WILDCATS MADE A SPLASH AT 2025 FOAM BASH

On Aug. 29, Weber State University held its annual foam bash. Hundreds of participants made their way to the University Village parking lot to enjoy one of Weber State’s biggest events of the year.
“The Foam Bash is the biggest event of the school year,” Ashlynn Stokes, vice president of activities for Weber State University Student Association, said. “Last year, more than 2,000 people showed up.”
An event with this much anticipation takes some serious planning and time commitment, and WSUSA takes the Foam Bash very seriously. “We’ve been planning for about two months,” Stokes said. “We met every week, twice a week for an hour.”
After two months of deliberation, WSUSA came up with a lot of unique ways for participants to have fun. If students weren’t dancing on the giant dancefloor, attendees could also spend time playing yard games and enjoying
treats from all of the food trucks.
WSUSA decided to let members who have never done activities before decide on the theme. “It was a unanimous vote to do the Y2k,” Stokes said.
For new and returning students attending WSU, the Foam Bash offers an opportunity to meet and interact with fellow students. “I just want students to realize that when they come to the events, they can make friends too,” Stokes said.
When the doors first opened, it was very quiet, and attendees were rushing to get free food. About an hour into the event, the music was blaring, the foam was going and the crowd was excited.
“I like how loud the music is. I like when you can hear the music vibrate in your lungs, that’s my favorite part,” WSU senior Brooklyn Prispre said.
The music was blaring, and eventually, a noise complaint was filed. The bash continued on for another hour before things eventually started to die down. Eventually, the staff and crew decided to call it a night with the DJ announcing one last song.

BLOCK PARTY WELCOMES
FALL STUDENTS

At the beginning of every fall semester, Weber State University plans events to engage students in the university community and to familiarize them with the clubs, organizations and programs on campus. The annual Block Party is one such event that takes place the first Friday of the semester.
The Block Party offers students the opportunity to interact with the faculty, staff and fellow students who run the many booths displayed in the Stewart Bell Tower Plaza all the way down to Lindquist Hall. Students can play games, collect Weber State merchandise
or snack on treats as they stop at each booth.
“Well, I think it primarily just makes people aware that it exists. A lot of times, you just get caught up with everything else going on,” student Eric Stanley said. “You never even think about all the things that you have available until they put up a booth and have free Monsters in front of it.”
According to Stanley, due to the busy schedule of college students many are unaware of events taking place at Weber unless their friends suggest going with them. This can make it difficult for students to connect with the university community. Events like the Block Party remedy this by acting like a win-
dow into the university community to help students feel included and give them a sense of what the university can help them achieve.
“We connect students to hands-on learning experiences like leadership, mentoring, sustainability and undergraduate research. There’s a lot more, but the whole goal of these programs is in students learning those skills like communication, teamwork and critical thinking,” said Elizabeth Hatch, a staff member helping run the Wildcat Advantage Program.
There are many offices scattered throughout the Shepherd Union building that can be overlooked or missed if students don’t know
where or what to look for.
“I’m a sucker for free stuff, but I do feel like it’s a great way to walk around with friends and meet some new friends,” student Catie Wirz said.
Wirz said students can’t help but feel included in the Block Party event because to actively participate in it means that you have to socialize with others. Meeting new people isn’t mandatory to participate, but it’s almost unavoidable at campus events. To Wirz, the Block Party is more impactful to students than other campus events because it not only helps students meet new friends, but it also helps the university community meet the student.

Al inicio de cada semestre de otoño, la Universidad de Weber State planea eventos para involucrar a los estudiantes en la comunidad universitaria y para familiarizarlos con los clubes, organizaciones y programas en el campus. La fiesta anual del Block Party es uno de esos eventos que toma lugar el primer viernes del semestre.
La Block Party ofrece a los estudiantes la oportunidad de interactuar con la facultad, personal, y compañeros que dirigen los numerosos puestos expuestos en la Plaza del Campanario Stewart hasta el Lindquist Hall. Los estudiantes pueden jugar juegos, coleccionar mercancía de Weber State o comer golosinas mientras visitan cada puesto.
“Bien, creo que primordialmente solo hace que la gente sea consciente de que existe. Muchas veces, solo te ves envuelto en todo lo demás que está pasando,” dijo el estudiante Eric Stanley. “Nunca piensas acerca de todas las cosas que tienes disponible hasta que ponen un puesto y tienen Monsters gratis al frente.”

