The Puerto Rico Convention Center District Authority held a Memorial Day commemorative ceremony on Monday morning at the Antiguo Casino de Puerto Rico in San Juan, paying tribute to the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces and to those who gave their lives in the line of duty.
The ceremony featured the solemn presentation of the flags of the U.S. and Puerto Rico, as well as the POW/MIA flag and the America250 commemorative flag -- part of a national initiative marking 250 years of U.S. history.
The event brought together veterans, active-duty military personnel, soldiers’ families, representatives of the island government, and special guests in a formal act of remembrance, reflection and recognition. As part of the ceremony, attendees received the “Remembrance Poppy,” an internationally recognized symbol honoring the men and women who have served and sacrificed their lives in military service.
Adhering to official protocol, the ceremony included the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Nesdiel Rivera, the state coordinator for Generation250 -- as well as the “Fallen Comrade Table” ceremony, a military tradition used to honor soldiers killed in combat, those missing in action, and prisoners of war.
The event also featured a special tribute to the historical legacy of the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Borinqueneers,” recognizing the contributions and service of generations of Puerto Ricans within the United States Armed Forces.
During the ceremony, 98-year-old Borinqueneer veteran Ismael Heredia symbolically received the America250 commemorative flag from Sergeant Aníbal Rodríguez -- a member of the current 65th Infantry Regiment and the grandson of a Borinqueneer -- representing the continuity of service and legacy across generations.
“The generations that today enjoy freedom and stability have inherited a historical responsibility: to remember. This ceremony seeks precisely that -- to ensure that the sacrifice of those who served is never relegated to the past, but rather remains ever-present within our collective memory,” stated Veronica Ferraiuoli Hornedo, executive director of the Convention Center District Authority. “For Puerto Rico, participating in the America250 commemorative initiatives also represents an acknowledgment of the historical imprint that thousands of Puerto Ricans have left through their service, bravery, and commitment to entire generations.”
Public Safety Secretary Gen. Arturo Garffer delivered a special message in honor of the veterans and military personnel in attendance.
“On Memorial Day, we not only honor those who gave their lives to defend freedom and democracy, but we also reaffirm our collective duty to keep their memory alive,” he said.

Resident commissioner pays Memorial Day tribute in Morovis
Also on Monday, Resident Commissioner Pablo José Hernández Rivera participated in the official Memorial Day ceremony at the Puerto Rico National Cemetery in Morovis, alongside U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).
“This Memorial Day calls upon us not only to remember the fallen but to reflect on the price of the freedoms we enjoy,” Hernández Rivera stated in written remarks.
The ceremony brought together veterans, family members of fallen service members, military leaders, public officials, and community members to pay tribute to the Puerto Rican men and women who died in military service.
“For over a century, Puerto Rico has answered every call to service,” the resident commissioner said. “From Korea and Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan, generations of Puerto Ricans have served with extraordinary bravery and a profound sense of duty.”
During the event, Hernández Rivera highlighted Puerto Rico’s military legacy and the service of the Borinqueneers. He also remembered Puerto Ricans who were awarded the Medal of Honor for giving their lives to save comrades in combat.
“Today we honor their sacrifice and renew our commitment to be worthy of it,” he added.
Hernández Rivera also paid tribute to the memory of Major Ariana Linse Savino, a Puerto Rican Air Force officer who died this year while serving in Iraq.
Puerto Rico has maintained a legacy of military service for over a century, with Puerto Ricans participating in the major military conflicts involving the United States.

San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo is preparing to file a lawsuit this week in federal court against the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA), as residents and businesses in the capital city face hardship due to a lack of potable water.
The information was confirmed by New Progressive Party Sen. Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez, who recently introduced Senate Resolution 289 to investigate the ongoing water service interruptions in the capital city, which have cost some $1 million.
“I can tell you that Miguel Romero’s intention is to file this case in federal court this week, before Friday. He delegated the evaluation to a committee of lawyers a week and a half ago,” Morales said in a radio interview.
The senator added that after the San Juan mayor files the lawsuit, as expected, the upper chamber would then “be evaluating and reconsidering, and we could summon the [executive] president of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority to answer questions from the Puerto Rico Senate.”
While the mayor denounced an inten-

tional situation behind the lack of service in San Juan, which on Monday marked 20 days in areas such as Santurce, the senator said PRASA has opted to close the valves of the Superaqueduct near Toa Baja, preventing water from reaching the metropolitan area.
“I think asking for patience seems inappropriate at this time. You have to put yourself in the other person’s shoes to ask for patience from people who have been
carrying buckets of water for 20 days,” Morales said, acknowledging that while there had been problems in the past, they were not of the current extent and magnitude.
“That tank [the Pepsi Cola tank] is located in Toa Baja, where the water comes from the Superaqueduct. It supplies water to a large part of the San Juan area, and since 2025, some genius, right at the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority, has
decided to close that valve, preventing our communities in Santurce from getting their water from that tank,” the senator said. “That’s what you’re already hearing Miguel [Romero] and some others say -- throttling the valve, that’s it. […] They close it, it’s nothing more.”
Morales reiterated that he might summon PRASA Executive Director Luis González Delgado before a full Senate committee.
“I intend to request that the Senate president summon the [executive] president of the authority to answer questions that need to be answered,” he said.
“Possibly, possibly, we’ll see. My idea is to bring it before the Senate and have him answer many of my questions; I need answers. […] We are considering that [the full committee],” Morales said. “[…] I will wait for Miguel to file the case. […] For me, it is very important to have that case. To have it before us to see what elements Mayor Romero included there, where a series of requests and arguments will be made regarding what has been happening from last year until today with the different communities in the municipality of San Juan.”

