Man Sets Fire To Church Then Commits Suicide

Matthew Schneider a student at William Floyd High School, was recently honored at a luncheon held by the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics. Matthew, who is a senior, will be attending Brooklyn College in the Fall where he will be studying Early Childhood Education. He is an Eagle Scout, a trumpet player in the William Floyd Wind Ensemble, and a member of the William Floyd High School National Honor Society. Members of the Rotary were proud to honor Matthew, his family and teacher Bill Hennessey.

Devin Iorio, a senior in William Floyd High School was recently honored at a luncheon held by the Rotary Club of the Mastics and Shirley. He was chosen for his commitment to both academics and his extracurricular activities. While attending William Floyd High School, Devin played lacrosse all four years and throughout his high school career has been a member of both the mock trial team and the Youth and Government Program. Devin will be attending Trinity College, located in Hartford Connecticut in the Fall.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad and Arson Section detectives are investigating an incident during which a man set fire to a Center Moriches church, barricaded himself inside and committed suicide last Friday. A retired NYPD sergeant observed a man attempting to set a vehicle on fire in the parking lot of Saint John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, located at 25 Ocean Ave., and called 911 at approximately 1:30 p.m. Responding officers followed the man, John Beneventano, into the church and Benevento threw a gas can at officers and attempted to light them on fire. The officers retreated and were not injured. Beneventano then lit a match and started a fire inside the building. Officers retreated from the church and a perimeter was established outside. Emergency Service Section Officers and the Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to make contact. It was later determined that Beneventano, 42, of Shirley, committed suicide. It appears that no one

else was injured in the incident. “Once again our officers put their lives on the line to protect the residents of Suffolk County. I want to thank all the members of the Department who responded so effectively today,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini (shown above).

Raising Hope For Hannah Grace

 

Amy and Rob Galinsky found out their daughter,  Hannah  Grace, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare form of children’s cancer on February 15, 2017.  According to National  Cancer Institute,  rhabdomyosarcoma  is the most   common type of soft tissue   sarcoma in children. Rhabdomyosarcoma   usually begins in  muscles that are   attached to bones and that  help the body move.  Hannah   Grace’s treatment  is projected to last 42 weeks with  weekly chemotherapy  which began on    February 18, 2017  and radiation therapy  beginning in June. She   to make is expected  a full recovery in the     end. Her treatment has  not stopped her from enjoying such things like dancing, singing, Minnie Mouse,    playing outside, and making people laugh.    With the high expense of Hannah Grace’s treatment, the community came together to create a fundraiser in   her honor. The fundraiser was created by a friend of the   Galinski’s, Al Gabrow, second assistant chief volunteer in Mastic Beach Ambulance Company (MBAC), and his   wife, Danielle, who’s also a volunteer in MBAC.  Liz Noberto, a school teacher at Saint Anthony’s,

 

a volunteer in MBAC, and another contributor in the fundraiser, said, “This fundraiser was their [Al and Danielle Gabrow] ‘brainchild.’ Members from the MBAC and the Knights of Columbus in Mastic where it’s held are helping. They have been so generous and helpful.” The fundraiser will be held on Friday, June 23 from 7 pm - 11 pm at Knights of Columbus Columbian Club. Only 120 entrance tickets are available at the door for $15 for anyone 18-yearsold and up. The night will include: ● A 50/50 raffle ● A Chinese Auction ● Raffle tickets ($10 each) for cash prizes up to $500 for first, second, and third place ● Wine, soda, tap beer, dessert, and coffee Norberto said, “Anything to help out the family. It’s a night to have fun and be happy. Bishop McGann-Mercy Student Wins Diocesan Elementary School Invitational Math Bee

On Wednesday, May 17th, 7th grade student Micky Kalich of Mattituck took home first place as the champion of the Diocesan Elementary School Invitational Math Bee. Fellow 7th grader Connor Hipp of Center Moriches also participated, making it to the fourth round and a top-10 overall finish. The Math Bee took place at Kellenberg Memorial High School, where 25 finalists from grades 6 through 8, representing 13 different Catholic Elementary Schools across Long Island competed for the championship with their advanced skills in mathematics.

 Community Events & Happenings Troop 204 Eagle Scout Court of Honor Ceremony

On Saturday, May 6th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined Boy Scout Troop 204 at the Miller Place High School for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony to recognize Eagle Scouts David Argento, Marc Anthony DiFilippo, Erick Ecker, and James DiPersio. Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be earned by a Boy Scout, and only a small percentage of scouts are granted this rank after earning 21 merit badges and a lengthy review process. Outgoing Chief Santoli Recognized at Fire Department’s Installation Dinner Legislator Tom Muratore (Fourth L.D.) recently attended the Ronkonkoma Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner, held at the Watermill Inn in Smithtown. Outgoing Chief Jonathan Santoli was recognized for his service and given a proclamation from the legislator; Joseph Masarovich, Ernest Pinaud and Roy Plume were presented Certificates of Appreciation for fifty years of service to the department. “I‘d like to express my gratitude to Chief Santoli and the entire Ronkonkoma Fire Department,” commented Legislator Muratore. “These brave men and women volunteer their time and risk their own personal safety to protect our community. It is important to acknowledge such dedication and commitment, especially those who have served over fifty years,” concluded Muratore.

