ealth Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero warned on Tuesday that Puerto Rico is in its fourth consecutive week above the influenza epidemic threshold and reiterated the call for vaccination and to reinforce preventive measures in light of upcoming large-scale events. “This sustained behavior above the epidemiological thresholds confirms that the virus is circulating widely in the community,” Ramos Otero said in a written statement. “We reiterate the urgent call for vaccination and to reinforce preventive measures, especially given the upcoming large-scale events such as the San Sebastián Street Festival and concerts,” he added. During the epidemiological week from Dec. 28, 2025, to Jan. 3, 3,200 new cases of influenza were reported, bringing the cumulative total for the 2025-2026 season to 35,669. Fortyeight percent of the cases were identified in individuals under 19 years of age. The Health Department reported that to date, 96 deaths associated with influenza have been confirmed during the season, while four remain under investigation. Seventy-five percent of the deaths occurred in people over 70 years of age, and 96.9 percent had no record of vaccination. Regarding immunization, as of Tuesday 13, 340,719 doses of the influenza vaccine had been administered. The agency indicated that the vaccine continues to be available at health centers,

Public Housing Administration launches mandatory home visits for families with children and/or seniors By THE STAR STAFF

Rosario Hernández announced Tuesday the implementation of mandatory visits to inspect apartments in Puerto Rico’s 328 public housing complexes where minors or elderly individuals reside. “The priority of the Public Housing Administration [AVP by its initials in Spanish] is to ensure that every resident lives in a safe and healthy environment,” the official said. “This week, we instructed the 16 managing agents to immediately begin working on a plan to visit units that include minors or older adults in their household composition. We want to make sure our people enjoy an excellent quality of life, as Governor Jenniffer González Colón has reiterated.” Rosario Hernández noted that each visit must be documented using a standardized form to track actions taken

and coordinate any necessary follow-up. “Each managing agent is responsible for making every effort to carry out the visit plan,” the AVP administrator said. “If necessary, visits may be scheduled on weekends if the tenant is unavailable during the week due to work commitments or other priorities.” According to the AVP’s directive, managing agents must complete some 56,000 visits by March 6. he Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services Administration (ASSMCA by its initials in Spanish) announced Tuesday that it has strengthened its Naloxone Saturation Plan as a precautionary measure against potential opioid overdoses during the upcoming San Sebastián Street Festival. “Given the reality of fentanyl and the increase in overdoses in multiple jurisdictions, it is essential that Puerto Rico continues to move forward with responsible, humane, and prevention-focused measures,” ASSMCA Administrator Catherine Oliver Franco said in a written statement. “Initiatives like this strengthen community response capacity and allow us to save lives while enjoying our traditions safely.” As part of the plan, agency personnel will train merchants in Old San Juan and Cataño on the use and administration of intranasal naloxone. The initiative is funded through federal

projects and aims to expand harm reduction strategies during large public gatherings. According to data from the Naloxone Overdose and Use Monitoring System, ASSMCA intensified its prevention efforts anticipating a higher risk of overdoses during the festival, which begins this Thursday. “Anyone can be exposed to an overdose, whether accidentally or through substance use, and illicit fentanyl is present in illegally obtained substances,” Oliver Franco warned. The program is expected to reach more than 30 businesses and is designed to provide an initial response while awaiting emergency medical assistance. Oliver Franco emphasized that the initiative does not replace emergency services but rather complements them. She also reminded the public that Law 35 of 2021 protects individuals who suffer an overdose and those who intervene in good faith using naloxone. Between June 2019 and December

2025, Puerto Rico reported 6,174 overdose events, 98% of which were non-fatal thanks to timely interventions.

Erich von Däniken, who claimed aliens visited Earth, dies at 90 By MIKE PEED

rich von Däniken, the bestselling Swiss author and self-styled maverick archaeologist who propagated the theory that thousands of years ago an advanced alien species visited Earth, mated with ancient humans and gave them the technology, and the intelligence, to erect such marvels as the Great Pyramids, died Saturday in Switzerland. He was 90. His death was announced on his website. Von Däniken was 32 and managing a hotel in Davos, Switzerland, when he published his first and by far most popular book, “Chariots of the Gods,” in 1968. In breathless prose, saturated with exclamation points and folksy interjections such as “Hey, presto!” von Däniken posited that virtually the sum of human knowledge and ability had been bestowed by extraterrestrials. With little evidence and a lot of innuendo, he proclaimed that the Egyptian pyramids could have been built only with alien expertise. (“Is it really a coincidence that the height of the pyramid of Cheops multiplied by a thousand million — 98,000,000 miles — corresponds approximately to the distance between the earth and sun?” he wrote.) The birdman cult of Easter Island, von Däniken declared, developed as a way to honor the supreme beings who had flitted down from the outer atmosphere to land on that remote spot in the Pacific, off the coast of South America. Because an iron rod in a temple in Delhi, India, appeared impervious to rust, it must have been made from a celestial alloy, he insisted. Similarly, he said, when viewed from the air, the geoglyphs of Nazca, Peru, are obvious landing strips for spaceships. And artwork on a Mayan sarcophagus depicts not a king descending into the underworld, he concluded, but an astronautgod piloting a spaceship. Critics were unsparing. “Chariots of the Gods,” one anthropologist wrote, was “a warped parody of reasoning, argumentation, as well as a vigorous exercise in selective quotation, misrepresentation and error based on ignorance.” Astrophysicist Carl Sagan said of von Däniken: “Every time he sees something he can’t understand, he attributes it to extrate-