Aguadilla Mayor Julio Roldán Concepción announced on Monday the official signing of the Aguadilla Veterans’ Bill of Rights.
Municipal Ordinance No. 95 makes Aguadilla a pioneer in the island’s western region by establishing expanded protections and benefits for veterans and their families.
The mayor said Memorial Day, which honors those who gave their lives in military service, was the best time to announce the recent signing of the Veterans’ Bill of Rights in his municipality.
“In Aguadilla we have begun to do justice to those who deserve it,” he said. “Aguadilla is once again at the forefront with a Bill of Rights that recognizes, protects and honors our national heroes, who defended peace and democracy with their lives in the common defense with the United States.”
Roldán Concepción pointed out that Puerto Rico enjoys a democratic society grounded in law and order thanks to the courage and sacrifice of veterans.
“Our veterans are the greatest advocates for freedom, justice, and happiness we enjoy today,” he said. “While other countries suffer from dictatorial and repressive governments, we have a free and democratic country thanks to those who have fought for our collective well-being.”
The mayor said the municipality’s Bill of Rights for the veteran is more comprehensive than the commonwealth’s version.
“Our bill of rights establishes protections and benefits that exceed those offered by the state government and by other municipalities …” Roldán Concepción said.
Among them:
* Priority on municipal property — Every veteran will have priority in the acquisition of municipal property.
* Educational access — Veterans’ dependents will have priority when applying for enrollment in the municipal education system.
* Educational leave — Any veteran employed by the municipality may apply for educational leave to continue his or her education.
* Health services — Priority will be given when requesting services from the municipality’s Mobile Medical Unit.
* Benefits for dependents with disabilities — Children or dependents with disabilities will receive the same benefits.
* Extension of rights to children of fallen veterans — Until they reach the age of majority, or without limit if they have functional diversity.
* Priority in municipal employment — All things being equal, the veteran will have priority.
* Free access to recreational facilities — Includes the
Aguadilla Shark Roller Rink, Discovery Bay Paddle Boat Park and other facilities.
* Construction tax exemption — For work on a veteran’s primary residential property.
* Reserved parking — Two veteran-only spaces are established in the town’s urban area.
“We will continue to work tirelessly on behalf of our veterans,” the mayor said.

With the Atlantic hurricane season rapidly approaching, local non-profit organization Techos Pa’ Mi Gente (Roofs for My People) has announced it will host its 2nd Annual Community Hurricane Preparedness Fair.
The event is designed to equip residents of the San José, Embalse San José and Valencia communities -- as well as the general public -- with the tools and knowledge needed to prepare for potential severe weather.
The fair is scheduled for this Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held at the Techos Pa’ Mi Gente (TPMG) facilities at 327 Almería Street in the Valencia Urbanization of San Juan.
Attendees will have access to educational workshops, informational booths, and expert guidance on essential safety protocols before, during and after a storm. Emergency supplies and shopping opportunities will be available on-site while supplies last, and a complimentary lunch will be provided to
the first 100 participants.
A headline event of the fair features meteorologist Carlos Omar Rivera, who will deliver a special presentation at 10 a.m. detailing critical updates for the 2026 hurricane season alongside practical weather preparedness strategies.
Organizers have also structured the fair to be a familyfriendly environment. Activities for children include a special 11 a.m. appearance by the beloved children’s character El Trotamundos, along with a distribution of storybooks while supplies last.
“This type of initiative seeks to strengthen community preparedness and create accessible spaces where people can learn, prepare, and connect with important resources to face hurricane season,” TPMG Executive Director Amarilis González said.
More information regarding the event, or about volunteer, donation and sponsorship opportunities, is available on the official TPMG platform.

Sen. Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez announced Monday that a closed hearing will be held on Senate Resolution 431, which aims to investigate the use of $19.5 billion allocated to the Medicaid Program and the Vital Plan.
The investigation has revealed that insurance companies owe the Medical Center in San Juan $16 million, the senator said in a radio interview.
Two public hearings have been held, but the third was canceled after summoned providers expressed fear of retaliation. As a result, a closed hearing will take place.
Morales highlighted the critical finding that insurance companies collectively owe substantial amounts to key hospitals, including the $16 million to the Medical Center, and noted the surprising disparity between rates paid to private hospitals and those paid to public institutions. He also announced pending updates on debts owed to laboratories.
The senator emphasized that new legislation aims to standardize payment rates across the public and private sectors and to regulate how private insurers hire physicians. He stressed the need for the Health Insurance Administration (ASES by its acronym in Spanish) to expand its staff to strengthen oversight of insurers and guarantee proper fund utilization.

An investigation by the island Senate has revealed that insurance companies owe the Puerto Rico Medical Center in Río Piedras $16 million, Sen. Juan Oscar Morales Rodríguez said.
“What struck me most was that the insurers […] were asking me for the government to audit them more because, when I asked them, ‘When was the last time ASES went there to evaluate, beyond the financial aspects, the medical processes, the things that are done?’ none of them could recall the date,” Morales said. “Unfortunately, ASES needs more resources. The office dedicated to this has seven employees. The question is whether, with seven employees, we can perform the oversight work we need to ensure that the money used in the health reform, which is millions of dollars, is being used appropriately.” Morales also said island Health Secretary Víctor Ramos Otero will travel to Washington next week to advocate for Medicaid program funds, which expire in 2027.

Vice President JD Vance made an unannounced visit to the Supreme Court this month to attend a private dinner in a wood-paneled conference room with Chief Justice John Roberts and dozens of the chief justice’s former law clerks.
Accompanying his wife Usha, who clerked for the chief justice nearly a decade ago, Vance was making a social call, people familiar with the dinner said. But Vance’s friendly pop-by illustrated the awkward dance that has been underway between the Trump administration and the nation’s highest court, as the administration has at times appeared to woo the justices even as President Donald Trump has repeatedly bullied and insulted them.
With the court preparing to issue major rulings in the coming weeks that will determine the fate of key aspects of the president’s agenda, Trump has vacillated between combative and conciliatory in his treatment of the justices.
He has seemed ever aware and at times resentful of the critical role the justices play in determining the lawfulness of his policies, with the court representing perhaps the one force in American government truly able to thwart his agenda. At the heart of the tension: a president who appears to believe that justices, especially those he appointed, should be loyalists rather than independent actors in a separate, equal branch of government.
Abigail Jackson, a White House spokesperson, said in a statement that the American people have “always valued President Trump’s ability to freely speak his mind and share his thoughts directly with them” — including about the court. The chief justice did not respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for Vance declined to comment.
Trump was furious with the court after it invalidated his sweeping tariffs in February. He called a news conference to vent, criticizing individual justices as “fools and lap dogs” and saying his two nominees who voted against him were “an embarrassment to their families.”
While past presidents have voiced disagreement and frustration with Supreme Court rulings, that kind of language and personal animosity has been unheard-of from a president. Standing silently by his side was the solicitor general, D. John Sauer. Trump’s former personal lawyer represents the administration at the Supreme Court in a role that has traditionally been so trusted by the court that it is nicknamed the “10th justice.”
Despite Trump’s anger, the administration has abided by the court’s ruling in the tariffs decision.
The U.S. government this month started to refund some of the roughly $160 billion collected from those tariffs, plus interest.
Days after the news conference, Trump toned things down at his State of the Union address, when he could have blasted the chief justice and other members of the court to their faces as they sat in their robes in the front of the House chamber. Instead, in his remarks, Trump merely declared the ruling to be “very disappointing.” Otherwise, he was cordial to the four justices who attended, shaking their hands and exchanging pleasantries as he made his way to the rostrum.
But in recent weeks, the president has returned to hammering the court, including in repeated social media posts, as he has been appearing to brace for another major loss when the court rules on his effort to end the guarantee of birthright citizenship. The decision is expected by late June or early July.
“It would be a disgrace if the Supreme Court of the United States allows that to happen,” Trump said during an event in the Oval Office on Thursday. “It’s all up to a couple of people, and I hope they do what’s right.”
Trump turned up the pressure in early April when he became the first sitting president to attend an oral argument at the court for the birthright citizenship case. He spent about an hour listening to the arguments before abruptly getting up and walking out while the session was still underway. Critics said it was a show of power designed to intimidate the justices.
The president subsequently complained in a social media post that the Supreme Court had “not even recognized or acknowledged” his presence.
At the same time, the president hosted all six of the justices nominated by Republican presidents to the White House last month for a state dinner honoring King Charles III of Britain and Queen Camilla. The dinner was held the night before the court heard a case about Trump’s immigration policies.
None of the three liberal justices attended, and neither the White House nor the court have said whether they were invited.
On Friday, two justices whom the president has praised were in the East Room of the White House. Justice Clarence Thomas swore in Kevin Warsh as the next chair of the Federal Reserve. Justice Brett Kavanaugh also attended.
Three of the justices who took part in the state dinner — Neil Gorsuch, Amy Coney Barrett and Kavanaugh — were picked by Trump during his first term, drawing them Trump’s particular attention and, at times, his ire. In a recent post, as he criticized Gorsuch and Barrett for voting

