rivers seeking to benefit from the maximum discount available under the traffic fine amnesty established by the Department of Transportation and Public Works must pay close attention to the payment options offered on the CESCO Digital platform, or they risk missing out on greater savings, the Office of the Ombudsman for the Citizen warned on Tuesday.
As part of an awareness effort aimed at thousands of drivers who owe traffic fines and wish to take advantage of the amnesty, Puerto Rico Ombudsman Edwin García Feliciano emphasized that citizens should take the time to review all available alternatives and make an informed decision about which option is most convenient and financially beneficial.
García Feliciano said that when users enter the CESCO Digital platform, the system may initially display a payment plan option that offers around a 10% discount. However, this is not necessarily the best option available for many drivers, making it essential for users to continue reading and navigating through the system.
“Many citizens may be interested in accessing a higher discount of up to 40 percent, which appears later in the process,” the ombudsman said. “But the reality is that people tend to select the first option presented, without realizing they have the opportunity to receive a greater discount if they continue navigating the portal.”
The ombudsman confirmed that the issue was identified by the special prosecutor for public transportation, José O. Pérez Rosa, who examined the standard fine payment

process offered through the application.
As general guidance, García Feliciano issued a key warning to help citizens avoid setbacks and meet their expectations for household budget relief. He noted that once a user selects a payment plan on the CESCO Digital platform to benefit from the amnesty, they may not be able to later switch to another option that offers a greater discount.
“This is one of the fundamental aspects of the difficulty citizens are experiencing,” García Feliciano said.
For that reason, he stressed the importance of carefully reading each screen, reviewing all available options, and avoiding the automatic selection of the first alternative presented.

The president of the General Student Council at the University of Puerto Rico’s Mayagüez Campus (UPRRUM), Tainary Delgado, announced that the council has approved an indefinite strike calling for the removal of UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde and RUM Interim Chancellor Miguel Muñoz Muñoz.
Although Delgado insisted that the action being taken is not technically a strike, the student leader urged the university community not to cross picket lines established as part of the protest.
“We want a national assembly to be coordinated and to stop political interference within the University of Puerto
Rico. Since our president took office in July, all processes have been handled behind closed doors, and when we demand transparency -- when we ask for reports and metrics -- she is not open to dialogue,” Delgado said. “In addition, having Muñoz in a position of trust appointed by the president only increases distrust.”
Delgado also addressed the suspension of financial aid provided by Fundación Ceiba for university students, stating that the pause has created concern and academic instability within the student body.
The indefinite demonstration has been in effect since a special assembly held on Monday, and will continue until students receive concrete responses and actions addressing their demands, the student leader added.

Members of the Puerto Rico Mayors Association met Tuesday morning to discuss House Bill 1183, a measure proposed by La Fortaleza aimed at reforming the island’s permitting system. While the Popular Democratic Party mayors expressed broad support for modernizing the process, they emphasized that the bill, as currently drafted, requires significant revisions to protect municipal autonomy, citizen participation and environmental safeguards.
“We all agree that the permitting system must be reformed,” said Naguabo Mayor Miraidaliz Rosario Pagán, who is first vice president of the Mayors Association. “We firmly believe in economic development, citizen participation, and environmental protection. However, House Bill 1183, in its current form, needs improvement, and we come to La Fortaleza with a positive attitude and concrete solutions.”
Guayama Mayor O’brain Vázquez Molina, the Mayors Association’s second vice president, said the group raised specific concerns about the measure with Gov. Jenniffer González Colón and her team. Vázquez Molina said the bill would create an excessive centralization of permitting authority within the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC by its acronym in Spanish).

“Experience shows that the opposite approach works best,” Vázquez Molina said. “Decentralization is desirable, not centralization. There are already permits consortia in place, led by mayors from both political parties, that are functioning effectively. These should not be disrupted.”
Aguada Mayor Christian Cortés Feliciano, who serves as secretary of the Mayors Association’s board, highlighted concerns over
provisions that would limit the role of territorial land use plans. The mayor, an engineer, noted that those plans are developed by planning specialists and have legal standing, expertise the DDEC does not possess.
“Even more troubling,” Cortés Feliciano added, “is that House Bill 1183 would eliminate community boards. We believe citizen participation should be expanded, not reduced. While we recognize the need for faster
permitting processes and stronger consortia, this must be done without undermining local governance.”
Several mayors also pointed to broader best practices within the United States and internationally. Vega Baja Mayor Marcos Cruz Molina said that in no U.S. jurisdiction do state governments directly issue local permits.
“That authority lies with municipalities or counties,” Cruz Molina said. “Worldwide, best practices show that municipalities are better facilitators of development when operating under uniform criteria. This approach works, and that’s why it continues to gain traction.”
Coamo Mayor Juan Carlos García Padilla tressed the importance of territorial land use plans as tools for economic development. He warned that House Bill 1183 would downgrade those plans from legally binding documents to regulatory guidelines.
“Our proposals, which we are presenting today at La Fortaleza, are designed to promote a permitting reform that is agile and efficient, while also protecting municipal autonomy and local decision-making,” García Padilla said. “We trust that by working together, this legislation can be improved.”
The Mayors Association reaffirmed its willingness to collaborate with the executive branch to achieve a permitting reform that balances efficiency, transparency and local governance.

The Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico has approved, with observations, a proposed $47 million work order between the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for major infrastructure work related to the Freedom Connection Project, which includes a major natural gas pipeline.
In a letter dated April 9 and addressed to PREPA General Counsel Alexis G. Rivera Medina, the oversight board’s general counsel, Jaime A. El Koury, stated that the board completed its review of the proposed work order pursuant to Section 204(b)(2) of the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act (PROMESA).
The work order falls under a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between PREPA and the Corps of Engineers, executed on Feb. 25 of this year, and is designed to support project management, planning, and construction services for PREPA’s thermal generation assets. The work is part of the federally funded Freedom Connection Project, backed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
According to the oversight board, the proposed work
order is the first issued under the 10-year MOA and includes preconstruction services, early procurement activities, early construction packages, and the construction of a 4.2-mile natural gas pipeline connecting the San Juan Terminal to the Palo Seco Power Plant. The maximum payable amount under the work order is $47 million, with a projected completion date of Dec. 18, 2026.
PREPA certified that the full cost of the work order will be covered by federal DOE funds, and the oversight board determined that sufficient budgeted funds exist for fiscal year 2026 to cover the contract, based on PREPA’s submission. The funds are allocated under a designated federal account, according to the board.
The oversight board emphasized that its review was limited to determining compliance with PROMESA’s contract review requirements, including whether the contract promotes market competition and aligns with PREPA’s certified fiscal plan. The review does not constitute a legal or procurement compliance review, nor does it involve due diligence or background checks of the contracting parties.
The board noted that any material changes to the work order or amendments, extensions, or additional work orders
under the MOA must be submitted for further review and approval prior to execution.

District 14 (Arecibo and
Edgar Robles Rivera, who chairs the Consumer Affairs Committee in the island House of Representatives, filed a measure on Tuesday to order an investigation into the state of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority’s provisional pumping stations in the sectors of La Puntilla and El Fuerte in Arecibo.
The legislative action stems from a growing concern about the permanence of systems that, although they were installed as temporary solutions after the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, today continue to operate without a permanent solution, generating constant risks for the population.
In La Puntilla, recognized as the gastronomic heart of Arecibo, the impact is even more delicate
because it is a coastal area of high historical, tourist and commercial value, visited by residents and tourists throughout the year.
Any failure in its infrastructure not only represents a health problem, but also a direct threat to economic development and the image of one of the northern coastal municipality’s most emblematic spaces.
Overflows during rain events have already had consequences on public health, the environment and commercial activity, impacting both merchants and visitors.
The situation has worsened, meanwhile, due to the possibility of a new atmospheric event, the lawmaker noted.
A failure at the facilities during an emergency could result in sewage spills, prolonged service interruptions, and an immediate crisis for residents,
businesses and visitors, Robles Rivera said.
Added to this is the continuous operation of an electric generator that uses diesel, whose emissions negatively affect air quality and represent an additional concern for the health of those who live and work in the area.
In the El Fuerte sector, the reality is no different, the legislator said. There the pumping station suffers recurring failures, leaving it out of service during rains or power outages, which Robles Rivera said directly impacts communities that depend on the system for essential services.

The legislative action arises from a growing concern about the permanence of systems that, although they were installed as temporary solutions after the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, today continue to operate without a permanent solution, posing constant risks for the population.

District IV (Mayagüez-Aguadilla) Sen. Jeison Rosa Ramos filed Senate Bill 1177 earlier this week, a measure aimed at creating and officially establishing the “Joyuda, Sabor Costero” tourist and gastronomic destination in the municipality of Cabo Rojo, with the purpose of strengthening the economic development of the western region and enhancing its culinary and tourist offerings.
The measure proposes ordering the Puerto Rico Tourism Company to develop a strategic plan for the development, marketing and promotion of the coastal fishing village and surrounding area, as well as the implementation of a signage system and organization of the tourist route that integrates restaurants, hotels and other attractions.
“Joyuda represents one of Puerto Rico’s main gastronom-
ic assets, with enormous potential to continue growing as a regional economic engine,” Rosa Ramos said. “This measure seeks to give structure, visibility, and strategic direction to a resource that is already emblematic for the island.”
The legislator highlighted that the initiative, which he filed on Monday, also promotes interagency coordination and collaboration with the private sector, key elements in maximizing economic impact and improving visitor experience.
“With this proposal, we seek not only to strengthen Joyuda’s identity as a destination, but also to support our small and midsize businesses, generate jobs, and position Puerto Rico more competitively in gastronomic tourism,” he said.
The measure also includes the development of digital tools and informational material that facilitates access for local and foreign tourists to the area’s offerings, thus promoting an integrated and sustainable tourism model.

Rep. Tony Gonzales, a Texas Republican accused of having a coercive sexual relationship with a staff member who later killed herself, said earlier this week that he would resign from Congress amid growing bipartisan outcry from House members.
Gonzales, a third-term congressman whose border district stretches from San Antonio to El Paso, was embroiled in a bitter primary fight when text messages became public that documented his pursuit of a female staff member. He announced last month that he was withdrawing from the race.
“There is a season for everything and God has a plan for us all,” Gonzales said in a social media post Monday. “When Congress returns tomorrow, I will file my retirement from office.”
His message came hours after Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., announced his own intention to resign from Congress amid allegations that he had sexually assaulted a former staff member. Both congressmen had faced calls to step down. Gonzales had been resisting those calls since earlier this year, when text messages he had sent to the female staff member, Regina Santos-Aviles, became public.
At first, it appeared that Gonzales would be able to remain in Congress after he said that he would drop his bid for reelection. But after the accusations against Swalwell came to light, pressure grew in Congress to push out both members, as well as others.
Santos-Aviles was working in Gonzales’ Uvalde district
office when he sent her “sexual texts” in 2024, according to her husband’s lawyer, Bobby Barrera, who reviewed the messages.
Another worker in the Uvalde office shared a text exchange with The New York Times in which Santos-Aviles told the co-worker of an “affair with our boss.”
Santos-Aviles killed herself in September 2025 by setting herself on fire, according to the Uvalde Police Department, a

horrific event that drew immediate scrutiny in the area.
Gonzales denied any sexual relationship at the time. But he admitted to the affair in March, one day after he was forced into a runoff election in the Republican primary, calling it a “lapse in judgment” and a “mistake.” He maintained that he had nothing to do with Santos-Aviles’ death.
Gonzales was then accused of pursuing a second staff member, whom he reportedly pressed for nude photographs and sex in 2020, according to explicit text messages published by the San Antonio Express-News. The Times has not verified them.
In his social media message Monday, Gonzales did not say when he would officially step down from Congress.
It was not immediately clear whether Gov. Greg Abbott, a Republican, would call a special election to fill Gonzales’ seat before the November election. Democrats have performed well in recent special elections around the country since last year, including in Texas districts such as Gonzales’ that were drawn to heavily favor a Republican candidate.
A spokesperson for Abbott said he did not have more information to share.
Even before the accusations surfaced, Gonzalez faced a strong primary challenge from Brandon Herrera, a gun rights advocate and YouTuber.
Herrera became the party’s nominee in the November election after Gonzales dropped his reelection bid. He celebrated Gonzales’ announcement Monday.
“Nature is healing,” Herrera said in a social media post.

