Senate holds hearings on competing permitting reform bills

The Senate Committee on Innovation, Reform, and Appointments, chaired by Senate President Thomas Rivera Schatz, held its fifth public hearing Monday as lawmakers continued evaluating two competing proposals to overhaul Puerto Rico’s permitting system.

The measures -- Senate Bill (SB) 1173, authored by Rivera Schatz, and SB 1183, introduced by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón -- have drawn extensive testimony from municipalities, agencies, and industry groups over the past several weeks.

Rivera Schatz opened the session by reiterating that the Senate’s goal is to modernize and streamline permitting without weakening environmental protections, public safety, or the oversight responsibilities of government entities. He again expressed reservations about the breadth of SB 1183, which proposes a sweeping reorganization of the permitting structure.

“One bill is an extensive 800-page [measure] with numerous implementations and amendments, while the other focuses on streamlining daily operations to immediately expedite processes as much as possible,” Rivera Schatz said, contrasting his proposal with the governor’s. He warned that the structural changes contemplated in SB 1183 -- including the repeal of 14 laws, harmonization of 29 others, and the creation of new boards, offices, and geoeconomic zones -could take more than a year to implement.

The Senate president questioned whether the government has the capacity to execute a reorganization of that magnitude.

“It would take more than a year from the formal establishment of the structure until it begins operating,” he said, adding that the concentration of decision-making powers proposed in the governor’s bill raises additional concerns.

Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez testified in support of several objectives in SB 1183, including uniformity, administrative coordination and technological modernization. However,

he emphasized that any reform must preserve environmental oversight functions and protect federal delegations from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Quiles recommended keeping the authority to issue permits separate from environmental compliance responsibilities, ensuring that the DNER retains jurisdiction over inspections, monitoring, complaints and enforcement. He also urged lawmakers to maintain the specialized technical capacity of environmental agencies and to coordinate any structural changes with the EPA.

Regarding SB 1173, the DNER secretary deferred to comments previously submitted by the Office of Permit Management and the Puerto Rico Planning Board, particularly on operational matters.

In a pointed exchange, Rivera Schatz defended language in subsection B of Section 10.50.03 of SB 1173, which affirms the DNER’s authority to identify ecologically sensitive and conservation areas. The agency had raised concerns about the scope of that authority. Rivera Schatz argued that the provision neither expands nor diminishes the powers of the DNER or the Planning Board, and contrasted it with SB 1183, which he said would remove the latter from project management roles.

Ismael Sánchez, president of the Puerto Rico chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America, endorsed elements of both bills aimed at reducing duplication and accelerating evaluations through digital tools. He supported formalizing the Single Information System as the centralized platform for filing and managing documents, arguing it would reduce delays and prevent redundant submissions.

Sánchez also backed the creation of a consolidated construction permit to integrate civil and environmental processes, allowing multiple professionals to review projects simultaneously. He recommended eliminating certain pre-consultation requirements in incidental procedures and expediting the Incidental Single Permit for projects that already have approved construction permits and completed environmental assessments.

José Tirado García, president of the United Firefighters Union of Puerto Rico, cautioned that efficiency reforms cannot come at the expense of fire prevention or human safety. He insisted that the state fire prevention inspector must retain a central role in the permitting system, not a “residual” one.

Tirado García called for mandatory public inspections for high-risk occupancies, periodic audits of private certifications, and required consultation with the Firefighters Bureau’s technical team before adopting regulations related to fire safety. He cited past tragedies, including the Dupont Plaza fire, as reminders of the consequences of weakened oversight.

Students block access to RUM despite court order

University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus Interim Chancellor Miguel Muñoz Muñoz said Monday that protesters once again blocked access to the campus, following efforts to keep the gates open in accordance with court orders.

“During the efforts at the Physics gate, students confronted members of the University Police while they were attempting to comply with the court orders related to opening access to the campus,” Muñoz stated.

Campus staff attempted to facilitate access through the Physics gate as part of the

campus reopening process.

Later, protesters moved to the Barcelona and Finca Alzamora gates, which were open, and closed them, Muñoz said.

The interim chancellor added that the protesters again blocked access to the campus, formed human chains, and lay down at the institution’s entrances.

The situation arose after a court order was complied with last week, and a gradual return to in-person activities began on May 13 at the campus commonly known by its acronym in Spanish, RUM.

“We reiterate our call for demonstrations to be conducted peacefully and without obstructing access to the campus for students,

faculty, and staff,” Muñoz said.

The interim chancellor urged all sectors of the university community to act with prudence and respect to ensure safety and peaceful coexistence on campus.

He noted that the university will continue to promote spaces for dialogue and communication to address the issues raised by the university community.

Students at several campuses launched demonstrations to demand the resignation of UPR President Zayira Jordán Conde after she removed several chancellors. The protesters also said the president is doing little to defend the university from budget cuts and attempts to privatize it.

DNER upgrading boat ramps for fishing, other recreational use

Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) Secretary Waldemar Quiles Pérez said Monday that the agency is working to improve the infrastructure of recreational fishing ramps under its jurisdiction.

“At this time, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources has under its jurisdiction the freshwater recreational fishing ramps in the reservoirs of Cerrillos, Lucchetti, La Plata and Guajataca, and the Tortuguero Lagoon (brackish),” Quiles said in a press release. “On the other hand, we also have jurisdiction over the saltwater, Guayanilla, La Parguera (Crayolas), Combate, Caño Tiburones and Bay View ramps in Cataño. Likewise in the resorts of Boquerón and Isla de Cabra.”

The DNER secretary added that the agency “is currently designing a new project for the enjoyment of sailors and recreational fishermen in the area of the Caño Tiburones natural reserve in Arecibo.”

“This space will allow access to the interior of the reserve and will have spaces for a recreational fishing platform in compliance with the ADA [Americans with Disabilities Act], a ramp for boats under 19 feet in length, an area for embarking and disembarking kayaks, parking for single vehicles or those with a trailer, and bathrooms for the use of recreational fishermen,” Quiles said. “The approximate cost for this project is $1 million.”

Also this year, the Las Crayolas Recreational Boat Ramp was built in the municipality of Lajas with an investment of $528,300, the DNER chief noted.

PRFAA announces bipartisan infrastructure funding agreement

The Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA) announced a bipartisan agreement on Monday related to infrastructure funding.

House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-Mo.) and ranking minority member Rick Larsen (D-Wash.) agreed to advance legislation to fund various infrastructure programs nationwide for five years. The programs include roads, bridges, public transportation, rail, and road safety.

The Building Unrivaled Infrastructure and Long-term Development for America’s 250th Act (BUILD America 250) primarily increases federal funding to Puerto Rico’s highway program by $95 million, allocating a total of $995 million for fiscal years 2027 through 2031. In addition, the act includes HR 919, authored by the governor, which

specifically authorizes Puerto Rico to issue commercial driver’s licenses valid throughout the United States.

