Miss Universe Puerto Rico confirms second trans contestant for 2026
By THE STAR STAFF
iss Universe Puerto Rico has announced that Gabriel Rodríguez Velázquez will compete in its 2026 national pageant, marking the second time an openly trans woman has entered the competition.
Rodríguez Velázquez follows Daniela Arroyo Gonzá lez, who broke ground in 2023 as the first trans contestant in the island’s Miss Universe franchi se. Pageant organizers said the new announcement reflects their ongoing commitment to representing “modern womanhood in all its diversity,” a mes sage the organization has increasingly emphasized in recent years.
In statements shared through the pageant’s official channels, Rodríguez Velázquez described her candidacy as a platform to advocate for dignity, equality and inclusion.
“I want to be Miss Universe Puerto Rico because of what I represent: a woman who stands for equality and respect,” she said in a promotional video released by the organization.
Beyond pageantry, Rodríguez Velázquez is known as a multidisci plinary artist whose work spans music, performance and writing. She is also an accomplished athlete, having competed
in table tennis at the federation level in Puerto Rico. Her participation comes amid broader changes within the Miss Universe Organization, which has allowed trans women to compete since 2012, with the policy first taking effect during the 2013 season.
As with previous milestones, the announcement has sparked debate across social media. In response to criticism directed at Rodríguez Velázquez, the LGBTQ+ Federation of Puerto Rico issued a statement defending her right to compete under existing rules and condemning hostile reactions as discriminatory.

“Trans people have dreams and aspirations like anyone else,” said fede ration director Ivana Fred Millán, noting that Rodríguez Velázquez earned her place “through effort and persistence.”
For Rodríguez Velázquez and her supporters, the significance of her participation extends beyond the com petition itself.
“Every time a trans woman is visible in a space that once excluded us, doors open a little wider,” she said in a recent interview with island media.
Her entry into the 2026 pageant adds another chapter to the evolving conversation about representation, inclusion, and the future of beauty competitions in Puerto Rico and beyond.
Group slams Education Dept. changes it says hurt special needs students
By THE STAR STAFF
Ruth Concepción, the president of the Association of Providers of Services Under Provisional Reme dies, warned Tuesday that recent actions by the Puerto Rico Department of Education (DE) could sharply restrict access to therapy services for students in special education, raising alarm among parents who rely on the court‑ordered mechanism.
Concepción said the provisional remedy system was created precisely because the DE lacked the capacity to provide essential therapy services to the special educa tion community. Private providers stepped in under court supervision to fill that gap. Now, she said, the agency is attempting to take control of the process while limiting who can participate.
“Education has taken control of the resources that the court established for parents to ensure justice after
the state failed to comply,” Concepción said in a radio interview.
She argued that the department which was orde red by the court to pay for services it was not providing is now imposing new restrictions that undermine the purpose of the remedy.
“The Department of Education currently does not have an open door for new providers who want to enter the provisional remedy mechanism,” she added. “They have created restrictive conditions that prevent additional professionals from offering services.”
The association contends that decisions affecting the program are being made without the participation of the families and providers who depend on it, creating what they describe as barriers to therapy access for children with special education needs.
The Department of Education had not publicly responded to the allegations as of press time Tuesday.
Governor’s chief of staff defends conduct
Domenech denies conflicts in sweeping Senate inquiry
By THE STAR STAFF
La Fortaleza Chief of Staff Francisco Domenech Fernández on Tuesday delivered a forceful defense of his conduct in government, submitting a 64‑page response to the Puerto Rico Senate after an unprecedented interpellation and more than 200 follow‑up questions focused heavily on his former lobbying firm, Politank Corp.
In a letter addressed to Senate President Thomas Rive ra Schatz, Domenech accused lawmakers of engaging in a politically motivated effort to “create confusion where none exists” and to damage both his reputation and the adminis tration of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.
“Any impartial observer will notice that most of the questions are based on an apparent desire to create confusion where there is none,” he wrote, adding that the process had “sullied my name.”
The Senate’s inquiry -- the first interpellation of a La Fortaleza chief of staff in the island’s history centered on whether Domenech has improperly influenced government contracting processes involving companies that were once clients of Politank, which he founded and later sold before entering public service.
Domenech acknowledged that there is no official institu tional protocol to identify whether certain contracts are linked to Politank. The Government Ethics Office says any official must request in writing to be relieved of making decisions in which the official believes there may be a conflict of interest.
Domenech repeatedly emphasized that he has no cur rent ties to Politank and that he established a formal internal inhibition protocol upon taking office in January 2025. Ac cording to his responses, any matter involving former clients is handled by career officials and the deputy secretary of the
Office of the Governor without his involvement.
He stated that he has not participated in contract eval uations, procurement decisions, or communications related to companies such as Intervoice, Accenture, MMM/Elevance Health, or other entities that have secured government work since 2025.
“I inhibited myself from any and all matters of past and present clients of Politank Corp.,” he wrote.
Domenech also denied having discussed government matters with Politank executives, saying any interactions have been limited to social events.
A significant portion of the Senate’s questions focused on multimillion‑dollar contracts awarded by the Puerto Rico Health Insurance Administration and the Department of Health. Domenech said he played no role in the adjudica tion of a $97.6 million contract involving MMM/Elevance Health and noted that premium increases were determined by independent actuaries.
He also distanced himself from technology procure ments, including a $14.1 million contract awarded to Inter voice and a series of amendments to Accenture’s long‑running SAP modernization work at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority. He argued that many of those amendments originated under the previous administration and were tied to ongoing modernization projects.
Senators also pressed Domenech on whether the government had hired the financial advisory firm Houlihan Lokey, which previously represented Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) bondholders in the island’s bank ruptcy proceedings. Domenech flatly rejected the premise, stating repeatedly that the government did not hire the firm and therefore no conflict-of-interest analysis or contract registration exists.
He further stated that neither he nor officials of the Puerto Rico Fiscal Agency and Financial Advisory Authority, which Domenech heads, have negotiated with PREPA bondholders
LUMA installs 135 reclosers to detect faults
By THE STAR STAFF
LUMA Energy, the private operator of Puerto Rico’s electric power transmission and distribution system, is moving forward with a new phase of grid‑modernization efforts, installing advanced automated equipment across the system to reduce outage times and improve service reliability for tens of thousands of customers.
The initiative is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) as part of broader federal support for rebuilding and strengthening the island’s power infrastructure.
The latest upgrades include the installation of 135 au tomated devices known as reclosers -- smart sensors placed directly on power lines that can detect faults more quickly and, in many cases, restore service automatically without the need
for field crews. The equipment is being deployed on both sin gle phase lines serving residential areas and three phase lines supplying commercial and industrial customers.
According to LUMA, the new technology allows the utility to pinpoint the location of a failure faster, isolate the affected section of the grid, and restore power to unaffected areas within seconds. The company says the improvements reduce the number of customers impacted by outages and help crews arrive on site better prepared. With this latest de ployment, Puerto Rico’s electrical system now has more than 1,300 automated devices in operation.
“We know how important it is to have a reliable electric service,” said Pedro Meléndez Meléndez, LUMA’s chief engi neering and capital programs officer. “This technology allows us to respond more quickly when an interruption occurs and,
represented by Politank in the past.
Domenech dismissed allegations that he or outside consultants exerted undue influence over the Department of Education or the Central Office for Recovery, Reconstruction and Resiliency (COR3). He said he communicates only with the Education secretary and does not intervene in tenders, personnel decisions or internal processes.
On COR3, he referred senators to information submitted directly by the entity’s executive director, Eduardo Soria Rivera. Domenech also addressed questions about Puerto Rico’s fiscal health, delays in audited financial statements, and the long-troubled Deloitte ERP project. He attributed delays in financial reporting to incomplete information from LUMA Energy and said the administration has, for the first time, set firm implementation dates for the ERP system: July 2026 for the finance modules and January 2027 for the human resources modules.
He rejected the notion that federal funds have masked economic weaknesses, arguing instead that structural reforms and long-term stability remain priorities.
in many cases, reduce the time our customers remain without service. Our focus is to continue modernizing the grid with solutions that have a direct impact on service and provide a better experience for our customers.”
The new reclosers were installed across 14 feeders serving communities in the regions of Ponce, Caguas, Arecibo, May agüez and San Juan, benefiting more than 32,000 customers. LUMA prioritized areas where automated technology can deliver the greatest impact, particularly during unexpected events or periods of high demand.
Next steps include activating the devices and integrating them into LUMA’s monitoring systems through wireless commu nication radios. Once connected, the equipment will provide real‑time visibility into grid performance and allow control centers to identify and respond to faults with greater precision.
The project is part of a larger modernization program that includes replacing critical infrastructure and digitizing the island’s electrical system. It also complements federally funded reconstruction initiatives aimed at transforming Puerto Rico’s long-troubled grid into a more resilient and reliable network.

