Nonprofit Solo por Hoy strengthens emergency assistance programs

The organization Solo por Hoy, in addition to assisting people who are homeless or in danger of losing their home, as part of its mission has reinforced its programs to provide rapid response assistance to citizens who are left homeless by emergencies such as fires, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes.

“Emergencies are actually our daily bread. That you are homeless is an emergency and our mission is to try to prevent you from sleeping on the street,” said Belinda Hill, founder and executive director of Solo por Hoy. “When this happens due to emergencies such as a fire or a hurricane, we have to be ready to react immediately and we do so, in coordination with government agencies that call us to activate us.”

Hill noted that the group is constantly meeting to update contingency plans in this hurricane season, so that in case a hurricane arrives they will be ready. Internally, Solo por Hoy has its emergency plan that protects personnel trained and certified by the island Emergency Management and Disaster Administration Bureau before, during and after the hurricane.

The equipment includes satellite phones, continuous communication to be clear about when to arrive at work, and even when to be in the office.

“Fires happen several times a year. The most recent were some that we responded to in Cataño and Santa Isabel just a few days ago,” Hill said. “We have responded to fires before in La Perla, in Bayamón and in Carolina. In Cataño

I received the call at five in the morning; they told us the ages of the people affected by the fire who lost everything and at 7 a.m. we brought them two changes of clothes the size of each one, food, snacks, emergency kits with medicines and personal hygiene items. In coordination with the Public Housing Administration, we achieved different alternatives, from a shelter for an older adult, a temporary shelter, to public housing so that all families were under a safe roof that night.”

In the other fire it responded to in Santa Isabel, the group coordinated so that through funds from an emergency program they could pay for hotel rooms for several days until housing was found for the victims.

In the hurricane season, Solo por Hoy fine-tunes its rapid response programs, mostly to better serve families affected by flooding.

Police Assn. calls for protest over undelivered salary hikes

More than 6,000 Puerto Rico police officers say they never received the salary increase announced earlier this month and are now calling for a mass protest this Thursday at 10 a.m. in front of Police Bureau headquarters.

Police Association President Gabriel Hernández said the government’s public celebration of a “substantial” raise on July 15 does not match the reality on the ground. Hernández said only about 40% of officers saw any change in their paychecks -- and for many, the increase amounted to just $8 per pay period.

“Some officers received $16 a month,” Hernández said.

“If that is considered substantial, I don’t want to know what they call poverty.”

The controversy centers on the distribution of the $44 million allocated in the Police Bureau’s budget for salary adjustments. Hernández said $33 million was used to implement the new pay scale, leaving roughly $11 million for the more than 6,000 officers who did not receive any increase on July 15.

He argued that the remaining funds are nowhere near enough to provide meaningful compensation to those left out.

“I said it from the beginning: the money wasn’t enough,” Hernández added. “They turned a deaf ear, and today the numbers prove us right.”

Pavia Hospital employees denounce sanitary crisis related to water system

Employees at Pavía Hospital in Hato Rey are denouncing a severe sanitary crisis after more than a week of black, foul‑smelling waste water reportedly flowing from the facility’s pipes, prompting union leaders to demand the immediate closure of the mental‑health institution, a halt to new admissions and an urgent investigation by the Department of Health.

Desiré López, international representative of the United Auto Workers (UAW) the union that represents hospital employees said staff have been forced to work amid an overpowering stench of feces and contaminated water that emerges whenever faucets are opened. She argued that the conditions make it impossible to safely care for patients who rely entirely on personnel for hygiene and daily support.

López said the situation has already disrupt ed basic patient care. Individuals admitted to the

hospital have gone several days without being able to bathe, while employees fear that exposure to the unidentified wastewater could trigger an infectious outbreak inside the institution.

“No one has certified what is in that black water running through the pipes,” she said, noting that staff are doing “the impossible” to maintain dignity and safety despite the lack of clean water.

The union places full responsibility on the hospital’s administration for keeping the facility open under what it describes as dangerous and un sanitary conditions. López reiterated that the UAW is demanding three immediate actions: closure of the hospital until the issue is resolved, suspension of all new admissions, and a formal investigation by the Department of Health.

“Employees and patients at the Pavía Hospital in Hato Rey deserve safe, sanitary conditions,” López said. “We will not allow the health and lives of our people to be put at risk because of the administra

tion’s inaction.”

The Pavía Hospital administration gave assur ances on Monday that it had attended to the flow of waste water that had come out of the institution’s pipes during the past few days.

In a written statement, the institution in dicated that “in recent days there was a sudden and unforeseen incident in a sector of the pipes of the installation, which generated a temporary alteration in the appearance and smell of the water in that area.”

“As soon as the situation was identified during the week, the corresponding maintenance, engi neering and mitigation protocols were immediately activated,” the hospital said.

