Resident commissioner calls for probe into ‘drugs for votes’ scheme in prisons

Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera has urged congressional leaders to investigate allegations of a “drugs for votes” scheme within the island’s prison system, following a report that federal prosecutors had gathered evidence of widespread voter coercion tied to the 2024 elections.

In a statement Tuesday, Hernández said the findings described in a ProPublica news report raise serious concerns about election integrity and public corruption, calling them “facts that no elected official in Puerto Rico or Washington can ignore.” He confirmed that discussions with members of Congress are already underway to determine how best to pursue a formal investigation into the matter.

According to the report, the alleged scheme originated in Puerto Rico’s correctional institutions and initially appeared to be a routine drug-trafficking operation. Narcotics agents tracking a prison gang known as Los Tiburones -- Spanish for “The Sharks” -- uncovered a system in which drugs were smuggled into prisons, distributed among inmates, and financed through illicit transactions.

However, investigators soon discovered a more troubling dimension: gang leaders allegedly exchanged drugs for votes, specifically directing inmates to support then-gubernatorial candidate Jenniffer González Colón. To enforce compliance, inmates were threatened with violence or denied access to drugs if they did not follow directives, investigators found.

The scheme reportedly involved cooperation from some corrections employees, who allowed the gang to operate with minimal interference and enforce its own system of discipline within prison facilities. Because Puerto Rico allows incarcerated individuals to vote in local elections, such activities carry significant legal consequences; offering anything of value in exchange for votes constitutes a felony punishable by fines and imprisonment.

Federal investigators had compiled evidence implicating both inmates and prison staff and were reportedly exploring whether any connection existed to González Colón or her campaign. But just as prosecutors were preparing to bring charges in November 2024, days after the general election, they were instructed by supervisors to exclude all voterelated charges and drop potential cases against prison staff, according to individuals familiar with the case.

frustration at the abrupt shift.

“Before the election, it was definitely full steam ahead,” one individual said. “After the election, that all changed.”

The decision to scale back the investigation has raised questions among observers about whether political considerations influenced federal prosecutorial discretion. Supporters of that view point to the timing of the directive and the broader political alignment between González Colón and President Donald Trump, who publicly praised her election victory. Both are Republicans.

Federal officials have denied any improper interference.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico stated that it does not comment on open investigations and emphasized that pursuing public corruption remains a priority when sufficient evidence exists. A spokesperson for the Department of Justice also said senior leadership had no involvement in charging decisions in the case.

González Colón has not been charged with any crime and has not publicly addressed the allegations. Her office did not respond to requests for comment, according to the report.

Additional accounts from within the prison system suggest that voter coercion may have extended beyond the specific criminal case. Puerto Rico’s Civil Rights Commission reported difficulties accessing polling locations inside prisons during the 2024 election and raised concerns about voting conditions, including lack of privacy and possible interference.

Some inmates reportedly submitted complaints describing pressure to vote for specific candidates, though they did not identify gangs directly. Investigators also cited evidence that gang leaders monitored compliance by requiring inmates to show their completed ballots.

An indictment filed in December ultimately charged 34 individuals with drug-related crimes, money laundering, and weapons offenses. While it described the alleged votebuying scheme, it did not include any formal charges related to election fraud.

Shortly after the presidential transition in early 2025, the lead prosecutor was reportedly instructed to halt further investigation entirely. Those involved in the case described

In the tightly contested 2024 New Progressive Party gubernatorial primary, inmate votes were seen as especially influential, with González Colón prevailing by a relatively narrow margin over then-incumbent governor Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia. Reacting to the report later on Tuesday, González Colón asserted that “the correctional population voted overwhelmingly against me and in favor of former Governor Pedro Pierluisi” in that election.

Puerto Rico mourns the loss of basketball icon José ‘Piculín’ Ortiz

Puerto Rico awoke Tuesday to the news that one of its most beloved sports figures, basketball great José Rafael “Piculín” Ortiz Rijos, had died at age 62 after complications related to colorectal cancer.

Ortiz had been hospitalized at Ashford Hospital since last Friday, surrounded by family and close friends.

His passing, confirmed shortly after midnight by the Puerto Rican Basketball Federation, prompted an immediate outpouring of grief from government leaders, the sports community and fans across the island.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón issued a written statement expressing condolences on behalf of the people of Puerto Rico, calling Ortiz “a legend whose sporting spirit lives on in every young person who dreams of shining in sports.” She added that once funeral arrangements are announced, the government will decree an official period of mourning.

Local leaders in Cayey -- where Ortiz grew up -- also honored his memory. Mayor Rolando Ortiz Velázquez and District 29 (Cayey and Cidra) Rep. Gretchen Hau Irizarry described him as “a great Cayey native” and “a star in the sporting firmament,” extending special sympathies to his wife, Sylvia Ríos, and his mother, doña Elba.

A towering figure in Puerto Rican sports

Born on Oct. 25, 1963 in Aibonito and raised in Cayey, Ortiz became known as “Piculín” in childhood -- a nickname that followed him into a storied basketball career. Standing 6 feet, 10 inches, he emerged as one of Puerto Rico’s most dominant centers, beginning in the Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league with the

Atléticos of San Germán at just 17. His talent took him to Oregon State University, where he played alongside Gary Payton and was named Pac-10 Player of the Year in 1987, surpassing future NBA star Reggie Miller of UCLA. That same year, he became only the second Puerto Rican ever drafted into the NBA, selected 15th overall by the Utah Jazz. He played for two seasons with the Jazz at power forward before being waived by the team in February 1990. In his first season (1988-89), Ortiz played in 51 games, 15 as a starter, averaging 6.4 minutes per game as a role player alongside the franchise duo of Karl Malone and John Stockton.

A symbol of national pride

Although his NBA stint was brief, Ortiz built a remarkable international career across Spain, Greece, Venezuela and Puerto Rico. He won titles in the BSN, where he played for the Cangrejeros of Santurce and Capitanes of Arecibo as well as his initial team the At-

léticos, Spain’s Copa del Rey and the FIBA Korać Cup club competition in Europe, and became a fixture of the Puerto Rican National Team for more than two decades.

Ortiz represented Puerto Rico in four Olympic Games -- Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Athens 2004. In the latter he was part of the historic victory over the United States. He also helped secure medals in multiple Pan American Games and led Puerto Rico to a fourth-place finish in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, the island’s best result.

In 2019, he was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, where he described himself as an ambassador of his homeland, carrying “the honor of competing with the flag on my chest against all the sovereign countries of the world.”

A complex, enduring legacy Ortiz’s life included personal struggles -- most notably a 2011 federal conviction related to a marijuana cultivation case, for which he served a short sentence and later expressed deep remorse. Yet his athletic legacy remained intact, and he continued to be celebrated as one of Puerto Rico’s greatest basketball players, and a valued role model.

