House to honor Derby-winner Ortiz, other island jockeys who competed

By THE STAR STAFF
The island House of Representatives on Monday announced it will pay tribute to Puerto Rican jockey José Luis Ortiz, who, riding the three-year-old Golden Tempo, won the 152nd edition of the Kentucky Derby this past Saturday.
The achievements of the other six jockeys from the island who participated in the race that forms the first leg of the Triple Crown -- Irad Ortiz, Manuel Franco, Edwin Maldonado, Jaime Torres, Christian Torres and John Velázquez -- will also be recognized.
The announcement was made by the House Speaker Carlos “Johnny” Méndez Nuñez, along with Rep. Pedro Julio “Pelle” Santiago and Recreation and Sports Committee Chairman Rep. Luis “Josean” Jiménez Torres.
“In the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, we celebrate the participation of seven Puerto Rican jockeys in one of the most important events in the world of horse racing, the 152nd edition of the Kentucky Derby,” the House speaker said. “This feat alone would be enough to warrant recognition, but we must also add that another Puerto Rican, José Luis Ortiz, took the coveted first place in the so-called ‘Race of Races.’ The passion, perseverance, dedication, and excellence of the seven Puerto Rican jockeys is a legacy that is reflected not only on the world stage of horse racing but also in the hearts of the public who celebrate them.”

Jaime Torres, who until 2020 was a track and field athlete and has only four years of jockey experience, guided the horse Incredibolt to an unexpected sixth-place finish. U.S. Racing Hall of Famer Velázquez, riding Further Ado, earned an 11th-place finish in one of the most competitive Derbys in recent decades.
Christian Torres, who began his career six years ago and was participating in his first Kentucky Derby, rode Robusta to a 14th-place finish, followed by Franco, a Carolina resident who placed 15th aboard Albus, and Maldonado, participating in his first Derby and riding Pavlovian, finished in 18th place. Details of the recognition event will be announced in the coming days.
Amgen investing $300 million to expand facility in Juncos
By THE STAR STAFF
Amgen is investing an additional $300 million to expand its biologics manufacturing facility in Juncos, deepening a decades-long presence on the island and reinforcing its role in the company’s global supply chain.
According to MarketWatch, the new investment will support production scale-up, the integration of advanced manufacturing technologies, and efforts to ensure an uninterrupted supply of medicines. The expansion is also expected to create new jobs, including construction roles, highly skilled manufacturing positions, and opportunities tied to local workforce development initiatives.
The latest commitment builds on Amgen’s $650 million investment announced last year, which was projected to generate roughly 750 jobs. With Monday’s announcement, the company’s recent capital commitments in Puerto Rico approach $1 billion. Medicines produced at the Juncos site are distributed to patients in more than 60 countries, and the campus ranks among the largest biologics manufacturing facilities in the world.
Amgen’s footprint in Puerto Rico dates back more than three
decades. The company established its Juncos manufacturing operation in the early 1990s as it transitioned from small-scale clinical production to large-scale commercial manufacturing of biologic therapies. What began as a single building with a small workforce has since grown into a multi-building manufacturing complex employing thousands, supporting the production of more than two dozen medicines across multiple therapeutic areas.
The expansion in Puerto Rico comes as part of a broader push by global drugmakers to increase domestic manufacturing capacity amid rising trade pressures. Under an executive order issued by President Donald Trump in April, branded pharmaceuticals imported into the U.S. could face tariffs of up to 100% unless manufacturers either enter into government drug-pricing agreements or shift production to U.S.-based facilities.
Beyond Puerto Rico, Amgen has announced significant U.S. investments in recent months, including a $600 million science and innovation center in California, more than $1.5 billion in North Carolina, and $900 million in manufacturing expansion in Ohio, underscoring a company-wide strategy to strengthen its domestic manufacturing network.
Medical Science Campus clinics streamline appointments due to strike
By THE STAR STAFF
The University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus (RCM-UPR) announced on Monday that the clinics of the Intramural Medical Practice Plan would only see patients with scheduled appointments while students at the UPR Río Piedras campus marched as part of a systemwide strike to demand the resignation of UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde.
The Intramural Medical Practice Plan clinics are located in the Reparto Metropolitano shopping center.
Appointments at the School of Dental Medicine Clinic and the Psychiatry Clinic, located in the Guillermo Arbona building on campus, were previously rescheduled.
The RCM-UPR urged everyone to stay tuned to its official social media channels for updated information.
Meanwhile, island Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero issued warnings -- which were rejected -- about the impact the work stop-

page would have on patients with complex conditions.
The decision comes after Ramos Otero asked the unions and organizations calling for the strike last Friday to exclude the Intramural Clinic from the work stoppage, noting that it is an access point to specialized services for some 800 patients who already have scheduled appointments, many of whom have waited between eight and 10 months to be seen.
The official warned that the interruption of those services could cause additional delays of equal or greater duration, as well as complications in delicate clinical cases, including biopsies, adjustments to anticoagulant treatments, and pre-surgical evaluations.
The strike at the RCM was part of a day of protests by various sectors, as the Health Department has insisted on the need to keep essential services operational to avoid interruptions in specialized medical care.
Also on Monday, Jordán Conde held a meeting with Gov. Jenniffer González Colón as part of coordinated efforts to address the
current situation of the university system and continue advancing solutions aimed at strengthening its academic, fiscal, and operational stability.
In that context, the president presented the main elements of the explanatory memorandum submitted to the Legislative Assembly as part of the budget request for fiscal year 20262027, in a strategic management aimed at ensuring the continuity of academic operations and the institutional development of UPR.
As part of the budget proposal, an additional allocation of $118 million is contemplated for the Classification and Remuneration Plan for teaching, non-teaching and management staff, a measure aimed at addressing salary equity, strengthening talent retention and ensuring the operational stability of the institution.
“This effort responds to an urgent need for the university,” the UPR president said. “We have initiated a process that had been under evaluation for years, and today we present it as a clear priority to ensure the continuity and quality of our academic services.”
Gov’t misses budget deadline imposed by fiscal board, seeks extension
By THE STAR STAFF
The communications office of the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico reported Monday that the island government failed to submit its required budget report on May 1 and instead requested an extension.
Rep. Eddie Charbonier Chinea, chairman of the House Treasury Committee, responded in a radio interview, stating that the oversight oard must issue a public letter explaining why the executive branch failed to meet the established deadline. He said the executive branch, which is responsible for enforcing and complying with the law, should clarify
why the budget submission was delayed after previously stating that everything was in order.
Charbonier also questioned whether the executive branch complied with Section 204 of the law related to economic and tax relief measures, noting that residents are still waiting for progress. He emphasized that while the Legislature met its responsibilities, further action from the executive branch is necessary.
Separately, the oversight board warned last month that the government’s proposed fiscal year 2027 budget, although aligned with the certified fiscal plan in overall dollar amounts, remains noncompliant. The board said the budget was prepared using accounting standards that differ from the modified accrual
basis agreed upon for the General Fund.
In an April 24 letter to Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, the oversight board’s executive director, Robert F. Mujica Jr., outlined weeks of discussions with the administration regarding funding priorities, agency risks and supporting documentation.
Under the Puerto Rico Oversight, Management and Economic Stability Act, commonly known as PROMESA, the island government is required to submit a proposed commonwealth budget for board review and certification. According to the letter, the government initially submitted its fiscal year 2027 budget proposal on March 6 and provided revisions, including an updated version on April 21.
District 17 legislator concludes educational initiative with incentives
By THE STAR STAFF
District 17 (Aguadilla and Moca)
Rep. Wilson Román López on Monday celebrated the culmination of his “Tutors of Excellence” initiative.
With the distribution of $20,000 in
incentives, the legislator recognized and rewarded the outstanding performance of dozens of students and tutors at a wellattended event.
“With great satisfaction, we concluded the distribution of incentives and the presentation of workshops to the graduating
classes of various public and private high schools, positively impacting our students in District 17,” the lawmaker said. “We continue working to support, recognize, and open opportunities for those who are the present and future of Puerto Rico. … Congratulations to all the graduates!”
Although the revised proposal met General Fund targets, the oversight board said it did not allocate sufficient resources to cover certain operating risks. It also warned that some proposed reductions could threaten the continuity of essential services, including public safety, education, health and social programs.
Despite further negotiations and accepted reductions, the oversight board maintained that the budget remains noncompliant because it was not developed using modified accrual accounting standards.
The board has set June 30 as the target date to certify the fiscal year 2027 commonwealth budget.

