The masterclass centred around the new Lumière Capturée collection, introducing Hildun's new Peptide Pearl Balms Although they leave a beautifully glossy finish, they're much more than a traditional lip gloss.

Founder Suzi Griffin Dunne shared that she wasn't completely happy with the original formula during development, feeling it was too sticky.

Rather than compromise, production was moved to Italy so the formula could be completely reformulated before launch, a decision that perfectly reflects the brand's attention to quality.

Every guest received an incredibly generous goodie bag, including one surprise that hadn't yet been released: the Soft Focus Luxe Eyeshadow Quad. As someone who works in bridal beauty, this immediately caught my attention.

So, we asked our members, some of Scotland's most experienced bridal hair and makeup artists, one simple question:

"In your experience, what's the biggest mistake brides make when it comes to their hair and makeup?"

Their answers are honest, practical and based on years of working with real brides

Whether you're newly engaged or counting down the weeks until your wedding day, these expert insights could help you avoid some of the most common bridal beauty pitfalls.

From booking too late to relying too heavily on social media inspiration, here's what Scotland's bridal beauty professionals want every bride to know.

Choosing a Hairstyle That Doesn't Feel Like You

Shanna from Collective Studios believes one of the biggest mistakes brides make is choosing a hairstyle that simply doesn't suit them

"Choosing a hairstyle that just isn't them. If they never wear their hair up, they should consider down or half up As they won't feel themselves and will always look back and not love their hair."

Your wedding day should be about feeling confident and comfortable, not trying to be someone else

Booking Your Hair & Makeup Too Late

For Makeup by Sarabel, timing is one of the biggest issues.

"Leaving booking hair and makeup until the last minute!"

"Not getting a preview I feel a lot of brides think it's just extra and they might not need it but in reality it's really good for them to see their visions come to life before the big day in case they wanted to tweak anything "

She also points out that many brides underestimate the importance of investing in experienced professionals

"Or booking someone based on price alone."

Hannah Bailey highlighted another common misconception

"Not washing their hair because they 'know' that dirty hair holds better for styling."

In reality, most modern bridal hairstylists actually prefer freshly washed hair, as clean hair provides a better base for styling products and longer-lasting results Always follow your hairstylist's preparation advice.

Choosing Smokey Eyes Because It’s Trending

Another point raised by Makeup by Sarabel is brides requesting looks that don't reflect how they normally wear makeup.

"Wanting something they would never do normally like smokey eye."

Beginning the Planning Journey:

Inverary has a special place in our hearts. Callum played with the pipe band and we had one of our first dates here. We fell in love with The George so when it came to planning our elopement, there was nowhere else we would have wanted it.

We decided on an elopement with just a handful of people there as we didn’t want a big day plus it was planned during Covid so we had no guarantee what the rules would have been by the time it came round.

We had a secret engagement throughout the planning as noone knew at the beginning. Callum took me to design my stunning ring and it sat in a box for months as I couldn’t wear it out in public!

Inspiration and Theme

We really wanted to keep the day simple but also honour the Cowan name Callum’s work created his outfit using the Colqhoun tartan and also replicated it for my son so they were matching. I tied in my flowers to those colours which worked wonderful with the thistles that were in them You cant get married in Scotland without a thistle in your bouquet!

Finding the Right Suppliers

Photography was the main one for us I had followed a girl on Facebook and used her a couple of times for school portraits and I knew she would be perfect. She was just the vibe we wanted and I honestly think she was as excited for our day as we were Our Humanist was selected from The Humanist Society website and she was equally wonderful.

Venue

The George Hotel in Inveraray is truly magical and you can’t help but fall in love with it. We had our ceremony down by the water after being piped down the street by the Pipe Major of Inveraray Stuart Liddel (who was also our witness) which was crazy as we were met by a sea of people recording us…slightly nerve wracking but so lovely Our meal was in the George afterwards and the room was just perfect.

Samantha was just what we wanted and the photos were more than we could have hoped for.

We had no entertainment planned however after the meal the two of us sat in the gorgeous beer garden into the night and listened to the live bands they had playing, it was a wonderful end to our day

Hair and make was done by myself, we just wanted it to be simple and a true reflection of us

Getting Ready and Morning Vibes

The morning was filled with laughter and it was lovely to have my sister and friend with me, along with my son who was delighted as he was getting to share the ‘surprise’ on Facebook before the ceremony started – a very big moment for him!

