Reservoirs are emptying, but rain is due By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) said Tuesday that 14 reservoirs registered decreases in their water supplies during the preceding 24 hours amid the dry conditions that continue to affect the island. But help is on the way in the form of a tropical wave that is forecast to move into Puerto Rico on Wednesday, according to a National Weather Service (NWS) forecast. According to PRASA, the surface level at La Plata reservoir in Comerío fell nine centimeters, bringing it even closer to the level triggering operational adjustments. Currently, the reservoir is at 45.71 meters, while to enter the adjustment phase it must reach 44.90 meters. Another reservoir that registered a decrease was Carraízo in Trujillo Alto, with a reduction of seven centimeters, followed by Cidra, which decreased one centimeter. Both reservoirs, which supply customers in San Juan, Trujillo Alto, Carolina, Canóvanas, Gurabo, Aguas Buenas, Caguas, Cayey and Cidra, have been in the operational adjustment phase for several weeks. Carraízo’s water level is at 37.69 meters, while Cidra’s is at 400.15 meters. Along similar lines, most other island reservoirs registered water level decreases, led by Guayo in Lares with a reduction of 0.21 meters. Others, led by Dos Bocas in Arecibo and Fajardo (both at 0.09 meters), saw reductions under .10 meters. Meanwhile, the water level at Lucchetti in Yauco increased 0.19 meters, and at Caonillas in Utuado the level rose 0.02

meters. Matrullas in Orocovis, Garzas in Adjuntas and Loco in Yauco registered no changes. The NWS in San Juan reported meanwhile that the weather pattern would begin to change Tuesday night and become wetter today, due to the arrival of a vigorous tropical wave, previously identified by the National Hurricane Center as Invest 94L, which will favor an increase in downpours and thunderstorm activity. The NWS specified that precipitable water -- the total amount of water vapor present in a column of air that, if condensed and precipitated, would form a layer of water on the surface -could reach some 2.25 inches, a value higher than normal. “The tropical wave will interact with a deep trough, which will increase the possibility of moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms,” the agency noted. “Models still show uncertainty about how much moisture will reach the islands directly and how much rain will fall. If the current forecast is fulfilled, there will be periods of moderate to locally heavy downpours over eastern Puerto Rico, followed by more activity during the afternoon over the interior and west.” The NWS noted that more intense thunderstorms could also produce frequent lightning strikes and strong gusts of wind. “This rain would be beneficial for areas that currently have dry conditions,” the NWS added. “After the passage of the wave, a drier and more stable air mass will quickly return on Thursday. This air mass will be accompanied by low concentrations of Saharan dust and should remain over the region over the weekend.”
UPR, Spanish university launch exchange initiative By THE STAR STAFF

PREPA mediation team signals it has ‘little left to do,’ pauses work as talks stall By THE STAR STAFF
T
he court‑appointed mediation team overseeing the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s (PREPA) restructuring has effectively stepped back from the process, saying the current circumstances leave it with little to do. In its Twenty‑Third Notice and Report, filed Monday, the mediation team, headed by Shelley C. Chapman (Ret.) and Brendan L. Shannon, delivers its most sober assessment to date of PREPA’s Title III impasse. The mediators said they have paused PJT Partners’ services as financial advisers due to the stalemate. “Unfortunately, there is little for PJT to do in the current circumstances,” the mediation team writes, announcing that it has paused the services of PJT Partners, its financial adviser, effective Aug. 16. The report notes several compounding
Shelley C. Chapman (Ret.), co-leader of the court-appointed mediation team overseeing the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority’s restructuring
factors: Since October 2025, the Financial Oversight and Management Board has oper‑ ated with only four members after attempted removals led to litigation and a preliminary in‑ junction. The mediators note that “uncertainty regarding the composition of the Oversight Board remains” and is likely to persist. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, according to the mediators, will hear oral argument in September on the PREPA bondholders’ administrative ex‑ pense appeal. Meanwhile, discovery and summary‑judgment briefing under the May 2026 schedule will run into Novem‑ ber -- and the mediation team warns that decisions in these matters “are likely to be appealed.” They also noted PREPA’s last certified fiscal plan is from February 2025. No up‑ dated plan has been certified. The oversight board’s adviser, BGC Partners Advisory,
ended its engagement in September 2025. No replacement has been hired. A June 30, 2026 proposal to bondholders “failed to garner support,” and the board has not filed an amended plan of adjustment since. The mediation team’s mandate currently runs through Oct. 31 of this year, but the report offers no indication that meaningful negotiations are underway or imminent. With litigation dominating the calendar, an unsettled oversight board, and no active plan negotiations, the mediators’ message is unmistakable: the PREPA restructuring effort is effectively frozen until external conditions change. For stakeholders, creditors, and Puerto Ri‑ co’s energy sector, the report marks a sobering acknowledgment that the long‑running PREPA case has entered yet another period of drift, with the mediators themselves stepping back until there is something to mediate.
Fiscal board officially explains revocation of temporary generation contract By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Financial Oversight and Man‑ agement Board for Puerto Rico has formally revoked its approval of the Puerto Rico Electric Power Author‑ ity’s (PREPA) temporary emergency gen‑ eration contract with Power Expectations, Enchanted Rock and Reyes Contractor, explaining its reasons for terminating the agreement following allegations that En‑ chanted Rock’s name and signature were used without authorization. In a letter sent Monday to Gov. Jen‑ niffer González Colón, Energy Czar Josué Colón, PREPA Executive Director Mary Zapata and Third‑Party Procure‑ ment Office President Osvaldo Carlo, the
oversight board said it withdrew approval after ERock Inc., the holding company of Enchanted Rock, informed the regulator on Aug. 7 that it “is not a party to the temporary power generation project” and that its signature on the contract was unauthorized. As previously reported by the STAR, the contract, valued at $5.9 billion over 10 years, was intended to deploy 400 megawatts of temporary generation to address Puerto Rico’s ongoing energy emergency. The board said Enchanted Rock’s participation was essential because the other consortium members lacked the experience and financial capacity required for the project. The letter states that Power Expecta‑
tions transferred Enchanted Rock’s interest to Flotek Industries on June 12, two days after the contract was signed, without PREPA’s consent and without notifying the oversight board. PREPA later consented to the substitution on July 31, unaware that Enchanted Rock had already raised con‑ cerns about the signature weeks earlier. The board said it was not informed of the allegations until Aug. 7, when it re‑ ceived a media inquiry. It noted that both the Public‑Private Partnerships Authority (P3A) and 3PPO had been aware of the issue since June 16. The letter also cites additional con‑ cerns, including the absence of a required $1.18 billion performance bond, unmet milestones, and inconsistencies in com‑
munications between PREPA, 3PPO and the board. The oversight board said the procure‑ ment was “fundamentally flawed” and that continuing the project would be in‑ appropriate given the lack of progress. It urged PREPA and the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau to pursue alternative measures to address the island’s generation shortfall, including repairs to existing units and acceleration of other projects. The board’s decision follows earlier referrals by the P3A and the energy czar to the island Justice Department and federal authorities for independent review of the allegations. PREPA has not yet commented publicly on the termination directive.
Inspector general finds irregularities at Agricultural Insurance Corp. By THE STAR STAFF
T
he Puerto Rico Office of the Inspector Gen‑ eral (OIG) on Tuesday reported significant operational, administrative, fiscal, and technological failures at the Agricultural Insur‑ ance Corporation (CSA by its initials in Span‑ ish), issuing 21 findings indicating widespread noncompliance across the agency. The intervention, which covered July 1, 2022
through May 1, 2026, comes as the Financial Oversight and Management Board continues pressing public entities to strengthen controls, improve record‑keeping, and comply with con‑ tracting and reporting requirements. According to the OIG, the CSA’s internal processes for managing farmer policy files, government contracts, invoice pre‑intervention, fiscal records, and information systems showed persistent deficiencies. Auditors found incom‑
plete documentation in farmer policy files, miss‑ ing fiscal records, irregularities in professional service contracts, and vulnerabilities in the agency’s technology and operational continuity. A physical inspection of the CSA’s file storage area revealed humidity and mold on ceilings and walls, a fire alarm system that appeared non‑ functional, and a lack of equipment to control temperature and moisture. Auditors also noted the absence of a log tracking who accesses of‑
ficial records — a basic safeguard required for the custody of public documents. From a sample of 201 files out of 15,278, the OIG determined that CSA records frequently lacked required forms and supporting docu‑ ments. The agency’s weak controls, the report states, create conditions for errors, irregularities, legal exposure and future complications in farm evaluations, policy issuance and claims processing.