Bellport Student Signs Division II Scholarship

        Bellport’s Shannon Gibbons’ soccer   prowess earned her the title of Captain and    All-Conference accolades her senior year,   and  contributed to the family tradition of earning an athletic scholarship to play   soccer. Shannon will be attending Division   II Queen’s College where she will be joining   her sister Hailey. Shannon is the youngest  of ﬁve siblings who have all earned athletic   scholarships to play soccer in college.         

Students Take Top Honors at BNL Science Fair

Two Longwood Elementary School students earned top honors at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair last month. Ridge Elementary School second-grade student Alexis Hollingsworth received first place for her project, titled “Is artificial food dye harmful to the growth of living things.” The objective of the project was to find out if food dye affects the growth of living organisms. In addition to Alexis’s first place win, West Middle Island Elementary first-grade student Ryan Romano earned honorable mention for his project, titled “The Green Monster in the Waters of Long Island.” Ryan’s project observed how lawn fertilizers affect the growth of algae in our local waterways. More than 100 Suffolk County schools take part every year in BNL’s Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, compete.

Make A Preperation Plan For    Upcoming Hurricane Season  

            Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently reminded  residents to make necessary preparations for the upcoming

hurricane season as well as the potential impact of tropical     cyclone threats. In Suffolk County, hurricane season runs from    June through November. “The safety of our residents is our utmost priority in Suffolk    County,  and the unpredictable months during hurricane season are no exception,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.  “The trained and dedicated professionals in our Office of  Emergency Management are always reviewing and improving our emergency  operations to ensure that we are able to communicate the most up-to-date information to our residents during the most critical moments.”    “A key component to ensure safety throughout hurricane       season in a coastal community is having a strong personal     preparedness plan in place,” said Suffolk County Fire Rescue and  Emergency Services Commissioner Joe Williams. “Now is really  the best time for residents to create a hurricane preparedness plan  and ensure that you and your family are best equipped to remain  safe during this unpredictable time of year.”  Last week, the County Executive attended the 2017 National  Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Hurricane Awareness  Tour at Long Island MacArthur Airport. The event featured      experts including National Hurricane Center various hurricane  Director Dr. Rick Knabb, hurricane hunter mission specialist  Warren Madden, and United States Air Force and NOAA crew    members. Staff from county and local emergency management     offices, non-profit organizations such as the American Red and personnel from the Upton, NY NOAA National Cross,   Service forecast office were also in attendance. The Weather   event concluded with onboard tours of a USAF Reserve WC 130 hurricane hunter aircraft and the NOAA G-IV aircraft.  Forecasting    hurricanes and coastal storms are an important part of the Suffolk County’s preparation and response to an  approaching storm. The County coordinates with federal, state  and local  planning partners, including all towns and villages, to    ensure streamlined planning efforts. The Suffolk County Office  of Emergency Management also maintains a stockpile of critical   emergency supplies such as Meals Ready to Eat, bottled water,  generators,   and cots for sheltering. Residents can also sign up     to  receive CodeRed notifications, which allows Suffolk County  to rapidly communicate emergency messaging to the public.   Residents interested in signing up for CodeRed notifications      and to create a safety profile should visit the OEM tab at www.  suffolkcountyny.gov. Residents living in a flood zone should be prepared to  evacuate and follow the direction of authorities in the event of   an emergency.  For  more information on Suffolk County’s hurricane   preparedness measures, residents can call the Suffolk County      OEM at (631) 852-4904. Community Viewpoint Setting The Facts Straight

Dear Editor:

Ms. Rooney’s response to my letter from a few weeks back about Smith Point County Park is a complete farce, extremely misleading, and huge skewing of the facts. Yes, of course the county has an obligation to protect the piping plovers. No one is advocating that any harm come to the birds, only that they are safely relocated. And no, moving the plovers to a separate location is not against the law. As long as the county receives the necessary permit, it is perfectly legal and humane. Running around the beach with a giant net is one thing, getting an approved plan to relocate the nest is another entirely. It has been done before, and it can be done again if only Suffolk County actually took a moment to review all the options. I’m not saying developing and executing this plan would be easy, but it’s definitely worth looking into, and there’s no excuse for it not having been done already. Ms. Rooney’s response goes on to advocate for more protections for the dunes on the beach. I don’t think anyone would disagree with this point, but it’s completely besides the issue. We can protect the dunes and the plovers while still allowing access to the beach, but only if Suffolk County made the effort to reach out to Fish and Wildlife and find out. There is absolutely no harm in trying, and I still can’t believe nothing has been done yet. On top of all this, she goes after our federal officials by claiming they should be doing more to increase access. Last time I checked, Lee Zeldin is the only one who has been proactive on this issue. We support Smith Point beach with our tax dollars, and it’s about time these people got their heads out of the sand. Sincerely, William Toranzo

