Donald Trump was initiated as the newly elected president of the United States for the second time around noon on January 20, Monday, inside the Capitol Rotunda for the first time since 1985 due to frigid temperature, earning the second highest-rated inauguration day in history as about 24.6 million tuned in over major networks.

Viewership of the presidential event peaked at 34.4 million during the 12:15 quarter-hour across 15 networks, with Fox News leading by 10 million watchers.

American Broadcasting Company (ABC) garnered 4.7 million spectators, 4.4 million for National Broadcasting Company (NBC), Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) with 4.1 million, and Cable News Network (CNN) with just 1.7 million.

“The golden age of America begins right now,” Trump stated as he promised to suppress undocumented immigration, impose tariffs, increase domestic oil drilling, withdraw federal electric vehicle goals, declare that there are only two genders allotted at birth, and further plans. “All of this will change starting today,” he added. Several billionaires and tech executives, such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg, attended the installation. Numerous lawmakers and former living presidents were also present at the Rotunda. His supporters further anticipated the war's end in Ukraine, the settlement of conflicts at the border, and the control of inflation in the country.

Solons allot PhilHealth zero subsidy

Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) was given zero budget for 2025 by lawmakers, according to the approved 2025 budget released by the bicameral conference committee (bicam) on December 11, Wednesday, with PhilHealth to still continue providing entire benefits to members.

PhilHealth suggested P74.43 billion in subsidies for 2025 but was allotted zero. Chair of the Senate’s Finance Committee, Senator Grace L. Poe, along with Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero, supported the budget, claiming that the executive branch’s “reserve funds,” amounting to P500 to P600 billion, must be used first.

The non-existent budget violates the Universal Health Care Act (Republic Act

No. 11223, enacted in 2018); “reserve funds” are primarily for indirect contributors, also referred to as “premium subsidies” for the poor and seniors. The financial plan also breaches the Sin Tax Reform Acts of 2017 and 2019, as 80 percent of revenues from tobacco and sugar-sweetened beverages must be allocated to PhilHealth to support the Universal Health Care Act’s implementation.

“Rest assured, all PhilHealth benefits will continue to be paid and will even improve,” said Emmanuel R. Ledesma Jr., President and CEO of PhilHealth. With the P150 billion surplus funds from 2024’s budget, the branch’s members' benefits will still be sustained for 2025. Allocations for health services are set at P284 billion for this year by the corporate operating budget.

1.5M flock INC National Peace Rally

Manila Police District (MPD) confirmed at least 1.5 million Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) followers as of 10 a.m. have gathered at Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park, Manila, on January 13, Monday, as they held a National Rally of Peace amidst political rifts.

INC members who came from neighboring provinces of Cavite, Quezon, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, and Pampanga pleaded for unity and echoed President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s stand against Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment complaints, as she faces her third accusation regarding abuse of public funds, which she denied.

“There are many more things that our citizens need that

must be attended to. These will not be achieved if we all see taking place conflict. Perhaps our countrymen who also desire peace and want our leaders to take care of the needs of our nation will not contradict the opinion given by President Marcos Jr.,” stated Edwil Zabala, INC spokesperson. Malacañang also hoped that the national rally would resolve issues in the country.

Police and K-9 units were implemented in the area, and portable toilets were installed for the peace rally as preparation. The nationwide rally will be conducted in 13 sites, with a million of individuals expected by 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Officials contain weeks-long LA wildfire

As of Wednesday, January 22, 2025, the Hughes Fire has spread across 3,407 acres north of Los Angeles, forcing the evacuation of an estimated 18,600 residents near Castaic Lake.

The area remains under a red flag warning due to strong, dry winds that continue to heighten fire risks. Los Angeles County officials issued evacuation orders for the Castaic Lake community, warning of an “immediate threat to life” from the Hughes Fire. The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) reported significant progress in containing two

major wildfires in the region.

The Easton Fire, which scorched 14,021 acres east of Los Angeles, is now 91% contained, while the Palisades Fire, affecting 23,448 acres on the west side, is 68% contained. Both fires began on January 7.

So far, these wildfires have killed 28 people, destroyed approximately 16,000 structures, and displaced 180,000 residents. Private forecaster AccuWeather estimates the damage and economic losses to exceed $250 billion.

Israel-Hamas ceasefire takes effect in Gaza

The pause of the devastating war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip was deemed effective on Sunday, January 19, after Hamas delivered to Israel a list of three female captives to be released as part of the deal.

The handing of the list of captives to Israel had been delayed and caused a nearly three-hour postponement of the ceasefire declaration. Hamas attributed the delay to a ‘technical’ reason, without specifying what those were.

Two hours after the deadline,

ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has started.

“We confirm that the names of the three captives who will be released today have been handed over to the Israeli side. They are three Israeli citizens, one of whom holds Romanian citizenship and the other [with] British citizenship. Thus, the ceasefire has begun,” Al-Ansari said in a statement. Secretary Sonny Angara, Department of Education (DepEd) announced gradual implementation of the revised curriculum for senior high school (SHS) for school year 2025-2026 on January 22, Wednesday, Angara phases execution to decongest current K to 12 program.

VP SARA'S IMPEACHMENT: DEMOCRACY DEMANDS ACCOUNTABILITY

Vice President Sara Duterte has been a focal point of controversy in Philippine politics in recent months for the alleged misdemeanors during her administration.

These allegations have led to multiple impeachment complaints backed by youth leaders, educators, government workers, health professionals, and multi-sectoral organizations being filed against her. These initiatives serve as a great indicator that the country’s democracy will always stand to hold the nation’s leaders accountable and to restore the public trust towards the leadership in the Philippines.

The first impeachment complaint, supported by former senator Leila de Lima, was filed on December 2, 2024, raising issues on Duterte’s alleged misuse of public funds, her public meltdowns, and her inactions on major problems in the country. Two days later, a second impeachment complaint was filed by the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan for the VP’s alleged “betrayal of public trust.” The third dismissal charge against her was followed on December 19, 2024 from several Catholic priests, civil group leaders, and lawyers for the aforementioned allegations and other high crimes. These cases demonstrate the

Filipino’s dissatisfaction toward Duterte’s governance and her failure to meet the needs of the country.

The complaints cited multiple alarming grounds to validate the need to impeach Duterte from her position.

This includes the misuse of Php612.15 million in confidential funds allocated to the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education, which was allegedly spent on unknown reasons and justified using fabricated documents and fictitious recipients. In addition, complainants pointed out Duterte’s controversial behavior, with incidents such as sending threats to the president and her refusal to cooperate during hearings, which continues to destroy the public trust in her leadership. This lack of transparency and accountability cannot be ignored, especially in a leader of her level.

Multiple parties in support of the complaints have been doing their best to put the impeachment into effect, with them launching signature drives and urging Congress to initiate on the matter. Despite

these efforts, there were still those who opposed the decision, including President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who perceived this impeachment as a waste of time and “would not make a difference to even one single Filipino life.” Along with the President, at least 1.5 million Iglesia Ni Cristo followers conducted a national peace ra lly on January 13, 2025, to echo the president’s statement. The Filipinos have voiced their opinions that this initiative will just serve as a distraction from other ongoing issues in the country that need to be resolved. Moreover, the House of Representatives’ stalling to act upon the complaints raises concerns about the government’s lack of commitment in holding officials accountable.

In conclusion, the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte serves more than just legal battles; it is a testament to the nation’s willingness to fight for the integrity of their government. Dismissing these complaints could only undermine the country’s lifelong battle with corruption and the unfair

double standards for these public officials. The outcome of this impeachment would not only determine Duterte’s future in politics but also whether the Philippines’ democratic principles are still true and strong. For a nation

As young campus journalists, we honor the inspiration it has given us to pursue journalism as a means of contributing to our nation’s growth and progress. Like The Settlers, we hope to see it rise again—like a phoenix

TikTok has built its reputation as one of the biggest social media world, with accessible and content being a hub create viral videos communities. concerns about its China and national risks caused the US government to shut the app nationwide on January 18, 2025. This ban devastated many US users, they were forced to leave behind communities and relationships they had built in survey conducted Research Center that 61% of US adults TikTok are opposed to decision.

With the looming ban, TikTokers decided to use moments to come their most popular being fake and staged. trend’s

lighthearted intentions, many of their followers expressed their displeasure towards these revelations. A lot of criticism came from the fact that these influencers claimed their content was real and genuine to attract the support of their audience. Additionally, these acts were seen as a desperate attempt to gain relevancy before TikTok’s disappearance, which people deemed very low. These confessions have landed influencers in hot water with their audience.

One of them was Lexi Hidalgo, who has amassed 2.7 million followers with her ‘coffee chats’ and workout videos, which her viewers’ loved. However, her video revealing her secrets caused quite an outrage, with many of her fans calling her out as phony and deceitful.

Hidalgo’s situation, along with others who partake in this trend, shows the importance of transparency and honesty for netizens who actively consume content in social media.

This incident highlights

the overwhelming issue about the prevalence of fakeness on the internet. With an overly saturated market filled with fabricated content, people tend to value those who have genuineness and honesty more. According to a survey conducted by Social Media Today, 86% of people believe that authenticity holds a significant role in deciding what to like and support in social media. Hence, making authenticity crucial for creating strong connections and building trust with widespread audiences.

To conclude, this TikTok trend emphasizes the necessity for authenticity in the realm of social media. To many inspiring influencers and to those who already have a large fanbase, this situation should be a realization for all that realness and sincerity are what truly make a community strong. Especially on the internet, which is filled with misinformation and fake personalities, the truth should always prevail.

Sick-quel Syndrome: Where More Does Not Mean Better

If someone is given a second chance for something, they will go all the way around to paint a new image for their future—just like in the movie industry, where people tend to believe that having a film's sequel gives it a better picture than the original.

However, while the past few years were filled to the brim with brand-new sequel teasers of the renowned iconic movies, fans are neither impressed nor satisfied with the outcome they have received, igniting a fiery debate all over social media platforms.

