the red carpet starts here Bridal beauty, but make it Cannes: Styled Shoot by Audrey McCarthy There is something unmistakable about red carpet beauty. It’s not about wearing more makeup, creating a bigger hairstyle or following the latest trend. The best red carpet looks are considered from every angle, beautiful in person, polished in photographs and designed to hold their own through bright lights, cameras and a very long day. And when you think about it, your wedding day isn't so different. For one day, the cameras really are on you. For this month's main editorial, Audrey McCarthy brought the worlds of bridal and red carpet beauty together in a shoot she created shortly before heading to Cannes.

And while the setting may be Scotland rather than the French Riviera, the inspiration is unmistakably red carpet. Audrey's career spans bridal, editorial, fashion and celebrity work, with experience at the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals, the BAFTAs and international Fashion Weeks. Her approach to red carpet beauty centres around refined, luminous skin and carefully considered definition, makeup that needs to look just as beautiful to the person standing beside you as it does through a camera lens. It is also exactly why red carpet glamour and bridal beauty belong together far more naturally than we sometimes think.

Audrey organised the editorial to showcase the style of artistry she takes between those two worlds, working alongside her sister, Shannon McCarthy to create the hair and makeup on the three models. 6

BRIDAL DOESN'T HAVE TO LOOK BRIDAL There isn't one correct way for a bride to look. For some, it’s barely there, fresh and natural. For others, it is glossy skin, sculpted features, statement eyes, immaculate hair and the sort of finish you'd expect to see stepping out of a car at a film premiere. Both are bridal. The important thing is that your wedding beauty feels like you, only more enhanced. Red carpet artistry is particularly relevant to weddings because it has to balance impact with longevity. Skin still needs to look like skin. Makeup has to work in different lighting. Hair has to retain its shape. Everything needs to photograph beautifully without looking heavy when you're standing face-to-face with someone. Audrey describes her own signature bridal style as “Red Carpet Glamour”, centred around flawless, radiant skin that works both on camera and in person. And that's the inspiration behind this editorial. Not becoming somebody else for your wedding day.

the wedding morning Hair and makeup may be at the heart of this editorial, but creating a beautiful image is never about one element alone. While Audrey and Shannon were creating the hair and makeup, everything else was coming together around them, similar to a real wedding morning. While all things are go in the bridal suite with hair and makeup, behind the scenes, it’s all happening. You’ve spent months, sometimes years, planning your dress, flowers, jewellery, cake, beauty team and all those little details in between. For this shoot, each element was brought together to create a world that feels polished, glamorous and unmistakably editorial. Just as with a wedding, it’s not one detail that creates the finished picture. It’s seeing everything finally come together. A LITTLE PLANNING BEHIND THE GLAMOUR A relaxed wedding morning might look effortless, but behind the scenes your hair and makeup team will be working to a carefully planned schedule.

Depending on the size of your bridal party, that can mean an early start, with everyone allocated a time for hair and makeup. We always allow appropriate time for each service and build in some breathing room, but it’s important that everyone is ready when it’s their turn in the chair. Even a small delay can have a knock on effect later in the morning, and the last person we ever want to rush is the bride. Good natural light and enough space for your artists to set up and work are important too. The bridal suite can become a busy place very quickly, particularly as flowers, photographers and suppliers start to arrive. The Wedding Beauty Guide Scotland Have you wondered, Who should go first? THE BRIDAL MASCARA GUIDE TUBING, REGULAR OR WATERPROOF And then there’s the first look. Whether it’s Dad seeing his daughter in her dress, the bridesmaids seeing her finished look for the first time, or that first moment with the partner, tears are a very normal part of a wedding day. Wedding mornings just have an emotion and anticipation about them that you don’t get on a regular day, and as makeup artists, we know that.

THE BRIDAL MASCARA GUIDE: What ones Best? After working on countless wedding mornings, there’s one thing I can tell you: weddings are emotional. Even the brides who are absolutely certain they won’t cry can suddenly find themselves welling up when the flowers arrive, when Mum walks into the room, or when they see themselves fully ready for the first time.

So when we choose a mascara for bridal makeup, we’re not only thinking about how beautiful it makes the lashes look. We’re thinking about what those lashes might have to contend with over the next 12+ hours. Tears. Watery eyes. Heat. Natural oils. Hugs. Dancing. And possibly a bit of unpredictable Scottish weather (i.e rain). But does that mean every bride needs waterproof mascara? Not necessarily.

There are three main types worth understanding: regular, waterproof and tubing mascara, and they don’t all work in the same way. REGULAR MASCARA Traditional mascara coats the lashes with a combination of pigments, waxes and other ingredients to create length, volume and definition. There are some fantastic regular formulas available. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High is a great example and has become incredibly popular for the length and separation it can give the lashes.

WATERPROOF MASCARA This is probably what most brides immediately associate with wedding makeup, and for obvious reasons. Waterproof mascaras are specifically formulated to resist water and moisture, making them a natural choice when we know happy tears may be on the agenda. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof is the waterproof counterpart to the popular original Sky High. Lancôme Lash Idôle Waterproof is another option for lifted, defined lashes, while Dior Diorshow Waterproof gives a fuller, more dramatic effect.

