BMH Receives $36,777 From Donaldsons of Sayville In ceremonies last week, Donaldsons Subaru of Sayville, NY presented Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center (BMHMC) with a check of over $37,777.00 -- raised during the dealership’s fiveweek “Share the Love” Hometown Charity event. Representatives from BMHMC, including president and CEO Richard T. Margulis, joined Donaldsons Subaru co-owners and brothers David, Bill, and John Donaldson; Donaldsons Subaru General Manager of Sales Operations Steven Fulco; Donaldsons Subaru’s award-winning certified sales professionals; and executives from Subaru Distributors Corp, for the check presentation held at the dealership located at 5700 Sunrise Highway in Sayville. “Donaldsons Subaru is fortunate to have a team that believes strongly in giving back and supporting our local community,” said David Donaldson. “And “Share the Love” is a wonderful way to involve our customers while raising money and awareness for the good work being done by Brookhaven Memorial Hospital that, in turn, benefits each of us, our families, and neighbors. Donaldsons Subaru selected BMHMC as beneficiary of the November 17, 2016 through January 3, 2017 sales drive in support of the hospital’s new Knapp Cardiac Care Center, built to provide Long Islanders with advanced interventional cardiac care capabilities.

“Subaru encourages local dealers to identify hometown charities for the receipt of a $250 donation on every car sold or leased during the national “Share the Love” drive,” explained General Manager of Sales Operations Steven Fulco, credited with setting up the initiative and helping drive the successful event with the Donaldsons sales team. “The sales team gave it their all and I’m extremely proud that Donaldsons Subaru can make this contribution toward the life-saving operations of Brookhaven’s new Knapp Cardiac Care Center.” Richard Margulis noted that Donaldsons Subaru has become a true partner of the community hospital, lending support, energy and spirit to multiple initiatives including the recent “Subaru Love Promise,” with a donation of 60 individually sealed and wrapped blankets presented with messages of hope penned by Donaldsons Subaru customers to provide comfort to cancer patients at BMHMC. “Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center gives heartfelt thanks to everyone at Donaldsons Subaru for their support of our mission to provide Long Islanders with quality, patient-centered healthcare,” said Mr. Margulis. “Through “Share the Love,” they have demonstrated their charitable responsiveness and remarkable sales capabilities by raising this generous amount for the Knapp Cardiac Care Center.”

   Facelifts and Improvements on Tap for 3rd Council District Story by Barbara LaMonica Continued from page 1 According to 3rd District Councilman Kevin LaValle, the projects are basically a blueprint and a map towards more uniform planning of business districts as well as construction of a residential community on land that has long been sitting vacant. Residents are expected to attend a public hearing scheduled for April 10 at Brookhaven Town Hall at 5 p.m. At stake are a series of proposed various mixed zone changes along Nichols, Horseblock and Portion Roads near County Road 83. “We’re finishing up a Land Use Plan which is what the public hearing will be on where we’ll be rezoning 53 properties along Portion Road and Horseblock Road,” LaValle said. “What this will do is create a road map to the future where coordinated zonings will help create a walkable downtown community with transition areas with a mix of retail and office space,” LaValle explained, noting that he has been working closely with residents and business community leaders over the last two years. “The real goal with the Land Use Plan,” LaValle pointed out, “is to give a vision of where things are located and take the random land uses that are currently in place and organize them more effectively.” The councilman confirmed there will be no eminent domain procedures involved with this project. Farmingville Residents’ Association Executive Director Marisa Pizza said the rezoning are a long time coming. Pizza, who is also a director with the Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce explained: “There are many facets to this project and what we’re trying to do is create a

         

business district that is a more walkable downtown. There is no uniformity in the zonings as they are now.” Pizza said some businesses are set closer to the road while others are set further back. “Under the new plan, businesses would be closer to the front of the street with rear parking to accommodate a walkable downtown community,” she explained. While existing businesses would stay where they are located, Pizza said new businesses coming into the community would be required to follow the zoning for their businesses to be set closer to the road. While an array of projects are on tap, somes are already underway in Triangle Park where Pizza said planters have been removed to allow more room for tables and benches for residents to relax and enjoy themselves. Because of Triangle Park’s close proximity to the street, Pizza noted: “We’re looking to install wrought iron fencing around the perimeter of the park as a barrier and so people will be safe.” Meanwhile, Pizza conﬁrms that local organizations have been working closely with Councilman LaValle as well as Suffolk County where a $100,000 grant has been secured to aid in revitalizing Triangle Park. A short distance away, LaValle explained, is a proposal to build a mix of houses, condominiums, town houses combined with a small portion of retail. “The Arboretum Project is a mixed-use development that going to be behind the post ofﬁce in Farmingville that will be developed along Portion Road,” LaValle said. The mixed use zoning will include a combination of townhouses and condominiums with single family houses along the perimeter of the project. Pizza