Recently, famed movies such as Inside Out, Despicable Me, Joker, and Dune released their following sequels last year, 2024. The feedback received towards the said film continuations are undeniably comparable with their original work. Morris Raskin, editor-in-chief for The Spectator, stated, “The main problem with sequels as a whole is that they’re almost always less focused on the movie’s plot itself and are focused on the money and attention that the project will

gain,” generalizing most of the sequels that have been made throughout the years. Moreover, most movie productions are astounded by the pressure of the original work, which leads to the construction of a sequel of the primary movie despite not needing it. Due to the forced idea of making a “part two” out of a movie, the value of the piece itself is being downgraded. If viewers liked the original movie, there is no doubt that they will pay for the second with eagerness. According to a survey conducted at Don Jesus Gonzales High School, 80% of the randomly selected 10 students interviewed were found to be against the creation of movie sequels. However, there are some cases that are

unavoidable, such as people who are more fond of the sequels rather than the original work itself. From the hype of getting something that they have been wanting, when it comes to facing the aftermath, it does nothing but follow a huge dismay deep inside.

Frankly, sequels are nothing but a disappointment—changing and continuing things that are unnecessary and are not even broken or wrecked.

To wrap it all up, it is a good thing that sequels exist for such movies that have insufficient and incomplete story plots.

On the other hand, sequels should be limited to avoid overwhelming the viewers, especially for those outstanding movies that already

touched the line momentously. Movie productions should also stop being tightfisted; instead, they should start considering the voices of those people who support them in order to maintain proper reviews and feedback for the future projects that they will be executing. After all, a movie is only as good as the view an individual brings to it.

Dear Editor,

I would like to point out that the resources that are stated in your article do not state a clear and proper verification, and instead, the things that are being thrown away all throughout the work are entirely “allegations” only which are not yet proven to be true or confirmed making it no sense and valid reason to ride on the boat. As Supreme Secondary Learner’s Government (SSLG) president of Don Jesus Gonzales High School, playing such a vital role demands critical decision-making skills considering every corner perspective with no subjectivity but with a handful of evidence as the foundation and basis in every action. For me, prioritizing the Vice President’s mental status amidst the chaos of the country is much more important; leading a small group is already difficult – leading a country is harder.

LagGing Behind: Internet Challenges in DJGHS

The advancement of technology in Philippine education cannot be overstated; especially in today’s landscape, stable internet connectivity is no longer a luxury but a necessity.

However, in the case of Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS), the lack of Wi-Fi on the campus has halted its students from fully embracing the progressing 21st-century education. This absence highlights the urgent need for internet connectivity towards aiding the drawbacks of DJGHS students.

This problem of the availability of online networks in education is felt throughout public schools around the country. According to a study from the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the Philippines continues to fall behind its neighboring countries when it comes to information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures. Additionally, data from the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) reveals that only 1.8 percent of 47,421 public schools nationwide had access to free Wi-Fi, with the quality and speed of connections varying significantly. These results show the issue is not only a problem dealt with by DJGHS but by many schools nationwide.

Students of DJGHS have expressed their troubles with insufficient internet connection around the area. This is evidently highlighted where students scramble to find a stable connection in order to participate in activities where being online is required. And even with Wi-Fi present, the poor quality and speed of connection come into play to hinder their learning experience. Furthermore, the barriers between the communication of learners and educators become

SELLING SAMPAGUITA AND SYMPATHIES

f you’re a Filipino who has commuted jeepneys and went to urbanized areas, more likely it is that you’re familiar with the sights of people handing you these familiar envelopes to help them financially. You’ve probably had your parents tell you to just ignore them; their eyes full of sadness, pleading for help that any amount will be very much appreciated, and the next thing you feel is a creeping, immense guilt and pity for these people. Tales and sights of seeing beggars are pretty usual, yet with the recent incident featuring the very common sampaguita garlands had this culture of “pamamalimos,” or mendicancy was put on the society and media pedestal.

Mendicancy refers to the act of begging as a primary mean of financial support, and anything outside of the ordinary to spot mendicants almost anywhere. Beggars, as would call, would typically simply just kindly ask for anything you could give them, but have made use of variety of different tactics, going to extra lengths to make their hustle bountiful, and most commonly, it is through selling you something humble, along with pitiful stories or their hopes and aspirations.

The recent incident involving a young woman selling sampaguita or jasmine garlands outside SM Megamall located in Mandaluyong has sparked widespread debate. In a viral that went viral, shows a juvenile girl selling these sampaguita garlands in the mall, and security officer sternly telling the poor girl to scram off as illegal vendors were gone after in mall's area, and it escalating to the student hitting the security guard with her products. Initially, reports portrayed her as a poor juvenile student striving to support her education evidently shown by her traditional elementary or high school looking uniform, until further scrutiny by netizens has cast doubt on this narrative and even reaching the press. Philippine National Police (PNP) has identified the vendor as Marie, which turns out to 18-year old first year medical technology student with a scholarship, according to the Mandaluyong City police chief Col. Mary Grace Madayag in an interview, commenting that a smart girl and that she is striving to make ends meet. A lot of people online had given commentaries, such as that the security officers should be more humane in warding off vendors, to talking about these mendicants and vendors being a group of syndicate accusing the ‘sampaguita girl’ of being a member, which was proven to be false the PNP.

While compassion and sympathy is a natural response to these people, we should in mind that it is crucial to recognize that giving directly to individuals on the streets can sometimes do more harm than good. After all, the Presidential Decree 1563 prohibits begging Philippines, aiming to address the exploitation inherent in organized begging. Despite enforcement remains inconsistent, as we could see in the cities, or even when you're any public space. The presence of beggars selling the common Filipino Catholic staple sampaguita garlands, often reflects deeper systemic problems that require comprehensive solutions beyond individual acts of charity as these can preserve these exploitative practices just discourage individuals from seeking actual sustainable livelihoods. While it is possible that they lie about what they need the money for, but it is undeniable that they do the money. That is why we should direct assistance through organizations to ensure aid reaches to those in genuine need.

While individual stories can draw strong emotional responses from us, urge us to help people in need with what we could, it's important to approach these situations with a critical perspective. We should remember about the socio-economic factors in the picture, and supporting systemic solutions can lead to more effective and compassionate outcomes for these mendicant vendors, and to everyone else. We know that life is hard for everyone else, especially when the prices soar as the time goes, and as much as being charitable feels like the right path of action to do as we are ought to help those in need, this will just perpetuate mendicancy.

prevalent due to the inaccessibility of online networks inside the campus. Aside from the students, the young journalists of ‘The Settlers’ have faced the same problems in online accessibility, especially in finding news and information.

The importance of internet networks plays a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education of a nation, with its massive mass of knowledge making it the best platform for learning. However, past initiatives like the Free Internet Access in Public Places Act and DepEd Internet Connectivity Project, which aimed to resolve the problem; although it seemed to have not come into full effect, making it inevitable to call for more effort and action. Additionally, the Php12 billion budget cut for the Department of Education’s computerization program serves as a roadblock to settle the ongoing matter.

To sum it all up, Don Jesus Gonzales High School needs to catch up with the advancements of the digital age, so as not to leave students behind with the implementation of ICT in education. With the importance of the internet showing its necessity for all learners, the school should start executing the implementation of a free Wi-Fi network across the campus. It is time to prioritize internet infrastructure to ensure students can learn and engage in an increasingly technology-based world.

Philippine Education's Trial -and-Error Experimentation

Oneof the biggest education problems that the Philippines is facing is the sheer fact of being continuously criticized for being placed 77th out of 81 countries on the results of the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). However, the administration of the country seemed to have an inverse plan in solving the matter when it comes to the poor performance of its students in taking the test, as the second hearing of House Bill (HB) No. 11213 also known as “An Act Providing Education Pathways for Basic Education Students” was ratified to the public on January 22, 2025 Wednesday during The House Representative’s voting assembly. Looking back, the Republic Act 10533 wherein the K to 12 program was first implemented in school year 2012-2013. The reform aims to help students prepare for college and education competencies to keep up with the competitive evolution system of education worldwide. According to a Pulse Asia survey conducted in 2022, 56% of Filipinos are satisfied with the K to 12 program, leaving the majority of locals to wonder why such a bill is being embraced by the authorities.

It would provide significant complications carrying out a bill that provides an option for learners to skip senior high school (SHS) that will instead give students a choice to either move directly into a university or in a technical vocational program. The alarming purpose of the bill made the Filipinos concerned about what would happen to the legacy

that the Grades 11 and 12 had built. On a positive note, making this bill a reality will surely create convenience for many, specifically in minimizing the process of acquiring higher education that employers prefer. However, in terms of addressing one of the Philippines’ crises, such as succeeding in the ranking of the country in PISA, it is beyond doubt that K to 12 programs will contribute drastically. The first batch who underwent in SHS curriculum was observed by the advocacy group Philippine Business for Education (PBED) who led a study wherein the end of the study showed that 93% of the competencies such as critical thinking and problem-solving skills that the nation massively lacked were fulfilled. Declining what once used to be a vision is an impractical thing to do, especially when all it provides is a gift of knowledge that is unparalleled by anything. To end things better, handling the systematic education in the Philippines has always been a position of standing above the thinner and fragile ice. After all, administrators must reconsider all aspects that will be affected by the implementation and changes of the system. Filipino learners should receive the equal and proper service treatment that they deserve; discovering everything that is lying beneath the world of knowledge just like everyone does, no matter how long or how hard it will cost. For the longer and harder someone works for something, the better they will receive when they get to it.

Twinkle,

TRUSTING TRUTH TRANSCENDER: World Disregarding Journalistic Freedom

twinkle, little star, they would rather be called a liar. In this generation, politicians have caused a huge controversy about incognitive fund disseminations. They would rather give it for irrelevant governmental programs than to integral platforms. The government would rather give the money off to officials who would chomp it all and put it in their personal vault than to helpful groups.

For so long, these problems have been kept behind the shadows, covered behind bittersweet, impunitive words of politicians. By this means, why choose nonsense, never-ending promises than providing the needs of truth bearers?

