Universidad del Sagrado Corazón confers 1,101 degrees in 87th graduation ceremony

USC president to graduates: ‘Where are you going to put your heart?’
By THE STAR STAFF
Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart University; USC by its initials in Spanish) held its 87th graduation ceremony on Tuesday at Coca-Cola Music Hall in Miramar, where 1,101 academic degrees were awarded and former Gov. Sila María Calderón Serra received an honorary doctorate in Humanities.
The ceremony was held within the framework of the 146th anniversary of the educational project of the Sociedad del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) in Puerto Rico.
Of the total degrees conferred, 240 were associate degrees and 594 were bachelor’s degrees in 40 academic concentrations. Of those, 172 were earned by first-generation university students in their families. In addition, the university awarded 254 master’s degrees and 13 graduate certificates.
This year, for the first time, students graduated from the bachelor’s programs in business development and management, graphic design, industrial design, fashion design and management, and creative writing and literature. At the graduate level, members of the inaugural class in design and creative production earned master’s degrees.
Academic distinctions were also conferred, with
the highest recognition granted to the student from each school who has achieved an exemplary record of academic excellence, leadership, university commitment and significant contribution inside and outside of the university. Those recognitions went to Tanairy Soto Rodríguez from the Ferré Rangel School of Communication, who also stands out with the honor of Valedictorian of the Class of 2026; Alexia Pérez Bosques from the School of Arts, Design and Creative Industries, who is also the Salutatorian of the Class of 2026; Lemuel Sánchez Pérez from the School of Health and Sciences; Fabián Emil Llanos Morris from the School of Business; and Camila Rivera Vega from the School of General Education.
In his message to the graduating class, USC President Gilberto J. Marxuach Torrós urged the students to assume the commitment to build, pointing out that this task involves choosing, every day, between two possible paths. Returning to a recent reflection of Pope Leo XIV, he stressed that it is a question of deciding between raising a new tower of Babel, imposing but empty and alien to human dignity, or working on the construction of a shared city, following the example of the prophet Nehemiah, who promoted the reconstruction of Jerusalem through the commitment and collective responsibility of all his people.
“Today you leave with something that millions of young people in the world and thousands in Puerto Rico do not always have the opportunity to receive: an education of excellence,” Marxuach Torrós said. “With it, they will be able to lift careers, businesses, homes, and communities. I urge you to do so with pride, without ever forgetting the transformative power of a prepared person who decides to build community. Our island faces great challenges and demands a fairer, wiser and more responsible way of leading itself. It is up to each of us to contribute to this construction with integrity, commitment and love. That is why I leave you with the following question: Where are you going to put your heart?”

Another significant moment in the ceremony was the awarding of an honorary doctorate in Humanities to Calderón Serra, in recognition of a career dedicated to public service, leadership, and a commitment to social justice and community development.
Senate seeks information on proposed Miramar project allegedly linked to lobbying firm Politank
By THE STAR STAFF
The island Senate has requested details on tax decrees, communications with developers, meetings and actions related to the exclusive residential project under construction in the Convention Center District.
Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz requested detailed information from the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC by its acronym in Spanish) regarding potential tax incentives, official communications and government actions related to the Opus Miramar luxury residential project, currently under construction in the San Juan Convention District, as part of an investigation to determine if there were any improprieties.

The request was made through Information Request 2026-0089, approved by the Senate during its June 8 session and addressed to the acting DDEC Secretary Roberto Lefranc Fortuño. The Senate gave Lefranc five days to provide the information.
In the document, the Senate requests information on whether the Opus Miramar project or any of its affiliated entities has a current or pending tax exemption decree under Law
60-2019, known as the Puerto Rico Incentives Code, as well as information on the decree number, date of issuance, beneficiary entity and expiration date.
The request also requires certified copies of all communications related to the project received from or issued by DDEC since January 2023, including exchanges with developers, authorized representatives, lobbyists, attorneys, certified public accountants, or consultants. Additionally, it requests all communications between La Fortaleza officials and DDEC personnel related to Opus Miramar since January 2025. A firm called Centuria, which is linked to the project, is allegedly a client of lobbying firm Politank, which was previously owned by La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández.
Rivera Schatz further requested a complete log of meetings, hearings, conferences or appearances in which the project was discussed or evaluated, including dates, participants,
purpose and minutes. The Senate also requested information on applications for decrees, extensions, transfers, or any other tax benefits granted, denied or pending, as well as the identification of individuals or entities that have appeared before DDEC on behalf of the development.
The letter states that the DDEC must submit the requested information on or before June 15. The Senate warned that, should it not receive a response within the allotted time, it could exercise its legal powers to obtain the requested documents, including holding public hearings.
Opus Miramar is the first exclusively residential project in the Convention District and began construction in late April with an estimated investment of $80 million. The development includes 40 luxury residences priced from around $3 million to over $11 million, along with amenities such as a concierge, gym, pool, and co-working spaces. At the start of construction, the developers reported that nearly 40% of the units already had buyers.
Coamo mayor opposes connecting housing development to water system that supplies parts of city
By THE STAR STAFF
Coamo Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla urged Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) Executive President Luis Gonzalez Delgado on Tuesday to reject the proposal to connect the Jacaranda housing development in Santa Isabel to the Toa Vaca water system, which supplies parts of the Los Llanos and Santa Catalina communities in Coamo.
The mayor said that after multiple meetings and discussions with PRASA, the Municipality of Coamo remains firmly opposed to connecting the residential project to the Toa Vaca water system, as it could cause service shortages for the communities that currently depend on it.
“We are requesting that the Jacaranda development be connected to the Santa Isabel well system and not to the system that currently supplies Coamo communities,” García Padilla stated. “Our responsibility is to protect our residents’ access to drinking water and prevent an infrastructure that is already facing limitations from receiving an additional burden that would affect service.”
The mayor noted that he has been warning PRASA, the Puerto Rico Planning Board, and the Office of Permit Management since last year about the consequences of approving
residential developments outside urban centers without the necessary capacity in the drinking water and electricity systems to support such growth.
“Months ago, we pointed out that hundreds of new homes were being proposed to connect to systems that are already showing signs of inadequacy,” the mayor stated in written remarks. “We warned about it then, and we reiterate it today. The water supply doesn’t increase simply by adding new customers. The reality is that the communities at the end of the systems are the first to suffer when the available capacity is no longer sufficient.”
García Padilla added that the communities of Santa Catalina and the higher areas of Los Llanos could be particularly affected due to their location within the distribution network, a situation that could worsen with the addition of new residential developments outside the originally planned service area.
“We don’t want our residents to experience what we’re seeing in various communities across the metropolitan area, where thousands of families face frequent outages, low water pressure, and difficulties accessing potable water,” he said. “It’s more responsible to prevent the problem now than to regret it later.”
The mayor added that the island needs a more aggressive
public policy to rehabilitate and develop existing properties in urban centers, leveraging existing infrastructure, rather than continuing to expand development into areas where essential systems are already operating under strain.
García Padilla urged PRASA to evaluate alternatives that would allow the residential project to be served by the Santa Isabel well system.