PREB endorses bill allowing towns to partner with grid operator on streetlight repairs
By THE STAR STAFF
Speaker of the Puerto Rico House of Representatives Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez announced that the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (PREB) has endorsed House Bill 1207, which legally allows municipalities to enter into agreements with the private operator of the island’s electric power transmission and distribution network for the installation, repair, maintenance, and modernization of public lighting.
“The lack of public lighting has a direct impact on road safety, public safety, and the economic activity of communities. Therefore, repairing and maintaining the lighting system in optimal condition is fundamental to improving the safety and quality of life of the people,” the House speaker said. “That is why, since last December, along with Representative Víctor Parés, we have been advocating for municipalities to be able to replace and maintain streetlights within their jurisdictions.”
“This bill recognizes the role of municipalities in repairing public lighting within clearly defined operational functions, preserving the technical uniformity of the electrical system in conjunction with the transmission and distribution system operator, and maintaining the Energy Bureau’s authority to oversee, correct, and revoke any authorization granted,” Méndez added.
The measure, co-authored by House Government Committee Chairman Parés, creates the “Law for Municipal Collaboration in the Installation, Repair, Maintenance, and Modernization of the Public Lighting System” and establishes public policy regarding the installation, repair, maintenance, and modernization of public lighting. It also establishes the regulatory framework for collaborative agreements between municipalities and the electrical system operator, currently LUMA Energy LLC.
In the legislation’s preamble, PREB Chairman Edison Avilés Deliz emphasized that “there is no doubt that public lighting in Puerto Rico must be a priority for all entities of the Government of Puerto Rico, as it directly impacts the safety of Puerto Ricans.
“Likewise, we recognize that road lighting is crucial to maintaining the safety of our road network and preventing accidents that could result in loss of life. Therefore, the PREB supports any measure aimed at improving and upgrading our public lighting system within a uniform regulatory framework, established with the necessary technical expertise and supervised by the Bureau.”
Avilés added that “given this, and after the corresponding legal analysis and the aforementioned points, the State can enter into collaborative agreements with the municipalities to address the public lighting situation.”
It is important to point out however that such collaboration should be conceived as complementary and subordinate, and not as a replacement for the functions of the state regulatory body or the electrical system operator, Méndez noted.
The PREB recently certified the availability of $1.2 billion for streetlight repairs across the island. Through a resolution dated Feb. 11, $527 million was reallocated for the repair and replacement of public lighting in some 35 municipalities that did not have allocated funds.
With that reallocation of funds, it is ensured that all the municipalities are part of the current phase of the Community Public Lighting Program, along with the remaining 42 municipalities. That means that all municipalities in Puerto Rico are covered for lighting projects under Federal Emergency Management Agency funds.
Senator urges citizens to assist authorities in response to homicides in Coamo
By THE STAR STAFF
District VI (Guayama) Sen. Rafael “Rafy”
Santos Ortiz expressed his concern on Tuesday regarding recent homicides reported in the municipality of Coamo, while also calling for citizen collaboration.
“Coamo is a town of noble and hardworking people whose quality of life has been tarnished in recent days by these violent acts that un-
doubtedly deserve everyone’s condemnation,” the senator said.
Santos Ortiz noted that in the early hours of the day he maintained communication with Puerto Rico Police Superintendent Joseph González Falcón in order to learn details about the incidents and the actions underway.
“It was a productive conversation, in which the superintendent shared information with me about the progress of the investigations and the
security plans being implemented to guarantee the protection of the public,” he added. “There is a clear focus and an aggressive work plan to address this situation.”
The senator also said he had contacted Coamo Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla, reiterating his willingness to collaborate and join forces in the fight against crime in the municipality.
Santos Ortiz called on citizens to cooperate with the authorities.
“It is important that anyone with information about these events share it confidentially with the Puerto Rico Police,” he said. “Security is a shared responsibility, and citizen collaboration is key to solving these cases.”
The most recent in a rash of homicides in Coamo was reported in the early hours of Tuesday, at kilometer 5.1 of Road 5556, in the Pastos Santa Ana neighborhood of the southern town.
Upon arrival at the scene, uniformed officers discovered the body of Coamo resident Stanley Edney Zayas, 37 -- who was identified by a family member -- inside a black 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, bearing gunshot wounds to various parts of his body
and severely burned.
On Monday, authorities reported that two individuals shot to death in an apartment at the Jardín del Edén Public Housing Complex in Coamo had been identified as Eduardo González Mateo, 41, and Yilennies Figueroa Burgos, 31. The Police stated that both individuals sustained gunshot wounds that resulted in their immediate death at the scene.
It was reported that González Mateo had a criminal record with the Puerto Rico Police Department related to controlled substances.
On March 25, a violent death was reported around 6:14 a.m. on Wednesday on Road PR-138, in the Palmarejo ward, Vega Puente sector, where the body of a man with multiple gunshot wounds was discovered at the scene.

Trump administration to begin refunding $166 billion in tariffs
By TONY ROMM and ANA SWANSON
When President Donald Trump unveiled his sprawling global tariffs last spring, he boasted that they would generate windfall profits and “make America wealthy again.”
But after suffering a significant Supreme Court defeat, Trump is about to pay the money back.
Starting this week the Trump administration is set to take its first steps toward returning more than $166 billion collected from tariffs that were struck down in February. Just over a year after imposing many of the duties, the government is expected to begin accepting requests for refunds, surrendering its prized source of revenue — plus interest.
For some U.S. businesses, the highly anticipated refunds could be substantial, offering critical if belated financial relief. Tariffs are taxes on imports, so the president’s trade policies have served as a great burden for companies that rely on foreign goods. Many have had to choose whether to absorb the duties, cut other costs or pass on the expenses to consumers.
By Monday morning, those companies could begin to submit documentation to the government to recover what they paid in illegal tariffs. In a sign of the demand, more than 3,000 businesses, including FedEx and Costco, have already sued the Trump administration in a bid to secure their refunds, with some cases filed even before the Supreme Court’s ruling.
But only the entities that officially paid the tariffs are eligible to recover that money. That means that the fuller universe of people affected by Trump’s policies — including millions of Americans who paid higher prices for the products they bought — are not able to apply for direct relief.
The extent to which consumers realize any gain hinges on whether businesses share the proceeds, something that few have publicly committed to do. Some have started to band together in class-action lawsuits in the hopes of receiving a payout.
Many business owners said they weren’t sure how easy the tariff refund process would be, particularly given Trump’s stated opposition to returning the money. The administration has suggested that it may be months before companies see any money. Adding to the uncertainty, the White House has declined to say if it might still try to return to court in a bid to halt some or all of the refunds.
Melkon Khosrovian, the co-founder of Greenbar Distillery in Los Angeles, prepared for the refund process by readying documents and registering on the new government refund portal. Trump’s duties had been a “nightmare” for his distillery, he said, which requires foreign-grown ingredients such as vanilla, nutmeg, juniper berries, coffee, tea and hibiscus.
Khosrovian, a participant in We Pay the Tariffs, a coalition of small businesses that have opposed the president’s policies, admitted he didn’t have high hopes that he would see a refund anytime soon. His company had paid nearly $100,000 in tariffs that are now deemed illegal.
“We’re thinking we might get it back, we might not get it back,” he said. “It feels like a very opaque process.”
The White House did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which