Family presses for information about fatal ICE shooting in Maine By MAIA SPOTO and MURRAY CARPENTER
T
he Department of Homeland Security said its inspector general would investigate an agent’s decision to open fire on a Colombian immigrant last month in Maine. But scant information about the inquiry has frustrated the victim’s family. The man, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was killed by an immigration agent during a July 13 confrontation in the coastal city of Biddeford. Neither the DHS nor Immigration and Customs Enforcement has said publicly whether Durán Guerrero, 25, was the target of the enforcement operation. But the DHS defended the officer who opened fire, saying he had done so while “fearing for public safety.” In an effort to draw attention to the many unanswered questions, Democratic members of Congress held a public forum Monday in Biddeford and were joined by Durán Guerrero’s relatives in demanding more information. The auditorium where the forum was held was packed, with about 200 people, many of them wearing T-shirts and carrying placards critical of ICE. The crowd punctuated the lawmakers’ comments with raucous applause and occasional chants of “ICE out” and “Abolish ICE.” Rep. Chellie Pingree, D-Maine, who organized the forum, said that the lack of video
An impromptu memorial for Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero at the intersection where he was fatally shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Biddeford, Maine, July 14, 2026. (Christopher Capozziello/The New York Times) footage was concerning. “If there were active body cameras on every law enforcement member who was participating there, we wouldn’t be looking at some scratchy videos from one store that’s over here, or one person that’s standing in their doorway that’s trying to get it,” Pingree said at a news conference after the hearing. “We would actually know every moment that’s happened at the scene.”
The shooting in Maine came less than a week after a fatal immigration encounter in Houston, and the two deaths prompted a fresh wave of attention on aggressive enforcement tactics by federal agents carrying out President Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign. Ben Gideon, a lawyer representing the family of Durán Guerrero, said at the news conference that the man’s partner, Karolina Rojas, has been interviewed by state investigators but had not been contacted by any of the federal agencies involved. “Any reasonable investigation would include interviewing the family and eyewitnesses,” Gideon said. The DHS had said that agents were monitoring what they believed to be the home of someone who was in the country illegally and had been issued a removal order. The DHS and the Department of Justice declined to answer direct questions about whether the killing was being investigated. The Justice Department referred the question to the DHS, which said that its inspector general would investigate the discharge of the agent’s firearm but said nothing about investigating Durán Guerrero’s death. Immigration agents have shot at more than 20 people during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, including many who
were in vehicles, some of them fatally. Durán Guerrero had a pending asylum application and a valid work permit, and no removal order, Pingree said. Durán Guerrero had worked as a food delivery driver and a cleaner at a veterinary clinic. He and his partner had a 3-year-old daughter. Maine Gov. Janet Mills said at the hearing that she was heartbroken by the shooting but that she was confident that the state attorney general, Aaron Frey, would conduct a thorough investigation. Mayor Liam LaFountain of Biddeford also addressed the officials. He said that Biddeford has been devastated by the shooting and that there has been no federal support to deal with the aftermath. “The authority was federal,” LaFountain said. “The burden has been local.” Omar Durán, Durán Guerrero’s father, said he feels “a deep pain” when Durán Guerrero’s daughter asks why her father doesn’t come home from work. “The death of Johan Sebastián, under those conditions, at the hands of ICE, fills our community with fear and uncertainty,” he said. “That is why I ask only of God and of the justice system that my son’s case be brought to light, along with the case of the many others who have had to go through something like this.”
As Lala lashes Hawaii, the Atlantic hurricane season remains calm. So far. By JUDSON JONES
W
hen the Pacific is overly active with tropical cyclones like Lala, the Atlantic typically remains quiet. That has been the case so far this hurricane season, with more activity in the Pacific and less in the Atlantic — but in the public imagination, one major storm can upset that relative quiet. A little over two months into the Atlantic hurricane season, the United States has largely been spared. There have been only three Atlantic storms that have grown strong enough to merit names: Arthur, Bertha and, just last week, Cristobal. That was about what meteorologists expected when they said this year’s hurricane season would probably have fewer storms than most other seasons. In a report this month, experts said there would be seven to 13 named storms, one fewer than they predicted in May. Of those, two to six could become hurricanes, and of those hurricanes, at most two could
reach the major hurricane threshold, they said. A typical Atlantic season has 14 named storms, including seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. This forecast is predicated on the near certainty that an El Nino weather pattern will limit activity. The global phenomenon is expected to persist into the fall, providing a stabilizing force that may act as a lid on Atlantic activity. “When El Nino emerges, it usually becomes the dominant factor in total hurricane season activity, and this El Nino continues to get stronger every month,” Matt Rosencrans, lead hurricane season forecaster, said this month during the updated announcement from the National Weather Service. But Ken Graham, the weather service director, reminded people in May that El Nino’s effect wasn’t certain: Each season could unfold differently. What the public perceives as a “busy” hurricane season isn’t necessarily the total number of storms; it is where they make land-
fall. And that perception “is a very U.S.-centric thing,” said Phil Klotzbach, a researcher at Colorado State University. He noted that while last year’s hurricane season was above average by nearly every scientific metric, many in the United States might remember it as being quiet because few major storms hit the U.S. coast. But there were three Category 5 hurricanes in 2025, including Melissa, whose winds and flooding caused devastation in Jamaica. The statistical likelihood of a major U.S. landfall is even lower this year, but it is not zero. Memorable Atlantic storms can still break through El Nino. In the world of meteorology, El Nino is neither good nor bad — it is just a natural shift in global weather patterns. Across the Atlantic Ocean, it is a formidable opponent for developing storms. Strong El Nino patterns in the Pacific produce high-altitude changes in the Atlantic wind that can shred developing hurricanes before they form.
But not always. In 2023, an El Nino was present, but Atlantic Ocean temperatures were at record highs. This created a tug of war between El Nino’s wind changes and the ocean’s raw energy. That season eventually produced 20 named storms, far exceeding initial predictions. This year, Atlantic Ocean temperatures have been near their historical averages. If that holds, this year may mirror 2015, which had only 11 named storms. Even in that relatively quiet year, though, Hurricane Joaquin damaged islands in the central and southeastern Bahamas and sank the cargo ship El Faro. And although 2018 was another mostly quiet El Niño year, Hurricane Michael still hit the Florida coast. Even in an environment that should have been hostile to the formation of a hurricane, Michael found a small pocket of calm conditions that allowed it to intensify into a Category 5, wiping out homes along the Panhandle.

