Join Professor Universe on his greatest adventure yet as he embarks on a mission to save the entire planet with a little help from the carbon cycle. After all, we’d be nothing without carbon! If you’ve visited a Deschutes Public Library recently, you’ve probably noticed our Children’s Discovery Spaces. Filled with interactive stations, books, and hands-on activities, these spaces are designed especially for children ages 0–5 and the grownups who explore alongside them.
WHAT IS THE CHILDREN'S DISCOVERY SPACE?
Our Children’s Discovery Spaces are hands-on learning environments where play and early literacy go hand in hand. Every activity is designed to help young children build the skills they’ll use to become confident readers and lifelong learners.
As children play, they’re also learning to:
• Tell stories and express ideas
• Recognize letters, words, and print
• Build vocabulary through conversation
• Hear sounds and patterns in language
• Develop confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills
• Practice sharing, cooperation, and other social-emotional skills
It may look like play, but every block stacked, pretend meal served, puzzle solved, and story shared is helping build important foundations for learning.
LEARNING THROUGH PLAY
Research shows that young children learn best through hands-on experiences. Talking, reading, singing, writing, and playing together help build early literacy skills long before children begin reading independently. The Discovery Space gives families a place to learn together while making joyful memories along the way.
BEFORE YOU VISIT
The Discovery Space is designed for children ages 0–5 and their caregivers. To help keep the space safe and welcoming for everyone, children should remain supervised by their caregivers at all times, use inside voices, keep shoes on, and save running, climbing, jumping, and throwing for places designed for those activities.
Whether you’re stopping by for a few minutes or spending the entire day exploring, we hope you’ll discover just how much learning can happen through play.

The skills children build in the Discovery Space help prepare them for kindergarten. Keep the learning going by joining our Ready to Read challenge and read 1,000 books together before kindergarten. Every book counts, and every story brings your child one step closer to becoming a strong reader. Ask a staff member at any library branch about Ready to Read.

VELAZQUEZ ACUNA
Como estudiante que está por comenzar su último año en Redmond Proficiency Academy, Edna ha encontrado un nuevo lugar de referencia en la Biblioteca de Redmond y la Biblioteca Central. Durante el año escolar es una visitante habitual de la Biblioteca de Redmond, donde los espacios de estudio tranquilos le ayudan a mantenerse concentrada. “Es un buen lugar para pasar el rato y estudiar,” dijo Edna. “Las salas de estudio son mis favoritas porque puedo proyectar contenido en los televisores y usar pizarras digitales que se sincronizan con mi computadora.” Fuera del aula, Edna es una estudiante comprometida con el programa 4-H que cría dos corderos de exhibición con la esperanza de seguir una carrera en derecho agrícola. La primera vez que entró en la nueva Biblioteca Central, quedó inmediatamente asombrada con las obras de arte del vestíbulo y la extensa colección de la Biblioteca de Cosas. “Las bibliotecas son importantes porque puedes estar ahí sin gastar dinero,” dijo Edna. “Paso por ahí para estudiar, echar un vistazo a la sección de la Biblioteca de Derecho, reservar una sala de reuniones o hacer fotocopias—es un espacio estupendo para los estudiantes.” Desde estudiantes hasta graduados y abuelos, cada visita a la biblioteca ofrece una nueva oportunidad para aprender, desarrollarse y relacionarse.

SONJA BRANDJES
REGIONAL LIBRARY OPERATIONS MANAGER
Behind the scenes of every library interaction is a Regional Library Operations Manager. Sonja oversees operations for the Sisters, Sunriver, La Pine, and Redmond Library locations, and is responsible for ensuring the delivery of seamless operations and excellent customer service. “I love seeing the results of the great work we do as a team,” Sonja says. “When I hear amazing stories or simply see smiling faces because of an outstanding experience at the library, I know we are aiming at the right goals.” In Sonja’s nine years of library experience she’s conquered many books, and they still remain her favorite library resource. “I also absolutely love passing by one of our many community spaces and seeing the variety of programs our community librarians and events teams facilitate,” Sonja adds. She credits her love of libraries as one of the few remaining examples of community hubs where everyone can feel safe to show up knowing everything or nothing. “They are safe places to simply be present or to share and gather ideas.”

RUSSELL DELMET
PUBLIC SERVICES SPECIALIST
If you’ve ever received help signing up for a library card, reserving a meeting room, or finding a book on the shelf, a Public Services Specialist like Russell was there for you. Russell joined DPL in February 2025 and is one of the friendly faces at the heart of library operations. “Before starting here, I didn’t realize how many services we provide for free,” Russell says. “That makes me proud to be part of the team.” Russell loves chatting about the Library of Things collection and enjoys helping customers. Another perk of the job is talking about books. His current favorite read is Rough Justice: A Western Story by Lauran Paine. “I’m writing a Western novel of my own right now and that book has been my biggest inspiration,” he says. When he’s not providing top-notch customer service, Russell DJs NIGHTCHURCH The Metal Message radio show every Friday night featuring all-eras headbanging classics, available via the Stationhead app.

EDNA ROCIO VELAZQUEZ ACUNA
As an incoming senior at Redmond Proficiency Academy, Edna has found a new home base at the Redmond and Central Libraries. During the school year she’s a regular at the Redmond Library where the quiet study spaces help her stay focused. “It’s a good place to hang out and study,” she says. “The study rooms are my favorite because I can project onto the TVs and use digital whiteboards that sync with my computer.” Outside the classroom Edna is a dedicated 4-H student raising two show lambs with hopes to pursue a career in agricultural law. The first time she stepped foot inside the new Central Library, she immediately was in awe of the lobby artwork and expansive Library of Things collection. “Libraries are important because you can just be there without spending money,” Edna says. “I pop in to study, browse the Law Library section, reserve a meeting room, or make copies—it’s a really great space to be a student.” From students to graduates to grandparents, every visit to the library offers a new opportunity to learn, thrive, and connect.
