By Barbara LaMonica Expressing gratitude to the entire community for the passage of the referendum and for sticking with the promise of a better economic and environmental future for the area, Suffolk County Legislator Jim Mazzarella announced that construction of the Forge River Watershed Sewer District project will begin in mid- November. The project received the green light to move forward and will include approximately 1,889 residences and 150 merchants. “I speak to residents everyday whose hopes were fading with the amount of time this process took and when I was elected the first thing I told my staff and colleagues was that this

Legislator Nick Caracappa Donates School Supplies to Middle Country School District This week, Suffolk County Legislator Nick Caracappa (Fourth District) visited Eugene Auer Elementary School in Lake Grove, a school supply collection site for Middle Country Central School District. Moira Kochis, the District’s donation coordinator, arranged to meet with Caracappa to accept a large array of school supplies collected from his drive this past August. “On behalf of the MCCSD Social Work Department, thank for your donations of school supplies,” Ms. Kochis commented. “We greatly appreciate Legislator Caracappa’s generosity and thoughtfulness. In Suffolk County's 8th LD: Piccirillo Seeks Reelection By Barbara LaMonica
Suffolk County 8th District Legislator Anthony Piccirillo is seeking reelection to serve a second two year term. He will appear on the Republican and Conservative lines of the ballot. The 8th LD is comprised of Fire Island, the Brookhaven portions of Holtsville and Lake Ronkonkoma, and portions of Medford and Blue Point. Piccirillo cites a number of pieces of legislation that have been passed during his short tenure serving on the Legislature, including the red light camera tickets legislation which creates a payment plan for motorists to remit their ticket infractions without losing their vehicles. "This was especially important during the pandemic that people have their cars to be able to go to and from work, so we wanted

to make sure residents didn't lose their cars," Piccirillo said. Another law Piccirillo pointed out as significant, is legislation passed that ensures newlyelected lawmakers a smooth transition of powers during a change of administrations.

Legislator Mazzarella took an opportunity to meet with Suffolk County Probation Officers and their families at his District Office in Mastic to show his appreciation to them for organizing and participating in a charity bike ride to commemorate the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and to benefit the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. “I am always happy to recognize Suffolk County Employees who go above and beyond for charities such as these.” Said Legislator Jim Mazzarella. “What makes this recognition especially gratifying is that the money raised went to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in support of true national heroes.” This event, which Supervising Probation Officer Daniel Buckley organized, originated with a group of Probation Officers who annually participated in the Babylon Town Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride. Due to COVID restrictions, they were forced to change plans and organized their own ride at the Veterans Memorial Park in Calverton. Between the Probation Officers and their families, there were roughly 60 participants. Through the money raised by donations for riding, a generous check from the Probation Officers Association, and contributions from people who did not attend, this event raised $4,250 for the Tunnel to Towers
Foundation. Additionally, this year, an anonymous benefactor tripled all donations and boosted the Probation Officer’s contribution to $12,750. The Tunnel to Towers Foundation is a non-profit organization that honors the sacrifice of Firefighter Stephen Siller, who laid down his life to save others on September 11, 2001. They also honor our military and first responders who continue to make the supreme sacrifice of life and limb for our country. They host several fundraising events throughout the year and offer many programs that support the families of victims of September 11, 2001, and our men and women in the armed forces. One participant who overcame much adversity to complete his ride and support his fellow riders was seven-

of the most humbling experiences is to be able to serve people, and I enjoy what I do every single day, " Piccirillo said. Another important effort Piccirillo said he is focused on, centers around protecting the environmentally sensitive Fire Island. "I have been doing a lot of work with Legislator (Steve) Flotteron on Fire Island by creating Commission to study how to disperse of wastewater and developing clean water infrastructure," Piccirillo explained. Piccirillo served on the executive board of the Bohemia Civic Association until he was elected to the Legislature two years ago. He is a member of the East End Republican Club, and is Sergeant at Arms for the Suffolk County Young Republicans Club.

Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Daniel P. Losquadro and Councilwoman Jane Bonner have announced the completion of a six-road paving project in Miller Place and Sound Beach. Prior to paving Daisy Lane, Gully Landing Road, Lower Rocky Point Road from North Country
Road to Woodhull Landing Road, Passway Lane, Sunset Lane and Woodhull Landing Road, crews installed new sidewalks and ADA-compliant handicap ramps on Lower Rocky Point Road across from the North Country Road Middle School. In addition, crews are in the process of rebuilding the traffic signal at the intersection of Lower Rocky
Superintendent Losquadro said, “This paving project was completed in the vicinity of two schools in the Miller Place School District – the North Country Road Middle School and Andrew Muller Primary School,” said Superintendent Losquadro. “The roadways that have been resurfaced, along with the new sidewalks, will ensure students, staff and local residents will enjoy a smoother, safer ride.” Councilwoman Bonner said, “I thank Superintendent Losquadro and the Highway Department staff for their efforts to make our roads safer and easier to travel. SUFFOLK CLOSEUP BY KARL GROSSMAN The U.S. House of Representatives has just passed a measure calling for a federal investigation into any link between the “possible weaponization of ticks” by the U.S. military and Lyme disease. Several books and articles have found that there is such a link and have pointed to activities on Plum Island, a mile-anda-half off Long Island’s Orient Point. Lyme disease is named for Old Lyme, Connecticut, 10 miles from Plum Island, where it was first identified. The sponsor of the measure is Representative Chris Smith, a Republican in his 21st term in the House and considered the dean of the New Jersey delegation in the House. Lyme disease has long been a focus; he is co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Lyme Disease Caucus. His bill, in the form of an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act, was part of a package of amendments to the annual National Defense Authorization Act which passed the House by a vote of 360 to 66 on September 23. It has been sent to the U.S. Senate for its consideration. This is the third year in a row such a measure introduced by Mr. Smith has passed in the House. But neither, in 2019 and 2020, received Senate approval. “Americans deserve the Truth: Did DOD Weaponize Ticks with Lyme

Disease?” was the headline on September 22 in the Congressional Record as the Smith measure came before the House. The Congressional Record is the official account published by Congress of its proceedings.
McDonald saying documents it obtained through the U.S. Freedom of Information Act declared the mission of the laboratory originally set up by the Army on Plum Island was to work on biological warfare to be directed against animals. The Newsday story began: “A 1950s military plan to cripple the Soviet economy by killing horses, cattle and swine called for making biological warfare weapons out of exotic animal diseases at a Plum Island laboratory, now-declassified Army records reveal.”
The piece started with comments made by Mr. Smith: “Mr. Speaker, in the spirit of transparency and accountability my amendment directs the General Accountability Office, GAO, to probe whether the Department of Defense ever weaponized ticks with Lyme disease or any other dangerous pathogen.” “For years,” it went on, “books and articles have been written credibly asserting that significant research at Fort Detrick,” an Army facility in Maryland, long headquarters for U.S. biological warfare activities, and “Plum Island, and elsewhere, was conducted to turn ticks into bioweapons.” Mr. Smith cited a 2019 book, Bitten: The Secret History of Lyme Disease and Biological Weapons by Stanford University science writer Kris Newby. The book “includes interviews with Dr. Willy Burgdorfer, the researcher who is credited with discovering Lyme disease,” he says. “It turns out that Dr. Burgdorfer was a bioweapons specialist. The interviews, combined with access to Dr. Burgdorfer’s file, reveal that he and other bioweapons