The new bill also funds the development and improvement of bridges. Under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) of 2021, Puerto Rico received $225 million for those purposes.

The committee plans to approve the legislation Thursday and aims for a full legislature vote soon. The law must be signed before IIJA’s authorization expires Sept. 30, 2026.

“To prepare the BUILD America 250 Act, the committee requested recommendations from various sectors early in this Congress. That is why, through a letter from the governor dated April 28, 2025, we formally informed the committee of our priorities,” PRFAA Executive Director Gabriella Boffelli said. “At PRFAA, we have maintained constant communication regarding the reauthorization

of this legislation. This ensured the continuity of those priorities for Puerto Rico. The inclusion of language to issue commercial driver’s licenses is a significant achievement. We also secured additional funding to improve infrastructure across the island. …”

Ex-OGPe official referred to authorities over alleged violations in RFP

The former deputy director of Puerto Rico’s Office of Permits Management (OGPe by its acronym in Spanish), Norberto Almodóvar Vélez, has been referred to the Department of Justice, the Office of the Comptroller, the Government Ethics Office (OEG) and the Human Resources Office of the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC) after an internal investigation found evidence of possible violations of the Penal Code, the Government Ethics Act, federal procurement rules and internal agency regulations.

The investigation -- conducted by the external law firm HRM LLC, led by former OEG Director Hiram Morales and former judge Eloina Torres Cancel -- concluded that Almodóvar exerted improper pressure on an evaluation committee, retaliated against an employee who raised concerns, and attempted to obstruct the inquiry. The case centers on a competitive request for proposals (RFP) for a federally funded advertising contract worth between $1 million

and $2 million, intended to support public outreach on Puerto Rico’s building codes.

DDEC Secretary Sebastián Negrón Reichard said two members of the evaluation committee approached him in late March to report what they described as a pattern of pressure from Almodóvar and his personnel director, Charlene Newman, to favor a particular bidder and later alter the scores they had already submitted.

“What they told me was deeply troubling,” the DDEC secretary said. “They were alarmed and disturbed by what appeared to be improper pressure to influence the outcome of a competitive process.”

Negrón Reichard ordered an immediate internal review, which was later expanded and handed to HRM LLC. The firm’s findings describe not only the alleged pressure but also a series of actions aimed at delaying or derailing the investigation. Those actions included Almodóvar’s attempts to challenge the DDEC’s authority over OGPe, efforts to obtain a legal opinion to undermine the probe, and failures to appear for scheduled interviews.

The controversy intensified when Almodóvar circulated a letter to OGPe employees on May 14, accusing the government’s “Con Permiso” public-education campaign of undermining staff morale. Negrón Reichard said the letter was strategically released as a distraction.

“That letter was a smokescreen,” he said. “Respecting employees does not mean using them as a human shield to cover up one’s own actions.”

The DDEC secretary emphasized that no federal funds were lost because the RFP was halted before any award was made. The process has now been formally canceled to “clean the administrative record” and ensure compliance before restarting.

Almodóvar has been removed from his trust position as deputy director, and both he and Newman -- who hold career positions -- have been placed on summary suspension pending an administrative hearing within 10 days.

“My legal and ethical obligation is to protect the integrity of the processes I oversee, regardless of the personal or professional cost,”

Roig Fuertes denies increase in trust positions at Family Department

Family Secretary Suzanne Roig Fuertes denied on Monday that the proposed budget for fiscal year (FY) 2026-2027 includes an increase in trust positions or in the payroll for those positions.

“The Proposed Budget for FY2027 for the Secretariat of the Department of the Family does not include an increase in the number of trust positions, nor a net increase in their payroll,” Roig Fuertes stated in written remarks.

The official said any characterization to the contrary “is incorrect and deviates from the Department’s

budgetary reality.”

Her statements come after Popular Democratic Party Senate Minority Leader Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz alleged that the budget recommended by Gov. Jenniffer González Colón allocates an additional $1 million for trust positions within the Family Department.

Hernández Ortiz stated in a press conference that the increase was part of a pattern of increases in line items related to trust positions and professional services within the proposed budget for FY 2026-2027.

Roig Fuertes noted that the total budget for payroll and related costs for the Family Department secretariat for FY 2027 amounts to $17 million, a figure

Trump administration pushes narrative of Christian founding at rally

Thousands of people gathered on the National Mall on Sunday for a daylong rally blending Christian prayer and political fervor, a gathering President Donald Trump had touted as an opportunity to “rededicate America as one nation under God.”

The crowds came to the heart of Washington to hear from spiritual and elected leaders and members of Trump’s Cabinet. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth appeared in a recorded video message early in the day, exhorting the crowd to “pray without ceasing,” a phrase that appears in the New Testament.

He recounted an apocryphal account of President George Washington praying at Valley Forge in the winter of 1777-78, a moment that has become a touchstone for some Christians who argue that the founders envisioned America as an explicitly Christian nation.

“Let us pray for our nation on bended knee and let us ask our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, as Washington did on that momentous day, so help us God,” Hegseth said, to cheers from the crowd.

With speeches and Christian music performed against a symbolically potent backdrop at the heart of U.S. government, the rally aimed to crystallize the narrative that the nation’s founding was an intentionally Christian project, a framing disputed by many scholars. The separation of church and state has long been a bedrock principle of American democracy. The First Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.”

Trump did not appear in person, as some attendees had hoped he would. His participation consisted of a prerecorded video in which he read a chapter from the Old Testament book of 2 Chronicles. The video appeared to be the same one that Trump recorded in the Oval Office last month for a marathon reading of the full Bible organized by an activist in Texas. The passage is a favorite among many of his Christian supporters, who interpret it as a call to national repentance and subsequent blessing.

Vice President JD Vance appeared in a recorded video that played late in the day.

“We’ve always been and still are a nation of prayer, and thank God for that,” he said. In brief remarks that cited George Washington and Charlie Kirk, he celebrated reports of “a wave of young Americans returning to the pews,” and asked for the crowd’s prayers.

Attendees waited in an hourslong line along the Mall between the Washington Monument and the Capitol building to enter as Christian worship music wafted from the stage. Inside the event space, many in the crowd raised their hands in praise, with some waving flags and banners in ecstatic expressions of worship. Some had laid out blankets on the lawn, where they picnicked, read from Bibles and prayed in small groups.

House Speaker Mike Johnson appeared in person toward the end of the program, delivering a long prayer that surveyed decades of American history, describing events from the Civil

War to the attacks of 9/11, as moments that showed God’s hand in American history.

“We hereby rededicate the United States of America as one nation under God,” he concluded, to rousing cheers from attendees who had been listening for hours under a hot, almost cloudless sky, with long lines for food and restrooms.

Johnson has argued that separation of church and state is “misunderstood,” and that “the founders wanted to protect the church from an encroaching state, not the other way around.”