By THE STAR STAFF
The Puerto Rico Department of Labor and Human Resources (DTRH by its initials in Spanish) activated an emergency re sponse on Monday to assist employees affected by the sudden shutdown of Spirit Airlines’ operations on the island.
Labor Secretary María del Pilar Vélez Casanova said the agency is mobilizing its resources to guide laid‑off workers through available benefits and employment services, in line with an initiative supported by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón.
The DTRH made its digital platform available to those affected to file applica tions for unemployment insurance. Workers can access trabajo.pr.gov and complete the process in the “Initial Unemployment Claim” section. Subsequently, they must submit the required documentation through the portal in the “Document Submission” section.
“The situation faced by these workers and their families is complex, and from the department, we are focused on providing them with immediate support and clear guidance so that they can access the available aid,” Vélez Casanova said.
In addition to the unemployment process, the agency mobilized staff across its offices on the island to provide direct guidance on employment programs and market opportunities. Those efforts include advisory services for job search, registration on the Employment and Recruitment Portal to Facilitate Labor Integration, or PERFIL by its acronym in Spanish, and other recruitment initiatives to facilitate their transition to new job opportunities.
Spirit Airlines, the ultra‑low‑cost
carrier known for its bright yellow aircraft and discount fares, ceased all operations immediately on Saturday, after announcing an “orderly wind‑down” of the company. The decision followed years of financial instability, including two bankruptcy filings since 2024, mounting debt, and unsuccessful efforts to secure new financing or a federal rescue.
According to the airline, the shutdown was precipitated by a sharp increase in jet fuel prices, which it attributed to geopolitical instability related to the war involving Iran, combined with already weakened finances.
Federal officials, however, noted that Spirit had been in severe financial distress well before the fuel price surge, citing more than $2.5 billion in losses since 2020 and a business model that struggled to compete in a crowded low‑cost market.
Spirit’s collapse came after several failed recovery attempts, including a blocked merger with JetBlue in 2024 and negotiations in recent days for a $500 million federal bailout, which ultimately fell apart when creditors and the government could not reach an agreement. With no new funding available, the compa ny canceled all remaining flights and began liquidating assets to repay creditors.
The airline had operated in Puerto Rico since 2001, serving San Juan and other des tinations as part of a broader network across the Caribbean and Latin America. Its shutdown left thousands of passengers stranded and some 17,000 direct and indirect employees unemployed worldwide, including an unde termined number of workers on the island.
Puerto Rico officials have stated that while the impact on tourism is expected to be limited, the employment consequences of the airline’s closure are still being assessed.
Agriculture Dept. launches Puerto Rican Land Week
By THE STAR STAFF
The Department of Agriculture on Sunday announced the start of the 71st Puerto Rican Land Week, which is being observed all of this week under the theme: “Where the land flourishes, livestock thrives, and water offers us fish; harvest, raise livestock, and fish.”
The celebration brings together a diverse agenda of educational, cul tural and recognition activities aimed at highlighting the importance of the agricultural sector, the conservation of natural resources, and the value of the island’s farmers, ranchers and fishermen, reaf firming the agency’s commitment to sustainable development and local production.

In a first for the commemoration, La For taleza (the Governor’s Mansion), the Capitol Building and the Department of Agriculture’s central building in San Juan will be illuminated in green throughout the week as a symbolic tribute to Puerto Rican land and all the farmers who sustain food production every day. The gesture represents institutional support for the growth of agriculture and those who are an essential part of the industry.
This year’s official poster was designed by Briana Armijo Serralta, a student at the Central School of Visual Arts, who was selected after a competition involving 25 students.
Agriculture Secretary Irving Rodríguez Torres emphasized that the celebration rep resents an opportunity to strengthen the bond between the community and the agricultural sector, while also recognizing the efforts of those who work the land.
“Earth Week is an opportunity to recon nect with who we are: a productive, resilient land brimming with agricultural talent,” he said. “This year, we are taking that message to every corner, promoting the consumption of locally produced goods and recognizing the work of our farmers, ranchers, and fishermen.”
As part of the initiatives, the agency will be promoting public participation in spaces like “La Placita en Plaza” at Plaza Las Américas, where citizens are invited to support local products.
This year, the Agriculture Department headquarters takes on greater significance as it opens its doors to what has always been the farmer’s home to celebrate Agricultural Night,

Behind voting rights case, a clash over the reality of racism
By RICHARD FAUSSET
In 1965, the year Congress passed the Voting Rights Act, it did not take much detective work to discover how some of the South’s most powerful white politicians felt about their Black neighbors.
Sen. James Eastland, D-Miss., who wanted to kill the landmark legislation, once openly stated that Black people were an “an inferior race.” During his 1963 inauguration speech, Gov. George Wallace of Alabama, a Democrat, infamously declared, “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
These days, such racism, at least when directed at Black people, is rarely openly expressed by white Southern politicians, who consider it to be immoral, bad politics, bad manners — or all of the above.
But a question central to the Southern experience lingers: Has anti-Black racism eased, or has discrimination against African Americans simply become more subtle, disguised as a web of rules embedded in regular partisan politics?