Health Dept. confirms infant botulism case
Rapid coordination ensures timely treatment
By THE STAR STAFF
The Puerto Rico Department of Health has confirmed a case of infant botulism and underscored the swift response that allowed the patient to receive life‑saving treatment within 48 hours of the initial alert.
According to the agency, the suspected case was reported on May 27 by the University Pediatric Hospital after an infant presented symptoms consistent with the illness, including generalized flaccidity, excessive drooling, constipation, reduced activity, and signs of respiratory distress.
Following the notification, Health Department personnel activated epidemiological
surveillance protocols and coordinated a specialized clinical consultation. As part of that process, the agency requested BabyBIG immunoglobulin on May 28. The treatment was administered the following day, May 29, once the patient was admitted.
“From the very beginning, our team worked in close coordination with national experts to ensure the child received the appropriate evaluation and treatment without delay,” Health Secretary Dr. Víctor Ramos Otero said. “The rapid response of our public health professionals and clinical staff was crucial in addressing this situation.”
Preliminary testing conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention detected botulinum toxin type A in a stool sample. Additional analyses, including efforts to isolate Clostridium botulinum, remain underway. Health authorities have also launched an epidemiological inves-
tigation to determine the source of exposure, though no specific origin had been identified as of Tuesday morning.
The most recent clinical update available on Tuesday indicated the infant was showing encouraging signs of recovery.
Infant botulism is a rare but potentially serious condition affecting children under 12 months old. It occurs when C. botulinum spores colonize the intestine and produce a toxin that affects the nervous system. Common symptoms include constipation, muscle weakness, poor feeding, weak cry, loss of head control, and, in severe cases, respiratory complications.

The Health Department emphasized that infant botulism is not transmitted from person to person. As a precaution, officials urged parents and caregivers to provide only safe, age‑appropriate foods to infants under one year old and to seek immediate medical attention if they observe symptoms associated with the condition.
The agency will continue to monitor the patient’s progress and collaborate with federal partners as laboratory and epidemiological investigations proceed.
Blood drive slated for next Tuesday at Auxilio Mutuo
By THE STAR STAFF
Given the pattern of declining blood donations during the summer months, Hospital Auxilio Mutuo and Banco de Sangre Servicios Mutuos announced a blood collection day that will take place next Tuesday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the 9th floor of Auxilio Mutuo
Hospital in Hato Rey.
The initiative, which commemorates Blood Donor Month, seeks to strengthen the blood reserves available to meet the needs of patients who require transfusions during surgeries, medical treatments and emergency situations. The call will be open to employees, visitors, family members of patients, outpatients, and community members who
wish to join the solidarity effort.
“Ensuring an adequate supply of blood is essential,” said Dr. Cristián Rodríguez Arocho, who chairs the Transfusion Committee at Auxilio Mutuo. “It is not only about responding to emergencies, but also about sustaining treatments and procedures that depend directly on this resource on a daily basis.”
Dr. Gerardo Latoni, medical director of the Mutual Services Blood Bank, stressed the importance of citizen participation to maintain healthy reserves throughout the year.
“During the summer we observed a drop in the participation of donors, without a reduction in the need for blood in hospitals,” he said. “For this reason, we call on you to donate voluntarily and recurrently. …”
MIDA study: Consumers spend less, consider leaving the island
Meanwhile, a rise in use of weightloss medications is indicated
By THE STAR STAFF
The 2026 Consumer Snapshot study by the Chamber of Food Marketing, Industry and Distribution (MIDA by its acronym in Spanish) concluded that most consumers in Puerto Rico have cut their monthly spending, a third of the population is considering leaving the island, and a number of respondents admitted to using weight loss (GLP 1) medications. “We see a slight but widespread reduction in average monthly spending, which points to a possible change in consumption patterns,” MIDA President Félix Aponte said at a press conference.
Specifically, food spending showed a 5% reduction, or $19 per month, while spending on household products decreased by a total of $18, equivalent to a 14% reduction.

MIDA Executive Vice President Manuel Reyes Alfonso noted that those dropoffs could be due to a combination of factors, including the “psychology of uncertainty that consumers are experiencing.”
“When asked about their household’s economic situation compared to last year, 31% of respondents said they are worse off,” he said. “When we asked about the economy in general, 66% of respondents view the current situation negatively, and 54% think it will be worse in a year.”
The study revealed that a third of respondents have considered leaving the island within the next one to three years, due to the economic situation or other conditions. The two most compelling reasons among those who said they have considered moving from Puerto Rico are “a better economic opportunity” (36%) and “a better quality of life” (28%).
“We see that younger generations and adults likely to raise children are the ones considering
leaving the country,” Aponte said.
“Of those who responded that they have considered leaving, 57% belong to the 18 to 27 year old age group, known as Generation L, and 37% belong to the 28 to 48 year old demographic, known as Millennials.
“This raises a red flag regarding the reality of population aging in Puerto Rico,” the MIDA president added.
A notable finding in this category was that 8% of those interviewed reported using GLP 1 medications, marketed under brand names such as Mounjaro, Ozempic and Semaglutide.
“This 8% is not just a demographic statistic. It represents a new consumer profile with specific needs for protein, supplements, and nutritional monitoring,” Aponte said. “In the United States, this figure is close to 12%, and studies have already examined the impact of these medications on consumers’ purchasing habits. Therefore, it is an issue that supermarkets must pay close attention to.”
Governor’s visit to ICE detention facility is strictly limited, she says
By ANA LEY and MARK BONAMO
Gov. Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey earlier this week was allowed to visit Delaney Hall, a detention center in Newark that has drawn protests for two weeks after immigrants inside complained about inhumane living conditions.
Sherrill described the visit as closely controlled and limited, and she said she was not permitted to meet with or speak directly with detainees.
“That is unacceptable,” Sherrill said in a prepared statement.
Sherrill, a Democrat, said she would continue to ask for a more thorough inspection of the center, including a visit by the state’s Department of Health. New Jersey’s attorney general has sued the center’s operator, Geo Group, which is one of the largest private prison operators in the United States. The attorney general is asking that state health inspectors be given full access to the facility.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents create a perimeter to let cars enter and exit without disruption by protesters at the Delaney Hall migrant detention center in Newark, N.J., June 6, 2026. New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill, who had been trying for weeks to tour Delaney Hall, was allowed to visit the detention center on Monday, June 8, 2026, but she said she was not allowed to speak with the detainees, who have complained of inhumane living conditions. (Lexi Parra/The New York Times)
Fights between demonstrators and detention center employees have erupted since last month at the front gates of Delaney Hall, with violent clashes common in the early morning hours. Demonstrators had blocked vehicles trying to leave the center, and in late May, heavily armed federal agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had responded with pepper spray and pepper balls.
In a statement, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said his department had granted Sherrill access to the federally run facility despite the fact she is not a federally elected official. Mullin said prisons operated by New Jersey were run more poorly than Delaney Hall.
“Gov. Sherrill won’t tell you: New Jersey state prisons face systemic health code violations,” Mullin said. “I’d encourage Gov. Sherrill to focus on her own backyard, and put the safety of her own constituents above illegal aliens.”
During an appearance on “Fox & Friends” on Monday, Tom Homan, President Donald Trump’s top border adviser, criticized the demonstrators and argued that detainees inside Delaney Hall were treated and fed well, contrary to claims that many have made about rotten food and dirty bathrooms.
Homan also said federal officials would send more federal agents to New York, vowing to push back against new restrictions approved by Gov. Kathy Hochul against federal immigration operations in the state. The recently passed legislation bars agents from wearing masks during immigration operations, allows agents to be sued for constitutional violations, and prohibits agents from searching “sensitive locations” such as hospitals and schools without a warrant signed by a judge.
Homan suggested that local officials were endangering the public by refusing to help facilitate the arrests of migrants.
“I made her a promise — you are going to see more ICE agents than you have ever seen in New York City,” Homan said on “Fox & Friends.” “It’s coming.”
Hochul said Homan’s threat directly contradicted what Trump had said to her in a room full of fellow governors. Trump, Hochul said, had told her that the federal government would not deploy a crackdown where it was not welcome.
“If they come here and go throughout New York state with a surge in ICE, there won’t be a Republican standing in this state,” Hochul said to a group of reporters. “Americans have had enough with the overreach of ICE.”
Asked about Hochul’s account of her interaction with Trump, the White House said, “Any criminal illegal alien living any place in the United States is subject to removal.”
In a social media post on Monday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized Homan’s threat.
“We will not allow ICE or anyone else to sow fear in our communities,” Mamdani said. “We will stand proudly with our immigrant neighbors and reject these attacks for what they are: an attempt to divide us.”
Democrat secures second LA mayor spot and ends Spencer Pratt’s run
By SHAWN HUBLER
Nithya Raman, a progressive Democrat who has drawn comparisons to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, will face Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles in a two-person race in November, the Associated Press determined Monday.
Raman, 44, a City Council member and former Bass ally, was behind in the initial vote count but came back in later returns to edge out Spencer Pratt, a Republican reality TV star who lost his home in the 2025 wildfires that devastated the Pacific Palisades, a wealthy coastal enclave.
Pratt had jumped out to an early lead in a field of more than a dozen contenders, in part because Republicans, who make up about 15% of the city’s electorate, had coalesced behind him. But his margin shrank as ballots from thousands of liberals who voted closer to Election Day were processed. Because Californians vote by mail in large numbers, counts are often slow, and it can take days or weeks to determine winners.
“Spencer Pratt had an exciting campaign that captured
national attention,” said Paul Mitchell, a political data expert.
He added that Pratt was “undone by the voters who were holding their ballots, waiting for the last shoe to drop on the Democratic side of the governor’s race.”
After Los Angeles County updated its vote totals Monday, Bass led overall with 34.3% of the vote, while Raman had 28.5%. Pratt, who had slipped to third place Sunday, fell further back to 25.8%.
Bass could have won outright in this nonpartisan election had she received a majority of the vote. Instead, the November runoff will be the first for an incumbent Los Angeles mayor since 2005, a stinging rebuke for Bass, a former Democratic member of Congress who was on the vice presidential short list in 2020.
The race between Raman and Bass, 72, sets up a generational contest between the center-left Democratic establishment that has shaped the city for years, and the young, restive progressives who have charged that baby boomers’ housing policies have systematically priced them out of Los Angeles.
Political experts pointed out that the general election turn-
out will be significantly larger and more progressive compared with the primary electorate, an advantage for Raman. Polls show that she has captured the imagination of a younger and more progressive generation of constituents, and that she will pose a formidable challenge to Bass in a one-on-one matchup.
“Bass will have to hold on to the liberal part of her base, and she must attract moderates and even conservatives, who did not vote for her last Tuesday,” said Zev Yaroslavsky, a longtime civic leader who directs the Los Angeles Initiative at the Luskin School of Public Affairs at UCLA.