Recently, the Cable News Network (CNN) has caused a worldwide media chaos due to its unanticipated cease. Although there are lots of organizations that promise to help it, I do not think that the advocacies of worldwide organizations are enough to be called worthy and effective. They would rather let it discontinue serving people, watch its bright logo fade than to light it up again. It is no secret that they are trying, but their efforts are not enough to be called their best; they are neglecting important platforms. Politicians all over the world keep on pushing human rights, “economic growth,” and substantial camaraderie, however, their promises are full of unrealistic lies, letting the press freedom deteriorate. In the Philippines, the journalistic press freedom index was greatly disregarded by the country.

In a recent report submitted by the 2024 Press Freedom Index, it was evident that the human rights they keep on pushing has never been implemented. They keep on hauling for change, yet the result only yielded 43.36%. They keep on pushing for press rights, yet if they will dig down the hearts of journalists, they are more genuine than those politicians’ intentions people tend to promote. Why would you treat politicians like Gods, yet when it comes to individuals who really transcend the limits, you fluctuate in supporting them? Take ABS-CBN as an example, they let the platform die, knowing that their news delivery mode has been one of the most trustworthy media in the country. They rather watch boring, useless, cheesy shows on different sites rather than clenching their hands for a change in the journalistic world. However, when an issue about it arises, they will be criticizing it firstly, but in reality, they do not know anything. Stop being like a weed that just blooms anywhere whenever it wants to, hoping for it to get picked. That mindset is very irrelevant.

As a journalist that cannot help but to scratch my head whenever an issue like this arises, it is difficult information to process. They would tell their opinion about the bankruptcy of CNN, will act like they know each reason on why it stopped, yet they are too ignorant for them to act shocked, and would post on the internet, barking about its sudden cease. What makes you different from the politicians you trust? They would rather fund well-rounded private schools all over the world than to provide the needs of journalistic institutions. What do you want the future to be?

Fire the Corrupt! Literally

IThis kind of mindset really stresses my mind. Politicians want their money to just revolve around them, making sure that the tax money of people will go straight into their pockets. This infuriating reality is not a new concept to the world anymore, yet citizens of the Philippines act like they do not know a thing. They act ignorant. Just when they receive one envelope from politicians, their perspective would change. It is time to change this way of thinking, people. Even if hypothetically, we will do it in the future, we need to stop this nonsense and push through advocacies that would help little organizations go back on track.

CNN’s bankruptcy and ABS-CBN’s shutdown is a testament of this generation’s twisted, wicked beliefs. While the hands of politicians stain from the trace of their corruption, people still enjoy the money they receive as reward for their so-called “good deeds.” If the solution is in the means of cutting off the generational influence of these kinds of politicians to fund journalism, then no matter what, do it.

n a country where politicians are getting too naughty with their hands— the idea of a bill that would outright, literally fire corrupt these politicians sounds a most too good to be true. Just imagine, a public servant caught red-handed in the taxpayers’ pockets, playing God with their power, and instead of a wrist-slap apology, they’re booted out of office, and maybe even out of this world. While it may sound hilariously brutal, I, for one, think it’s about time, after all, politics in the Philippines has ironically become less about public service and more about a high-stakes game of who can outsmart the system the longest after fighting for our own sovereignty for what, hundreds of years, thanks to the proposed House Bill 11211, or the Death Penalty for Corruption Act. This bill imposes death by firing squad for officials convicted of corruption, filed by Zamboanga Representative Khymer Olaso at the House of Representatives. It’s no secret that many treat politics as a playground, maybe even a circus. A ticket to privileges and occasional “mismanaged budgets,” or the infamous, sly “confidential funds.” The sad reality is that for these individuals, politics isn’t a solemn responsibility, but a fiesta where they get to be the guest of honor. They smile big, shake hands, make empty promises, and let their titles command the blind loyalty of their supporters. It’s a brilliant scheme, really. Why work hard when you can just charm your way into power by dancing and singing jolly and let the privileges, popularity, and paychecks roll in, am I right? “Work smarter, not harder” indeed.

WHOse Loss Is It: US Leaves Philippine Health in

nother day, another controversial decision led by a foreign country that will sink the Pearl of the Orient Seas deeper into the ocean of catastrophe. For long, the Philippines has been subject to relying on foreign affairs to keep the country afloat, however, with the United States (US) pulling out from the World Health Organization (WHO), many nations, including ours, will be affected greatly. US President Donald J. Trump withdrew the country from the WHO after his complaints about their contributions to the agency being ‘burdensome’, despite the country being the 9th richest country as of September 2024, according to the International Monetary Fund. How does this exactly concern the Philippines? The US is the top donor of the organization, and many of the Philippines’ health-related programs are supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). With them pulling out of funding, the initiatives will be halted. Our country's government cannot even segregate its insufficient budget into sectors efficiently, those officials will not be able to fund those projects.

Of course, I am not saying that the US should be babying the Philippines as their responsibility, but now this leaves us in a dilemma where our economy will further go down the drain, along with the healthcare situation we have right now. No, this does not mean the end. After all, we can still hope that the governors are able to make a sensible resolution for this economically threatening hurricane that’s about to storm the healthcare sector. Even after all of what is said, I honestly have a lot of trust issues when it comes to the Philippines’ administration. After everything they have done, being shocked would be an understatement when they actually do something good for the nation. When seeing their past mistakes, waiting for those foolish dogs to tackle this risk gets me anxious. All we need right now is a glimmer of hope, a push that the government can finally prove they can make an actually good decision for the better of the country. A journalist could only wish, not only for myself, but for the people.

Speaking of charm, Filipinos seemingly have a peculiar habit of treating politicians like celebrities— no, scratch that, saints. Faces with flashy smiles are plastered on every available surface, nooks, and crannies; campaign jingles chanted like mantras, and campaigning feels like marketing. People will defend their favorite candidates with unwavering passion when little do they know that these politicians couldn't bother to genuinely care anymore less about them had it not been for another single digit they'll give to get and keep them up there. It’s almost as if these public officials are doing us a favor just by simply existing. And unfortunately, as long as this culture of blind admiration— no, devotion, continues, or as I'd like to call it, “The pied piper kind of political dynamic,” corruption will always have a cozy home in our government offices.

Confusion Creates Curiosity : The

Philippines’ Blind Eye to SexEd
SOPHIA MAE D. TUAZON

OnJanuary 10, a video featuring public figures went viral for their shocking and controversial takes on the possible mandatory implementation of comprehensive sex education in both public and private schools across the Philippines, garnering over 280,000 views. They state it may go against Filipino morale, but what part of sex safety and information goes against such values?

As a future voter who probably just sighs at every news about another political clownery, it's not even shocking anymore. Just baffling by just how many people love to be a politician's lap dog. If we can’t break free from this mentality, or maybe even tradition, then maybe, just maybe, a little legislative slap in the face is exactly what we need. A bill that allows the immediate firing of corrupt politicians would certainly put their flashy smiles upside down. Gone would be the days of endless legal loopholes and public sympathy tours, but instead see the much-needed rejuvenation of our governance. Usually I’d prefer a humane approach in solving issues, but if fear is the only thing that works, then let’s give them something to be scared of, which is doing their job accordingly.

However, a big question is yet to be asked. Would our beloved politicians really let such a bill pass and control them? After all, supporting a law that could instantly kick them from their air conditioned facilities would be kind of like turkeys voting for Christmas. It’s hard to imagine a scenario where those in power willingly tighten the noose around their own necks; I mean, even if hypothetically we were in their shoes, we'd likely veto it too. They’ll certainly find ways to bury it under new bureaucratic scandal nonsense, or just kill it early. After all, self-preservation is the first rule of Philippine politics.

With the numbers of teenage pregnancy adding up more and more each day, it has caused concern enough for the Philippine government to finally step in. Proper sex education for all—including private schools—would be quite the big step in educating the youth in preventing unsmart decisions with unsavory results, as it states in the House Bill 79, or the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill. However, it shook some of the Filipinos, angrily shaking their fists in resistance to this decision, agreeing that it is inappropriate and will cause hypersexuality, which I believe is plain ignorant. The lack of sex education is the reason why the statistics for early pregnancy are so high in the first place.

However, just because the odds are against it, it shouldn't mean that the public should stop demanding for accountability. Even if this bill doesn’t pass, it’s a wake-up call— a reminder that public office is a privilege, not an entitlement, and abusers should be removed as easily as they entered. If our leaders refuse to clean up their act on their own accord, then it’s only fair that we take the matters into our own hands. Legally, of course.

At the end of the day, corruption persists because we allow it to. The same fingers that will mark our ballots and elect them hold the very same power to turn the tables. We’ve enabled it through unconditional loyalty, complacency, taking elections merely a formality, because it's already ingrained within us that things will never change up there, but, they could. What if, for once, politicians feared the people they claim to serve? A bill like this might seem drastic, but drastic times call for drastic measures. If some political careers must end abruptly for the greater good, well, so be it.

In the video, they show documents from the World Health Organization (WHO) dating back to 2010 affirming that children aged zero to four would be taught about masturbation, and those aged six to nine would be educated about sexual rights. Luckily, senator Risa Hontiveros—the one who proposed the bill—assured that such standards would not be followed, instead done in an age appropriate and culturally sensitive manner. spite of this statement, many still surprisingly believe that teaching kids about reproduction dangers of unsafe sex would be against Filipinos’ Christian values. It is honestly so mind blowing much more unbelievable these claims get. The Philippines is facing a serious problem that needs to be lessened, and still insist on covering children’s eyes from sex education, which they believe is the most sinful thing ever, for the sake of keeping them ‘pure’. Sex education has purpose, and it is to guide the younger generation to acknowledge what is what their rights are, and what to

What are your insights towards artificial intelligence being used in educational contents?

A SwordDouble-Edged toward the Society

In a fleeting world where artificial intelligence (AI) evolutions are side by side, people tend to lean too much to it. It is true that it makes the work of individuals easier and more convenient, but people seem to overly take advantage of the use of it. With all means leads to a question, “Does AI innovate or deteriorate societal knowledge?”

AI is an evolving technology that tries to imitate human intelligence through the use of machinery. The students, particularly at the high school level, have the most use of AI tools in their tasks. According to Dr. Jeff Schiel, “A little less than half of the 4,006 students surveyed responded that they had used AI tools in their schoolwork; the survey marks 46% out of 100%.” Leaving all the work and knowledge to the machinery, conquering all the skills that a person is supposed to learn, leaves humanity as a useless living in the world.