President
(Kenny Holston/The New York Times)
against his tariffs, he insisted they should have been “loyal to the person that appointed them.”
The justices seem to have struggled with whether or how forcefully to respond. They have not specifically addressed Trump’s personal insults and have not responded to requests for comment about his statements when asked. But they have at times politely pushed back in public appearances.
In recent interviews to promote his new children’s book, Gorsuch has rejected assertions that the justices should be loyal to the president.
“My loyalty is to the Constitution, the laws of the United States,” he said in an interview with CBS News. “That’s the oath I took. It’s really just that simple.”
The chief justice too has gently denounced the personal attacks — but indirectly. During an appearance at Rice University in March, he said harsh rhetoric aimed at justices is “dangerous.”
“It’s got to stop,” he added, without specifying whose rhetoric he was describing or naming Trump.
Colleen Sinzdak, a former law clerk to Roberts who argues frequently in front of the court, said the justices seem to be trying to stay above the political fray. By ignoring some of the attacks, the justices send the message that they see themselves as part of an institution rather than political actors scrumming with elected officials.
“It’s not supposed to be about you personally,” she said. “They are trying to embody that in how they are going about their business, and to the extent possible to do the things they would normally do — like going to state dinners.”
Likewise, Richard Lazarus, a law professor at Harvard University who has written frequently about the court, said the justices appeared to be trying to treat Trump like any other party in a case when they seated him in the public gallery for the arguments in the birthright citizenship case, rather than in a special seat reserved for presidents that is used for courtroom ceremonies.
Still, he said the president’s personal attacks on individual justices were “out of bounds,” representing a unique assault that went beyond the traditional push and pull between the branches of government.
“It does damage to the court as an institution,” he said, and it “generates threats to the individual justices and their families when the president attacks them in this way.”
Lazarus said he believed the justices should have declined to attend Trump’s state dinner last month, given that it appears only those nominated by Republican presidents had been invited.
“It’s wrong, irresponsible and undermines the integrity of the court, which all the justices tell us they believe in,” he said.

Over the past several days, as clouds darkened the sky over Arlington National Cemetery, familiar scenes played out: school children on field trips, tourists on guided tours and veterans wearing jackets and caps adorned with unit patches, walking in loose formations to visit military brethren lost in combat.
There have been at least 13 service members lost in the current conflict with Iran and it is unknown how many more may join the roll of the honored dead if a fragile ceasefire and potential peace deal fail.

The unknown dead of this and future wars has manifested at the cemetery, where an expansion is underway along the southern reaches of the grounds, adjacent to Section 60.
Far from the ceremonies of Memorial Day, Section 60 is where those lost in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars rest. The thousands of people who visit know the risks being faced by today’s military families through the loss they endured decades ago from another Middle East conflict.

Long before her son’s ashes were interred in Section 60, Sarah Vaughan thought of Memorial Day as just another threeday weekend, a calendar invite to head to the beach in the Tallahassee, Florida, area where she grew up.
“Memorial Day was just a holiday. I knew the meaning of it, but I didn’t pay any attention to it,” Vaughan, 72, said in an interview from her Vail, Colorado, home.
“But, boy, do I now,” she said.
Looking back, she said she realized that her son John S. Vaughan seemed destined for a military career. She remembered the schoolboy who sketched American flags into the corners of the school papers and always wore camouflage clothes around his hometown. Even his childhood TV favorites were The History Channel and The Military Channel, she said.
Vaughan described her son as “straight as an arrow,” doting on his younger sister Becca and looking after his single mother whenever he could. His independent spirit led him to hunt, thread his own lures for fly fishing and to get a pilot’s license.

John Vaughan joined the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and after graduation entered the U.S. Army.
By June 2006, he was a 2nd lieutenant deployed to Mosul, Iraq, when a sniper ended his life on patrol at age 23, Vaughan said.