said the developer has been listening to the concerns, most of which center around traffic ingress and egress with the builder. Pizza said planners wanted to get residents’ feedback on traffic concerns on Hanraham Avenue. According to Pizza, the main entrance into the Arboretum Project will be on Horseblock Road with a traffic light. The side ingress and egress will be off Hanraham on Henry Street. Developer Mike Kelly noted that the project will occupy property that has been a long-vacant farm. “This is a good fit for Farmingville because it’s a major investment into the community which will create all sorts of economic development as people moving into the area will spur economic activity,” Kelly said. According to Kelly, the project is currently in the engineering and product development stages and proposes a mix of residences expected to break ground in Spring of  2018. Pizza said an attractive component to the    292-unit proposal is the inclusion of work   force housing units which will comprise 25% of the project. “This will allow for     our aging and younger populations who     want to live in the community and own will    have an opportunity to purchase,” Pizza   said,   “because for an average family where    one family might not otherwise be able to  buy a home, this is a chance to purchase a home and stay on Long Island rather than    be forced to move away,” she said.    According to Kelly, there will be a    mix of market rate units and work force   housing which will be tied to area income   eligible individuals and will work with the

qualify prospective buyers. The difference in the homes,Kelly said, will involve price    points on interior ﬁnishings. All exteriors  will be uniform. Kelly explained the  structural distinctions between condos and   town houses where condos are attached  side-by-side with upper and lower level     houses are attached units, and town  with no residences overhead. “We work closely with the Farmingville Residents’  to  Association and chamber come up with   a plan  that is  consistent with their visioning and their Land Use Plan for Horseblock   Road,” Kelly said, noting after engineering and product design stage will be site plan  approvals from the Brookhaven Town  Planning Board. “We’ve built several  redevelopment projects in various communities and it’s exciting to be able to    invest in a community like Farmingville and show what the positive economic impacts  will be,” Kelly explained.  Pizza Arboretum Project  noted  the     calls for 12,000 square feet in front that       will accommodate an 80 seat restaurant   and light retail above the restaurant.  Karen Lambert Recognized as Suffolk County Woman of Distinction

The Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday, March 28 recognized 18 extraordinary women from each legislative district for their volunteerism and leadership, including Karen Lambert, who was selected as the third legislative district’s recipient of the Woman of Distinction honor. This is the second annual Woman of Distinction award, sponsored by the Suffolk County Women’s Advisory Commission. The award was created to highlight the many contributions women make to their communities. Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), who nominated Mrs. Lambert as a resident of her district stated, “We appreciate all of these amazing women for the work they do, the leadership they have shown and their extraordinary service to all of their communities. I am personally honored to recognize Karen Lambert as the recipient in my district. She is a strong role model for women throughout Suffolk County and has given so much to her community” Karen Lambert has been a resident of Shirley for thirty years. Shortly after moving to Shirley she and her husband Robert joined Shirley Community Ambulance.

Karen has spent thirty-five years in the banking    field, where she was an Assistant Branch Manager for a      popular bank within the community forover ten years.      For a time, she also held a position as an Assistant Vice  President, and is  currently an Operation Specialist for   Bridgehampton National Bank.         Karen is also  a breast cancer survivor. Throughout her fight while undergoing surgery and treatment she    continued with her responsibilities as a volunteer with   the Shirley Ambulance Company. She has worked to    help the Long Island 2 Day Breast Cancer Walk every    year since its inception thirteen years ago. Every day     Karen serves as a source of encouragement for people      dealing with breast cancer, whether it’s lending an ear  to listen or just letting them know there is a light at the   end of the tunnel.