Particularly, one of the newest and trending tools that has noticeably been widely used by people is the newly published Meta AI. This, along with the other different tools such as Chat Generative Pre-Trained Transformer (ChatGPT), Cici AI, etc., are just one of the thousands of AI tools. They are used often by humankind. Most of the reason for these usages is to gain and form an answer for their assignment, task, or work that has been assigned to them. Subsequently, this gave the teachers additional work by having to scan the outputs of the students to ensure all of it was done by them.

Furthermore, AI serves the students as if it is the answer key on the back of a self-learning module. However, just like how the teachers ask their students not to look nor copy the answers key, the more they disobey and manipulate it. As a consequence, student development is being slowly decreased which results in minimal knowledge in academic to the machineries To is undeniably especially towards is also undeniably humans use inappropriate rather a good situations such information as a ‘copy and or work of literature. possible to by means of materials such newspapers, to gather information idea for the worked on. and treasure take away.

'EXTRAJUDICIAL KILLINGS': Duterte’s Bloody Regime

The “War on Drugs,” an advocacy of The Philippines’ former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, is seen as a disturbing controversy that the country has faced. Amidst his term up-to-date, deceased bodies appearing on every corner of the streets were viewed as a deranged warning. Recently, a glimpse of hope flickered as the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee held a hearing against the activism to emphasize and promote that the extrajudicial killings (EJK) have reached the point of being a crime against humanity.

According to a research report conducted by The Asia Foundation from 2001 to 2010, a total of 305 EJK incidents with 390 victims in the country were recorded, but only 56% of the incidents have been filed in court. The rest of the assassinations remained unsolved and the number of victims climbed as the War on Drugs was effectively advocated throughout the country. Based on the statistics of Human Rights Watch, approximately over 12,000 Filipinos have died, but only 2,555 of the killings have been attributed to the Philippine National Police (PNP). As a result, numerous individuals raised their concerns to Senator

Risa Hontiveros, who had a fiery dispute alongside Duterte in the said senate hearing, filed a senate resolution urging the Malacañan Palace to fully cooperate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) in probing the EJK cases. On the other hand, the palace retorted to cooperate and would not stop the ICC from meddling in exchange for achieving proper and equal jurisdiction.

Artificial Intelligence can be used education, but some students on it too much. This results in the student’s intelligence and creativity.

Nevertheless, Rodrigo Duterte, along with his allies, defended his advocacy that can be remembered as being involved in EJK by stating, “I kill to protect; I did what I had to do, and whether you believe it or not, I did it all for the sake of my country,” in the held public senate hearing. However, it does not conceive a valid reason to cut human lives to acquire peace and order. And the fact that most of the individuals who are killed are just “alleged” offenders did not make their way under an investigation and were not given the chance to speak for themselves—for the truth. Truly, the issue voices inhumanity regarding the condition of human rights in the Philippines.

think it's a great tool to have in your arsenal. You can use it for reviewers, questions that are hard to answer, etc. However, they're being used as a cheat code instead and they make lazy workers deprive the supposedly creative minds.

All things considered, in an adventure, the journey is more valuable than the destination itself— process over results. Things like that should be what ought to be on the leaders’ minds in leading the path that their citizens will walk up to. It is not a matter of considering what's most favorable for the majority or most, nothing except for a righteous act that should be done regardless of quantity or quality. The truth that undeniably aches must be the one that will ultimately prevail.

The students rely on it too much; a supposed assisting tool became a wall that students depend on— which is wrong. AI requires a crucial inspection to verify the accuracy it provides towards the demanders. The sources that AI gathers for you can’t distinguish the fake ones from the truth.

Born to Triumph Over Ashes of Yesterday: Hope of Tomorrow

As the Phoenix ascends from its ashes, the echoes of flapped wings and the heat coming from its burning body replies into the thirst for an awakening. Across the horizons of Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS), a sonata of a new beginning tunes into a melodious song humming onto its learners. While other publications are yearning to improve their journalistic reputation, The Settlers, DJGHS’ official English school publication, chooses to start anew amidst a rapidly-changing status of campus journalism. With its members’ bleeding pens, the amplification of unheard odysseys continues to be louder amidst a cacophonous society.

After the long hiatus of school paper issues, The Settlers school paper adviser (SPA) for the school year 20242025, Mr. Daniel Reyes, is eager to provide the organization with better treatment by establishing a brand-new integrity for the publication. Through intense grit and determination, what looked like a shot in the dark was turned into a one-ofa-kind team consisting of a newly-formed editorial board and staff writers who also help in creating a quality school news delivery modality.

Over the recent months, the reestablishment of The Settlers has continuously escalated in progress. With the help of Ms. Trisha Mae Chu, Ms. Alaine Rose Guevarra, and other teacher coaches, the spirit of a genuine campus journalism continues to embrace students, marking them with the takeaways of being truth bearers. As they strive more to provide a quality service, works outside their writing capability that amplify unheard societal echoes and unseen truths will always reflect what is inside their young, journalistic heart.

The scope of the publication does not only stop at competitions. Its editorial board—mainly led by Editors-in-Chief Dhemzel Khaele Mendoza, Alisha Ysabelle Atchico, and Wina Mae Yumul—followed by the senior editors of each category, are ardent in keeping the dissemination of information truthful and trustworthy by doing thorough fact-checking on published articles. Their hard work is a testament that the hidden societal stories they are trying to publicize are worthy of being sentiments of hope and a lifelong journey to success.

The road that The Settlers has paved over its educational trajectory has not been a smooth ride. However, the echoes of determination and the pondering pulsation of eagerness is what makes the organization unique. Through the reestablishment of the publication, the voices that were left unchartered by the society were turned into a living

8 young women known as the popular P-pop group "BINI", gives their aspiring determination to achieve goals beyond different perspectives.

Billboard Philippines

What started as a dream for eight determined young women has exploded into a full-blown phenomenon. The scintillating lights, roaring crowds, and trending music videos often define the rise of a popular P-pop group, but behind every moment of splendor is a story of sacrifice, grit, and unyielding determination.

Long before they were gracing stages across the world and achieving millions of views on YouTube, the members of Bini were just young girls with far-reaching dreams. They joined ABSCBN’s Star Hunt Academy, a thorough training program influenced by the K-pop training system.

“We came from different backgrounds and places, but we all had the

same goal; to make it in P-pop. It wasn’t an easy ride— there were days when we felt like giving up but we all knew this was something we wanted badly, so we kept pushing ourselves,” says Bini Jhoanna Robles, the group’s leader, during their interview at Magandang Buhay. Like many aspiring artists, Bini faced the cruel realities of the entertainment industry even before their special debut.

There were times when the future seemed unsure, especially during the pandemic, which delayed their first song release plan.

During their time as trainees, the group lived by a strict schedule— starting early in the morning, they would engage in vocal training sessions, spend hours in dancing, and even undergo physical activities to build the stamina and strength necessary for performing. Bini

FILLING THE VOID: Legalization of Same-sex Marriage

Is this what they call... freedom? As colors flew all over Thailand’s vicinity, flags of race were also raised as they commemorated the result of endless shouts for rights and screams of desperation. While others take 2025 as their lucky year, it might have had a different meaning to Thai citizens as their long-awaited “Marriage Equality Bill” finally came into effect. January 23, 2025, filled an integral void as it fulfilled many Thai’s lifelong dreams of marrying someone they wish to live the rest of their lives with—someone whom they love

genuinely despite gender similarities. 1,839 same-sex couples were married the same day the new law was implemented. People cannot contain their excitement as they open another chapter of their lives, feeling the real purpose of freedom and liberty. The country of Thailand is known for its tropical climate, its delectable foods, and its vastness of shows varying from main couples—either straight, boys’ love (BL), or girls’ love (GL). “It was physically exhausting. We would rehearse one dance routine over and over again until it was perfect. It would take hours, and there were moments when our bodies just ached from all the training,” recalls Bini Stacey Sevilleja, the main rapper. But beyond the physical impact, the emotional pain weighed heavily on the group as well. There was no assurance that they would make it. The pressure to constantly remediate, blended with the fear of not succeeding, often led to moments of lack of certainty.

Celebrating each other’s birthdays, sharing personal stories, and creating precious memories. These moments of delight strengthen their sisterhood.

2021, Bini officially debuted with their empowering song “Born to Win.” Its release marked Bini’s entry into the competitive P-pop industry— with its infectious beat, high-energy choreography, and meaningful lyrics, the song rapidly gained attraction. The music video garnered millions of views on YouTube, and the girls’ live performances began to generate buzz. Following their debut, Bini continued to evolve musically, releasing hits like “Kapit Lang,” “Pantropiko,” and “Salamin, Salamin. ” Each new track showcased their talents and artistic growth, allowing them to reach a voluminous audience and fans called Blooms. “We’re grateful for everything we’ve achieved so far. With their sights set on the world stage and an enlarging global fanbase, Bini’s journey is far from over.

They’ve only just begun, and their future is as bright as ever. Bini is one of the teams that possesses unwavering determination, teamwork, and resilience. From their challenging trainee days to their rapid ascent as one of the top P-pop groups, they have proven that victory doesn’t come easy, but it is achievable with determination and their strong bond has carried them through.

Across the vast expanse of the Philippines, where plains grow crops and rain often drops, a cultural heritage once sprang, pioneering a threshold of a new chapter—a reservoir of rich and diverse beliefs yet unites into one. There, a province was established, fuming with tender delicacies and food, along with people flashing bright smiles. Once Pampanga was founded, Kapampangans were born.

A province where the air hums with the clinking of ladles and the aroma of sizzling grills—a spot that has quietly indited a culinary masterpiece. It is a place where the ordinary becomes remarkable, where rice is a golden bringhe made by coconut, and where pork on a blistering plate tells an odyssey of resilience and reinvention as sisig.

Paving the way back to December 11, 1571, Spanish colonial rules were implemented across the country. Due to this, it had been one of the greatest contributions of the Spaniards, showcasing social amelioration by establishing Pampanga as one of the earliest to form a province in the Philippines. It was officially declared to be known as the “Culinary Capital of the World" by Senate Bill No. 2797 on December 9, 2024.

