on Monday released a series of text messages and video purportedly obtained in the discovery process that appear to exonerate him from wrongdoing via his official YouTube account where he normally posts videos on how he prepares for starts and what the life of a professional baseball player entails. In Bauer’s reaction video, the alleged text messages indicate Hill had planned to accuse Bauer of sexual misconduct prior to meeting him. “So how might that work? ‘I’m going to his house Wednesday.’ she said, ‘I already have my hooks in. you know how I roll.’” Bauer said, reading text messages between Hill and a friend prior to the first time she went over to the pitcher’s house in California following the ‘What should I steal?’ texts, “Then, after the first time we met, “Net worth is 51 mil” she said. ‘b-tch, you better secure the bag,’ was the response. But how was she going to do that? ‘Need daddy to choke me out,’ she said. ‘being an absolute wh-re to try to get in on his 51 million,’ read another text. Then, after the second time we met, former [San Diego] Padres pitcher Jacob Nix told her ‘you gotta get this bag.’ ‘I’ll give you $50,000,’ Lindsey replied. Her AA sponsor asked her at one point, ‘do you feel a tiny bit guilty?’ ‘Not really,’ she replied. Bauer further claimed in his video that his suit allowed his legal team to uncover
“critical information” that was “deliberately and unlawfully concealed” from him and his lawyers, including a video Hill filmed of herself lying in bed, smirking, alongside a sleeping Bauer. Hill took the video “the morning after she claims she was brutally attacked, emotionally traumatized, and desperate to get away from me,” Bauer said. “I think it paints a pretty clear picture of what actually happened the evening of May 15 and why the video was originally concealed from us.” Now that Bauer’s name is cleared of any wrongdoing, it’s about time everyone apologizes to him for dragging his name through the mud, especially the Media and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers would release Bauer on January 6th of this year and released a statement on why he had to be cut due to “Committing acts of domestic violence” despite never being found guilty. “The Dodgers organization believes that allegations of sexual assault or domestic violence should be thoroughly investigated, with due process given to the accused.” Read the statement by the Dodgers Front Office on January 6th, “From the beginning, we have fully cooperated with Major League Baseball's investigation and strictly followed the process stipulated under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Two extensive reviews of all the available evidence in this case one by Commissioner Manfred and another by a neutral arbitrator - concluded that Mr. Bauer's actions warranted the longest ever active player suspension in our sport for violations of this policy. Now
that this process has been completed, and after careful consideration, we have decided that he will no longer be part of our organization.” What many now find amusing about this is All-Star Pitcher Julio Urias, who was arrested and charged with domestic violence in both 2019 and 2023, has been a mainstay with the team despite the organization believing all cases should be taken seriously and players should be cut for making poor decisions, he is still on the roster and was a member of their 2020 World Series winning team. The Dodgers and Rob Manfred have been vocal about their dislike of Bauer’s Persona on the internet and his YouTube “vlogs” and they used these allegations to blackball him from the MLB. Major Media Outlets like The Athletic and ESPN ran stories painting Bauer as an evil man who was hated by every teammate he ever had while also treating the man like he was already guilty or this was an “open and shut case” because of the #MeToo movement that led to some women making false accusations of sexual assault against powerful men in order to get money from them while ruining their careers. This wasn’t the case in both scenarios as Lindsey Hill’s accusations were already proven fake and it ultimately cost Bauer tens of millions of dollars due to his suspensions and legal fees. It was also proven false that he was hated by his teammates as many of them grew to like Bauer and he seems to maintain positive relationships with former teammates like Jose Ramirez and Mike Clevanger, who played with him during his stint in Cleveland. Bauer, 32, is currently pitching overseas for the Nippon Professional Baseball’s Yokohama DeNA BayStars and he has proven that he can still go with the best as he was named an All-Star in his first professional season since 2021. He holds a 10-4 record as of August 27th – his last start before injuring his hip – while owning a stellar 2.75 earned run average. MLB Scouts should come knocking on Bauer’s door following his triumphant return to baseball and, when the inevitable happens, his return to the states will be one that will steal every headline in the sports world.