Judge throws out policy imposing $100,000 fees for skilled worker visas
By ZACH MONTAGUE
ATrump administration initiative to impose $100,000 fees on employers seeking visas for skilled foreign workers amounts to an unlawful tax on those companies and must be voided “in its entirety,” a federal judge ruled Monday.
The decision by U.S. District Judge Leo T. Sorokin in Massachusetts nullified one of a series of tactics the administration has used to restrict legal immigration, even in fields in which foreign skilled labor helped address severe shortages.
In a 42-page opinion, Sorokin acknowledged that the policy, imposed in September, appeared to step on Congress’ “exclusive power” to levy taxes under the Constitution. He dismissed claims by the Trump administration that the fee was a “regulatory payment” that would have been within the executive branch’s power to set, not a tax.
“This is mere ipse dixit,” he wrote, meaning offered without evidence. “Defendants offer no definition for what constitutes ‘a regulatory payment,’ cite no cases or statutes employing the term, and advance no reasoned argument explaining how this term encompasses something different than a tax or a penalty.”
Sorokin wrote that the rule was hastily formulated with no formal process or request for public comment, despite what might have been broad opposition to the rule across many industries that have historically relied on the visa program to fill critical needs.
The Trump administration had argued in filings that the H-1B program “has been deliberately exploited to replace, rather than supplement, American workers with lower-paid,

lower-skilled labor.” President Donald Trump said the $100,000 fee would incentivize companies to hire more U.S. citizens into high-paying roles.
About 85,000 new visas have been provided annually to hire so-called high-skilled foreign workers at companies through the program’s lottery process. Technology, finance, hospitals and universities have all made ample use of those visas. A variety of companies have said the fee would be prohibitively expensive, in particular for smaller companies and nonprofit groups that rely on hiring workers from abroad.
A coalition of 20 states sued to end the policy in December, arguing it was certain to exacerbate shortages of skilled workers including teachers, academic researchers and medical workers.
“Every day, thousands of people with H-1B visas serve New Yorkers as doctors, teachers and other skilled workers,” New York Attorney General Letitia James said in a statement. “Today a court put an end to this administration’s illegal attempt to destroy this critical program and the many jobs it makes possible.”
The ruling came nearly six months after Judge Beryl Howell, an appointee of President Barack Obama, reached the opposite conclusion in a different case, allowing the administration to move forward with the visa fee. She said the administration had the right to impose the fee because under federal immigration law, Congress had given the president “broad authority to regulate entry into the United States for immigrants and nonimmigrants alike.”
But Sorokin, also an Obama appointee, wrote that the Supreme Court has maintained throughout several cases —
including one against Trump’s tariffs and another regarding penalties under the Affordable Care Act — that the president can only impose a tax or penalty when explicitly authorized by Congress.
The visa change was one of several that have appeared designed to take advantage of pressure points to restrict immigration flows and compel foreigners living in the country legally to leave. It fell hardest on highly educated professionals who had seen the program as a comparatively secure route to life in America.
In March, a bipartisan group of lawmakers introduced legislation that would waive the fee for foreign healthcare professionals, a demographic that has disproportionately helped prop up rural and underserved hospitals that have faced staffing shortages. The measure has not been adopted by either chamber. Federal judges have repeatedly found that Trump’s efforts to restrict various immigration programs were at odds with federal immigration law as Congress wrote it.
The ruling on Monday came just days after another federal judge similarly voided a policy in which the administration had directed U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services to freeze applications for work permits and other immigration benefits.
Taylor Rogers, a White House spokesperson, said that Trump “has clear legal authority to restrict entry of any class of aliens he determines is not in America’s best interests,” and added that the administration was “confident this order will be reversed on appeal.” Rogers cited Howell’s ruling from December as a further sign that the decision Monday was flawed.
Democrat secures second LA mayor spot...
From page 5
“It’ll be a challenging race for both candidates,” he added, “and one that will answer the question of how progressive Los Angeles really is.”
Pratt, 42, declared his candidacy on the anniversary of the fire in the Pacific Palisades, channeling the rage of his neighbors. The race quickly took on national overtones as he launched bombastic, social media-fueled broadsides against California’s Democratic leadership.
Pratt had generated a surge of social media attention and millions of dollars in campaign contributions, but paid a price for his Republican registration in an overwhelmingly liberal city. Among other mixed political blessings that he received, he was publicly praised by President Donald Trump.
As Pratt’s early lead disappeared, he suggested without evidence on social media that homeless people might have cast fraudulent votes for Raman, and the president made baseless assertions that the California vote count was “crooked.”
On Monday, before the race was called, Trump inaccurately declared on his social media site that it was “not possible” for Pratt to have lost the
lead that election officials reported before hundreds of thousands of outstanding ballots were counted. “Rigged Elections!” a Truth Social post said.
By then, Pratt had changed course, reminding his followers on social media that Raman’s lead was narrow and that the certified results were not due for three weeks, adding: “Let’s git-r-dun!”
Bass, a grandmother and former physician assistant who has been a fixture of Los Angeles politics since the crack cocaine epidemic of the 1980s, asked voters for a second four-year term to continue rebuilding Pacific Palisades, shrinking the homeless population and restoring the local economy. Most of the established business and labor organizations have backed her, including a police union that supported her opponent last time.
But her approval ratings tanked after the fire, particularly among white voters in West Los Angeles. Not even a faceoff last summer with the Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement that Democrats cheered restored her support completely.
Opponents calling for generational change framed her as an establishment politician in a political moment that has not been kind to incumbents.
As of late last month, her support stood at about 30% in polls.
Raman, who has an undergraduate degree in political theory from Harvard University and a master’s degree in urban planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has campaigned on the argument that the city’s recovery has lagged and that City Hall has failed to perform basic functions despite the mayor’s best efforts.
In particular, she has emphasized the city’s crushing shortage of affordable housing and the backlog of requests for core services, such as the repair of broken streetlights. She also has questioned the city’s spending on police salaries and the mayor’s signature homelessness program.
A mother of young twins and the wife of a screenwriter, Raman has served on the City Council since 2020, when she upset an incumbent with the support of the Democratic Socialists of America, which helped elect Mamdani. At City Hall, she backed Bass’ proposals and endorsed her reelection. Only after it appeared that Pratt would be Bass’ most significant opposition did Raman jump into the race, hours before the filing deadline.
“If you’re as frustrated by the broken status quo as I am, I hope you’ll join our movement to build a city that works for everyone,” Raman said in a statement Monday.