To early Filipinos, those days were more than just one mental photograph, but a vivid picture of the province’s historical significance and contributions to their culture and identity. For centuries, its kitchens have attracted many tourists through the weaving of indigenous ingenuity and foreign influences, making dishes that amplify volumes of its people’s pride and creativity.

"What makes Pampanga unique is not only the delicious flavors of its cuisine but also the centuries-old culinary traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation. Kapampangan food reflects the history, creativity, and resilience of its people. Influences from Spanish, Chinese, Malay, and indigenous traditions have melded together, creating a cuisine that is unmistakably Filipino and proudly Kapampangan," Sen. Mark Villar, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism and sponsor of the event, said in his sponsorship speech.

According to the Senator of the Philippines, Pampanga has long been recognized for its exceptional culinary heritage, making it a deserving candidate for the title. Moreover, the province commemorates its culinary feast with numerous food festivals, such as the Giant Lantern Festival and the Sisig Festival. Not only do these celebrations attract tourists, but they also allow for camaraderie, and with Filipino hospitality, the festivals come livelier.

In Pampanga, particularly in the locality of Pandacaqui, Gubat Inasal and Bulaluhan shine the brightest among the vast catalocatalogstaurants in the place. Its eminence and iconic features make it easy for the diner to still be prominent despite its long run of being six years into service already.

The stylistic cuisine of Gubat Inasal and Bulaluhan offers a huge variety of delicacies that are mainly found within the province. The remarkable “Kapampangan Style” showcased by cooks within Pampanga makes it still mouthwatering despite having several competitors across the country.

Thailand’s parliament has submitted the bill to King Vajiralongkorn way back in 2024, wherein it was signed by him the same year. 120 days after the signing of the bill, it was implemented for the public, giving the efforts of two decades of activists inside and outside the government a sigh of relief.

The law has made 68 provisions and amendments mainly focused on changing marriage from “a man and a

“Rainbow colors are everywhere,” Bloomberg has stated, a news reporter, while witnessing the exhilarating scene of couples finally flashing a smile after a long time of pushing these rights over and over again. “Pride flags and other items were handed out to couples and guests, while confetti littered the floor as people celebrated winning marriage equality,” it added.

woman” to “two individuals” and the status of “husband and wife” to “married couple.” These simple changes prove that little shifts of perspective can result in a huge impact affecting both the government and the people.

As Thailand opens another year full of flying colors and relentlessly waving rainbow flags, the world also witnesses how this law improves the status of the country from being full of activists to a nation full of smiles. While 2025 continuously progresses, the societal status of Thailand will also improve following its legalization of the Marriage Equality Bill. While the real definition of freedom is still a puzzle undeciphered until now, for Thailand, its presence is much more obtrusive now than ever.

To call Pampanga the Culinary Capital of the Philippines is both a testimonial and an invitation. It is a recognition of a province whose flavors have defined Filipino cuisine and whose chefs persevere to honor its culinary traditions. But more than that, it is an open door to food lovers from around the world, beckoning them to step into a land where every meal is a masterpiece and every bite carries the warmth of home. Pampanga is not just a destination; it is an ongoing feast, a living testament to the power of food to unite, inspire, and celebrate life in all its delicious forms. As the province importance to the world, it highlights the significance of cultural preservation while fostering community spirit amidst a rapidly changing world. This recognition marks its place as the heartbeat of Filipino cuisine, where every

A Bitter Welcome

Imagine walking in the hallway, hearing teachers silencing their students, seeing athletes dripping with sweat, chit-chatting with comrades, glimpsing at a group of friends throwing paper across the canteen, yet one girl sits alone in the room, anxious and quiet; she is not worried for an upcoming quiz, rather she was perturbed for her future—not only for herself but also for the child she carries.

Among the myriads of challenges adolescents face, teenage pregnancy is one of the most pressing and impactful issues in the society they face.

Approximately 12 million girls aged 15 to 19 give birth each year worldwide. Behind these statistics lies the story of young girls’ dreams, put on hold, altering the course of their lives forever. This issue is not just a personal struggle, but a societal problem.

Teenage pregnancy does not just change the life of the young mother, it also reshapes the course of events for families and society as a whole. For people, becoming a juvenile parent means

cycle of poverty. This also imposes a higher demand for healthcare, education, and social support systems. Schools were tasked to provide ways to catch up with students’ unique needs. Meanwhile, healthcare providers address not only the medical needs of the impregnated but also its mental and emotional pillars.

In certain communities facing economic instability and limited access to healthcare, the challenge of teenage parenthood can exacerbate their existing struggles. As young mothers seek support, they also look for social services that are already extracted from them. To effectively combat teenage pregnancy, a proactive, community-centered approach is necessary. Comprehensive sex education informs teens about reproductive health and contraception while making contraceptives accessible.

Pageants enthusiasts were exhilarated every time a Miss Universe competition airs –especially avid viewers from the Philippines. For every step their representative takes, their shout further intensifies, resonating their unwavering determination to extend their support and let the world hear their plea. Each individual has their own personality when it comes to runways. However, not all women can confidently represent their country on the international stage. With this, a question was left lingering around the corner – “Did the Philippines really lose?”

In the recently held 73rd Miss Universe competition live from the stadium of Mexico, several newly-implemented practices were observed during the entire duration of the tilt. As the arena gets filled with audiences around the world, the whole stage was filled with threads of support connecting each representative through a common goal – to win their country’s next Miss Universe crown.

Following Ms. Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios-Cornejo’s footstep,

Denmark’s representative Victoria Kjaer Theilvig emerged victorious, pioneering the entrance of her country to the international stage, being the first woman to win in a prestigious pageant in their history. However, despite the historical win, what sparked the curiosity of avid enthusiasts is the uncommon selection of continental queens, blooming the issue on why Miss Philippines was chosen as the Miss Universe Asia despite the high placement of Miss Thailand in the competition.

Miss Philippines, Chelsea Manalo, authentically from the province of Bulacan, is considered as a Dark Horse by the country. Her unobtrusive entrance in the pageantry marked an integral point within the competition as she dethrones several renowned names that also participated.

The first emergence of “Continental Queens” was first introduced in the recent 73rd Miss Universe competition. Chelsea Manalo gracefully performed her famous “Tampisaw Walk” on the international stage. Her remarkable ‘Pasarela walk’ embarked a new style of doing the swimsuit round. However, despite her great performance, she did not make it to the top 12.

Her placement did not hinder Bulaceños from extending their support to Chelsea. Despite their high expectations, her compatriots still extended words of comfort that soothed the pain of losing. This simple action gave way for a bud of hope inside Chelsea’s heart to fully bloom, ready to face the challenges of the post-competition.

In addition to the number of kick-ups from the pageant, the tension was fully aroused during the announcement of Miss Asia. Chelsea Manalo, placed in the Top 30, takes home the title despite having Miss Thailand, from the same continent placed as the third-runner up. This unusual move done by the organization slightly degraded the trust of pageant enthusiasts to the genuinity of the Miss Universe results.

Despite the sudden arous al of controversy in the country, the entire nation was ecstatic as they welcomed Chelsea Manalo back.

Bagging the first ever Miss Asia title was enough for Filipinos as a redemption to what the result of the Miss Universe competition has turned out. However, the whole universe is more than happy to welcome Miss Denmark as their newly-entitled Miss Universe winner.

LIn a recent interview, we asked Mrs. Josefina M. Bayani, former Assistant Principal, Doc. Ryan Navarro, incumbent Assistant Principal, and Mr. Garry Dela Cruz, DJGHS’s principal about their opinions on different questions. We gave them an identical question and one specialized question.

“What drives you to lead and inspire, and how do you do it?

“First, of course, my family, my prayers, but first and foremost, my parents. Aside from my family, of course, my friends, [my] colleagues, students, students, co-admin – they are my inspirations. Of course, God who gives me strength,” stated Mrs. Bayani. For her, there are a lot of people to be thankful for that even words cannot even properly describe.

“Well, actually, I was only recommended by my former school head. I just go [by] the way it should be. But when it comes to my inner side, I did not have any choice. I passed the exam, [and] so I need to do the work,” replied Doc. Navarro. For him, working is more of a responsibility. But for a leader with a genuine heart, stepping up is vital.

House of Leaders

egacy is one of the greatest things in the world that will be left among the hearts of people even when the people are not there already. On a recent positional shift in Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS), several changes were enacted in accordance to release of items viable in the selection for the assistant principal. With the recent repositioning, what can be our takeaways from their great leadership?

For Doc. Navarro, we gave a question that fits his personality and position. We asked him “As the new assistant principal, what visions do you intend to make reality for DJGHS?”

“I want the students here to be globally competitive. Upon the acquired competencies based on the prescribed standards of DepEd the students hereby exposed globally. That's why I was impressed when I saw the STEM students proposing their capstone – the robotics – so I see the potential, and top of the potentials may be the better further. Gusto ko makilala kayo internationally. (I want you all to be known internationally),” replied Doc. Navarro.

On the other hand, we asked Mrs. Bayani about what she feels like now that she is going back to her first love. We gave her the question “Now that you have reverted back to your role as Head Teacher, what was your legacy as the OIC Assistant Principal?”

“Actually, I just do my best. As a school administrator, as a school principal, in making sure that students will be able to have an environment which is conducive to learning, and I make sure that teachers do their job by teaching our students,” answered Mr. Dela Cruz. For his genuine heart, keeping a healthy educational environment is the most vital factor in leading. Also, ensuring the camaraderie between stakeholders is also pivotal. There are a lot of factors to consider when we are talking about leading and inspiring. Some people have their own strategies in instilling people with knowledge and wisdom. However, there are leaders who give all of their efforts, not knowing that their efforts really impact many lives positively.

“I just want to correct you. I was given the opportunity to be the OIC here. It was not really my position as the assistant principal. Just like what I have said, it was just a designation. My real position is Head Teacher III (3)of the English department. It is really the position that I have so the three years and three months given to me by the school has given me a huge vacation or responsibility through the help of colleagues and the admin and of course the students,” she replied. As for our principal, we asked him about his opinion about her co-leaders. “As the principal, what would you say to the learners and future leaders?”

