The Town of Brookhaven’s Division of Economic Development and the Brookhaven Business Advisory Council (BBAC) will hold the sixth annual Job Fair on Tuesday, June 6 from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm in the second floor auditorium of Brookhaven Town Hall, located at One Independence Hill in Farmingville. The Brookhaven Job Fair gives job hunters the chance to meet face-to-face with representatives from companies in and around Brookhaven who are looking to hire qualified candidates for a wide range of positions. Last year, the event was attended by more than 600 people and representatives from over 100 companies. There are already more than 50 businesses registered to participate in industries ranging from banking to child care to engineering to sales. Attendees are encouraged to bring their resumes and be ready to talk with prospective employers. Nancy Burner: Elder Care Extraordinaire

 Story by Bob Chartuk  Most people don’t know that the largest growing segment  of the population is people over 90 years  old. This fact is not lost on Nancy Burner, Esq.   President and founder of Nancy Burner & Associ   ates PC, the largest all female elder law firm in the tri-state area. The firm concentrates on giving their   clients peace of mind in planning for the future. An  aging population requires individuals to prepare for    living  longer and accept the fact that they may need  assistance in the future.  Burner believes   that her firm, rooted  in the communities  where they live and  work, makes the    difference. If people  are to “age in place”  then there must be a   real sense of com munity, and there     must be more and  better services avail    able to keep seniors   and safe at engaged home. The firm uses   resources to put  its  on seminars in the  community on estate planning, elder law and non legal related topics like “hoarding” and “de cluttering” aimed at educating seniors. The firm also  partners with the local hospitals and medical professionals    in putting on smart talks for staff, volun    teers and individuals in the community.  With clients, it’s not uncommon for seniors to    come to the office with several family members. “I  try to involve all members of a family in the plan ning process so they understand the wishes and de sires of the client,” Burner points out. “Transparen cy, can sometimes avoid future conflicts if handled  correctly. A good estate plan is one that the clients  understand    and  which meets their needs both now and in the future,” Burner continued, noting that  she serves as a “counselor at law” and not just the  preparer of documents.    Many times,     decisions regarding taxes and esplanning, long term care, and who you should tate  choose   to handle your affairs if you are no longer  able can be overwhelming. It is imperative that the  attorney spends as much time as necessary to pro    accurate and comprehensive analvide an honest,  ysis of each person’s circumstances. “The goal is  to serve clients with compassion and respect” said      

Serving families since 1995, Burner and her staff, which has grown to 34 and includes her daughters Robin and Britt, are guided by a powerful vision: “We encourage each of our employees to be at their best, both professionally and personally, and this in turn empowers them to provide the highest level of service to our clients,” Burner said. “We have a unique culture made up of professionals who enjoy their work and are growing and prospering together,” said Michele Biggart, office manager. “This allows us to devote our full energies to our clients.” The firm provides three month’s maternity leave to staff so they can come back to work with a clear head. “We are mothers, daughters, sisters and wives,” Michele says. Burner is an advocate of Long Term Care insurance to cover nursing home expenses or care in the home, provided the clients can afford it and qualify medically. “With advances in medicine and technology, people are living longer and are requiring care as they age,” she said. “Having long term care coverage is just one of many tools in the tool box. Planning for the future requires alternatives and back up plans. A good estate plan accomplishes that goal.” From a basement office in 1995 with only one assistant, Burner has grown her practice into a premier elder care firm in the New York Metropolitan area. Her main office is in Setauket, with offices in Westhampton Beach where Robin, her daughter lives and in New York City where daughter Britt lives. The Manhattan office also serves clients who have second homes on Long Island. “Britt is very active in New York City as we are in the Three Village Area and Westhampton,” Burner pointed out. “We don’t just service the communities in which we live, we are a part of them as we participate in community events and support the many various activities that make people’s lives so rich and worthwhile. It is through the relationships we have formed over the years that we grow and find our best selves.”