The Suffolk Legislature last week approved what can be a game-changing program for this county where 70 percent of homes use cesspools. Cesspools are nothing but holes in the ground in which waste is sent untreated with nitrogen a major component of what leaches out. The nitrogen impacts on groundwater and raises havoc in our surface waters causing brown and red tides and otherwise setting off eutrophication.    Calendar of Events        Boaters Maritime Festival In celebration   

Community Library Partners with Mastic Peninsula Historical Society to Preserve Woodhull Homestead Materials

of our rich maritime heritage, the Incorporated Village of  Port Jefferson in partnership with the New York Marine  Trade Association and the Town of Brookhaven, presents the 6th Annual Port Jefferson Boater’s Maritime Festival  June 3-4 2017. The festival will take place along the Port   Jefferson Village harborfront speciﬁcally showcase one of Long Island’s most popular   deep-water harbors. Boaters appreciate the prime location with easy access to local shops, restaurants, and entertainment just a short walk from the marina docks and     serve a perfect backdrop to a maritime festival. This two – day event will also host the Port Jeff Boat Show with over 50 boats of all types and will be on exhibit. Plus, dozens   of ﬁshing vendors will be on display at one of the island’s only outdoor shows.Sailing  demonstrations will take place on the harbor and a regatta is scheduled for Saturday at 2pm. Other Maritime attractions, museums, and organizations will be present along     with FREE open demos of kayaks and paddleboards for everyone to enjoy.  For more information visit portjeff.com. 

The paneling and pieces are intended to be incorporated for display into      a new Local History room planned for the future library project.     Ruth Floyd Woodhull, sister of William  Floyd, signer of the Declaration of    Independence, had the home built for her and  Daughter Elizabeth Woodhull Smith  after the original mansion was destroyed by fire in 1784. Nathaniel Woodhull was      By Kelly Platt buried nearby at the Nathaniel Woodhull Cemetery after his death in September     1776 due to injuries suffered by the British during the Battle of Long Island.   The paneling, pictured here, was originally removed from the home in 1938 and        brought to a mansion being built in Southampton. This Southampton mansion was     torn down and, as luck would have it, the paneling was returned to our area and,     with Brown Sugar and Butter until now, stored by the Village of Mastic Beach. home evaluation must be set up. Each MLTC that comes to the home will conduct an evaluation and propose a care plan that includes how many hours the Medicaid recipient would receive under their program. The care plan does not need to match the care plan established by GuildNet. For example, if the Medicaid recipient is currently receiving live-in care, the new MLTC might assess the Medicaid recipient and only offer 8 hours per day. This is a concern for many Medicaid recipients as a decrease in hours could result in devastating consequences. The good news is the Department of Health issued a statement stating that GuildNet must continue to provide the existing services until a smooth transfer can be completed to your new plan of choice. In other words, if the Medicaid recipient has not found a new MLTC with an appropriate care plan, GuildNet must continue to provide services until the transition is in effect and cannot stop as of June 1, 2017. However, with that said, current contracts with individual home care agencies are being dropped by GuildNet. This means that as of June 1, 2017, the Medicaid recipient may be required to switch to a different home health aide. During this stressful time, you should reach out to an elder law attorney in your area to discuss your individual situation and determine the best course of action in order to protect the Medicaid recipientâ€™s interests and current plan of care.

As a result of the publicity, State law was passed regulating the practice of companies which offer to sell you a copy of your deed. The law requires exact language to ensure that consumers are able to make informed decisions regarding the purchase of certiďŹ ed copies of property deeds that clearly delineates the fact that such copies are readily available for a much smaller fee from your County Clerkâ€™s OfďŹ ce. However, these record retrieval services companies continue to seek new customers and often canvass entire neighborhoods with solicitations offering to sell homeowners a certiďŹ ed copy of the deed to their home for a signiďŹ cantly higher cost then is available from our ofďŹ ce. As a result of these mailings, a good number of people have contacted my ofďŹ ce to question the legitimacy of these letters. Some of the most common questions can be summed up in the following statements; ďŹ rst there is no general sense of urgency to have a copy of your deed on hand at all times.