A union leader said staff at Pavía Hospital have been forced to work amid an overpowering stench of feces and contaminated water that emerges whenever faucets are opened.

Course on rainwater harvesting system design to be offered

Acourse on designing a system for har vesting rainwater is to be offered by architect Fernando Abruña, FAIA, at a time when the island is facing a potential drought that threatens the water supply.

The course, titled “¡YA!, ¡YA MISMO LLUEVE!: Diseño de Sistemas de Cosecha de Aguas de Lluvia” (It’s Time! Rain Is Coming Now: Rainwater Harvesting System Design) will take place on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 6 p.m. at the headquarters of the Puerto Rico Archi tects and Landscape Architects Association

in San Juan.

Recognized for decades as the “Fa ther of Green Architecture” in Puerto Rico, Abruña will discuss fundamental concepts for designing rainwater harvesting systems to foster water resilience and autonomy in Puerto Rico’s buildings.

The course will include demonstrative calculations and presentations of projects applying the concepts discussed by the expert, who is a professor emeritus at the University of Puerto Rico School of Architecture and the creator of landmark projects such as “La Casa Ausente” in Vega Alta (Puerto Rico’s first eco-

home) and the island’s first public eco-school in Culebra, which is LEED Gold certified. Abruña noted that participants will learn key water conservation strategies during the course. They include conducting a water consumption audit, calculating rainwater harvesting potential based on the installation site, and determining the appropriate size for a rainwater harvesting cistern based on user needs and the specific location.

Besides being a well known conser vationist, Abruña is the architect behind the “Enlace Resiliente” (Resilient Link) house, a sustainable housing prototype designed for

Ratings service Nielsen to leave Puerto Rico market

Nielsen will stop measuring television and radio audiences in Puerto Rico at the end of the year, a move that will leave the island’s broadcast industry without a unified ratings service and disrupt how local advertising is bought and sold.

The decision, first reported by Inside Radio, affects more than 3 million media con sumers and ends Nielsen’s 15-year presence in the Puerto Rico market. In a statement, the company said the change reflects a broader

reassessment of how it allocates resources globally.

“As a global organization, we must continuously evaluate how we deploy our resources across all regions,” a Nielsen repre sentative said, adding that the company intends to work with local stakeholders to ensure an orderly transition, according to the publication.

The exit comes as Nielsen’s Puerto Rico radio client base has sharply contracted. Only five companies currently subscribe to Nielsen Audio, representing less than 20% of radio listening on the island. Under Nielsen’s

Subscriber First policy, listening to non‑sub scribing stations is excluded from the dataset used by major ad‑buying systems leaving nearly 80% of the market without measurable audience data.

Major operators such as Spanish Broad casting System, which runs the influential Z93 network, do not subscribe to Nielsen in Puerto Rico. With no competing radio ratings provider Eastlan Ratings does not measure the market radio broadcasters face the largest measurement gap.

natives. Comscore, iSpot.tv and VideoAmp all offer products that could replace portions of Nielsen’s service, though none currently pro vide a full market‑wide solution comparable to Nielsen’s long-standing currency.

Nielsen said it remains “fully committed” to supporting the industry during the transition, but the departure raises immediate questions for advertisers, agencies and broadcasters who rely on audience data to set rates, negotiate buys and evaluate performance.

The company’s withdrawal underscores ongoing shifts in the measurement landscape as broadcasters and advertisers increasingly adopt big‑data and cross‑platform solutions changes that may now accelerate in Puerto Rico as the market prepares for life after Nielsen.

Gov’t agencies to adopt 2 schools each to assist with physical improvements

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón announced on Monday the expansion of the “Quiero Mi Escuela” (I Love My School) initiative, under which every Puerto Rico government agency will be responsible for adopting two public schools.

“‘Quiero Mi Escuela’ has demonstrated that when the entire government works together, we can achieve concrete results for our students,” the governor said in a written state ment. “We began by assigning one school to each agency, and following that success, each agency will now adopt two schools. We are doubling our efforts because our children, teachers, and school communities deserve school facilities that are safe, clean, and in the best possible condition. My husband and I have also adopted our own schools.”

“This is not limited to preparing a school in the days leading up to the start of classes,” she added. “Agencies listen to school principals and help facilitate solutions throughout the entire school year.”

The initiative began with the goal of ensuring a happy start to the school year by assigning a school to each government agency, fostering direct collaboration with the Department of Education (DE) and the Public Buildings Authority (PBA) to handle cleaning, painting, maintenance, landscaping and

facility preparation before the school year begins.

In many cases, the schools adopted are the ones the officials themselves attended.

Work on facility improvements is continuing, even though the Financial Oversight and Management Board did not approve the $25 million requested for the DE in February. The agencies themselves will cover the costs of getting the schools ready for August.