10th Annual Summer Campaign To Combat Teen Obesity

            Wanda’s Weight Room Plus (WRP) announced  that it is launching its 10th annual “Free Teen Summer      Membership” program on May 22, 2017. Non-Members’  as well as WRP Members’ Teenagers ages 12 to 15 can sign up a free summer membership that will allow them  Club access from June 12, to August 31, 2017. William Floyd Student Artists Making Their Marks Across Long Island

 NYSATA  Recently, more than 90 students earned “Distinguished”  portfolio ratings, the highest available, at the annual New  York State Art Teachers Association Portfolio Project  Adjudication.  William Floyd also had the most students it ever has receive   a “perfect score,” which is an indication of a highly-effective and successful program. Students   provided their professional portfolios that included a selfportrait, a cultural connection piece, drawing from life and   several “student choice” pieces based on the level of each  student. For the adjudication, students had to present their work and discuss the inspiration behind the pieces, as well     as their  visual choices. “Experiences like these help develop self-conﬁdence  and independence, while at the same time providing   invaluable lessons for college and career readiness,” said  Theresa Bianco, Chairperson, Visual Arts, William Floyd  School District.  Congratulations to all the students and their teachers:    Erin Almeida, Marco Antenucci, Jillian Berner, Theresa  Bianco, Tina Eccleston, Linda Francis, Erica Licausi, Dale  Luongo, Timothy Kosta, Susan Plunket and Stephanie  Taisler!  These students and their teachers were also invited  to a Board of Education meeting to be recognized for their accomplishments.     Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts  William Floyd had several winners in various categories   at the annual Bay Area Friends of the Fine Arts (BAFFA)    Student Invitational Art Exhibit held at the Gillette House

William Floyd students won two ﬁrst place ribbons: junior Jennifer Suarez for her drawing/charcoal, titled “Looking at Old Things Differently” and senior Victoria Lentz for her watercolor painting “Dreaming All The Time.” There were also three second-place winners: junior Seyma Ayyildiz for her oil painting on wood, senior Jasmine Edwards for her ceramic painting piece and senior Tatum Gross who created a beautiful portrait in charcoal; and three third-place winners, Traivon Trent, Tylee Trent and Madison Hangley, and Mrs. Susan Plunket’s painting student Dabney Villasenor who received an honorable

mention. Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge William Floyd student artists in grades kindergarten through 12 from all schools were invited to participate in a “nature inspired” exhibit at the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge in Shirley. Wertheim kicked off the exhibition with a student reception and unveiling. More than 50 works of art in different mediums are on display in Wertheim’s educational room. Pieces include ceramics, Sumi landscape paintings, koi ﬁsh watercolors and detailed animal ink drawings. The artwork will continue on display throughout the month of May.

Recently, Supervisor Ed Romaine (center, left) and Councilwoman Jane Bonner (center) joined the Rocky Point Lions Club at the Wading River Elementary School (pictured) and the Laddie A. Decker Sound Beach School to speak with students about Arbor Day and to hand out tree seedlings. The Lions Club sponsored the event to renew interest in Arbor Day while enhancing our local environment. More than 900 fourth grade students from ﬁve north shore schools are joining students across the nation by taking home a free Norway spruce tree seedling to plant at their homes as part of the “Fourth Grade Foresters USA” program, which was created to provide a simple and inexpensive way for any individual, business or organization to send the fourth grade students home with a tree of their own to plant and care for. In 2016, the Town was designated as a “Tree City USA” by the National Arbor Day Foundation and in his 2015 State of the Town Address, Supervisor Romaine announced his “Greening Brookhaven” initiative to plant 10,000 trees by 2020.

WFHS Student Earns St. Joseph’s College Full Tuition Presidential Grant

William Floyd High School senior Isabella Liu has been selected to receive the St. Joseph’s College Presidential Grant, a full tuition grant for all four years of college. Isabella is one of only 11 students in Suffolk County to be selected for the grant this year. She will major in psychology beginning in the fall of 2017. Isabella will graduate among the top 10 percent in the class of 2017 and has been a member of the Key Club since her sophomore year. She currently serves in the position of editor. During her time in the Key Club, she has worked on various projects including “The Elimination Project” which is an effort to eliminate neonatal and maternal tetanus, as well as volunteering with the Children’s Literacy program

at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library. “What is amazing about Isabella is not only all that she has accomplished, but all that she will accomplish as a student at St. Joseph’s,” said Suzanne Crocetti, Isabella’s guidance counselor. “She is a student who makes us proud as educators and as a community. I cannot think of a more compassionate, intelligent or outgoing young woman who is more deserving of this grant.” St. Joseph’s College Presidential Grant recipients are well-rounded and high-achieving students who participate in various extracurricular activities and community service initiatives.  Community Events & Happenings 100th Anniversary Of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge In Patchogue