The rush to pin a scholar’s awful death on the media By MICHELLE GOLDBERG
L
ast year, Jack Grove, a reporter for Times Higher Education, a British magazine, was preparing an article about plagiarism allegations against star academic Jason Arday. It would have been a big story because Arday, who in 2023 became Cambridge’s youngest-ever Black professor, was a minor celebrity, thanks in part to his seemingly extraordinary biography. Among other things, Arday said that he’d gotten his Ph.D. despite severe autism that left him nonverbal until he was 11 and unable to read until he was 18. He’d claimed to have run 600 miles in six days, which would have made him one of the world’s most accomplished ultramarathoners. Grove sent Arday three emails with questions about both his work and his history. Arday responded by hiring one of Britain’s leading defamation firms — one known, among other things, for trying to quash investigations into Scientology — and reporting Grove to the police for harassment. As Grove later wrote, an officer told him not to contact Arday again because it was affecting the professor’s mental health. The magazine, fearing expensive litigation, killed the piece. But the story didn’t go away. It made its way to Nathan Cofnas, a former Cambridge research associate who’d been fired for racist blog posts. Cofnas published his review of Arday’s intellectual misdeeds last month, and it exploded in the British press, particularly on the right, which saw the scandal as an indictment not just of Arday or Cambridge, but of academic diversity policies writ large. Cambridge announced an internal investigation, and Arday resigned.

But the coverage, much of it gleefully vicious, continued, in part because of the publication of Arday’s new memoir, “Great and Unfortunate Things,” this month. On Friday Arday was found dead in what was widely assumed to be a suicide. In the wake of Arday’s death, many on the left are blaming the media.

Emergency responders found Hayden Panettiere in cardiac arrest By DERRICK BRYSON TAYLOR and MATT STEVENS
A
preliminary investigation into the death of Hayden Panettiere, a 36-year-old actress known for her work in the TV shows “Nashville” and “Heroes,” did not produce evidence of “foul play or suspicious circumstances,” the Greenville, South Carolina, Police Department said in a statement Monday. Emergency responders found a woman in cardiac arrest Sunday at an apartment complex west of downtown Greenville, the Greenville County Coroner’s Office said in a statement Monday. Despite advanced cardiac life support measures, the statement said, the woman was pronounced dead at 2:32 p.m. She was later identified as Panettiere. The cardiac arrest appeared to have been caused by a drug overdose, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss an continuing investigation. An autopsy performed on Monday showed no signs of trauma that contributed to the death, the statement by the coroner’s office said. The cause and manner of death remain pending, and it could take up to three months for the full autopsy results to be returned. The Police Department said that an acquaintance of Panettiere’s called 911 just before 2 p.m. Sunday but did not
disclose the identity of the caller. The person with knowledge of the situation said that Panettiere was with Brian Hickerson, a former boyfriend, at the time of her death. It was unclear whether he called 911. Attempts to reach Hickerson were not immediately successful. A lawyer listed for him in a recent court filing did not immediately respond to a request for comment. According to Panettiere’s memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” which she published this year, she met Hickerson in 2018 in Los Angeles. The two dated on and off for several years. Court records show that in 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring Panettiere. On Monday, at least three police cars were parked near the apartment complex, the Judson Mill Lofts, as a news media helicopter hovered above. Nick Simmons, the property’s manager, said in a statement that the complex was “cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities.” He added, “Out of respect for the individual involved, their family and the privacy of our residents, we are not able to provide any additional information or comment at this time.” Panettiere first appeared onscreen as an infant, acting in a commercial when she was 11 months old. Her breakout role came in 2000, when she played a coach’s daughter in the Denzel Washington-led “Remember the Titans.”
She went on to find acclaim in a pair of TV series: as a high school cheerleader with a supernatural ability to regrow her body parts in “Heroes” (from 2006 to 2010) and as a rising music star in “Nashville” (which ran from 2012 to 2018). Panettiere also appeared in two sequels of the “Scream” horror movies. It was little secret that Panettiere had struggled with mental health issues and drug and alcohol abuse. She told The New York Times in 2023 that at one point in her life she would regularly wake up shaking. When she was not drinking alcohol, she said, she was taking opioids in hopes of not drinking. Panettiere also said that she had suffered from body dysmorphia as a result of invasive tabloid press coverage when she was a teenager.