More than 20 years ago, in 2005, Patty Stubenhofer spent Memorial Day searching for answers as she stood in Section 60 holding her three children in front of the grave of their father and her husband, U.S. Army Capt. Mark Stubenhofer.
Military service had been a big part of her upbringing. Her father served in the Navy; her grandfathers were in the Air Force and Navy; and her grandmother joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps.
Yet, she said, she did not fully realize the commitment of military life until she was married, experiencing the months apart because of training or deployments. Stubenhofer said she also learned the pride and love of a country born of those sacrifices. Two decades later, she said, it is still hard to put that feeling into words.
Mark Stubenhofer was killed Dec. 7, 2004, in a firefight in Baghdad.
“I am living the military family’s worst nightmare and it doesn’t take a conflict for them to become a surviving family,” she said, referencing training accidents and other noncombat deaths. “There’s nothing I can say that can prepare anyone for this.”
“I spent my first Memorial Day as a military widow holding the hands of our three children,” she said, “searching for the right words to explain the significance of this day.”
Ensuing Memorial Day weekends were not spent at graveside ceremonies, but with other surviving military families at the TAPS Good Grief Camp, she said.
During those weekends, her son and two daughters were paired with a mentor and placed in groups with other children to learn how to process their grief. Now, her children are in their 20s and have become mentors for the program.
“To us now, every day is Memorial Day,” she said. “It’s knowing that he loved us and his country so much that he was willing to stand on the front line and sacrifice his life to protect us and our freedom. ”

Soon enough, the major artificial intelligence companies will take their soaring valuations and go public. When they do, a great many very smart, very eccentric people will suddenly possess enormous liquid wealth — and many have committed to giving great sums of it away.
The future of American philanthropy isn’t the central drama of the AI age, but it isn’t a sideshow, either. As Nan Ransohoff wrote this month on Substack, AI wealth could soon add as much as $100 billion to American charitable giving every year. She describes this as a potential “third wave” of philanthropy, after the now-distant Carnegie and Rockefeller era and the recent Bill Gates and Warren Buffett wave. And she expects it to be focused on the “AI transition” and what lies beyond, especially questions of “flourishing, meaning and what makes a life good” in the shadow of increasingly capable machines.
Let’s suppose she’s right about the philanthropic rush and about the quest for meaning as an organizing impulse. I want to make a personal appeal to the AI philanthropists: Take a lesson from your Gilded Age predecessors, and treat beauty as a central charitable pursuit. Build monuments, statues, museums, universities, cathedrals, public gardens — and yes, even mansions for yourselves. Leave a physical legacy to future generations, not just a record of programs and disbursements. Recognize that meaning inheres in architecture, art and landscape as much as in more

measurable goods.
This was a great failure of the most recent philanthropic era. At its best, the infrastructure established by figures like Gates delivered effective efforts to reduce poverty and fight disease; at its worst, it threw money after fashionable political causes and education fads. But there was no real legacy when it came to physical infrastructure — no great beautification campaigns, no beloved architectural landmarks, no equivalent of the Gilded Age’s expansions of museums and libraries and concert halls, and few personal expressions of extravagance (like the Newport mansions or Hearst Castle) for future tourists to admire.
At the beginning of the 20th century, philanthropic dollars had already helped build the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Carnegie Hall, the campuses of Vanderbilt, Stanford and the University of Chicago, a network of urban parks, various impressive churches and an array of private homes that would themselves become public spaces within a few generations. Tastes vary, but I do not think that the monuments raised by today’s superrich are in any way comparable.
In part this reflects the challenges of building in a more regulated and sclerotic America, in part it reflects the failings of contemporary architecture. (Where new money builds new buildings, they often look like the Obama Star Destroyer in Chicago.)
But it’s also a problem with Silicon Valley culture specifically, where the idea that the rich person is supposed to be too busy to worry about taste has been folded into the entire tech enterprise, like a gray T-shirt, from the start.

by that era’s gilded rich. Like other such expositions, most of the buildings were dismantled, but the Palace was beloved and endured, with a later reconstruction enabling its permanence.
Sit there for a while, in a space that’s relatively “useless” and yet essential to its city. Figure out what the people who funded its construction understood about beauty and the good life. Now go thou and build likewise.

As Will Manidis writes in a recent essay on the cult of the techworld grinder, the Silicon Valley rich seem to have a “terror of being seen to have money and to enjoy it,” a terror of their excess wealth “being visible and not disguised.” This leads to a performative philistinism: I live in a box and wear the same outfit and eat bioengineered slop so my company can crush all its competitors. I don’t have time to be a snob or show off anything I’ve made.
But rich people prove their value to society not just in business success, but when they create things that only surplus can generate and only a cultivated taste can shape. And those creations, in turn, can make the worlds of ordinary people feel more elevated, transcendent and meaningful — whether they’re attending a school or experiencing a concert or wandering in a park or even visiting a tycoon’s home long after the original owner is dust.
Aesthetics is by no means the only place where meaning lies. But if AI money is going to work in this terrain, it cannot neglect beauty in the way that recent philanthropy has done.
I know of at least one tech founder, Stripe’s Patrick Collison, who is putting money into the search for new aesthetic schools. My advice to others who want to follow his example is to take a Waymo from your tech HQ or frontier AI lab over to the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, part of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in 1915, which was funded partially by public money, but partially

When you own a small hotel filled with grand pianos and a museum full of treasures, what do you do with it?
If you are sculptor Jan D’Esopo, you fill your beds with music-loving travelers and your grands with pianists of all sizes, ages and nationalities, playing anything from Liszt to Nicodé, from Mozart to Astor Piazzolla.
This week, the 12th annual edition of the Ian Hobson International Piano Festival, one of D’Esopo’s most prestigious events, opened at The Gallery Inn in Old San Juan. Front and center is a four-star international lineup of pianists/docents who are sharing their considerable skills with 23 talented pianists on at least six pianos, including the pièce de résistance, the 1937 nine-foot, 1,000-pound Steinway Model D, which D’Esopo’s father, Dr. Joseph D’Esopo, a medical professor and serious amateur pianist, bought from the Yale University School of Music. It was later brought to Puerto Rico and has held a place of honor in The Gallery Inn for half a century.
Every night there are new performers on this venerable instrument, starting with the professors until the students catch up. The concerts, which are free for the local public, are being held every night at 7 through Saturday.
In the exclusive opening lineup are Hobson, Israeli Boaz Sharon, Romanian Camelia Goila and Chinese Muen Vanessa Wei. They will also spend the week polishing the already advanced skills of 23 young pianists from around the world.
Each participant in the free workshop will get four master lessons and two public concerts in a unique 16th-century milieu. All expenses, including room and board, will be free of charge, thanks to the substantial subsidy from the Puerto Rico chapter of the Steinway Society.
Hobson, who is also an orchestra conductor, is an emeritus professor at the University of Illinois in Urbana, where he founded the Sinfonía da Camara, a chamber music group. He is also a professor at Florida State University.
A specialist in the Romantic repertoire, Hobson has 60 records to his credit, including the complete works of Chopin, Beethoven and Schumann.
A worthy successor
Hobson’s pupil Wei grew up on the Chinese island of Gyangu, known as the “Piano Island” for its long musical tradition. She started studying piano at age 4 and at 15 the family moved to Beijing, where she completed the first stage of her musical education at the Beijing Conservatory. She now has a doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana. Wei recently made waves with her recordings of unknown works by Jean Louis Nicodé, a Pole of Huguenot descent known for his late Romantic compositions characterized by a