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court strode once again into this fraught territory with a decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act, the law that allowed many Black Southerners to finally participate in American democracy after decades of systemic oppression and exclusion.
At issue was the way in which the courts should determine whether a legislative map is racially discriminatory. Writing for the six-judge conservative majority, Justice Samuel Alito stated that from now on, anyone who wished to challenge a map on such grounds must show proof that the mapmakers had “intentionally” drawn legislative districts to disadvantage a given racial group.
In a blistering dissent, Justice Elena Kagan, writing for the liberal minority, argued that under the ruling, a plaintiff would have to show “that the legislators were ‘motivated by a discriminatory purpose,’” which was contrary to the “clear text and design” of the Voting Rights Act.
Congress has long known, she wrote, that trying to find smoking-gun evidence of racist motives is “well-nigh impossible.”
Indeed, such proof may be harder than ever to find. For Gerald Griggs, a civil rights lawyer in Georgia, the old measures of racism — some stomach-turning tally of crosses burned, of people lynched — does not apply so much anymore. Griggs, who is Black, said that subtler discriminatory forces have “gotten into the system and corroded the arteries of the system,” and will require particularly nuanced legal challenges to “ferret out.”
“What we’re dealing with now is less overt racism,” said Griggs, a past president of the Georgia NAACP.
Some Black Southerners still feel that kind of racism deeply. But proving it in a courtroom is another matter.
The Supreme Court’s requirement that there must be some proof of an intent to discriminate has taken form in other areas of the law — with serious implications in the South and beyond, said Stephen Bright, who teaches law at Georgetown and Yale universities.
The problem of “proving” racial discrimination has also bedeviled the South when it comes to racially lopsided juries,
Bright said. In a 1986 case, Batson v. Kentucky, the Supreme Court established that a judge must find “purposeful discrimination” to determine that racial discrimination had been present in the jury selection process.
“You have to prove that the prosecutor, in using peremptory strikes, intentionally discriminated,” Bright said. “You can’t possibly know that unless the prosecutor tells you.”
This is one reason, he said, that all-white juries remain common in many parts of the South — “even in places with very substantial African American populations.”
The Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday nullified a majority-Black congressional district in Louisiana, one of two in the state. The district, long and intermittently bulbous, had been created by state lawmakers who felt pressured by the courts to draw a map that carved out two districts with a majority of Black voters, in order to meet the requirements of the Voting Rights Act.
Alito, writing the decision, made the case that the South had come a long way since 1965, particularly on Black voter participation, an assertion that is highly contested.
“Black voters now participate in elections at similar rates as the rest of the electorate, even turning out at higher rates than white voters in two of the five most recent presidential elections nationwide and in Louisiana,” he wrote.
Some conservative African Americans last week welcomed the ruling, viewing it a fitting response to real racial progress in the United States. To them, the Voting Rights Act, which often forced state legislatures to draw majority-minority districts around the country, had merely put Black Americans into archaic race-based boxes.
Among those approving of the ruling was Josh Williams, a Republican state representative of a majority-white district in Ohio.
“The idea that Black Americans need special districts carved out just for them is complete non-
sense,” Williams posted on social media last week, noting that he was currently running for Congress in a district that is also majority-white. “It’s a violation of the law and blatantly unconstitutional.”
Wednesday’s ruling is of a piece with the Supreme Court’s decisions to move to what some justices have called a “colorblind Constitution.” In 2023, the court effectively ended affirmative action in college admissions, with Chief Justice John Roberts writing, “eliminating racial discrimination means eliminating all of it.”
The second Trump administration, meanwhile, has used its executive power to try to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the public and private sectors.
The stakes in the voting-rights case, Louisiana v. Callais, are arguably bigger, potentially reconfiguring the very architecture of national political power just as a polarized country is barreling toward midterm elections. Some states are already considering whether to redraw their maps.
In today’s redistricting efforts, it has been a struggle, at times, to tease out whether a redrawn electoral map is a result of partisanship or old-fashioned racism. Complicating matters is the fact that the Supreme Court, in 2019, ruled that federal judges have no power to hear challenges to gerrymanders carried out purely for partisan advantage.
Stephen Menendian, an academic researcher at the University of California, Berkeley, has described the mess as “the problem of entanglement.” In a 2023 law review article, he warned of a big risk: “that unconstitutional racial gerrymanders will escape judicial review under the cover of partisanship.”
The court’s conservative majority sees it the opposite way. In the opinion, Alito wrote that plaintiffs could challenge a partisan gerrymander by claiming it is actually a racial gerrymander. Alito warned that litigants should not be able to get around the rules “by dressing their political-gerrymandering claims in racial garb.”
Quin Hillyer, a white conservative opinion writer who lives in Alabama, believes that these days, Republican mapmakers would welcome any Black voters into a district if it would bolster their party’s strength.
“If there were an enclave, or a neighborhood, that was 100% Black, but that voted 80% Republican,” he said, “I think that the white Republicans would gladly take those people.”

Rudy Giuliani remains in critical condition with pneumonia
By JONAH E. BROMWICH
Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City, was still in critical condition as he recovered from pneumonia in a Florida hospital on Monday, his spokesperson said.
The spokesperson, Ted Goodman, said that the lung infection had overwhelmed Giuliani and that he had required a ventilator to breathe. But as of Monday, Goodman said, Giuliani was breathing on his own “with his family and primary medical provider at his side.”
“Mayor Giuliani is the ultimate fighter — as he has demonstrated throughout his life — and he is winning this battle,” Goodman said in a statement, adding, “Please keep the prayers coming.”
On Sunday, Goodman had announced that Giuliani was in a Florida hospital in critical condition, but did not elaborate on the cause or the former mayor’s symptoms.
It is unclear when Giuliani, 81, was taken to the hospital.
President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social on Sunday, called Giuliani a “True Warrior, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR.” He used the occasion to again advance his false claim that Democrats “cheated” in the 2020 election.

vertebra. After that, Giuliani made at least one public appearance in a wheelchair.
On Monday, Goodman said that Giuliani had been diagnosed with restrictive airway disease stemming from his proximity to ground zero in Manhattan on Sept. 11, 2001, and that the condition made respiratory illnesses more threatening.
It is unclear whether Giuliani has publicly mentioned such a diagnosis before. But the former mayor has noted that he was a frequent presence at ground zero, and in recent years his lawyers have alluded to potential lung disease related to toxicity from the attacks.
Giuliani became mayor in January 1994 after he defeated Mayor David Dinkins, who was running for a second term. He remained in office until December 2001 and helped lead the city in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Later, he became a personal lawyer to Trump during the president’s first term and quickly became embroiled in a number of investigations related to the presidency.
“They cheated on the Elections, fabricated hundreds of stories, did anything possible to destroy our Nation, and now, look at Rudy. So sad!” he wrote.
Giuliani has struggled with legal and financial problems in recent years, and in the summer of 2025, he was involved in a car crash in New Hampshire in which he suffered a fractured
FEMA is reversing job cuts made under Kristi Noem
By SCOTT DANCE
The Federal Emergency Management Agency is reversing job cuts that former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem had overseen before she was fired last month.
FEMA has reinstated 14 people who had signed a public letter that became known as the Katrina Declaration, which warned that the agency risked repeating mistakes learned during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, said Abby McIlraith, one of the reinstated workers and an emergency management specialist. Another 21 people who signed their names are no longer at the agency, McIlraith said.
The agency has also begun calling disaster workers who were let go in January to offer them their jobs back, according to two people familiar with the actions, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the move publicly. The agency parted ways with some 200 workers who served in temporary roles when their assignments

