YEAR IN REVIEW
It’s that time of year again to provide an annual update of our efforts, and I’m pleased to say The Smith Center for the Performing Arts has many significant accomplishments to report. We made tremendous strides in the 2015-2016 fiscal year with promoting the arts in education and establishing The Smith Center as a resource for new works. We also continued to make world-class performances accessible by generating more than 9,600 subscribers to the 2015-2016 Broadway Las Vegas® season and totaling nearly 285,000 tickets sold. The Smith Center has maintained ongoing priorities as a leading performing arts complex. Chief among these has included launching high-caliber new productions in Las Vegas that have the potential to go on and play elsewhere… perhaps even Broadway. Following on the heels of our successful adaptation of The Tempest in 2014 with Teller and the American Repertory Theater, we stepped up our efforts in 2016 to produce the all-new original musical IDAHO! The Comedy Musical. We are thrilled to share that the show garnered critical success from reviewers and audiences alike. We believe it has true potential to become a smash hit, and hope to see it live on beyond Las Vegas and appear in venues across the U.S. Big thanks to the Keith Boman Fund for Theater Development and the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation for their support to make these productions possible! IDAHO! wasn’t our only success. PBS shot a national special from our Cabaret Jazz venue during Alan Cumming’s performance in July 2016. The show will air nationally in November on PBS, and we hope this will serve as our pilot for an ongoing series of live shows for The Smith Center. You know it well that education is in our DNA at The Smith Center. This focus gained all new emphasis in May 2016, when The Smith Center hosted its inaugural The Heart of Education Awards, recognizing hundreds of outstanding teachers in Clark County. Although 21 finalists were honored on stage, more than 1,000 local educators were nominated for awards. I would like to give a special thanks to The Rogers Foundation for its partnership with us that will allow us to host The Heart of Education Awards for many years to come. Many additional sponsors played a key role in making these awards happen, including Wynn Las Vegas, Las Vegas Review-Journal, Switch, NV Energy, AEG Live, Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Tourneau and Cirque du Soleil. The Smith Center’s Education and Outreach Department also continued its many programs this past year. This included nearly 90,000 students and educators attending performances at The Smith Center, with an additional 40,000 experiencing in-school performances by local and visiting artists. I hope you are as excited as we are with The Smith Center’s ongoing growth and many accomplishments, none of which would be possible without the support of community members like you. We look forward to continuing to serve as Southern Nevada’s Heart of the Arts.

In May 2016, The Smith Center instituted a program to support education across all curriculum subjects—not just the arts—through its inaugural Heart of Education Awards. Throughout the Clark County School District, teachers were nominated for continuously going above and beyond for the education and well-being of their students. Twenty-one winners were given the coveted Heart of Education Award, each taking home $5,000 for themselves and another $1,000 to be used in their school for the purpose of their choice.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY The Smith Center will celebrate its fifth anniversary in March 2017, a promising sign of our development into an established fixture of the community. It’s fitting that we will enter this important year with another benchmark, welcoming our 2-millionth patron in late 2016 or early 2017. This impressive number demonstrates how residents across Southern Nevada have embraced the world-class performances we provide, and we will continue to explore new avenues to further engage with our audience members.

201 20165 –2016 –2017 A NEW TRADITION OF RECOGNITION On the heels of our successful launch of the The Heart of Education Awards, The Smith Center is already planning our second year of the program and examining new ideas to make this next installment even better. As a result of The Rogers Foundation’s significant investment in this valuable program, The Smith Center has a 10-year commitment of support for these awards, which will allow us to recognize many more outstanding teachers with awards of $5,000. We look forward to making this annual awards event a mainstay of the community, and we encourage students and schools to nominate their favorite teachers who maintain education as a top priority.
EMBRACING RISING PROFESSIONALS Aiming to bridge the gap with audience members 21 to 40 years old, The Smith Center recently launched the all-new FANFARE! networking and affinity group for young professionals. Focused on building membership in late 2016, the group will allow rising professionals in Southern Nevada to build a relationship with The Smith Center in a fun and engaging way, securing new art patrons for the future. Membership benefits will include an insider’s experience of the world-class performing arts complex, access to a broad network of community members who love the arts, and seasonal events exploring the arts and culture scene in Las Vegas. We recognize that many young professionals in Southern Nevada love the arts, and FANFARE! provides a new opportunity to forge a long-lasting relationship with them.
ONGOING SUSTAINABILITY Thanks to dedicated Members, residents throughout Southern Nevada continue to rely upon The Smith Center for a variety of services, including the opportunity to spend a night out for a memorable show, beautiful space to host events and ceremonies, valuable Education & Outreach programs for children and teenagers, and more. We take great pride in offering service excellence, but we rely on public support to maintain our efforts and our facility. With ticket sales covering only about 75 percent of our operating budget, the remaining 25 percent comes from Members. In the coming year, you can help us meet our goal to raise nearly $4 million to support the high-quality performances and programs you and so many others enjoy. By giving to The Smith Center, you play an important role in providing an important resource for our community.