Sayville Soccer Season is Over Amid Hazing Allegations
By Nick Cipolla The fall is always an exciting time for Sayville High School Sports as the Golden Flashes tend to always be in contention to win some big games. However, the recent athletics news that broke late last week is not a moment the Athletic Department will be boasting about anytime soon. The Sayville Boys Varsity Soccer team learned late last week that their season would come to an end after multiple sources have reported that a culture of “systematic and ongoing” hazing that in past years contained elements of racism and antisemitism. Sayville School District Superintendent Mark Ferris wrote a letter to the parents, which was obtained by Newsday, that revealed younger players on the Sayville High School team were subjected to the abuse
throughout this season by the upperclassmen. “This decision was made as a result of findings from an internal investigation that uncovered members of our Varsity Soccer team participating in hazing activities off campus that included acts of violence and humiliation towards younger players on our team.” Ferris said in his letter to parents that was obtained by Newsday. “There is evidence that this behavior extended beyond this season and included additional behaviors in past years that included forms of racist and antisemitism towards certain team members. This is not a team culture that we can condone or accept as a school district.” The letter written by Ferris also claims that some students were the “aggressors” in all of this and had made remarks that
would victimize teammates who were not comfortable reporting the abuse to school officials. Despite this going on for “Years” according to Ferrris, their findings only have come about now and the district feels that forfeiting the remaining games is the right thing to
do. Something like this could potentially send a message to future players and coaches that this kind of behavior won’t be tolerated and the district won’t hesitate to suspend operations if necessary. “While these events took place off school grounds, it is
our obligation as a school district to hold those who participated accountable and to send a strong message to our entire school community that hazing, discrimination, bullying, racism or antisemitism of any kind, in any possible form or Forum, is completely unacceptable and intolerable.” Said Ferris in his letter. The Boys Varsity Soccer Team at Sayville High School already had a losing record prior to the investigation and only had two games left before the end of the season. It also remains unclear at this time if any players have received or will face any more punishment from the district for their actions. The South Shore Press reached out to Ferris and the athletics department for comment and were not given any further information on the situation.
NHL Bans Theme-Night Gear, Including Pride Night and Pride Tape By Nick Cipolla The National Hockey League is finally back with on ice action following an eventful offseason filled with plenty of headlines. Right as the first puck was dropped in the opening game, the league announced some new rules that ban on-ice theme night gear, barring clubs from having players wear rainbow sweaters or use multicolored tape on sticks during Pride Night, for example, officials confirmed Tuesday. The NHL has been a league that has dealt with the turmoil of being forced to have these Pride Night’s as the woke mob is making everyone pander to the lowest common denominator and push for LGBTQIA+ tolerance in a sport where 93.14% of the workforce identifies as straight or heterosexual. The move by the league was first reported last Monday by the LGBTQ news site Outsports, following a 2022-23 season when a handful of players – including Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov and then-San Jose Sharks goaltender James Reimer – declined to participate in their clubs' Pride Night celebrations. The NHL has seen plenty of other players and even a handful of teams opt out of the pride nights due to these events conflicting with players' religious beliefs. League Commissioner Gary Bettman has voiced his frustrations previously with the reception of the pride night events and how players have decided to opt out of the night that celebrates a small fraction of Hockey Fans.
“That’s just become more of a distraction from really the essence of what the purpose of these nights are,” Bettman said back in June of 2023. “We’re keeping the focus on the game. And on these specialty nights, we’re going to be focused on the cause.” Bettman finally has come to his senses and has said enough is enough as he has decided to ban all the special events that include the pride nights indefinitely with a chance these changes become permanent. In regards to the rule change, commissioner Bettman said that the league's new policy has been "terribly misunderstood and misportrayed" and that the NHL still encourages "specialty nights where groups of all different types are honored and consciousness is raised." The NHL also donates funds to groups involved in the specialty nights throughout the league year and beyond. “What happened last year was that the issue of who wanted to wear a particular uniform on a particular night overshadowed everything that our clubs were doing.” Said Bettman to ESPN this week on the ban. “So what we said, instead of having that distraction and having our players have to decide whether or not they wanted to do something or not do something and be singled out, we said, 'Let's not touch that.’” Kurt Weaver, the chief operations officer of the You Can Play Project, told NBC News this week that a league-wide memo went to clubs Thursday discussing the ban.
Weaver’s “You Can Play” project is a partner of the NHL and its "Hockey Is for Everyone" campaign, aimed at stomping out homophobia and spreading the game to underrepresented groups. These events included Pride Nights where teams would have LGBTQIA+ themed warmups, tape on their sticks, and other forms of pride paraphernalia. “When you start to take away what is our most visible representations, what carries the most weight in messaging, is those heroes that you see on the ice standing up for what they believe and what they believe is right,” Weaver said about his failed attempt to “stop homophobia” in Hockey. “And removing those from the ice is a tough one.” Despite his failed attempt to try and push the LGBTQIA+’s anticatholic and unorthodox message in a sport where most players practice some form of Orthodox Catholic or Christianity – which is a religion that frowns upon being homosexual – Weaver remained stubborn on the idea that the Pride Night’s failed. He doubled down by saying the league made a big mistake by discarding the event and thanked the league for years of effort by the league for fighting against “Homophobia” in Hockey. “It’s hard to reconcile that right now, with decisions like this. But I see too many great things that the clubs do, that hockey in general does. It’s success after success," Weaver said. "But that right now is clouded by a really poor decision that’s going to overtake all that good work.”
Some players around the league – including superstars like Oilers Forward Connor McDavid – and other contributors to these events that promote homosexuality in the sports world made some statements that were published on ESPN’s instagram page this week. “The league has used language in recent days that would prohibit the tape from any proximity to NHL hockey.” Said the creators of Pride Tape, “We hope the league - and teams will again show commitment to this important symbol of combating homophobia.” McDavid and Boston Bruins Forward Brad Marchand were pretty clear that they were on the same page as Kurt Weaver when it came to the banishment of these event’s that the NHL holds, including Pride Night. “I’ve expressed (my) disappointment in not being able to wear the various jerseys or the tapes,” said McDavid. “Whether that's Pride tape or pink tape. Is it something that I'd like to see back
into place one day? Certainly.” “I truly believe in my heart that if there's something you support, then you support. Then if not, it's OK to have your own beliefs and feel your own way about things.” Said Marchand to ESPN, “But to be pushed to do something you don't want to do, or to be banned from something you do believe in, there's gotta be a line where we can all have our beliefs and support each other.” The two Canadians feel that the NHL is acting a bit extreme but if the league is suffering from negative press for players not wearing gear that panders to the lowest percentage of employers and fans due to religious beliefs, they should just cut their losses while also doing damage control. The damage control will unfortunately cost the league all of these event nights like ones that may support different causes like Cancer Awareness, but if it meant getting rid of the PR nightmare that was Pride Night, the league seems okay with doing this.