When Trump and Musk slashed aid they left us vulnerable, too
By NICHOLAS KRISTOF
After Elon Musk “spent the weekend feeding USAID into the wood chipper,” as he put it last year, he and President Donald Trump scoffed that American humanitarian aid was, in effect, woke nonsense.
Yet in reality American humanitarian aid not only saved one life every 10 seconds but was also safeguarding the world from epidemics. So now we face a rapidly increasing outbreak of Ebola, and the Trump administration is finding that some of the things that went into the wood chipper were the very tools needed to tackle the virus.
Global health is unpredictable, and it’s not certain that the U.S. Agency for International Development would have stopped Ebola this time. But in three ways, Trump’s assault on global health has left us in a worse position to combat Ebola (although, in fairness, the administration has done one thing right).
The first failing was the destruction of USAID. Jeremy Konyndyk, who oversaw the response to the 2014 Ebola epidemic for the agency, noted that it used to have a major presence in Ituri, Congo, where the Ebola outbreak appears to have begun. But most of the aid to Congo was cut, and Ebola spread widely by the time anyone realized that it was present.
“I don’t think there is any way that this outbreak would have been missed for so long if all those programs were still at full strength and the USAID mission team was still there,” Konyndyk told me. “And I can tell you that in my former job as head of disaster response, if my team was hearing reports of unexplained viral hemorrhagic fever

clusters in Congo, that would be a four-alarm-fire-type moment. I would have immediately notified the White House.”
The United States had been the largest donor to Congo, financing some 70% of humanitarian work there, according to Physicians for Human Rights — and most of that aid was shut off with no time for adjustment. Dr. Celine Gounder, an infectious disease specialist, posted a searing video interview in which a Congolese doctor spoke of another doctor forced by aid cuts to become a farmer, growing cassava.
The lack of a significant aid presence was compounded by the fact that this outbreak involved the unusual Bundibugyo strain of Ebola and by the remote location. But I’ve traveled through this area, and I’m confident that aid workers would have reported news of the outbreak — if the system hadn’t been mostly dismantled. And delay was disastrous.
“With Ebola, time is lives,” Dr. Tom Frieden, who was the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the 2014 Ebola epidemic, told me. “Get to an outbreak in days, and you can stop it in weeks. Get there in weeks, and it goes on for months. Get there in months, and it can go on for years.”
“This outbreak had a running head start,” he added. “By the time we began responding in 2014, there were 40 to 50 cases. By the time the world began responding this time, there were 400 to 500.”
The upshot is that this Ebola outbreak is already the third worst on record.
My New York Times colleague Declan Walsh has written extraordinary dispatches from the front lines that health workers trying to defeat the virus have lacked even basic protective equipment to stop it from spreading.
The second failing on the part of the Trump administration was its hostility to the World Health Organization. Trump not only withdrew the United States from the WHO, but his administration also reportedly barred some U.S. health officials even from communicating with counterparts there.
“For all its weaknesses, WHO is essential,” Frieden said. “The stronger WHO is, the safer we are.” Traditionally, the U.S. and WHO worked together in a constructive partnership, pooling knowledge and capabilities. But today, while WHO officials are on the ground in Ituri, the United States didn’t even learn about the outbreak until nine days after WHO did.
The third failing is simply the administration’s disregard for public health and lack of preparation. The Biden administration had several hundred pages of planning documents for handling an infectious disease outbreak, and it left these for incoming Trump aides, according to Stat News — but the Trump administration reportedly ignored the materials.
That’s not a surprise. The Trump administration also left positions for disease preparedness vacant. It cut funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which is helping develop a vaccine for this strain of Ebola. Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised that the State Department is “going to reengage on the issue of Gavi,” but it’s unclear what this means or what the timetable is.
The administration is reportedly seeking to cut funding further for HIV/AIDS worldwide, targeting the PEPFAR program that has saved more than 26 million lives so far. Eight former heads of the
CDC recently wrote a joint essay warning that these cuts would weaken surveillance for diseases like Ebola and “will destroy PEPFAR and undermine health security.”
I said that Trump did one thing right, and that was to push to end the war in eastern Congo, for that war has made it harder to detect and respond to disease outbreaks in the region; most notably, the administration imposed sanctions on Rwanda’s military for its role in the conflict. But Trump’s aid cuts work in the other direction by fomenting conflict. One recent study found that in areas of Africa that had received significant assistance, the abrupt shutdown of USAID caused roughly a 10% increase in violence, including riots and combat deaths.
Ebola is a terrifying disease, initially producing a fever, muscle ache and headaches and then leading to vomiting, diarrhea, and often bleeding and death. It is transmitted by body fluids, but in a broader sense it is transmitted by love: When people tend to an ailing loved one or prepare a body for burial, it is easy to be infected by blood, vomit or diarrhea.
The fecklessness of Washington officials, recklessly cutting programs they didn’t understand, contrasts with the raw courage of doctors, nurses, aid workers and burial teams in places like Congo who are risking their lives and making do without adequate supplies to stop this outbreak.
The USAID cuts were lethal: I’ve documented how we let children die from malaria for want of $2 mosquito bed nets or from starvation because we couldn’t be bothered to provide 50cent packets of peanut paste. A Boston University researcher estimates that the aid cuts have already cost more than 750,000 lives worldwide.
Yet USAID was intended to protect our interests as well as project our values — and a significant element of that self-interest was fighting diseases like tuberculosis and Ebola.
Now Musk and Trump — and Rubio, who let all this happen on his watch — are learning that USAID wasn’t just a pet project of woke bleeding hearts. The actions of these three men have led to an immense number of unnecessary deaths worldwide and may have empowered Ebola. They have made the world — and America — less safe.