specialists stuffed ticks with pathogens in a quest to cause severe disability, disease and death.” “If the investigation concludes our government’s bioweapons program did not contribute to the proliferation of Lyme, we turn the page,” Mr. Smith’s speech concluded. “And if it did, hopefully this investigation and research will contribute to a cure.” A 1982 book linking Plum Island to experiments with ticks and Lyme disease was The Belarus Secret: The Nazi
Connection in America by John Loftus, an attorney who specialized in pursuing Nazis for the Office of Special Investigations of the U.S. Department of Justice. A 2004 book about the Plum Island Animal Disease Center—which became a national best-seller—Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government’s Secret Germ Laboratory was authored by Michael Carroll, also an attorney, and made a similar connection. In 1993, Newsday ran an extensive article by investigative reporter John
In 1995, then U.S. Representative Michael Forbes of Quogue made a surprise visit to the Plum Island Animal Disease Center to demand all records on experiments with ticks. He was accompanied by Mr. McDonald and me. Mr. Forbes represented Suffolk’s lst Congressional District. (He was a Republican later to switch to the Democratic Party.) The center’s then director, Dr. Harley Moon, under intensive questioning by Mr. Forbes, said that “we don’t have any paperwork on that.” Back in Washington, Mr. Forbes continued his pursuit but without success. Fire Everyone!
BY TOM BARTON Disappointment. That is a term that the New York Yankees fans have come to know more now than maybe anytime in history. It's one thing to be bad, which they were during the late 60's and early 90's, but something entirely different to be a perennial disappointment. The Yankees opened the season at +550 to win the World Series, which represented the 2nd shortest odds in baseball, first in the American League. They also missed their perceived win total of 95 1/2, as well as their 23 to 1 odds to win the AL, and their -200 odds to win the AL East. Bettors and Yankees fans all felt the same this season, which seems to be a recurring theme. The solution I present to Yankees fans is this ... fire everyone! No, seriously. Tear this thing down. The Yankees have a few bright spots in Aaron Judge, Gerrit Cole (despite
the Wild Card performance), Jordan Montgomery, Johnny Lasagna, Luis Severino, Chad Green and we can handle giving DJ another crack at it. Resign Rizzo and yeah we all have to live with Gallo. That's pretty much it. Tear it down and bring the young kids in. Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon were calculated risks that ended how we assumed. Often injured, aging starters, who show glimpses of hope but overall have disappointing seasons should not be on this roster. We can also wave goodbye to volatile and high priced closers, who have off the field issues and advancing ages. Yeah, I say get rid of Chapman also. I'm also way past done with a now 28 year old catcher who hits 20-25 homers and bats less than his weight. Oh yeah and Sanchez is a butcher behind the plate and doesn't hustle. The same TM

In this very young NFL season we will have completed 5 weeks as you sit down and read this. Can you take trends from the early going and start making predictions? Not always, but I do like what I see so far from Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals. In sprinting out to a 3-1 start after Week #4’s victory over Jacksonville, the Bengals already have a huge victory over the divisional rival Pittsburgh Steelers. But it always draws attention when the top overall pick from the previous two NFL drafts go head to head. Trevor Lawrence came up short in Week #4’s matchup but Burrow shined. Cincinnati has been very rushing heavy here in the early going. This offensive line is not the team’s greatest strength. Joe Mixon has done much of the heavy lifting and looked good but Burrow was 25-32 in Week #4 with 348 yards passing and a 132.8 passer rating. He looked great in the win over Pittsburgh and the Pittsburgh defense is always terrific. Burrow’s opponent from Jacksonville looked like he was getting more and more comfortable although Jacksonville is now 0-4. Still, Trevor Lawrence is getting the playing time and now has 4 NFL games under his belt. 31% of his passes were graded by ProFootball Focus as uncatchable in his first 3 games.

can be said about the overrated, underperforming shortstop. Or, is he a second baseman now? gleyber is still young, but his attitude and production say dangle him on the market. Gio has some value but soon no position. Hicks is a constant IR stint waiting to happen. Brett Gardner might have graduated high school with Betty White at this point and Voit can't stay healthy either. That leaves me to Stanton. Sell high, and sell quickly. When he's healthy he's been productive, but as he ages we can't expect many more good seasons and that contract is an anchor. Sell high, and goodbye. I doubt you can say sell high on Aaron Boone, but cutting bait should be the next move. The problem is he was only doing what he was told to do. Fire Cashman, and while you're at it fire Hal too! Okay, so we can't do that, but the problem is

That number dropped to 19% in the loss to the Bengals. But the high ratio of uncatchable passes is not a worrying stat from Lawrence. His average depth of target was 9.7 yards down the field, one of the league’s higher marks. Balls that are thrown deeper down the field stay in the air longer allowing defenders to close the distance to the intended target. It is very common to see young QB’s improve on this statistic with more experience. Lawrence’s 17-24 with 204 passing yards and a 96.5 passer rating may have just turned the corner for his season from struggling in over his head QB to a young QB learning the ropes. His Week #5 needs to be watched closely. If we see him continue to show a quick 2.29 seconds time to throw on his straight dropbacks you will also find yourself with some enticing possibilities in your DFS lineups as the season progresses. I will be reporting back. The 2021 baseball season will have closed out its regular season as you sit down to read this and for those of us in dynasty leagues, you may be already sitting down and doing your rankings and lists for the 2022 season. Now the process of deciding who your keepers will be for the 2022 drafts begins and a lot of

