Under the command of Third Assistant Chief Joseph Feola of Centereach Fire Department, first on location of a fast moving working residential structure fire. Centereach volunteer firefighters and mutual aid departments under Chief Feola’s command made a fast aggressive exterior attack. The structure was a total loss. There was no reported injuries.

Former Mastic Beach Hardware Store Destroyed In Fire
Over a dozen departments responded to a fire last week at the former Smittys Hardware Store property in Mastic Beach. No one was injured during the fire but it took volunteers hours to get the former hardware and lumber yard under control. As of press time, the fire was still under investigation.

Atlantic Color Corp Is Tops At Its Game
by Barbara LaMonica As requests for producing higher quality print publications are ratcheting up to keep pace with everincreasing demands for high speed deadlines in the quest for instantaneous news and information, so too, does the imperative for printing companies to invest in their product to meet those escalating demands. Shirley-based Atlantic Color Corporation is a commercial cold web print company where rolls of paper print materials off a cold press. Joe Calandra, Vice President of Operations for Atlantic Color Corporation details his company’s philosophy: “Our business philosophy is that we buy the best raw materials on the market, because we don’t believe in cheap printing. There are companies out there who believe in volume before quality, but for us, it is about quality first for our clients,” Calandra explains. Atlantic Color Corporation’s list of clientele includes but is not limited to the East Hampton Star, Southampton Press, South Shore Press, Long Island Business News, Times Review Newspapers, Sag Harbor Express, Rutgers Observer, and a host of boating publications, local libraries,

In paying attention to detail, climate surprisingly to those not familiar to the industry, plays a key role in the finished product. “The
terms of the end product,” Calandra explains. For example, the facility is equipped with humidifiers in the winter to keep the building moist in contrast to air conditioning in the summer for regulated climate control conditions where as many as 30,000 copies roll off the press per hour. “We have east end real estate ads where $10 million to $50 million homes are sold, and these ads must beprecise to so,” putting us under a lot of pressure perform, Calandra underscores, “we can’t cut corners and we have very welltrained craftsmen and women. Printing,” Calandra said, “is not just printing and pushing papers out the door. April is National Donate Life Month
Thousands of names are on the list, but not all will be saved. That’s the reality known by far too many people as they wait on New York’s organ transplant list. The month of April is recognized as National
Donate Life Month to help raise awareness that we each have the power to save lives and that there is a real need. Studies show that
New Yorkers overwhelmingly support organ donation - 9 out of 10 people - yet only 27 percent are actually registered organ donors, compared to more than 50 percent nationally. The shortage of organ donors is a national crisis, but it’s clear that New York particularly is in desperate need and has the ability to make a change. New York State ranks last out of all 50 states for organ donors, but ranks third in people waiting for organ donations. Out of the 120,000 Americans currently waiting for organ transplants, nearly 10,000 live here in New York. Together, we can help increase the chances of survival for those in need of lifesaving organ, tissue or eye transplants by simply registering and encouraging our loved ones to do the same. Remember, one donor can save up to eight lives and improve up to 50 others. the age of 18 can register as an organ donor in New Anyone over York State, and there are no costs to the donor or their family. Organ failure affects people of all ages and ethnicities, and it’s important to have diversity among donors to help save as many lives as possible. It’s now easierfor New Yorkers to become organ donors, thanks to Law, which passed in 2012 and allows people to register Lauren’s a donor when applying for or renewing a New York State driver’s as license or non-driver identification card. The law takes the name of a girl who received a lifesaving heart transplant at the age of 12. It’s also important to know that organs are given to people based on the severity of their illness, compatibility to the donor and their time spent waiting on the transplant list, not based on wealth or social status. Living donation, such as donating a kidney to a family member, is also possible. This gift of life, usually done through directed donation, forges long-lasting bonds between donors and recipients. To become a registered organ donor in New York State, you can apply in person at your local Department of Motor Vehicles, sign up online at LiveOnNY.org or download the form at health.ny.gov/ and mail it in. Community Viewpoint Running For School Board Dear Editor: As a former student of the South Country school district (class of 2012), I am extremely passionate that the current and future students get a valuable education. Bellport is fortunate enough to have great diversity, terrific educators, and engaged students; we must make sure that we secure this for the future and make it even better. I want to give the board a newer, and younger perspective. I am a recent graduate of St. Joseph’s College with a B.A. in sociology. It is there that I developed a deep passion for education and public service while learning from brilliant professors and mentors, such as former Congressman Tim Bishop. I am proud to be an employee of the South Country Library for three and a half years as the head of outreach and a circulation clerk. While working at the library I have connected with the community and continue to learn what makes them proud to be members of the South Country district, and what concerns they may have. I want South Country’s voice to be heard, make sure the taxpayer’s money is put in the right areas, help the art and music departments get what they need to help students achieve creative potential, and stand up for what is right for public education as a whole. Either way, I’ve been asked by a mutual friend of theirs to reach out to our members for anyone willing to give them some moral support. Just to have people sitting in the court room would help; it offers moral support for Pete and Margaret as well as sends a message to the court that the people are expecting justice. Promoting Business Development Dear Editor: I will be hosting a business summit and informational event called “Charting the Course” (CTC) on Monday, June 19th. CTC will bring together local businesses with key government agencies in an effort to support local economic development in the Seventh District. The event will feature a welcome panel to discuss lessons learned in Patchogue Village and how they can be applied to businesses around the district. The event is being Co-Hosted by the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, the Medford Chamber of Commerce, and the Village of Patchogue. Community Events & Happenings Rotary Members Making A Difference On Saturday, April 22nd, members of the Rotary Club of Shirley and the Mastics didn’t let the clouds and drizzle dampen their spirit of service before self and helped the community support our local food pantry. They collected food and monetary donations at Stop & Shop in Shirley from 9-12 and donated it all right back to the community where we need it most. Rotary members are not only local business leaders and problem solvers but they are great friends of our community who are making a positive change right here in their own neighborhood.