“Now, as a school principal, what I can say to our learners today is

for them to study for them to learn more because this learning would eventually be used in their future. Learning life skills, learning information, learning computers, learning mathematics, this would eventually equip a certain person to land a job and become successful. Of course, what we just do here is to provide you with an avenue for learning, but that all depends on the students, to the person if they are going to be successful someday or not. But hopefully, our students will realize the importance of education. You know, that hopefully, we will not be part of the last countries, who are achieving very low in PISA. And hopefully, someday we will be able to improve our education system,” he answered. There are many leaders in this generation that showed up in the industry due to the increasing demand for a genuine service. However, in DJGHS, maintaining an equitable learning environment has been a crucial moment for leaders to seize their positions and help students within their power. For them, helping is leading, and leading is helping. It needs to come hand-inhand.

Carrying Culture in Pockets

alongside its local weave designs –Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has introduced the rest of the polymer series, following the announcement of the 1000-peso bill banknote on April 2022 –featuring 500-, 200-, and 50-peso bills, all distinctly crafted. Paving the way back when these paper bills used to carry faces, are these newly-released designs better than the older versions?

A bold chapter in Philippine history unfolds, highlighting the release of the nation’s new captivating banknotes, a masterpiece of design and revolution. Each bill tells their own stories, lacing the country’s heritage and progress into vibrant colors and striking details. Philippine Peso (Php) is the official currency of the Philippines. These bills have gone to multiple changes in design, pioneering their first release on May 1, 1852, circulated by the first commercial bank of the country, El Banco Español Filipino de Isabel II, featuring 10, 25, 50, and 200 fuertes (strong pesos) used until 1896. They

ERWIN Q. NERI (DJGHS SENIOR BOOK KEEPER)

were then revolutionized by Americans, Japanese, early Filipinos, until finally reaching its appearance we know today.

“The first Philippine polymer banknote series, which includes the 1000-, 500-, 100-, and 50-peso denominations, marks a historic moment for our country,” said President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The polymer series will not involve the Php200 and Php20 value. After the release of the Php20 New Generation Currency (NGC) coin, the old PHP20 New Generation Currency (NGC) banknotes are being abolished.

“The introduction of the first Philippine polymer banknote series reflects the progress we are making as a Bagong Pilipinas—practical, innovative, and deeply meaningful,” he furthered.

“Polymer banknotes are designed to keep up with the demands of everyday life. Unlike paper bills, which wear out after about a year, polymer banknotes can last up to seven and a half years—five times longer.”

Not only do these new banknotes aspire to have more durability, but they also help in sustaining a greener ecosystem. It helps to lessen the need to cut more trees to create paper bills by utilizing the use of synthetic polymer such as biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP), which incorporates many security features not available in paper banknotes, including the use of metameric ink.

According to BSP, its Consumer Expectation Survey in the first quarter of the year found that 61.3% of respondents found it productive and supported the release of the new banknotes. However, there are still some people who express disapproval of changing the prominent faces into photographs of Philippine-native species.

The August Twenty-One Movement (ATOM) expressed its disapproval of the replacement of national heroes in the current

paper bills. Per ATOM, it questions the implications of omitting significant personalities in the history of the banknotes.

Furthermore, Kiko Aquino Dee, grandson of the late Senator Ninoy Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon Aquino also expressed their disappointment over the changes in the banknotes. “They are changing our banknotes — a move initiated by the Duterte administration — so they don’t have to face our heroes while betraying their sacrifices,” he furthered.

Although recent disapprovals have risen following the release of millions of specimens of these polymer series, BSP has noted that newer versions’ banknotes are cleaner, preventing stains from dirt, water, and oil, avoiding the inability to use money due to its stains and unpleasant look. There are several practices mentioned in order to keep its clean appearance. The Department of Health (DOH) also confirmed that the new polymers have a smooth and non-absorptive surface, which is proof against water, oil, and germ is more sanitary. With bills being passed from one hand to another, cleanliness control is likely impossible. BSP also motivates the people to properly care for the banknotes and coins to lengthen their lifespan. Similar to paper banknotes, polymer banknotes must not be ironed or be exposed to extremely high temperatures.

As soon as these series get circulated in 2025, they will be ubiquitous across the country. They can be used to purchase goods, just like older versions, without removing the value of the recent designs initiated by the Duterte administration. These banknotes will look just as good in pockets during Christmas, transferring from envelopes to wallets, giving the same joy and excitement, with a newer look and appearance.

Break a Leg or Break a Neck?

Twilight's Iridescence

What if one day, after devoting my life to my achievements, my neck breaks due to the weight of the medals hanging from it? Did my efforts yield success or burden?

As I watch myself get praised over and over again for the amount of achievements I get from people surrounding me, I can feel my body almost breaking into two from exhaustion. Academic validity… Oh, yeah, that is what I live for. Teaching me pieces of advice for studies? No, thanks, I was already introduced to that –at a very young age, actually. Envisioning myself standing not on the podium. I can instantly hear my thoughts transition from the clanking sound of medals to the snapping sound of a palm, hitting a smooth, delicate, and tender area of my face.

“You don’t have to be on top,” these are words that a lot of students want to hear. But sometimes, hearing these words echo in

my ears just means pressure; it means that they are expecting more. I know that it is not that genuine. Never even once.

Well, having someone to carry agony with is also an integral part of anyone’s academic trajectory. Having friends to go along with… Yeah, that is something. However, I feel guilty whenever I oblige them to carry the pressures with me. Not all of them can support me whenever I struggle with selfdoubt and trauma. No one can even grip onto me whenever I need them. The situation will just exacerbate if I hang up on them. I better not.

Yes, medals are testaments of hard work, and having them hanging on our necks every year is great. However, being used to this weight proves that you are being used to the

pain, the pressure, and the reality of being a student. It is not just learning, it is enjoying your journey, and having fun while discovering new camaraderie and hobbies along the way.

I got called for an honor up on stage, yet I feel resentful; yet a tear fell from my eye. I can’t feel happiness anymore. How am I supposed to enjoy an achievement that feels like an obligation? If it is to happen to you: You get your medal and your parents are celebrating, will you be happy, even if it means sacrificing your childhood?

Invisible Amidst Cacophony

The house was full of sound, but none of it was for me.

Mom’s laugh echoed from the kitchen, bright and quick, aimed at someone on the other end of her phone. Dad’s fingers tapped endlessly at his laptop, a rhythm I couldn’t keep up with. I stood at the edge of it all, a piece of paper clutched tight in my hands. It was my best drawing, a girl with hair like mine, flying beneath the sky I’d made explode with color. I’d even name it. “Joy.”

That’s what it felt like when I made it.

“Mom?” I said softly, taking a small step into the kitchen.

I nodded, even though he wasn’t looking. The words I wanted to say folded up small, like the paper in my hand. I slipped back to my room, the drawing crumpling a little more with each step.

I sat on the bed, smoothed out the wrinkles, and stared at the girl I’d drawn. Her eyes were so bright, but now I wondered if she felt lonely too, floating under that big, colorful sky.

Nature’s Fire-Works: Fiery Catastrophe in Los Angeles

With just one cause, countless lives are at risk—one spark of light, and the whole room erupts into beams of chaos and destruction.

The floor is lava, and so are the trees, eventually. A single spark ignites a fire, cloaking the entire forest in flames. These flames consume infrastructures, destroy lives, and, worst of all, reduce dreams to ashes. Wildfires are a catastrophic force, spreading relentlessly through homes, forests, and anything along their path. Recently, these devastating wildfires have erupted in Los Angeles, leaving destruction and chaos in their wake.

The year 2025 started with a bang, as people started using fireworks, nature showed us its fireworks as well. This early January, multiple wildfires have been marching its way to devour Los Angeles.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) of the United States (US), lightning is the most common factor of wildfires in the US. However, this is not the case in Los Angeles, it was quickly dismissed as a mere factor. With an unclear reason as to why it sparked, the way it was spread was explained. The expanse of fires, along with the Santa Ana winds, made the situation worse with its anemo wisps, helping the flame spread rapidly. Reported by Cal Fire spokesperson Brice Bennett, more than 40,300 acres of land have been set ablaze—resulting in 105 fire cases in the first 11 days of 2025.

This conflagration has not only taken lives, but it also took people’s homes as well. Its aftermath has scorched the hearts of the Los Angeles citizens, with 24 deaths and putting 105,000 residents under evacuation. Collected data has revealed that structures have been burned to ashes by the wildfire.

Tragic experiences brought by disasters are unavoidable and powerful enough to leave a burning scar on individuals’ minds. Despite this, we must help each other bounce back and recover from this massive pyro spread. As we spread awareness about this disaster, like wildfires, let us also lend our hands to order mother

On November 3, 2024, within the sun-scorched deserts of Saudi Arabia, an unforeseen phenomenon unfolded as snow fell along the arid lands of the region, blanketing the vast expanses of golden sands and parched mountains. Leaving citizens and visitors in sparking awe as they witness the first-ever recorded snowfall in Al-Jawf (WIRED, 2024).

The deserts of Al-Jawf, long associated with its scorching heat and arid lands, turn into a breathtaking winter wonderland. Adults and children alike marveled at such a miracle, experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle for those who have only known the heat of the relentless desert sun scorching through the vast expanses of the land.

Uncovering the Veiled Cause Despite being polar opposites, the dry and arid landscape of deserts are, on rare occasions, shrouded by clouds that bring freezing temperatures, creating an

awe-inspiring scenery within barren terrains. These stark changes frequently occur at higher altitudes, as the presence of lower temperatures and moisture is prominent, sparking the creation of the improbable phenomena across the barren wasteland.

A Recurring Phenomenon Though the chances are extremely slim, winter snowfall within deserts has occurred occasionally within recent years, even within the Atacama Desert— the driest place on earth (Indiatimes, 2021). Deserts such as the Sahara Desert and the Sonoran Desert have also experienced being transformed into winter wonderlands 10-12 times and 4-5 times, respectively.