“His discipline, dedication, and love for the sport made him an example worthy of emulation for our youth,” Puerto Rico Teachers Association President Víctor Manuel Bonilla Sánchez said in a written statement.

Besides his wife and mother, Ortiz is survived by his children, Gabriel and Neira Ortiz (an athlete and champion in Puerto Rico’s top-tier volleyball league), and his siblings.

Energy Bureau cancels LUMA charges against Camuy

Regulator’s order reinforces protections for municipal public facilities

In a decision with wide‑ranging implications for municipalities across Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) has ordered private grid operator LUMA Energy to cancel all disputed electricity charges billed to the Municipality of Camuy for six municipal facilities, ruling that the charges were legally improper under the Contribution in Lieu of Taxes (CELI by its acronym in Spanish) framework.

The ruling not only wipes out the accumulated debt claimed by LUMA, but also strengthens protections for public, non‑profit municipal facilities islandwide. Beyond Camuy, the ruling sends a clear signal to utilities and municipal governments alike. It reinforces that CELI eligibility depends on the actual public, non‑profit use of a facility not on inconsistent administrative classifications over time. It also affirms that utilities cannot retroactively collect charges where they later concede that a facility qualifies for CELI protection.

The unanimous Final Resolution and Order, issued on Monday, conclusively rejects LUMA’s attempt to continue collecting an accumulated electricity debt linked to installa tions that the utility itself has since acknowledged qualify for inclusion under CELI.

The case originated in August 2025, when the Municipal ity of Camuy filed a formal complaint challenging electricity charges associated with six municipal facilities, including the Camuy Urban Park also known as Parque de Pelota Juan “Cheo” López. According to the municipality, the facilities are

Last year the Municipality of Camuy filed a formal complaint challenging electricity charges associated with six municipal facilities, including the Camuy Urban Park -- also known as Parque de Pelota Juan “Cheo” López (pictured). According to the municipality, the facilities are used exclusively for public, community, recreational or athletic activities and do not operate for profit. used exclusively for public, community, recreational or athletic activities and do not operate for profit, making them eligible for CELI coverage.

CELI is a long‑standing statutory mechanism designed to compensate municipalities for the electric utility’s exemption from municipal taxes, while allowing public, non‑profit mu nicipal facilities to receive electricity service without bearing the full direct cost, subject to regulatory caps.

LUMA countered by arguing that Camuy’s claim amounted to a belated objection to past electricity bills a procedural flaw that, it claimed, deprived the PREB of jurisdiction.

The PREB rejected that argument outright. At the heart of the ruling is a clear distinction drawn by the regulator between a late billing complaint and an ongoing legal challenge to the

validity of a debt.

The PREB determined that Camuy was not disputing in dividual electricity bills after the fact, but rather contesting the legality of LUMA’s continued collection of a debt whose legiti macy depends on the classification of the facilities themselves. As long as LUMA continues to demand payment, the controversy remains live and within the agency’s jurisdiction, PREB said.

That clarification is expected to resonate beyond Camuy, as it prevents utilities from insulating disputed charges behind procedural deadlines when the underlying legal basis for the charges is in question

A central factor in the decision was LUMA’s acknowledg ment during the proceedings that five of the six facilities are currently included under CELI. The PREB found no evidence that the nature, use or function of those facilities had changed during the earlier periods for which LUMA was seeking payment.

As a result, the PREB concluded that maintaining charges for prior periods based on a contradictory classification was legally untenable.

Allowing such charges, the ruling states, would effectively validate an artificial distinction between time periods that is unrelated to any actual change in the facilities themselves, while undermining the uniform and reasonable application of the CELI program.

The decision also addresses the Camuy Urban Park, which LUMA had previously excluded from CELI. The admin istrative record showed no material dispute regarding the park’s non‑profit, recreational and public character, nor any evidence of commercial use that would justify exclusion.

In its final orders, the PREB denied LUMA’s motion to dismiss and cancelled the debt of all six facilities.

House leaders to press fiscal board on suspending ‘crudita’ tax

Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos

“Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, along with House Government Committee Chairman Víctor Parés Otero and the rest of the majority New Progressive Party delegation, will be seeking a meeting with members of the Financial Oversight and Man agement Board to request a temporary suspension of the first ‘crudita’, the excise tax on gasoline and diesel established in subsections (a), (f) and (g) of Section 3020.07 of Law 31 2013 (Internal Revenue Code for a New Puerto Rico), as well as its eventual repeal.

The “raw” tax was imposed by the administration of then Gov. Alejandro García Padilla through Law 31 2015.

In total, the treasury collected $141.6 million in fiscal year 2023 from the tax.

“For this House of Representatives, reducing the tax burden on our people is a priority, especially in the area of gasoline, which is a pressing need for our people,” the House speaker said. “However, this cannot be done haphazardly or with irresponsible parameters that put the solvency of the

Puerto Rico government at risk. That is why we are going to meet with members of the oversight board to determine the mechanisms that will allow us to suspend this tax for a specific time and, at the same time, identify the tools to repeal that law.”

According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, the price of gasoline today is $1.18 per liter for regular.

“On April 28, we commissioned the Budget Office of the Legislative Assembly of Puerto Rico to conduct a detailed study on the factors that influence gasoline prices at the pump, including excise tax platforms, with the goal of evaluating possible initiatives to mitigate the price increases our people experience when purchasing this essential fuel,” Méndez Nuñez noted. “The report presented was prepared using official and certified data from the Treasury Department and the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico.”

The results of the study indicated that for the fiscal year 2022 2023, the collections through Law Number 31 2015 totaled $141,600,000.00, which represents 23.8% of the total collections from petroleum products.

On Nov. 1, 2023, the Financial Oversight and Man agement Board for Puerto Rico signed a written communi

cation detailing that the revenues from both ‘cruditas’ (Law 31 2013 and Law 1 2015) represent a significant part of the island government’s budget to support the cost of essential services. They also em phasized that Articles 512 and 513 of Law 53 2021, as amended and better known as the “Law to End the Bankruptcy of Puerto Rico,” repeal the aforementioned articles, allocating the reve nue from those excise taxes to the General Fund. Eliminating the excise tax contained in Law 31 2013 would provide a real savings of six cents per liter of gasoline and/or diesel at the pump and would represent a decrease of $120.6 million annually in revenue for the General Fund, the lawmakers said.

‘The most bipartisan issue since beer’: Opposition to data centers

The monthly meeting in Lyon Township, a small town in southeast Michigan, was packed on a recent Monday, even though the main item on the agenda was an easement for a drain.

Residents, holding notes and water bottles, lined up at the mic to talk about the actual issue on everybody’s minds: the proposed large-scale data center.

They had come prepared.