Vice President JD Vance, the highest-ranking Catholic in the federal government, said in an interview on Fox News on Monday that the pope should stay out of American affairs.
Vance, a convert to Catholicism who is about to publish a book detailing his turn to the faith, brushed off a backlash among Christians across the political spectrum to President Donald Trump’s attacks against Pope Leo XIV. He said “that in some cases it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality.” Trump has clashed with the pontiff over matters of war and immigration, and on Sunday attacked him as “weak on crime.”
“Stick to matters of, you know, what’s going on in the Catholic Church,” Vance said when asked if he agreed with Trump’s attacks against the pope. “And let the president of the United States stick to dictating American public policy.” He added: “When they are in conflict, they are in conflict. I don’t worry about it too much.”
He continued: “I think it’s a natural thing. I’m sure it will happen in the future and it’s not that big of a deal that it happened in the past.”
Vance converted to Catholicism in 2019 at age 35, after private instruction with Dominican friars in Cincinnati. But his newfound faith has come with complications, as his views, par-
ticularly on immigration, have prompted strong denunciations from leaders in the Vatican and are in opposition to the priorities set by Leo, the first American pope.
The clash between Trump and the Vatican came just days after Vance and a team of American diplomats failed to reach a peace deal with Iran amid a cease-fire in the conflict. Leo is one of the world’s most powerful critics of the U.S. war with Iran, and has sharply disagreed with suggestions from the Trump administration that the war has divine sanction.
In a recent homily, Leo said that the Christian mission had often been “distorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.”
Vance, who has often viciously attacked critics in much the same manner as Trump, offered a diplomatic tone as he spoke of Leo. “I think it’s a good thing, actually, that the pope is advocating for the things that he cares about,” the vice president said, adding: “We’re also going to disagree on substantive questions from time to time. I think that’s a totally reasonable thing.”
The vice president’s suggestion that Leo “stick to matters of morality” is also a notable distinction. Being a Roman Catholic requires acknowledgment of and adherence to the pope’s authority over the church, but not his political views. President John F. Kennedy, defending his Catholic faith during his 1960 presidential campaign, said that he believed in an America
“where no public official either requests or accepts instructions on public policy from the pope.”
The president’s social media tirade against Pope Leo on Sunday night accused him of being too liberal, “weak on crime,” and “terrible for foreign policy.” He even falsely claimed credit for the pope’s election.
Leo, speaking Monday at the start of a trip to Africa, told reporters he had “no fear of the Trump administration.” He added that he was not afraid of “speaking out loudly about the message of the Gospel, which is what I believe I am here to do.”
Vance was also asked about the president’s posting of an AI-generated image that depicted him as a Jesus-like figure, said that the president “was posting a joke.” Trump, speaking at the White House, told reporters that he had deleted that post, and Vance said that was done because Trump “recognized that a lot of people weren’t understanding his humor in that case.”
Earlier, Trump, in an interview with CBS News, said that he had meant the post to portray him as a doctor.
“I viewed that as a picture of me being a doctor in fixing — you had the Red Cross right there, you had, you know, medical people surrounding me,” Trump said in that interview. “And I was like the doctor, you know, as a little fun playing the doctor and making people better. So that’s what it was viewed as. That’s what most people thought.”

The Environmental Protection Agency announced late last week that it would weaken cleanup requirements for hundreds of sites that contain waste from burning coal, a move that environmental groups said threatens drinking water for millions of people.
The move is a victory for the coal industry, which had chafed at a regulation imposed during the Biden administration that required companies to examine the condition of coal ash sites at inactive power plants, calling it overly burdensome. The EPA said it would repeal that 2024 rule, as well as modify other cleanup requirements that have been in place for more than a decade.
Coal ash is the waste left behind after coal is burned for electricity. It contains a toxic mix of metals and other pollutants, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium and mercury, which can contaminate groundwater if not properly stored.
Lee Zeldin, the EPA administrator, called the changes “commonsense” and said the rule would improve the way companies comply with groundwater monitoring and cleanup. He said the changes reflect a commitment to “energy dominance,” President Donald Trump’s shorthand for producing more fossil fuels in the United States, including coal, oil and natural gas.
“Our proposed changes will increase transparency and promote resource recovery while continuing to protect human health and the environment for all Americans now and into the future,” Zeldin said in a statement.
Trump has launched a major effort to revive the struggling coal industry. He has ordered the Energy Department to prevent closures of power plants, moved to open 13.1 million acres of federal land for coal mining, and directed
hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade plants to extend their lifespans. The EPA under Zeldin has already proposed erasing greenhouse gas limits on coal-fired power plants and weakening restrictions on the industry’s emissions of mercury, a powerful neurotoxin that can impair babies’ brain development.
In December, the EPA delayed the enforcement of coal ash standards. But Thursday’s move would scrap many of them altogether. The proposal would loosen standards for monitoring and protecting groundwater near some coal ash sites. It also would allow companies to assess groundwater contamination 150 or more meters from a coal ash dump, rather than at the dump’s edge, creating what environmental groups dubbed a “zone of contamination.”
“EPA is turning its back on communities that live near hundreds of toxic waste dumps,” said Lisa Evans, a senior counsel at Earthjustice, an environmental group. She said the changes would weaken the cleanup and closure standards of toxic dumps that are contaminating water supplies.
“It’s walking away from science by capitulating to industry’s bottom lines,” Evans said.
A report issued by Earthjustice and other watchdog groups in 2022 found that more than 90% of the country’s coal plants are contaminating water across 43 states. The study examined 292 sites, which were first ordered to report contamination levels in 2015 under the Obama administration.
That was when the federal government began to tighten regulations, after disastrous spills sent mercury, cadmium, arsenic and other heavy metals from the ash into water supplies. In 2008, a six-story-tall dike holding back a massive pond of coal waste at a plant in Kingston, Tennessee, collapsed, releasing more than 1 billion gallons of ash and slurry into the surrounding community.

