None of us could have anticipated the events of this year. The pandemic upended our lives in countless ways. It cut short the hopes and plans of every community member. It rocked every industry. And the arts have been hit especially hard. With The Smith Center’s temporary closure, our stages remain dark for the longest time in our nonprofit’s eight-year history. I hear from so many people that they miss our performances, our education programs and simply gathering with friends and family on our beautiful campus. On behalf of the whole Smith Center family: we miss you, too. But there is good news. In spite of the tremendous challenges over past months, The Smith Center team still accomplished much in our shortened season. We presented 272 performances spanning music, theater and dance. This included Tony-winning classics and hits fresh from the Broadway stage like “Anastasia,” “Wicked” and “Jesus Christ Superstar,” thanks to the support of our Broadway sponsors, Toyota and University Medical Center and Lewis, Roca, Rothgerber, Christie. . Our education and outreach programs still made a widespread impact, such as presenting student matinees for 50,892 students and teachers, at no cost to schools. Even though we had to cancel the red-carpet event for our fifth-annual Heart of Education Awards celebrating outstanding Clark County School District teachers, we still honored over 800 finalists with sponsored gift packages. I personally contacted each of our 20 winners virtually to tell them about their cash award, made possible by the support of The Rogers Foundation. And now, we plan for the future. I promise you, The Smith Center will reopen. We’re planning daily to ensure we do so with every possible measure to keep our guests as safe as we can. Staying afloat until then is no simple task. So far, we have cancelled or postponed 350 performances at a revenue loss of more than $20.5 million. Even with a federal payroll loan (PPP), operating cost reductions, salary cuts and furloughs for 75 percent of our staff, we still face many expenses during our closure. To help our curtain rise again if you can, I hope you will consider a contribution to our Road to Reopening Fund. Every contribution brings us a little closer to our next opening night. I can’t express deep enough thanks for this vital support. As long as we band together to keep the arts alive, I look forward to the day I can say to you all, “Welcome back to The Smith Center.”

AN INCLUSIVE THEATER EXPERIENCE Specially designed for audiences with disabilities, The Smith Center presented its 2nd sensory friendly performance of a Broadway touring production, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!”
Smith Center hosted its 8th annual Camp Broadway summer youth theater program, where 150 participating youths learned theater skills from top industry professionals.
The Smith Center presented a variety of matinee performances to 50,892 students and teachers — all at no cost to schools. This included a matinee of the Pulitzer-winning play “Driving Miss Daisy.”

The 2020 red-carpet ceremony for the Heart of Education Awards celebrating 800 CCSD teachers was sidelined, but The Smith Center adapted by surprising the 20 winners virtually. Each winner received a $5,000 award funded by The Rogers Foundation.
ROAD TO PREPARING FOR REOPENING To fully prepare for the day when The Smith Center can safely welcome all of its patrons back, the center’s leadership has been spearheading important new safety and sanitation programs in place under the guidance of health officials, including touch-less payment systems, electrostatic cleaners and other new safety measures and equipment. The Smith Center may be one of the last places in Las Vegas to reopen, but there is little doubt that it will open better than ever.
RED ALERT The Smith Center along with several valley locations joined with 58 cities across the country by taking part in "Red Alert RESTART” to bring attention to entertainment professionals who’ve been impacted by the closures. More than 68,000 local entertainment professionals have been displaced since the start of the pandemic.
ONGOING COSTS WHILE DARK Despite federal support and substantial salary cuts, furloughs for 75% of staff, and a 50% reduction in operating costs, The Smith Center must still pay a significant amount each month to keep the building safe, secure and operationally sound while preparing to reopen. Equipment must be monitored on a daily basis, and preventive maintenance and repairs must be performed whenever necessary. To prepare for getting shows back on the stage, The Smith Center’s reduced staff is diligently working to institute new industry protocols for everything from hair and wardrobe to doors and ventilation. Even before doors reopen, there is much behind-the-scenes work that is being done on a daily basis in order to schedule events, coordinate with national touring partners, plan marketing strategies, and keep patrons and supporters informed.
REOPENING THE ROAD TO REOPENING FUND Since The Smith Center’s stages and halls went dark by executive order, it has had to cancel every performance scheduled from March through December of this year, totaling more than $20.5 million in anticipated ticket revenue and resulting in a serious financial setback. In a good year, the center has to raise 25% of its budget through donations, grants, memberships and sponsorships. Now without any ticket sales, it must raise every dollar needed to sustain its facilities until patrons can safely return. As the center develops its comprehensive reopening plan, any added expenses for equipment and protocols to keep people safe — such as installing plexiglass barrier shields and adding new virtual education programming — will exceed our nonprofit’s traditional operating budget. The Road to Reopening Fund seeks communitywide support to ensure The Smith Center reopens and remains Southern Nevada’s Heart of the Arts for generations to come.