The rally, the main religious event of the Trump administration’s 250th anniversary plans, reflected the political success of a right-wing Christian movement that has intensified efforts to end the separation of church and state.

Many of the country’s founders were Christians, and references to religion are present in many of their writings. The role of Christianity in America’s founding is complex, however, and partisans have used historical data points and texts to bolster their political positions for decades.

The idea that the founders saw America as an explicitly Christian nation is “nonsensical” and “dead wrong,” said Joseph Ellis, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author of many books on America’s founding.

Instead, the founders were explicitly pushing back against an assumption that persisted through the Middle Ages, that states needed common religious preference to unite people, he said.

“It is a falsification of the meaning of the American Revolution,” he said.

Conservative Christians have long used educational programs, political activism and reimagined iconography to advance the view that

America was founded as a Christian nation. Intensity around this narrative has grown as the share of Christian Americans has declined.

Trump rose to office promising to give Christianity power, and his rallies increasingly fused evangelical worship and political grievance, as right-wing political activity became a kind of holy act for many of his supporters.

In the second Trump administration, Christian worship has become routine inside the White House, and Republican power brokers have infused their public responsibilities with a sense of Christian mission. Hegseth has invoked divine purpose to justify American military power, and prayed to “King Jesus” at a White House dinner.

The prayer event showed that the separation of church and state was “under extreme attack,” said Rachel Laser, president of Americans United for Separation of Church and State, which has filed seven lawsuits against the administration related to its turn toward Christianity.

“If Trump really wanted to celebrate what is unique and foundational about America, he’d be celebrating our promise of church-state separation and religious freedom for all,” she said.

American adults largely do not want Christianity to be the country’s official religion, but over the past two years, the portion who do want it to be has increased from 13% to 17%, according to a recent survey from the Pew Research Center.

Several attendees said that the last time they had been in Washington was to participate in the election protest on Jan. 6, 2021, that turned into an attack on the Capitol building.

“To be back here for this is a redemption,” said Lynna Zapata, a pastor in west Texas, who added that she was not among those who breached the building. “And it’s us seeing the fruit of what we prayed for five years ago.”

Zapata said her experience on Jan. 6 became “traumatic” because of the disjunction between her positive experience and media reports on the attack.

There are things that still need to change in the country, Zapata said. But being back in the heart of Washington, surrounded by people praying and singing along to Christian music with the blessing of the president, she said, was a sign that things were moving in the right direction.

Conspiracy trial will test Trump’s aggressive tactics against protesters

Federal prosecutors will try to make the case this week that three activists who protested immigration enforcement last summer crossed the line from political dissent into criminal conspiracy — a legal theory that prompted the top federal prosecutor in eastern Washington to resign rather than sign off on the charges.

The trial is likely to be a closely watched test of the Trump administration’s push to prioritize immigration protest cases and the strategy of using conspiracy charges to prosecute demonstrators not accused of specific violent acts.

“Usually if a protest gets out of hand and people are hurt or property is hurt, you see charges based on that,” said Mary Fan, a former federal prosecutor and a University of Washington law professor. “They’re not going after people based on

specific harm done. They’re stretching conspiracy charges to target protesters and people who organize protests.”

Bajun Mavalwalla II, Justice Forral and Jac Archer will stand trial starting Monday on charges of conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers stemming from a June 11, 2025, protest in Spokane, Washington. An additional six people were charged but took plea deals to avoid trial.The demonstrators tried to stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from transporting two Venezuelan immigrants — who were in the country legally at the time but had outstanding immigrationrelated warrants — to the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma, Washington.

Protesters linked arms and created makeshift barriers to block driveways and entrances to the federal building. Prosecutors said a van meant to transport the immigrants had its windows spray-painted over and its tires deflated. Local police responded with smoke grenades and pepper balls, arresting more than 30 people, most on misdemeanor charges typically associated with protests, including trespassing and failure to disperse.

The Spokane protest coincided with a wave of protests responding to the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and a memo from the Department of Justice ordering U.S. attorneys to prioritize immigration protest cases.

In the days after the demonstration, Richard Barker, then the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, directed prosecutors to examine whether the Spokane demonstrators could face charges of conspiracy to impede or injure federal officers. But rather than pursue charges, he resigned.

“We’re used to seeing people arrested because they refused to leave an area or they are engaging in civil disobedience,” Barker said Friday. “But when have we used the federal government to police that? That to me is a distinction with a difference.”

His successor, Stephanie Van Marter, signed the indictments returned by a federal grand jury, making the Spokane protest one of several recent cases in which federal prosecutors have used conspiracy charges against anti-ICE demonstrators. In Minnesota earlier this year, prosecutors used conspiracy and civil rights statutes to charge dozens of people involved in a

protest inside a St. Paul church, arguing that the group coordinated its actions to interfere with religious worship.

Mavalwalla, Forral and Archer have all said they refused to plead to lesser charges because they believe their First Amendment rights were violated. They are accused of attempting to block federal officers from leaving and pushing and shoving in the scrum that followed, not the most serious violence prosecutors say occurred at the Spokane event. In charging documents, for example, prosecutors said that Archer used sandbags and other obstacles to block a driveway and that he used social media to ask others to “risk arrest to block the exits to ICE.”

Each man faces up to six years in prison if convicted. Prosecutors could not be reached for comment Friday, but in charging documents and public statements, they have said that the nine people charged in the protest intended to prevent law enforcement officials from during their jobs and were willing to use violence. One of the original defendants, who has reached a plea deal, brought a box cutter to the demonstration to slash van tires. Another picked up an incendiary device fired into the crowd by Spokane police and threw it back at law enforcement. And another man who was charged but reached a plea agreement was accused of striking a federal officer from behind.

In plea agreements, U.S. attorneys noted that they could have charged protesters with other felonies, such as damaging federal property, but did not.

Fan said the case was significant because prosecutors were “going after people who rally others to protest under the banner of conspiracy.” That, she said, “is remarkable in a nation that values the First Amendment and where the law recognizes concerns about chilling political speech.”

In this case, prosecutors will attempt to win a jury conviction in a county that went for Donald Trump in 2024 and is far more conservative than other parts of Washington west of the Cascade Mountains.

“I’m hopeful that our neighbors see this for what it is, an attempt to silence dissent,” said the Rev. Emily Kuenker, a pastor with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America who has been active in Spokane civil rights work. “And if they don’t, we’ll just keep fighting.”

Agrand summit in Beijing is a natural time to assess the state of the U.S.-China competition, the dynamics of great power conflict, the balance of forces in this new Cold — or maybe just Cool? — War.

It’s also a good time to revisit my own predictions. Six years ago, in the early days of the coronavirus, I argued that rather than a “Chinese century” we might be looking at a “Chinese decade,” a window when China’s power would hit a peak and the American position would be maximally endangered — but with a more favorable balance awaiting the United States in the later part of the century, if we could get through the Chinese maximum unscathed.