‘Scary Movie’ and the art of the pop culture gag
By KELLINA MOORE
This article contains spoilers for the new “Scary Movie.”
What’s your favorite Scary Movie?
No, not like “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” or “Friday the 13th” — more like the one where Anna Faris gets into a fist fight with a cat or the one where Regina Hall gets stabbed for talking in the theater. Yes, I’m talking about the parody movies of the 2000s (and one from the early 2010s) that sent up the reigning horror tropes along with any major pop culture moments of the year.
What began as a Wayans brothers comedy spoof of ’90s horror expanded into a full franchise beloved by some and loathed by others for its occasionally sharp satire, mixed in with blue comedy and equal-opportunity offensive humor. The Wayans family were not involved after “Scary Movie 2” because of contract disputes, and the franchise was handed off to director David Zucker (of “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun” fame). The new film (in theaters) marks the Wayans’ return to the pop phenomenon they created.
A look back at these films reveals not timeless humor but in fact the exact opposite: references that are so delightfully dated that each film becomes a perfect time capsule of when it was made. As the killer in the goofy Ghostface mask claws his way back from the grave once again, here’s a recap of all the gags, goofs and groan-worthy bits that came before — and an explanation of where the new one fits in.
‘Scary Movie’ (2000)
It all began with a (relatively) focused target: the teen slasher movies of the ’90s. Combining plot points from “Scream” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” this first movie follows a group of teens with a horrible secret. Along the way, it pokes fun at tropes like the inept killer (“I gotta stop drinking,” Ghostface declares after falling repeatedly during a chase sequence); the conveniently sexed up victim (the opening sequence sees Carmen Electra, stripped to her underwear, bouncing in slow motion through lawn sprinklers); and the virginal final girl (Cindy, played by Anna Faris, reveals she has an electric fence and a sign that says “no trespassing” around her crotch).
Notable pop culture references include a James Van Der Beek cameo for a “Dawson’s Creek” joke, Cindy being devastated by Geri Halliwell’s departure from the Spice Girls and, most shockingly, Brenda (Regina Hall) saying she went to a party at Puff Daddy’s house where things got “freaky.”
‘Scary Movie 2’ (2001)
The second film returned to take aim at supernatural horror movies, this time largely riffing on creepy mansion movies like “The Haunting” and “House on Haunted Hill.” Tim Curry and David Cross play a scheming professor and his assistant, who lure the teens from the first film, now in college, to the eerie Hell House. Targeted tropes include the ghostly whispering voice, who here gets irritated when Cindy can’t take a hint (“check the [expletive] music room!” it shouts); the portrait of

“Scary
the lady of the house who almost exactly resembles a new visitor (“except her hair isn’t as oily”); and the possessed girl’s contorting body (here because she’s having sex with a ghost).
In my personal favorite bit, Cindy is fleeing a skeleton when Brenda intervenes: “This is a skeleton, this is bones! Would you run from Calista Flockhart?” she asks, before cleanly removing the skeleton’s head and playing catch with it. The most dated reference? Cindy stumbles across the ruined remains of Florida’s ballots from the 2000 presidential election. Others include an extended bit about a vulgar parrot riffing on “Paulie,” and a joke about the “this is your brain on drugs” public service announcement.
‘Scary Movie 3’ (2003)
As the films go on, and without the Wayans brothers’ involvement, the satire becomes much less focused. Where the first two movies zeroed in on specific subgenres, the later entries tend to spoof whatever the biggest movies of the year were. In the case of “Scary Movie 3,” those movies are “Signs” and the American remake of “The Ring.” It follows Cindy and her new friends George (Simon Rex) and Tom (Charlie Sheen) as they try to unravel the mysteries of crop circles and eerie video tapes to stop an alien invasion. What the movie lacks in clear purpose, though, it makes up for in mile-a-minute jokes, visual gags like the sheriff’s expanding hat and cameos galore (Jenny McCarthy, Pamela Anderson, Simon Cowell and Fat Joe, to name a few). The most dated reference is also the climax: It turns out that the cursed video spread around after the creepy girl’s dad (George Carlin, by the way) returned it to Blockbuster instead of “Pootie Tang.”
‘Scary Movie 4’ (2006)
The cold open of this film is, in my opinion, worth the price of admission. Shaquille O’Neal and Dr. Phil (playing themselves) get stuck in a “Saw” trap — hilarity and gore ensue, as do jokes about Shaq’s inability to make a free-throw shot and Dr. Phil’s not actually being a medical doctor. OK, it isn’t
terribly clever, nor is it exactly a pointed satire of the “Saw” films (which are ripe for ribbing). But the film so perfectly encapsulates the 2006 cultural zeitgeist that I couldn’t help but chuckle. The rest of the movie ropes in “War of the Worlds” and “The Grudge” as primary targets. When the so-called “tripod” aliens arrive, the first is actually what looks like a giant iPod nano — another moment of perfect cultural confluence. Other timely references include “The Girls Next Door” reality show, “Million Dollar Baby,” “Badd” by the Ying Yang Twins and Tom Cruise sofa-jumping on “Oprah.”
‘Scary Movie 5’ (2013)
This is the only film in the franchise not featuring Anna Faris and Regina Hall, and it suffers dearly for it (not to mention that the golden age of the parody movie had long faded by this point.) Combining spoofs of “Paranormal Activity” and “Black Swan” (sure, I guess!), this entry centered instead on Jody (Ashley French), whose creepy kids and haunted house keep getting in the way of her big starring role in “Swan Lake.”
It relies very heavily on physical, slapstick humor, namely a dizzying number of bits with sped-up security camera footage and kicks to the groin. One successful sendup: the religious, superstitious nanny. At one point, she keeps returning with larger and larger crucifixes until she is dragging a life-size cross like Jesus himself. References that encapsulate the time include a Coke-and-Mentos gag, a joke about the Tiger Woods cheating scandal and a cameo from “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Shereé Whitfield doing her famous catchphrase, “Who gon’ check me, boo?”
‘Scary Movie’ (2026)
With more than a decade since the last film, there’s a whole mountain of pop culture for the Wayans brothers, on their return, to satirize. As you might expect, reboots and remakes like “Halloween,” “Final Destination: Bloodlines” and the new “Scream” movies take most of the hits. Pop culture references abound, too, including ones that already feel dated about COVID tests and using they/them pronouns. What is referenced most of all, though, are the previous movies in the franchise, with Marlon and Shawn Wayans ripping on the “Scary Movie” entries they weren’t involved in, alongside Anthony Anderson (who is featured in the third and fourth installments) and none other than Shaq himself.

S&P 500, Nasdaq fall as tech selling resumes, Trump vows to react to downed US helicopter
The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indexes fell on Tuesday as a rebound in technology shares faded and as President Donald Trump said the U.S. must react to Iran’s shooting down of a U.S. helicopter.
Trump wrote in a social media post that Iran had shot down the U.S. Apache helicopter that was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz overnight, and vowed to respond, which added to doubts about prospects for a truce in the Middle East war.
The Cboe Volatility Index hit its highest level since April 7 during the session as stocks sold off.
Technology stocks resumed Friday’s selloff following a bounce on Monday. The S&P 500 tech index fell more than 4% before paring losses. The Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index dropped as much as 8.6% after rising 3% in early trading.
“When the bounce ran its course this morning, the tape came for sale more broadly. There’s also a rotation going on ... so part of it is more of a momentum unwind,” said Michael O’Rourke, chief market strategist at JonesTrading in Stamford, Connecticut.
The Russell 1000 value index outperformed the growth index.
Trump’s post also briefly “created another leg down,” O’Rourke said.
In addition, investors may be worried ahead of inflation data and a highly anticipated SpaceX IPO later this week.
According to preliminary data, the S&P 500 lost 20.25 points, or 0.27%, to end at 7,385.48 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 254.47 points, or 0.98%, to 25,675.19. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 84.28 points, or 0.14%, to 50,857.58.
Consumer price data for May could offer fresh clues on how the rise in energy prices, driven by the Iran war, is impacting inflation. The data is due on Wednesday.