I remember we sent his photo to my social media just before we left the room and my phone buzzed constantly all the way down the street – don’t know if that helped the nerves or not!

Venue Highlights

Definitely the photos we were allowed to take in the bar of the Tequila shots! The outside beer garden was perfect in the evening as was heated and had fairy lights everywhere, such a chilled vibe and we loved it.

On the drive to our Honeymoon we saw a post in Scotland From The Roadside where someone had captured our photos being taken on the beach and had shared a lovely post, we had no idea that there had been anyone else there so it was a nice surprise

Personal Touches

My sister took my son to a wee shop on the street where he picked out a ‘Love Stone’ for us that would be used in the ceremony and also bought us a painting from the shop by a local artist of Inveraray Castle with a tiny bride and groom outside it.

Advice for Future Brides

Don’t try and please everyone, you only need to please yourselves. This is your day that you will talk about for years so make sure you have no regrets!

SPF & Bridal Makeup: Should You Wear It On Your Wedding Day?

As a bridal makeup artist, I'm often asked whether I recommend SPF on a wedding day My answer is it depends. I personally didn’t use it all the time on Brides and know many Artists who don’t, as it’s only for that one day.

For most weddings, if you're mainly indoors and only popping outside for a few photographs, I'm not overly concerned if SPF isn't part of your skincare routine that morning. One day without it isn't something I'd lose sleep over

However, if you're getting married during a heatwave, like the one we're currently experiencing in the UK, and you're planning an outdoor ceremony, drinks reception or lots of time in the sunshine, then I would recommend wearing SPF.

One thing I always encourage, though, is wearing SPF consistently in the weeks and months leading up to your wedding. It isn’t about this one day, it needs to be something you are already doing in your skincare routine.

Every bridal makeup artist has had to work with tan lines or, even worse, sunburn just before the big day. While we can often soften the appearance with clever makeup techniques, prevention is always better than cure.

Protecting your skin in the lead-up to your wedding helps ensure an even skin tone, keeps your skin healthy and means your makeup will look its absolute best.

There's nothing worse than a beautiful strapless or off the shoulder wedding dress and fresh tan lines, peeling shoulders or a bright red chest. These are things that even the best makeup artists can't completely erase. The same goes for bridesmaids too,

Unexpected tan lines and sunburn can be distracting in photographs and difficult to disguise. A little SPF in the months before your wedding is a simple step that can make a big difference

And don't forget the rest of your body! Brides often remember to protect their face but forget about their shoulders, chest, back and arms These areas are usually on display in a wedding dress and can burn surprisingly quickly.

Chemical vs Physical Sunscreen: What's the Difference?

Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays before they can damage your skin, then safely release that energy as heat. They tend to feel lightweight and disappear into the skin easily

Physical (or mineral) sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

These sit on the surface of the skin and protect it by absorbing UV rays while also reflecting and scattering some of the light. They're often recommended for very sensitive skin but can sometimes leave a slight white cast.

Neither is "better", it's simply about choosing the formula that suits your skin type and that you'll actually enjoy wearing.

What About Flashback in Wedding Photos?

SPF has been known to cause flashback, it's mainly mineral sunscreens containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that have the potential to create a white cast in flash photography, especially with direct flash.

Most modern chemical sunscreens don't cause this issue, and many professional photographers rarely rely on harsh, direct flash anyway.

If you're unsure, the easiest test is to apply your skincare and makeup as you plan to wear it, then take a few photos using your phone's flash. If everything looks natural, you're good to go.

Beautiful makeup starts with healthy, well cared for skin, and that begins long before your wedding morning.

A great tip from fellow makeup artist Colleen Davidson is to keep an SPF facial mist or spray handy for topping up throughout the day, especially at outdoor weddings. Just bear in mind that not all SPF sprays are created equal.

Final Thoughts:

One thing I'd love every bride to remember is that your wedding morning isn't the start of your skincare journey, it's the final step.