One part of that analysis was simply wrong. I was writing at a moment when the U.S. response to the pandemic seemed much more shambolic than Beijing’s efficient containment strategy, and I assumed that there could be a kind of COVID dividend for China from that difference. In hindsight, America’s stumbling approach actually proved more effective than China’s in the long run, because the People’s Republic eventually found itself in a permanent-lockdown trap that yielded all kinds of social and economic damage.

But in other ways, the 2020s have proceeded somewhat as I expected. The American imperium has been hard pressed on every front, and our leadership — slumping and senescent in the last presidency, obnoxious and bullying in this one — has gifted China a reputation for relative stability, notwithstanding Xi Jinping’s own aggressive and repressive moves.

There is a lot of talk about rebuilding American manufacturing,

and the Trump era has seen a partial decoupling of the United States and China, a clear shift away from the “Chimerica” model that defined the 2010s. But the decoupling is taking place in the shadow of a profound Chinese industrial advantage and continuing Chinese scientific and technological success. We can debate what it means that China lags just behind Silicon Valley in the artificial intelligence race, but our edge in frontier models doesn’t feel like a definite hard-power advantage as long as China is radically outpacing us in building machine tools, robots, ships and drones.

Six months ago, I was telling myself an optimistic story about the national security balance, where the United States maintained an edge in battlefield experience — with our support for Ukraine against Russia and our interventions in Iran and Venezuela serving as a testing ground for new weapons and AIenabled tactics. But watching the U.S. military stockpile collapse under the pressure of a regional war against Iran this year should make everyone skeptical that our advantages are adequate for a sustained conflict in East Asia. Fighting Iran to a stalemate seems like the kind of thing that happens just before you fight the Chinese and lose.

So the world of the 2020s does seem to have gone China’s way in very important respects. To the extent that comparisons to the actual Cold War are relevant, China is a more powerful material competitor than the Soviet Union ever managed to become, and our so-far-unsuccessful Iranian gamble has left the American hard-power position looking as parlous as it’s ever been.

the evidence of increasing Chinese confidence, even arrogance and hubris, about the inevitability of American decline. Just how confident can Chinese people really be in their culture’s future if the rising generation is so disinclined to reproduce? Just how confident should China’s leaders be that they can outlast the United States if their population could be cut in half over the next few generations? How much power, hard or soft — and China’s global cultural influence remains notably limited — can a rapidly aging civilization expect to project?

At the very least, any scenario where Chinese power doesn’t ebb has to involve radical technological disruption. As in, a world where robots and AI take over an extraordinary share of economic and creative labor. Or a world where radical health improvement makes population aging far less economically significant. Or a world where technology revolutionizes human reproduction, making it possible for authoritarian states to engineer repopulation, like the World State with its hatcheries in Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World.”

But what about the world of the 2040s or 2060s? Six years ago I wrote that China’s growth rate might be slowing, making it less likely to achieve either the living standards of its East Asian neighbors or eclipse the United States as the world’s largest economy. Since then, the Chinese attempt to lock in a broad economic sphere of influence through its Belt and Road Initiative has hit repeated setbacks. And as it turned out, 2021 was the point of greatest nominal-GDP convergence with the United States, and since then the U.S. has grown faster while China has struggled with its COVID hangover and various internal problems — raising the possibility that there will never be a moment when the Chinese economy is the biggest in the world.

Or maybe we should call it a likelihood rather than a possibility, since it’s incredibly difficult to generate high rates of growth under conditions of rapid population aging — and the other great trend of the last six years is that China’s demographic situation now looks much, much worse.

In any of these scenarios, a potential Chinese age in human history will look like no era or imperium we’ve ever seen before. Whereas if you imagine a future that remains at least somewhat normal, somewhat human, it still seems reasonable to short the Chinese century and bet that Beijing’s power is peaking now or soon.

Bulgaria wins Eurovision Song Contest as Israel takes second

Bulgaria won the Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna this past weekend after a nailbiting finish in which it triumphed at the last second over Israel, whose participation in the contest has been a source of strife for the competition’s organizers and many fans.

The victory was a shock, given that Bulgaria’s entry, “Bangaranga,” performed by the singer Dara, did not feature among the pre-show favorites. But when the results of a public vote were added to scores awarded by national juries, Dara catapulted past Israel’s entrant, Noam Bettan, beating him by a wide margin.

It was a first Eurovision victory for Bulgaria, which debuted at the competition in 2005 and sat out the last three editions, citing high costs.

The surprise win rounded off a troubled edition of the high-camp singing contest, whose run-up was overshadowed by protests

over Israel’s involvement. Five nations, including some Eurovision stalwarts, boycotted the event because of Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip.

Those countries, including Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain, also voiced concern that the Israeli government had previously spent heavily on YouTube ads seeking votes for Israeli participants and had mounted a social media campaign. The government’s actions did not break Eurovision’s rules, but upended conventions in an event that bills itself as apolitical.

Despite the furor, fans seemed focused on the music and the onstage antics rather than politics once the competition began Saturday night at the 16,000-capacity Wiener Stadthalle arena. The four-hour spectacle featured the usual mix of pyrotechnics and outré outfits, including a Finnish violinist in thigh-high boots and a Lithuanian singer in silver body paint.

Dara was less kookily dressed, but her winning song had its own sense of spectacle.

Little-known outside her home nation before Eurovision, she is a star in Bulgaria who started out participating in the country’s version of “The X Factor” talent show 10 years ago. Since releasing her debut single in 2016, Dara, whose real name is Darina Nikolaeva Yotova, has recorded two albums and has been a coach on Bulgaria’s version of another talent show, “The Voice.”

Throughout this week, when Eurovision semifinals were held in Vienna, reporters repeatedly asked Dara about the meaning of the word “bangaranga.” She posted an explanation on Instagram, defining it as “your higher self stepping forward” and noting that it was “inspired by kukeri — ancient Bulgarian ritual performers who scare away evil.”

She told one interviewer that “bangaranga” could mean anything at all: If “you don’t know what to say, just use ‘bangaranga,’” she said.

Despite Bulgaria’s victory, this year’s Eurovision is likely to be remembered mainly for

the tension around Israel’s participation. The five boycotting nations, which also included Iceland and Slovenia, had called for a vote last year by Eurovision’s member broadcasters on whether to bar Israel from the event. Instead, Eurovision announced rule changes that limited how artists can promote their songs before the final and lowered the maximum number of votes each viewer could cast from 20 to 10.

Eurovision’s director, Martin Green, said the rule changes addressed the perception that Israel was having an unfair influence on the contest’s results, rather than any actual problem.

But questions around Israel’s participation in Eurovision look set to continue. On Saturday, a spokesperson for Belgian broadcaster VRT said it wanted a vote among Eurovision’s members on the rules around which countries participate in the competition and “a clear statement against war and violence.”