manages the tariff refund process, declined to make officials available for an interview.
At the heart of the matter is the ever-changing slate of so-called reciprocal tariffs that Trump imposed last year using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. No president before him had ever used the 1977 law to apply tariffs, prompting the Supreme Court to rule against Trump in February. The decision ended Trump’s most nimble and potent trade power, which he had used for a vast array of purposes — from fighting illegal drugs to protecting political allies abroad.
While the government has lost trade cases in the past — and has been forced to refund money as a result — the repayment process now awaiting Trump is unlike any in recent history. By the administration’s own count, there were more than 330,000 importers by March that had paid IEEPA duties on more than 53 million entries.
The government estimates that it amassed more than $166 billion in revenue from those taxes on imports. That outstanding balance is expected to accrue roughly an additional $650 million in interest each month, or about $22 million per day, according to Scott Lincicome, the vice president for general economics at the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute.
The fiscal stakes alone prompted Trump to assert throughout the legal battle that a loss could tip the government into a “GREAT DEPRESSION!” a claim that economists widely rejected. Once the Supreme Court ruled against him, his administration then tried to slow the process until the Court of International Trade intervened in March and ordered the government to return the money to importers.
The trade court’s order appeared to set off a scramble among federal customs officials to put together a digital process for handling a crush of requests, according to legal filings. Those filings also revealed the technical challenges that the Trump administration faced in trying to return the money.
Among the many obstacles, the Trump administration said it had to stand up an entirely new system that could process refunds in bulk and disentangle illegal tariffs from legal ones on
those same goods. At first, the government didn’t even have a way to deposit money directly into the bank accounts of most importers, customs officials said.
As a result, the refund system debuting Monday, known as CAPE, will be able to process imports only at a certain point of the duty-paying process. That covers about 63% of import entries subject to IEEPA tariffs, the government previously said, though it plans to expand the system soon. In its public guidance, customs said it expected it would take 60 to 90 days to issue a refund once it accepts an importer’s filing.
Katie Hilferty, who oversees the trade practice at the Washington law firm Morgan Lewis, described the refund process as novel and complex, adding that she would be “pleasantly surprised” if refunds were paid as quickly as the government said. But, she added, given the scale of the operation, “I would not be surprised if there are technical glitches or other processing errors that occur.”
Even if they are able to recoup their tariffs, the largest U.S. companies are likely to face pressure to share any refunds with customers, who have seen prices rise as a result of Trump’s duties.
At least one company, FedEx, has already said it would try to return the money to customers. The shipping giant is frequently listed as the importer of record, but it passes along the duties owed to the customers and companies that purchased the goods.
To impose his replacement tariffs, the Trump administration has opened investigations into dozens of other countries’ trade practices under a provision of the 1974 Trade Act. Those inquiries are expected to result in tariffs similar in magnitude to those that the Supreme Court struck down. Trump has already applied a temporary 10% tariff on most imports using another section of the 1974 law.
Small business and states have once again challenged Trump over his use of the latter authority, known as Section 122. The companies in that case are represented by the Liberty Justice Center, the legal group that prevailed against Trump over his IEEPA duties at the Supreme Court.
Sara Albrecht, the chair of the center, sounded optimistic before Monday that the refunds could proceed at a good pace. But, she added, it would not undo the damage done to businesses since Trump announced his tariffs at the event he had dubbed “Liberation Day” last April.
“It still doesn’t address the harm that small businesses endured over the past year,” Albrecht said, explaining that the layoffs and other cuts that firms had to make mean they are “not going to be made whole.”
Labor secretary steps down amid internal investigation
By REBECCA DAVIS O’BRIEN
Lori Chavez-DeRemer, President Donald Trump’s embattled labor secretary, stepped down earlier this week as multiple scandals and investigations closed in on her.
“Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer will be leaving the administration to take a position in the private sector,” Steven Cheung, a White House spokesperson, posted on the social platform X. He said that Keith Sonderling, the deputy secretary of labor, would serve as acting secretary.
Cheung said Chavez-DeRemer had “done a phenomenal job in her role by protecting American workers, enacting fair labor practices and helping Americans gain additional skills to improve their lives.” But pressure on her mounted in recent weeks, as investigators and Congressional leaders homed in on questions about her conduct in office, and that of her aides and family members.
The Labor Department’s inspector general’s office is nearing the end of a monthslong investigation into a whistleblower’s allegations of professional misconduct by Chavez-DeRemer and her closest aides, including claims that she was having an affair with a member of her security team and that she used department resources for personal trips. Chavez-DeRemer was expected to be interviewed in the matter in the coming days.
Investigators spoke with several dozen witnesses, and uncovered evidence that Chavez-DeRemer and her staff abused federal spending limits on personal trips, several people familiar with the investigation said, including on fancy hotels, SUV rentals

and meals. Four people have already left or been forced out of their jobs in connection with the investigation.
Investigators had also reviewed personal text messages sent to young female staff members by Chavez-DeRemer, her former deputy chief of staff, her husband and her father. The messages, reported last week by The New York Times, suggested that the secretary was drinking during the workday and raised questions
Michigan gas clerk helps save kidnapped teen

AMichigan gas station clerk helped save a 16-year-old girl who entered his store and mouthed the word “help” after a man had kidnapped her at gunpoint on her way to school last week, authorities said.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office on Thursday charged the suspect, Donald James Joseph Arthur Fields, 48, of Hamtramck, Michigan, with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, one count of kidnapping, one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and one count of felonious assault, Chief Hussein Farhat of the Hamtramck Police