“Just a reminder,” said a man in a black puffer vest, who identified himself as Larry. “An NFL football field is 57,600 square feet. A 1.8-millionsquare-foot hyperscale data center is about 32 football fields.”

A motorcyclist asked about the potential effects on traffic. Someone asked if the proper procedure had been followed to preserve a habitat of endangered bats. A woman in a pink shirt played a recording of noise from a data center in another Michigan town.

When a town board member gently interrupted a speaker to say her time was up, she exclaimed, “I haven’t even gotten off my first page!”

Lyon Township voted for Donald Trump in 2024, but party loyalties hardly seemed to matter. In an era when Americans are divided on everything — even the cars they drive and the TV shows they watch — data centers seem to have bridged the partisan divide.

Early evidence suggests that Americans — once agnostic — are now souring on them. Last month, Maine became the first state to pass a moratorium on data centers — only for the governor, a Democrat, to veto it — and similar measures have been introduced in at least 13 other states and dozens of municipalities.

In Virginia, a recent poll found the public had turned sharply against data centers. The same is true in Wisconsin, said Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette University Law School Poll, which found that around 70% of people now say the costs outweigh the benefits.

Even more interesting, he said, the state’s deep partisan divide seems to have vanished when it comes to data centers.

“There was stunningly little difference for our normally extremely polarized state,” Franklin said.

Or, as Charlie Berens, a Milwaukee-based comedian, put it recently at a meeting in Juneau, Wisconsin, about a data center: “This is the most bipartisan issue since beer.”

That matches what is happening in Michigan, where citizens of all political stripes are filling once empty town meetings to voice their opposition. Republicans are strategizing with Democrats on Signal chats and Facebook pages. People are becoming experts at extracting government documents, gathering signatures and fundraising to pay for lawyers. They are even writing songs for the cause.

Data centers do have supporters: local officials desperate to bring jobs and tax money into sagging economies, aging

farmers who want to sell their land and labor unions eyeing construction jobs. Many also recognize that artificial intelligence can be a societal good, and that data centers should not be blocked entirely but simply be regulated, much like civil aviation or road traffic.

Some new bills in Congress are moving in that direction, and, reflecting just how politically unpredictable the issue is, they have come from lawmakers as far apart ideologically as Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Josh Hawley, R-Mo.

Meanwhile, data center construction is surging, with politics racing ahead of policy, sometimes with dangerous consequences. Last month, an Indianapolis council member said a gunman fired 13 shots into his home, injuring no one, after he voted to approve a center. An accompanying note read, “No Data Centers.”

In Michigan, where, according to one count, at least 50 towns have passed efforts to pause data centers, the issue has the potential to scramble politics in a year with three crucial House races, a dead-heat Senate race and an open governor’s seat. And because Democrats run the state, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer pushed for a law that offered tax incentives for data centers, they could be the first to feel the backlash.

“There is a political realignment going on,” said Christy McGillivray, an environmental activist. “Doing this work right now, I feel like the ground is shifting under my feet. The words I have used my entire life to describe politics are not adequate anymore, or accurate.”

Data centers are being built to power the AI boom, and the projects are vast, often multibillion-dollar endeavors. They are powerful new forces in local economies, and because they demand a lot of energy and water, and are massive structures, they also threaten to change the land itself.

In interviews with residents in seven towns in Michigan, people cited different reasons for their opposition — higher electricity prices, decreased home values, environmental

damage and fear of AI.

But it was the sheer scale of the proposals, the suddenness with which they’ve appeared and the secrecy surrounding them that is punching emotion into the issue, turning out thousands of Democrats and Republicans for tense town hall meetings around the state.

Residents said they often discovered a data center project in their town through a quiet rezoning request by a company no one recognized. They said their small town boards were outmatched compared with wealthy companies in a hurry to break ground.

There is no official count of the number of proposed projects in the state, but Michael Bommarito, a Michigan-based former tech worker who published an activist handbook, “How to Fight a Data Center,” counted at least 16 major projects as of December.

In Lyon Township, Starlet Peedle, 79, a retired teachers’ assistant, said she first heard about the project after the town’s planning commission had given it provisional approval.

Worried that the center would be too close to a school and would diminish the value of her home, she began going to town meetings.

She said she heard few answers to her questions. How much would her electric bill go up? What company was behind the project? How would it affect her well?

A town meeting in January intended to answer people’s questions felt more like a marketing session, residents said.

“I think it’s sneaky,” Peedle said of the approach. Projects are given obscure names, like “Project Cannoli,” and “Project Cherry Blossom.”

In Lyon Township, the proposal is called “Project Flex.”

“I don’t know why it wasn’t just called ‘Project Data Center,’” Geoff Barker said at the Monday meeting. “I mean it could have been ‘Project Evasive’ or ‘Project Disingenuous.’”

Lise Blades, a high school English teacher who is one of the township’s seven trustees, said the town did not name the project and the words “data center” were on the agenda when it was first discussed last September. She said trustees were stuck between angry residents and state officials, who, she argued, had lured the data centers with the tax breaks, but were now offering no help.

Supreme Court agrees to fast-track Louisiana voting map decision

The Supreme Court on Monday evening agreed to immediately transmit to the lower courts its opinion striking down Louisiana’s congressional map, rather than wait 32 days, as would have been routine.

Last week’s landmark opinion from the court, which weakened the Voting Rights Act by concluding that one of Louisiana’s majority-Black congressional districts was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander, has set off a chaotic scramble in the state.

Gov. Jeff Landry, a Republican, delayed a primary for House races, even with early voting scheduled to begin Saturday, so that the state Legislature could work to immediately redraw maps. Republicans, who control the Legislature, are expected to try to eliminate at least one of the state’s two majority-Black districts. (Early voting in the state’s other races, including votes on constitutional amendments and a hotly contested Republican Senate primary, went forward.)

It was not immediately clear what effect Monday’s decision to send the case back to the lower courts without delay would have on the effort to speedily redistrict. Those moves have been challenged in court.

But a group of white voters who had challenged the Louisiana map and won their case before the Supreme Court had requested the move, believing that the technical step would make it easier to proceed quickly, and the court’s action does clear one barrier to drawing a new map.

In a one-paragraph, unsigned order, the court explained that “ordinarily,” the clerk of the Supreme Court waits the 32 days to send the opinion, in order to give the losing party time to ask the justices to reconsider the case. It is exceptionally rare for the court to agree to rehear a case once it has been argued and decided.

In the Louisiana case, the justices wrote, state officials who had defended the map and were on the losing side of the case had not opposed the request to expedite.

Although a group of Black voters who had intervened in the case had expressed their opposition, the justices wrote, those voters had “not expressed any intent” to use the 32-day window to ask the court to reconsider its decision.

In a scathing dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, one of the court’s three liberals and the first Black woman to serve on the court, asserted that the court’s decision to overturn Louisiana’s voting map had “spawned chaos” in the state.