“Today,” she added, “the chances are slim that VRT will send an artist next year.”

Mel Brooks donates his archives to the National Comedy Center

As the 2,000-Year-Old Man prepares to turn 100, he’s looking to history.

Mel Brooks — who will hit the century mark in June and whose titanic career includes playing an ancient man with a thick Jewish accent answering questions about subjects like the invention of fire (credit goes to a guy named Murray) — is donating his personal archives to the National Comedy Center in Jamestown, New York.

Chronicling one of the pillars of modern comedy, this archive covers nearly 15,000 documents and 5,000 photos that shed light on a lifetime of making jokes. It includes the development of scripts he helped create for the pioneering sketch series “Your Show of Shows,” one of television’s first comedy hits, and early scripts for “Spaceballs” (back when it was called “Planet Moron”).

The archive also features storyboards and other material from every movie he has directed, including his blockbuster parodies of Broadway (“The Producers”), Westerns (“Blazing Saddles”) and horror (“Young Frankenstein”). Among the many personal photos is a shot of Brooks with Gene Wilder, who starred in all

three of those films.

“I’m honored that my contributions will be preserved for future generations at the National Comedy Center — especially because it’s a place that was meaningful to my best friend, Carl Reiner, who believed in the importance of preserving comedy’s history,” Brooks said in a statement. Reiner, who was Brooks’ partner on the five 2,000-Year-Old Man albums, died in 2020 and his archives were donated to the National Comedy Center the next year.

“I know he’d be happy that our work will be around for the next 2,000 years, or maybe even more,” Brooks added.

Conversations about the donation began five years ago, and while many major comedians, including Joan Rivers and George Carlin, have donated their files to the organization, Brooks’ contributions are particularly important, said Journey Gunderson, the executive director of the center. “It’s as big as it

gets,” she said, “especially considering the duration of Mel’s career and the way he so fearlessly satirizes the darkest moments of humanity in the post-World War II era.”

No one in comedy made fun of the Nazis more frequently than Brooks. Martin Short, playing the moronic celebrity interviewer Jiminy Glick, once asked him, “What’s your big beef with the Nazis?” Brooks quipped, “I think they were rude.”

Long before he dressed up as Hitler and skated around an ice rink in “History of the World, Part I,” Brooks fought Germany as a member of the U.S. Army in World War II. Some of the earliest material in the archive comes from this era, including his comedy notebook and a photo of him in uniform that he believes he was sending home to his mother.

For students of comedy, one of the most valuable documents in the collection is a handwritten draft of the lyrics for “Springtime for

Hitler,” the song from the intentionally awful musical at the center of the plot of the landmark comedy “The Producers,” made first as a movie in 1968, and then turned into a Broadway musical in 2001.

The jokes in this song are now some of the best known in comedy (“Don’t be stupid / Be a smarty / Come and join the Nazi Party”). But this draft reveals a lyric that is unfamiliar: “Maybe other men have vigor and dash / But other men don’t have that mustache.”

In an email, Brooks explained: “I’m very proud of the mustache line, but in the end, it didn’t make it in.”

US small caps, consumer stocks, housing shares could bear brunt of yield spike

As the spike in bond yields re-emerges as a ⁠risk ⁠for equities, some corners of the U.S. stock market are ⁠particularly vulnerable.

Shares of smaller companies, especially those that are unprofitable or reliant on debt, are in the crosshairs. Economically sensitive sectors such as consumer or housing-related companies could falter, while dividend-paying stocks may lose appeal, undercut by more attractive Treasury payouts. Technology, the largest part of the U.S. stock market based on weighting, could see pressure, particularly among shares that gained significantly during the market’s recent rally, such as semiconductors.

“If most of the value depends on future cash flows, cheap debt, private-market marks, or a resilient consumer, higher yields do real damage,” said Joshua Barone, wealth manager at Savvy Advisors in Reno, Nevada.

A global bond rout continued to cloud ⁠markets on Monday, as rising ⁠energy prices stemming from the Middle East war drove inflation worries and the potential for interest-rate hikes around the world.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield hit 4.631% during the session - its highest level since February 2025 - although it had pulled back as of Monday morning and was last around 4.59%. Yields move in the opposite direction to the price of bonds.

Rising benchmark yields tend to pressure equity valuations, and U.S. stocks could be particularly exposed with major indexes around record highs.

Companies and consumers face higher borrowing costs, which can weigh on economic growth and corporate profits. Higher yields can also make fixed income returns more competitive.

Many smaller companies rely on debt financing, which becomes more expensive as yields rise.

The prospect of higher rates hurting the U.S. economy ⁠could ⁠also be a harsher blow for smaller companies, ⁠which tend to be more domestically focused, investors said.

“Small caps rely more on the consumer and more on the capital markets,” said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife John Hancock Investments. “And both of those can be strained with higher rates.”

Many smaller companies have yet to turn ⁠a profit, meaning their values are heavily linked to expected future cash flows. As yields rise, those cash flows lose luster as investors can more immediately realize a higher return from safer Treasuries.

As yield-spike fears took hold on Friday, the small-cap Russell 2000 slumped 2.4%, its biggest one-day drop since November, and was moving lower again on Monday morning.

Consumer discretionary and retail stocks face a “double whammy,” said Keith Lerner, chief investment officer at Truist Advisory Services.

“Lending rates are moving up and oil prices are moving up, which are two things that are negative ... for the consumer,” Lerner said.

An exchange-traded fund that weighs retail and consumer stocks similarly - ⁠the Invesco S&P 500 equal-weight consumer discretionary ETF - fell 1.3% on Friday, and is down 8% on the year.

Housing stocks were hit hard on Friday, ⁠with the PHLX Housing index dropping 3.3%.

Trump threatens Iran as tensions surge again in Middle East

President Donald Trump threatened renewed war with Iran on Sunday night in his latest ultimatum to the country, which has so far resisted U.S. demands to largely shut down its nuclear program.

Trump said in a social media post that Iran had to move fast “or there won’t be anything left,” adding “the Clock is Ticking.” He did not set a deadline, and over the past two months, Trump has made similar threats to Iran without following through.

Negotiations between the United States and Iran have been stalled for weeks. Trump has repeatedly warned that he could soon order a renewed assault on Iran unless its leaders made concessions in the talks.

Iran has repeatedly rebuffed U.S. terms for a deal to curb uranium enrichment and end attempts to blockade the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for shipping oil and gas. The turmoil over the strait has roiled markets and sent the price of oil soaring.

On Monday, Iran said it had handed yet another counterproposal to the United States in the negotiations. The Iranian Foreign Ministry said the talks were still continuing through Pakistan, which has been mediating between the two sides.