came up for renewal in January. It was a major departure from past practices, and prompted unions to file a lawsuit against the agency, arguing that the dismissals violated FEMA’s statutory requirement to maintain readiness for disasters.
The agency is taking steps to “stabilize” its workforce before hurricane season, which begins in June, and the World Cup, with soccer matches to be held across the United States, Canada and Mexico in June and July, said Victoria Barton, a FEMA spokesperson.
“Under new leadership, FEMA is addressing outstanding personnel actions to ensure workforce stability and a strong, deployable surge force for upcoming national events and potential disasters,” Barton said in an email.
Giuliani was a crucial part of the team that helped Trump advance the claim that he won the 2020 election. After Trump left office, Giuliani was indicted several times and contended with a number of costly defamation suits related to those efforts. Now disbarred, he has kept a far lower profile during Trump’s second term in office.
among senior leaders about their decisions to cut staffing. Judge Susan Illston of U.S. District Court for the District of Northern California on Thursday ordered FEMA to immediately search the personal cellphone of Joseph Guy, a former top aide to Noem, before he leaves federal employment Thursday.

Illston, who was nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton, also recently ordered depositions of Guy and Kara Voorhies, a former FEMA contractor and aide to Noem whose actions are being scrutinized as part of an inspector general’s investigation into how the Homeland Security Department handled contracts under Noem and her senior adviser Corey Lewandowski.
Documents released as evidence in that court case show that Karen Evans, the acting FEMA administrator, was taking cues from Voorhies on agency operations and personnel decisions.
Markwayne Mullin, a former Republican senator from Oklahoma, took over as homeland security secretary in late March. FEMA is part of the Homeland Security Department.
FEMA had about 18,500 people in its incident management workforce as of Thursday, according to a daily briefing on its operations, which is nearly 2,000 fewer than it had at the end of last year.
At the same time, a federal judge is placing increasing pressure on FEMA to release documents and communications
FEMA officials did not respond to questions about how its decisions to reverse the dismissals could affect that litigation, in which the plaintiffs are seeking the reinstatement of those workers.
McIlraith said that getting her job back after being fired for signing the protest letter is a vindication. But she said that the agency “is arguably in a worse state than it was back in August when I signed the Katrina Declaration.”
“A hiring freeze is still in effect, FEMA still has no legally qualified administrator, money isn’t getting to states that need it, we have wildfire and hurricane seasons coming up, and as a result the public is in severe danger,” McIlraith said.
Trump is the one without the cards at the poker table NEW YORK TIMES EDITORIAL
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
President Donald Trump often falls back on poker metaphors. He told President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine that he had “no cards” when it came to standing up to Russia. Trump told Iran’s leaders that they had “no cards” when it came to standing up to him.
Would somebody please tell me when it’s poker night at the Trump White House. Because I’d really like a seat at that table.
Trump is betting that by blockading Iran to prevent it from exporting its oil he can force Tehran to negotiate on his terms. But some experts think Iran has enough income and can store enough oil to hold out for at least several months.
Meanwhile, Iran is betting that by choking off the Strait of Hormuz — and driving up gasoline and food prices for Americans and all their allies — it can force Trump to eventually act in accord with his TACO label: Trump always chickens out. This is painful to watch. Trump and Tehran are each saying: “I will hold my breath until you turn blue.” We’ll see who gasps first.
The real question is: How in the world has Iran’s regime lasted this long — two months — against the combined military might of Israel and America? The answer: Trump does not understand how much asymmetric warfare has reshaped geopolitics in just the last few years.
But I don’t want to be too hard on our president. He is not alone. Iran is to Trump what Ukraine is to Vladimir Putin, what

Hamas and Hezbollah have been to Benjamin Netanyahu and — wait for it — what the next generation of cyberhackers will be to China and America and every other nation-state.
Think about it: Last June, Ukraine smuggled 117 cheap drones into Russia hidden inside trucks and destroyed or damaged about 20 of Russia’s strategic aircraft, including multimilliondollar long-range, nuclear-capable strategic bombers.
This year, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard used $35,000 Shahed-136 drones to strike two Amazon Web Services data centers, costing tens of millions of dollars, in the United Arab Emirates (a third Amazon data center, in Bahrain, was damaged in a nearby strike), knocking them offline and disrupting banking and other services across the Persian Gulf region.
Previously, Hamas commanders said that they fashioned small rockets from piping from abandoned Israeli settlements, unexploded Israeli bombs and other munitions and even parts from a sunken British World War I warship off the Gaza Strip coast. Israel was forced to use Patriot missiles costing $4 million each to intercept them.
In other words, we’re already in a new era in which small powers and small groups can leverage information-age tools — guided by GPS and digitally controlled — to gain asymmetric advantages.
“We have always thought of power in terms of the ability to create mass destruction,” John Arquilla, a former professor of defense analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School and the author of the forthcoming “Troubled American Way of War,” said in an interview. In an interdependent world, “the many and the small now have the ability to create mass disruption in the physical or the virtual world” — from the Strait of Hormuz to cyberspace.

Artificial Intelligence will drastically increase the power of small states and groups in conflict with the great powers. (Evan Hume/The New York Times)
Claude, Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT — can now be directed by humans with a single command, and they will autonomously execute, and self-optimize, multistage cyberattacks on their own.
To put it differently, information-age tools vastly amplified trained operators within organizations, including terrorist organizations. Intelligence-age tools replace trained operators with vastly more intelligent, autonomous and skilled AI agents with more destructive reach at little cost.

Trump recklessly started this war without allies, without any scenario planning and, obviously, without any real understanding of Iran’s assets in asymmetric warfare. Nevertheless, it would be a disaster for the region and the world if Iran’s malign regime emerges from this war intact and unreformed, because an even more powerful asymmetric tool kit for bad guys is just arriving.
Here’s what’s truly new and disturbing: We are rapidly moving from the age of asymmetric warfare based on information-age tools that can wreak mass disruption to what my technology tutor, Craig Mundie, a former head of research and strategy at Microsoft, calls an age of asymmetric warfare based on “intelligence-age tools” that can cheaply wreak disruption at a much larger scale anywhere on demand.
This is a very important distinction. The age of information — that is, the period of computers, smartphones, the internet and GPS — gave us tools that amplify the power and reach of a trained operator. It vastly increased the power of any one coder, drone operator, ransomware thief, hacker, social media influencer or disinformation specialist. It made any small unit more powerful, but humans needed to have some basic knowledge to operate these digital tools. And human intent always directed them.
In the age of intelligence, artificial-intelligence agents that are built on large language models — like Anthropic’s
These intelligence-age “capabilities that can superempower individuals, that many thought were 18 months or two years away, are now here,” Mundie told me. “When the dual-use nature of these AI technologies becomes fully democratized — and that is where we are heading soon — they will present a material threat to all developed societies” by superempowered actors “who historically never had any cards to play before at all.”
In other words, everybody with an AI chatbot/agent is potentially going to have cards. What could that look like? Check out a recent New York Times story by Gabriel J.X. Dance. It begins:
“One evening last summer, Dr. David Relman went cold at his laptop as an AI chatbot told him how to plan a massacre. A microbiologist and biosecurity expert at Stanford University, Dr. Relman had been hired by an artificial intelligence company to pressure-test its product before it was released to the public. That night in the scientist’s home office, the chatbot explained how to modify an infamous pathogen in a lab so that it would resist known treatments. Worse, the bot described in vivid detail how to release the superbug, identifying a security lapse in a large public transit system.”
My translation: You’ve read a lot about how Iran has used cheap $35,000 drones to close the Strait of Hormuz. Wait until you see how it can leverage large language models and their AI agents at a very low cost.

