SOLAR VIEWING: A LOOK AT OUR CLOSEST STAR What we know about most stars in the universe comes from studying the one star we can see in detail: the Sun. Paty ha vivido en Bend durante muchos años, pero nació en Viña del Mar, Chile, un paraíso ubicado entre el océano Pacífico y la cordillera de la costa. En Chile, trabajó como profesora de arte, enseñando historia del arte y cerámica mientras pintaba el mundo que la rodeaba. Actualmente, Paty pasa su tiempo libre en la biblioteca, explorando libros de arte y artesanía y admirando las obras de arte que se encuentran en toda la Biblioteca Central. Ella disfruta leer biografías y novelas históricas. «Te abren los ojos al mundo», dice Paty. «Aprendes sobre diferentes personas, lugares y experiencias, y eso te ayuda a ver la vida desde otra perspectiva». Paty también aprovecha los servicios gratuitos de la biblioteca. Programó una sesión de Book-a-Librarian con una bibliotecaria comunitaria bilingüe para aprender a manejar mejor su aparato móvil. Después, recibió ayuda personalizada en Ayuda Tecnología con la configuración de aplicaciones y almacenamiento. Como aprendiz de toda la vida y amante de la biblioteca, Paty mantiene un espíritu joven. «Siento que estoy en mis veinte», dice Paty. «La biblioteca me recuerda que nunca se es demasiado mayor para seguir aprendiendo».

MAKING YOUR LIBRARY WORK STAFF PROFILE
GINNY SNODGRASS MAKERSPACE TECHNICIAN
Whether you’re a curious tinkerer or an experienced maker, there’s no better place to start your creative journey than the Library’s MakerSpaces. Ginny is one of two MakerSpace Technicians who help community members of all ages come together to imagine, invent, and create. “I love teaching people new skills, and the library is such a wonderful place to learn,” says Ginny. It’s also the perfect place to check out a book or two. Ginny’s own recent reads include books by authors Janine Amesta and Rachel Gillig. And when she’s not wearing her MakerSpace hat, she’s pointing community members toward some of the library’s other standout programs, including Technology Troubleshooting, Dungeons & Dragons for Beginners, and Tardes en Familia en español, just to name a few. “Libraries are essential for a growing community—they bring resources to people of all backgrounds and walks of life.” says Ginny.

AL WILSON
Three cheers for library volunteers! Al has been volunteering at Deschutes Public Library for almost 15 years. “Since I significantly utilize the library, I felt the need to give back with some of my free time,” says Al. He fills two roles: pulling books from the paging list for customers with holds and staffing open sessions to help people troubleshoot their computers, tablets, and phones. One of his favorite perks? Discovering new titles while pulling from the paging list. While it’s hard to pick a favorite book, he has narrowed down some of his top authors, including Stephen Ambrose, Rick Atkinson, Andy Weir, Stephen King, Paul Doiron, and John Sandford. Volunteers really make the library go ’round, and for Al, the library made all the difference in choosing where to retire. “When my wife and I were looking for a location to retire, a quality and extensive library system was one of the key factors,” says Al. “Central Oregon exceeded our expectations and continues to do so with the new library facilities.”
CUSTOMER PROFILE
PATRICIA (PATY) A. PELHAM Paty has called Bend home for many years, but she was born in Viña del Mar, Chile—a paradise nestled between the Pacific Ocean and coastal hills. In Chile, she worked as an art professor, teaching art history and ceramics while painting the world around her. Today, Paty spends her free time at the library, browsing arts and crafts books and admiring the artwork throughout the Central Library. She enjoys biographies and historical fiction. “They open your eyes to the world,” says Paty. “You learn about different people, places, and experiences, and it helps you see life from a different perspective.” Paty also utilizes the library’s free services. She scheduled a Book-a-Librarian session with a Spanish-speaking Community Librarian to learn about managing her smartphone, followed by Technology Troubleshooting with her phone’s settings, including managing apps and storage. A lifelong learner and library lover, Paty remains young at heart. “I feel like I’m in my twenties,” she says. “The library reminds me that you’re never too old to keep learning.”

FREEDOM TO READ Banned Books Week: October 4–10, 2026 In an era where information is readily available at our fingertips, libraries stand as guardians of intellectual freedom, championing the right of every individual to access a wide spectrum of information. This commitment to fostering informed thought and protecting the First Amendment rights of the public is a core value of public libraries. At Deschutes Public Library—and at libraries across the county—we recognize that intellectual freedom is intertwined with the fundamental right to freedom of speech, and an informed citizenry is essential to exercising that free speech. Our First Amendment rights are closely linked to the right to access information, and the courts have held that public libraries are the cornerstone of this access. Deschutes Public Library’s mission is to enrich the community through equitable, open access to books, services, and resources that inspire people to reach for their dreams. The library stands firm in its resolve to safeguard the intellectual freedom of the community by providing access to a wide array of materials, even those that may be controversial or challenging.
BOOK BANS AND CHALLENGES While Banned Books Week is an annual awareness campaign that spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books, intellectual freedom is something that libraries strive to protect every day. The intention of Banned Books Week is to celebrate the freedom to read while recognizing the works that have faced book challenges over the year. Formally, a “book banning” takes place when a library removes a book from its shelves based on someone’s request. When a title has been requested to be removed (known as a “request for reconsideration”), that act is called a book challenge. Both formal book bans and challenges are acknowledged in the celebration of Banned Books Week. Recognizing that understanding different perspectives can bridge divides, libraries seek to provide a platform where diverse voices can be heard. By offering a plethora of viewpoints, libraries foster an environment where people can engage in informed discussions and learn from one another. Intellectual freedom and access to information is essential in a functioning democracy. Celebrate your right to read by staying informed and engaging in healthy discourse.