novel polyphony.
Another of Hobson’s former students at Urbana is Goila, who got her earlier music training at Academia de Música George Dima in her hometown of Cluj-Napoca, Romania’s economic and cultural hub with its major university. Goila is the daughter of the late acclaimed clarinetist Ian Goila, with whom she made several recordings.
Veteran professor Sharon, one of the world’s most prominent experts in pedagogy, is director of piano studies for the Young Artists Program at Boston University Tanglewood Institute. At the Belgium Conservatory, he studied under the revered piano teacher Stefan Askenase, known for his direct connections with Romantic composers Franz Liszt and Frederic Chopin through their pupils.
Sharon is also a prolific recording artist specializing in 20th-century French and Brazilian music, especially composers Claude Debussy and Darius Milhaus.
The 23 students and their docents began arriving over the weekend, settling into their rooms courtesy of The Steinway Society and D’Esopo, owner of the inn for the last six-plus decades. They concentrated on testing the pianos, meeting their roommates and not getting lost in the centuries-old labyrinth of artfilled chambers.
The concerts by the teachers began Monday and continue today, Tuesday, with two performances.
By Wednesday it will be time for the students to show their stuff. And by Sunday, they will be ready to pack their bags, full of magic memories of a colonial
has advanced their own gifts to the cultural world more than they can ever measure.
The Gallery Inn is on the corner of San Justo Street and Norzagaray Boulevard. For information on individual concerts, call (787) 722-1808.

Stocks surged and the U.S. dollar and oil prices slid on Monday as the prospect of a deal to end the Iran war buoyed risk appetite, although a lack of clarity over when the Strait of Hormuz would open kept enthusiasm in check.
The nearly three-month-long conflict in the Middle East has driven energy prices sharply higher and reshaped the global rates outlook, as inflation concerns intensify following Tehran’s effective shutdown of the key strait.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he had told his representatives not to rush into any deal with Iran and his administration played down hopes of an imminent breakthrough.
Just a day earlier, Trump said Washington and Iran had “largely negotiated” a memorandum of understanding on a deal that would reopen the waterway, which carried one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments before the war.
Chris Weston, head of research at Pepperstone, said markets have become less focused on the timing of a resolution and instead been keeping an eye on the tone of the headlines.
“The tone has been consistently towards some sort of resolution... We’ve become very patient for a resolution deadline,” he said.
Stock markets brushed off comments from Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson on Monday saying that while many topics had been agreed, this did not mean Tehran is close to signing a peace deal.
The pan-European STOXX 600 climbed around 1% to 631.1, while Nasdaq futures were 1.4% higher and S&P futures were up 1%. However, liquidity was likely to be thin, with several markets including in Britain and the United States closed for public holidays.
The euro zone government bond market was on a tear, with Germany’s 10-year government bond yields hitting their lowest

since April 8, last down almost 10 basis points while Italy’s 10year yields fell to their lowest since April 17.
For much of the year, oil prices have steered broader markets, as investors sift often conflicting signals from Washington and Tehran since a fragile ceasefire took hold in April.

On Monday, oil prices hit two-week lows, with Brent crude futures down over $5, or about 4.9%, to $98.45 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate was at $91.67 a barrel, also down about 4.9%. [O/R]
Analysts expect oil prices to stay elevated even if there is a resolution in the near term, and they are unlikely to return to levels before the war as it will take time to remedy supply chain

disruption from the conflict.
Last week, Barclays maintained its 2026 average Brent crude oil price forecast at $100, though it said risks are skewing higher.
The euro was up 0.3% at $1.1640, while the Japanese yen firmed to 158.91 per U.S. dollar as the safe-haven dollar gave up some of its recent gains. [FRX/]
In Asia, Japan’s Nikkei jumped roughly 3% to roar past the 65,000 level for the first time and Taiwan stocks rose to 43,644, both closing at record highs.
Global stocks have mostly shrugged off war worries to focus instead on all things AI and a strong earnings season, which has pushed equities to record highs through the year.

With Iranian officials in Qatar for talks on ending the war in Iran, President Donald Trump issued conflicting signals Monday over how much progress had been made in the negotiations, vowing that any deal would be “great and meaningful” or “there will be no deal.”
Nearly every vital aspect of a potential peace deal remains unclear, including the fate of Iran’s nuclear program and missile stockpile, whether the agreement would cover the war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and whether Iran would continue to assert control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Nor was the timing certain. Trump said his negotiators were in no rush to close the agreement.
He also called on countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia to sign on to the Abraham Accords to normalize ties with Israel as part of the initial agreement — to which they are highly unlikely to agree. If more countries sign up to the accords, it could placate some Iran hawks in the Republican Party who have expressed misgivings about the potential deal.
Iran likewise poured cold water on hopes for an imminent deal to end the war and reopen the strait, which Iran has blockaded since the U.S. and Israel attacked in late February, throttling global oil and gas supplies.
“It is true that we have reached conclusions on a large portion of the issues, but no one can claim that the signing of an agreement is imminent,” Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said Monday, according