Asked about Trump’s threats, Esmaeil Baghaei, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, told reporters: “Don’t worry, we know very well how to respond.” He did not elaborate further, although Iranian officials have repeatedly threatened fierce retaliation if attacked again by the United

The Pentagon is planning for the possibility that Operation Epic Fury — which was paused when the president declared a ceasefire last month — will pick up again in the coming days. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said he spoke with Trump over the weekend.

“We are closely watching Iran. I will speak today, as I do every few days, with our friend President Trump,” Netanya-

hu said Sunday. “I will certainly hear impressions from his trip to China, perhaps other things as well. Of course there are many possibilities. We are prepared for any scenario.”

Two Middle East officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss operational matters, said last week that the United States and Israel are engaged in intense preparations — the largest since the ceasefire took effect — for the possible resumption of attacks against Iran as early as this week.

The war began in late February with a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran that drew much of the Middle East into the conflict.

Analysts say the United States has faced a tough dilemma since a ceasefire was declared last month. U.S. and Israeli war planes could again start attacking Iran from the air, but many military analysts say bombing alone is unlikely to force Iran to agree to U.S. demands.

The two countries could launch a special forces operation to try to seize Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, which the U.S. and Israel fear could be used to build a nuclear weapon. But such a raid could risk the lives of U.S. soldiers, further straining domestic U.S. support for an unpopular war.

For the past month, Trump has instead opted for a pressure campaign — so far unsuccessful — to force Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States briefly launched what Trump called “Project Freedom” to help escort ships trapped in the waterway to safety. Just a day later, the initiative was suspended to allow for further negotiations with Iran.

Bodies of four Italian divers found in Maldives cave

The bodies of the remaining four Italians who went missing while scuba diving in the Maldives last week have been located in a deep underwater cave, the Maldives National Defense Force said Monday.

Authorities had recovered one body on Thursday, the day the group of five researchers went missing.

The four bodies were “located inside the Vaavu Atoll cave on a joint search and recovery operation,” the Maldives agency said in a statement posted on the social site X. A team of experts sent by the Italian government had joined the mission.

Three highly-trained specialist cave divers found the bodies during a three-hour rescue dive on Monday morning, according to the Divers Alert Network, an international diving safety group involved in the rescue.

The coming days will be “dedicated to

the highly delicate recovery procedures,” the agency said.

The discovery marked the end of a search by an international consortium of rescuers who combed the deep-water formations for signs of the missing divers. One member of the search team — Mohamed Mahdhee, a veteran diver with the Maldives National Defense Force — died Saturday from decompression illness.

The missing divers were part of an expedition of dozens of Italians in the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean known for its crystal clear waters and dive sites. They included Monica Montefalcone, a marine ecologist at the University of Genoa; her daughter Giorgia Sommacal, a biomedical engineering student at the same university; Muriel Oddenino, a research fellow; Federico Gualtieri, a former student of the ecologist; and Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor.

The dive on Thursday, to explore deep-

water reefs and caves, required specialized equipment and was considered “hazardous,” according to the Maldives Defense Force. At least 20 other Italians on the expedition did not go on the dive and were unharmed.

Diving is a backbone of the Maldivian economy, one of the most tourism-dependent in the world. The country has been internationally recognized for its pristine dive sites and its long-standing infrastructure, with a wealth of senior guides and well-established dive schools.

The Italian divers were not tourists, but researchers who had been conducting work in the area over several years, said Mohamed Hussain Shareef, spokesperson for the Maldivian government.

The missing divers failed to surface after descending to explore a network of caves, which were at a depth of around 50 meters, or 164 feet. The recreational diving limit in the Maldives is 30 meters, or around 98 feet. Any-

thing deeper requires specialized equipment.

The Maldives coast guard received a distress call around noon Thursday. One body was discovered that evening at 196 feet — far deeper than the group had planned to go.

Maldivian authorities temporarily suspended search operations after Mahdhee’s death. A group of Finnish divers arrived over the weekend to provide expert advice and perform the deeper, more technical dives, Shareef said at the time. In addition to dive searches, the team was also using two remote-operated vehicles.

The Maldives police said it launched a criminal investigation into what had happened. In a statement, Maldivian authorities said they were looking into whether the trip had adhered to safety protocols, including weather alerts.

The four bodies will be recovered over the next few days in another series of dives, the Maldives National Defense Force said.

Venezuela extradites billionaire tycoon to the US

Ascandal-plagued billionaire tycoon close to Venezuela’s deposed president, Nicolás Maduro, was extradited to the United States over the weekend, Venezuela’s government said.

The extradition of Alex Saab, a Colombian-born businessperson whom U.S. prosecutors have accused of enriching himself through lucrative government contracts, marks an escalation of a purge by Venezuela’s new acting president, Delcy Rodríguez. She is targeting figures who helped keep Maduro in power for more than a decade.

Rodríguez, who was Maduro’s vice president and rose to power with the Trump administration’s blessing after U.S. forces captured Maduro in January, fired Saab from his post as industry minister shortly after Maduro was seized and taken to the United States.

Her government detained Saab in early February at the Trump administration’s request, underscoring Washington’s new

sway over Venezuela.

U.S. prosecutors have claimed that Saab controls some of Maduro’s funds, raising speculation that they could use his extradition to strengthen their case against Maduro. The deposed leader is currently being held in New York, where he has been charged with conspiracies to commit narcoterrorism and import cocaine, along with other counts.

Lawyers representing Saab in Venezuela could not be reached immediately for comment.

This is the second time that Saab, 54, has landed in a U.S. prison. While traveling on business to Iran, a close ally of the Maduro government, he was detained in 2020 in the West African nation of Cape Verde and in 2021 extradited at the request of the U.S. government.

He then spent nearly two years in prison on money-laundering charges. In 2023, President Joe Biden pardoned Saab, who received a hero’s welcome from Maduro on his return to Venezuela in a prisoner swap that included 10 Americans.

U.S. prosecutors have accused Saab of being involved in a scheme in which he and others used shell companies and no-bid contracts to siphon off government money intended to ease a starvation crisis, when the economy crashed a decade ago during Maduro’s rule.

Saab, born in Colombia, moved to Venezuela and became a citizen of both countries. That was thought to have complicated his extradition, since Venezuela’s Constitution prohibits the extradition of citizens.

Still, legal experts have argued that a provision in a 1922 treaty between the United States and Venezuela might allow exceptions. Speculation also quickly emerged in Venezuela on Saturday that Saab may have been stripped of his Venezuelan citizenship to allow the extradition to proceed.

Venezuela’s government limited its declarations on the matter to saying that Saab was a “Colombian citizen who is implicated in committing several crimes in the United States of America, a fact that

is widely known, notorious, and heavily documented in the media.”

Venezuelan authorities did not respond to requests for further comment.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te said Sunday that weapons sales from the United States remained a crucial element for maintaining peace and stability in the region, comments made after President Donald Trump suggested a multibillion dollar weapons deal with the island could be used as a “negotiating chip” with China.