about professionalism with her staff.
The likelihood of embarrassing details coming out through the inspector general inquiry was compounded by a parallel inquiry on Capitol Hill: Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, chair of the Judiciary Committee, demanded internal records and statements from the department in connection with the allegations.
Chavez-DeRemer’s husband has been barred from the department’s headquarters, after female staff members accused him of making unwanted sexual advances, including filing a police report.
Although police and prosecutors have said they would not bring criminal charges against him, the situation has continued to reverberate in the secretary’s office: In recent weeks, three claims of a hostile work environment were filed against ChavezDeRemer with the department’s civil rights office.
Sonderling, a labor lawyer with a decade of government experience, has been effectively leading the Labor Department during Chavez-DeRemer’s tenure, multiple employees told the Times.
Chavez-DeRemer, 58, a one-term former Republican member of Congress from Oregon, was nominated to the secretary position with backing from the Teamsters union, whose president, Sean O’Brien, had supported Trump’s 2024 run.
But her leadership of the department left many employees frustrated and demoralized, including career staff and political appointees. Dozens described, in interviews with the Times, a toxic workplace characterized by an absentee secretary and hostile aides.
girl who mouthed ‘help’
Department said at a news conference. Fields also faces other felony firearm charges.
Fields is being held without bond in Wayne County Jail, Farhat said. A court-appointed lawyer for Fields could not immediately be reached.
“This was a community effort,” Farhat said. “This was a heroic actions by a young student that allowed us to get there, and also that followed up with another heroic action by a gas station clerk.”
A girl who attends Frontier International Academy in Hamtramck, just outside Detroit, was waiting for a bus just after 7 a.m. on April 13 when a man, identified by authorities as Fields, placed something at her back, forced her into his van and drove away, prosecutors said in a news release. A fellow female student who saw what happened immediately called 911, and police were dispatched for a possible kidnapping, prosecutors said.
Fields drove to a gas-station convenience store in Detroit, which he entered with the girl and had her buy cigarettes for him, prosecutors said. Prosecutors say Fields sexually assaulted the girl in the van.
The gas station clerk, Abdulrahman Abohatem, said in an interview with WXYZ-TV in Detroit that he found it strange the man had the girl pay for the cigarettes. Then the girl mouthed “help,” he said.
Abohatem stepped out from behind the store’s protective glass, told the girl to get behind him and kicked the man out of the store, he said.
Police arrived moments later and arrested Fields, confiscated a handgun and seized the van, prosecutors said. Police were able to locate Fields and the girl at the store with help from students at Frontier International Academy, who were tracking the girl’s location using their cellphones and social media, prosecutors said.
Body camera footage released by the Hamtramck Police Department and broadcast by WXYZ-TV shows officers apprehending Fields after he exits the convenience store. According to the body camera footage, the officers said a man ran out of the store pointing out Fields to police. Fields can be heard asking officers why he’s being detained.
Fields was arraigned Thursday. Prosecutors described what happened to the girl as “every parent’s worst nightmare.”
“Our young survivor in this case was simply walking in broad daylight when she was viciously attacked and sexually assaulted,” Kym Worthy, the county prosecutor, said in a statement. “Despite what she had just gone through, her quick thinking and mental toughness saved her life. We cannot reverse what happened to her, but we can work hard to bring justice to her.”
Fields is scheduled to appear in court April 30.
How Trump can wrap up the war
By BRET STEPHENS
“The easiest method for the United States to reopen Hormuz,” I wrote last Tuesday, “is to start seizing tankers carrying Iranian crude once they reach the Arabian Sea.” I was reiterating a point I had made in this column a week earlier: “The principle would be ‘all or nothing’: Either energy flows freely from the strait, unimpeded by Tehran, or it doesn’t flow at all.”
On Sunday, Donald Trump described the point of his blockade of Iran to Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo: “It won’t be a friend of yours, like a country that’s your ally,” the president said, referring to Iran giving safe passage to tankers that had carried its oil or paid a toll. “It’s all or nothing.”
Since the president is taking good advice, let me offer a few more suggestions.
First, Trump should put Iran’s regime to a fundamental choice: It can have an economy. Or the regime can attempt to have a nuclear program while trying to control the Strait of Hormuz. But it can’t have both.
“Iran’s central bank has warned President Masoud Pezeshkian that rebuilding the country’s war-damaged economy could take more than a decade,” reports Iran International, an Iranian opposition news site based in London. The bank anticipates up to 2 million additional
people left jobless by the war, along with inflation as high as 180%. An inflation rate of over 40% was what sparked January’s mass protests. As for the effects of the blockade, the site reports, it would wipe out “an estimated $435 million in daily economic activity,” and force “oil field shutdowns within weeks.”
Iran will surely try to test the blockade by targeting Arab ports. The regime should be warned of the consequences, starting with the destruction of Iran’s most vital energy facilities, on Kharg Island. (So far, the U.S. has hit only military targets on the island.) Alternatively, Iran’s leaders can surrender their stockpile of highly enriched uranium, forswear enriching uranium and reopen the Strait of Hormuz as an international waterway. The choice should be theirs to make.
Second, Trump must bear in mind what precipitated the current crisis with Iran — not its nuclear programs, but the murder of thousands of Iranian protesters in January. What Iran’s leaders fear more than economic collapse is the wrath of their own people.

regime,”

object to this, they can always volunteer to send their own troops to enforce the U.N. Security Council resolution that Hezbollah has been violating for nearly 20 years.
Finally, Trump can offer the regime a grand bargain: what I’ve long called “normalization for normalization.”
Iran could get an end to both war and blockade, full relief from international sanctions, the resumption of diplomatic and commercial relations with the United States and every other benefit that Iran used to enjoy before the Islamic Revolution of 1979. In return, all that would be asked of Iran is to behave like a normal country: no efforts to support armed militias throughout the region, or harbor Qaida leaders, or send hit squads to kill or kidnap enemies abroad, or declare “death to Israel” and “death to America” as foundational principles of the regime while trying to build nuclear weapons.
Dr. Ricardo Angulo Founder PO BOX 6537 Caguas PR 00726
Administration policy should be geared to exploit that wrath. That begins by breaking the information blockade the regime has sought to impose through an internet blackout. Fully restoring funding to Radio Farda, the Persian-language service of Radio Free Europe that the Trump administration slashed last year during the tenure of the incompetent Kari Lake would be one place to start. Flooding Iran with additional Starlink terminals — too many for the regime to stop — would be the next. What would not help, by contrast, is to target civilian infrastructure, particularly power plants, whose destruction could only bring misery to ordinary Iranians.
The most important step Trump could take would be to warn the regime publicly — and in a way that gets communicated to Iran’s people — that it will intervene militarily if it again attempts a bloody crackdown on public protests. The United States cannot bring about regime change in Iran. But it can do what it can to tilt the scales in favor of the millions of disaffected Iranians who can.
Third, if the regime wants to link the current ceasefire with an end to Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, then it must itself desist from arming and financing the terrorist group.
The principle is simple: Israel will get out of Lebanon the moment Iran gets out of Lebanon. Failing that, the United States should give Israel a green light to continue degrading Hezbollah’s capabilities until it can no longer initiate wars against Israel, as the group did in 2006, 2023 and again this year. If other states, particularly France as Lebanon’s former colonial power,
Does any of that sound outrageous? Of course not. The outrage is that the regime’s current leaders would almost certainly dismiss the proposal out of hand because ideological militancy, rather than fidelity to the interests of the Iranian people, is what has defined them for the past 47 years.
The moment an Iranian government, including the current one, accepts these terms, we’ll know that we are dealing with a fundamentally different regime. It would be statesmanlike of Trump to propose it — and wise of him to keep turning the screws on the regime’s leaders until they accept it.

Not too long ago, movie stars generated Hollywood’s cultural cachet and powered its economic engine. A movie star’s aspirational visage, honed for public appeal, could turn sometimes even small-scale movies into large-scale hits garnering over $100 million. For the last couple of decades, those days have felt like a faint memory. The box office success of “Iron Man” in 2008, propelled by Robert Downey Jr.’s star power, spurred studios to mine pop culture material to make intellectual property the star. The collapse of home video during the emergence of streaming further narrowed the studio margins required to produce star-fronted movies. So have we reached the end of the era in which celebrities can sell tickets on their name alone? Not exactly, but it seems these days, if movie stars want hits, they have to work harder than ever to twist themselves to fit the moment.
Over the last calendar year, star-driven movies ranging from “Project Hail Mary” to “The Housemaid” have climbed the box office. But the films have required above-the-line talent to be less like idols and more like salespeople. Actors have always been a vital part of a movie’s publicity machine, appearing on late-night talk shows and on magazine covers in those weeks leading up to a movie’s release. But now, reaching a decentralized moviegoing public who are immune to traditional studio outreach requires uncommon tenacity and ingenuity across screens large and small; podcasts mainstream and niche; and more. In the last year, your marquee idols are now making pizza, popping up on game shows like “Family Feud,” cultivating brand deals and jumping through TikTok-ian hoops for your attention. Even Michael B. Jordan, who won the best acting Oscar in March for “Sinners,” needs to show up to marketing-driven events like CinemaCon to promote his remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
Let’s first consider Joseph Kosinski’s highoctane racing flick “F1.” That film about a cocky former racing phenom in search of redemption starred Brad Pitt, a proven talent who most fits the classic movie star mold. Nevertheless, Pitt had a tall task ahead of him. Outside of “Ford v Ferrari” (2019), recent racing movies (like the 2023 films “Gran Turismo” and “Ferrari”) have struggled to make their budget back. Also, Apple’s track record at the box office could best be described as shaky by leaning on a theatrical strategy that prizes subscriber growth, such as limited releases of “Highest 2 Lowest” or “The Lost Bus,” over ticket sales.
Is the movie star back? Sort of.

