On September 9, 1942, Japanese pilot Nobuo Fujita catapulted his seaplane off of a submarine, flew over the forests of the southern Oregon coast, and conducted the only manned aerial bombings of the United States mainland during WWII. He never dreamed he would one day be invited back to the region, where he would begin a 35year friendship with the people of a small Oregon town. Samurai in the Oregon Sky tells the story of how Mr. Fujita came to refer to his former target as his “second home.”

PEOPLE MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK
STAFF PROFILE
JENNY PEDERSEN
COMMUNITY LIBRARIAN
Jenny oversees the Law Library at Deschutes Public Library, providing public access to legal resources. No two days look alike in her role: she might be answering questions about divorce, estate planning, or landlord-tenant law; organizing the popular Lawyer in the Library and Notary Public in the Library programs; or helping people navigate the expungement process so they can pursue jobs and housing. She also works with the Deschutes County Access to Justice Committee and hosts Changing Patterns: Re-Entry Weeklies for people returning home from incarceration. “I really love helping people find the information and resources that will help them move forward in whatever phase of life they’re in,” she says. Jenny believes libraries are the great equalizers of society and was recently recognized by Library Journal as a 2026 Mover & Shaker due to her advocacy work around providing open access to legal information. A lifelong horseback rider and avid reader, Jenny says the book that made the biggest impact on her is Your Money or Your Life by Vicki Robin. Follow her reading life on Bibliocommons at DPLJennyP.
STAFF PROFILE
JENNY MCGEE
EVENTS COORDINATOR
As an Events Coordinator, Jenny McGee designs and delivers events for two communities close to her heart: teens and Spanish speakers. While any given day involves its share of emails and paperwork, the real reward comes on event days when she gets to create experiences that spark genuine connection. “It brings me so much joy to be able to witness the ‘lightbulb moment,’, the oohs and ahhs of a crowd, or the relief of someone finally getting to converse in their first language,” Jenny says. She sees library programming as a stepping stone toward growth where people can learn, create, and find community, especially when they’re trying something new. She believes libraries are one of the few places where people are free to simply exist, no cost required. “Whether you need to escape the weather or just needing a change of scenery, the library is here for you!,” she says. Her favorite book is the children’s classic Ferdinand, whose message still resonates: calmness is a strength, gentleness can be powerful, and the world is better when people live as their most authentic selves.
CUSTOMER PROFILE FRANK PATKA
Frank served six years in prison, including a life-changing summer in solitary confinement. After leaving “the hole,” he met monthly with his new mentor, Mr. Morrison. “He encouraged me to do things differently, like attend Toastmasters classes and read self-help books,” says Frank. “The library became a lifeline.” When Frank was released, he had what many didn’t: a job, family, housing, transportation. Yet, many of his friends, despite similar efforts inside, returned to old ways and back in prison. “We were all doing the same thing inside,” Frank pondered. “Why did it change when we got out?” Determined to answer that question, Frank founded Changing Patterns Inc. in 2017. The organization connects returning citizens to employment opportunities, education, and community resources. “We’re the boots on the ground when it comes to providing education and mentorship when it matters most,” says Frank. Through weekly peer support groups and the library’s partnership, participants get the opportunity to keep moving forward. “I’m so grateful for the support from Deschutes Public Library. Without you, we wouldn’t have a place to make a difference.”