Nasdaq slides, yields elevated as Mideast conflict fears grow
U
.S. government bond yields eased slightly on Tuesday, though longer-dated yields remained near multi-year highs after the 30-year Treasury yield earlier touched a level not seen since 2007. The move came as fears of an escalating Middle East conflict stoked inflation worries and weighed on stocks. Oil prices were slightly higher, gaining for a third straight session, as prospects for a U.S.-Iranian peace deal dimmed after Tehran said it would adopt a more offensive stance and Washington ruled out extending a ceasefire deal. U.S. crude rose 0.82% to $85.17 a barrel and Brent rose to $91.37 per barrel, up 0.55% on the day. Yields have risen despite a recent run of soft U.S. economic data easing concerns about an imminent Federal Reserve rate hike. Traders now see just a 35% chance of a hike at the Fed’s September meeting but 68% odds of an increase by December. A resurgence in inflation could renew expectations for a faster pace of rate hikes. “We’re living in this world where we’re going to have supply shock after supply shock,” said Will Compernolle, macro strategist at FHN Financial. The costs of the ongoing Iran conflict are also adding to fears over the U.S. fiscal trajectory. The yield on the U.S. 30-year Treasury bond was last down 2.32 basis points at 5.2868%, after reaching 5.3371%, the highest since 2007. Benchmark 10-year note yields fell 1.6 basis points to 4.708% and got to 4.7478%, the highest since January 2025. [US/] The rise in U.S. yields coincided with Japanese government bond yields climbing to 30-year highs, raising concerns among analysts that as Japanese yields become more attractive, domestic investors — particularly pension funds and insurance companies — could begin shifting capital out of U.S. debt and into Japanese bonds. Such a shift would add further upward pressure on Treasury yields. Japan’s 10-year bond yield was hovering just below the 3% threshold for the first time since the mid-1990s, while euro zone bond yields also sat near multi-year highs. Wall Street’s main indexes hit their lowest in two weeks, pressured by losses in heavyweight technology stocks. “The yields are troubling people because it portends

Facing quagmire in Iran, Trump turns to a familiar face: North Korea’s Kim Jong Un By DAVID E. SANGER and ANTON TROIANOVSKI
T
he last time President Donald Trump vowed to halt a country’s nuclear weapons program, he held three face-to-face meetings with Kim Jong Un of North Korea, declared that the two men had developed a “great relationship” and walked away emptyhanded. That was in Trump’s first term. Not only did the diplomatic effort fail, but Kim immediately hit the accelerator on his program and today possesses roughly 60 nuclear weapons, by some estimates, as well as missiles that appear capable of reaching the United States — exactly the combination Trump had vowed to dismantle. For months now, proliferation experts have questioned whether Trump could also end up walking away from his efforts to check Iran’s nuclear program — especially now that he appears to be more focused on getting the Strait of Hormuz open than on dealing with Iran’s stockpiles of uranium, which are buried under rubble after the United States bombed them in June 2025. Stymied in Iran, Trump is increasingly turning his sights back to North Korea, even though analysts see little hope of quickly dismantling that country’s growing nuclear arsenal. Trump’s social media declaration Sunday night, praising Kim and publicly ordering Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to diminish the United States’ role in an annual military exercise with South Korea, a U.S. ally in the Pacific, appeared intended to signal that he wants to resume negotiations. A day later, it remained unclear just how the Pentagon would scale back its role in the 11-day exercise, and a one-line statement sent to reporters by the Pentagon press office Monday afternoon did not provide any clarity. “The Department of War is actively working on executing the commander in chief’s directive,” the statement said, using the Trump administration’s name for the Department of Defense. Robert Litwak, a scholar at George Washington University who has written about the nuclear programs in both North Korea and Iran, called the contrast between Trump’s approaches to those two countries “an incredible tale of two rogue states.” “We’re at war with Iran, a nuclear-threshold state,” he said. “But with North Korea, we are placating a dictator who can target the U.S. homeland with nuclear weapons.”
President Donald Trump, left, walks with Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s leader, on the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea, at Panmunjom, June 30, 2019. The last time President Trump vowed to halt a country’s nuclear weapons program, he held three face-to-face meetings with Kim Jong-un, declared that the two men had developed a “great relationship” and walked away empty-handed. (Erin Schaff/The New York Times) Trump’s outburst was also aimed at punishing the South Koreans for declining to join in the war against Iran, a position that deeply angered Trump. It was a point he made in the same social media post and reiterated to reporters in the Oval Office on Monday. The president has also been angry that Seoul has been slow to deliver on what the White House believes is a $350 billion promise for new investments, including in shipbuilding. Last October, Trump visited South Korea and celebrated its future investments in the United States, including a promised multibillion-dollar expansion of Samsung’s chipmaking plant in Texas. “Trump defaults back to the complaint about South Korean free-riding” on the U.S. troop presence on the Korean Peninsula, said Scott A. Snyder, the president and CEO of the Korea Economic Institute of America, “and he uses the security relationship as a lever to put more pressure on the South Korean government.” Looming over the tensions is Trump’s inability to extract the United States from the Iran war. He has hinted at his eagerness in recent months to move on from that conflict and return to dealing with Kim — who indulged Trump’s desire for leader-to-leader talks with those summits during Trump’s first term. President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea said in June that Trump appeared to want to resume talks with Kim, and Trump posted
a picture of himself with the North Korean leader on social media at least twice in recent months. The North Korean nuclear program has been a deep concern since the late 1980s, long before Iran’s nuclear program was on the radar. In 1994, during a crisis triggered by North Korea’s expulsion of international nuclear inspectors, the Clinton administration debated a military strike on the North Korean facility at Yongbyon. But it held back, and later that year, former President Jimmy Carter struck a deal with Kim Il Sung, the grandfather of the current North Korean leader, to end the nuclear program in return for help building civilian nuclear reactors. It all fell apart, and subsequent efforts to bring the North Korean program under control failed. In 2006, the North conducted its first nuclear test, and followed with five more, the most recent in 2017. The next year, having labeled Kim “Little Rocket Man,” Trump met the North Korean leader in Singapore. After their encounter, he told a New York Times reporter that he expected that the North would dismantle its program fast. “It’s going to go very quickly,” he said after the summit. “I really believe that it’s going to go fast. And it is a very substantial arsenal. There’s no question about it.” But while Trump recalls the encounters fondly — during the first term, he would bring out Kim’s letters to him and read excerpts to visitors in the Oval Office — they went down
in history as a diplomatic failure. A second summit, in Vietnam, ended with a collapse of the talks. Trump went into the sessions illprepared, his national security adviser at the time, John Bolton, said later, and the effort fell apart when Kim refused to dismantle facilities outside the main enrichment and reprocessing center at Yongbyon. Some fear the same thing could happen again. “Another Trump-Kim summit, which is what the president seems to be angling for, could be a disaster,” said Joel S. Wit, a former State Department diplomat who was involved in early talks with the North and wrote a history of the effort, “Fallout: The Inside Story of America’s Failure to Disarm North Korea.” “Trump doesn’t seem to realize that the Kim Jong Un of today isn’t interested in better relations with the United States,” Wit said. “He is hellbent on keeping his nuclear weapons, sending troops to Ukraine to support his Russian ally and threatening South Korea.” On Monday, critics of Trump’s foreign policy quickly attacked the president for undercutting a key alliance. Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island, the top Democrat on the Armed Services Committee, said Trump had made “another inane, haphazard decision” that punished South Korea “for no reason beyond Trump’s ego.” Victor D. Cha, a Georgetown University professor who worked on Asia policy in the George W. Bush White House, described Trump’s social media outburst as a symptom, at least in part, of the president’s frustration over Iran. He noted that Trump’s charm offensive directed at Kim came as the president tried to maintain his hard line against Tehran, a study in contrasts in Trump’s approach to perhaps the world’s two most vexing nuclear proliferation challenges. “He’s kind of trending in two opposite directions,” Cha said. “He’s trending in the direction of pragmatically negotiating with a nuclear North Korea. But in the case of Iran, he’s taken an absolutist stance.” Trump defended his approach to North Korea in the Oval Office on Monday. Asked by a reporter whether he was prioritizing the interests of U.S. adversaries over allies, the president shot back, “I’m making it much safer.” “Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect,” the president added. “I understand him. He understands me.” But Kim is also closely watching Trump’s war on Iran, analysts say. That war has shown North Korea, Cha said, “that they are right to pursue nuclear weapons to avoid a military strike.”