Lai made a point to thank Trump for his support since his first term as president, including “a sustained increased in the scale and value of arms sales to Taiwan, assisting us in strengthening our self-defense

capabilities.” Continued U.S. weapons sales to Taiwan, he said, “remain indispensable and are a vital element for preserving regional peace and stability.”

He also said that “the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait will not be sacrificed or bargained away.”

Lai’s social media post came days after Trump’s remarks appeared to raise new doubts about the reliability of U.S. support for Taiwan. The island has been waiting for Trump to sign off on a $14 billion package of missiles, anti-drone equipment and air defense systems intended to fortify the island against military threats from China, which claims the island democracy as its territory.

Ever since 1979, the year Washington broke off diplomatic ties with Taiwan and shifted recognition to Beijing, Taiwan’s status in U.S. policy has rested on nuanced formulas and carefully chosen words. In 1982, the Reagan administration made a series of commitments to Taiwan, including one about not consulting with China on arms sales to Taiwan, and for decades it has been understood that Washington would not negotiate the subject with Beijing.

Trump appeared to minimize that commitment in remarks to reporters on his way home Friday from a summit with China’s leader, Xi Jinping.

Trump told reporters that he and Xi had talked about the arms sale issue “in great detail” after Xi brought it up.

“So what am I going to do?” he said. “Say ‘I don’t want to talk to you about it’? Because I have an agreement that was signed in 1982? No, we discussed arms sales.”

Asked about Trump’s comments, Jamieson Greer, the U.S. trade representative, said Sunday that past administrations had also paused arms sales to Taiwan, adding on ABC’s “This Week” that the president was considering how to approach the issue of weapons exports.

Greer, appearing on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” also said that there was “no change” in U.S. policy toward Taiwan, seemingly contradicting Trump’s earlier statements.

Alexander Yui, Taiwan’s representative to the United States, said Sunday that Trump needed to hear Taiwan’s side after his discussion with the Chinese leader, emphasizing that Taiwan was on the defensive and not an aggressor.

“We’re not the ones creating all this trouble — those are intruders trying to get into our house,” Yui said on CBS. “The intruder complains that because we’re trying to improve our security system, it’s making his job harder.”

He added, “We believe in peace through strength, so actually it makes more sense for United States to sell us the arms, so we can defend ourselves.”

For Trump, soaring prices test voters’ finances and patience

Swept into power by voters who were frustrated with the nation’s economic trajectory, President Donald Trump promised at his inauguration to “bring prices down.”

But that was January 2025, more than a year before the White House would forge ahead with an agenda that has sent inflation roaring back, testing the patience — and the finances — of a cost-wary American electorate once again.

For Trump, the nation’s political and economic strains are laid bare in a series of dour reports released over the past two weeks. Consumer prices last month rose at their fastest clip in about three years, outpacing workers’ wages, while businesses saw their costs increase at a rate not seen since 2022.

Americans are racking up more debt. Families are saving less. And a key measure of consumer confidence dipped to an all-time low this month. The anxiety has bled into recent political polls, which have registered broad public disapproval of Trump’s handling of the economy.

At the heart of matter is the war with Iran, which sent the average gallon of gasoline to about $4.52 nationally, according to AAA. That is a more than 40% jump from a year ago, an uptick that has cut across the global economy, affecting everything from the cost of workers’ daily commutes to the prices of goods at grocery stores.

Yet the president has largely dismissed those recent signals, telling reporters at one point last week: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation.”

Trump had been asked about the extent to which the economy factored into his plans to end the war, and responded that disarmament was his sole concern. Otherwise, the president has maintained that the U.S. economy is strong and will rebound quickly once the war concludes, precipitating a rapid fall in gas prices in the United States.

Stephen Moore, a conservative economist who has advised Trump, said the recent turbulence was not a “surprise.” But he acknowledged that voters might not be forgiving come November’s midterm election, given that the president promised he would bring down the cost of living.

“Republicans could face a tsunami election in November if inflation continues to stay high,” said Moore, who described gas prices as “the chief gauge people use to determine

how the economy is doing.”

The jump in fuel costs is only the latest blow for American families, who have suffered through years of rising prices, high interest rates and a softening labor market — as well as much longer-running concerns about the affordability of housing, childcare and other essentials.

Add on mounting concerns that the arrival of artificial intelligence could yield mass job losses and Americans have plenty of reason to be worried about their financial wellbeing, said David Tinsley, an economist at the Bank of America Institute.

“It’s one thing after another, and I think that is why people feel so bad,” he said. “It’s quite hard to point to things that people would feel great about, that would inspire a lot of optimism, unless you’re at the top of the income distribution.”

At the start of the year, Trump seemed ready to hit the 2026 campaign trail and claim credit for an economy on the upswing. In some of its earliest forecasts, the White House believed that its agenda, particularly its recent

round of expensive tax cuts, would seed the conditions for higher wages, more jobs and new investments over the coming year, yielding benefits that voters would remember once they arrived at the ballot box.

But then Trump began to bomb Iran in February, which upended the global economy by snarling its energy supply. Far from the boom once envisioned, analysts have since broadly revised their projections, anticipating that sky-high oil will slow growth, worsen unemployment and raise prices, meting out the greatest damage to families that earn the least.

“These are the exact kind of spikes that are going to hit low-income people the hardest, at the exact same time that their incomes are slowing the most,” said Alex Jacquez, chief of policy and advocacy for the Groundwork Collaborative, a progressive group that focuses on cost-of-living issues. “I totally understand why people are really mad right now.”

Jacquez served under President Joe Biden, who strained early in the 2024 election to convince Americans that the economy was good when their gas and grocery bills said otherwise. Stung by the downturn of the COVID-19 pandemic, voters did not accept that argument, and they returned Trump to office.

During the presidential race, Trump promised to bring down inflation and restore a sense of normalcy after years of economic tumult. Once elected, however, he began unleashing chaos of his own making, chiefly through his eye-watering tariffs, which caused import prices to rise. And just as those effects had started to calm, the president commenced a war that drove up the cost of gas, the one product where the price is posted in giant numbers alongside every highway in America.

“They’re the two major decision points of his presidency, and their impact on domestic prices is to unequivocally make them higher,” Jacquez said.

Despite the mounting challenges, the White House has remained bullish about the nation’s economic course. Last Sunday, Kevin Hassett, the director of the White House National Economic Council, mused on Fox News that the nation’s gross domestic product, a measure of its output, could top 6% this year. (Most private forecasters expect the economy to grow at less than half that rate.)

Trump and his aides have also pointed repeatedly to the stock market, which has

posted a series of record trading days during the war, primarily driven by optimism around artificial intelligence. So, too, has the White House found reason for celebration in the labor market, after employers added 115,000 jobs last month, surpassing expectations.