to Iran’s state broadcaster.
Iran has said any agreement should also end the fighting in Lebanon. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said Monday that Israel intends to intensify its attacks against Hezbollah, Iran’s ally.
Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament, led his country’s delegation in the Qatari capital, Doha, according to Iranian state media. According to two diplomats, the delegation arrived Monday and also included Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s foreign minister.
Ending the U.S.-Israeli campaign against Iran would allow Trump to extricate himself from an unpopular war that has battered the global economy.
In Doha, Iranian and Qatari officials were discussing what to do about two critical issues: the strait and highly enriched uranium in Iran, according to two diplomats who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomacy.
On Sunday, a senior U.S. official had told reporters that Iran had, in principle, committed to giving up stockpiles of enriched uranium that could become the basis for a nuclear weapon. The official spoke anonymously to discuss the sensitive talks. On Monday, Baghaei said Iran was not discussing details of its nuclear program.
Speaking at a Memorial Day observance at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday,
Trump paid tribute to the 13 U.S. service members killed in the war with Iran, saying: “These incredible men and women gave their lives to ensure that the world’s number one state sponsor of terror will never have a nuclear weapon. Oh, and they won’t. They will never have a nuclear weapon.”
Here’s what else we’re covering:
— Oil markets: Oil prices fell sharply Monday, with Brent crude, the global benchmark, down more than 5%, to about $95 per barrel. The price of oil remains around 30% higher than it was before the war.
— Strait of Hormuz: Even if an agreement between the United States and Iran is reached, the flow of oil and gas from the Middle East could take months to return to normal. A lot has to happen before the roughly 1,500 ships that have been stranded in the Persian Gulf can start moving.
— Israel’s reaction: In Israel, talk of a potential deal was received with concern, with some politicians warning it would fail to constrain Iran’s nuclear capabilities.
— Lebanon: As fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah continued in Lebanon on Sunday morning, it was unclear how any U.S.-Iran deal would address the fundamental issues at play in the war there.
— Global diplomacy: The senior leaders of Pakistan, which has been brokering the talks between the United States and Iran, visited China on Monday. China has close commercial ties with Iran and is the biggest buyer of Iranian oil. Shehbaz Sharif, the Pakistani prime minister, posted on social media that he and other top officials had met with Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, and discussed peace talks.

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada on Monday drew on his experience with Brexit to warn that a referendum the province of Alberta is planning for October on a possible separation from Canada could turn out to be a “dangerous bluff.”
Carney was governor of the Bank of England during the vote by Britain to leave the European Union in 2016.
He now leads a country that could see its
Western oil-rich province break away after Premier Danielle Smith of Alberta announced last week she would push for a referendum on separation.
The vote, scheduled for Oct. 19, will ask Albertans to decide if they want to remain in Canada or if they want to hold a separate, binding referendum to secede. Smith has been roundly criticized for her decision to hold the referendum and for the specific phrasing.
Pro-independence activists argue they’re being robbed of a chance to truly ask Alber-
tans if they want their own independent country, while supporters of staying in Canada are incensed that the question is even being asked.
“I saw firsthand what happened in the United Kingdom when the view was, vote for this, it’ll be soft, and then we’ll negotiate,” Carney told the news media in Ottawa on Monday. He was referring to the suggestion by some voters and politicians, who did not necessarily want Britain to leave the European Union but wanted to have a referendum on it, that the Brexit vote would help extract conces-
sions from the European Union while staying in the bloc.
“They’re still, 10 years later, trying to undo what people didn’t think they were voting for,” Carney added.
As the country’s central bank governor, Carney had cautioned against Brexit, a position some criticized him for at the time as a breach of his apolitical role. After the vote, he had the task of forming monetary policy to support the British pound as the country’s currency and economy took a post-Brexit hit.

Pope Leo XIV on Monday set out a sweeping vision for corporate executives, politicians and individuals who will shape and be shaped by the future of artificial intelligence, warning leaders to safeguard humanity from AI’s most disruptive effects.
Leo’s declaration came in the form of a papal encyclical, an open letter to “all people of goodwill” that ran to roughly 42,300 words in its English version. It outlined his desire to protect human dignity and agency in an age in which technology threatens to replace humans in many professional and social roles. He presented it alongside Christopher Olah, a cofounder of Anthropic, a major AI developer, in a symbolic gesture of dialogue between leaders of the spiritual and technological worlds.
While emphasizing that “technology should not be considered, in itself, as a force antagonistic to humanity,” he wrote that “the pursuit of greater profits cannot justify choices that systematically sacrifice jobs.”
Among other things, Leo called for:
— Government regulation of the private companies that are driving the development of AI.
— Protection and retraining for workers whose jobs are threatened.
— Education to help students think critically about the technology.
— Action to protect children from violent, hypersexualized or fake information online that is often generated by AI.
— Safeguards to ensure that humans, not AI, remain responsible for all decisions regarding the use of weapons.
Above all he emphasized the importance of retaining a fundamental social role for all humans. “A society that guarantees employment to only a small fraction of the population, despite having a high level of technical development, risks exposing many to forced inactivity, a lack of responsibility and the absence of

daily tasks and stimuli, resulting in human and cultural impoverishment,” he said.
“This creates a paradox of material progress and anthropological regression that undermines the foundations of a just and stable social peace,” he added.
Clergy, scholars and technology leaders have been expecting the pope’s document for months, with many anticipating that it would form one of the most significant moral warnings yet about the misuse or overuse of AI.
A year ago, on his second day as pope, Leo made clear his focus on the perils of AI, telling the College of Cardinals that, under his leadership, the church would address the risks that the evolving technology poses to “human dignity, justice and labor.”
He has since repeatedly spoken about AI, including during a trip to Turkey and Lebanon, in an address to Catholic university leaders and even when celebrating the international day of mathematics. Last week, the Vatican announced it had created a commission of senior Catholic officials to discuss the challenges posed by AI.
Pope Francis, Leo’s immediate predecessor, had also warned about the dangers of AI and called for the ethical use of technology.
Although Leo publicly presented his encyclical Monday, he formally signed it on May 15, the 135th anniversary of the publication of “Rerum Novarum,” — or “Of New Things” in English — a major encyclical written in 1891 by his namesake, Leo XIII.
The pope’s encyclical was
timed to prompt comparisons with that earlier document, which guided Catholic teaching on how to protect workers after the technological and industrial disruptions of the 19th century.
Written amid the upheaval of the Industrial Revolution, “Rerum Novarum” sought to safeguard the rights and dignity of the working class and became one of the foundational texts of modern Catholic social teaching. It called on governments to “save unfortunate working people from the cruelty of men of greed, who use human beings as mere instruments for money making,” even as it praised the “discoveries of science.”
In the new encyclical, titled “Magnifica Humanitas,” or “Magnificent Humanity,” Leo struck a similar tone, warning of the new threat to workers posed by AI.
Work, he wrote, is more than a way of earning income, but “a requirement of the human condition, a normal path toward maturity, development and personal fulfillment.” He called for “the protection of employment opportunities and the irreplaceable role of the individual.”
Leo expressed concern at how emerging AI tools might take over many routine tasks and jobs, implicitly devaluing those who do not have the training or ability to perform the work that remains available to humans. Leo wrote of the importance of preserving human dignity and warned of the “insidious” ideology that “suggests that every person must earn or justify his or her own worth, to the point of attributing greater value to those who are more efficient or effective.”
Unions and charities that were formed to protect workers during the first industrial revolution, Leo wrote, would not be sufficient to protect laborers during a technological transition that could leave millions of people unemployed.
“New collaborative efforts are needed among political leaders, labor organizations, the business world and the scientific community in order to develop rapidly adequate shared regulations and protections, including at the international level,” he wrote.
The encyclical also called for imposing the “most rigorous ethical constraints” on weapons developed using AI, continuing Leo’s — and the Vatican’s — long-standing opposition to war.
“The growing ease with which autonomous weapons systems can be deployed makes war more ‘feasible’ and less subject to human control,” Leo wrote. That, he added, contradicted “the principle that armed force should be used
only as a last resort in cases of legitimate selfdefense.”
Although the encyclical includes significant references to Scripture and religious teachings, the document in many ways reads like a policy paper from a think tank or a lawmaker.
Leo wrote in detail, for example, of the importance of protecting children, who are particularly susceptible to the warping effects of technology.
“Psychological and psychiatric literature has documented with growing insistence how early and unsupervised exposure to digital devices and social media can negatively impact sleep, attention span, control of emotions and relationships, especially during the most vulnerable stages of life, at times with tragic consequences,” he wrote.
Parents need support from schools and governments, he said, to help their children resist the excessive use of AI, the possibilities of “isolation, bullying and cyberbullying,” and the pressure “to share intimate images or sensitive information.”
Scholars are divided about what effect, if any, the document will have on the technology industry, in which rival tech titans are racing for dominance.
Brian Patrick Green, director of technology ethics at Santa Clara University in Northern California, said some technology leaders “will have to take it seriously in a sense,” partly because it provides them with “a moral imperative.”
Writing in the encyclical, the pope recognized the autonomy of governments and private companies. The church, he said, “does not claim to supplant the responsibilities of politics or institutions, but offers itself as a foundation,” urging other institutions to “recognize and promote whatever serves the dignity of persons, the vitality of communities and the common good.”
Others said that an encyclical’s primary targets are the clergy and the faithful.
“I don’t think the ‘tech bros’ in Silicon Valley will listen that much,” said professor Noreen Herzfeld, director of a program on technology and ethics at St. John’s School of Theology and Seminary in Collegeville, Minnesota. “But I think within the church, it will be there as a reference for priests and bishops and particularly for those of us who are educating seminarians or young people.”
Priests can use the contents of the document to guide conversations with parishioners who share their concerns about the technological pressures of modern life, Herzfeld said.