The rules imposed stringent inspection and monitoring requirements at coal plants and mandated that plants install technology to protect water supplies from contamination.
The Biden administration tightened those rules, and in 2022, for the first time, the government required coal plant owners to clean coal ash sites at shuttered and dormant power plants.
The new EPA plan would return much of the decision-making to states. The proposal Thursday would let local permitting agencies bypass national standards on a case-by-case basis.
Michelle Bloodworth, the president of America’s Power, a coal industry trade group, said she was still reviewing the proposal but said “we appreciate EPA’s efforts to address many of the problems and challenges” with the government’s coal ash program.

On Saturday, the day before the election in Hungary, I went to Puspokladany, a run-down town of about 16,000 in the northeastern part of the country, for the penultimate rally of the opposition leader, Peter Magyar. Though the region has traditionally been a stronghold of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, the square where Magyar spoke was overflowing; there seemed to be at least 1,000 people, many of them teenagers and young families. Over and over, Magyar beseeched the crowd, “Do not be afraid!” The crowd, in turn, broke into a chant: “We are not afraid!”
I asked a woman I met in the crowd, Mariann Szabo, to explain Magyar’s words: What had people been afraid of? An elementary schoolteacher and mother of two, Szabo said that people like her, who worked in the public sector, feared that if they were seen to oppose Fidesz, they could lose their jobs and thus their ability to survive. That fear kept many people quiet about their politics. Before Magyar’s campaign, Szabo knew there were others in her town who didn’t like Orban, but not how many.
Suddenly, it seemed as if everything was about to change. “The only moment you can compare it to is 1989,” she said, when, just before the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hungary’s communist dictatorship came to an end.
On Sunday, it happened: Orban was defeated. In an election with the highest voter turnout in Hungary’s democratic

María
history, Magyar’s Tisza Party won a two-thirds supermajority, enough to alter the constitution that Orban had rewritten to shore up his power. In Budapest, Hungarians thronged the bank of the Danube across from the city’s majestic neo-Gothic parliament, cheering, waving flags and popping Champagne. When Orban’s concession speech played on a giant screen, the 50-year-old Zoli Kertesz exclaimed, “This is music!”
Some admirers of Orban have argued that the fact that he lost proves he was never an autocrat to begin with. What it really demonstrates, however, is that opposition to Fidesz was so strong it was able to overwhelm all the structures Orban put in place to protect his rule: wildly distorted voting districts, a captured media, state-sponsored propaganda, local patronage networks, and widespread threats and intimidation.
Agnes Kunhalmi, a member of parliament and the former co-president of the Hungarian Socialist Party, told me that when she was recruiting candidates in 2022, a school principal turned her down for fear that his daughter, a teacher, would be fired if he ran. Another declined because he worried his son would be cut off from a business arrangement with a Fideszcontrolled company. On the stump, Magyar constantly said that Orban was running a “mafia state.” If that hadn’t resonated, he probably wouldn’t have won by so much.
In recent days, as it became increasingly clear that Orban was losing, some American and British conservatives argued that his ultimate success lay in destroying the Hungarian left. “The reason Peter Magyar has a chance to beat Orban,” wrote Rod Dreher, the doyen of American conservatives in Budapest, is because “he accepts, at least publicly, all the things Orban stands for.”
There is a grain of truth to this. Hungary’s election, like Poland’s election in 2023, was a choice between the center right and the authoritarian right. Magyar voted to keep resisting illegal migration, an issue Orban is known for. Last year, when more than 100,000 people defied Orban’s attempt to ban a gay pride parade by marching in Budapest, Magyar didn’t attend. Kunhalmi told me that the parliament elected on Sunday will be the first since 1989 with no left-wing representation, in part because many progressive candidates stood down to avoid splitting the anti-Orban vote. Kunhalmi withdrew her own candidacy two weeks ago, making election day bittersweet.
But it is a mistake to understate the profound differences between Orban and Magyar, or at least what Magyar is promising. Magyar campaigned on a clean break from the existing order — a message Democrats in the United States might learn from — pledging to prosecute those who’ve enriched themselves at public expense. In the run-up to the election, people in Hungary spoke less about a change in leadership than a change in regime, from one that is Russian-aligned and kleptocratic, with the ruling party embedded in virtually every institution, to one that is free, liberal and oriented toward Europe. If Magyar was just a slightly less corrupt version of Orban, President Donald Trump

and Russian President Vladimir Putin wouldn’t have cared so much about thwarting him.
The geopolitical consequences of Magyar’s victory could be profound. Under Orban, Hungary has vetoed aid to Ukraine and sanctions on both Russia and Israel. Magyar’s movement is hostile to Russia; people at his rallies have taken up the chant “Russians, go home,” a slogan from the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. “There is a strong narrative of commitment to the European Union and NATO,” said Zsuzsanna Végh, an analyst at the German Marshall Fund. And since Magyar doesn’t have a personal relationship with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, she said, “some sanctions against Israel would likely be acceptable” to a Tisza government.
And while Magyar didn’t march in the Pride parade, he’s unlikely to demonize LGBTQ+ people the way Orban did. Among those celebrating by the Danube on Sunday night were Eszter Kalocsai, a 30-year-old bisexual woman, and Milan Gabriel Berki, a 24-year-old gay man. They were delirious with joy. Kalocsai said she’s spent the last 10 years hiding her attraction to women. “It’s amazing!” she cried. “I feel like I can go out and say that I love all people! Oh, my God!” Berki added, “The feeling is overwhelming.” Magyar told people not to be afraid, and they weren’t.