Rotary Club Of The Moriches Honors The women Of The PaQuaTuck Squaws On Thursday March 16 the members of the Rotary Club of the Moriches honored the women of the PaQuaTuck Squaws. The Squaws are a group of women dedicated to raising funds to support Camp PaQuaTuck. Through various fund raising events including the long running Spooky Walk this group of amazingly dedicated women have raised well over one million dollars all to beneﬁt the camp. On Thursday evening the president of the Squaws, Dorothy Elliot, and all the Squaws presented a check to camp treasurer, Newton Homan, in the amount of $160,000.00. A portion of this years donation, $50,000.00, will be used to construct a new state-of-the-art playground speciﬁcally designed for children with developmental disabilities. To honor the Squaws, The Rotary Club of the Moriches, will be naming the playground after The Moriches  PaQuaTuck Squaws.

    William Floyd Middle School recently   held their annual Showcase Night as  a way to give parents and members of  the community a glimpse into the great  programs, events and opportunities  available to students. It also served as a  welcome to next year’s incoming sixth grade students who were able to attend. In  addition to showcasing various successes in academics, music, art, sports, clubs and  more, attendees had the opportunity to  participate in several workshops including a  of   “Birds Prey” presentation, “The Road to College” and various musical performances   by the talented student musicians.

     We Commend the U.S. Soccer Federation For Showing       Respect to our Nation.   The South Shore Press is pleased and proud to congratulate        the United States Soccer Federation for their vote during

      requiring all players in their league to stand and show  February    

respect during the national anthem.       The Federation took this action after one of its players knelt     during the national anthem in support of a football player who    also did the same thing.   The South    Shore Press has decided not to even mention the name of the sports players, because we are so offended by their         actions.         The players claim they are taking this action to show that         there is not racial justice within the United States.   We disagree with their methods and forum.     The fact that these sports players even have the ability to   show disrespect would not be allowed in many nations.     Our nation is respected and remembered by showing respect          to the American  ﬂag, the national anthem, and the men and   women who have given their lives or are serving now protecting      our nation and  its citizens.     As     we enjoy the most freedoms of any person on Americans     this planet.     The action taken by the United States Soccer Federation is       the type of bold and courageous action that should be taken by     every sports teams, sports league and organizations.        What has been forgotten by these players is the disrespect   they are showing to the Americans who have made sacriﬁces to            protect our freedoms and rights.          What these players have also forgotten is they are being     paid  to play sports, not to use their job as a political or social             platform. If that’s what they want to do, they should give up their   million dollar careers and protest on their own time.       We agree there are many problems in America. We agree            that there must be justice for all, regardless of race, religion,     gender, career or political beliefs.       Enough is enough by these overpaid sports players.

Mandatory E-Prescribing

Since the start of the mandatory E-prescribing on March 27th 2016 from doctors offices to pharmacies has electronic prescribing plagued by numerous interface problems and communications gaps between physician’s offices and pharmacies. Some of the deficiencies reflect underlying structural problems in the electronic prescribing software that many physicians use. Many patients are furious over this mandate and not being able to shop around for prescription medication prices that fits their budget. They are stuck with one pharmacy. Once at a doctor’s office, You give him a pharmacy name and number, where the doctor then sends through electronic transmission your prescription. Another issue that was brought up on the e-prescribing was patients going to their preferred pharmacy of their choice after leaving their doctor’s office and finding out that their prescription was not ready or was not yet received and/or processed, causing long lines at the pharmacy pick up counter or the pharmacy experiencing some irate customers waiting for their prescriptions for over an hour or more after leaving the physician’s office. The biggest issues pharmacies are having is that manpower is not available. Pharmacies tend to have manpower working according to past customer’s demand, which is not always the case. You can’t predict customer patronage according to past history. Three-quarters of the physician’s offices have been experiencing difficulties in prescribing electronically to mail-order

companies. This has become problematic with maintenance prescriptions sent directly to mail order pharmacies where the patient needs to start a particular medication immediately and the pharmacy is being directed that the patients prescription may only be ﬁlled by mail order. Another issue that has been a concern for pharmacists is the drug interactions or allergies the patients may experience that the physicians may not be aware of. The upside to e-prescribing is less paperwork for the physician and for the pharmacy to handle which may result in a prescription getting lost or misplaced. The downside is what systems pharmacies have, in case their computer systems crash and all data is erased and gone in cyber world? E-prescribing also prevents patients from doctor/provider shopping for narcotic and or controlled substance prescriptions. E-prescribing prevents fraudulent prescriptions from being written and brought to pharmacies and dispensed to the patients in large quantity.