She called the court’s decision to expedite the transmittal of the opinion “tantamount to an approval of Louisiana’s rush to pause the ongoing election in order to pass a new map.” She said the court was diving into the political fray with an abandon that was “unwarranted and unwise.”

Justice Samuel Alito, one of the court’s conservatives, responded in an unusually sharply worded concurrence. Jackson’s position, he wrote, “would require that the 2026 congressional elections in Louisiana be held under a map that has been held to be unconstitutional.” He was joined by Justices Clarence Thomas and Neil Gorsuch, both conservatives.

irresponsible charge.”

The ruling was the latest move in a scramble to draw up new midterms maps across the South following the court’s landmark ruling on April 29, which gutted the remaining pillar of the Voting Rights Act.

The court’s decision in the case, Louisiana v. Callais, found that the state’s map, which had created a second majority-Black district, violated the Constitution’s equal protection clause.

That decision could make it harder for lawmakers to create majority-minority districts throughout the country and has set off a scramble in states across the South to redistrict before the midterm elections. Absentee ballots had already been requested in some states.

Louisiana’s Legislature was already in session when the ruling came down. Two Republican-led states in the South — Alabama and Tennessee — are convening special legislative sessions this week, aiming to take action before their primaries. Alabama, which gaveled into session Monday, is moving to delay some of its primaries in hopes that the Supreme Court will pave the way for them to take up a new map.

“Tiny townships are left with no resources” to handle the issue, she said, noting that calls to state officials have gone unanswered. “We have nothing. Colloquially, our butts are in the wind.”

A spokesperson for Whitmer did not respond to a request for comment.

Once people come together, their work builds trust. That is breaking down divides, and making our entrenched, nationalized politics local again.

Ryan Wagner, founder of the Northern Michigan Hunters club, used to think of himself as a strong MAGA supporter. He owned a hat. He once created a Facebook page called “Freedom from Tyranny.”

But when preparations for a data center began in his small town of Kalkaska, in northern Michigan,

he joined forces with Seth Bernard, a left-leaning musician and environmental activist.

“The Ryan of five years ago probably wouldn’t have talked to him,” Wagner, 41, said.

But they started talking and found shared interests: Worry for the river where Wagner fishes; fear, as fathers, of how to handle AI chatbots for their children. They also had common enemies — powerful tech companies, Michigan Democrats who gave those businesses tax breaks, and Trump, who opposes state regulation of AI.

Wagner has become less sure of his politics too. He said he is still conservative but doesn’t feel Republican anymore. The data center is part of the reason.

“We’ve been foes for a long time,” he said of Democrats, “but when it comes down to our backyards, we realized we are really just the same people.”

NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL

His majesty and our travesty

The last time Charles came here for a state visit, nobody seemed to notice.

I saw him up close during his trip in the autumn of 1985, from his stop at JCPenney in a suburban mall to promote British clothing to a starry state dinner. I was impressed.

The Prince of Wales had a reputation back then as a bit of a wimp, always chafing in the shadow of his towering mother, resentful about being relegated to cutting ribbons.

In a flashy decade full of bling kings like New York developer Donald Trump, Charles seemed like a man from another time. He yearned to be taken seriously and to have an impact on global issues. As charming British actor Peter Ustinov, who attended the state dinner, told me: “He has a clear sense of what he would do if allowed to. One regrets that he didn’t live in 1400.”

Touring the sights in Washington, Prince Charles impressed salesclerks and senators alike with his genuine interest in culture and politics and his playful and self-deprecating small talk.

As I wrote in The New York Times back then, “He went out of his way to move past protocol, and was equally at home discussing the architecture of Baltimore, the actresses on the television show ‘Dynasty,’ the opera roles that Beverly Sills made famous and the tenuous state of international relations.” It didn’t matter. Nobody was paying attention. He was simply the man who accompanied Princess Diana to

Washington.

Even without talking much, just tucking her chin in shyly and looking up out of those luminous blue eyes, Diana outshone her prince. It was pretty much a total eclipse of the son. I don’t remember seeing a single picture of Charles from the state dinner. His remarks are lost to history.

All eyes were on the Sloane Square Cinderella. The state dinner was Diana’s fairy tale turn, conjured by her fairy godmother, Nancy Reagan. The first lady invited Clint Eastwood, Mikhail Baryshnikov and John Travolta to dance with the princess who loved dancing. Mrs. Reagan directed the Marine Band to put aside the society two-step sheet music and get up to speed on the “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack.

“She’s a great little mover,” Travolta said of Diana, who wore a gorgeous midnight blue velvet gown and a diamond tiara.

The total effect of the visit was “Charles who?” Being overshadowed by his young wife, after decades of being overshadowed by his mother, did not boost his ego.

The ensuing decades would not be kind to Charles. He was mired in scandal and pain.

But in Washington last week, Charles came into his own. Forty years after Diana’s Cinderella turn, Charles got to be Cinderfella.

In a country rife with No Kings protests, this king was a tonic. He presented himself with elegance, intelligence and wit — everything that has been wanting in Washington during the Trump era.

He arrived at a propitious moment to remind the autocrat in the White House why Britain’s rebellious colony ran away: to escape the tyranny of an oppressive king.

“Out of the fires of a bitter and bloody Revolutionary War, the triumph of the father of this country, George Washington, and his fellow founders was to forge a democracy founded upon the rights to liberty and the rule of law,” Charles said at the state dinner.

In his pointed speech to Congress, he reminded the lawmakers that our Constitution, based on Magna Carta, provides checks on a tyrant’s power.

President Donald Trump walks King Charles III to his vehicle after a visit to the White House in Washington, April 28, 2026. Anyone familiar with the causes Charles championed as Prince of Wales could infer his ideological differences with Trump. (Anna Rose Layden/The New York Times)

Gently mocking the territorial Trump at the state dinner, Charles noted that he is already the king of Canada — no need for another. He also teased: “Now I know you have big plans for the moon, Mr. President, but I’ve checked the papers and I rather suspect it is already part of the Commonwealth, I’m afraid!”

He quoted Shakespeare’s “Henry V” to prompt the bellicose president to seek peace: “my speech entreats, that I may know ... why gentle Peace should not ... bless us with her former qualities.”

It was lovely to hear the King’s English, devoid of the vengeance, blasphemy and vulgarity common in our leader’s language.

The king put a salve on a blistered partnership. Trump has trashed Prime Minister Keir Starmer as “cowardly” and a “loser” for not helping with Iran. Britain’s ambassador, Christian Turner, didn’t help with his leaked comment that the “special relationship” America has now is with Israel.