In ‘Our Land,’ an eminent filmmaker turns her camera on a killing

“Our Land” makes liberal and thoughtful use of drones, gliding repeatedly over the area occupied by the Indigenous Chuschagasta people in Tucumán province, Argentina. (Strand Releasing)
By ALISSA WILKINSON
Drone footage is common (perhaps too common) in documentaries, and it can feel gimmicky, like the filmmakers got a little too fond of a toy. But for her first nonfiction feature, “Our Land (Nuestra Tierra)” (in theaters), celebrated Argentine director Lucrecia Martel makes liberal and thoughtful use of drones, gliding repeatedly over the area occupied by the Indigenous Chuschagasta people in Tucumán province, Argentina. The effect is twofold: We get a sense of the vastness and beauty of the territory. And we become aware of the technology itself — at one point, a bird slams into a drone, knocking it off course.
The intersection of recording technology, history and human lives is the crux of “Our Land,” which was many years in the making. It tells a harrowing story of crime and a hunt for justice. In 2009, three white Argentines — a landowner, Dario Amin, and two former police officers, Luis Humberto Gómez and Eduardo José Valdivieso — went to Chuschagasta territory, seeking access to the community’s quarry and saying they owned the land. An altercation ended with Amin shooting and killing Javier Chocobar, an activist and leader of the community, and injuring several other Indigenous people.

Amin filmed Chocobar’s killing and posted the unedited footage to YouTube. The video spread online, reaching people around the world. It caused outrage in Argentina, where Indigenous people have struggled to gain recognition of their ownership of ancestral lands and have experienced centuries of land theft and violence. The fury led Martel to make a film about Chocobar, but it took nine years for the case to come to trial.
Martel takes a collage approach, trusting the audience to piece together the story as she weaves together different types of footage. There’s some video shot inside the courtroom, where we hear the men on trial as well as character witnesses and others in the community talk about their ideas of what happened. There’s a low-fi reenactment of the killing, filmed in the spot where it happened. Indigenous community members and Chocobar’s family talk about his life and their history. And Amin’s choppy, almost indiscernible footage of the killing is here, too — you can barely tell what’s happening, just that something horrible did happen.
Occasionally Martel pulls back to slow, elegant drone footage of the landscape, which accrues new meaning as a site of violence and dispute as the film goes on: racism, prejudice, the desire for justice and recognition are all present in this place. Drawing attention to the filming technology, Martel implicitly reminds us that Chocobar’s case only came to trial because it was filmed and uploaded to the internet in the first place. Undeniable visual evidence raised awareness of one man’s death. But the stories that Chuschagasta men and women tell Martel in “Our Land” bear witness to other Indigenous people who, like Chocobar, suffered or died defending their ancestral land, but without cameras there to watch, and only the community left to tell their stories.

US equity fund inflows ease to a six-week low
U.S. equity fund inflows ebbed to a six-week low in the week through April 29 as investors concerned over a surge in crude oil prices exercised caution ahead of a monetary policy decision by the Federal Reserve.
According to LSEG Lipper data, investors bought just $911 million worth of U.S. equity funds in their smallest weekly net purchase since March 18.
The Federal Reserve kept interest rates steady last week, but three board members voted to drop the central bank’s easing bias, adding a layer of uncertainty around the Fed’s policy direction.
The S&P 500, meanwhile, hit a record high of 7,272.52 last Friday, bolstered by upbeat earnings from several major U.S. tech companies.
Investors pumped $1.43 billion into technology stocks, extending a run of net purchases into a fourth successive week. They also offloaded $1.06 billion from healthcare funds.
U.S. bond funds saw an uptick in demand as inflows surged to $4.87 billion, from approximately $3.41 billion in the prior week.
U.S. government bond funds, high yield bond funds and short-to-intermediate investment-grade funds attracted $2.73 billion, $1.97 billion and $1.48 billion, respectively.
Money market funds, meanwhile, faced a third successive weekly outflow to the tune of $13.02 billion.
Oil prices spiked by around 5% on Monday after Iran said it had turned back a U.S. warship trying to enter the Strait of Hormuz, though the U.S. denied Iranian reports it had been struck by missiles. That came after President Donald Trump said the U.S. would begin assisting ships stranded in the strait.
Meanwhile, the yen briefly jumped against the dollar again, with traders on the lookout for further buying from Japan’s Ministry of Finance after suspected intervention last week.
I’ll get into that and more below.
But first, listen to the latest episode of the Morning Bid daily podcast. Subscribe to hear Reuters journalists discuss the biggest news in markets and finance seven days a week.
Before the reports of a U.S. warship being turned back from the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, President Trump had on Sunday described a plan to free stranded vessels in the strait as a “humanitarian gesture”. He left the mechanics of the operation vague, but U.S. Central Command gave a sense of its scale, saying it would provide 15,000 military personnel and more than 100 land and sea-based aircraft.

Brent trading at around $112/bbl and WTI at around $106/bbl. Iran had previously warned that any foreign armed forces entering the strait would be attacked.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media have reported that Washington has sent a response, via Pakistan, to Tehran’s 14-point proposal to end the war - a plan that Trump said on Saturday he was likely to reject.
The lack of progress on a peace deal - with a key sticking point being the timing of nuclear talks - means the broader stalemate and disruption in the Gulf look set to continue for now.
Elsewhere, the yen strengthened abruptly again on Monday, touching 155.7 against the dollar before paring its gains. That’s fuelling speculation of another round of Japanese buying after last week’s apparent intervention, which may have seen the authorities spend up to $35 billion to prop up the flagging currency.