There is little evidence so far that Americans’ anxiety about the economy is causing them to pull back their spending. Retail sales were solid in April, data released Thursday showed, continuing a pattern of resilience that has repeatedly defied forecasters’ predictions of a slowdown.

But that strength is being driven, at least partly, by wealthy households, which have been insulated from economic headwinds by a steadily rising stock market. Lower- and middle-income households are the ones bearing the brunt of slower wage growth and rising prices. Larger tax refunds have helped many families offset higher costs, but that effect is fading.

Taken together, the conditions have left investors convinced that the Federal Reserve is not going to slash interest rates this year, as Trump has vigorously sought. Even after securing a new chair for the central bank — Kevin Warsh, who was confirmed by the Senate on Wednesday — policymakers seem inclined to wait out the current uncertainty before resuming their cuts.

“We think there is a narrow path to being able to get a cut in, but I would say it is very slim,” said Josh Hirt, a senior economist at Vanguard, adding that it “would definitely depend” on a swift unwinding of the war with Iran.

Michael Strain, an economist at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said Trump’s approach to the economy had been baffling, especially coming off the experience of the Biden administration.

“I’ve been struck, even before the Iran war, with the degree to which President Trump is making the same mistakes as President Biden,” Strain said. “We’ve had two presidents in a row who have seen consumer prices going up on their watch, who have dismissed those price increases out of hand as temporary, transitory, not real in some measure.”

Both presidents had also “politically chosen to downplay the importance of price increases in the lives of voters,” Strain added.

“There have been an astonishing number of own goals in the last year and a half,” he said.

Defending champs, 5 other teams sweep into Double-A sectional finals

Six teams completed 3-0 sweeps in their respective Superior Double-A Baseball League sectional semifinal series on Sunday.

The defending champion Mulos of Juncos, along with the Azucareros of Yabucoa, Toritos of Cayey, Gigantes of Carolina, Maratonistas of Coamo and Petateros of Sabana Grande, punched their tickets to the sectional finals.

In the East section, the Mulos eliminated the Cariduros of Fajardo with a 2-1 victory, thanks to a combined pitching effort from Dereck Rodríguez, Francisco López and Kenny Burgos.

Meanwhile, the Guerrilleros of Río Grande avoided a sweep by defeating the Artesanos de Las Piedras 8-6, snapping the Artesanos’ nine-game winning streak. Nelson Gómez and Randy Ventura each drove in two runs for Río Grande.

In the Southeast section, the Azucareros dramatically walked off the Grises of Humacao with a 6-5 victory to complete their sweep. Yabucoa scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, highlighted by a game-winning two-run double from Alexis Rodríguez Sepúlveda.

Elsewhere in the Southeast, the Jueyeros of Maunabo successfully defended their home field once again, taking a 2-1 lead in their series with a 4-1 win over the Leones of Patillas, backed by 8.1 innings pitched by young Luisiel Rivera.

In the Central section, the Toritos prevailed 9-1 to eliminate the Bravos of Cidra, powered by a brilliant relief performance from Juan Berríos and a home run by Iván de Jesús. In the same section, the Criollos of Caguas, powered by home runs from Roberto Peña, Javier Ortiz and Miguel Vega, avoided a sweep by defeating the Pescadores del Plata of Comerío, 8-4, halting Pescadores’ 12-game winning streak.

In the Metro section, the Gigantes eliminated the Lancheros of Cataño with an 8-6 victory, led by three RBIs from Alexis Torres. Meanwhile, the Maceteros of Vega Alta showed signs of life with a commanding 12-0 shutout over the Guardianes of Dorado, backed by the pitching tandem of Loidis Cubano and Rey Pérez. Yordany Salvá hit two home runs, and José Feliciano added another.

In the South section, the Maratonistas scored seven runs in the seventh inning and went on to defeat the Brujos of Guayama 1211 in 10 innings, advancing to the sectional

final. Luis Rodríguez and Fernando Amaro each drove in two runs.

In the same section, the Peces Voladores of Salinas bounced back with a 3-2 victory over the Poetas of Juana Díaz, bolstered by five scoreless innings from Joseph Guzmán and a home run by Joek Rivera.

In the Southwest section, the Petateros secured their spot in the finals by dominating the Piratas of Cabo Rojo 14-7, powered by four RBIs from Jancarlos Aponte. Meanwhile, the Cafeteros of Yauco routed the Petroleros of Peñuelas 13-3, thanks to three RBIs by Odrick Pitre and Mathew Rentas’ 6.1 solid innings on the mound. Yauco now leads the series 2-1.

In the North section, the Arenosos of Camuy responded with a decisive 12-2 victory over the Titanes of Florida, driven by six RBIs from Luis Mateo and six strong innings from Juan Caballero. The Titanes lead the series, 2-1. Additionally, the Tigres of Hatillo took a 2-1 lead in their series by crushing the Atenienses of Manatí 14-4, highlighted by two home runs from Jay Feliciano and 6.2 innings from Rawell Rivera.

In the Northwest, the Libertadores of Hormigueros took a 2-1 lead in their semifinal series by shutting out the Tiburones of Aguadilla, 3-0, thanks to a pitching gem by

Ramón Rodríguez, who tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and allowed just three hits. Kelvin Pérez hit a home run and drove in two runs for Hormigueros.

Game 3 of the Northwest Semifinal A series between the Fundadores of Añasco and the Patrulleros of San Sebastián was suspended due to rain in the first inning -with Añasco leading 1-0 -- at Juan José “Tití” Beníquez Stadium. The game was to resume Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Team Metro wins BSN All-Star Game

Team Metro defeated Team Isla 141-134 in the 2026 Superior National Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) All-Star Game held Sunday night at Arquelio Torres Ramírez Coliseum in San Germán.

Team Metro’s starting lineup consisted of Isaiah Piñeiro (Cangrejeros), Travis Trice (Criollos), Louis King (Criollos), Christian López Santiago (Criollos) and Ysmael Romero (Mets).

Starting for Team Isla were André Curbelo (Atléticos), Rafael Pinzón (Capitanes), Rigoberto Mendoza (Santeros), Nick Perkins (Atléticos) and Montrezl Harrell (Atléticos).

Eddie Casiano, head coach of the Atléticos of San Germán, led Team Isla, while Wilhelmus Caanen, head coach of the Criollos of Caguas, coached Team Metro.

The contest was close early on, with Team Metro closing out the first quarter holding a 42-41 lead.

During the final minutes of the first half, the crowd in attendance was treated to a memorable offensive duel between Ysmael Romero and Montrezl Harrell. By halftime, Team Metro had built a

79-64 advantage.

The entertainment continued during halftime with musical performances by Lenny Tavárez and Justin Quiles.

Team Metro stayed in control throughout the second half, entering the final quarter with a 109-100 lead en route to the seven-point victory.

Romero was named All-Star Game MVP.