Medford Fire Department Celebrates 95th Annual Installation Dinner
Photo by Ron Monteleone The Medford Fire Department recently held their 95th Annual Installation Dinner at The East Wind Caterers. Congratulations to Chief of Department Anthony P. Mneri along with 1st Assistant Chief Wilfredo Garcia and 2nd Assistant Chief Franklin D. Rivera, Jr. and its members. Teachers at Brookhaven Elementary School have teamed up with “Book Fairies” to provide parents with some great fiction and non-fiction adult books. “Book Fairies” is a not-for-profit organization that collects reading material for people and districts in need throughout the New York metropolitan area. Their goal is to foster literacy and academic success. The goal of the Reading Role Model project was to provide parents with books to keep in the hopes that they will serve as a great tool to model the importance of reading in each household. These books were available for pick up during our spring parent teacher conferences as well as other after school events. Teachers have received some great feedback from parents regarding this project. Parents were excited to browse the available and there was a great book books buzz around the titles and authors that Book Fairies provided. Brookhaven looks forward to continuing this with the support of the Book Fairies for future events such as Kindergarten Orientation and Dial Screening.

Longwood High School Marching Band Leads Parade at Magic Kingdom
On Monday, April 10, the Longwood High School Marching Band, under the
directionof band director Phil Scanze, led the Festival of Fantasy parade at Walt World’s Magic Kingdom. The trip was the high school’s first visit to the Walt Disney
World Disney Resort as part of the Disney Performing Arts program. The performance was the highlight of a four-day trip and the culmination of months of fundraising, practice, and planning by the students and band staff. “Our students have been looking forward to this trip for close to a year since we submitted our audition tape,” said Mr. Scanze. “Some of our students have never been on an airplane; others have never been to Disney World. Performing in this once-in-a lifetime experience was an outstanding experience for them.” The students showcased their musical talents to Disney guests from across the nation and around the world by playing songs and rhythms that capture the spirit of America. During their stay, the students also enjoyed exploring Disney theme parks. Each year, vocal, instrumental and dance ensembles from around the world apply to perform as part of Disney Performing Arts at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Once selected, students perform amid an international audience Resort. of Disney theme park guests. William Floyd Hosts 36th Annual Senior Citizens Appreciation Dinner
The William Floyd School District recently hosted its 36th annual Senior Citizens’ Dinner held at John S. Hobart Elementary School as a way to show appreciation to the local citizens. Residents were treated to a tasty meal, student musical performances of the William Floyd High School Jazz Band under the direction of Michael Cordaro and “The Soundsations” under the direction of Barbara D’Orio and were served by members of the John S. Hobart Elementary School Student Council and the William Floyd High School NJROTC. More than 200 residents came out to share in the fun and fellowship of the evening. Special thanks to Carol Sears and the entire committee for organizing such a wonderful event each year. Broookhaven Town demolishes Ridge Motel East. For more then a decade, the vacant Ridge Motel East on Route 25 in Ridge has attracted squatters. For 1st responders and firefighters of the Ridge Fire Department it has been unsafe and a hazard if they need to enter the structure in the event of a fire. State law provides that the County Clerk’s Office files certificates for persons conducting business under an assumed business name. These are usually referred to as DBA’s. DBA certificates must contain specific information. A Business Certificate form for filing can be obtained by visiting the County Clerk’s website at www.SuffolkCountyNY.gov/Clerk and clicking on online forms. There are three basic DBA filings: Original; Amendments; Discontinuances. Original DBA Prior to filing an original DBA, the filer should review business names already assigned to ensure that the desired name is available. A list of current DBA’s is available for public review on the County