(Adam Amengual/The New York Times) rrestrial intelligence, and since he understands almost nothing, he sees evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence all over the planet.” And The New York Times said that von Däniken’s prose, which it categorized as “Early Terrible,” was such a “mixmaster of facts, speculations, rhetorical questions” that reading it left one’s mind “the consistency of a rich Swiss fondue.” But for a certain kind of reader — and, to scientists’ alarm, there were many of them — von Däniken’s theories registered not only intellectually but also spiritually, constituting something like the catechism of an enlightened new faith. “Chariots,” which begins, “It took courage to write this book, and it will take courage to read it,” positioned itself squarely against the establishment, scientific or otherwise — not a hard sell in 1968. By incorporating into his argument ancient texts such as “The Mahabharata” and “The Epic of Gilgamesh” and a literal yet novel interpretation of the Bible — Ezekiel saw not fiery wheels in the sky but alien spacecraft — von Däniken appeared to unite the world’s religions, its foundational mythologies and its scientific understandings in a

way that seduced both the questioning and the faithful. And he did so just as the Space Age was proposing that a we-are-exceptionalin-the-universe point of view was embarrassingly naive. Within a few years, “Chariots” had sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and von Däniken’s flock had transformed him into a prophet of the New Age. In 1973, NBC aired a documentary based on von Däniken’s theories, and more than a quarter-million copies of “Chariots” sold in two days. (An earlier documentary on “Chariots” had not moved product at the same pace but had been nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary feature; it lost to a film on the Woodstock music festival.) Braniff Airways began offering, for about $8,000, 15-day pilgrimages to South America, allowing devotees to pay respects at some of the sites that von Däniken had brandished as evidence. Over the next half century, he published over 40 more books, which were translated into some 30 languages, and though none of them offered much variation from his original themes or ideas — subsequent titles included “Gods From Outer Space,” “The Gods Were Astronauts” and “Arrival of the Gods” — they collectively sold more than 70 million copies. His energy seemed without limit. At one point, von Däniken was traveling 100,000 miles a year, surveying archaeological sites across the globe and lecturing in thickly accented English to like-minded brethren. If the “ancient astronaut” theory has never been accepted into mainstream scientific circles, it long ago implanted itself into popular culture. In the mid-1970s, Marvel began a series of comic books, “The Eternals,” in which “alien celestials” pay a call to Earth and forge a race of superhumans. (The series was made into a movie in 2021.) Ridley Scott incorporated ancient aliens into his 2012 film, “Prometheus.” The most famous maverick archaeologist ever, Indiana Jones, finds the answer to one vexing riddle in Peruvian geoglyphs: “From the ground, they don’t look like anything. But from the sky, only the gods can read them,” he says in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008). Erich von Däniken was born April 14,

1935, in the town of Zofingen, in northern Switzerland. His father, Otto von Däniken Sr., was a tailor who owned a small clothing factory, and his mother, Magdalena Weiss, helped run the restaurant her family owned. When Erich was 17, his father pulled him out of the Collège Saint-Michel, a Jesuit secondary school in Fribourg, Switzerland, and apprenticed him to a Swiss hotelier. Erich never returned to school of any kind, but the biblical passages that the Jesuits forced him to translate from Latin and Greek into German propelled him to a larger examination of the world’s religions and mythologies. That deities across cultures so often revealed themselves to humans from the sky, he said, led him to formulate his astronaut-god theory. (He later acknowledged that others had proposed similar theories first.) He wrote the manuscript for what became “Chariots of the Gods” while managing the Hotel Rosenhügel in Davos. At the hotel’s bar one day, he met the editor of a Swiss science magazine, who introduced von Däniken to an executive at EconVerlag, a Swiss publishing house. EconVerlag agreed to print 6,000 copies of what was originally titled “Erinnerungen an die Zukunft,” or “Memories of the Future,” but only after hiring Wilhelm Roggersdorf, who had edited the Nazi newspaper Völkischer Beobachter, to rework much of it. By December 1968, the book was a bestseller in Germany. An English translation appeared the next year. Von Däniken wrote his second book from prison. In 1970, a Swiss court convicted him of fraud, forgery and embezzlement, determining that, as a hotel manager, he had falsified financial records to subsidize what the court called a “playboy” lifestyle. He served about a third of a 3 1/2-year sentence. Critics pointed to von Däniken’s criminal history as proof of a penchant for deception. But von Däniken seemed unfazed, even comparing himself to Jesus. “People don’t ask if Christ was convicted of a crime,” he told Playboy in 1974. “What has that to do with the message Christ brought?” Von Däniken married Elisabeth Skaja, a homemaker, in 1960. They had two children, a son, Peter, who was born in 1960 and died two years later, and a daughter, Cornelia. Survivors include von Däniken’s wife, his daughter and two grandchildren.