North America’s Desert Turns White On March 2, 2023, the Sonoran Desert, North America’s hottest desert, was captured to experience snowfall—approximately a

year and a half before Al-Jawf’s first recorded snow. During that time, two to four inches of snow were measured in a span of four hours.

According to the Cooper Center, it is a rare weather phenomenon that happens under specific atmospheric conditions, typically during winter when cold air masses interact with moisture-filled clouds.

These once-in-a-lifetime phenomena create breathtaking and awe-sparking scenery. At the same time, they serve as a highlight on how unpredictable and resilient nature is, showing us how change can happen even in the most unexpected situations and the most improbable scenarios, how beautiful yet cruel nature is.

rom a startling revelation, diseases that were once considered indicators of aging—such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes—are now appearing in younger generations. This phenomenon reflects how habits and lifestyles interplay with changes and environmental factors in painting the current picture of generational health.

Have you ever wondered how influences play a pivotal role in our lives? Let us dig deeper into how this occurrence can serve as a wake-up call to rethink life choices for a healthier future for incoming generations.

The Lifestyle Dilemma

According to the Mayo Clinic (2023), type 2 diabetes occurs commonly in adults. However, with the rise of obesity cases among the younger generation, type 2 diabetes is now making its appearance among teenagers and young children. The foundation may be due to their eating habits and decreased physical activity. Furthermore, not only caused

by their sedentary lifestyle, genetics and family history could also be an important factor in this condition.

Silent Killer

Increased stress, particularly from academic pressure and social media, does as much damage as poor nutrition. Societal expectations can lead to severe hypertension related to high blood pressure, which is mostly seen in older adults. The younger generation nowadays is experiencing anxiety, triggering mental health disorders that could later on be linked to physical conditions like heart disease.

Role of Environmental Factors

Certain environmental issues could also affect and introduce the younger generation to a variety of respiratory diseases and cancers. Cigarette smoking, tobacco use, and vaping all contribute to air pollution, which can intensify conditions such as asthma and pulmonary diseases. Additionally, skin cancers from harmful chemicals in the environment are now being seen more in younger individuals.

As the younger generation faces health challenges early in their lives, it is clear that immediate action is needed to alleviate these issues. As science continues to evolve,

Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS) has once again showcased its commitment to fostering science and innovation. At the recently concluded Cluster 1 Science and Technology Fair 2024, DJGHS’s remarkable STEM students demonstrated their abilities to represent their institution. This further highlighted their hard work and dedication in emphasizing the importance of research in shaping the future of science and technology. In recent times, essential awareness around the environment maximizes the ability to create a solution regarding environmental challenges. To fight this phenomenon, students are encouraged to use their voices in sharing possible responses against circumstances.

there is hope that we can reverse this troubling trend by taking extra precautions for our health. The rise of the disease among generations may be a challenge, but an early call to action can combat this phenomenon.

notable achievement occurred on Novem ber 14, when Mr. Raven S. Maraguinot, a STEM student from 12-Bohr, secured 1st place in the Cluster 1 Tuklas Research—Phys ical Science Individual Category. Fol lowing this success, on November 20, Maraguinot and his research adviser, Ms. Trisha Mae D. Chu, successfully present ed their research at the Division Science and Technology Fair 2024 and acquired 3rd place. His research project, titled “Exploring the Po tential of Rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) Peels as Substrate in Single-Chamber Microbial Fuel Cell,” highlights innovative approaches to addressing environmental problems.

The Unseen Shift: The Spread of Vegetation in Antartica

The boat is sinking, so are the icebergs.

In the cold expanse, where life seemed uncertain and frozen in time, a strange phenomenon unfolds— staining the immense icy whiteness with green burgeons. The white continent, commonly known as Antarctica, is a home for various species of animals, and approximately 350 types of plants could withstand the extremely harsh temperature. However, as the warmth rises, more and more unexpected plants start to bloom.

The Green Invasion As the global climate drastically declines, the presence of several greeneries begins to appear. Therefore, slowly

covering the vast snowy fields of whites with plots of greens. Resulting in distortion to its diversity.

An Unexpected Growth Vegetation in Antarctica is unusual; despite this, plants like mosses, lichens, algae, and a variety of flowers grow in the ice-free areas using minimal nutrients to sustain themselves. With climate change causing bodies of ice to melt, this results in more locations for overgrowth of greenery.

An Arising Crisis According to a journal, Nature Geoscience, the accumulation of plants accelerated by more than 30% between 2016 and 2021 alone, with 400,000 square meters of vegetation added. Additionally, a recent study showed that the plant cover on the Antarctic Peninsula has grown ten times larger than it has over the past 40 years.

Disastrous Outcome The silent spread of plants across Antarctica is altering its fragile, untouched

Promoting Awareness: Battle Against HIV

Silence of a sniper, deadly as a bullet. An enemy you'll never know once you spot it. Massacre of thousands of people just because of an unseen foe.

In the blink of an eye, lives can be turned upside down. An inescapable path that will lead you to uncertainty. The disastrous effect of a disease: HIV.

Formation of a Deadly Enemy

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a deadly infection that strikes the immune system. It is acquired from intercourse, contact with infected blood, such as when people share needles or syringes, and through various bodily fluids. This disease makes it easy for illnesses like tuberculosis, infections, and some cancers to develop in a person's body. Hence, it damages our immune system, which causes further complications.

Detected, What to Feel?

For instance, its symptoms are disguised as common sicknesses. According

to the World Health Organization (WHO), the signs are fever and headache, sometimes accompanied with rashes and sore throat, and also may experience flu-like symptoms. An infected person can be seen with these symptoms within a period of one to eight weeks; this phase is referred to as acute HIV infection.

Disastrous Impacts

Based on the statistics of WHO, the number of people with the case of HIV reported in 2023 was 39.9 million. It was the reason behind the death of 630,000 individuals. HIV weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight off infections. However, acquiring HIV does not mean a person will die, but neurological effects, respiratory problems, and circulatory complications will be observed in an

Unlocking the Potential of Rambutan Peels

araguinot’s research delves into microbial fuel cells (MFCs), an eco-friendly technology that can convert food waste into bioelectricity (Zafar et al., 2023).

The study specifically explored the potential of rambutan peels as a renewable energy source. After conducting the procedure and analyzing the data, the experiment concluded that rambutan peels have potential as a substrate for renewable energy. However, further enhancement to the substrate, such as incorporating soil, zinc, and carbon, is essential in enhancing the efficiency of rambutan peel-based MFCs.

ecosystem. Mosses and algae, thriving in areas where the ice is receding, are changing the dynamics of life in this harsh environment. These plants, which seem innocent at first glance, are quietly reshaping the soil's composition, disrupting the delicate balance of ecosystems in the Antarctic region. Furthermore, causing competition of native species, introduction of non-native species, and ecological shift.

The emergence of greenery in Antarctica is a sheer reminder of the changes occurring across the globe. What was once an untouched, chill wilderness is now marked with spreading vegetation. This shift emphasizes the urgency of addressing global challenges. These green stains symbolize an altered diversity, leading to potentially irreversible impacts on the Antarctic ecosystem.

The world of technology has been an influential development to humanity. In recent times, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic, mobile applications have been an integral part in making easier transactions, whether it is in the form of paying bills or shopping online (Li et al., 2020). Modes of payment have advanced to cashless transactions, transforming consumers’ habits along with their spending patterns.

With the innovation of cashless transactions—transfer of money without the physical form of banknotes—there has been a shift in perspective towards physical payment. The availability of credit cards and debit cards, e-wallets, online banking, and quick-response (QR) code payments are some of the options that may align with the consumer’s preference. Through the vast choices of cashless payment methods, there is no doubt that consumers are bound to go cashless, maximizing the benefit that the technology offers. The use of cashless transactions minimizes time consumption while providing a secured and seamless transit of payment. Establishments have been very open to accepting cashless payment, which is why a lot of people are walking around with just their phones and cards, the presence of physical money gone (Alano et al., 2024). This is also convenient to our economy as it reduces the need to print out physical banknotes, generating less carbon emissions. Gcash, the go-to e-wallet application in the Philippines, plays a vital role in connecting consumers to cashless payments. Since the application is accessible to the public, almost all of the Filipinos are registered users of Gcash. It is an ever-evolving digital application that has become a part of consumers' day-to-day lives. Gcash is loaded with tons of features, allowing users to send and receive money, pay bills, buy loads, and more.

individual’s body. Precautions and Preventions HIV prevention is practiced all around the world. To achieve fewer cases, several precautions need to be taken into consideration. Practicing safe intercourse and, by various methods, getting tested for HIV. Using safe and proper equipment before coitus is highly advised as well. Society should also be aware of misconceptions that may lead to unwanted situations. That is why, on the 1st day of December, each year, HIV awareness is being celebrated worldwide—to combat stigmas and spread awareness to the public. HIV is a threat to anyone who is infected. Destruction of a person's life can

occur when they are not knowledgeable about what to do. Encouraging to be educated practices is one a brighter future. humanity must by step and hand fight against HIV.

Turning Point for DJGHS

TThe year 2024 marks DJGHS’s first participation at the division level of a research competition. Over the last academic year, DJGHS has developed over 40 projects across various fields, including biology, physical science, robotics, and IT. The school is committed to continuously improving its STEM environment, aiming to nurture future projects and individuals that will both benefit the institution and its students. Science and technology are truly an invocation for flourishing a future where innovation resides. Having the necessary foundation for support to nourish this success is something that DJGHS can do. Further encouragement to the individuals who take an interest in this field will be the key to unlocking inevitable success.

While cashless transactions have its advantages, it poses risks of fraud and hacking. Although there are two authentication factors, passwords and biometrics, hackers will still find their way to corrupt the data and applications. Furthermore, with the frequent use of online payment methods, users are becoming dependent on technology. Certain applications also have the tendency to malfunction and the servers to be down, causing distress to bubble up inside the users’ minds. It is important to take into account that not every transaction can be as smooth as butter. Even though cassless payment is deemed to be ideal, which in some ways it is, not every store accepts online transactions. Remember, having access to both physical and online payment is a game-changer, keeping backup cash could also be a lifesaver.

Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited, whereas imagination embraces the entire world.