Additionally, Pitt’s prolonged legal battle with Angelina Jolie after the two separated, which included Jolie’s abuse allegations against Pitt (which the actor denied through his lawyer), had the potential to damage his star appeal.
But Pitt and the film’s production team approached the film’s promotion and its financing from a variety of angles. One of its producers, David Leener, helped broker sponsorship deals with brands like Tommy Hilfiger, SharkNinja, Mercedes-AMG and more for Pitt’s fictional racing team. Those ads reportedly amounted to over $40 million to help cover a portion of the film’s production budget. In that sense, Pitt adeptly auctioned off his star image onscreen to make the calculus of his star vehicle work.
“Marty Supreme” similarly intertwined the film’s subject with its male star’s image making. Timothée Chalamet’s desire to make this story, of a midcentury American Jewish man hoping to dominate the table tennis world, an actual draw presented a chance to confirm his own box office appeal. He sent “Marty Supreme” jackets to celebrities such as Susan Boyle and Tom Brady, and even shared a video of himself on top of the Las Vegas Sphere. Were these stunts Chalamet as Marty or Chalamet as himself? “Marty Supreme” muddied those waters when a satirical video dropped of Chalamet in a video meeting with executives planning marketing for the movie. While the actor mildly came under fire after his comments about ballet and opera, by crafting a persona built on audaciousness he helped make “Marty Supreme” the highest grossing A24 movie, if only to tease what he might do next.
“The Housemaid,” conversely, found
to skate around controversy, Robbie and Elordi turned theirs into marketing moments via fashion-oriented publicity stunts. The stars increased the perception of their mutual obsession, with Robbie sharing that on Valentine’s Day during shooting, Elordi filled her dressing room with roses addressed from Heathcliff. Robbie later got signet rings for the two. Robbie also wore the Taj Mahal diamond necklace at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, causing a stir when she referred to it as Elizabeth Taylor’s necklace even though it was originally a gift from Mughal ruler Shah Jahan to his wife Mumtaz Mahal. The gaffe opened her to criticisms online of whitewashing the pendant’s origin. Those decisions engaged an audience looking for a star-centered romance, and baited those searching for a darker take on the book’s toxic love story to rage online about the press
twice the draw by matching the literary success of Freida McFadden’s same-titled novel with known stars Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Like Pitt, Sweeney faced a precarious reintroduction to audiences following her illfated American Eagle denim campaign. While Sweeney’s previous film “Christy” bombed, her role as a live-in maid in Paul Feig’s erotic psychological thriller allowed her to tap the same sexy camp formula that made her romcom “Anyone But You” a surprise hit. Sweeney and Seyfried further leaned into the film’s playful aspect by appearing on “Celebrity Family Feud,” a viral moment that reached those at home and online.
Sweeney also relies on her Instagram to promote her ventures. In January, for instance, she posted a video of herself lacing the Hollywood sign with bras to announce her new lingerie line. On Instagram for “The Housemaid,” Sweeney shared behind-the-scenes photos from the film that went viral. Her approach allowed her to link her film’s campiness with her carefree candidness.
Emerald Fennell’s reimagining of Emily Brontë’s “Wuthering Heights” relies on a similar formula: a popular literary property plus beautiful movie stars geared toward a female audience. She even added the kicker of a modern soundtrack by “Always Everywhere” pop star Charli XCX. Interest (along with a little ire) was further piqued when Jacob Elordi was cast as Heathcliff, a character generally assumed to be Romani, and Margot Robbie as Catherine. The bodice ripper’s titillating poster, featuring its two stars in a lover’s embrace, also positioned the sexually complicated story as a simple, steamy romance.
Unlike Pitt and Sweeney, who attempted

UnitedHealth’s strong first quarter and forecast cheers up Wall Street
UnitedHealth opened the first quarter’s earnings season for insurers with a strong performance, raising its annual profit forecast and surpassing Wall Street expectations for quarterly earnings and revenue.
The upbeat results gave a boost to the shares of the conglomerate, which has faced a series of setbacks over the past two years, including a cyberattack on its technology arm, rising medical costs and the killing of its insurance unit chief, which sparked a public backlash against the industry.
Below are some comments from analysts and investors.
“Bottom line, margins are improving and further gains in profitability could be driven by continued AI deployment and restructuring. This is allowing for a new floor in earnings to feel stronger, adding more investor confidence going forward.”
“1Q26 results look nicely better than optimistic expectations, particularly with a nice MLR beat and sizeable Optum Health outperformance (earned nearly all of adjusted earnings for 2026 in 1Q26)... Good start to the year. It’s early, but a lot of embedded earnings within this business.”
“We believe this was a positive quarter for UNH. Highlighting the quarter was the beat on medical cost trend and the strong performance in Optum Health.”
“While medical cost trends remain elevated, this remained in line with the company’s expectations, which we view as supportive of our belief that medical cost trend acceleration has peaked.”
“Investors are likely showing signs of relief with this mornings premarket on UNH. The stock has had a volatile run over its last few earnings reports, largely dictated by surging medical costs in its Medicare Advantage business and regulatory shifts. While the stock has struggled for much of the past year, it is
currently showing signs of a turnaround, or at least stability that investors are appreciating.”
“Overall, results were strong, as UNH appears poised to return to its consistent beat-and-raise ways. We expect the stock to be strong on this release, which should also support the group.”
“we had expected guidance raises this year, but had

thought Q2 was the more likely first raise. We assume the early raise is likely due to stronger MA performance and possibly improved reserve development from 2025 claims, which would suggest a better jump off point.”
“Key questions to understand magnitude of full-year outperformance will be seasonality of MA related results and prior period development.”
“On balance, we see this as a positive first step for UNH... While investors will want a better understanding of the cadence and dynamics at play at Optum, we think this print should broadly start MCO earnings off on the right foot.”

Trump extends ceasefire with Iran
By LUKE BROADWATER, JONATHAN SWAN, FARNAZ FASSIHI and SOMINI SENGUPTA
President Donald Trump said he was extending a ceasefire with Iran on Tuesday, just hours before it was set to expire. The announcement came after Vice President JD Vance’s trip to Pakistan for a second round of negotiations with Iran was put on hold because, according to a U.S. official, Tehran failed to respond to American positions.
The president made the announcement on Truth Social. He said he had received a request from Pakistan, which is attempting to mediate an end to the war, to hold off any attacks. Trump said a ceasefire would stay in effect until Iran’s “leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.” Iran did not immediately respond to the news.
Trump’s announcement was a marked departure from his comments earlier in the day, when he told CNBC that if Iran did not agree to U.S. demand, “I expect to be bombing.”
He also said the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz would continue.