SpaceX’s market debut on Friday could also be a hurdle for U.S. stocks as investors worry about possible overexuberance among high-growth technology stocks. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is aiming to raise $75 billion and targeting a valuation of $1.75 trillion, the most ever for an IPO.
Some strategists have said investors are potentially booking profits in the high-flying semiconductor stocks to make room for SpaceX in their portfolios.
Technology and AI-linked stocks sold off sharply on Friday after Broadcom’s disappointing forecast fueled concerns about high valuations in the sector,

particularly in chipmakers, which have rallied sharply this year. The semiconductor index remains up more than 70% for the year so far.
Relief rally, dip-buying or a dead cat bounce? However you want to characterize Wall Street’s modest rebound on Monday, what is clear is that it was concentrated in places you’d expect: tech megacaps that have been in the vanguard of the AI boom. Meanwhile, 60% of the S&P 500 ended in the red again yesterday.
As to Monday’s individual movers, chipmaker Marvell Technology’s inclusion in the S&P 500 index helped its stock jump by 9%.

Where does Monday’s rebound leave us? It’s hard to see past the AI juggernaut with all the IPO hoopla in the background. Elon Musk’s SpaceX is due to list at the end of the week, and OpenAI on Monday said it had also confidentially filed for an IPO. With Anthropic also set to hit this summer, the market will be absorbing an unprecedented amount of issuance.
Trump blames Iran for downing of US helicopter and vows to retaliate
By ERIC SCHMITT, MAGGIE HABERMAN, EUAN WARD and MICHAEL LEVENSON
President Donald Trump on Tuesday accused Iran of shooting down an Army attack helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz and promised to retaliate, in the latest sign that a fragile ceasefire was failing to quell the war and open a path to a durable peace.
In a social media post, Trump said he had been informed by the military that Iranian forces had downed the Apache helicopter Monday night. Both crew members, the pilot and the gunner, were rescued within two hours and were in stable condition, the U.S. military said.
“Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” Trump wrote. He did not elaborate.
His statement came after a flare-up in attacks between Iran and Israel on Sunday and Monday threatened to push the Middle East back into a wider war.
Iran did not admit or deny downing the Apache helicopter. But its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said on social media that forces operating close to Iran were at “constant risk on account of their own human errors, plain accidents, or potentially being caught in crossfire.”
“To reduce risk, best solution is for them to leave,” he wrote. “We prefer language of diplomacy but speak other languages, too.”
The threat of further U.S. attacks on Iran came as Israeli forces pounded southern Lebanon as they fought Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed militia, despite a new U.S.brokered ceasefire in that country.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry said the latest Israeli airstrikes had killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more in Tyre, one of southern Lebanon’s largest cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its ancient Roman ruins.
The fighting on multiple fronts in recent days has underscored how difficult the intertwined conflicts in the region are to control, notwithstanding Trump’s repeated claims that the United States and Iran are close to a deal to end the war.
A ceasefire in April that was supposed to stop the fighting has only slowed the pace of attacks, and sporadic negotiations me-

diated by Pakistan, Qatar and others have not led to an agreement that would end the war with Iran launched by the United States and Israel in late February, resolve the fate of Tehran’s nuclear program and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, the choke point for crude oil and natural gas that Iran has effectively blockaded.
On Tuesday, U.S. Central Command, which oversees U.S. forces in the Middle East, said in a statement that the Army helicopter “went down near the coast of Oman while patrolling regional waters.”
An Iranian Shahed attack drone downed the helicopter, a U.S. official who spoke anonymously to discuss operational matters said Tuesday, confirming a report by Axios.
The U.S. Navy deployed a remotely piloted aquatic drone to rescue the two downed crew members, Capt. Tim Hawkins, a Central Command spokesperson, said in a text message Tuesday.
“The drone picked them up and transported them to another location on the water where they were then hoisted up to a helicopter for further transport,” Hawkins said.
The AH-64 Apache gunship, armed with Hellfire missiles, is among the most fearsome aircraft operating in the region. The aircraft have been patrolling the Strait of Hormuz in part to deter small-boat attacks
and to shoot down Iranian drones. They have also been pushing closer to Iranian territory — including Iranian-controlled islands in the strait and the Persian Gulf — as part of the U.S. military’s aggressive posture in the region.
The military has also used armed MQ-9 Reaper drones and F/A-18 and F-35 attack planes to challenge Iran’s control of the strait.
In response to Iran’s blockade, the U.S. military has since April 13 enforced a blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports. It has turned away 134 vessels and disabled seven others that were violating the blockade, U.S. Central Command said.
The latest was a Palau-flagged oil tanker that was sailing in international waters in the Gulf of Oman toward Iran on Monday.
An F/A-18 Super Hornet launched from the USS Abraham Lincoln fired into the tanker’s engineering and steering spaces, stopping the ship after, Central Command said, it ignored America’s warnings to turn back.
In April, before the ceasefire, Iran shot down an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet over its territory, prompting the two crew members to eject from their stricken aircraft. Both were rescued.
The fighting in the Persian Gulf has continued in tandem with the war in Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel, complicat-
ing the push for a peace deal.
Iran has insisted that any peace agreement apply to Lebanon. Israel has rejected that condition, saying it must continue striking Hezbollah in an effort to stop the group from firing rockets and drones into Israel.
Hezbollah, for its part, has rejected the latest U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement with Israel, saying its terms were tantamount to surrender. Since then, Israel and Hezbollah have continued to trade attacks. The Lebanese government has little leverage over the militant group.
Hours before the latest strikes, the Israeli military issued an evacuation warning for the entire city of Tyre, which was home to roughly 100,000 people before the latest war between Hezbollah and Israel erupted in March.
For the first time, the warning included the port city’s Christian quarter, underscoring how Israel’s offensive has been widening. As people fled Tyre, the city’s Christian quarter became one of its last relatively populated enclaves.
The Israeli military said last week that it had “identified activity by dozens of Hezbollah operatives inside the Christian neighborhood” and called on residents “to demand the removal of the organization’s operatives from your areas.” It provided no evidence for its claim.
Israeli strikes on Tuesday also targeted other towns and villages across southern Lebanon, including areas not covered by the evacuation warnings, according to Lebanon’s state-run news agency.
More than 3,600 people have been killed and 1 million people displaced by the war in Lebanon, according to Lebanese authorities. Thirty people have been killed in Israel, officials there have said.
After an Israeli strike near the Lebanese capital, Beirut, set off attacks between Israel and Iran on Sunday and Monday, both countries indicated that they would hold off on further hostilities. But the Iranian military warned Monday that it would attack Israel again if it resumed its “aggression and hostile acts,” including in southern Lebanon.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel dismissed that threat and said that while Iran and Hezbollah had been weakened, “our battle against them is still not finished.”
One is the pope, the other an atheist. They both oppose Trump.
By JASON HOROWITZ
When Pope Leo XIV met in Madrid with Spain’s left-wing prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, on Monday morning, they represented, at least to many liberals, a powerful duo joining forces to lead the opposition to President Donald Trump.
“They have the same voice,” when it comes to speaking out against Trump, Cardinal José Cobo of Madrid said.
Leo has drawn the president’s fury for criticizing the war in Iran and later saying he had “no fear” of the Trump administration. Sánchez has battled Trump on everything from NATO spending to the migration policy to his opposition to the wars in the Gaza Strip and Iran.
Their motivations, though, are seemingly different.
If the pope was dragged into the fight by Trump, Sánchez happily jumped in. Sánchez is perhaps Europe’s most accomplished political escape artist, after wriggling free from countless crises during his eight years in power. His most recent high-wire act has been to seize on international quarrels with Trump to raise his global profile and distract from troubles at home, especially the corruption scandals and accusations now swirling around his former allies and family.
Appearing with the pope “will help Sánchez with his external public image,” said Joseba Louzao, a professor at Cardinal Cisneros University and author of “A Brief History of the Catholic Church in Spain.”
Meeting the pope at the Vatican’s Embassy in Madrid on Monday, Sánchez sought to underline their connection by giving the pontiff a Spanish olive bonsai tree that was, the Spanish government said in a statement to reporters, “a universal symbol of peace, dialogue and understanding, values shared by Spain and the Vatican.”
Sánchez’s relationship with the pope may not matter much in Spain, an increasingly polarized country where feelings about the prime minister were already deeply entrenched, Louzao said. The great hope for Sánchez, he suggested, would be Trump seizing on Monday’s Madrid meeting to attack them together — potentially upgrading the prime minister’s global status and invigorating his base.
On the face of things, the two men have little in common. Sánchez is a self-declared atheist, a staunch defender of abortion rights and an opponent of Catholic involvement in public education. But to hear him tell it, he is also singing from the same hymn sheet as Leo. He and the pope have “a certain degree of