On Thursday, May 4 Supervisor Ed Romaine joined the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Brown’s Jeep Chrysler Dodge in Patchogue. Brown’s, located on Route 112, opened in 1917 as a repair shop on Main Street in Bellport. The business started selling Dodge and Plymouth products in 1935, and in 1991 after 74 years in Bellport, the dealership was moved to its Patchogue location. Long Island Recreation Club Fundraising Initiatives

 

               Pictured are Lorraine Lubicich, assistant professor; Michele Frati, senior administrative assistant; Gail Lamberta, associate dean for community  development; Chris Pendergast, president of ALS Ride for Life; and students from SJC Long Island’s Recreation Club.      Throughout the year, the SJC Long Island  Recreation Club Gamma Delta and the Student Government Association matched   organized several fundraising initiatives with a goal to raise the amount. The students also designed and sold t-shirts raising  $2,000 for the 20th anniversary of the ALS Ride for Life. an additional $715, held a bowling fundraiser that brought in Michele Frati, senior administrative assistant  in the Ofﬁce of $830 and received $375 in other donations. The Recreation Club  Student Life, introduced the Cash Bucket (instead of Ice Bucket) exceeded their fundraising goal and were able to present Chris    Challenge which raised $900 and had all SJC Long Island clubs Pendergast, president of ALS Ride for Life,a check for $3,000 on   participating. The largest amount of $308 was raised by Alpha Monday, May 1, 2017.          

Eagle Scout Honored From Troop 204 In Miller Place On May 8, Councilwoman Jane Bonner (right) and Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro attended the Sound Beach Civic Association meeting at the Sound Beach Fire Headquarters where they honored Eagle Scout Stephen Sarich from Troop 204 in Miller Place. Stephen’s Eagle Scout project was constructing benches and a planter at the Sound Beach Civic Association’s “Adopt-A-Spot” location on New York Avenue. “Congratulations to Stephen for completing his Adopt-A-Spot project and achieving the rank of Eagle Scout,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Scouts like Stephen are the leaders of tomorrow, and from what I can see of this outstanding youngster, I say that we’ll be in good hands.” Highway Superintendent Losquadro said, “I commend Stephen for having the enthusiasm, dedication and discipline necessary to achieve the

                          prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. His project at the  Adopt-A-Spot on New York  Avenue will help to beautify and revitalize a piece of Brookhaven Town.”  Since the award  was presented  in 1912, no more than four percent of all Scouts have attained the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank attainable in the  Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Since its introduction in 1911, the Eagle Scout rank has been earned by more than two million young men.

Lyme Disease Awareness,    Prevention and Treatment  

       Op-ed Written by Congressman Lee Zeldin (NY-01)      There are so many features of our local environment to enjoy on  Long Island, between the Pine Barrens, nature rails, or the signiﬁcant number of state parks and beaches scattered throughout our area.

    However, as a natural reality of our enjoyment of these treasures,    we also have to contend with tick-borne illness, incidents of which

skyrocket during the summer months. The most common tickborne

  infection in the United States is Lyme Disease, which affects tens of  thousands  of Americans every year. Here in New York, in 2015, we had the third highest rate of Lyme Disease contraction. As someone

 has personally contracted this disease, I can tell you that it is a who  very serious matter which requires our attention. We must do more to