New Zealand’s capital, Wellington, and the surrounding region were under a state of emergency Tuesday, after heavy rains triggered flash flooding and landslides that swept away cars, forced more than 100 schools to close, and buried roads and homes.
Some areas recorded more than 3 inches of rain within an hour, the country’s weather agency, MetService, said. The emergency declaration, made by the authorities Monday afternoon, gives them more power to respond and to order evacuations. Overnight, authorities urged residents in low-lying areas to relocate until it was safe to return. The state of emergency was lifted in some areas Tuesday.

the United States to lift its naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, called the blockade “an act of war.”
Even if the two sides return to the negotiating table, many sticking points remain, chiefly on Iran’s nuclear program and on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic conduit for
oil and gas. The threat of Iranian attacks has throttled shipping traffic through the strait, prompting an American blockade of Iranian ports that the U.S. Navy says has forced 28 ships to turn around.
Here’s what else we are covering:
— Energy: Oil prices approached $100 a barrel and stocks faded Tuesday as uncertainty clouded the possibility of peace talks.
— Lebanon: Even though a separate 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has mostly held since it went into effect last week, Israel on Tuesday blamed Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, for firing rockets toward Israeli troops in southern Lebanon. The Israeli military has kept up repeated strikes since the truce. Hezbollah later confirmed firing on Israel, saying it was in response to ceasefire violations.
— Tanker: The U.S. military stopped and boarded a sanctioned ship in the Indo-Pacific region that was carrying oil from Iran overnight, the Pentagon said Tuesday. — China: Xi Jinping, China’s top leader, called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz — the first time he has done so — underscoring the war’s impact on Chinese economic interests.
one man is missing after the property he was living in was hit by floodwaters and debris, police said. Greater Wellington, which covers about 3,100 square miles on the southern tip of North Island, has more than half a million residents.
The heaviest of the rainfall had concluded by Tuesday morning, but more wet weather was expected in the coming days, MetService said. “Sodden soils increase the risk for slips, and local flooding remains an issue,” it warned.
Andrew Little, Wellington’s mayor, said it would take a while to clean up the city and urged people to stay indoors until the wet weather eased.
“Trees have come down, manhole covers have been lifted, and there is debris in the streets,” he said in a Facebook video Tuesday. “You must keep yourself safe.”
Images posted on social media showed roads and homes partially buried by landslides, a car perched on top of a fence, and muddy floodwaters rushing through homes and businesses.
On Tuesday, 120 schools were closed across the capital region, the education department said.
Dana McDonald, the lead teacher at the South Wellington Montessori School, said about 3 feet of water had washed through the preschool, which can cater to as many as 29 students, and “destroyed everything.”
“We’d just set up for term two, which was meant to start yesterday, and the classroom was really ready for the children, and now we’ve got absolutely nothing,” she said.
McDonald said work was underway to repair the school, with the walls and carpets already removed, while school officials searched for a temporary campus.
The weather agency said the rain would track farther north in the coming days before gradually easing.
Gunman kills Canadian tourist and wounds others at Mexican pyramids
By EMILIANO RODRÍGUEZ MEGA and CYNTIA BARRERA DÍAZ
One Canadian tourist was shot dead and several other people were wounded, including U.S. nationals, officials said, when a man opened fire Monday at one of Mexico’s most popular tourist destinations, the Teotihuacán pyramids just outside Mexico City.
The gunman then shot and killed himself, authorities said.
State and federal security forces arrived at the archaeological site after receiving an emergency call, according to a statement by the local security ministry of Mexico state, which is adjacent to Mexico City, the capital.
Two people were found dead, “one of whom was likely the shooter,” the statement said. Later Monday evening, federal authorities released a list with the names of 13 other tourists who had been injured. Seven of them had gunshot wounds, including two minors ages 6 and 13 from Colombia and Brazil. They were all taken to hospitals. It was unclear how some of the tourists had been injured.
Six U.S. citizens, ranging in age from 26 to 61, were among those injured during the gunfire, including two who had been shot, according to the list.
The shooting at the Teotihuacán pyramids is believed to have been the first such violence in the site’s modern history.
Mexico’s security Cabinet said in a statement that a Canadian woman had been killed during the shooting but did not identify her. A spokesperson for the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City said that it could not share any personal information about the victim because of Canadian privacy laws.
Videos circulating online Monday show tourists ducking at the bottom of the Pyramid of the Moon, the second largest in Teotihuacán, amid the sound of gunfire.
“Call the police!” a woman is heard screaming. A lone figure is seen on the pyramid next to what appears to be a group of people lying down nearby.
Laura Torres, a tourist visiting Teotihuacán, told reporters at the scene that she had been walking in when she heard the gunfire.
“I saw the guy shooting from up on the pyramid, and yeah, there were a lot of people there,” said Torres, who recounted hearing up to 20 shots.
Tourist guides who had brought groups of people to the site began to lead them out, she said. Then she saw a tourist being shot.
“She was lying about halfway up the pyramid,” Torres said. “This shouldn’t have happened.”
Prosecutors in Mexico state said in a statement Monday that the gunman had been identified as Julio César Jasso Ramírez, a Mexican national. He seemed to have acted alone, the statement added.
“This seems to have been a direct attack, but we cannot speculate,” Castañeda said, adding that at least one handgun had been recovered. The gunman seemed to have acted alone, he said.
Anita Anand, Canada’s minister of foreign affairs, confirmed that a Canadian national had been killed during the shooting and said that another — a 29-year-old woman, according to the Mexican government’s list — had been wounded. Consular officials were providing assistance to their families, she said.
“What happened today in Teotihuacán pains us deeply,” President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico said on social media. She added that the Mexican government had been in contact with the Canadian Embassy.
“I have instructed the security Cabinet to thoroughly investigate these events and provide all necessary support,” she said.
Mexican officials were also in touch with the embassies of the other tourists who had been wounded, eight of whom remained hospitalized by Monday evening, officials said.
A spokesperson for the Mexico state prosecutor’s office said an investigation had been opened.
Teotihuacán, an ancient city of pyramids and palaces that predates the Aztecs, had as many as 125,000 people living there at its peak. The site attracts thousands
of tourists every year, both foreigners and nationals who are drawn by its three titanic pyramids. To this day, researchers continue making discoveries there.
In 2025, Teotihuacán was Mexico’s second-most-popular archaeological site, with 1.8 million visitors that year. For the upcoming World Cup, the Mexico state government announced it was preparing an immersive night show for tourists there. Mexican officials expect the soccer tournament to attract nearly 5.5 million fans. To safeguard the matches, Mexico is planning to deploy 10,000 security forces across the country.
Last month, the Canadian government urged its citizens in a regular security advisory to “exercise a high degree of caution” while visiting Mexico.
Despite high rates of violence across Mexico, the Teotihuacán archaeological zone is generally considered safe for visitors. Tourists have died at the site, often after falling or suffering health issues.

Tim Cook will step down as Apple CEO
By KALLEY HUANG and TRIPP MICKLE
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said Monday that he would step down after nearly 15 years running an operation that rode the wild popularity of the iPhone to become one of the most influential and valuable companies in the world.
Cook, 65, will move into a new role as Apple’s executive chair in September and be succeeded in the company’s corner office by John Ternus, the 50-year-old head of Apple’s hardware engineering.
Cook’s resignation will end one of the most successful management runs in the history of U.S. business. During his tenure, Apple’s annual profit quadrupled to more than $110 billion, while its value ballooned more than tenfold to $4 trillion.
Cook replaced Apple co-founder Steve Jobs shortly before Jobs’ death in 2011, having earned a reputation for perfecting the nuts and bolts of a global consumer electronics business. Apple has since defined how a modern technology company operates, with products assembled in a supply chain that stretches from the giant operations that Cook helped create in China to India and Brazil and a popular retail business that operates on five continents.