harmony” he said during a May 27 trip to meet Leo in the Vatican, whether it be their shared opposition to war, their concerns about giant tech companies, or their defense of migrants.
“The Catholic Church and the government of Spain are once again, I believe, very much in tune,” Sánchez added.
He called Leo a “a moral compass” as they navigated with “common sense against irrationality and the law of the jungle.”
When Spain let passengers from a cruise ship infested with hantavirus dock in the Canary Islands in May, Sánchez responded to local criticism by citing “the explicit recognition expressed by none other than the pope for the solidarity and empathy shown by the people of the Canary Islands.”
Spain’s Catholic prelates have tried to avoid too strong a comparison.
Joan Planellas, the archbishop of Tarragona, acknowledged that when it came to immigration, opposition to war and the need to regulate tech giants. “Certainly, on these topics that seem more left-wing, if we speak politically, there is a certain harmony.”
But not on abortion, euthanasia and other “delicate topics,” he said.
Cobo added that Sánchez’s agreement with the pope on some issues did not mean he should use him as a political shield, especially because they still disagreed on many matters.
Eloy Alberto Santiago, the bishop of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, where Leo, joined by Sánchez, will meet with migrants, said that while the church was a driver behind

Pope Leo XIV visits the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known as the Blue Mosque, in Istanbul, Turkey, on Nov. 29, 2025. the Spanish government’s recent move toward giving papers to hundreds of thousands of immigrants lacking legal status, it did not mean “we identify with a party or a government.”
Government officials have also said the prime minister is wary of drawing too close to the pope. They said it ran the risk of seeming tacky and transparently political, and could provoke a backlash within the prime minister’s left-wing base, which disagrees deeply with the Catholic Church on issues such as gay rights, abortion and feminism. In that regard, Sánchez and Leo have a common interest in not seeming too buddy-buddy.
“The alignment is already so visible that there is no need to overemphasize it or try to co-opt his figure,” said Jorge Tamames, a fellow at the Elcano Royal Institute, a think tank in Madrid.
The church, he said, will move cautiously amid the “wasp’s nest” of Spanish politics, but the pope’s positions on the major issues of the day “are so irreconcilable with the right or with the far-right” that “a contrast is inevitable, and the government doesn’t need to force it.”
Sánchez’s allies also hope the pope’s visit helps point out the distance between rightwing leaders who flaunt their Catholicism and the actual leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Spain’s far-right party, Vox, has tried to win over Catholic voters by presenting itself as the protector of Catholic traditions, even though it has also criticized Catholic bishops for supporting migrants.
To prevent Sánchez from deriving political
capital from the visit, conservatives have sought to characterize him as trying to use Leo as a shield.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the president of the Madrid region, who also visited the pope in the Vatican this month, has accused Sánchez of “trying to appropriate” Leo’s visit. “In the last eight years, he has been incapable of having a single gesture toward Catholics,” Ayuso said.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, the leader of the main conservative Spanish opposition party, mocked Sánchez as trying to wrap himself in the clean robes of the popular pope.
“If he wants to get closer to the pope, he should remember the seventh commandment,” Feijóo said, “‘Thou shalt not steal,’ and the eighth commandment, ‘Thou shalt not lie.’”
Speaking to the Spanish parliament on Monday, under its frescoed dome, Leo appeared to allude to those political divisions.
“It falls to me today to speak a calm and firm word to those who bear the grave responsibility of legally ordering social coexistence,” Leo said, before Sánchez and all his political enemies.
“Political pluralism should not degenerate into the constant disparagement of one’s adversary,” Leo said, adding, “firmness does not require contempt; disagreement does not entail humiliation.”
He emphasized that he was not trying to wade into politics or stepping over dividing lines between church and state. If anything, the pope seemed careful to keep a foot on both partisan sides. He appealed to conservatives by speaking in defense of “the unborn child” — and to liberals by calling migration a “tragic drama” that challenged the conscience of nations.
He echoed Sánchez’s slogan of “no war,” by calling for “diplomatic courage” to resolve global disputes with “means offered by international law.”
“It is therefore a cause for concern that, in various parts of the world — and in Europe as well — rearmament is once again being presented as an almost inevitable response to the fragility of the international situation,” Leo said.
When the pope finished, Sánchez joined the rest of the chamber in a lengthy standing ovation.
But Luis Argüello, the archbishop of Valladolid and president of the Spanish Bishops Conference, warned Sánchez and the left against suggesting that “the church is closer to us.”
Spain’s left, the archbishop said in an interview, should apply the church’s teaching to actions “inside our own nation,” including, he said, “on matters relating to corruption.”