For everyday makeup, a regular mascara may be all you need. But a wedding day isn’t an average makeup day. Your makeup will be applied early in the morning and still be expected to look beautiful well after midnight.

One I personally used to use in my professional kit was Eyeko Beach Waterproof Mascara. It’s designed as a genuinely waterproof formula for the sort of conditions you'd encounter swimming, on holiday or around heat and humidity.

Add an emotional ceremony, a warm room or watery eyes into the equation and a standard mascara may have more to deal with than usual.

Those are exactly the qualities that can also make a waterproof mascara useful on a wedding day. There is a trade off with waterproof formulas. Some can feel a little drier than their regular counterparts and they can be more stubborn to remove at the end of the night, so a suitable eyemakeup remover and a gentle hand are important.

That doesn’t mean I’d automatically rule it out. It simply means the mascara needs to be chosen for the person wearing it and the day ahead.

And there's something else I always think brides should know: WATERPROOF DOESN'T MEAN INDESTRUCTIBLE. There isn't a mascara I would promise is absolutely guaranteed not to move.

TUBING MASCARA This can be a brilliant option for the right person. Tubing mascara works differently from traditional mascara. Rather than simply coating the lashes in the usual way, film-forming polymers create tiny flexible tubes around individual lashes. Once those tubes have formed, they can be particularly resistant to the smudging and transferring that some people experience underneath their eyes. If you're someone who applies mascara in the morning only to discover it has somehow migrated underneath your eyes by lunchtime, tubing mascara is definitely worth knowing about. Removal is different too.

A formula may be excellent at resisting water, but water isn't the only thing it encounters. Natural oils around the eye, richer skincare products, concealer, heat and, probably the biggest culprit rubbing or wiping your eyes can all affect how your mascara and the rest of your eye makeup wear. So even when you're wearing waterproof mascara, how you deal with those inevitable tears still matters.

Many tubing formulas are designed to release when they're thoroughly soaked with warm water and gently eased away from the lashes. Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky Tubes is a current example of tubing technology. Maybelline describes it as cold-waterproof and sweat-proof, while the tubes are designed to release with warm water (although I did find this did transfer under my eyes so definitely test them out). 51

TUBING AND WATERPROOF AREN'T THE SAME THING The terms are sometimes used as though they're interchangeable, but they actually describe different things. Tubing describes how the mascara forms around the lashes. Waterproof describes its resistance to water. And a mascara can potentially have characteristics of both. Maybelline Sky Tubes, for example, is a tubing mascara that is also described by the brand as coldwaterproof. Warm water, however, is what helps release those tubes at the end of the day. So I wouldn't tell a bride that tubing automatically means waterproof, or that every waterproof mascara is going to behave like a tubing formula. They're different technologies and, importantly, individual formulas perform differently. SO, WHICH MASCARA WOULD I CHOOSE FOR A BRIDE? It depends entirely on the bride. That's really the point. When I'm looking at someone's eyes on a wedding morning, I'm not just thinking about whether I want their lashes to look longer or fuller.

I'm also thinking: Do your eyes water easily? Is the skin around your eyes particularly oily? Does mascara normally transfer underneath your eyes? Do your lashes struggle to hold a curl? Are your eyes sensitive? Are you a crier? Two brides could wear exactly the same mascara and have completely different experiences with it. That's one of the benefits of having your makeup professionally done. A makeup artist isn't simply creating a pretty eye look. We're choosing products and techniques according to the person who's actually going to be wearing them. When you feel those tears coming, my advice is simple: DON'T RUB. Take a clean tissue and gently catch or blot the tears, particularly at the inner and outer corners of your eyes. Look up, I don’t know the science behind this but it works. Try not to repeatedly wipe underneath the lashes. You've also got concealer, foundation, eyeshadow and possibly eyeliner and lashes around the eye area. Even the best waterproof mascara can't protect the makeup surrounding it if we're rubbing everything with a tissue. 53

HATED YOUR HAIR & MAKEUP TRIAL? HERES WHAT TO DO NEXT BY SARA BONNER O HARA So, you turned up for your hair and makeup trial and it didn't quite go to plan. First of all: take a deep breath. I know it’s frustrating, but your trial is definitely not the be-all and end-all— it’s literally designed to be a practice run to catch these exact things! Before you go venting about your bad experience on social media, let me walk you through what your next steps should actually be. 1. Talk to your artist straight away The very first thing you need to do is just drop your artist a message. Be totally honest and tell them what you weren't feeling—whether the foundation felt too heavy, the eyes weren't bright enough, or the hair felt a bit flat. Don't sit there worrying about hurting our feelings! We honestly prefer 100% brutal honesty over you staying silent and feeling miserable on your big day. 2. Remember it’s just makeup At the end of the day, it’s only makeup and hair. It isn't permanent. It can be wiped off, tweaked, brushed out, and completely changed until we get it right. That's the whole point of doing a trial in the first place—to figure out what doesn't work so we can nail what does. 3. Keep calm and tweak it Don't panic or start scrambling to find a brandnew artist just yet. Send over a few photos of what you loved versus what felt off, or gather a couple of fresh reference pics. Good artists are problem solvers, and we want you to walk away feeling like the absolute best version of yourself. Give them the chance to make it right for you—you’ll be amazed at how easily a quick, honest conversation can turn things around! 54