advance prevention and recovery efforts for Lyme Disease, which can  

be fatal if left untreated. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month, and as members of a    which has an above average rate of contraction, we must community      each  do our part to educate and minimize incidents of occurrence. Early   indicators of Lyme Disease include flu-like symptoms, such as fever,   muscle aches, and fatigue, as well as rashes, which often times may  look like a bullseye. The key to prevention is tick check and removal,  especially if you are out enjoying the summer in fields or tall grass.  Should you or a member of your family suspect that you may have  contracted the disease, it is so important that medical assistance is  sought out as soon as possible.  I have been honored to be part of the effort to combat Lyme Disease  as your Representative. In the last Congress, I cosponsored and helped pass the 21st  Century Cures Act (H.R. 34). This new law accelerates     the process for scientific advancement, gives researchers access to  necessary resources, and helps deliver lifesaving or life improving  cures and treatments to Americans suffering from a disease. This  critical piece    oflegislation provides $4.8 billion in new funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of   Health and Human Services, which conducts essential medical and   public health research on illnesses such as Lyme. I was also a  cosponsor of the Tick-Borne Disease Research and Accountability  and Transparency Act (H.R. 789), which passed as part of H.R. 34, to    research on Lyme and other tick-borne illnesses. further advance In addition, the recently enacted budget provides a $2 billion  dollar increase for NIH, including the National Institute of Allergy and  Infectious Diseases, which focuses its efforts on diseases like Lyme.      This funding will allow researchers to continue their work in finding  new cures and treatments for the most prevalent diseases affecting Americans. The budget also increases funding for the Centers for   Control  and Prevention (CDC) by $22 million. CDC conducts  Disease  annual research      on the effects of this disease, as well as preventative measures.  Long Island is home to one of the most beautiful and unique   environments throughout the entire nation, and with this distinction      comes the responsibility of ensuring our residents remain protected.  This month, we must stay vigilant and prepare ourselves to deal with the spread of Lyme Disease. While I will continue my work in Congress  to ensure research for this disease remains funded at the appropriate levels,  we must all join together as a community to overcome this  challenge.    

Dear Editor:

Mr. Toranzo’s letter last week placing the blame for outer beach closures on Suffolk County was unbelievable. Local governments are mandated by federal agencies to protect the birds. Failure to do so can lead to heavy fines and even jail time for local officials. Even more unbelievable were statements that piping plovers can be moved to new locations. This is in direct violation of the federal laws!! Clearly Mr. Toranzo is misinformed. No such game plan can exist. Plans that work around the nests are allowed. After researching plans in other parts of the country that Fish and Wildlife Services has approved, I do not see how it can be successful at Smith Point. There are only two programs in the whole country, Massachusetts and Oregon, and the geography of those parks do not compare to Smith Point. Smith Point is unique due to the park having only one access road. When alternative management plans were implemented in other parts of the country, there were a host of options to manage recreational access concurrently with plover protection that do not exist at Smith Point. To be successful, Burma Road must be separated from the plover habitat by large, densely vegetated dunes. At Smith Point, the federal government is making that impossible. In the absence of physical barriers (contiguous dunes), plovers are still at serious risk. Federal agencies are reducing dunes and preventing Suffolk County from separating Burma Road. This is hypocrisy at its best. If federal officials want to work with local residents to improve access, then they need to allow Suffolk County to build our dunes up and strengthen the only road we have. Mandating conditions that create more nests in the only areas we can access the beach from is absolute stupidity. We need Senators Schumer and Gillibrand, and Congressman Zeldin to stop Fish and Wildlife Services from destroying our dunes. Then maybe a management plan can succeed and be worth the cost. Continuing past efforts, Colonials Community Volunteer Corps, sponsored by Colonial Youth and Family Services, has begun its Grafﬁti Removal Campaign for 2017. Volunteers will be working hard on this project every Friday through the fall. Spurred on by

many years of successful efforts and buoyed by tremendous amount of community support volunteers look forward to this project each year. The goal of this project is to remove grafﬁti vandalism from municipal property in our neighborhoods. To date, volunteers have removed 5,533 pieces of grafﬁti vandalism. Our volunteers strive to maintain these sites while continuing to expand the scope of this project. Say No To Sound Beach Crossing