Azucareros book return to Double-A ‘Carnaval de Campeones’
By THE STAR STAFF
The Azucareros of Yabucoa defeated the Leones of Patillas 12-1 on Monday night, booking themselves a return trip to the Superior Double-A Baseball League “Carnaval de Campeones” (Tournament of Champions) after a one-year absence.
The lopsided victory at Néstor Morales Stadium in Humacao earned Yabucoa the Southeast Section final series crown and eliminated Patillas, last year’s tournament runner-up.
A five-run outburst, highlighted by a grand slam from Jan Ávila in the top of the first inning, gave the Azucareros a lead they would not relinquish. Right-hander Arturo

The Azucareros of Yabucoa trounced the Leones of Patillas 12-1 on Monday night to win the Southeast Section section title and punch their ticket for a return trip to the Superior Double-A Baseball League “Carnaval de Campeones” after a oneyear absence. (Gilmari Cruz)
Martoral pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win.
Michael Vega, Luis Omar Dávila, Sergio Ortiz and Carlos Rodríguez pitched in relief without allowing a hit. Yabucoa’s first five runs came off starter Carlos Polanco, who managed to retire only one batter and took the loss for Patillas.
Ávila drove in four runs and scored two for the Azucareros. Jan Hernández drove in three runs, Luis Pintor hit a two-run homer, and Kevin Santa crossed home plate three times.
Yabucoa became the fifth team to qualify for the “Carnaval,” joining the Mulos of Juncos (East), Petateros of Sabana Grande (Southwest), Tigres of Hatillo (North) and Maratonistas of Coamo (South).
Wiley’s buzzer-beater lifts Aguada over Manatí
Visiting Atléticos beat Capitanes in overtime, Mayagüez also wins on the road Sunday night
By THE STAR STAFF
Alast-second shot by Jacob Wiley lifted the Santeros of Aguada over the Osos of Manatí on Monday night in the only Superior National Basketball league game on the schedule.
After a midrange jumper by Kristian Doolittle put Manatí up by a point with two seconds left in the fourth quarter at Ismael Chavalillo Delgado Coliseum in Aguada, Wiley took a cross-court pass and beat the buzzer to give the Santeros a 106-105 victory.
Iván Gándia led Aguada (12-13) with 26

points, while Rigoberto Mendoza and John Jenkins III scored 25 and 21 points, respectively. Wiley finished with 17 points.
Jameer Nelson Jr. led Manatí (10-17) with 26 points, while Doolittle and Tyquan Rolon added 22 and 19 points, respectively.
On Sunday night, the Atléticos of San Germán and the Indios of Mayagüez registered a pair of road wins.
At Manuel “Petaca” Iguina Coliseum in Arecibo, the visiting Atléticos defeated the Capitanes 103-99 in overtime.
The Capitanes went into the halftime break with a 44-35 lead, but the Atléticos responded in the third quarter to narrow the deficit to two points going into the fourth quarter, which ended with the score tied at 85 points apiece.
In overtime, the visitors imposed their pace and outscored the Capitanes 18-14 to
complete the comeback.
André Curbelo recorded a triple-double with 25 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for San Germán (189). Montrezl Harrell added 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists, while Nick Perkins contributed 21 points and 14 rebounds.
Timothy Soares finished with 20 points and 15 rebounds for Arecibo (14-9).
Ramses Meléndez added 21 points, Cady Lalanne contributed 15 points and seven rebounds, and Derrick Walton Jr. finished with 16 points and eight assists.

The Indios of Mayagüez completed their comeback by outscoring the Piratas of Quebradillas 24-12 in the fourth quarter en route to a road victory on Sunday night.
At Raymond Dalmau Pérez Coliseum in Quebradillas, meanwhile, the visiting Indios defeated the Piratas, 80-70.
The hosts dominated the first half and went into the break with a 40-27 lead, but Mayagüez rallied in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just two points, 58-56, heading into the final period.
The Indios completed their comeback in the fourth quarter by holding the Piratas to just 12 points and scoring twice that number themselves to nail down the victory.
Tyrell Harrison led Mayagüez (10-15) with 20 points and 16 rebounds. Nathan Sobey added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Eugene German contributed 15 points, six rebounds and seven assists.
Gian Clavell finished with 26 points for Quebradillas (8-19). Phillip Wheeler scored 20 points, while Emmanuel Mudiay added 18 points and five assists.
Night with the Knicks: Rancor, jubilation and an unusual loss
By SANTUL NERKAR
As the New York Knicks have romped through the NBA playoffs this spring, their embattled fans, desperate for their beloved team’s first title in more than 50 years, wondered what — if anything — could spoil the good vibes.
For many New Yorkers, the arrival of President Donald Trump, who attended Monday’s Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden against the San Antonio Spurs, seemed like an answer. Heightened security at the arena meant that some fans waited more than an hour to enter. Entire blocks nearby were closed to pedestrians. The popular watch party outside the Garden was canceled because of safety concerns.
The fans in deep-blue New York City responded with rancor. Trump smiled and saluted in the face of deafening boos when he briefly appeared on the arena’s video board during the playing of the national anthem. The ire quickly turned to cheers as the screen shifted to Jalen Brunson, the Knicks’ all-star point guard.
In the end, amid a carnival-like atmosphere at the Garden, the Knicks lost for the first time in a month and a half. But throughout the city, Trump’s attendance was a footnote on a night when New Yorkers banded together to support a team that had united them like few things can.
“I don’t care about Trump,” the Rev. Al Sharpton said in an interview before the game. “I’m going anyway. This is one of the few things I’ve seen New Yorkers across gender and race united around. You walk around, everyone has Knicks’ gear. It’s healthy.”
Inside the arena, as well as at bars and outdoor watch parties, fans gathered for a night of anxious, rambunctious support. They were united in their complaints about the referees, their love for José Alvarado — the fiery guard and Brooklyn native — and their disgust for the foul-drawing tendencies of Victor Wembanyama, San Antonio’s 7-foot-4 star.
“It’s the Knicks versus the refs,” said Juan Herrera, 20, who was watching at a bar in the belly of Pennsylvania Station. “It’s not even the Knicks versus the Spurs.”
Upstairs at Madison Square Garden, Trump sat in a suite above the scorer’s table with a group of allies that included Lee Zeldin, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency; Dan Scavino, the White House deputy chief of
staff; Interior Secretary Doug Burgum; and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.
He was the guest of James Dolan, the unpopular Knicks owner and a longtime friend of the president. Dolan told ESPN in 2018 that he got married at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club in Florida.
“They’re really great, a great team,” Trump said last week to reporters, discussing his support of the Knicks. “I’m happy for Jim.”
Mayor Zohran Mamdani also attended, wearing a striped shirt that included the Knicks’ colors. He watched from a standing-room section farther away from the action than Trump, with a group of state representatives from New York. He said he paid about $1,000 for his own ticket.

In recent weeks, Mamdani has made the Knicks a significant part of his political messaging. After canceling the watch party outside the Garden, the city held a free one at Bryant Park in midtown Manhattan. The Knicks also had free watch parties at Wollman Rink in Central Park and Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg.
Answers to the Sudoku and Crossword on page 21

Trump is a fan of the Knicks and often attended games in the 1990s, when the team made two finals appearances and earned a reputation as a tough-minded team. On Monday, the celebrity row featured figures including Ben Stiller, Mariska Hargitay and Chris Rock.
On Sunday, the Secret Service announced heavy restrictions for fans on account of Trump’s attendance. Entrances had the unpleasant vibes of airport security, with members of the Transportation Security Administration on hand to help with the extensive inspections, even opening and checking the purses and wallets of media members.
On Monday, Neal Kwatra, a political consultant, expressed his dismay as he stood in line for an hour to get into the game at West 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue.
“It’s glacial,” he said. “Really poor job of planning by all involved.”
Mavelyne Mipo, 31, and her mother and sister, who were visiting from France, got to Bryant Park at 1:30 p.m. to grab some of the first spots on the lawn.
“It’s the Knicks,” Mipo said, as she waited for the gates to open. “I had to be here early and support.”
After the game, as the police maintained limited access to Madison Square Garden, some fans gathered by an adjacent $1.50 pizza shop. Giovanni Macek, 23, hung his head low out the window while finishing a buffalo chicken slice.
“I feel pretty sad because I wanted New York to experience a three-game win streak,” Macek said. But he was still grateful, saying, “I have the chance to see this amazing game.”
As disappointed Knicks fans streamed to the exits of the watch party at Wollman Rink in Central Park, yells of anger and profane chants criticizing the referees filled the air.