Inflation may keep Fed on hold until after Powell’s chair term ends

nflation may not subside ‌quickly enough for Federal ‌Reserve Chair Jerome Powell to deliver another interest-rate cut before his term ends in May, with the Bureau of ‍Labor Statistics reporting consumer prices rose 2.7% in December from a year earlier, in line ⁠with economists’ expectations and well above the Fed’s target. Traders see a June cut, after Powell is no longer chair, as the most likely timing, and continue to expect a total of ‌two rate cuts this year. Even so, interest-rate futures now reflect about ‌a 40% chance ‍of ⁠an April cut, up from 38% earlier. The report showed underlying consumer prices, excluding food and energy, rose a slightly less than expected 2.6%. “A disinflationary trend is gradually taking shape,” said Seema Shah, chief global strategist at Principal Asset Management. “As tariff pass-through effects become clearer and inflation concerns ease, the Fed is likely to shift towards a stance where one or two more cuts can be justified.” The data comes on the heels of an unprecedented move by the Trump administration to subpoena Powell in what the Fed chief said was a threat to the central bank’s ability to set interest rates based on its assessment of what the economy needs rather than what the president wants. Trump also declared that he had canceled meetings with Iranian officials. “Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING — TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!!,” Trump wrote. “Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!!” Trump has threatened to intervene militarily in Iran on behalf of the protesters if authorities use lethal force against them. On Tuesday morning, several Iranians living abroad said they had received calls from family members inside Iran who were using landlines. President Trump is exploring options for diplomacy with Iran as he weighs whether to attack the country to try to deter its leaders from killing more protesters, U.S. officials said. (Eric Lee/The New York Times) Tuesday, a person inside Iran said that protesters in the capital, Tehran, became hesitant to go out starting Friday, when the government began sending text messages warning that they were at risk of being killed if they did. The callers described how the crackdown kept many confined to their homes, with some venturing out only to run errands or shop for groceries during the day. Several callers said they knew people who had been killed in the protests, according to the relatives abroad who spoke to them. Once the calls were over, the relatives said, they were unable to call back. “I just shed tears after the call,” said Soudabeh, in Britain. “My sister’s voice was strong and resolute. My mother sounded anguished.” All those who spoke to the Times requested that only their first names be used or that they remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. The latest internet cutoff in Iran has been one of the most severe national disruptions in the world, said Alp Toker, the founder of British internet watchdog NetBlocks. Iran has shut down the internet during anti-government protests before, including during a widespread uprising for women’s freedom in 2022. But while those shutdowns were gradual, the latest one was imposed nationwide, and swiftly. “We saw that the process has been fully automated into an actual kill switch that enables the authority to cut off the entire nation, which is extraordinary,” Toker said.

Digital rights experts cautioned Tuesday that while the restoration could help family members reconnect, it might create new risks by enabling authorities to monitor citizens and track their activities. “There is now a much bigger risk associated with using those landlines, because they aren’t secured and they aren’t encrypted,” Toker said, “and indeed, that’s quite possibly why that service has been selectively enabled.” Authorities have also been jamming satellite services, he said, particularly Starlink terminals. But the jamming isn’t total, he said, and some communication is still possible. Starlink is operated by SpaceX, which Elon Musk owns. Trump said Sunday that he planned to enlist Musk’s help to bypass Iran’s internet shutdown and restore connectivity. Iranian officials including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader, have continued to post updates on social media throughout the shutdown, including on X and Telegram. Authorities said they had shut down the internet after concluding that protesters were being guided from abroad to create chaos within the country. On Tuesday, Fatemeh Mohajerani, a spokesperson for the government, said auInstitution thorities had not decided when they would restore inKashable LLC ternet access.