EBay, once Silicon Valley’s face of the ecommerce revolution, has found itself at a bizarre and unexpected crossroads. The company that pioneered the online marketplace has weathered highs and lows since the 1990s and in recent years has managed to find its footing again. Sales are up, profits have improved, and its stock price has doubled over the past two years.
But suddenly, eBay may have a hostile takeover to navigate.
Earlier this month, GameStop, a video game retailer, made an unsolicited offer to acquire eBay for $55 billion. EBay formally rejected the proposal May 12, calling it “neither credible nor attractive.”
It is a wild gamble by Ryan Cohen, GameStop’s CEO, who said he wanted to lead both businesses and transform the combined group into a “legit competitor” to Amazon. He warned eBay’s board of directors that if they were unreceptive, he was prepared to go straight to shareholders in a hostile bid. The proposal added a jolt of volatility to eBay, just as it seemed to have found its groove again.
Although it remains a bazaar for people to hawk anything from chipped dinner plates to weathered lawn mowers, the San Jose, California, company has been transformed under Jamie Iannone, its latest CEO. Over the past several years, the company refocused on power buyers in product categories with especially high resale demand, such as trading cards, sneakers, handbags, car accessories and electronics.
“It’s a bit of a dark horse,” said Sky Canaves, a principal analyst of retail and ecommerce at eMarketer, a research firm. “It exists as a retailer of last resort: the discontinued, sold-out refurbished, open-boxed and resold.”
EBay was founded in 1995 by Pierre Omidyar, as AuctionWeb, and was one of the tech companies that helped make buying and selling online mainstream. Meg Whitman joined as CEO in 1998 — when the company had 30 employees — and stayed on for a decade.
Integrating auction and payment systems was appealing in the industry’s early days, when there was little trust in online transactions. The model has influenced many digital platforms since, according to Ziwei Cong, a business professor at Georgetown University.
In 2014, eBay announced the spinout of PayPal into a separate public company, under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn. PayPal made up about half the company’s business at the time.
As Amazon became the internet’s chief purveyor of virtually everything, eBay took a different route that helped it grow. Amazon handled all things duplicable; eBay traded in the one-of-a-kind.
“EBay survived by focusing on areas where uniqueness matters more than speed or convenience,” Cong said. “Its strength today comes from connecting niche buyers and sellers rather than competing with mainstream e-commerce giants such as Amazon.”
Iannone, the former chief operating officer of Walmart’s e-commerce unit, took the top job at eBay in 2020 as the company struggled to rebound from years of stagnant sales. His predecessor, Devin Wenig, was ousted in 2019 as activist investors, including Elliott Management and Starboard Value, clashed with eBay’s management.
At the time, eBay’s core business — buying and selling items on its marketplace — was in dire condition. Efforts to lure younger shoppers interested in used goods were not taking hold, and the volume of all goods sold on its platform had fallen for several straight quarters.
Under Iannone, renewed attention on products such as collectibles and car parts has shifted the makeup of what’s sold on eBay. Those sorts of products account for about 70% of the volume of all merchandise sold on its marketplace.
EBay has also aggressively invested in authentication services — used to spot fakes — in an effort to build trust with shoppers
worried about buying counterfeit items in the peer-to-peer marketplace.
In 2021, eBay acquired Sneaker Con’s authentication business to boost its offering for streetwear enthusiasts. It also began guaranteeing the authenticity of handbags from designer brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès.
The next year, it debuted a service to verify trading cards, working with Certified Collectibles Group and Professional Sports Authenticator. Then it added jewelry verification through a partnership with the Gemological Institute of America. This month, eBay announced that it would integrate a global database of stolen watches into its services.
Such services are crucial because eBay competes with specialized resale marketplaces in each of those sectors, such as StockX in sneakers, the RealReal in fashion and Chrono24 in watches. Those businesses have spent years developing systems to verify the authenticity of products on their platforms and build confidence with their
customer bases.
The turnaround at eBay has also included restructuring efforts. In February, the company said it would eliminate about 800 roles, or 6% of its workforce. The layoffs were spread across the company as management looked to reallocate resources.
The company recently reported strong results: Revenue in the first quarter rose 19% from a year earlier, to $3.1 billion, and eBay said it expected revenue to rise as much as 10% in the current quarter.
Yet as eBay looks to the future, the GameStop offer looms. In interviews with media outlets, Cohen said he would make sweeping changes to reduce costs and remake the company’s corporate culture.
Paul Pressler, eBay’s chair, rejected GameStop’s bid in a letter addressed to Cohen on May 12, describing the online marketplace, under its current management, as “a strong, resilient business that has delivered meaningful results over the past several years.”