As makeup artists, we're often expected to work miracles, but we can't completely erase sunburn, peeling skin or strong tan lines. Wearing SPF in the lead-up to your wedding is one of the simplest ways to help us create the flawless finish you're hoping for

THE BRIDAL BEAUTY FILES: HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR WEDDING MAKEUP ARTIST IN SCOTLAND

Finding the right wedding hair and makeup artist in Scotland isn't always as straightforward as many brides-to-be expect.

With hundreds of talented artists working across the country, the sheer amount of choice can quickly become overwhelming. In fact, helping brides navigate this exact challenge is one of the main reasons I created the directory

I saw first hand how difficult it can be to know where to start, especially when every artist's work looks beautiful online

So, how do you actually choose the right artist for your wedding day?

Start With Style, Not Price

Often Brides to Be start their search based purely on budget. Instead, begin by identifying the makeup style you love.

Are you drawn to soft, natural bridal makeup? Glamorous, fullcoverage looks? Modern, glowing skin? Editorial-inspired beauty?

Search specifically for artists who specialise in the style you're looking for. For example, try terms such as "natural wedding makeup artist Scotland" or "glowy bridal makeup Scotland "

An artist who regularly creates the look you love is far more likely to deliver the results you're dreaming of than someone whose portfolio doesn't align with your vision

Consider Your Budget Realistically.

Once you've narrowed down artists whose style matches your own, budget becomes the next important factor. Bridal beauty pricing varies significantly across Scotland, and there are good reasons for that Experience, training, demand, reputation, travel requirements, and the level of service offered all contribute to an artist's pricing. Remember that you're not simply paying for the few hours spent with you on the wedding morning.

You're investing in years of expertise, premium products, professional kit maintenance, administration, insurance, ongoing training, and the reassurance that comes from hiring someone who has successfully looked after countless brides before you

Pay Attention to Communication.

One of the most overlooked indicators of professionalism is communication How quickly does the artist respond to enquiries? Are their emails clear and helpful? Do they answer your questions thoroughly?

While every artist gets busy during wedding season, prompt and professional communication is often a reflection of how they run their business. If someone consistently takes weeks to reply or doesn't respond at all, it may be worth considering whether they're the right fit for such an important part of your day.

Research Beyond Instagram.

Social media is a fantastic place to discover artists, but don't stop there. Take time to explore their website, read testimonials, browse real wedding galleries, and look for evidence of a professional business presence Most established bridal artists will have either an active social media account, a website, or ideally both.

Look for consistency in their work, recent content, and genuine client reviews. If an artist hasn't posted or updated anything in a long time, it doesn't automatically mean they're unavailable, but it's worth doing a little more research

Check They Cover Your Venue Location.

This sounds obvious, but many brides fall in love with an artist's work before realising they don't travel to their wedding location. Before getting too attached, check whether the artist covers your venue area and whether travel costs apply

Scotland's wedding venues are often located in stunning but remote locations, so understanding travel logistics early can save disappointment later

Book a Bridal Preview.

Once you've shortlisted your favourites, arrange a bridal preview (sometimes called a trial) if possible. A preview isn't just about testing your makeup and hair. It's also an opportunity to see how the artist works, communicate your preferences, and make adjustments before the big day. You'll learn whether they understand your vision and whether you feel comfortable in their chair.

The Importance of the Vibe.

This is something I don't think gets talked about enough. Your hair and makeup artist will likely be one of the first suppliers you see on your wedding morning. They'll spend several hours with you and your bridal party during an emotional and memorable morning for you

You need to genuinely enjoy being around them. The right artist won't just make you look beautiful, they'll help create a calm, positive atmosphere, keep nerves at bay, and become part of your wedding morning experience. Trust your instincts. If you love their work but don't feel a connection, keep looking

Questions Every Bride Should Ask Before

booking, consider asking:

Are you fully insured?

How many people can you cater to on a wedding morning?

Do you specialise in bridal makeup?

How long should I allow for hair and makeup on the wedding morning? What happens if you're unwell or unable to attend?

Final Thoughts.

The best wedding hair and makeup artist isn't necessarily the most expensive, or the cheapest, the most followed on Instagram, or the one everyone else is booking. The best artist is the one whose style you love, whose professionalism you trust, and who makes you feel completely confident and comfortable.

Take your time, do your research, and remember that finding the right artist is about much more than beautiful makeup It's about choosing someone who will help you feel like the very best version of yourself on your wedding morning.