Young women joined protests in India. The hate followed. By ANUPREETA DAS

hiya Ahir went viral after an image circulated of her blocking a police van that was carrying detained protesters last month during India’s ongoing youth agitation. A vast army of online trolls has stalked her since. They called it a play for attention by Ahir, 27, a Mumbai-based model and actor. They insinuated that she sold sexually explicit content behind a paywall on Instagram. They circulated a video of her diving into the sea in a bikini. They flooded her social media accounts with slurs and rape threats. Ahir has chosen to rise above it. “You’re not scared of someone who is telling you online that ‘I’m going to rip you apart the day I see you,’” she said. “I’m trying not to reply to any of them, just letting them do their thing and show their face to the world.” Thousands of young women have participated in nationwide protests demanding accountability from the government for a flawed education system. But in the two months since the demonstrations started, they have been doxed and bombarded online by people who have called them immoral, threatened sexual abuse and acid attacks, and used artificial intelligence to create demeaning images. A majority of the attacks have come from accounts, many anonymous, that push Hindu right-wing ideology and pitch themselves as custodians of religious morality. But high-profile politicians, commentators and outraged individuals have chimed in. In a series of Instagram messages, Kangana Ranaut, a well-known Bollywood actress and member of parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Hindu nationalist political party of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called out a “new generation of so-called Westernized Indian women.” She labeled

them “Generation Gutter,” saying they had “nothing to offer the system” but were too “corrupt and ugly” to be “homemakers.” There have been other consequences for women who joined the protests. Police officers visited the ancestral home of a student activist and protester, and suggested to her family that she should focus on her studies. Another protest leader had ink thrown in her face. A 15-year-old girl who had used profanities in talking about Modi during the protests later appeared in a video online apologizing. In the aftermath of the protests, Modi called it a cultural shock that women protesters had used profanity, without remarking on the young men chanting alongside them. “How can the daughters of this country use this kind of language?” he said in an Instagram reel. Danish Ali, a student activist and doctoral student in Delhi, said police officers showed up at the houses of Préstamos Personales de $150 hasta $5,000 her relatives in Bandarbarru, Tasas de los préstamos otorgados la semana her ancestral village in que termina el sábado 15 de Agosto de 2026 the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. was ongoing. Authorities also called her father, telling him that Ali should “focus on her studies.” Ali called it a “subtle threat” that tied her activities to her well-being. “All this targeting of women offline and online happened because women coming to the protest site, women openly critiquing the government, women cheerfully making fun of the prime minister, even using profanity, that was something which could not be tolerated,” she said. Ali, 24, celebrated the fact that so many young girls and women joined protests across the nation — sometimes defying their parents or skipping school to do so. But, she said, it was “problematic to see” the hateful targeting of women at a protest demanding education reform, given that many women already have to fight for the chance to go to school. That the attacks emanated from the Hindu right, which calls for a nation based on a religion that worships numerous goddesses, struck Ali as especially contradictory. “There is this binary that is created,” she said. “Either you are a saint, or you are a slut.” Ahir, who has appeared in music videos and worked in theater, has become a central figure because her lifestyle challenges a deeply entrenched patriarchal system that confines women to certain roles and behaviors.
As she made news for defiantly putting her hand on the front of a police van in Mumbai, demanding that the officers show legal papers before she stepped aside, a section of the internet bubbled up with comments on her physical appearance: the nature of her clothing, the angle of her body. Ahir said she had barely begun processing the unexpected attention that her act had brought her before “the hate started coming.” The hoodie she was wearing, tucked into the back of her sweatpants, led to comments that she was showing off her body because she had her hip thrust out while leaning toward the bus, Ahir said. Other messages accused her of staging the episode. “They’re trying to demonize me and discredit us women from the entire protest,” she said. The higher her profile rose, the more furiously the slander came, mostly in the form of comments on social media. Some insinuated, falsely, that 149 rupees (about $1.50) — the monthly subscription fee she charges for early access to her Instagram posts — would get them adult content, Ahir said. She worried that by constantly maligning her image, the trolls would discredit her enough that she would lose her newfound platform to demand accountability from the government on core issues like education and employment. On Aug. 5, Ahir was one of several protesters invited to join Rahul Gandhi, a Congress member and the leader of the opposition in the lower house of parliament, to speak at a news conference about online harassment. She wants to be a role model for young girls and women. But in encouraging them to raise their voices, Ahir landed on the conundrum that millions of women in past generations have felt: how to dress and behave publicly in a patriarchal society in order to be taken seriously and treated with respect. “These things are finding their way into the way I think about myself — my thong is visible in this, too much cleavage,” Ahir said. “Why am I so scared of people seeing who I am and what I do?” Ahir, who started modeling at 21, said she was trying to stop second-guessing herself. “Do I really have to wear a sari if I want to stand up for my country?”