• Scott Barlow with Kansas City seems to be a solid bet to get saves in 2022 but beware of Paul Sewald in Seattle. The 2021 numbers were terrific on Sewald but they came out of nowhere when looking at his career stats and be on the lookout for Seattle teammate Andres Munoz. After an 18 month recovery from Tommy John surgery, Munoz has his 99 mph fastball back and closed out the season mowing down batters at the Triple A level. Seattle chose not to bring him up so late in the season and wants him to concentrate on his competition in spring training of 2022. I made a late season waiver acquisition on him and plan to use a Keeper slot on him.
soul searching begins. Some interesting thoughts…… • Giovanny Gallegos is closing out the season as the closer for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals finished the season with a fantastic winning streak and Gallegos was right there getting pressure filled saves. The job was yanked from Alex Reyes who was stellar for the first 2/3 of the season but in the end was surrendering way too many walks. The
job looks like it is there for Gallegos in 2022. He has played his way onto many teams’ list of keepers for next year. • Some interesting names cropped up in 2021 that seem to be reliable and worth a shot to protect for 2022 with low risk. Ryan Pressley, Jordan Romano and Emmanuel Clase had very reliable 2021 seasons. They are worthy of using a Keeper slot on.
It never fails to amaze that once the season ends and the waiver picks close out, a report gets written about a prospect that got past you during the regular season. Though I remain vigilant and do my share of reading about prospects there is a guy that you failed to notice in time. For me this season, that player is a pitcher named George Kirby who pitches for Seattle. By the end of the season, Kirby had climbed up to Baseball America’s #12 prospect with little fanfare. He hits triple digits in velocity with pinpoint control. I am sure I will be writing about him next spring.

Most of us have heard of a tragic story of some poor soul giving it all up by ending their life in the garage. Close the door, start the car and wait for a precious few moments. For many of us, that is all the thinking we ever do about carbon monoxide poisoning – which can be fatal. Of all the dangers that the mariner confronts, carbon monoxide poisoning is perhaps the most dangerous since it is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Unarmed, you will never see it coming. Given its dangers, please read on.
What Creates Carbon Monoxide?
Burning hydrocarbons, plain and simple. Diesel, gasoline, propane – all are hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide (CO) is a natural by-product of burning them. You cannot tune your engine not to create CO. You can create CO-safe environments around and in your boat but you cannot defy the laws of chemistry. Your engine doesn’t even have to be the one that is on. Your neighbor at the dock has his generator on to power the A/C and TV – and his exhaust is wafting into your cabin. Also, it could be your engine but you think that you are immune because you haven’t enclosed your cockpit. You have only enclosed the windshield and side

panel areas, leaving the aft wide open… well, called the “station wagon effect”, an area that is enclosed on 3 sides creates a vacuum behind it as it pushes ahead – and it is sucking CO into the “cup” it has created.
How to prevent it?
You are in that cup… Even more tragic are the circumstances where (young?) boaters engage in “teak surfing”… And the smell of it isn’t what is killing you. What you smell is unburned hydrocarbons. What you can’t smell is carbon monoxide …
What is it and how do you know you are succumbing to it?
Carbon monoxide (CO) kills you by attaching itself to your blood cells in a way that keeps your blood from picking up fresh oxygen as it passes through your lungs. You essentially suffocate slowly while surrounded by air. Little by little, the CO hitches a ride on your blood cells until there are no seats left on the lifesustaining bus (your blood) for the oxygen to sit. As it happens, you start to get headaches, muscle aches, excessive fatigue and nausea. As I tell my seamanship students, “If you are starting to feel like you are coming down with the flu, but you don’t have the sniffles, get out of there! You may be dying of carbon monoxide

What do you do now!
Say you enter your cruiser, and you find a crew man lying unconscious on the sole of the cabin. The manual actually says that you are first to try to isolate the source of the fumes, extinguish them and proceed to get your mate to fresh air (to start the cleansing cycle of kicking the CO’s out of their seats and replacing them with O’s!) Here is where I am coming from. This strategy could cause two people to die from carbon monoxide poisoning, not one. IF you know that the only source of CO poisoning is YOUR engine, and you can kill it in a virtual flash, do it – or