Directions Whisk together melted butter and next 5 ingredients in a large bowl. Stir in ﬂour  and chopped pecans. Pour batter into a  greased and ﬂoured 15- x 10-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove from oven; top  warm cake evenly with marshmallows. Return to oven, and bake 5 minutes. Drizzle Chocolate Frosting over warm cake. Cool completely. 

          In a medium bowl, sift together the confectioners’ sugar and cocoa, and set aside.  In a large bowl, cream butter until smooth, then gradually beat in sugar mixture  alternately with evaporated milk. Blend in vanilla. Beat until light and ﬂuffy. If necessary, adjust consistency with more milk or sugar Frosting 2 and 3/4 cups confectioners’ sugar 6 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 6 tablespoons butter 5 tablespoons evaporated milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

numerous merit badges and ranks. As part of the process to obtain Scouting’s highest rank, both boys were required to complete an Eagle project. Mr. Schneider constructed a podium that will be used at William Floyd High School and Mr. Towle constructed six ﬂower boxes for the Brookhaven Ecology site. NYS Estate Tax Update

         Dinner Centereach Fire Department 2017 Installation

  The New York State Estate Tax exclusion amount will be increasing again as of April Installation Dinner at The 1, 2017 to $5,250,000. This is an increase from the $4,187,500 exclusion amount which The Centereach Fire Department recently held their 84th Annual and its members. East Wind Caterers. On January 1, 2019, the basic exclusion amount will be indexed    for inflation annually and will be equal to the federal exclusion amount. The federal exclusion amount will be issued by the IRS towards the end of 2018. The New York State     and federal exclusion amount is estimated to be $5,900,000 in 2019. As of January 1,            2017, the federal estate tax exclusion is $5,490,000.      An item still of concern to many is the “cliff” language contained in the law. If the      estate is valued between 100% and 105% of the exclusion amount, the amount over the      exclusion will be taxed. As of April 1, 2017, the 105% amount is $5,512,500. However,      once an estate exceeds the exclusion amount by more than 5%, not just the amount in      excess of the exclusion amount is taxed, but, rather, the entire estate is subject to estate     tax. Practically, this means that taxable estates greater than 105% of the exclusion amount    receive no benefit from the exclusion amounts shown above and will pay the same tax          that would have been paid under the prior estate tax law.     New York repealed its gift tax in 2000. This meant that as a New York resident, if you     made lifetime gifts to friends or family members, the gift was not taxed or included in      your New York gross estate for purposes of calculating your estate tax. With the estate         tax law as enacted in 2014, there is a limited three year look back period for gifts made       between April 1, 2014 and January 1, 2019. This means that if a New York resident dies         within three years of making a taxable gift, the value of the gift will be included in the      decedent’s estate for purposes of computing the New York estate tax. The following gifts  are excluded from the three year look back: (1) gifts made when the decedent was not a     New York resident; (2) gifts made by a New York resident before April 1, 2014; (3) gifts  made by a New York resident on or after January 1, 2019; and (4) gifts that are otherwise        includible in the decedent’s estate under another provision of the federal estate tax law  (that is, such gifts aren’t taxed twice). For Federal Gift Tax purposes, in 2017, you can still make annual gifts of $14,000 per    person without having to report these gifts on a gift tax return. These $14,000 gifts are             also not included for New York State Estate Tax purposes.    The New York State Estate Tax law does not contain a portability provision like in the     federal estate tax law. Portability is a provision in the federal estate tax law that allows          the unused estate tax exemption of a married taxpayer to carry over to his or her surviving    spouse. Without portability, the manner in which a married couple holds title to their     assets may continue to have a significant effect on the amount of New York State Estate    Tax ultimately payable upon the survivors’ death.        This New York Estate Tax law is getting closer each year to eliminating the gap       between the New York and federal estate tax exclusion amounts. For the next two years,        as the exclusion amount increases and the 3-year look back for taxable gifts applies, tax      planning will still be complex. That being said, it is important for anyone considering    whether to make changes to their estate plans or gifting strategies to see an estate planning  attorney specializing in these matters.

 