As championship season is coming closer by the day, some of Long Island’s best cross country runners made the trip to the Historic Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale to compete against some of the best high school runners the region had to offer at the Manhattan Invitational.
Westhampton Beach would walk out of the meet boasting two individual champions from the mee as Junior Lily Strebel – who is in her first year of competition – and Senior Trevor Hayes would claim victory in their respective races.
In what will most likely be the final invitational of the season for most of these athletes before they compete in the races that matter, teams from over Suffolk County spent their Saturday afternoon trying to get one last fast race in before the Division Championship

As another October presses on, New York Yankees fans are forced to watch what could have been in full throttle in front of their faces. In many ways those Yankee faithful are watching Brian Cashman's biggest failure on a grand stage and it incites an already angry fanbase. Bryce Harper should have been a Yankee. When Bryce Harper was a free agent, just a few years ago, he was already a superstar and a lifelong Yankee fan. He had expressed since his teenage years, and never hid from the comments that he made where one of his professional goals was to wear the pinstripes. Instead Brian Cashman openly stated that signing Harper was out of the question, he never even made a call or offer, and Harper playing first base was simply

Bringing Soto on won't be easy, and an extension won't be cheap, but he is worth it. The Yankees, or more so Cashman, dropped the ball on Machado and Harper, he can't drop the ball on Soto. Now is the time to show the world what the Evil Empire can do, and forget the small Josh Donaldson type moves. Go get the big prize, New York deserves it.

Qualifying for Homecare Medicaid

Q: How can I qualify for Home-Care Medicaid? A:
Communit y M e d i c a i d , c o m m o n l y referred to as Home-Care Medicaid, pays for a variety of medical services that can enable individuals who require assistance with activities of daily living (e.g. dressing, bathing, toileting, and feeding) to continue to live in their homes. Importantly, Community Medicaid will pay for personal home-care aids, up to a determined number of hours per week, who can assist with these activities of daily living. To be eligible for Community Medicaid, one must meet the applicable income and asset limits. In 2023 the asset allowance for an individual applicant is $30,182 and the monthly income allowance is $1,677/month. As to the non-applicant spouse, the Community Spouse Resource
Allowance (CSRA) is $148,620 and their income allowance is $3,715 per month (and a portion of the applicant’s income may be used to help reach this limit). Any income in excess of the monthly limit will have to be paid to the Department of Social Services each month as a contribution toward any care received. To avoid this, an elder law attorney can create a Pooled Income Trust. Pooled Income Trusts are trusts that are established and managed by non-profit organizations for the benefit of people with disabilities. Medicaid applicants can deposit any excess income into a Pooled Income Trust each month so as to stay under the monthly income limit. Then, the Medicaid recipient can submit bills for household expenses to the Pooled Income Trust which will draw from the excess income that has been deposited.
It is important to use the monies in the Pooled Income Trust because when the applicant passes away, the balance goes to the charity. It is worthing noting that certain assets are exempt for purposes of determining eligibility i.e. the asset won’t count toward the $30,182 asset allowance. Specifically, the primary residence of the applicant is exempt up to a maximum value of $1,033,000. However, while the primary residence is exempt for purposes of determining eligibility, Medicaid has the right to place a lien on the property to recover the value of services provided if the applicant is not survived by a spouse and the property is part of the applicant’s probate estate (meaning the property passes through the applicant’s Will or by intestacy if there is no Will).