YOUR HAIR & MAKEUP TRIAL ISN'T REALLY ABOUT TRIALLING YOUR ARTIST What your wedding hair and makeup trial is actually for, and what you need to know beforehand. Wedding hair and makeup trials are something we recommend to brides, but here's something that might surprise you: Your trial isn't really the time to decide whether your artist is good enough to do your wedding hair or makeup. You should already feel confident about that before you even book them. As artists, we sometimes see brides approaching a trial almost like an audition. Can this person create the look I want? Are they good at what they do? Do I like their style? But those are questions I'd encourage you to answer before you book your wedding artist, not at your trial.

Choose the artist before you choose the appointment Before you book anyone, spend some time looking properly at their work. And I don't mean finding one photograph on Instagram that you love. 55

Look through their portfolio. Scroll through their social media. Visit their website. Look at different brides, different faces, different hair types and different finished looks. You want to find yourself thinking: "I'd wear that." And then thinking it again. And again. There should be lots of examples of their work that you would genuinely be happy to wear on your own wedding day. Because every hair and makeup artist has their own style, strengths and approach. If full glam wedding makeup is your thing, don't choose an artist whose work is predominantly barely there, natural makeup and then arrive at the trial hoping they'll create something completely different. Equally, if you never normally wear much makeup and want to look incredibly natural, an artist known predominantly for highglam looks may not be the natural fit for you. Neither artist is better than the other. They're simply different artists for different brides.

Your trial is for the LOOK Once you've found the right professional, that's when the trial becomes really valuable. You're not starting from: "Can this artist do my makeup?" You're starting from: “I love your work. Now let's find MY version of it." That's a completely different experience. Your trial gives you and your artist the opportunity to explore the details of your wedding look. Perhaps you've saved three hairstyles and love different elements from each. Maybe you know you want glowing skin but aren't sure how much coverage you'll feel comfortable wearing. You might think you want a particular lip colour and discover something slightly different works beautifully with the rest of the look. Hair can behave differently from the hair in your inspiration photograph. Makeup colours can look different against different skin tones. Your dress, accessories, veil, hair length, texture, skin and personal style all come into the conversation. That's what you're trialling. The look, not the talent of the person creating it. 56

And don't forget the person behind the portfolio Technical ability is obviously incredibly important. But there's another part of choosing your wedding hair and makeup artist that I don't think brides always consider enough: Do you actually want this person with you on your wedding morning?

Your artist will likely be one of the first suppliers to arrive. They often spend several hours with you while you're in your dressing gown, surrounded by your closest friends and family, feeling excited, emotional and perhaps a little nervous. You want to feel comfortable around them. You want someone whose energy works with yours. And these days, it's often easier to get a sense of that before you've even met. Many hair and makeup artists share much more behind-thescenes content now. You'll see them talking to camera, working on real wedding mornings, interacting with brides and showing snippets of their personality and how they work. Pay attention to that as well as the beautiful finished photographs. Do you like their approach? Do you feel you'd be comfortable around them? Does the way they communicate align with what you're looking for? Obviously, social media can never tell you everything and remember a lot of Artists are too busy to do lots of Social Media so don’t assume if they arent active that they aren't busy, it’s usually the opposite, this is just another place to look. 58

So, do you actually need a trial? A hair or makeup trial isn't compulsory, but it's something we generally recommend. Not because your artist needs to prove that they can do their job. It's because seeing an inspiration photograph and actually wearing a look are two very different things. Your trial gives you the opportunity to see how your ideas translate onto you, make adjustments and work collaboratively with your artist before the wedding day. And that means when the wedding morning finally arrives, you're not wondering what your hair or makeup is going to look like. You've already made those decisions together. You can sit down, enjoy the experience and let the professional you've chosen do what you already knew they could do. THE TAKEAWAY Choose your artist first. Trial your look second. Before booking, ask yourself: Do I love their work? Not one photograph, lots of it. Does their signature style align with how I want to look? Do I feel confident they can create the type of hair or makeup I want? Do I like their approach and the way they communicate? Can I imagine having them with me on my wedding morning? If the answer is yes, then your trial can do what it's actually there to do: help you find your wedding day look.

Editor's Note I love seeing what's happening in beauty, and you'll always find trends and new ideas everywhere. But your wedding isn't a trend. The most important question isn't "What's fashionable?" It's "Does this feel like me?" That's where choosing the right hair and makeup professional becomes so important. A great artist can take the elements you're drawn to and interpret them in a way that works for your features, your personal style, your dress and the overall feel of your wedding. It's there to inspire you, to take ideas from, save details you love and perhaps consider something you hadn't thought about before. There isn't a rulebook for how a bride should look.