Bayville Mayor Paul Rupp and village trustees recently reminded the taxpayers on Long Island of Governor Cuomo’s multi-million dollar study on the Cross-Sound Bridge. This project has been continuously blocked year after year for decades, with opposition from elected ofﬁcials, Long Island families, small businesses, and environmental groups. This is another example of petty partisan politics the governor is using to advance his run for the White House, and the taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill. The governor is catering to special interests, rather than our families on Long Island. The most recent study, conducted in 2007, estimated that the construction alone would cost taxpayers over one hundred million dollars. This does not include the ecological damage that would disrupt and cripple the ecosystem and wetlands, our pristine shoreline, and the historic North Shore of Long Island. Countless properties would be bought up by eminent domain, driving property taxes up even more. Our property taxes are too high as it is without adding this undertaking. This is not a sound project and I simply will not support it. I’ve been in Albany ﬁghting to end these pointless studies which never bear fruit. All of the Cross-Sound Bridge studies over the last decade say the same thing, it’s bad for the environment, bad for business, and bad for the taxpayer, yet here we are digging into it again.     Does “sexting” count as adultery? Or are these virtual dalliances with strangers we’ll     never meet just a harmless form of online entertainment? These are questions we’re just now beginning to consider. For the ﬁrst time in hu   man history, the Internet enables people to create an alternative sexual reality where   they can exist as “a body without a head (or mind), a pair of strained underpants,” or

  even as an avatar with a whole new identity.  

In the past, inﬁdelity was fraught with the possibility of destructive consequenc-

including    sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Not so if you  es,  “cheat” through          an online sex chat or a pornographic webcam. Recent surveys have

identiﬁed these activities are popular especially among people under 35, because       that  they allow otherwise    monogamous individuals to let off some steam. Researchers say cybersex is just one of many ways modern couples are seeking a little extra on   the side.   The Internet creates an illusion of anonymity among its users, making them think   of online affairs as a “kind of a game disconnected from reality.” But what a strange   reality it is. As reported in the New York Times, cybersex isn’t about relationships   at all, or even sex. It’s about narcissism – in its most “desperate and adolescent”   form. You don’t tweet photos of your penis or artsy shots of your gym-sculpted pecs        because you’re fascinated with the woman on the other end. You send them because   you’re fascinated with…yourself! Narcissism, of course, existed long before Face  book and Twitter, but social media serve “as a hall of mirrors in which it ﬂourishes       as never before.” In this obsessive new realm, the real thrill comes not from talking         dirty but from the chance to say, over and over: “Look at me! Brookhaven Town Clerk Donna Lent: Hands-On In An Efﬁciently-Run Ofﬁce

By Barbara LaMonica from page 1  Lent, a registered member of the Independence Party who  was cross-endorsed by the GOP is an independently elect ed official. She previously served as Chief Deputy Town  Clerk under former Town Clerk Patricia Eddington in 2010.  Prior to that, when Eddington was elected to the New York  State Assembly, Lent served as Eddington’s Chief of Staff for nine years from 2000 until 2009 supervising operations    of the local district office and Capitol office.  Lent offered to give a descript accounting of the duties  of the office of Brookhaven Town Clerk. As the official   secretary to the town board, she manages public speaking  comment, records votes at town board meetings and main    tains the schedule of public hearings which involve legal  and proper publishing and notification. From a statistical standpoint, the Town Clerk’s Office     maintains a host of records management including but     not limited to licenses for marriages which total approxi6,000 annually, birth certificates which amount to  mately  an estimated   8,000 a year, records management and registrar, death certificates and a boat slip waiting list which  managed to dwindle down significantly from an  Lent has  all-time high prior to her taking office. She is the custodian of town records in a Records Management Office that spans over 20,000 square feet. “I have a responsibility as Town Clerk and I don’t take it lightly,” Lent says of her work ethic. “I’m at work every day being very involved in the Town Clerk’s Office and I am hands-on.” But the scope and magnitude of the Town Clerk’s Office is far-reaching and multi-faceted, and Lent is quick to acknowledge and credit her staff of 33 full-time and part-time employees as an integral and significant component of the efficient day-to-day operations of the office. “These are wonderful, highly-skilled and dedicated employees who take pride in what they do,” Lent said. “The number of full-time people in this office has been reduced since I first arrived, so not only are we doing more with less, but,” Lent said, “we’re also more efficient.” That “efficiency” includes having departmentalized the office into a Licensing Section, Registrar Section and Administrative Section that includes issuing Land Use Applications. “My staff is really great and everyone is cross-trained,” Lent explained. “Morale is very important.” In streamlining the Town Clerk’s Office, Lent established a Central Scanning Repository when the town purchased its own scanner 18 months ago. Implementation of the $6.5 million scanning project involved scanning the town’s records, close to 20 million of them, of which Lent became project manager. For instance, in the Building Department, if 500 building permits are ordered, the process