The United States on Monday urged China to push Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and said that its purchases of Iranian oil amounted to funding global terrorism, delivering a stern rebuke before President Donald Trump’s meeting in Beijing this month with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The warning came from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who will be participating in the high-stakes meetings. Bessent has been leading an aggressive campaign to cripple Iran’s economy with a blitz of new sanctions. He has also been working to devise ways to increase oil supplies around the world to blunt the impact of soaring energy prices. Gasoline hit an average of $4.45 per gallon Monday.
“Let’s see if China — let’s see them step up with some diplomacy and get the Iranians to open the strait,” Bessent said on Fox News on Monday. “Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism, and China has been buying 90% of their energy, so they are funding the largest state sponsor of terrorism.”
Tension between the United States and China has eased since a year ago, when the Trump administration triggered a trade war by hiking tariffs on Chinese imports and China retaliated with export controls on critical minerals. But the Iran war has opened a new front in their rivalry, as Chinese purchases of Iranian oil keep Iran’s economy afloat.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent testifies during a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the 2027 budget request for the Department of the Treasury on Capitol Hill in Washington, April 22, 2026. The United States on Monday, May 4, 2006, urged China to push Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz and said that its purchases of Iranian oil amounted to funding global terrorism, delivering a stern rebuke ahead of President Trump’s meeting in Beijing this month with the Chinese leader, Xi Jinping. (Kenny Holston/The New York Times)
In recent weeks, the Treasury Department has intensified economic pressure on China. It has specifically been targeting China’s independent “teapot” refineries with sanctions and warning financial institutions that they will face penalties for facilitating oil sales between Iran and China.
The Treasury Department on April 24 im-
posed sanctions on an independent Chinese refinery, Hengli Petrochemical Refinery, which is one of Iran’s largest customers for crude oil and other petroleum products. Hengli has purchased billions of dollars’ worth of Iranian crude from the Revolutionary Guard, which wields military, political and economic clout throughout Iran.
But China responded over the weekend, ordering its companies not to comply with the U.S. sanctions. China’s Ministry of Commerce invoked a 2021 “blocking measure” that protects its firms from foreign laws that the Chinese government believes violate international norms and unfairly restrict trade.
U.S. sanctions are far-reaching economic tools that can block transactions and freeze the international assets of companies around the world, essentially cutting them off from Western financial services providers. China’s order to disregard the sanctions will create a new point of tension between the world’s two largest economies and could set the stage for additional decoupling of their financial systems.
China has been making other provocative moves before the meeting between the two leaders.
Last Monday, the Chinese government said it would require the unwinding of Meta’s acquisition of Manus, a Singapore-based artificial intelligence company with Chinese founders, in a move that could chill other Chinese entrepreneurs from seeking alliances with foreign partners.
Bessent suggested that Iran would be high on the agenda when Trump meets with Xi.
“The threat of attacks from Iran has closed the strait — we are reopening it,” Bessent said. “So I would urge the Chinese to join us in supporting this international operation.”
US warns China over Iranian oil as sanctions fight intensifies Strikes in UAE, Oman and at sea strain Iran truce to the breaking point
By AARON BOXERMAN, ISMAEEL NAAR and SANAM MAHOOZI
Violence flared anew in and around the Persian Gulf on Monday, as the United Arab Emirates said Iran had fired missiles and drones at its territory and the U.S. military said it sunk several Iranian military boats, straining the fragile ceasefire in the Middle East.
UAE authorities blamed Iran for attacks on a major oil port and an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, injuring three people in the first such attacks in the UAE since the truce began four weeks ago. Oman also reported an attack that injured two people in the coastal town of Bukha, near UAE territory, without identifying the perpetrator.
Loud booms shook the UAE city of Dubai
as air defense missiles detonated high overhead. U.S. Central Command said it had shot down Iranian missiles and drones aimed at U.S. military and commercial ships and around the strait.
It was not clear if the attacks signaled the collapse of the strained truce and a resumption of active warfare. Iran did not officially confirm or deny that it had resumed attacks, and a senior military official denied on state media that its boats had been sunk.
Iran has frequently targeted energy infrastructure in Gulf countries that host U.S. military bases since Israel and the United States attacked in late February, beginning the war. But those attacks on Iran’s Gulf neighbors more or less came to a halt when a ceasefire went into effect on April 8.
At least three Indian citizens were injured
when an Iranian drone struck an oil industrial zone in Fujairah, a UAE port in the southern end of the Strait of Hormuz, local authorities said. Oman, without assigning blame, said a residential building near the strait had been struck, with two people injured.
No casualties were reported in the attack on a UAE oil tanker. South Korea’s government confirmed an explosion and fire in the same area on a ship belonging to a South Korean company, but did not say it had been attacked.
Negotiations between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, on a comprehensive deal to end the war have stalled, as both sides have drawn seemingly incompatible red lines. The Trump administration had sought to pressure Iran to end its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf with a new military operation to help commercial ships stuck
in the waterway to leave.
Central Command said Monday that several U.S. Navy vessels had steamed through the strait, and that they had accompanied a few commercial ships. Iranian officials threatened to retaliate against U.S. warships or other vessels that sought to run their blockade.
Iran’s grip on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and gas, has rattled markets and sent energy prices skyrocketing worldwide. In response, the United States has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports.
President Donald Trump had initially conditioned the ceasefire with Iran on the end of the Iranian blockade. But Iran has effectively prevented most traffic from traveling through the waterway, and Iran continues to assert that it has the right to control which ships can pass and also to assess tolls on them.
The US set off a corruption scandal that is gripping Mexico
By JACK NICAS
If there had been odds on which Mexican politician was colluding with the cartels, the favorite might have been Rubén Rocha Moya.
Rocha, the governor of Sinaloa, has long been dogged by accusations of protecting his state’s dominant criminal organization, the Sinaloa Cartel, a prolific supplier of fentanyl and ruthless purveyor of violence.
Those accusations reached a fever pitch in 2024 when the U.S. authorities arrested the cartel’s co-founder, who then said he thought he had been on his way to meet Rocha.
Yet, instead of investigating, Mexico’s leaders rushed to Rocha’s defense. The president at the time, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, quickly joined hands with Rocha on a stage in Sinaloa. “I came to pledge to continue fighting alongside you,” Sheinbaum said.
That promise just got a lot more complicated.
On Wednesday, U.S. prosecutors unsealed an indictment that put teeth behind the years of accusations against Rocha. It painted a picture of years of collusion among the Sinaloa Cartel, Rocha, and nine other current and former officials in Sinaloa, in which the cartel leaders delivered bribes and votes in exchange for impunity.
The charges detonated a political bomb in Mexico, dominating the national conversation and largely splitting the country into two camps: those thrilled to see consequences for what they viewed as endemic corruption in Mexico and those repulsed by what they viewed as illegal intervention by the United States.
Rocha, 76, denied the charges, calling them a U.S. ploy to undermine Morena, the leftist political party to which he and Sheinbaum belong. Then, on Friday night, he abruptly announced he would temporarily step down from his position to focus on his defense.
For Sheinbaum, the moment presented her with a crisis — or an opportunity. She could use the indictment as a turning point to crack down on corruption or, as Mexican leaders have often done in the past, close ranks in the face