Remember, it could be your slipmate’s engine that is polluting your air. Also, the cabin has built up some degree of CO concentration. It may be a deadly amount and you don’t have a chemistry kit in your pocket to test it. You are gambling with your life. You certainly can [1] grab a lungful of fresh air from outside, hold your breath and [2] try to drag the person out of the cabin. If you can’t, [3] drop them and run for help. If you can get them out, but they are not breathing, give them artificial respiration (sometimes called CPR) and

When the first settlers learn to farm corn, it was with menhaden that they fertilized
the seeds. When the whaling industry reached its height, it was outweighed by menhaden oil. Menhaden ruled the ocean from the middle of the food chain, they were the dominant prey of most large predatory fish. They swarmed the sea in schools several miles long and millions of fish deep. Whether you are a sport fisher or just local history buff, this is a fascinating stuff. This program will be presented by a Fire Island National Seashore Park Ranger.

Veterans Helped by Clergy
VETERANS WAY BY REV. FREDERICK MILLER. PH.D. Many of our veterans at home or just returning home suffer with guilt over something they did or saw while deployed. The problem is that the guilt not only does not go away but over time gets stronger if not resolved. With some veterans who came home, found a job and raised a family the guilt was buried in the back of their mind until they retired or the family nest emptied, then the guilt became stronger. Unfortunately the veteran may be afraid to seek help, or does not know where to find that help. However, help is not only available but is free and that help will not report or tell anyone else your problem. When you were on active duty the one person you could trust and always go to for personal problems or mental help was the chaplain. Now as a veteran the person who can help with your problem is the clergy.

The local house of worships’ clergy should be more then willing to help. If for some reason you do not want to see him, then the chaplains at the VA hospital in Northport are there for you. I can assure you that the chaplains at the hospital have worked with many other veterans that suffered the same problems that you are suffering from, and so have I. Self medication such as alcohol or drugs almost always cause the problems to get worse, and can causes numerous other problems that can be even more difficult to help then the one that led to the self medication to start with. In many cases self mediation leads to total isolation, divorce, and other problems. It has never solved the problem. Many of the guilt problems that

veterans suffer from are based on the things taught that are right or wrong, good or bad as they were growing up. When you entered the military service and were deployed you may have been forced to break

The Archangel Sandalphon
OF MEN & ANGELS BY DOMINICK FORTE Like Metatron, the Archangel Sandalphon’s name ends in -on instead of -el, signifying his origin as a human prophet. Sandalphon was the Old Testament prophet Elijah, who ascended into heaven at the end of his human life, just as Metatron did. Metatron presides over the entrance to the spheres of the Kabbalah’s Tree of Life and Sandalphon presides over its exit. In Sandalphon’s human existence, Elijah was the one Jesus was compared to when he asked his disciples, “Who do people say I am?” This may be because Elijah was said to be a precursor of the coming Messiah. Although not explicitly referred to in scripture, some of the earliest sources (mainly from the Midrashic period) describe him as the “twin
brother” of Metatron. His name may be related to the Hebrew sandek meaning “godfather.” This would correspond to the tradition of a station held by Elijah with regard to evocation of the prophet in his capacity of being protector of unborn children. The functions associated with Sandalphon are being an intercessor for prayers between humans and God, helping determine the gender of a coming child, and acting as a patron to musicians. The Talmud and the Kabbalah describe Sandalphon as a deliverer of prayers from Earth to Heaven. He is uniformly depicted as being extremely tall. During Moses’ visit to the Third Heaven, he is said to have glimpsed Sandalphon and called him the

Sandalphon constantly works with the angels who continually sing praise to God, creating celestial music that provides protection for us all. Some theologians consider Sandalphon to be a hazan which is the Hebrew word for master musician. Therefore, he can be considered to be the patron of people who are hazans. Many musicians have benefitted from calling upon him for musical help. They ask for help playing a particular instrument or when learning a new song, especially if it is a challenging one. Sandalphon’s gracious and powerfully gentle presence can support us in developing a closer connection to God and our spirituality. He will help us feel God’s presence and the security of knowing that we are watched over and cared for.