When the British rock group Oasis began its reunion tour last summer, after more than a decade of feuding between its leaders, brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, the band appeared unconvinced that America cared much for it.
“You have one last chance to prove that you loved us all along,” the band said in announcing the tour.
Oasis now has proof that it is, indeed, celebrated here: The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will soon add the group to its pantheon.
The band is a member of the 41st annual class of performer inductees, along with Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan. The inductees were announced Monday night, during a Rock Hall-themed episode of “American Idol” on ABC.
This year’s group, which encompasses rock, punk, R&B and hip-hop, will officially enter the hall Nov. 14 in a ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, according to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. The ceremony will stream in December on ABC and Disney+.
Vandross, who died in 2005, Collins and WuTang Clan, the Staten Island supergroup that helped define the sound of 1990s New York rap, were accepted on their first nomination.

Collins, who first entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 as a member of the British band Ge-

Sade performs during her “Once in a Lifetime”
nesis, will now be honored for his solo work, which includes seven No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
The hall’s induction ceremony often takes on some anticipatory excitement. Last year, fans wondered if Meg White, whose band the White Stripes was being honored, would attend. (The drummer, who is now rarely seen in public, skipped the ceremony.) A similar question will most likely surround Sade, who is known for avoiding the spotlight and whose fans know little about her. Her most recent original album, “Soldier of Love,” was released 16 years ago, and she has not performed publicly since 2011, according to her website.
Other honorees this year include rappers Queen Latifah and MC Lyte, as well as Latin artist Celia Cruz, Afrobeat star Fela Kuti and country-rock pioneer Gram Parsons. They will receive the early influence award, recognizing artists whose sound or performance style has helped shaped music.
The musical excellence citation will go to songwriter Linda Creed, a pillar of the “Philly Sound,” and to three producers: Arif Mardin, Jimmy Miller and Rick Rubin.
Ed Sullivan, the television host and impresario who died more than a half-century ago, will receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award, which is given to nonperforming industry professionals who have had a major influence on the creative development of rock ’n’ roll.
Artists become eligible for nomination into the hall 25 years after they have released their first recording. More than 1,000 music historians, industry professionals and previously inducted artists vote on the inductees.
Several nominees failed to be voted in this year, including Jeff Buckley, Mariah Carey, the Black Crowes, Melissa Etheridge, Lauryn Hill, INXS, Pink and Shakira.
Another ultimately unsuccessful nominee, the 1990s R&B group New Edition, won the hall’s fan ballot with more than 1 million supporters. But that result counts as only a single vote in the hall’s larger balloting.
Wall Street executives said they were stress‑testing or monitoring private credit portfolios as the as set class comes under scrutiny, but said they were comfortable with their exposure.
The comments came after three of the six biggest U.S. lend ers disclosed about $108 billion financing exposure to private credit or related loans during their quarterly earnings. Private credit has been in the spotlight after AI risks, fund outflows and fears of credit stress hammer alternative asset managers’ stocks.
The $3.5 trillion asset class has drawn in pension funds, insurers and wealthy individuals with the promise of steady, higher yields, but its rapid expansion into less liquid, harderto value loans has also raised concerns about how it would hold up under stress.
The $1.8 trillion direct lending segment, which is part of private credit, competes directly against the broadly syndicat ed loans and traditional bank lending for financing of midsized and large private equity-backed deals.
“We’re passing our own test, and we’re comfortable with how we’re sitting there, so the constant monitoring the risk capital framework, will play a role,” Citigroup CFO Gonzalo Luchetti said on an earnings call. He said the bank was con stantly stress-testing its portfolios, including in the private cred it space, for a range of macroeconomic environments.
A slew of negative headlines has hurt the private credit sec tor this year, with concerns mounting that software portfolios are vulnerable to AI disruption and that loans to small, middlemarket companies could come under pressure.
The default rate among U.S. corporate borrowers of private credit rose to a record 9.2% in 2025, according to a report last month by credit rating agency Fitch Ratings.
Other signs of stress have also emerged. Private credit funds, known as business development companies (BDCs), are get ting hit with higher rates on their bank borrowings even as the historically high double-digit returns they make on private lend ing shrink.
JPMorgan’s Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Barnum on a call with reporters said that the bank was “watching the space very closely,” adding that JPMorgan was well protected thanks to portfo lio diversification, underwriting and client selection.
“But obviously, if you see a big credit cycle with significant increase in default rates, you’re going to see some losses across the whole system,” Barnum said.

Israeli and Lebanese officials concluded more than two hours of direct talks Tuesday in Washington as Israel’s military campaign against Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon continued to threaten the U.S.-Iranian ceasefire.
The Israeli ambassador, Yechiel Leiter, emerged from the meeting and said both countries are “united in liberating Lebanon” from Iranian influence. The Lebanese ambassador who took part in the talks, Nada Hamadeh Moawad, along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, did not immediately comment.
Leiter said that the meeting represented “the beginning” of a new effort to defeat Hezbollah. He said the parties would release a joint statement.
Their face-to-face meeting was notable because Israel and Lebanon do not have diplomatic relations. The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, which continued in full force Tuesday, is one of three major points of contention as diplomats try to resolve the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran. The others are the status of Iran’s nuclear program and control of the Strait of Hormuz, a major choke point in the international energy trade.
“This is a process, not an event,” Rubio said at the start of the talks. “All of the complexities of this matter are not going to be resolved in the next six hours.”
Even as he downplayed expectations, Rubio added that the talks represented an effort to bring “a permanent end to 20 or 30 years of Hezbollah influence in this part of the world.” The Lebanese government has no direct control over Hezbollah. Hezbollah is not a part of the talks, and it has long opposed direct talks with Israel.
Israel’s airstrikes across southern Lebanon on Tuesday included one near the main hospital in the town of Tibnin that caused “significant damage” and injured several people, according to Lebanon’s state-run news agency. The medical center is one of a dwindling number in the country’s south as Israel intensifies its bombing campaign and ground invasion.
In the Strait of Hormuz, the status of a U.S. Navy blockade remained uncertain Tuesday. President Donald Trump announced the move to cut off Iran’s oil income, after high-level U.S.-Iranian negotiations broke down in Pakistan over the weekend. Trump told the New York Post that new talks could take place over the next two days in Pakistan.
Tracking data showed that several ships had passed through the strait — a vital conduit for global oil and gas shipments — before and after a deadline set by the United States. Some of those ships had departed from Iranian ports, were carrying Iranian products or were under U.S. government sanctions, according to trade analysis firm Kpler.