Wirz dijo que los estudiantes no pueden evitar sentirse incluidos en el evento Block Party porque participar activamente en él significa que tienes que socializar con otros. Conocer personas nuevas no es obligatorio para participar, pero es casi inevitable en los eventos del campus. Para Wirz, la Block Party es más impactante para los estudiantes que otros eventos del campus porque no solo ayuda a los estudiantes a conocer nuevos amigos, sino que también ayuda a la comunidad universitaria a conocer al estudiante.

WOMEN’S SOCCER GETS THREE WINS IN A ROW

After the victory against Oregon State University, Weber State University traveled home to face California State University, Bakersfield, North Dakota State University and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.
Weber State vs. Cal State
The Roadrunners started the game strong, with Daniela Osejo scoring in minute 12 to take the lead at Wildcat Soccer Field. They then maintained their 1–0 advantage into halftime. Weber had taken 10 shots in the first half but couldn’t find the net, yet the Wildcats stayed composed and carried their momentum into the second half.
Five minutes into the second half, Tenzi Knowles scored to tie the game up at one goal apiece. Five minutes later, Grace Kirby had the go-ahead goal to put the Wildcats in the lead and win the game. The Roadrunners lost their third game in a row.
Weber State vs. North Dakota
Kirby started where she left off against CSU Bakersfield, scoring in minute 24 to give Weber a 1–0 advantage. Four minutes later, Presley Ray joined in on the fun by scoring a goal herself. The Wildcats held the two-goal advan-
tage for only two minutes, with Tyreese Zacher scoring for the Bison to cut their deficit in half. Weber was outshot in the first half, 8–5, yet held onto the lead.
The second half was different. Weber’s defense became a brick wall, allowing their opponents to one shot the entire half. Then in minute 87, Brynlee Meyerhoffer put the Bison to bed, putting the final score to 3–1 and another Wildcat victory. Kirby ended the match with a goal and an assist as Weber won a gritty game where there were 31 fouls called throughout.
Weber State vs. Nebraska
Weber then traveled to Lincoln, Nebraska, to face the Cornhuskers. Nebraska put pressure on the Wildcats throughout the game, having 19 shots to only four taken by the Wildcats. Weber fought throughout the game until Reagan Raabe scored in minute 87 to win the game for Nebraska.
The Wildcats now have a record of (3–2). Over the previous two seasons, Weber won a total of three games. The women’s soccer team will now head to Boise, Idaho, to face off against Boise State University on Sept. 4. Then, on Sept. 11, they will travel up to Logan to face off against the Aggies of Utah State University in an in-state showdown.