which was previously done manually and would take up to three days is now accomplished through an electronic ﬁling system where permits are scanned within 20 seconds. “We maintain a Vacant Homes Registry and as well as a Marina Wait List,” Lent said, It is the once-controversial 12 to 14-year Marina Wait List that has been trimmed from thousands to a few hundred at Brookhaven Town’s various marinas. According to statistics reported by Lent, the Marina Wait List at press time has been trimmed as follows: Port Jefferson went from a wait list of 1,200 to 546; Mt. Sinai went from a wait list of 1,200 to 578, Corey Beach went from a wait list from 500 to 10. “The Marina Wait List is now published on-line, and it’s all about transparency and with no exceptions,” Lent said. “I asked Brookhaven Town for a tightened code change so that the rules are enforced and they are fair to everyone,” Lent said. In yet another intricate series of procedures, Lent oversaw the election process for Mastic Beach to become an incorporated village in August 2010. “I had to oversee the transfer of all records, and now, (with the dissolution of the village reverting it back to town governance), I have to take them back,” Lent explained, Lent, who is seeking re-election in November, says she serves Brookhaven’s 574,000 residents “with great pride” in a township that is geographically the largest in the state and second largest by population, and the 82nd largest city in the United States.

technique and improvisation classes for youth, teen, and adult acting    students.     Our new Children’s Theatre Conservatory classes for 3rd-12th     graders  consist of exercises that include improv and character work  and end in fully produced Children’s Theater performances for live

audiences!       

Question:

My mom is currently approved for Community Medicaid. I received a notification that her benefits need to be recertified. Is this something I should go back to my attorney to handle or can I fill it out myself?

Answer:

Once someone has been approved for Community Medicaid (home care benefits) or Chronic Medicaid (nursing home benefits) they will need to recertify with the local Department of Social Services each year. The recertification notice comes with an application that must be completed and sent in prior to the due date. The application should be sent in with supporting documentation showing income and asset verification for the Medicaid recipient and spouse. This is the way the Department of Social Service ensures that the Medicaid recipient is still entitled to the benefit. Retaining an attorney to prepare and submit the recertification is typically advisable. If the application is not filled out correctly or documentation is missing the recertification could be denied for failure to provide information. This would result in a loss of benefit for the Medicaid recipient and the possibility of a gap in coverage if a new application is not timely filed and approved. Another reason to have the attorney prepare the recertification documents is that this will be another opportunity for the attorney to review the entire file and make sure that all of the estate planning is also in order. For example, in the case of a Community Medicaid

application, the homestead (primary residence) is an exempted asset for the purpose of eligibility. Even though the property will be exempted from the calculation during the life of the applicant, under New York State law, costs of services provided under Medicaid to an individual over the age of 55 are subject to estate recovery at the time of the Medicaid recipient’s death, this would include the house. In order to prevent estate recovery, the Medicaid recipient should engage in proper estate planning during his or her life in order to make sure that no assets will be subjected to recovery after the Medicaid recipient’s death. Another reason for a thorough review is to make sure that the proper calculation is being used for any retirement accounts in pay-out status. Where the Medicaid recipient has a retirement account that is set up for a systematic monthly distribution, that distribution is based on the value of the account and the life expectancy of the Medicaid recipient. The value of the account can change over time and as the Medicaid recipient gets older, the monthly distribution may need to be changed. If the attorney prepares the recertification, the monthly distribution can be recalculated and adjusted if necessary. For most Medicaid recipients the benefits received under the Medicaid program are invaluable. Engaging your attorney to handle the recertification can ensure that the recertification application is prepared correctly and review all aspect of the recipient’s file to ensure no adjustments are necessary.