The internet and communication blackout has limited the flow of news from Iran and hampered efforts by rights groups to track casualties. The Iran Human Rights group, in Oslo, Norway, has said that nearly 700 protesters have been killed, while HRANA, a rights organization in Washington, said it had confirmed the deaths of more than 500 protesters and more than 130 members of the security forces. Multiple U.S. officials said that U.S. intelligence agencies have conservatively estimated that more than 600 protesters have been killed so far. The agencies have noted that both the current protests and the crackdown are far more violent than those in 2022 or other recent uprisings against the government. A senior Iranian Health Ministry official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that roughly 3,000 people had died across the country, attributing the violence to “terrorists” stirring unrest. The total, he said, included hundreds of security personnel. Another government official said he had seen an internal report citing at least 3,000 deaths and cautioned that the number could rise further. The crackdown could have global repercussions. While exploring diplomatic options with Tehran, the Trump administration is simultaneously considering a range of measures, including possible military strikes, to try to prevent further killings of protesters. European leaders have also begun to respond. France and Italy summoned the Iranian ambassadors in their countries Tuesday over the protests. Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, posted on social media Tuesday that the European Union would work toward imposing more economic penalties on Iran. “Further sanctions on those responsible for the repression will be swiftly proposed,” she wrote. “We stand with the people of Iran who are bravely marching for their liberty.”

Hints of political amnesty stoke hope and frustration in Venezuela By ANATOLY KURMANAEV

hen Venezuela’s interim government announced last week that it would start freeing political prisoners, Ramón Guanipa Linares, a college psychology student, immediately packed a bag and flew from his hometown in western Venezuela to the capital, Caracas. On arrival, he went straight to a prison where his father, Juan Pablo Guanipa, a prominent opposition politician, has been detained for the past eight months for challenging President Nicolás Maduro’s rule. “I wanted to be the first to hug my father,” Guanipa Linares, 28, said in a phone interview from his home in Maracaibo, Venezuela’s second-largest city. “But they had no information about his liberation or anything like that. They were just rumors.” Guanipa Linares, like most Venezuelans, has been trying to understand his country’s political course since the U.S. captured Maduro and helped install his vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, as the country’s interim leader. Her unexpected alliance with the United States has raised cautious hopes that Venezuela could become less repressive, if not democratic. On Thursday, Rodriguez’s brother, Jorge Rodríguez, a top Venezuelan official, announced that the government would be freeing an “important number” of political prisoners. President Donald Trump raised expectations further Saturday, announcing on social media that “Venezuela has started the process, in a BIG WAY, of releasing their political prisoners.” But the slow pace of the ensuing liberations has raised questions in Venezuela over Delcy Rodríguez’s ultimate intentions as well as her ability to impose her will on the more extreme factions of her government that control the various security agencies and their prisons.

On Monday morning, Venezuela’s government announced that it had released 116 prisoners “in recent hours.” But rights groups that monitor political prisoners in the country have counted only 41 releases since Maduro’s downfall. About 800 political prisoners remained behind bars as of Sunday, according to a count by Foro Penal, one of the rights groups. On Sunday night, relatives of political prisoners held a night vigil outside the secret police’s notorious El Helicoide prison in Caracas, a move that underscored both the growing impatience with the government’s foot-dragging and a cautious sense of hope. During the final years of Maduro’s rule, security forces would have dispersed such a protest within minutes. Guanipa Linares has since returned home, where he has been trying to make sense of his country’s new power dynamics. “From what we understand, there was a plan to free all these political prisoners, but something has happened midway,” he said. “So we are just trying to raise our voices and maintain the pressure.” His father is arguably the most prominent politician who remains in detention in Venezuela. A former congressman from a centrist opposition party, he ran successfully for governor of Venezuela’s oil-rich Zulia state in 2017. But Maduro’s government dismissed him from office for refusing to swear allegiance to a legislative body that the president had created, in violation of Venezuelan law, to bypass the opposition-controlled congress. In 2023, Guanipa ran to be the presidential candidate for the main opposition alliance for the election to be held the following year. After coming second in the primary, he threw his support behind the winning candidate, Maria Corina Machado, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2025 for her pro-democracy campaign. The opposition alliance won those presidential elections in a landslide, voting machine tallies show, but was prevented from taking power by Maduro, who declared himself the winner and then unleashed a new wave of repression against opponents. Guanipa and Machado were among the few prominent opposition leaders who chose to remain in Venezuela as repression deepened. Fed changes course and takes on Trump’s political fight By COLBY SMITH