On his last state visit, Charles was in the shade of Diana’s radiance. On this one, he radiated an élan of his own — a class act, shining next to the boorish Trump. At long last, Charles was in no one’s shadow. At 77, he has done what he always yearned to do: make his mark on the world. Dr. Ricardo Angulo

The king deftly schooled Donald, and Donald took it because he has always been awed by the British royal family. The president was thrilled when a British newspaper did a genealogy that found he may be a distant cousin of Charles. (Then again, so are the Bushes.) Trump even dropped the tariffs on Scotch whisky to please the king.

Charles gently reminded the president, who has been blasting NATO for not helping bail him out of the Iran quicksand, that America’s allies stepped up after 9/11. Britain battled in Afghanistan beside us, and tried to rebuild it with us, for 20 years.

“Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish,” Charles said.

The message to Trump was obvious: Don’t berate us for not backing your misadventure in Iran, after we went all in on America’s misbegotten occupation of Afghanistan and war in Iraq.

‘Hokum’ review: You can check in, but you might not check out

Irish filmmaker Damian McCarthy, in common with his genre colleague Osgood Perkins, likes to seed familiar horror setups with moments of ludicrousness that destabilize his scares and discombobulate his viewers. Very little in his movies can be taken at face value — not even their titles, which announce themselves with winking humility.

“Hokum,” McCarthy’s third and most accomplished feature, continues this tradition. Set almost exclusively in a creaky Irish hotel surrounded by woodland, this effective folk horror introduces Ohm Bauman (a perfectly cast Adam Scott), a cranky, depressed novelist and likely alcoholic. Ohm — whose name suggests a Zen-like attitude its owner clearly does not possess — is struggling to finish his trilogy on the conquistadors and has come to the hotel where his parents once honeymooned to scatter their ashes beneath his mother’s favorite tree.

Still haunted by the violent dissolution of his family when he was a child, Ohm has little patience for the hotel’s many peculiarities. These include a gabby bellboy and aspiring writer (Will O’Connell) who will soon regret pestering Ohm for career advice; a friendly eccentric named Jerry (David Wilmot), who lives in a van in the forest happily glugging a homemade potion of magic mushrooms in goats’ milk; and a passel of narcissistic goats who keep jumping on guests’ cars to admire themselves in the paintwork — or so says the hotel handyman (Michael

Patric) who enjoys shooting the offenders with his ever-present crossbow. As a bonus, there’s a witch patrolling the hotel’s nowsealed honeymoon suite — the fetid location where Ohm’s overstuffed psychological baggage will eventually be unpacked. Reveling in misdirection and a teasing duality — Jerry initially presents as both sincere helper and loony hindrance —

“Hokum” profits from Colm Hogan’s insinuating camera as it noses through gloomy corridors and a terrifying dumbwaiter shaft, hinting at what lurks on the other side of the frame. A wonderfully spooky production design (by Til Frohlich) braces the ominous atmosphere as Ohm searches for a missing hotel employee (Florence Ordesh)

while battling demons of both the corporeal and ethereal varieties. A shocking en-

ding to the first act derails our expectations and opens the door for multiple interpretations of what follows: Is Ohm grappling with the supernatural, or hallucinating a way to purge his trauma and overcome his writer’s block? Or is something even more sinister going on?

I’m not telling, and neither is McCarthy, whose sneaky script seems especially suited to Scott’s slightly stunned acting style and a line delivery that leans naturally toward snark. Ohm isn’t simply unpleasant; he can be cruel. Yet, unlike many horror movies, “Hokum” hews closer to hope than cynicism, suggesting that we could all benefit from laying down our burdens. This cheeky approach to the uncanny is one of McCarthy’s signatures, allowing him to tweak his setups in ways that can turn gasps into giggles. If you asked him, he would probably say that either was the correct response.

Set almost exclusively in a creaky Irish hotel surrounded by woodland, this effective folk horror introduces Ohm Bauman, a cranky, depressed novelist and likely alcoholic.

Wall Street stocks touch records on upbeat earnings, dip in oil

Gulf tensions flared on Monday as U.S. attempts to shepherd ships through the Strait of Hormuz met resistance from Iran, including an attack on a UAE oil port. Crude prices leapt in response, but they’ve eased slightly heading into Tuesday.

Markets remain torn between the precarious geopolitical situation on the one hand and dramatic upgrades to U.S. earnings growth and AI spending forecasts on the other, with global shares edging higher early on Tuesday.

I’ll get into that and more below.

But first, listen to the latest episode of the Morning Bid daily podcast, where I discuss why markets still appear upbeat despite the latest tensions in the Gulf.

Subscribe to hear Reuters journalists discuss the biggest news in markets and finance seven days a week.

Oil prices jumped by about 6% and major U.S. indexes retreated on Monday as the fresh U.S.-Iran exchanges suggested that we could see the return of a hot war. Brent and WTI crude settled at over $114 and $106 per barrel, respectively.

But reports that at least one ship - a U.S.-flagged vehicle carrier - was escorted out of the strait by the U.S. military took crude off those highs and helped calm wider markets early on Wall Street futures were in the green before the bell, while European shares opened higher thanks to upbeat earnings. Asian shares edged down in holidaythinned trading, with markets closed in Japan and South Korea.

Investors will be hoping the geopolitical situation doesn’t escalate further, so that they can refocus on what’s proving to be another blockbuster earnings season. Full-year S&P 500 earnings growth forecasts have been revised upward to as high as 23%, from 18% just a month ago. Tuesday.

Driving that was another upgrade of AI spending estimates, with Morgan Stanley now seeing the capex growth of the top five ‘hyperscalers’ exceeding $800 billion this year and $1.1 trillion next year. Goldman Sachs reckons the cumulative spend to 2031 will be as much as $7.6 trillion.

U.S. companies set to report earnings later today include AMD, Pfizer and KKR.

Elsewhere, markets are keeping a wary eye on transatlantic tensions after President Trump’s threat late last week to raise tariffs on EU auto imports to 25%. That dragged down European automakers’ shares by around 2% on Monday.

Stateside, a big week for labor market data will also kick off

today with the release of JOLTS job openings data for March. And in deal activity, investors are puzzling over an audacious $56 billion bid for online retailer eBay by GameStop, the video game retailer that achieved ‘meme stock’ fame in 2021.

Australia’s central bank lifted rates for a third time this year on Tuesday, returning borrowing costs to post-pandemic highs of 4.35% and warning that inflation would remain sticky as the conflict in the Middle East unleashed a global oil shock.

Money markets imply around a 15% chance of a further move in June, but an increase to 4.6% by September is fully priced in - and that would be the highest since late 2011.