It was not immediately known whether the ships that had departed from Iranian ports fell within a grace period around the
deadline, had permission to pass or had bypassed the blockade. The U.S. military has offered few details on what it would do if merchant vessels tried to run through the blockade, which it has said applied to ships traveling to or from Iranian ports. No interdictions have occurred so far.
Here’s what else we’re covering:
— Economy: The International Monetary Fund warned Tuesday that disruptions from the war to oil markets could slow growth, fuel inflation and make a global recession more likely. Even if the conflict is short-lived, the damage to the global economy has been done, the IMF said.
— Energy: The International Energy Agency said Tuesday it expected demand for oil in the current quarter to shrink by 1.5 million barrels a day. Resuming the flow of supplies through the Strait of Hormuz is “the single most important variable in easing the pressure on energy supplies, prices and the global economy,” the agency said.
— Death tolls: The Human Rights Activists News Agency said at least 1,701 civilians, including 254 children, had been killed in Iran as of Wednesday. Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Monday that 2,089 people had been killed in the latest fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. In attacks attributed to Iran, at least 32 people have been killed in Persian Gulf nations. At least 22 people had been killed in Israel as of Sunday, as well as 12 Israeli soldiers fighting in Lebanon. The American death toll stands at 13 service members.

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, said Tuesday that the world cannot risk reverting “to the law of the jungle,” a thinly veiled criticism of the United States, in his most direct public comments on the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran.
“Maintaining the authority of international rule of law means not using it when it suits us and abandoning it when it doesn’t,” he said in a meeting with the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, in Beijing.
Xi’s remarks, in addition to meetings and calls held by senior Chinese officials in recent days, suggest that Beijing is playing a more active role in trying to build on the two-week ceasefire that the United States and Israel struck with Iran last week. China is also heavily reliant on the Strait of Hormuz for oil, where Iran has restricted shipping for weeks and where the United States has begun enforcing a blockade aimed at choking off Iranian oil income.
China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, on Monday called on his counterpart in Pakistan
to help “preserve the hard-won momentum” of talks it hosted over the weekend between the United States and Iran that failed to produce a peace agreement. During a meeting with the United Arab Emirates’ special envoy for China affairs, Wang also said Beijing was pushing for a return to peace in the region.
While China has condemned the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, it has also tried to maintain a neutral stance as it balances its partnership with Iran and manages tensions with the United States. President Donald Trump is set to visit Beijing in May, where he is expected
to discuss extending a truce in the U.S.-China trade war.
Ding Long, a professor at the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University, said that as the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has deepened, China has adopted a more active posture diplomatically. As much as 40% of China’s oil imports are shipped through the waterway.
“Fundamentally it’s about the cessation of hostilities as soon as possible. This is the key,” he said. “It’s about giving peace talks a chance, and China is willing to play a greater role.”

Some Hungarians had feared that Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party would try to block the results of Hungary’s national elections Sunday if returns did not favor him.
But when news came that Orban had lost — decisively — he delivered a swift concession speech. And Hungarians erupted in celebration.
“A huge sense of relief and joy has taken over public life,” Romeo Toth, a butcher and cook, wrote in a social media message.
“Now,” he added, “we finally have democracy.”
Toth joined a crowd Sunday night on the banks of the Danube River, across from the stately parliament building. Many people held burning torches, shimmering orange on the dark water.
“I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many happy people,” Toth, who was out celebrating until 4 a.m., said in an interview. “Not even on New Year’s Eve.”
The election was seen as a referendum on Orban’s 16-year tenure as the leader of this country on the eastern edge of the European Union and on the global nationalist revival that he and President Donald Trump both promoted.
Hungary saw its highest voter turnout since the collapse of communism in 1989. Many people were stunned by the defeat of Orban, a MAGA favorite in Europe who had moved Hungary closer to Moscow and further from Brussels.
Despite deep voter anger over the economy and Hungary’s turn away from the European Union, some Hungarians had wondered if such a defeat was possible or could stick.
“I never thought that this would happen
in my lifetime,” said Eszter Bodrogi, 52, who lives in Budapest and runs an information technology company.
Bodrogi said she had danced by the Danube, eight months pregnant with her first child, when Hungary joined the European Union in 2004. “I thought: ‘My child is going to be born in the European Union, what an opportunity this is,’” she remembered.
But for years, Orban’s party has cozied up to the Kremlin. Hungary has opposed critical EU policy goals. That infuriated her, she said.
“I really feel like we belong to Europe,” she said. “This was taken away from us, bit by bit.”
Bodrogi had worried that Orban’s party would not go quietly. “I suspected that they wouldn’t hand over power so easily,” she said.
Daniel Labrosse, 28, a Budapest-based artist, said, “It’s such a big change, and a change that I’ve been waiting for for so long.”
Labrosse said he had struggled financially under the Orban administration, which increased taxes for freelancers.
Orban’s party, Fidesz, had repeatedly tweaked elections to its advantage, reducing the number of seats in parliament and gerrymandering districts. That meant that the vote would be free but not entirely fair.
Nora Schultz, an analyst who writes a popular newsletter on Hungarian politics, said some had worried that Fidesz might claim large-scale election fraud or find other ways to block the results.
She said people were “ecstatic, and relieved,” that Orban had stepped aside, paving the way for Peter Magyar, a conservative opposition leader.