Sick of AI slop? So are tech giants. By TIFFANY TSU
T
he worst of artificial intelligence slop has cluttered Google searches with recipes for glue-topped pizza, Amazon listings with sham biographies and Facebook feeds with images of Shrimp Jesus. The digital sewage heap has sprawled across tech platforms, cheapening meaningful content and polluting the information ecosystem, as chatbots and video generators continue to advance. Now, Silicon Valley wants to take out the trash. Spotify said it removed 75 million bulk uploads, duplicate songs and other “spammy” tracks last year — a sizable chunk of its total portfolio. LinkedIn said in July that “AI slop is a top priority for all of us” and developed a button for users to report it. Researchers from YouTube’s parent company, Google, described how a video service wiped 130,000 channels of low-quality content off its platform over six months. Across the internet, tech companies are undertaking a generative waste detox, overwhelmed in many cases by the same slop first made possible by their own AI tools. Mobile messaging apps, restaurant review sites, scholarly archives and dating services are all rooting out or downplaying junk generated by AI — many relying on the same technology to pull off the purge. People are tiring of AI’s effect on the environment and its pressure on jobs and mental health. AI slop is just another “festering wound,” said Aidan Walker, a content creator and researcher studying online trends for the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a global affairs think tank. “Users have gradually gotten more and more upset about it,” he said. “The climate of opinion has now recognizably shifted, so these companies are finally confronting these problems.” Generative AI can produce increasingly realistic images, audio and videos, but only some of it qualifies as slop. Tech companies are largely targeting the kind of low-grade clickbait that is easy to make, spread, consume and forget — the fast fashion edging out couture, the pink slime subsuming the steak. Unchecked, the synthetic swamp online could “crowd out human creativity, corrode cultural value and destabilize public discourse,” European researchers wrote last year. Slop has become so prevalent that dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster chose it as its word of the year in 2025. Deezer, a French streaming service, said this spring that nearly half the tracks updated to its system each day were artificially generated, many of them never heard by users. AI generates more than a third of what is uploaded to Apple Music. Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, said late last year that it would soon “be more practical” to trace “real media than fake media.” His observation came not long after Meta, Instagram’s parent company, rolled out an all-AI
Spotify, LinkedIn and others are trying to dig out of a digital sewage heap full of low-quality content made with artificial intelligence. (Lia Sued C./The New York Times) video stream derided by many as a showcase for slop. Many tech companies now trying to manage AI slop are also the ones enabling it. In July, Meta promised to support a European pact to make AI-generated content more identifiable via detection, labeling and tagging. That same month, the company also released an image generator that automatically opted in public Instagram accounts as a reference for the tool. (Meta removed the feature after three days of backlash.) “AI slop is a double-edged sword in that a lot of these platforms experienced upticks in engagement as a result of it,” said Paul Shovlin, an expert in AI at Ohio University. “But then, it got to a point where it became a liability because there’s so much flotsam and jetsam that it’s now hard for users to find the kind of quality that they’re looking for.” Google, for example, has gone all in on AI, linking its Gemini model to its email, maps and travel services and search. More than 20% of the initial short videos on YouTube served to new users are AI-generated slop, according to an experiment conducted last year by Kapwing, an online video editor that is powered by AI.

One of the most popular YouTube slop channels, Kapwing estimated, earned $4.25 million annually. (It has since been suspended from a YouTube monetization program.) Neal Mohan, YouTube’s CEO, wrote in a blog post that “managing AI slop” was a top priority this year. Other companies are turning to a grab bag of strategies to address AI slop, including rallying their own patrons to help identify it. In October, Pinterest updated its system to allow users to limit how many AI-generated posts they see. TikTok said it was testing a feature in the United States that lets people dial up or down the amount of visible AI content. (The company also said it had automatically labeled more than 3 billion AI-generated videos.) TikTok removed more than 377,000 videos in the first three months of the year for violating its AI policies. AI was used to create nearly half the posts with more than 50 words on X, Elon Musk’s social media platform, according to Pangram, an AI detection startup. To deal with “a tremendous amount of AI slop & reply spam,” the social media platform this year banned apps that effectively encourage bots to post by paying for content, wrote Nikita Bier, who was X’s head of product until this month. Chris Best, CEO of Substack, wrote last month that “it’s getting harder to tell what’s real on the internet,” and that “platforms that reward fakeness will create a race to the bottom.” The newsletter platform announced its own AI detection tool for users, powered by Pangram, which is designed to scan replies, comments and posts longer than 100 words and decide whether they were likely written by hand or with AI help. Some newsletter writers complained that the tool mistook posts written by humans as AI-generated, did not account for AI’s potential role in the creative process and put undue pressure on authors to defend their reputations against an opaque metric. This spring, Camille François and nearly two dozen other AI experts convened at a Slop Salon event in Menlo Park, California, where they discussed the difficulty of classifying, and thus managing, AI slop. “The hodgepodge of tactics is a symptom that we’re looking at a systemic problem with our information environment and not just a bad class of content called slop that we can just define and remove,” François, who studies harmful digital technologies at Columbia University, said in an interview. “AI is a creativity tool at the end of the day, and multifaceted, and platforms that handle this in a poor way will see people walk and go to other places.”

6 exercises physical therapists wish everyone did to age well By DANIELLE FRIEDMAN
I
n many cases, aches and pains can be a reflection of your daily routines. Habits like sitting at a desk all day, looking down at your phone or even straining to pick your socks up off the floor can lead to a body that feels creaky, tight and sore. Making time to practice good movement habits can keep you feeling limber and strong. Physical therapists know this all too well. “People come in with the same problems over and over again,” said Theresa Marko, a physical therapist in New York City. She often finds herself recommending the same exercises as solutions, she said — exercises that, for example, “counteract, you know, going to see ‘The Odyssey’ for three hours.” We asked physical therapists to share the exercises they wish everyone incorporated into their fitness routines. Here are six that came up again and again. 1. Standing on one leg Good balance is important for both fitness and everyday life, but it deteriorates with age, unless you’re “really deliberate about practicing it,” said Conor Nordengren, a physical therapist in Wellesley, Massachusetts. One of the simplest ways to do this is by regularly standing on one leg, experts said. This simple exercise can “strengthen all the muscles in your foot, your ankle, your knee, your thigh,” Marko said. It also helps to build stability — not only in your legs, but also in your hips, pelvis and lower back. “I stand on one leg in the kitchen, waiting for coffee, waiting for the elevator,” she added. If standing on one leg is challenging for you, lightly rest your hand on a chair, a wall or a countertop until you feel stable enough to let go. If the exercise feels easy, close your eyes. Stand on each leg for at least 30 seconds every day. 2. Hip hinges The ability to properly bend forward, or hinge, at the hips is useful both for daily tasks, like picking things up off the floor, and for exercises like deadlifts and kettlebell swings. But many people struggle with hip hinges, said Dhara Shah, a physical therapist at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta. It’s common to round your back and lock your knees when you bend over, which puts pressure on your spine and can lead to pain or injury. Regularly practicing hip hinges can also strengthen your glutes and hamstrings. To do a hip hinge, send your hips backward while bringing your chest forward. Keep your back straight, your shoulders pulled slightly back, your abdominal muscles pulled toward your belly button and your knees softly bent. Practice this movement daily, doing two sets of 15 hinges. 3. Sit-to-stands The act of sitting down and then standing back up may seem simple, but with age, it can become increasingly dif-