A view of Culiacán at sunset in Mexico’s Sinaloa state, Oct. 31, 2025. The U.S. indictment of a Mexican governor has spotlighted cartel corruption, strained cross-border relations and handed President Claudia Sheinbaum a thorny choice. (Paul Ratje/The New York Times)
of accusations from their neighbor to the north.
“I do believe she wants justice,” said Enrique Acevedo, lead anchor of “En Punto,” Mexico’s biggest nightly newscast. “But every time she’s had to make a decision that could politically hurt the movement she represents, she’s been shown to be restrained.”
He added, “If no one is above the law, it’s time that the president recognizes this and acts upon it.”
Sheinbaum has decided against going after Rocha in the past. Before the indictment, her government had debated investigating Rocha and ultimately declined, concluding there was not enough evidence to warrant it, according to two people briefed on the decision who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe internal discussions.
Since the indictment, she has also acted with restraint. She denied the U.S. request to arrest Rocha and other accused officials, saying it lacked sufficient evidence. She said that Mexico’s attorney general would instead investigate the case. And she added that if the probe found no basis for the U.S. accusations, her government would view the indictment as
meddling in Mexico’s sovereignty.
“We cooperate and coordinate with the United States, but I’ve said it many times: We will never subordinate ourselves, because that is a matter of dignity,” she told reporters on Friday.
All eyes are now on how her government handles Rocha.
Viri Ríos, a prominent Mexican political analyst, said that Sheinbaum’s effort to slowwalk the extradition request is a smart political strategy. Immediately detaining Rocha and sending him north could embolden the Trump administration to indict more Mexican officials and destabilize her government, she said.
But, she added, Sheinbaum should also capitalize and truly investigate Rocha. “The Rocha case presents an opportunity for Sheinbaum to demonstrate her willingness to pursue corrupt politicians,” Ríos said. “And she has more internal support within Morena to do so than is widely assumed.”
But in recent history, Mexican officials have hesitated to investigate their own, said Gina Parlovecchio, a former U.S. prosecutor who led several high-profile prosecutions of Mexican cartel leaders, including that of Joaquín Guzmán, known as El Chapo. “We had little to no cooperation from the Mexican government in any of our investigations, including against public officials,” she said.

of a mayor. Some members of Morena, her party, also accuse Washington of pushing a narrative of widespread corruption in Mexico to undermine the country.
The U.S. government wants “to dictate whatever they want on our territory, overriding our independence and sovereignty,” said Gerardo Fernández Noroña, a Morena senator who was president of the Mexican Senate until last year.
Some Mexicans have also questioned whether the U.S. government truly cares about fighting the drug trade when President Donald Trump recently pardoned the former president of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernandéz, who had been imprisoned in the United States for helping to smuggle drugs into the country.
U.S. prosecutors have charged Mexican officials with corruption before, but typically when they have already left office — and after arresting them inside the United States.
In 2019, U.S. prosecutors charged Genaro García Luna, Mexico’s former security chief, with aiding cartels. López Obrador, the Mexican president at the time, was his political rival and did not dispute the charges. García Luna is now serving a 38-year prison sentence.
In 2020, U.S. prosecutors charged Gen. Salvador Cienfuegos Zepeda, a former Mexican defense minister, of doing the same. But the response from the Mexican government was very different. López Obrador was a close ally of Cienfuegos and threatened to expel U.S. agents from Mexico unless he was released.
Concerned about the bilateral relationship and strength of the case, William Barr, then the U.S. attorney general, sent the general back to Mexico, where the government quickly exonerated him.
“That was hugely devastating,” said Parlovecchio, who helped lead the case against Cienfuegos. “But it just gives you an example of how the tide has turned. That was during ‘Trump One’ and a different attorney general, and they certainly weren’t taking as muscular a posture toward the cartels as they are now.”
Sheinbaum is feeling that heat. Even while praising her personally, Trump has routinely threatened military strikes on the cartels in Mexico. Under that pressure, Mexico has ramped up collaboration with the U.S. authorities. The efforts have led to a reduction in homicides and the capture of several top leaders.
Sheinbaum has said her government fights corruption, pointing to its bust of a sprawling fueltheft ring inside the Mexican navy and the recent arrest
In highly unusual moves, Sheinbaum’s government has also sent 92 high-level cartel operatives to the United States outside the typical extradition process. U.S. authorities are now probably mining those cartel members for information, Parlovecchio said, which could eventually lead to more indictments of Mexican officials.
Spirit Airlines’ demise could help other airlines
By NIRAJ CHOKSHI
Spirit Airlines was once a potent force in the U.S. aviation industry. Its demise will reveal how strong that influence had been in recent years when air travel had already begun moving away from the lowfare model that Spirit pioneered.
The airline’s shutdown on Saturday after years of financial troubles resulted in the loss of 17,000 part-time and full-time jobs, and disrupted the plans of tens of thousands of travelers. But aviation experts say it is not entirely clear whether Spirit’s absence will have a significant, long-term impact on the industry, travelers or the U.S. economy.
Airlines will probably have an easier time raising fares and many will absorb Spirit’s gates, check-in counters and other assets at airports in the New York area, Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and elsewhere. But the effect may not be huge, aviation experts said, because Spirit had shrunk a lot recently and was in its second bankruptcy in two years.
“By the time the plug was pulled, Spirit was no longer a major player,” said Michael Boyd, an aviation consultant with the Boyd Group International. “Half the fleet was parked and sold off.”
In May 2024, the airline operated 3.4% of all domestic flights, according to Cirium, an aviation data firm. It filed for bankruptcy later that year and again in 2025. Before it shut down, Spirit’s schedule for May would have amounted to just 1.1% of domestic flights.
The airline’s diminished business was a major reason many analysts and economists were befuddled by the Trump administration’s efforts to save Spirit, which ultimately went nowhere because the government and the airline’s creditors could not reach a deal.
Most airlines are temporarily offering discounted fares to Spirit’s customers. But many experts believe the company’s absence will result in somewhat higher fares over time, though how much prices will rise is hard to predict.
Spirit’s presence at an airport helped keep fares down, a phenomenon that was studied by economists and earned the name the “Spirit effect.” Even in its reduced state, the company played an important role in forcing other airlines to keep fares low, some experts said.
“It’s at the low-fare end of the spec-