“Now, we have a chance for a peaceful and ordered transition of power,” Schultz said.
With more than 98% of votes counted, Fidesz was expected to win 55 of the 199 parliamentary seats. Magyar’s party, Tisza, is projected to get 138.
Some Fidesz voters said in interviews that the result had shocked them, and that they were terrified that the fall of Orban, a nationalist, could spell danger for Hungary and Hungarian identity.
“It feels as if the ground has been pulled out from under my feet,” Tunde Gabos, 34, a jewelry maker and folk singer, wrote in a direct message.
But Toth said Orban’s closeness to the Kremlin had hit hard for him because he
grew up near the Ukrainian border.
“Hopefully, they will also manage to understand that we belong to Europe and not to Russia,” Toth wrote in a message, speaking of Orban’s supporters.
He, like many Hungarians, said in the interview that he was also frustrated with the economy. Toth said that he saw foreign companies employing foreign workers, instead of Hungarians, and that he had made more money working 40 hours a week at a McDonald’s in Germany than he did in 70 hours a week as a cook in Hungary.
But he and his wife had moved back to be near their families.
Some Hungarians have had to move away from their families to find work.

Kati Simon, 26, a physiotherapist, recently moved to Budapest. She traveled about two hours back to her hometown, Dombovar, to vote. She said she had to move to the capital because there were no jobs in the countryside.
If the economy turns around, she would consider moving home. She was happy about the election result. “We have achieved a new vision for the future,” she said.

Afederal judge earlier this week dismissed President Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the publisher of The Wall Street Journal over its report of his lewd birthday greeting to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Judge Darrin Gayles in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida said in his decision that Trump had not “plausibly alleged” that the Journal published the article with “actual malice,” a legal standard meaning that it knew what it was publishing was false or had acted with reckless disregard as to its accuracy.
Gayles dismissed the complaint without prejudice, allowing Trump to bring the same claim again.
A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team said in a statement Monday that the president would refile “this powerhouse lawsuit.” Trump made a similar comment on social media.
A spokesperson for Dow Jones, the publisher of the Journal, said in a statement: “We are pleased with the judge’s decision to dismiss this complaint. We stand behind the reliability, rigor and accuracy of The Wall Street Journal’s reporting.”
Trump’s lawsuit centered on a Journal article published July 17 with the headline: “Jeffrey Epstein’s Friends Sent Him Bawdy Letters for a 50th Birthday Album. One Was From Donald Trump.” It described a letter that appeared to be from Trump in a 2003 birthday album compiled for Epstein. The article said the letter had a drawing of a naked woman on it with Trump’s signature below her waist and a message that read: “Happy Birthday — and may every day be another wonderful secret.”
Trump told the Journal that “this is a fake thing” and said he “never wrote a picture in my life. I don’t draw pictures of women.” He said in a lawsuit filed the day after the article was

published that “no authentic letter or drawing exists.”
Trump sued the Journal’s parent company, News Corp, as well as Rupert Murdoch, News Corp’s founder; Robert Thomson, the CEO; Dow Jones, the Journal’s publisher; and two Journal reporters. He asked for $10 billion in damages.
The president has been particularly sensitive to his association with Epstein. At the time the Journal article was published, he was under increasing pressure to release files related to the Justice Department’s investigation into Epstein.
A copy of the birthday book including the letter first
reported by the Journal was released in September to House Oversight Committee members by lawyers for Epstein’s estate. The 238-page book was compiled by his then-girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, who has been convicted of facilitating Epstein’s campaign of sexual abuse.
Lawyers for the Journal had asked the judge to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing that the article was true. They also argued that it could not be defamatory to Trump because the conduct described in the article was consistent with his reputation.
Gayles wrote in his decision that Trump failed to show that the Journal had not investigated the veracity of its claims before publishing the article. The judge noted that the Journal had reached out to Trump for comment before publication and had informed its readers that Trump had denied writing the letter.
The lawsuit’s dismissal marks another blow to Trump’s continued attacks on the press. The president has made no secret of his animus toward the news media and has filed lawsuits in recent months against The New York Times, the BBC, CNN and The Des Moines Register, seeking to punish the outlets over their reporting.
A $15 billion lawsuit against the Times and four of its reporters, as well as book publisher Penguin Random House, in which Trump alleged his reputation as a successful business owner was besmirched in a series of articles written in 2024, was dismissed in September. Trump refiled the lawsuit in October.
Trump’s history of vitriol against the press has started to hurt him in court, with judges citing those attacks in ruling against the administration in at least three recent cases involving news organizations. On March 31, a federal judge blocked Trump’s executive order barring the funding of NPR and PBS, ruling that it violated the First Amendment.

Each quarter, when publicly traded companies report their earnings, they tend to energetically emphasize what’s going well and to glaze over any stumbling blocks.
That will be considerably harder to do this quarter, if the results from Goldman Sachs on Monday are an indication.
Goldman kicked off Wall Street’s parade of first-quarter earnings reports with stern warnings about the impact of the war in Iran. The bank said that in comparison to a few months ago, it detected less enthusiasm from corporate clients for the types of big-money transactions — initial public offerings, mergers and the like — that are the backbone of investment banking.
That meant that although the bank earned a $5.6 billion profit in the first quarter, up roughly 20% from the same period a year earlier, its shares dropped 3%.
David M. Solomon, Goldman’s CEO, told analysts Monday “there’s no question” that the violence in the Middle East
was having an effect.
“Certainly,” he went on, “CEOs are looking carefully at how what’s going on — particularly commodity prices — is translating into the economy and into consumer demand.
“If the resolution of the conflict drags, that will probably be a headwind,” he said.
To a certain extent, geopolitical question marks are not necessarily bad for business. Goldman’s trading desks earned billions in additional fees from the heightened volatility in oil and other markets, while hedge funds and other professional investors paid the bank more to borrow money and make complicated, expensive bets on the direction of things to come.
Still, the results from currencies and commodities trading, among other areas, came in short of what had been expected.
Investors have remained relatively optimistic despite the daily whiplash of headlines from the Middle East. Most big public companies continue to post steady profits; year-over-year earnings growth for the companies in the S&P 500 is expected
to come in around 13% for the three months ended in March, which would be the sixth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth for the index.
Many more big companies are set to report earnings this week and get quizzed by investors on the effects of the war, including JPMorgan Chase, PepsiCo and Netflix.