Clerk website. All business names must consist of words that are used in the English language or it will be presumed to be a surname which can only be used by the person whose surname it is. Using a dictionary is advised to determine if the name you seek to use is acceptable. After checking on available names, and choosing a name that is available, a completed DBA form is filed in the Clerk’s Office with a fee of $35.00. The fee of $35.00 covers the filing, a certified copy for the filer’s record and a certified copy for a business bank account. Amending a DBA A DBA can be amended by filing a copy of the appropriate amendment form at the Clerk’s Office. The form can be obtained from various stationery stores, or by visiting the County Clerk’s website. Amendments can only be filed to change the business name, the business address, or to add or remove partners. Amendments and discontinuances require a reference to the original or most recent filing. The filing fee for an amended DBA is $35.00. Discontinuing a DBA A DBA can be discontinued when the individual or partners cease to conduct business. Like amendments, discontinuance requires reference to the original filing and amendments. Again, the form can be obtained from various stationery stores, or by visiting the County Clerk’s website. There is no fee for filing discontinuance. Other Business Types In addition to a DBA and Partnership, there are other types of business that can be started in New York such as Limited Liability Companies and Corporations. Both of these business types and others are created with the New York Secretary of State. Additional information can be obtained at www.DOS.NY.GOV. Upon creating a new business it is always advisable to discuss with an attorney and tax professional which business type suites your goals and needs.

in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a person who has a cognitive impairment such as Autism, or other mental challenges. If parents with children with special needs are interested in the Project Lifesaver Enrollment, applications can be obtained by calling (631) 852-3003. Your enrollment
application must be completed and submitted to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office at 100 Center Drive, Riverhead, N.Y. 11901. Once your application is reviewed, an appointment will be made for a home visit by a Project Lifesaver specialist from the Sheriff’s Office. There is a minimal cost for the equipment for monitoring. Stuffed Peppers
1 tablespoon olive oil 1 onion, finely chopped 1 small zucchini, grated 2 garlic cloves, minced 3/4 pound ground lean turkey breast 1 1/2 cups cooked brown rice 1/2 cup reduced-fat shredded Cheddar cheese 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 medium green, red, or yellow bell peppers 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara sauce
Directions Heat the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion, zucchini, and garlic and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, about 8 minutes. Transfer the onion mixture to a large bowl; let cool slightly. Add the turkey, rice, cheese, and salt; mix well to combine. Cut the tops off of the bell peppers; discard seeds and membranes. Spoon the turkey mixture into each pepper. Transfer the peppers, cut-side up, to a 5 1/2-quart slow cooker. Pour the sauce over the peppers and cook, covered, until the peppers are fork-tender, 3 – 4 hours on High or 4 – 6 hours on Low.

Suffolk County Republican Women held their 2017 Spring Fling at the Watermill Catering Hall in Smithtown. time candidate. The Suffolk County and Brookhaven Republicans Parties are extremely strong in the Town of Brookhaven but only control one Legislative seat. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Muratore is the sole Republican Legislator from the town. Sunderman gives the Republicans the best shot to capture a second seat. “The key will be organization. Your ground game and message must be awless. There is no time for on the job training or mistakes. Highlighting issues and solutions to problems throughout the district and raising money to get your message is the path to victory,â€? said one longtime Republican leader. The operative suggested that it will cost both candidates over $250,000 to properly run the strongest race possible. Both candidates will now vie for third party endorsements. It is expected that Josh will receive the support of the Working Families Party and Sundermann the support of the Conservative Party.