Trump looks for a silver bullet to end the Iran war. There may

President Donald Trump keeps looking for the magic formula that will deliver him victory in Iran. First was the airstrike last June intended, he said, to “obliterate” Iran’s nuclear program. Then came the intense February air campaign carried out with Israel and designed, he said, to deliver regime change and a popular uprising. Then he bet on a blockade of Iranian shipping to end the Iranian stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

Now, in a new effort to break Iran’s control over the strait, Trump has announced a plan with few details to help guide stranded ships out through it. Iran responded Tuesday with missiles and drones, and given the risks, most tankers are unlikely to dare crossing the strait for now.

But Trump’s conviction that these tactics will bring about Iran’s capitulation is deeply flawed, officials and analysts say. They say it is a misreading of the Islamic Republic’s strategy, psychology and capability for adaptation. The Iranian government believes that it has the upper hand for now, and that it can withstand economic pressure, as it has in the past, longer than Trump can tolerate rising energy prices brought about by the halting of traffic through the strait.

If anything, Iran’s positions have hardened. But Trump’s tactics have not changed.

“At every point when pressure has not delivered the intended result, he’s sought a new tool of coercion which he believed would magically conjure victory,” said Ali Vaez, Iran project director for the International Crisis Group. “He always believes he’s one little turn of the screw away.”

Pressure can work over time, “but pressure without an open door is an exercise in futility,” Vaez said. “Trump doesn’t understand that no matter the pressure, so long as you don’t give them a facesaving way out and a mutually beneficial agreement — not capitulation or surrender — you won’t get a deal.”

Experts are dubious that time will work in Trump’s favor.

The United States “can certainly do more damage to the Iranian economy, but they have withstood more pressure than any other economy in history, and that hasn’t produced the collapse of the

Commuters ride a bus in Tehran, Iran, May 2, 2026. President Donald Trump is trying to ratchet up the economic pressure on Tehran, but Iran’s government is unlikely to make a deal without a big, face-saving compromise. (Arash Khamooshi/The New York Times)

regime or more reasonable positions,” said Suzanne Maloney, an Iran specialist and director of the foreign policy program at the Brookings Institution.

Iran is such an authoritarian state that the kind of political drivers that might push compromise don’t exist, she said, with the regime already executing protesters on a regular basis. Trump, too, seems uninterested in compromise for now, despite the economic pain from high energy prices.

In any case, she said, “I’m skeptical that the blockade will succeed in the time frame we would need for the global economy and for Trump’s prospects in the midterm elections.”

Trump told reporters in Washington on Tuesday that the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz had been “amazing,” saying, “nobody’s going to challenge the blockade.” He also reiterated his claim that “Iran wants to make a deal,” but he said its leaders were “playing games” by talking to him and then saying on television that they had not.

The conflict is a test of wills between Iran and the United States. The two sides have only limited knowledge of each other, having rarely been in the same room with each other, said Sanam Vakil, direc-

tor of the Middle East and North Africa program at Chatham House. “They have culturally very different approaches to dealmaking and they talk past each other,” she said.

“I think President Trump doesn’t really understand what drives the Iranians,” she added. “They don’t make decisions based on their GDP, because if so, they would have done a deal years ago.”

Although the economic stakes are high for Iran, Trump appears to have miscalculated how dire they are. He seems to be betting that Iran’s capacity to store the oil it is pumping but cannot export will soon run out and force Iran to make major concessions.

be none.

“If they don’t get their oil moving, their whole oil infrastructure is going to explode,” Trump said late last month, adding, “They say they only have about three days left before that happens.”

That was an obvious overstatement. Oil experts believe Iran has at least several weeks before it must stop pumping. Iran, which was exporting some 1.81 million barrels of oil in April, can reduce its production while continuing to store oil in empty or older tankers, which can hold an estimated 2 million barrels each, shipping some of it by road and rail to Pakistan.

During Trump’s first term, Iran ramped down production to about 200,000 barrels a day without significant damage to its oil infrastructure.

“Iran is not particularly close to even starting” to shut down its wells, said Brett Erickson of Obsidian Risk Advisors. Sanctions and the blockade will move the needle, but “there is no feasible scenario by which they will produce the necessary result in a feasible timeline” for Trump, he said, one reason the president is now trying his new plan to break Iran’s blockade. Even if the war ends today, Erickson said, “it will be multiple months before things return to normal.”

Quiet talks with the Americans continue as the regime sees this moment of impasse as a chance to solve its long-standing conflict with the United States. But that is different from caving under coercion.

Iran would like a deal, but its leaders believe that surrender to pressure only invites more pressure in the future, Vaez said. So Iran wants to retain its hold on the strait and charge tolls to pay for reconstruction, not trusting any U.S. president to provide sanctions relief. “They don’t want to survive the hot war to freeze in a cold peace,” he said.

US revokes visas of board members at Costa Rica’s top watchdog newspaper

In 2022, La Nación, Costa Rica’s leading newspaper, broke several stories documenting a major sexual harassment investigation involving a presidential candidate, Rodrigo Chaves, who worked at the World Bank at the time.

Chaves was eventually elected as the country’s leader even though an internal investigation by the bank, where he held a senior position, led to his demotion.

As president, he has cozied up to Trump officials and has often used his position to frame the newspaper as an enemy of his administration. He berated its journalists and accused them of wanting to damage his government.

On Saturday, the U.S. State Department barred most of La Nación’s executives from traveling to the United States, the newspaper said in a statement. La Nación said the Trump administration had revoked the U.S. visas of five of its seven board members without an official explanation.

The newspaper said the move was “unprecedented.” The visa decision appeared to be part of a larger strategy by the White House to punish its critics and reward its allies, analysts said.

“In the absence of any explanation for this decision or objective reasons to support it, only one conclusion can be drawn: Its purpose has been to punish La Nación’s editorial stance,” the newspaper said in an editorial Monday.

“Applying such a measure to nearly the entire board of a media outlet is unprecedented in our history,” it added. “In fact, we are not aware of any similar cases in other democratic countries.”

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

La Nación’s board members are the latest in a long line of people in Costa Rica whose U.S. visas have been revoked. It started shortly after Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited the Central American country last year. He showered Chaves with praise at a news conference and called Costa Rica “a model for what we want to see other countries in the region become and, frankly, the world.”

Rubio celebrated Costa Rica’s decision to ban Chinese 5G vendors, such as Huawei — a decree that Chaves signed in 2023 — and said that Chinese companies were a threat to the security of the region.

“We’re going to try to work in cooperation with you,” Rubio told Chaves then, “to impose costs on those within the country who use their positions of authority to undermine the interests of the people of Costa Rica.”

Two weeks later, the State Department revoked the U.S. visas of two opposition lawmakers who were vocal critics of Chaves’ 5G decree. Then it yanked the visa of Óscar Arias — a two-time president of Costa Rica and Nobel Peace Prize winner who, during his second term, broke diplomatic ties with Taiwan and partnered with China. It also pulled the U.S. visa of his brother, Rodrigo Arias, the president of the legislative assembly, who had favored trade with China.