DJGHS triumphs esports tilt

Dominating the competition, Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS) clinches the championship as they swept the floor with an astonishing arena performance in the Mobile Legends ESports Cluster Meet, on November 19-20, 2024, at Tinajero High School. The players roster featured “fkad,” played by Amiel Zion Paras, as the Jungler; “Precipice,” ruled by Jhorem Adolf Palma, as the Gold Laner; “EYYABLE,” mastered by Carlo Dagdag, as the EXP Laner; “SG Quantum,” utilized by Ralph Daniel

IUrquiola, as the Mid Laner; “Reticence,” adapted by Kalistan Jimenez, as the Roamer; and “warriorglory,” exhibited by Karl Kirby Pineda, as the 6th man – the same team who won the intramurals for Mobile Legends ESports last October. Placed at Group A, DJGHS faced a rocky start. Suffering back-toback defeats in their first two games. Falling against Arayat National High School in Game 1 and Camba High School in Game 2, making the road to championship harder. However, DJGHS swung a haymaker, winning their last three games before

advancing to Round 2. They triumphed in Game 3 against homecourt favorite Tinajero Main, followed by a solid victory over Gatiawin High School in Game 4. The streak continued with a win against Andres High School in Game 5. In round two, DJGHS dominated both games against Gatiawin High School in game one ending the game in 12 minutes and 39 seconds. Camba High School in game two ending it in 10 minutes and seven seconds. In the semi-finals, Tinajero Annex lost to Arayat

DJGHS’ Basketball Young Lioness

n the bustling streets of Sapang Maisac, a basketball star is quietly emerging. At the early age of just 13 years old, Francheska Kylie L. Dizon has become a household name in her community. Her rise is driven by a relentless love for the ball game with a heart of a thousand.

Born on February 20, 2011, in Cutud, Dizon stands at 4'11"—a small frame for a player who dreams big. But what she lacks in height, she makes up for with spirit.

The Grade 7 student from her section, Samuel, stole the spotlight from older students after dominating the intramurals with no losses en route to the championship, which she won.

Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS) conducted an exhibition game in which the best players were selected to play for the varsity team. The girls' 5x5 exhibition match was not a regular match; it featured. "All-Rounder" Angel R. Villanueva, "Hardwood Bull" Paula Andrea S. Cayanan, and the "Hustler" Kisha Mae G. Cuyugan. However, Dizon steamrolled everyone with offensive prowess and tight-knit defense. Winning the game, 22-12. Crowned Intramurals girl's basketball MVP—the youngest player ever to earn the title. Dizon’s journey to

the court wasn’t exactly conventional. Before basketball, she ran track and field, excelling in speed and endurance. One day in Grade 3, she picked up a basketball out of curiosity. She dribbled, shot, and fell in love. From that moment on, basketball became her passion.

“I started playing on my own,” she recalls. “It just felt right.”

Her playing style is unique. Dizon described herself as "positionless," which means she can play from point guard to center.

"Defense is my greatest strength," she said.

Dizon idolizes NBA superstar Ja Morant, who shares the same traits with her—tenacity and grit. Sharing the same explosiveness on the court. A dream one-on-one match with NBA legend Stephen Curry is what she looks forward to.

But even rising stars have growing pains. Her teammates admire her offensive game and acknowledge her knack for playmaking, but they also call her a bit of a ball hog. Her coaches, on the other hand, see something extraordinary.

“She reminds me of a young Allen Iverson,” says Sir Hernandez, one of Girl's basketball coaches.

“Her speed and dribbling are unmatched on the team. She does overdo it sometimes, but with a few

years of maturity, she’ll be unstoppable.”

Coach Waje compares her to Kyrie Irving, emphasizing her hard work and commitment, while coach Yusi sees her as Johnny Abarrientos's shadow, praising her ballhandling and offensive skills.

Off the court, despite playing a sport known for boys. Dizon’s parents saw something different; they gave support to her passion. The community respected the lioness' skill and heart, often playing basketball with boys.

Dizon continues her journey, representing Don Jesus Gonzales High School in the upcoming Pampanga Schools Athletic Association Meet (PASDAAM). The young Lioness will only grow stronger—who said basketball is only for boys?

National High School, Don Jesus won their match against Balitucan National High School. Don Jesus had the chance for a revenge in the Group A lost against Arayat. In the finals round, DJGHS redressed as they beat Arayat NHS, with a snowball win 19-9, ending the game in just 10 minutes and 17 seconds, claiming the title of Mobile Legends Esports Cluster Meet champions.

Within the continuous progress of several sports programs in the Philippines, there are still some classifications that were left unhindered by the constantly evolving popularity of these physical activities. Pickleball, a sport that combines the best of tennis, badminton, and table tennis, has quietly gained traction across the Philippines, but it is time for this dynamic game to take center stage in the country’s ever-expanding sports culture.

Since its first introduction in 2016, pickleball has grown significantly, with 123 clubs now operating nationwide. Yet, despite its growing popularity, the sport has remained largely under the radar despite its potential to appeal to both recreational players and competitive athletes. The simplicity of pickleball makes it an ideal sport for Filipinos of all ages, as its short learning curve allows beginners to pick it up quickly, while its fast-paced rallies and strategic gameplay keep experienced players engaged. In a recent study conducted by the National Library for Medicine, 75% of Filipinos are mostly capable of performing well in sports.

However, despite this large percentage, not all sports have been a priority for the country. While basketball dominates public courts and badminton thrives in private gyms, pickleball occupies a unique space in Philippine sports, as it can be played with minimal equipment and offers a community-centered atmosphere that fosters camaraderie and inclusion.

Despite this fact, the sport’s future depends on the support it receives from local governments, schools, and national sports associations, which could play a crucial role in providing proper facilities, organizing tournaments, and introducing pickleball to younger generations.

If the Philippines fully embraces pickleball, it could become a leader in Southeast Asia for this sport, giving rise to opportunities for international competitions and elevating the country’s profile on the global stage. The time has come to recognize pickleball not just as a pastime but as a sport that has the potential to unite communities, promote health and fitness, and provide a new platform for Filipino athletes to shine.

flawlessly, acquiring 6.0 difficulty level, achieving a total average score of 15.433. His left made a spectacular impression on his opponents, marking his grand entrance to the tilt once again.

Competitiveness seemed to have crept into Yulo's system as he performed his second vault; he made sure to not be complacent. He tried elevating the level of difficulty of his performance, but he failed. However, he managed to achieve a nail-biting 5.6 difficulty level, being 0.4 short, falling behind his first attempt. 14.800 was his second average score. The tallying of the final scores became the

most nerve-wracking part of the competition. Yulo, together with his coach and confidants, prayed hard in hopes to bring home the bacon. Fortunately for him, his final score yielded 15.116, topping all of his opponents, bagging the second gold for his country, the Philippines.

“I am glad and very happy that my dreams finally came true. I also feel proud, knowing that I made an impact on Filipinos and I’ve inspired my fellow athletes,” Yulo stated in an interview. Spain, Israel, China, Kazakhstan, Great Britain, Ukraine, and Japan’s representatives all fought for the pride of their countries. Unfortunately, they fell a little

behind Yulo. Caloy’s scores were higher than the first three gymnasts, and due to pressure, the next four individuals who followed him tried to surpass his average scores, but did not succeed.

“That experience was very overwhelming. I’m super thankful that I didn’t stop pursuing my dreams, and of course, thankful and grateful to the Lord that he gave me courage.”

he proudly furthered. Yulo is utmost aware of the impact that the Filipino

citizens have caused due to their overwhelming support and unwavering comfort. The Philippines, which Caloy represented, celebrated with him during his historical win.

Dribbling Toward Victory

Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS) set the court ablaze as its basketball girls incarcerate their opponents in a nail-biting scenario during the cluster meet. However, with the recently held tune-up game against San Juan High School (SJHS), team coordination became a major setback to the team’s journey, setting them a dismal 21-9 score.

Despite their struggle in the tune-up game, the team composition of DJGHS Basketball Girls is full house. Their diverse set of skills and abilities makes it difficult for many players to cope with them, handing their opponents a sufferable moment of brawling against them; they receive an immense edge against their enemies in exchange.

Angela R. Villanueva, known as "Gel" or "Gela," is the team’s most experienced and versatile player. Her ability to score from the paint to beyond the arc, hustle for rebounds, and create plays makes her a well-rounded athlete. Villanueva’s offensive awareness and playmaking ability allow her to exploit opponents’ weaknesses. She's also the team captain, often guiding Dizon.

Francheska Kylie Dizon, at just 4 feet 11 inches (4’11”) and being the youngest on the team, Kylie is already being hailed as a prodigy. Nicknamed "Lioness" for her relentless aggression on both ends of the court, she excels in snatching the ball from opponents and rebounding despite her height disadvantage. Her eight steals in the exhibition game show her defensive prowess.

Paula "Pau" S. Cayanan is

the team's most physical player and an excellent rebounder. Her ability to hustle opponents in the paint and her instinct for anticipating opponents for a block. Her post moves make quick work of any defender under the basket. Cayanan's excellent inside presence and defense are vital for a 3x3 game.

Kisha Mae G. Cuyugan, known for her energetic play style, is the team’s hustler and a reliable bench player. Her persistence in chasing loose balls and denying opponents possession is her weapon. Though she plays a reserved role, her effort and dedication have earned her the respect of her teammates and coaches alike.

Despite the team’s talents, Coach Albert Hernandez acknowledges that their chemistry and coordination need improvement. “We have the skills, but we need to work better as a team,” Coach

Hernandez said, pointing out the importance of teamwork as they head into PASDAAM.

With the Pampanga Schools Athletic Association Meet just around the corner, January 28th. The DJGHS Basketball Girls are at their 100%, training to avoid mistakes and building chemistry between them. With their experienced captain, a young prodigy, and a great coach. DJGHS' Basketball Girls team is a force to be reckoned with.

After dominating the cluster meeting, the Don Jesus Gonzales High School (DJGHS) basketball girls are on their way to the Pampanga Schools Athletic Association Meet (PASDAAM), ready to present newly acquired skills and abilities. With the vigorous training they have undergone, their team vows to make an impactful comeback on the bigger bracket.