trum where the market price is established,” said Robert Mann, an aviation industry consultant and a former airline executive. “And it’ll make it easier for everyone else to raise prices at that level.”
But some aviation experts said the consequence may be overstated. Other airlines have spare seats and can absorb many of the customers Spirit catered to. And many people who flew on Spirit tended to travel only when they found very low fares, so they may simply choose not to fly as often now.
Fares would most likely have risen with or without Spirit, some analysts said. Airlines started raising prices in March to make up for higher fuel costs caused by the Iran war, and many have warned further increases are coming.
“It is the industry that is the big winner as unprofitable domestic capacity is further reduced,” William Swelbar, an aviation consultant and economist, wrote in an email. “Fares have to increase or we will lose more airlines to bankruptcy/consolidation.”
Spirit’s slow decline in recent years had broadly helped other airlines, most notably larger carriers like American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines. The cities where Spirit flew most included Atlanta, Los Angeles, Detroit, Dallas, Houston, Miami and Newark, New Jersey. Those urban areas are home to important airports for those large airlines.
Those carriers had found an effective
way to compete against Spirit: “basic economy fares.” In the 2010s, American, Delta and United introduced these fares, which were cheaper than standard economy tickets but did not include things like the ability to pick a seat or bring multiple bags on the plane. In recent years, use of these fares has grown, reducing demand for tickets from low-fare carriers like Spirit.
Some smaller airlines also stand to gain by Spirit’s absence, notably JetBlue Airways. JetBlue had already been expanding at Spirit’s home base, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, just north of Miami.
JetBlue said last month that it had added nonstop flights to 21 cities from Fort
Lauderdale over the past year, which it views as its third big hub airport after Kennedy International in New York and Boston Logan International. On Saturday, after Spirit shut down, JetBlue said it would add flights from Fort Lauderdale to 11 more destinations.
“It is full steam ahead in Fort Lauderdale,” JetBlue CEO Joanna Geraghty said on a call with investors and analysts last month.
Frontier Airlines, perhaps Spirit’s biggest competitor in the low-fare segment of the industry, stands to benefit, too. But it is facing many of the same challenges as Spirit did.
“The data suggests that Frontier will win because of its route overlap with Spirit,” Swelbar said. “But that overlap is also filled with basic economy seats.”
Spirit may help other airlines in another way. Its demise has suddenly made thousands of experienced airline workers available, including more than 2,000 pilots and hundreds of mechanics. United Airlines this weekend began an effort to recruit Spirit employees, saying it would pay special attention to their applications. Demand for pilots, mechanics and other professionals has been high for years.
But Spirit’s assets — planes, airport gates and other real estate, including at LaGuardia Airport in New York — won’t become available immediately. Many of those assets were used as collateral for Spirit’s loans, meaning they will be distributed through bankruptcy court proceedings, which could take some time.
“It’s not going to happen by Monday,” Mann said, “or next month, or probably for several months.”

Wembanyama refuses burden of hiding emotions
By JARED WEISS / THE ATHLETIC
To be an NBA player is to be a professional in compartmentalization. When you come up short, you don’t fail just in front of the people you see, but also the abstract world at large. Success and failure hinge on split-second decisions as you try to focus on trusting the training rather than fearing judgment.
The weight of internal expectations and

upholding the responsibility to the team is already enough pressure to push an NBA player to his breaking point.
There are no questions about how Victor Wembanyama feels. His actions have backed up his words all season. He is cold and calculated most of the time but vicious and primal on occasion.
All of this culminated in an emotional moment on the bench with his teammates as the San Antonio Spurs eliminated the Portland Trail Blazers last week, delivering him and many of his teammates their first playoff series victory. After the game, he was asked in French by L’Equipe’s Maxime Aubin about how he
turns his whole range of emotions on the court into a strength, and why he thinks that is so rare for elite athletes in general.
“That’s a tough question. I think it’s first and foremost a fear of judgment,” Wembanyama said in French, according to Aubin. “Like, this feeling that you have to act a certain way, social codes, I guess. Personally, I refuse to carry the burden of having to hide my emotions.”
What makes Wembanyama special is that he is chasing his own definition of greatness even while the existential implications of his pursuit may be on his mind. He is pushing himself to his own limits, even though those limits may be greater than those of any other person. When he shows his emotions, it reminds the world that he is, in fact, as human as everyone else.
“Being the best player out there, it’s good for him to show that,” his teammate Julian Champagnie said. “It’s good for him to express that. It’s good for the sport of basketball to show that guys actually care and want to

win, and want all these great things.”
Champagnie loves seeing Wembanyama unafraid of vulnerability, saying that the game is emotional and nobody truly understands it unless they are on the court.
Back in March, when the final buzzer sounded on a 25-point Spurs comeback against the Los Angeles Clippers, Wembanyama threw his head onto the shoulders of his teammates De’Aaron Fox and Keldon Johnson, overwhelmed with emotion. As he remained there, more Spurs came to celebrate him with joy.
“I was about to pass out from the first quarter from exhaustion,” Wembanyama told ESPN in his walk-off interview moments later. “That’s close to being the hardest game of my life.”
In December, after the Spurs’ NBA Cup final loss to the New York Knicks, Wembanyama went to the postgame news conference podium in tears. He said he had lost someone that morning (later revealed to be his maternal grandmother) and took one question before excusing himself for the evening.
Most players would take the night off from media duties when they were grieving a loved one. He could have done so, and the media in attendance would have respected it. But he understood the value of the news conference to the sport and to his own career. He recognized that, as the star of the team and a face of the league, he was responsible for showing up and taking accountability after such a high-profile loss.
He tried, willing to step to the podium while crying, hoping he could fulfill this mandate to carry the game forward, one that has been bestowed upon him as much as he has reached out for it. As his profile has skyrocketed and his career arc has suddenly shifted from budding talent to star, the external expectations have only caught up to his own.
Wembanyama has brought a refreshing honesty to the job over this past year. He answers questions transparently while keeping his emotions level most of the time. Yet the reason he has won so many hearts and minds, particularly this season, is that he gives pieces of himself as an offering to the world. There is this feeling that when you see him, you see the real him. It is a thrill not just to witness someone great through the filter of a screen, but to know that their true self is permeating.
His teammate Luke Kornet noted how the experience of being exposed to the media, television and the internet is strange. People are watching you without being present, yet you can only experience your own presence in that moment. That realization pushed Kornet to get away from social media and focus on carrying himself in a way to fit within the construct of the people to whom he is actually accountable in his world.
“Between my family and then my team, it’s like, that’s enough people to try to have your actions reflect,” Kornet said. “Because otherwise, if you’re caring about so many voices, then the ability to satisfy them is just going to be incomplete at the end of the day and kind of impossible.”
Kornet believes that most media members are trying to honestly represent the players to the public, but he admits that he feels a sense that he is a character in the story of basketball. The key is to understand that his place in that story is told through what he does and not necessarily his intentions.
Kornet appreciates when some athletes like Wembanyama choose to embrace their exposure in the public domain and put their full selves out there, but the goal can’t be to be understood by everyone.

As Victor Wembanyama’s “profile has skyrocketed and his career arc has suddenly shifted from budding talent to star, the external expectations have only caught up to his own,” writes Jared Weiss for The Athletic. (Reddit via r/NBATalk)
“Even your spouse or children or family, no one actually knows your exact interior perspective and experience in everything,” Kornet said. “This is where faith and religion ultimately come in. So obviously, it’s great to have people who do know you closer and feel like they can intimately understand you. But also, to a certain sense, you have to have peace with knowing who you allow close to you and who you’re going to share that with, and you’re cool being misunderstood.”
That distinction helped Kornet develop what he called an awareness of himself in the third person, recognizing that the character the outside world sees will have its own story, and he has to live in his own. This has forced him to make a real decision within himself of how to maintain his own truth.
It is something he can see Wembanyama working out in real time.
“I think that’s where your ultimate peace is,” he said. “To be able to live in that place.”