In total, U.S. officials have canceled the visas of at least 15 Costa Rican officials and citizens, including former legislators and magistrates, “reportedly due to unspecified ties to China,” according to a report from the U.S.-based Congressional Research Service.

But analysts said that the latest targets at La Nación, including the board’s president, Pedro Abreu, signaled a broader pattern of punishing those who had criticized or scrutinized Chaves, who has sought to dismantle some of the country’s democratic checks and balances.

“It is extremely serious that the United States is using its immigration policy to punish political opponents” in Costa Rica, said Felipe Alpízar, the coordinator of the observatory on U.S. policy at the University of Costa Rica. The list includes people, he added, who do not represent “a risk to the United States at all.”

A spokesperson for Chaves, 64, did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Revoking the visas of journalists who have exposed irregularities and possible acts of corruption in the Costa Rican government also goes against the United States’ previous efforts

to promote democracy and a free press in the region, raising suspicions that the revocations could be the result of private deals between Chaves and the Trump administration.

“The only person who benefits from intimidating the press in Costa Rica is the president of Costa Rica himself,” Mauricio Herrera, a former Costa Rican communications minister, said in an interview.

All the members of La Nación’s board who had their visas revoked are Costa Rican nationals, Abreu, the board’s president, said in an interview, and several have personal, family, academic or professional ties to the United States. The only two members who were not affected, he added, hold passports from countries that do not require a traditional visa to enter the United States.

“This situation will not change our editorial line or our commitment to freedom of the press,” Abreu said.

Chaves, whose term ends Friday, and his handpicked successor, Laura Fernández, a minister in his government who was elected this year, have offered a series of major concessions to the United States. The latest occurred in March, when Costa Rica agreed to take up to 25 foreign-born deportees a week from the United States — even though the country was severely criticized last year for temporarily confining 200 U.S. deportees in a former pencil factory. Last year, two days after Trump took office, Chaves hinted at the kind of relationship he was hoping for with the United States.

“We understand this will be a relationship focused more on specific, transactional points rather than altruistic themes like democracy and so on,” he said at a news conference. “We’ll dance to whatever tune they play.”

US military strikes boat in Caribbean, killing 2

The U.S. military said Monday that it had struck another boat in the Caribbean Sea, killing two men as part

of a campaign against people the Trump administration accuses of smuggling drugs by sea.

The strike was ordered by Gen. Francis L. Donovan, the head of the U.S. Southern Command, which oversees operations in Latin America, Central America and the Caribbean, the command said in a statement.

The two deaths raised the overall toll to at least 187 in the U.S. campaign against boats in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific. There have been more than 50 strikes since the campaign began in September.

The command released video showing a projectile flying toward a boat at sea. Citing unspecified intelligence, officials said the vessel was engaged in drug trafficking along known smuggling routes and that the strike killed “two male narco-terrorists.”

Experts in the use of lethal force have argued that the strikes are illegal because the military is not permitted to target civilians who do not pose an imminent threat of violence, even if they are suspected of engaging in crimes. The Trump administration has not provided evidence of drug smuggling. The White House has said that the killings are lawful. The Trump administration said in a notice to Congress that President Donald Trump had “determined” that the United States is in a formal armed conflict with drug cartels and that crews of drug-running boats are “combatants.”

Shipping firms left guessing by confusion in Strait of Hormuz

Shipping companies said earlier this week that President Donald Trump’s offer to provide them safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz fell short of the sort of arrangements that would persuade them to make the trip.

Trump said Sunday that the United States would “guide” commercial vessels through the strait, which Iran has effectively closed since the war in the Persian Gulf started two months ago. But the president provided few details on how the program, Project Freedom, would work.

On Monday, Adm. Brad Cooper, the head of the military’s Central Command, said U.S. warships had shot down cruise missiles and drones that Iran fired at the ships and commercial vessels that the Navy was guiding through the Strait of Hormuz. Central Command said two American commercial ships had sailed through the strait. Maersk, the Danish shipping giant, said Monday that one of its vessels, a vehicle carrier flying the U.S. maritime flag, had gone through the strait.

But there were reports that other ships were struck. The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of launching a drone attack on an oil tanker owned by ADNOC, its state oil company, according to the Emirati state news agency. And a South Korean cargo ship caught fire Monday after an explosion in the strait, the South Korean Foreign Ministry said.

Four ships went through the strait Monday, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence. Before the war, around 130 vessels made the passage daily.

Fearing attacks by Iran on their vessels, shipping companies have been reluctant to send vessels through the strait. They say Iran needs to be part of any plan to move large numbers of vessels through the waterway.

Ali Abdollahi, a top Iranian military commander, warned “all commercial ships and oil tankers to refrain from any attempt to transit without coordination with the armed forces,” according to an Iranian state media report Monday.

Without an agreement from Iran, “there is a risk of hostilities breaking out again,” said Jakob P. Larsen, the chief safety and security officer of the Baltic and International Maritime Council, which represents companies in the maritime sector.

“It is unclear whether Project Freedom

is sustainable in the longer run or whether it will be a limited operation to get some of the trapped ships out,” Larsen added.

Tom Bartosak-Harlow, a spokesperson for the International Chamber of Shipping, a maritime trade group, said Trump’s plan lacked detail.

“There is much uncertainty around what Project Freedom means in practice, but any plans put in place must be done in a coordinated and transparent manner,” he said in a statement. Bartosak-Harlow said the chamber was calling on all countries, Iran included, “to work together to seek a swift and transparent resolution to restore freedom of navigation.”

Hapag-Lloyd, a large container shipping company, has several vessels stuck in the Persian Gulf that it would like to send through the strait. “At this stage, our risk assessment remains unchanged, and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed for Hapag-Lloyd transits until further notice,” the company said in a statement Monday.

Iran’s stranglehold on the strait has cut off a significant proportion of the world’s supply of oil and natural gas.

Most of the ships that have gone through the waterway since the war began have taken a route that runs close to Iran’s coastline, indicating that the ship operators got Iran’s permission to make the passage.

Insurance costs are a main reason cargo ships are not traveling through the strait, Ana Subasic, a trade risk analyst at Kpler, said in an email. “Even if a captain is willing to sail, owners, lenders, charterers and cargo interests may refuse to,” she added.

“Project Freedom has a moderate

chance of extracting some vessels, especially U.S.-flagged or highly coordinated low-risk vessels, but a low chance of fully reopening Hormuz quickly unless it becomes legally clear, less expensive and diplomatically coordinated,” Subasic said.

The U.S. military commanders said they were hoping that Project Freedom would encourage more ships to venture through the strait.

“We’ve now opened a passage through the Strait of Hormuz to allow for the free flow of commerce to proceed,” Cooper said on a conference call with reporters Monday.