By SAM AMICK, JOSH ROBBINS and JOE VARDON / THE ATHLETIC
For the first 25 Most Valuable Player Awards in NBA history, it was the league’s players, not the media, who determined the winner.
All that changed with the 1980-81 season, when a panel of 69 writers and broadcasters selected Julius Erving as the MVP, and a system was installed that has been in place ever since.
But it’s time, again, to give the players the microphone and honor all those well-informed views that were shaped on the hardwood over the past six months.
From late February through the start of April, writers from The Athletic fanned out across North America and asked the league’s players a wide array of questions, on individual awards, player movement and other league issues. Our writers surveyed 161 players, a record high for this annual project and a number that amounts to approximately one-third of the NBA’s workforce.
As always, we granted the players anonymity to give them the freedom to answer honestly, without fear of reprisals from opponents, teammates or fans.
The timing of this MVP discussion is intentional, as the regular season has wrapped up and the writers and broadcasters who regularly cover the league are now casting their official award ballots. Consider this an eleventh-hour assist from the players who once led this process.
When San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama sparked a robust MVP debate in late March, advocating for himself in a direct and detailed way, it was fair to wonder if that might be enough to bump Oklahoma City’s Shai GilgeousAlexander from his front-runner spot.
But if the players’ votes are any indication, then Gilgeous-Alexander, the silky smooth Thunder star, is on his way to a second straight Michael Jordan Trophy. He did not just top our player polling; he nearly doubled the support of the second-place finisher, Denver’s Nikola Jokic.
Among the 159 players who responded, GilgeousAlexander received 39% of the votes for MVP. Jokic was next with 21.4%, and the trio of Jaylen Brown, Cade Cunningham and Luka Doncic tied with 8.2%. Wembanyama received just 5% of the votes.
But that, as much as anything, is a testament to the strength of the field rather than an indictment of the Spurs phenom’s candidacy. This group is just that great. And Gil-

geous-Alexander, in the eyes of most, is the best of them all. Again.
The 27-year-old Gilgeous-Alexander is second in the league in scoring (31.1 points per game), with a field-goal percentage (55.3%) that dwarfs that of the league’s leading scorer, Doncic, who averaged 33.5 points per game on 47.6% shooting. And for all the focus on his ability to get to the line, that is merely one of the many ways that GilgeousAlexander neutralizes defenses.
He is a killer from the midrange, from long range and with those constant attacks at the rim that tend to free up the entire floor. And his footwork is on the level of Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
“Shai has been super consistent,” one supporter said. “They’ve had injuries, and he’s stayed consistent. We take it for granted, he scores at least 20 every night. He’s had a lot of his guys injured, and they’re still No. 1 in the West.”
His streak of consecutive games with 20-plus points now stands at 140. (He passed Wilt Chamberlain for the record on March 12.) Gilgeous-Alexander also averaged 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.4 steals this season for the Thunder, who boast the league’s seventh-ranked offense, the top defense and the best record (64-18).

There were many impressive moments along the way. But his back-and-forth battle with Jokic on March 9, when the two were at their best, might have been the most memorable. On the same night that Gilgeous-Alexander matched Chamberlain’s mark of 20-plus point games, he had 35 points, 15 assists, nine rebounds and no turnovers while burying two 3s in the final 14 seconds to seal a 129-126 win.
“He’s the best player on the best team,” another player said. “What more do you have to say?”
SGA, Jokic or Doncic?
As the first player noted, it is Gilgeous-Alexander’s incredible consistency — in addition to the efficiency — that has made him the most unstoppable perimeter player in the game today. If he does win a second consecutive MVP, he would become the first to do so since Jokic in 2021 and 2022, and the 14th player in NBA history to win the award consecutively.
Gilgeous-Alexander played more than half of this season without his primary wingman, Jalen Williams, a former All-Star. Williams, who was so integral in their title run last season, missed 49 games because of wrist and hamstring injuries.
Yet considering the company Gilgeous-Alexander is keeping in this loaded MVP race, the fact that he is so widely seen as the deserving winner by his fellow players is no small statement. In the Mile High City, where the injury-riddled Nuggets (54-28) have dealt with the extended absences of Aaron Gordon, Peyton Watson and others, the 31-year-old Jokic averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists — marks that have been reached only twice before in league history (by Oscar Robertson in 1961-62, and by Jokic last season).
“I’ve always had a hard time not picking Jokic,” one player said. “He’s probably the best player on the planet. He’s phenomenal.”
In Boston, Brown (28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 1.0 steals per game) proved that he is worthy of “1A” status. After Jrue Holiday was traded to Portland last summer, Kristaps Porzingis was sent to Atlanta and Jayson Tatum missed most of this season while recovering from his Achilles’ tendon tear, Brown somehow kept the Celtics among the ranks of contenders, and they are the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference.
“In terms of what the team lost last year, to come in with the expectations there were and to see the standings now, it’s because of him and the level of play he’s been at,” one player said. “He does it on both ends at a super high level. He’s consistent every night.”
In Detroit, where Cunningham’s collapsed lung injury took him out of official awards contention because of the league’s 65-game rule, the young Pistons star (23.9 points, 9.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks) showed out in a way that officially elevated him among the elites.
In Los Angeles, the Lakers’ season was recently derailed by injuries to Doncic (hamstring) and Austin Reaves (oblique), after LeBron James missed time to start the year. But the team surged in the second half largely because of the brilliance of Doncic. He averaged 33.5 points, 8.3 assists and 7.7 rebounds — marks that have only been reached once before in league history, when he did it in Dallas in the 2023-24 season. Per Stathead.com, only four players (Doncic, Robertson, Jordan and Russell Westbrook) have ever reached the 30-point, eight-assist and seven-rebound marks.
But none of those other players were quite as impressive as Gilgeous-Alexander, who — after winning last season’s MVP and the championship, and setting the pace for the entirety of this regular season — is growing quite accustomed to being out in front.