erome Powell wanted to avoid a fight. That had long been his approach to handling President Donald Trump and his relentless attacks on the Federal Reserve, which in his second term had taken on heightened intensity. Between an executive order wresting more control over the Fed’s oversight of Wall Street to Trump’s attempt to oust a sitting member of the policy-setting board of governors, the Fed had stuck to a time-tested strategy: Avoid provoking the president. At times, that meant bending to meet his demands in areas like climate change and bank regulation. But Powell, the Fed chair, drew the line when it came to protecting the central bank’s autonomy to set interest rates. A criminal investigation into whether Powell lied to Congress, revealed by The New York Times on Sunday, has prompted the central bank to jettison its cautious approach and fight. The battle’s outcome could determine whether the Fed remains an independent entity. “Trump is now exercising the nuclear option, so there is no longer a reason for Powell not to speak his mind,” said Maurice Obstfeld, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, who was formerly the chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. Powell’s decision to push back, which came in a rare video message Sunday evening, tees up the most challenging moment in his roughly eight years at the helm of the central bank. Powell, whose term as chair ends in May, must now decide how hard to continue fighting and whether to remain in his role as a governor, a term that is set to expire in 2028. A ‘new threat’ Powell and staff members at the Fed worked through the weekend after the Justice Department served the central bank with grand jury subpoenas late Friday. What culminated was a two-minute video released Sunday evening featuring Powell bluntly calling out the administration for seeking to leverage a criminal investigation into costs related to the Fed’s renovation of its headquarters as “pretexts” to coerce the central bank into lowering borrowing costs. “This new threat is not about my testimony last June or about the renovation of the Federal Reserve buildings,” Powell said Sunday. “The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president.” The Fed has cut interest rates only gradually, reducing them by 0.75 percentage points since September to a new range of 3.5% to 3.75%. Trump has demanded rates as low as 1%, calling Powell a “numbskull” and a “stubborn mule” for refusing to concede. Friday’s subpoenas relate to renovations that have been taking place since 2022 at the Fed’s headquarters in Washington. The sprawling project, which is set to be completed in 2027, is $700 million over budget and is expected to cost roughly $2.5 billion. Trump seized on the renovations as a new line of at-

tack against the central bank this summer, accusing Powell of mismanagement and taking the rare step of showing up at the construction site for a tour. Legal experts saw it as the potential groundwork to try to remove the Fed chair for “cause,” the only justification a president can use to lawfully fire an official at the central bank. Cause has typically meant gross malfeasance or a dereliction of duty while in office, although it has never been tested. Powell’s decision to respond directly by video reflected the explosive nature of the Justice Department’s move. Never before has a Fed chair faced a criminal investigation. It also represented a stark departure from the administration’s attacks on Powell to date, which had typically taken the form of personal insults from Trump. The president, who nominated Powell to the job during his first term, had also threatened to fire the Fed’s chair, but had not acted on it. Still, Powell had preemptively retained outside counsel, hiring Williams & Connolly, a top litigation firm in Washington. Trump instead tried to oust Lisa Cook, whom the Biden administration had appointed to the Fed. The president, citing allegations of mortgage fraud, said he had cause to remove her. Arguments for the case will be heard by the Supreme Court on Jan. 21. Powell, a lawyer by training, and close advisers saw the Justice Department’s investigation as a sharp escalation in the administration’s affront against the institution that required a forceful response. Trump denied having knowledge of the U.S. attorney’s investigation, saying Sunday that he did not “know anything about it, but he’s certainly not very good at the Fed, and he’s not very good at building buildings,” referring to Powell.

In the past, Powell had demurred from commenting directly on the president’s attacks. Instead, he spoke in favor of the importance of the Fed maintaining its long-standing independence, a protection Congress granted the central bank so that officials set rates with an aim to attain low, stable inflation and a healthy labor market, rather than to the benefit of whomever is in the White House. But that changed Sunday. Independence imperiled? The guardrails protecting the Fed’s independence were crafted by Congress to avoid a president having undue influence over major policy decisions that have significant sway over the trajectory of the economy. One of the foremost protections revolves around the seven members of the powerful board of governors. Those officials are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate, but they cannot be fired at will. They also serve staggered 14-year terms. Rate decisions are voted on by a 12-person committee made up of the members the board, the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and a rotating set of four presidents from the 12 regional banks. If Powell opts to stay on as a governor — something he has declined to publicly comment on — that would deny Trump the opportunity to appoint another member to the board. “It’s harder for him to go now,” Scott Alvarez, the Fed’s former general counsel, said of Powell. “If he goes now, it’s under a cloud. If they hadn’t done anything, he might have just left.” The president gained an unexpected vacancy in August when Adriana Kugler abruptly stepped down as governor after repeatedly violating the central bank’s trading rules. He tapped for the job one of his top economic advisers, Stephen Miran, who took only a temporary leave of absence from the White House. Trump is also in the final stages of selecting Powell’s replacement for chair. Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House National Economic Council, is a top contender. In a sign that the investigation could have an impact on the Senate confirmation process, Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., a member of the Banking Committee, on Sunday vowed to oppose any nominee for the Fed, including any coming chair vacancy, citing reports of subpoenas. The investigation will also have broad implications for Cook’s case. The Supreme Court will be ruling on how much latitude a president has to remove a Fed official and the extent to which they can define what constitutes cause. “I hope the Supreme Court is watching, because it would eviscerate the independence of the Federal Reserve if the president could remove somebody on an allegation rather than on a finding of some criminal behavior,” Alvarez said. “The fact that the DOJ has alleged this doesn’t make it true.” Kathryn Judge, a professor at Columbia Law School, added that “the Federal Reserve will not remain independent if the president feels entitled to use every tool at his disposal to harass and intimidate Fed officials.”