He declined to say how Central Command would determine which commercial ships to guide. But he said the command had reached out to dozens of ships and shipping companies to encourage them to use the protection of the U.S. military — but not specifically naval escorts — to defy Iran’s blockade of the strait.

In a statement about the transit of its car-

carrier vessel, Maersk thanked the U.S. military “for its professionalism and effective coordination in making this operation possible.”

Hundreds of ships are still trapped in the Strait of Hormuz, leaving their crews stranded.

“Lives of sailors are in utmost danger — they have such scarcity of drinking water,” said P.A. Khan, who oversees the branch of the Maritime Union of India in Chennai, India. “What Trump is saying makes things more difficult and not easier.”

The International Maritime Organization, which monitors developments, said about 20,000 mariners on around 1,600 vessels were trapped in the Persian Gulf. “My call is to release the seafarers because they are not at fault,” Arsenio Dominguez, the group’s secretary-general, said in a statement last week.“The situation is not improving.”

Nearly 30 ships have been attacked since the war began, according to the organization.

Mets beat Osos in Gurabo

The Capitanes of Arecibo and the Mets of Guaynabo both recorded victories on Monday night in Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) league games.

At the Palacio de Recreación y Deportes in Mayagüez, the Capitanes defeated the Indios 87-85 in a game decided in the final seconds, thereby putting together back-toback victories following their win the previous day against the Atléticos of San Germán.

The Indios got off to a better start, taking the first quarter 25-18. In the second period, the Capitanes rallied to tie the score at 48 heading into halftime.

In the second half, Arecibo took control by winning the third quarter 26-19, entering the final period with a 74-67 lead.

The Capitanes maintained control through much of the fourth quarter, but the

Indios rallied in the final minutes to pull within a single possession.

In the closing seconds, Arecibo executed from the free-throw line and defended the Indios’ final possession to secure the road victory.

Jack McVeigh led the Capitanes with 23 points, while Derrick Walton Jr. contributed 12 points, 11 rebounds and 8 assists. Timothy Soares added 17 points and 8 rebounds, and Justin Reyes tallied 13 points.

Capitanes win 2nd game in 2 days Guayama, Carolina earn victories as Double-A playoffs take shape

The Brujos of Guayama and the Gigantes of Carolina notched victories on Monday in the Double-A Superior Baseball League.

The Brujos defeated the Potros of Santa Isabel, 10-3.

The result eliminated the Potros (8-12) from contention and secured a postseason berth for both the Brujos (10-10) and the Peces Voladores of Salinas (9-11).

Consequently, the possibility of a challenge game between the South and Central

sections was also ruled out.

Right-hander Ramón Garriga pitched 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts to earn the win for Guayama. Alexis García, Cristián Rosa and Jean Alvarado worked in relief, with Alvarado earning the save.

Omar Gómez spearheaded the offense with three RBIs, while Edison Mora and Christian Maldonado each scored two runs.

The loss went to Santa Isabel’s Christian Rivera Renovales.

In the Southern semifinals, the Peces Voladores will face the Poetas of Juana Díaz in Series A, while the Maratonistas of Coamo will square off against the Brujos in Series B. Lakers praise Thunder before playoff series: ‘One of the greatest teams ever’

There is no point in being disillusioned about what the Los Angeles Lakers have to do, coach JJ Redick said. To keep their season alive, they will have to find a way to beat a team that, he said, is not simply the best in the NBA this year.

“I said to a bunch of people yesterday off site talking about this series, to me, the Thunder is one of the greatest teams ever in NBA history,” he said. “It’s just the reality. They’re that good.

“I think our guys recognize that and respect that, and we know what kind of task we have in front of us.”

Game 1 of the best-of-seven Western Conference semifinals series was scheduled for Tuesday night in Oklahoma City.

There is plenty of respect coming from the Lakers players and coaches for their second-round opponent. Austin Reaves credited Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s three-level scoring and his ability to get to the free-throw line. Jake LaRavia mentioned the Thunder’s incredible depth. Redick praised how disruptive the Thunder defense is in virtually every aspect.

“The reality of their defense is that whatever moments we felt Houston pressuring, like the maximum amount of pressure they put on us, that’s OKC’s base line. That’s their core,” Redick said. “You’re talking about a team that’s, they’re top five in every category that’s disruptive-based: steals, blocks, turnovers forced, all that stuff. And they don’t foul. They somehow do all of that without fouling, which is one of the most remarkable things I think in NBA history.”

The Thunder were called for 1,555 personal fouls this season, seventh-fewest in the NBA. The Lakers were called for 1,517, third least, but were not close to consistently disturbing offenses the way the Thunder did in the regular season and in their first-round sweep of the Phoenix Suns. It is an area, particularly on Gilgeous-Alexander, where the Lakers need to be excellent.

“Just being the more physical team,” LaRavia said. “Again, it kind of starts with Shai. We’ve got to do a good job of making everything uncomfortable for him. He’s a very talented player, can score in, you know, a multitude of ways. So, we just got to do a good job of being physical with him and trying to make him take enough, as many tough shots as we can.”

And if he lives on the line?

“If they call fouls, they’re going to call fouls, but we’ve got to go out there and be the more physical team,” LaRavia said. “So, if that’s how this series is going to be where they’re just going to call a bunch of fouls, I think we’re going to have to live with that.”

The road will be steeper without Luka Doncic, who was the only player not available at practice on Sunday. The team gave no update on his status. But even without Doncic, the Lakers say they have a chance.

“They won it all last year, and you know they’ve been the best team in basketball all this year. So it’s obviously going to

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. “... [I]t kind of starts with Shai,” Los Angeles Lakers forward Jake LaRavia said of his team’s need to excel on defense against the NBA’s premier defenders. “We’ve got to do a good job of making everything uncomfortable for him.” (Instagram via shai)

be a big challenge,” Reaves said. “You know you can’t go in scared. You have an opportunity to go play basketball. So we’ll have fun.”

The Lakers are even heavier underdogs against the Thunder than they were against the Houston Rockets. That series produced an outcome that surprised most predictors.

“You could say nobody thought we were going to get past Houston, but everybody in this building believed,” Reaves said. “It’s the same mindset going into this. We obviously know the team that we’re about to face and how good they are and the problems that they can create for 48 minutes. So we’ll have to lock in every single day, film, whatever it could be, to continue to get better and pay attention to all the little details like they do.”

For the Lakers, that starts with recognizing what they are facing without giving in to the size of the challenge.

“When you’re coming into any game, regular season or playoff … you can respect the team, but you can’t fear them,” LaRavia said. “You can’t come into the game fearing the opponent and then, you know, you’re just going to come in and get punked. So we respect how good this team is, but, our goal is to win, win the games and win the series.

“So our mindset stays the same when it comes to that.”