William Floyd Softball Ends Regular Season on High Note, Playoffs Begin 

    The William Floyd Colonials varsity softball team.  The William Floyd Colonials varsity softball team under the leadership of head   coach Fred Luhrs just finished an outstanding regular season which saw them post a  14-6 record and a second-place finish in League I falling just one win short of taking     home a share of the League title. This is the fourth consecutive year that the team has  qualified for postseason play.

Colonials ended the season in dramatic fashion last Wednesday with a 2-1    The extra inning     walk-off victory over Sachem North. With the game tied 1-1, Danielle D’Angelo hit a game winning walk-off home run over the left ﬁeld fence to seal the

victory. Macy Kane pitched the complete game by striking out six en route to her   win of the year. Key plays on defense were made by Jenna Klaus, Julia Mastrup, 10th  Brianna LoMonaco and Tristan Santiago.

 “The team is out on a mission to complete ‘unﬁnished business,’” said Coach  Luhrs. “They got a taste of playoff success [last year] and are looking forward to

game play this week. Also they feel slighted for not hosting a game in the opening  

round, which adds even more motivation to this team.” This year’s roster includes student athletes Jayna Rios, Danielle D’Angelo, Chloe    DeGrauw, Brianna LoMonaco, Julia Mastrup, Kiera Horan, Abigail Toranzo, Delaney        Kane, Macy Kane, Talia Dongvort, Jessica LaGuerra, Tristan Santiago, Jenna Klaus,     Alyssa Currao and Johanna Metz.   Some key stats this year include Danielle D’Angelo leading the team with a .500  batting average and 29 RBIs (second on the team); Jayna Rios second on the team  with a .391 batting average, a team-, league- and county-leading 10 home runs and  31 RBIs (ﬁrst on the team). Overall, the Colonials are batting .315 on the season with  15 home runs and 132 RBIs. Macy Kane also leads the Colonials pitching staff with  10 wins on the season.  Congratulations to all the student-athletes, Coach Luhrs, assistant coaches Pete      Recupero, Mike Barba and volunteer coach Ed Mass on a great regular season.  The  Bellport Varsity Baseball Team secured a share of the League 4 championship  with a 3-2 home win over Centereach High School. The Clippers ﬁnished the regular     season with a 14-6  record. A Notary Public is a state-appointed official who administers oaths and serves as an impartial witness when important documents are signed. A Notary Public most commonly administers oaths and affirmations but can also certify acknowledgements on documents such as deeds, mortgages or powers of attorneys. A Notary Public is commissioned to serve for four years. “If you are eighteen years old, a citizen of the United States and either live or have an office in New York State, you are eligible to serve as a Notary Public,” stated Suffolk County Clerk Judith A. Pascale. “Because you will need to pass an examination in order to serve, you should visit our office so that we can provide you with a copy of the Notary Public License Law study guide,” continued Pascale. The Notary Public Exam is a walk-in exam given regularly throughout New York State. In Suffolk County, the exam is administered by New York State Department of State in Hauppauge at the New York State Office Building located on Veteran’s Highway. An appointment is not necessary; examinations are conducted on a “walkin” basis. Summer Fun with Popsicles

With the warm weather approaching, why not turn it into a healthy summer time snack by making your own frozen treats.

Ingredients 3 cups watermelon puree (seedless if possible) 1/2 cup fresh blueberries 1/2 cup chopped fresh strawberries 1 kiwi, peeled and sliced 1 peach or nectarine, diced small 1 handful fresh cherries, pitted and chopped

Directions Cut the watermelon into chunks and then puree it in a blender until smooth. Set aside. Set out about 1 dozen popsicle molds (amount needed will vary depending on size of molds). Fill each one with the chopped fresh fruit. Then pour in the watermelon puree until each mold is full to the top. Place a popsicle stick into each one. Place into your freezer and freeze for about 6 to 8 hours. When ready to serve, run the popsicle molds under warm water for a few seconds and then pull each one out of the mold.