Penguins become prey for the pumas of Patagonia By ALEXA ROBLES-GIL

enguins throughout the southern seas have to worry about being picked off by seals or hunted by orcas. On land, they can find safety in numbers. But in the Patagonia region of Argentina, the flightless seabirds are becoming snacks for an unexpected land predator: pumas. New research, published last month in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, offers “a beautiful blend of animal movement and ‘who eats what,’” said Jake Goheen, a wildlife ecologist at Iowa State University who was not involved in the research. He noted that pumas usually prefer to prey on grazing mammals, not birds as small as Magellanic penguins. “It’s an extraordinary example of how flexible large carnivores can be,” Goheen said. In the early 20th century, widespread sheep ranching vanquished pumas from Patagonia. With those predators gone, Magellanic penguins, which had mostly lived on oceanic islands, established large breeding colonies on Argentina’s coast. Conservation efforts have brought pumas back to the landscape, setting the stage for new interactions between these animals. Mitchell Serota, an ecologist and lead author of the study, was interested in how Magellanic penguins, as a new food source, were reshaping the movement patterns of pumas across the landscape. He was also curious about how pumas interacted with each other, and their population density. To understand the behavioral changes, Serota, who completed the research at the University of California, Berkeley, and some of his colleagues put GPS collars on 14 pumas

They collected information from 2019-23. Because penguins are migratory animals and are present at the breeding colony in the park for just over half the year, the scientists tracked how the pumas moved and interacted across seasons. They found that the behavior of the pumas changed as they spent more time near the penguin colony. Pumas that hunted penguins had smaller territories than pumas that did not, and the big cats interacted with each other more frequently around the colony. Briana Abrahms, a wildlife ecologist at the University of Washington who was not involved in the research, was familiar with puma attacks on penguins. She had studied a penguin colony north of Monte León and thought attacks were relatively rare. “What surprised me initially, although I think it makes complete sense, is just how much predation is happening on these pen-

guins,” she said, “and how much the pumas have adapted to this new food source.” After integrating GPS tracking with camera trap data, scientists also found what might be the highest density of pumas ever documented at a specific site, Serota said. Although pumas are typically solitary creatures, their population density in this area was roughly double that observed elsewhere, leading to increased interactions among the felines. Serota likened their presence to that of grizzly bears tolerating each other during the salmon run. “Penguins appear to be doing something similar for pumas,” he said. “Food can bring predators together.” Changes to ecosystems can affect when, where and how predators obtain their food, leading to broader ecological effects. For pumas in the region, which typically feed on guanacos, a llamalike herbivore, those ecological effects are still unknown.

“Because pumas and guanacos form the dominant predator-prey relationship in the region, changes in how pumas move and hunt can have these massive ripple effects,” Serota said. Defenseless penguins, an easy catch for pumas, might even find themselves part of this chain reaction. “Will we see a situation in the future where the penguins go back to living mostly on oceanic islands?” Goheen said. For Serota, the study showed that a new predator-prey relationship like that between pumas and penguins transforms the ecosystem. “Restoring wildlife in today’s changed landscapes doesn’t simply rewind ecosystems to the past,” Serota said. “It can create these entirely new interactions that reshape animal behavior and populations in really unexpected ways.” A common assumption in scientific literature is that reintroducing large carnivores to ecosystems can revert an ecosystem to what it once was. But over the period of time that carnivores were absent, other things have changed, too. “You’re putting carnivores back into an ecosystem that doesn’t necessarily resemble the one from which they went locally extinct,” Goheen said. The animals find new situations to contend with. “As scientists, we should get comfortable with that,” he said, “and not sell to the general public that, Hey, if we restore carnivores, they’re going to have all these other kind of chain-reaction type benefits for everything else in the ecosystem.” He added: “We should restore carnivores because they deserve to be there and because we’re the ones that eradicated them to begin with.”