(Bee Trofort/The New York Times) ficult without proper strength and stability. Making time to practice “sit-to-stand” exercises will pay off by strengthening your quads, glutes, hamstrings, calves and core muscles, and improve your ability to do lunges and squats, the experts said. To do a sit-to-stand, lower yourself into a chair and stand back up in a slow, controlled way. If this feels challenging, practice it several times a day until it feels easier. If it already feels easy, lower your body even more slowly and just barely tap your butt to the seat before slowly standing up again. The lower the surface, the more challenging it will be. “That control piece makes it a little harder,” Shah said. Do two sets of 20 repetitions several times a week. For more of a challenge, do it while holding weights or a kettlebell. 4. Dead bugs with diaphragmatic breathing Many people feel the effects of sitting for long periods in their neck, shoulders or back, but the problem often begins in their innermost core muscles, said Carrie Pagliano, a physical therapist in Arlington, Virginia. “With a lot of these issues, people are just missing fundamental strength,” she said. When your core is weak, your neck and shoulders often compensate to keep you upright. Physical therapists recommended doing the dead bug exercise while practicing diaphragmatic breathing to build core strength at the deepest level. To do a dead bug, lie on your back and raise your legs at a 90-degree angle, then raise your arms straight toward the ceiling. With your spine pressed into the floor, slowly straighten and lower your left leg while also lowering your right arm, until both are fully extended. Return to the starting position, then repeat with the opposite sides. While extending, slowly exhale through your mouth to contract your deep core. While returning to the starting position, inhale and feel your belly expand. Do two sets of eight exercises a few times a week.
This breath work helps “stabilize your core from the inside out,” said Alicia Ferriere, a physical therapist in Maplewood, New Jersey. Together with the dead bugs, it can help support your spine and relieve aches in your neck and shoulders. 5. Wall pushups Pushups allow you to practice lifting your body weight, which is essential for staying independent as you age and getting up if you fall, Nordengren said. They primarily strengthen the chest, shoulders, arms and core. Unless you’ve regularly been doing pushups from the ground, experts recommended doing them with your hands on a stable, raised surface such as a wall or a countertop. As you build strength, you can gradually lower the surface until you reach the ground. “I’ll very rarely have people do them from the floor right away,” Nordengren said, especially since “a lot of people struggle with the technique.” Start in a plank position, with your back flat and your feet pressed into the floor. Next, engage your core and slightly tuck your tailbone underneath you to prevent your back from arching. Bend your elbows into a 45-degree angle, while slowly lowering your chest, then push yourself back up. Imagine that you are pushing the floor away, Nordengren said, and be sure to reach your arms long at the top. Do two sets of 10 reps twice a week. 6. Cat-cows To counter the effects of sitting or standing for long periods of time, many physical therapists recommended the cat-cow stretch, in which you alternate between arching and curving your back while on all fours. Take a few deep breaths in each position to feel a deeper stretch. This classic stretch can help relieve stiffness in your spine, shoulders and neck and improve your mobility. When you’re in an all-fours position, you can limber up other body parts, too, Ferriere said. Try reaching forward with each arm or stretching each leg out behind you and doing a few hip circles. Ultimately, these exercises are “giving you a little extra buffer to live your life,” Nordengren said, so your body is strong, steady and prepared for the unexpected.

Morgan Smith named 2026 LPSF Pitcher of the Year By THE STAR STAFF
M
organ Smith, the star hurler for the champion Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande, was selected as the 2026 Pitcher of the Year for the Women’s Premier Softball League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) after winning a close vote among sports journalists, team owners and managers. Smith accumulated 51 points, edging out Yeraldine Carrión of the Caribeñas of Salinas, who finished second with 48
points. Odhi Vázquez of the Bravas of Cidra received 33 points; Alondra Pérez of the Valencianas of Juncos, 32; Kennedy Byrd of the Leonas of Ponce, four; and Alexis Bermúdez of Juncos, three. Smith, an import player from Phoenix, Arizona, was one of the most dominant figures in the pitching ring during the regular season. The former Rutgers and Louisiana State standout posted a 6-1 record with a 0.72 ERA in seven starts, completing all seven games and recording two shutouts.
In 43.2 innings pitched, she allowed just five earned runs and 26 hits, without surrendering a single home run. She also struck out 41 batters, walked 18, and held her opponents to a .168 batting average. Her performance was a key part of the Prodigiosas’ historic season, as they finished with a 13-5 record, tied with the Bravas and eventual runner-up Valencianas for the best record in the regular season. Sabana Grande went on to win the franchise’s first championship.