The longtime chief executive of the iPhone maker said on Monday, April 20, 2026, that he will step down. He will be replaced by John Ternus, the company’s head of hardware engineering. (Jim Wilson/The New York Times)
“He stepped into the world’s biggest shoes — the biggest shoes that anybody on the planet has ever had to step into — and he’s done an amazing job,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s chief financial officer from 2004 to 2014.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and rose through its ranks as he oversaw the development of Macs and iPads. He will be Apple’s eighth CEO since its founding 50 years ago and its third since Jobs returned in 1997 to pull the company from the brink of bankruptcy.
“I am filled with optimism about what we can achieve in the years to come,” Ternus said in a statement. “I promise to lead with the values and vision that have come to define this special place for half a century,” he added.
Ternus will take over a company that has not created a new mainstream product in a number of years and faces questions about its business. Apple has lost several top executives in recent months, worrying investors about the depth of its next generation of managers and its long-term strategy, particularly with artificial intelligence. The company has largely stayed on the sidelines as the rest of the technology industry has committed to spending hundreds of billions of dollars developing AI.
Apple is also navigating increasingly choppy political waters, including whiplash over the Trump administration’s tariffs, a looming antitrust trial and geopolitical tensions with China.
In recent years, Cook, out of necessity, had become
the technology industry’s leading diplomat, making regular visits to Washington and Beijing to try to manage the often conflicting agendas of President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, China’s leader.
As executive chair, he “will assist with certain aspects of the company, including engaging with policymakers around the world,” Apple said in a press statement.
“This is not goodbye,” Cook said in a letter on Apple’s website. But, he added, it is a “moment of transition.”
Apple remains one of the most profitable companies in the world, thanks to the stability of sales of its iPhones, other products including the Apple Watch, and services including iCloud and Apple Pay.
Cook joined Apple in 1998 from the computer maker Compaq, transformed how Apple managed its product inventory and became its chief operating officer in 2007. In a 2010 commencement speech at Auburn University, he said Apple and Jobs had provided him with “the opportunity to engage in truly meaningful work every day.”
Although Cook rarely discussed his personal life, other than his childhood in Alabama and his college years at Auburn, he also became one of the most prominent gay executives in corporate America.
Despite years of success, Cook never shook the perception that he was not a technological visionary like Jobs. When he took over the helm of Apple in 2011, the release of new iPhones had already become cultural touchstones, as closely watched as the latest blockbusters from Hollywood.
“It’s very difficult to innovate when you’re the size
of Apple,” said Mike Slade, who advised Apple and Jobs on product and marketing strategy from 1998 to 2004. He added that Cook’s legacy was “continuous improvement in every aspect and fantastic new products.”
In recent years, Apple has raised the prices of its devices and leaned on its services for growth, selling more software to be used in the more than 1 billion iPhones in use around the world. Its services business has steadily grown over the past decade, most recently accounting for about a quarter of its annual revenue.
But Apple has been seeing mixed results in other parts of its business, with slowing growth from wearables, which include the Apple Watch and AirPods, and sometimes middling sales in China. In 2024, the company made a disappointing foray into so-called augmented reality through its headset, the Vision Pro. Apple’s relationship with China has otherwise become a vulnerability. In addition to the country’s accounting, at times, for a quarter of Apple’s annual revenue, the company makes an estimated 80% of its iPhones in China.
Ternus joined Apple four years after his graduation from the University of Pennsylvania in 1997. He initially worked on screens for Apple’s Macs and eventually became a key lieutenant of Dan Riccio, a longtime engineering leader at the company. As Riccio rose through the ranks at Apple, Ternus’ responsibilities expanded to include teams working on Macs and iPads. Ternus succeeded Riccio in 2021.
Apple also said Monday that Johny Srouji, who has led its work on its own chips, had been promoted to chief hardware officer. In addition to helming hardware technologies at the company, Srouji will take over Ternus’ role overseeing hardware engineering.
Now, Ternus will prepare to face a concern that dogged Cook throughout his tenure: Can Apple create new, industry-changing products without Jobs at the helm?
“John is going to have to find a way to have Apple make products that make a dent in the universe again,” said Cameron Rogers, who worked at Apple in product marketing from 2005 to 2022. “Big companies don’t die, they become irrelevant.”

What travelers should know about measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases
By PERRI KLASS, M.D.
With misinformation and disinformation, vaccination rates for measles are worryingly down, and other serious — though vaccinepreventable — diseases are also showing up, among them, whooping cough, rotavirus, meningitis and serious cases of influenza. Doctors are also concerned about the reemergence of polio.
In the United States, there were more cases of measles last year than in any other year since the virus was declared eliminated in 2000, a status the country is now poised to lose. There have been outbreaks in South Carolina, Texas and Utah, but cases have also been reported in more than 30 states.
Measles is the most infectious virus known, so travel raises fears that it will spread. One of the most notorious U.S. outbreaks was travel related: a 2014 exposure at Disneyland.
Pertussis, or whooping cough, was never eliminated, but cases have been rising; it can be fatal in infants and young children. Additionally, doctors worry that unvaccinated people are vulnerable to other infections, such as meningococcal meningitis, which caused an outbreak this year in Britain. And in a population where children are not protected by the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR), pregnant women also have to worry about exposure to rubella, which can cause devastating damage to the fetus.
The good news is that these diseases can be prevented by vaccines. Making sure that your eligible family members are fully vaccinated before travel can help keep them safe.
Stay safe in airports, on airplanes and in crowded areas.
Measles not only spreads efficiently, but it also hangs in the air and remains infectious for a couple of hours. It also survives on surfaces, as does hepatitis A, rotavirus and influenza.
So you don’t have to be in the room or on the bus with the sick person. The most infectious period for measles begins before the rash appears. People who are coming down with the disease often have runny noses, and yes, there’s virus in the mucus, as well as in their breath, coughs and sneezes.
Those who are not yet completely vaccinated might consider masks — which also protect against other infections — in airports, airplanes and other crowded circumstances. Unvaccinated and immunocompromised people should consider avoiding crowds, especially indoors.
Good hand washing is also important when traveling and helps protect you against more than measles.
Consider your route and destination.
For domestic travel, many states other than Texas, South Carolina and Utah have reported cases. Last December, the New Jersey Department of Health sent out an alert about a measles exposure from a “non-N.J. measles case” at Newark Liberty International Airport. Internationally, measles continues to be a problem; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the top 10 countries for outbreaks, which include India and Mexico, but cases have been reported all over Europe (Spain and Britain have each recently lost their measles-elimination status). The CDC recommends that travelers be vaccinated before traveling.
The CDC also recommends “enhanced precautions” before travel to countries with circulating polio virus; the list includes Britain, Germany and Poland. Be sure you’re immune.
Children should be up-to-date on vaccines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics; adults should check to see if they need pertussis boosters or adult polio boosters. The MMR vaccine cannot be given if you are pregnant, immunocompromised or have recently had certain other vaccines. It also cannot be given to infants under 6 months. Anyone else who needs a vaccine should get it at least two weeks before traveling.
Adults can find out whether they’re immune by getting a measles titer check (a blood test), though anyone born in the United States before 1957 is assumed to have had measles, and therefore developed immunity. From 1963-67 some children got a less effective vaccine; people born through 1989 may have gotten the right vaccine, but only a single dose. If you know you were vaccinated, but aren’t sure whether you had two doses, have your titer checked, or get an additional dose. If traveling to countries where the polio virus is circulating, children should be fully vaccinated, and adults who were vaccinated as children should consider a booster.
Consider early measles vaccination for children. Initial doses of many vaccines are given in the first months of life, offering at least partial protection, but the first MMR dose is normally given at age 1. However, if you’re traveling with a child who is at least 6 months old, they can get the first dose early and then get another when they turn 1. (They will end up getting three doses since they still need two doses at and after age 1 to count as fully vaccinated.)
So, the ideal situation is to have received two doses before travel (two doses are 97% effective at preventing measles). But even those who only get a single dose should have significant protection against severe illness.
What to do if you’ve been exposed.
If you know you’ve been exposed to measles, pertussis, polio or meningitis while traveling, consult a doctor right away. In the case of measles, vaccines or immune globulin may be offered. For pertussis, you may be offered antibiotics. Warn the office before you come in, so they can take precautions. Similarly, if anyone gets sick after a trip, let your doctor know about your travels.
Is measles really a serious disease?
Yes, measles kills more than 100,000 people worldwide every year. There were previously healthy children who died of measles in the United States in 2025; many others have been hospitalized. It is a miserable disease, with high fevers and it can result in permanent neurological damage or lead to a delayed, and fatal, degenerative disease.
“We have been able to prevent measles for 60 years and yet we’re still having this conversation,” said Dr. Adam Ratner, a pediatric infectious disease physician in New York and the author of “Booster Shots: The Urgent Lessons of Measles and the Uncertain Future of Children’s Health.”