How to make döner kebab like a Cypriot mom By KORSHA WILSON

t’s an old tale: A boyfriend visits his girlfriend’s parents’ house for the first time and nerves ensue. But in Michael Wilkes’ case, he arrived in Cyprus to not only a warm reception, but also a traditional Cypriot mezze: yogurty cacik, vibrant green parsley, warm pita, olives picked from a nearby tree. “It was so fresh and beautiful,” he said. The spread wasn’t complete. Nefise Kansu, his girlfriend’s mother, was making döner, a kebab of marinated ground lamb or beef. Its origins are disputed, but döner has a long history, stretching as far back as the Ottoman Empire, and now found across the Middle East and beloved around the world. Translated from Turkish as “turning” or “revolving,” döner is roasted on a large rotating skewer, becoming a deep brown, until ordered. The prized crispy outer layer is sliced off, revealing a fresh layer that then crisps until the next order. Wilkes was most familiar with them from late-night shops in London, where he lives now, and from Manchester, where he grew up. But Kansu’s version looked quite different: For one, obviously, there was no skewer. Instead, she spread a blended mixture of meat and onion onto sheets of parchment paper and rolled them into long cylinders on a well-worn baking sheet. “I remember thinking, ‘What are we doing here with this brown paste?’” he said. After the rolls were cooked, broken up and tucked into and topped in a warm pita, Wilkes understood. Kansu’s technique was mimicking the spit’s gentle browning, cooking it while maintaining its moisture. It was a recipe she had made in her own kitchen for 10 years or so and had seen in her community for even longer. “I loved it,” Wilkes said. “I even sent pictures back home to my family.” When Wilkes decided to start chronicling his favorite recipes on his TikTok, @MezeMike, he and his girlfriend, Defne, took another trip to Cyprus to document some of Kansu’s older recipes. She was shy at first, not wanting to be on camera, but eventually got comfortable. “I was honestly quite surprised that he was so interested, because, here, it’s not so common for men to be involved in cooking at home,” she said through a translator. “But I really liked him and was glad he enjoyed the food.” Wilkes posted regularly on his account, gaining a dozen, maybe a few dozen views, but it was Kansu’s döner that would prove to be his most popular video, garnering thousands of views in its first hour. The recipe has been viewed more than 8.6 million times on TikTok alone, and prompted many videos of people remaking the recipe. “I think it’s the uniqueness and novelty of it that made it viral,” he said, adding that it didn’t hurt that it was an easy way of making a restaurant dish at home. For Kansu, the appeal is much simpler. “Döner,” she said, “is something that’s universally loved.”

The comments haven’t all been positive. Some viewers have said the method doesn’t produce traditional döner, but Wilkes and Kansu have taken it in stride. “It’s all according to people’s taste buds, and we just take the negative comments and turn them into positive ones,” she said. Wilkes recently proposed to Defne, and, soon, Kansu will go from girlfriend’s mother to mother-in-law. The couple held a traditional Cypriot proposal at the family’s home and have begun planning their wedding in Cyprus. But the döner that made them all internet-famous won’t be on the menu. “I don’t want us to be in the kitchen that day,” Kansu said.

The thinness of the meat mixture is key here, so take your time rolling it out between the sheets so the meat crisps evenly while baking. Many hands also make this recipe feel like a party, so invite guests to join in, rolling sheets and helping to break them up after baking. Total time: 50 minutes Ingredients: 2 medium onions, cut into large dice 1/4 cup olive oil 2 pounds ground lamb or 85% to 90% ground beef Heaping 1/2 cup plain full-fat Greek yogurt, plus 1/2 cup for the sauce 1 1/2 tablespoons smoked paprika 1 1/2 tablespoons dried oregano 1 1/2 tablespoons ground cumin 1 1/2 tablespoons garlic powder 1 tablespoon crushed red pepper (preferably Aleppo pepper), or less to taste 1 tablespoon kosher salt (such as Diamond Crystal) 1 tablespoon black pepper Lemon wedges, for squeezing Pita bread, sliced tomato, lettuce and thinly sliced onions, for serving Preparation: 1. Heat the oven to 400 degrees. 2. In a food processor, blend onions with olive oil until a paste forms. Transfer to a large bowl. 3. To the bowl, add lamb, yogurt, spices, salt and pepper. Using clean hands, mix everything until the mixture is evenly brown with no visible pockets of spices or onions. 4. Place a 12-by-16-inch sheet of parchment paper on a clean counter or cutting board. Top the sheet with a heaping handful of the mixture and lay another sheet of parchment on top. Using a rolling pin, roll the mixture between the two sheets so it’s about 1/4-inch thick. 5. Working from the longest side, begin rolling parchment onto itself like a cinnamon roll. If some of the mixture spills out the ends, it’s OK — just tuck it back in as best as you can. Place the roll onto a rimmed sheet pan. 6. Repeat the previous two steps with the remaining lamb mixture, laying the rolled parchments next to one another on the sheet pan. (You should have about four rolls.) 7. Bake until the parchment rolls have released their fat onto the sheet pan, about 20 minutes, and remove from oven. Pour any drippings into a small bowl. Return pan to oven and bake for 15 minutes more, until the parchment begins turning a dark brown. Let cool on the pan. 8. Once the rolls are cool enough to handle, carefully unroll them: Hold one side of the parchment and lift slightly so the cooked lamb mixture falls out naturally onto the sheet pan. Repeat with all the rolls. They should naturally break into pieces, but if they don’t, you can use kitchen shears to create strips, about 3 inches long for easier pita building. Squeeze a little lemon juice over the cooked meat. 9. To serve, add the remaining 1/2 cup yogurt to the reserved drippings and stir. Taste and adjust with more salt and pepper if desired. 10. Serve cooked lamb immediately with pita, tomato, lettuce, onions and yogurt sauce. Leftovers can be wrapped and kept refrigerated for a few days.