Tommy John, pitcher who gave his name to career-saving surgery, dies at 83 By BRUCE WEBER
T
ommy John, a canny left-handed pitcher who won nearly 300 major-league games, more than half of them after recovering from the innovative elbow surgery that came to be known by his name and has since saved the careers of dozens of players, died on Saturday at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. He was 83. The cause was bladder cancer, his wife, Cheryl John, said. John pitched for 26 seasons; only Nolan Ryan lasted longer in the big leagues in the modern era. At the height of his success — and after his recovery from the risky surgery — he won 37 games for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1977 to 1978 and then 43 for the New York Yankees from 1979 to 1980, for a cumulative four-year record of 80-35. A four-time All-Star who played in three World Series (though he was never on a championship team) and three times led the American League in shutouts, John won 288 games overall — the second-largest total for any pitcher not in the Hall of Fame and more wins than many who are in the hall. In 1974, the year that derailed his career — and, it can fairly be said, changed baseball — John was in his 12th major-league season and his third with the Dodgers. It was in Los Angeles that John had come into his own. Unlike his previous teams, the Dodgers had no qualms about the relative lack of juice on his fastball and urged him to rely on it. In his first two seasons with the team, he went 27-12, and at the All-Star break in 1974 he was 13-3, the best record in the National League. On July 17, however, in the third inning
of a game against the Montreal Expos, John threw a pitch to a hitter named Hal Breeden. “As I came forward and released the ball,” he recalled in a 1991 memoir, “T.J.: My 26 Years in Baseball,” written with Dan Valenti, “I felt a kind of nothingness, as if my arm weren’t there, then I heard a ‘pop’ from inside my arm, and the ball just blooped up to the plate.” After years of wear and tear from hurling the baseball, John had torn the ulnar collateral ligament on the inside of his left elbow. “The only thing holding my elbow together was the skin and the nerve running through the joint,” he wrote. “The ligament was torn in two. The muscles on the inside of the arm were ripped loose and were sitting two inches out of place, toward my wrist. The ulnar nerve was badly bruised.” At the time, any surgery on the arm, the elbow or the shoulder of a pitcher was rare and career-threatening, and John’s injury was so severe that his only hope of continuing to play was to undergo a procedure that had never been tried on a ballplayer. The operation, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe on Sept. 25, 1974, consisted of replacing the ligament with a tendon grafted from John’s right wrist. Holes were drilled in the humerus and ulna bones, above and below the elbow, and the tendon was wound through the holes in a figure-8 shape. The doctor’s uncertainty was whether the body would accept the new “elbow” or reject it. For John, the additional question was whether a long and grueling rehabilitation could return him to the mound — let alone in elite condition. (When he awoke from surgery, John later wrote, Jobe placed the chances of his pitching again at 1 in 100.)
It took a year and half to answer those questions, but John pitched his first postsurgery game on April 16, 1976, and went on to win 10 games that season and lose 10 as well, with a better-than-average 3.09 ERA. Nicknamed the Bionic Man, he was named National League Comeback Player of the Year by The Sporting News, and, as a religious Christian, he spent much of the offseason telling charity banquet audiences and civic organizations how God had helped him overcome the odds. John followed his comeback year with his best seasons, and he won 164 games after receiving his new elbow. But the surgery was more than a personal triumph. It became commonplace in baseball — in 2023, about a third of active major-league pitchers had undergone the procedure — and has saved dozens of careers, for both pitchers and position players. While not all players return, or return at the same level, at least three Hall of Famers (Paul Molitor, John Smoltz and Billy Wagner) had the operation. So have numerous other stars, including Shohei Ohtani, Stephen Strasburg, Jacob deGrom, Chris Sale, Jose Canseco and Justin Verlander; deGrom, Verlander and Sale even won Cy Young Awards after recovering. The procedure, whose formal designation is ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, swiftly became commonly known as Tommy John surgery. Thomas Edward John Jr. was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, on May 22, 1943, the second of two children of Thomas E. John Sr., a lineman for a utility company, and Ruth (Woods) John, who managed the home. He played basketball as well as baseball for Gerstmeyer Technical High School in Terre
Haute and was recruited by several college basketball powers, including the University of Kentucky. But he preferred baseball, and in 1961, at 18, he signed with the Cleveland Indians (now Guardians) organization and began his professional career in the low minor leagues in Dubuque, Iowa. Late in the 1963 season, he made his major-league debut. He had a two-pitch main repertoire and lacked an intimidating fastball. His was usually clocked between 85 and 87 mph — a turtle of a pitch, really, compared with those in the mid-90s and above thrown by many big leaguers. But John’s fastball had natural movement, a downward fade — he often spoke of it as a sinker — that caused hitters to swing above it and either miss or hit the top of the ball, resulting in a plethora of groundouts. His other pitch was a swooping curve that caused left-handed batters to wave desperately at the ball as it ran away from them and surprised right-handers when it returned from the opposite batter’s box to clip the outside corner on the way to the catcher. The Indians, however, were wary of his lack of a power pitch. Early Wynn, the Hall of Famer who was then the team’s pitching coach, encouraged him to develop a slider — a breaking pitch thrown harder than a curve, with a shorter, sharper break. John adopted it, but throwing it frequently hurt the movement on his fastball. The team quickly lost confidence in his promise and traded him to the Chicago White Sox. There he became a legitimate starter over seven up-and-down seasons. In 1971, the White Sox traded him to the Dodgers for slugger Dick Allen.
The San Juan Daily Star In 1975, while John was recovering from his arm surgery, an arbitrator ruled that baseball’s reserve clause, which contractually bound players to their teams as long the teams wanted them, should be invalidated, thus beginning the era of free agency. After the 1978 season, John tested the market and was signed by the Yankees. His first two seasons in New York were stellar, but at 39 his talent began to decline, and in midseason 1982, the Yankees traded him to the California Angels. Tenaciously, he hung on for seven more seasons; in addition to the Angels, he pitched briefly for the Oakland A’s in 1985 and returned to the Yankees in 1986. For mediocre Yankee teams in 1987 and 1988 — and by then in his mid-40s — he started more than 30 games each year, going 22-14. His career ended the following May, when the Yankees released him. After his playing career ended, he worked as a television analyst, as a coach, in the front office for minor-league teams and as a motivational speaker. He also came to criticize the ballooning — and, in his view, reckless — use of Tommy John surgery on increasingly hard-throwing preprofessional players; today, more than half of the surgeries are performed on teens. John married Sally Simmons in 1970; they were divorced in 2013. He married Cheryl Beecher Zeldin in 2021. She survives him, as do three of his children from his first marriage, Tommy III, Travis and Tamara Mannelly; a sister, Marilyn Hyde; and two grandchildren. His son Taylor died in 2010, reportedly because of a seizure and heart failure caused by an overdose of prescription drugs. After some years living in New York and California, he and his wife moved to Lakewood Ranch, a planned community outside Sarasota, in 2021. John’s 26-year career totals include a 288-231 won-lost record, a 3.34 ERA, more than 4,700 innings pitched, 2,245 strikeouts and a 1.28 WHIP (walks plus hits per innings

Tommy John pitches for the Yankees during a game against the Kansas City Royals, in New York, Aug. 7, 1986. John, a canny left-handed pitcher who won nearly 300 major-league games, more than half of them after recovering from an innovative elbow surgery that came to be known by his name, died on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2026, at his home in Lakewood Ranch, Fla. He was 83. (Larry C. Morris/The New York Times) pitched). While those statistics are borderline Hall of Fame-worthy, he never came close to being voted in. Many have felt he should be inducted given the importance to the sport of the surgery named after him. Baseball history might very well have been different if John had decided against the operation — or if the surgery had come along earlier and reclaimed lost careers like that of Sandy Koufax, the great Dodger left-hander who retired in 1966, at 30, with unendurable elbow pain. “Sandy Koufax teases me,” Jobe, who performed the first Tommy John surgery, said in 2013. “He said: ‘Why weren’t you smart enough to come up with that 10 years before? Then it could be called the Koufax operation.’”