Young athletes from ECEDAO to represent Puerto Rico at Penn Relays
By THE STAR STAFF
The Eugenio Guerra Cruz Specialized Sports Community School of the Olympic Hostel (ECEDAO by its initials in Spanish) in Salinas will see a distinguished group of its young athletes represent Puerto Rico at the 130th edition of the prestigious Penn Relays, to be held this Thursday to Saturday at historic Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Recognized as the oldest relay competition in the world, the Penn Relays constitute an iconic event in international track and field, bringing together more than 15,000 participants -- including athletes from high schools, universities and clubs across the United States and other countries.
On March 10 in Villalba, ECEDAO sprinters qualified in the demanding 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter events, thereby securing their presence on this highly competitive stage.
The 4x100-meter relay team will consist of sprinters Víctor D. Alvarado Alvarado, Ishael O. Feliciano Martínez, Yandel K.

Feliciano Martínez and Christian E. Pagán Rodríguez. Meanwhile, in the 4x400-meter event, young Héctor A. Ramos González will take the place of Pagán Rodríguez, thus completing the lineup for this relay race.
Additionally, young Alexis Yariel Torres Gabriel from ECEDAO will make his mark at this prestigious competition by participating in the 5,000-meter race walk -- a discipline in which he has distinguished himself through his consistency, technique, and competitive progression.
The ECEDAO delegation will be led at the event by coach Jan Cancel Olán, a specialist in race walking and track and field. The development of the sprinters has been overseen by coach Beatriz Cruz Nazario -- a former Olympian -- whose work has been fundamental to the team’s preparation and performance. The participation of the aforementioned athletes represents not only a sporting achievement but also a source of pride for their school and Puerto Rico, demonstrating the talent, discipline, and commitment of the new generation of athletes making their mark on the international stage.
How James Harden has made the Cavaliers a ‘better team,’ on and off the court
By JOE VARDON / THE ATHLETIC
James Harden made one request upon joining the Cleveland Cavaliers after being traded in February.
When Harden’s new coach, Kenny Atkinson, heard him make the request, he scrunched his eyes and shook his head. “I’m like, eh, this isn’t my thing,” Atkinson recalled.
Harden’s ask? Would the Cavaliers mind staging walkthroughs in hotel ballrooms on game days with no shootarounds on the road.
“It’s just preparation, detail, you get ready for the game,” Harden said. “Physically, you get out and move around, and mentally you have to be prepared. It’s just preparation man,
especially going into this run that we are about to go into. I think the focus is making sure we know who we’re playing against and individual guys and what they like to do with their tendencies.”
The Cavaliers acquired Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers for Darius Garland in one of the biggest deadline deals of the season, won their first five games with him in uniform, and are 19-7 with him on the court. They are the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference and are up two games to none against the Toronto Raptors in the first round. In those two outings, Harden had 22 points and 10 assists in the first game and 28 points in the second on Monday night.
Harden is one of the NBA’s greatest playmakers, especially in isolation offense, which he has run with mastery for most of his career. But that’s not really the Cavaliers’ offense under Atkinson — they are more of a passing and cutting unit. Which is why, when Atkinson was asked over the last two weeks about acclimating Harden into the team, he marveled at how few changes they had to make to accommodate his game. The walkthrough thing was, Atkinson said, Harden’s only request for change.
“He’s completely adapted to our style of play, which is pretty, I would assume, rare,” Atkinson said.
Harden is an 11-time All-Star and has never missed the playoffs, ever.
Stars wield power in pro sports, and that power can lead to some strange requests of their employers. Michael Jordan insisted on a clause in his first contract with the Chicago Bulls that allowed him to play pickup basketball. It was called a Love of the Game clause. By comparison to some of the other crazy requests in pro sports history, Jordan’s was tame. Roy Oswalt, a former major league pitcher, once negotiated a bulldozer from the Houston Astros for winning playoff games. After his career was finished, Manny Ramírez went to Japan and asked for (and received) unlimited sushi, a Mercedes and a driver, and language in his contract stating that, for him, practices were optional.
Players can also make requests to be traded, but these are more like demands. Kawhi Leonard pushed his way out of San Antonio. Jimmy Butler did it a couple of times. Anthony Davis forced New Orleans to trade him to the Los Angeles Lakers. Kyrie Irving pushed the Cavaliers to trade him in the summer of 2017, and so on.
Quarterback John Elway once threatened to play baseball for the New York Yankees instead of joining the Baltimore Colts, who drafted him in 1983, and they ultimately traded him to Denver. Two decades later, in 2004, Eli Manning succeeded in getting San Diego to trade him immediately after drafting him No. 1.

About Harden’s ballroom request, Atkinson said, “I was like, a little skeptical.” He added: “Then we did it, and we went through it. So we’re like communicating through it and talking through coverages and I’m like, hey, this could be a good thing.”
Most NBA teams, at least occasionally, hold something on the morning of their games called a shootaround. It’s a partial practice, on the court, usually at the arena when on the road, in which coaches go over the opponent’s tendencies and talk about the game plan. Players finish with shooting drills.
But shootarounds can be canceled for any number of reasons, including if the game is the second in consecutive nights, or if the team is in the middle of a tough stretch of travel or practiced the day before. In those situations for the Cavaliers, under Atkinson, they have used individual and team film sessions to prepare for that night’s game.
When Harden arrived via trade, a trade he requested from the Clippers, he was leaving behind a coach in Tyronn Lue who often used ballroom walk-throughs instead of holding shootarounds on the road.
Low-level assistants use athletic tape to re-create on the ballroom floor the lines of a basketball court. Players wear slippers or sandals, walk through the game plan and learn what to expect from their opponents.
“Football, they do it all the time,” Atkinson said. “There are definitely coaches in this league that do it. I’ve been with teams that have done it.” He added: “It’s like, man, I like this. Because they have to talk through their coverage, even if they’re in their slippers.”
The Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell said he used to do ballroom walk-throughs with the Utah Jazz under Quin Snyder. He said committing a game plan to muscle memory carries huge benefits for the game that night.
“You don’t got to go full speed, and you can be in your socks for all we care,” Mitchell said. “Being able to be in certain positions in the morning so that way your brain remembers it at night, I think, that’s something I’ve done my whole career. And every coach is different, right, everybody’s different.”
Have other things changed since Harden’s arrival? Sure.
Atkinson says Cleveland is a better team now. Harden wasn’t the only trade acquisition (Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis also came to the Cavaliers from Sacramento), but it’s clear the Cavaliers view Harden’s size, experience and IQ as upgrades.
Mitchell said the Cavaliers’ offense has changed, a little, to incorporate Harden’s isolation dominance, but also said Harden has fit into their original schemes. He called playing alongside Harden calming, and Utah coach Will Hardy said the combination of Harden and Mitchell on the floor together is “nightmare fuel.”
“We’re not going to completely flip, right?” Mitchell said. “I think that’s a testament to him. We’ve also adjusted, and we knew that when we were going to make the trade, we’re going to have to adjust, for sure. And for him, you see how easy it is for him to make these plays, right?”
Harden said he was comfortable with the Cavaliers’ schemes and with his new teammates. And, it appears, their practice habits.
“That’s why you listen to your players, too,” Atkinson said, circling back to the walk-throughs. “At first I was like, eh, I wasn’t a big fan. Let’s talk in two months and see if I still like it.”
Just tape on a ballroom floor. Players in slippers.
For Harden, that’s a pretty modest request.