A three-run home run by Nelson Velázquez -- coming after Ponce starter Bryant Salgado walked Rubén Castro and Yohandy Morales -- gave the Crabbers (Cangrejeros) a 4-1 lead in the third inning, but the Lions (Leones), powered by a pair of homers in the sixth and ninth innings, rallied to tie the score at 4-4. Ponce’s first round-tripper came off the bat of Edwin Díaz with the bases empty, making the score 4-2 in the top of the sixth. The second,

Game 2 was slated for Tuesday night at Hiram Bithorn. The best-of seven series moves to Francisco “Paquito” Montaner Stadium in Ponce for Game 3 on Thursday at 7 p.m.

he Men’s Superior Volleyball League announced its 2025 All-Star Team on Tuesday, chosen through voting by the media and authorized representatives of the participating teams. This year’s voting reflected strong support for several of the season’s most outstanding players, including Pelegrín Vargas Jr. of the Caribes of San Sebastián and Spencer Olivier of the Plataneros of Corozal, both receiving more than 20 votes for the outside hitter positions. Their offensive consistency, leadership and presence in key moments made them undisputed favorites. In the middle blocker position, Nick West of the Patriotas of Lares was the leading vote-getter with 18, reflecting his dominance at the net and his impact on both sides of the game. Bettor in gambling inquiry says messages were about roosters, not baseball By SANTUL NERKAR

or more than two years, one of Major League Baseball’s most feared pitchers would alert sports bettors to his strategy on the mound, allowing them to illicitly rake in hundreds of thousands of dollars with the inside information, according to federal prosecutors. But in court documents made public Friday, one of the people who bet on Emmanuel Clase’s pitches made an unusual claim. He said he had talked about rooster fighting, not baseball, with Clase. Clase, a reliever for the Cleveland Guardians, ran a well-known rooster-fighting operation in the Dominican Republic, where the practice is legal, and their conversations centered around gambling on those fights, rather than on baseball, said the bettor, who was not named in the court documents. The statement was included in a joint legal filing made by lawyers representing Clase and Luis Ortiz, another Guardians pitcher who was indicted in November in the gambling scheme. In the indictment, prosecutors seemed to interpret messages about roosters and horses as coded messages about gambling on baseball, the defense lawyers wrote. It is in the players’ interest to come up with an alternative explanation for the messages and transactions that prosecutors say are incriminating and betrayed baseball. The man, a self-professed “big sports fan,” gambled on Clase’s pitches, he said, because he recognized his tendencies as a pitcher, including the fact that Clase threw only two pitches, a cut fastball and a slider. But he said he had not discussed the pitches with Clase. The bettor’s statement suggests how both players might defend themselves at a trial, scheduled for May, in a federal case that is one of several that have rocked the world of professional sports in recent months and have heightened concerns about leagues’ ties to gambling companies. Clase is “a well-publicized breeder and participant in rooster fighting activities,” their lawyers wrote, and both players are “horse enthusiasts” who care for horses and other livestock in the Dominican Republic. In October, federal prosecutors in Brooklyn brought charges against more than 30 defendants in two criminal cases, including an NBA insider-trading scheme in which sports bettors are accused of using nonpublic information about the availability of players to make wagers on player and team underperformance. Clase and Ortiz’s case has also shed light on the world of prop bets and microbets, which have emerged as a core business for gambling companies. In contrast to bets on the outcome of a game, prop bets are based on an event or a player performance not directly tied to the game’s outcome. Microbets are prop bets whose outcome can be resolved in seconds, like bets on pitches. A spokesperson for the U.S. attorney’s office in the Eastern District of New York declined to comment. Lawyers for Clase and Ortiz did not immediately respond to a

request for comment. Clase, according to federal prosecutors, started working with bettors in May 2023 to fix certain pitches in forthcoming games. Ortiz joined the scheme in 2025, prosecutors said, and together, bettors made around $450,000 from betting on their pitches. Prosecutors pointed to messages exchanged between the pitchers and individual gamblers as evidence of that coordination. In one such example, from April 12, 2025, after Clase informed the bettors of a forthcoming pitch, they won $15,000 by wagering that it would be a ball thrown slower than 98.5 mph. The next day, Clase texted the unnamed bettor and asked whether the bettor had been able to “wager anything,” according to prosecutors. After the bettor responded affirmatively, Clase told the bettor to “send some of it to the DR,” or the Dominican Republic. Yet the money the bettor sent back to the Dominican Republic, he said, was intended for people who ran Clase’s rooster operation. The bettor, a citizen of the Dominican Republic who now lives in Boston, has known Clase since 2023, according to the affidavit. He also wrote about being a prolific gambler who used ChatGPT to inform wagers. Rooster fighting is illegal in the United States, but it remains wildly popular in the Dominican Republic. In 2008, the Hall of Fame pitcher Pedro Martínez courted controversy in the United States when a video surfaced of him attending a cockfight in the Dominican Republic. The two pitchers are due back in court Thursday.