Kyle Busch, who grew up racing go-karts in cul-de-sacs and became one of NASCAR’s greatest and most polarizing drivers, pairing immense and aggressive skill with a badboy persona, died last Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was 41.
He died after being hospitalized with a “severe illness,” his family, his racing team and NASCAR said in an initial joint statement. On Saturday, Busch’s family received a medical evaluation that said he died after severe pneumonia progressed into sepsis, resulting in rapid and overwhelming complications, according to a statement released by the family as reported by The Associated Press.
The AP reported previously that Busch was training in a racing simulator Thursday when he became unresponsive, three days before he was scheduled to compete Sunday in the CocaCola 600-mile race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.
He had seemed to be unwell recently. On May 10, Busch radioed his crew near the end of a race in Watkins Glen, New York, requesting that a doctor give him “a shot” after he reached the finish line. According to the television broadcast, Busch had been experiencing a sinus cold exacerbated by the G-forces and elevation changes that can make the course, built on rolling terrain, feel like a roller coaster.
Asked after the Watkins Glen event by The Athletic whether he was feeling better, Busch said, “You can kind of hear it — I’m still not great,” referring to a persistent cough.
His death shocked the racing world. In 22 full-time racing seasons, the versatile Busch was unsurpassed with 234 cumulative victories while competing in NASCAR’s three national racing series: the top-tier Cup Series, the second-tier O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and the Craftsman Truck Series.
“We’ve lost our Kobe Bryant,” driver Denny Hamlin, a former teammate of Busch, posted on Instagram.
Busch embraced the nickname Rowdy, after a character in the 1990 racing movie “Days of Thunder,” which starred Tom Cruise. It was an apt choice. His critics found him at times as unbearable as he was unbeatable. Especially as a younger driver, he seemed to savor the cartoonish heel persona of a professional wrestler. After a 2018 victory in Joliet, Illinois, he faked crying

when the crowd booed.
He cursed out crew chiefs and car owners. In 2011, he intentionally wrecked Ron Hornaday Jr. while a Truck Series race in Texas was under a caution flag, leading to a fine, a suspension and a temporary loss of his sponsorship by candy company M&M’s.
But fans of Busch and his older brother, Kurt, a Hall of Fame NASCAR driver, were so dedicated that they had themselves tattooed with the numbers of the race cars the Busches drove.
In recent years, after becoming a father to two children and less dominant on the track, Kyle Busch seemed to some observers to have become more tempered, as his brother also had before retiring from full-time racing in 2023.
Kyle Busch and his wife, Samantha (Sarcinella) Busch, a lifestyle blogger and author whom he married in 2010, spoke openly about their challenges with infertility. In 2015, they started a nonprofit called the Bundle of Joy Fund, which has awarded nearly $2.4 million in grants to help cover the costs of in vitro fertilization. According to the fund, the treatment has resulted in the births of 111 babies.
In an appraisal after Busch’s death, Ryan McGee, a senior writer at ESPN, wrote, “If you sought a path to follow that proves a person can be as raw and irritating and pissed off as any human being has ever been, but then, with time, evolve into a man who figures out a way to balance that atomic bomb in his gut with a downright sweet, public, loving marriage, fatherhood and advocacy. You know where you could find that example? Kyle Busch. Man.”
Kyle Thomas Busch was born in Las Vegas on May 2, 1985. His father, Thomas, was a mechanic who drove a mobile tool truck and raced locally. His mother, Gaye Busch, worked in administrative support in the local school district and was a race official who, according to Kyle, wanted him to become a dentist.

But his career path seemed set when he attended his first race at just 10 days old, bundled up in the grandstand, his mother recalled in a 2016 interview with the Las Vegas Motor Speedway website.
At 6, Busch began driving a makeshift go-kart in a cul-de-sac in the family’s neighborhood, steering while his father operated the gas pedal. When he attended races, he sat in the grandstand with his grandmother and filmed them. At home, he worked on cars in the garage. By 10, he was serving as the crew chief of Kurt Busch’s dwarf car team.
“It was a hobby, and we didn’t know it would grow to this level,” his mother recalled, but she acknowledged that Kyle “just went with the flow and never said he was going to do anything else.”
When he was 15, his parents built a car for him. A year later, when Kyle was 16, Kurt Busch told reporters, “You think I’m a pretty good race car driver? Wait until you see my brother.”
As a high school junior, Kyle Busch attempted to begin his own big-time career in the Truck Series, but NASCAR was funded by Winston at the time, and a legal settlement reached by the nation’s largest tobacco companies prohibited anyone younger than 18 from participating in events sponsored by the companies.
In 2003, when he was eligible, Busch joined the Rick Hendrick racing team and told the AP, “I need to be my own person and make my own way and show everybody I can drive.”
He finished second in his debut in the O’Reilly Series. In 2004, he won five races in the series and finished second overall, adorning each victory with a bow to the crowd.
His greatest success came with the racing team of Joe Gibbs, the former Super Bowl-winning NFL coach. Busch recorded 56 of his 63 victories in the Cup Series and overall championships in 2015 and 2019, along with 90 victories in the O’Reilly series. He also owned Kyle Busch Motorsports, whose drivers won 100 races in the Truck Series.
In addition to his wife, his parents and his brother, Busch is survived by his son, Brexton, and his daughter, Lennix.
After the 2022 season, Busch left Gibbs Racing and joined Richard Childress Racing. It was a perhaps surprising rapprochement more than a decade after Childress memorably said, “Hold my watch,” to his grandson before putting Busch into a headlock and throwing punches at him after a 2011 Truck Series race in Kansas City, Kansas.
The two joked about the incident, but Busch struggled to win Cup Series races for the team, with his last coming on June 4, 2023. On May 15, in a Truck Series race in Dover, Delaware, Busch delivered what became a valedictory performance, leading most of the way in a victory.
When asked in a television interview why winning never got old, he replied, “Because you never know when the last one is.”