WILDCATS FALL TO JAMES MADISON IN FOOTBALL OPENER

With 24,965 fans watching on, Weber State University’s football team came up short in their season-opening matchup with James Madison University, losing to the Dukes 45–10 at Bridgeforth Stadium on Aug. 30.
Far from Stewart Stadium in Harrisonburg, Virginia, the Wildcats were unable to provide an answer for JMU’s offense. Less than 8 minutes into the first quarter, junior quarterback Alonza Barnett III spotted a gap in Weber’s defensive line and ran for 11 yards to put the Dukes’ first touchdown on the board.
Before the quarter finished, Barnett helped double JMU’s lead with a 20-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Isaiah Alston.
Losing 14–0 at the start of the second quarter, WSU sought to revive its chances but turned the ball over on downs after eight plays and 38 yards. The Dukes’ subsequent 10-play, 57-yard drive ended with senior quarterback Matthew Sluka carrying the ball past the 1-yard line and in for a third touchdown. Sluka contributed again, less than four minutes later, with a 14-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Landon Ellis.
The Wildcats’ first touchdown of the year came from sophomore wide receiver Noah Kjar, who broke free from his defender and caught a 14-yard pass from redshirt-sophomore quarterback Jackson Gilkey in the end zone with 44 seconds left in the first half. Gilkey, who transferred from the University of Texas, San Antonio, this offseason, had his first start of his collegiate career. Senior kicker Sloan Calder made the extra point and added a 51-yard field goal at the beginning of the third quarter, reducing the deficit to 28–10. However, this was the end of Weber’s scoring, and the Dukes’ senior kicker Morgan Suarez capitalized on a 38-yard field goal after a 15-yard pass-interference penalty halted JMU’s drive progress to bring the score to 31–10.
The opening play of the fourth quarter saw junior running back Wayne Knight bypass the cluster of Wildcat defenders and rush 59 yards for another Dukes touchdown, bringing the score to 38–10 after Suarez’s kick. JMU’s thirdstring quarterback, freshman JC Evans, put the game to bed with 4:48 remaining as he ran for
5 yards into the left side of the endzone for the night’s final touchdown.
Gilkey managed 84 passing yards for the Wildcats while senior running back Zach Hrbacek, who transferred from Sam Houston State University over the offseason, led WSU in rushing yards with 39 and junior wide receiver Marcus Chretien posted a team-high of 22 receiving yards. In addition to Gilkey’s three interceptions, these numbers show the offensive struggles Weber faced when compared with JMU’s offense: Barnett threw for 130 yards, junior running back George Pettaway rushed for 99 and freshman wide receiver Michael Scott posted 38 receiving yards. Defensively, Weber similarly faltered and had little joy aside from sophomore cornerback Ishaan Daniels’ fumble recovery, sack on Barnett for the game’s only sack and senior safety Angel King’s game-high 11 tackles.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Sept. 6 to take on the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

WEBER STATE VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS WILDCAT INVITATIONAL

Weber State University women’s volleyball is off to a hot start in 2025, kicking off their season with wins over the University of Nevada (3–0), University of California, Irvine (3–1) and Southern Utah University (3–0).
“It really comes down to our serve receive. I thought Jayda (Tupea), Marly (Pratt), Ashley (Gneiting), Kaylie (Ray) did a really good job keeping us in system and not getting aced,” head coach Jeremiah Larsen said.
The Wildcats’ 3–0 start doesn’t even begin to explain how dominant they have been. They have won nine of their 10 sets across the three games, with their only set loss coming against a strong UC Irvine team.
“You see, Irvine’s a really good volleyball team,” Larsen said. “So that’s the team that we were worried about.”
However, Larsen isn’t letting complacency set in after the wins.
“Our net play needs to be shored up a little bit and just finding more consistency, being
the right type of team throughout the match.
I think we just have some weird little ebbs and flows that we got to kind of smooth out,” Larsen said.
One similar sentiment between coaches and players is the Wildcats’ strong offense.
“I think with each game, we were really focused on serving and passing, and our offense is good based off of that,” senior middle blocker Saane Munyer said.
The success will only help the ladies as they move forward with their season.
“I think we feel great. I think it’s good to see where we sit playing against other teams,” Munyer said. “It gives us a sense of confidence and to just know what we’re capable of. I’d say everyone’s feeling pretty good.”
Several Wildcats received tournament honors. Munyer and senior outside hitter Kaylie Ray were named to the All-Tournament team, while junior opposite hitter Rose Moore was named tournament MVP and the Big Sky volleyball offensive player of the week.
They will now travel to Saint George to play in the Utah Tech University Tournament from Sept. 4-6.

“Pienso que nos sentimos muy bien, creo que es bueno ver donde nos situamos al jugar contra otros equipos”, dijo Munyer. “ Nos da un sentimiento de confianza y nos deja saber que somos capaces, como dije todas nos sentimos muy bien”.
Varías jugadoras de las Wildcats recibieron reconocimientos de honor en el torneo, Munyer y la atacante exterior senior Kaylie Ray, fueron nombradas por el equipo all tournament, mientras que la atacante opuesta junior Rose Moore fue nombrada MVP del torneo y jugadora ofensiva de Voleibol de la semana de Big sky.
Ahora viajarán hacia Saint George para jugar un torneo en la Universidad Tecnológica de Utah del 4 al 6 de septiembre.