School bus contractors to Education Dept.: Pay $12.5 million owed by Friday or face protest

School Bus Contractors Federation President José Rosado warned this week that the sector will take to the streets next Monday, Aug. 3 if the island Education Department does not pay the full $12.5 million owed to school transpor tation companies by this Friday.

Rosado issued the ultimatum during a radio interview, in which he criticized the agency’s handling of outstanding payments and cautioned that the lack of disbursements could jeopardize the start of student transportation services scheduled for Aug. 6. He stressed that companies need the full amount to operate safely and reliably at the beginning of the semester.

Rosado also claimed he received information from a “reliable source” alleging that a $9 million allocation intended for payments before July 30 was partially diverted to benefit a single company. According to his account, a “million‑dollar sum” was separated for that firm, leaving others without the funds they are owed.

“From that $9 million allocation, a million‑dollar sum was taken out to pay one company, going against the interests of all the others, and they intended to write off the $12.5

million,” Rosado said.

He argued that such an action would have prevented several companies from operating, effectively sidelining them while favoring one provider.

When asked about the deadline for deciding whether buses would be available for the semester, Rosado said the determination has already been made: if the full payment is not received by Friday, the sector will not deploy its fleet.

Although Education Secretary Eliezer Ramos Parés indicated that $7 million is already being processed, Rosado insisted that an additional $5 million remains outstanding. He also highlighted a separate $2.5 million debt from last year that has yet to show any signs of payment.

“If not, this Monday we will be out on the streets making our case,” he said, adding that the sector is demanding identification of the remain ing $5 million from this year and the $2.5 million from last year.

Rosado noted that if all pending payments are addressed including $2.4 million approved for services rendered between 2021 and 2024 the

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of agencies, municipal ities, school communities, public employees and volunteers, the government has achieved two consecutive school openings characterized by better organization and schools that are ready to welcome their students and teachers.

The expansion will significantly increase the number of schools receiving support and reinforce the shared responsi bility between government agencies and school communities throughout the year. Each agency is responsible for maintaining constant communication with the administration of assigned schools, identifying their priority needs, and collaborating on tasks that can be addressed through resources, work crews, equipment or interagency coordination.

The DE and the PBA, working alongside the agencies, coordinate the selection of schools while taking into account the needs of each educational region; the DE will monitor the work carried out by the agencies.

The governor emphasized that the initiative does not replace the DE’s responsibilities regarding school maintenance and infrastructure; rather, it complements those efforts by mo bilizing resources from across the entire government apparatus.

“Education is everyone’s responsibility,” she said. “Each agency has personnel, expertise, and resources to contribute. With this expansion, we reaffirm that our students are a priority for the entire Government of Puerto Rico.”

industry could “close this chapter” and begin transporting students on Aug. 6 as scheduled.

“Counting on the Department of Education’s payment, our hundreds of students will continue receiving services as usual,” he said.

Rosado also discussed a recent incident involving re cordkeeping related to units from his company, Transporte Rosado, stating that he is increasingly convinced it was orchestrated by competitors using intermediaries. He said the company has already secured duplicates of the affected documents and updated all required records.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón
School Bus Contractors Federation President José Rosado stressed that companies need the full $12.5 million owed them in order to operate safely and reliably at the beginning of the semester.

Democrats reset the Maine Senate race. Now comes the tricky part.

Democrats in Maine have reset a Senate race seen as critical to their party’s chances of retaking the chamber after an improvised scramble to swap out a damaged candidate, Graham Platner, for a new one, Troy Jackson, after a wild 17 days.

Now comes the tricky part.

Jackson, a former state Senate president, is trying to keep alive the grassroots energy that Platner built over the past year while distancing himself from the former nominee’s personal history. With help from her allies, Sen. Susan Collins, the fiveterm Republican he is trying to defeat, is seeking to tie the two Democrats together in ways the GOP hopes will alienate swing voters.

A 100-day contest

This dynamic is beginning to shape a 100day contest that will drench this largely rural state with money and place it at the epicenter of the national fight for Senate control. Democrats have turned to a familiar fixture of state government and a fifth-generation logger from Maine’s north woods to make their case against a far better-funded incumbent who has already defied national headwinds once in the Trump era.

The race will test whether Jackson can leave behind the baggage of a candidate, in Platner, who bowed out after a rape allegation that he denies, revelations about a tattoo that resembled a Nazi symbol and a trail of offensive online posts.

By replacing Platner with Jackson, Maine Democrats hope to make the race less about their candidate and more about painting Collins as a tool of the ultrawealthy and a rubber stamp for President Donald Trump on the most pressing matters.

“Who has she served?” Jackson asked Maine Democrats at the Saturday convention where he was officially selected to be his party’s nominee. “She’s served Donald Trump.”

Collins, in a brief interview before a Saturday parade in Casco, Maine, signaled an intent to portray her new rival as outside the mainstream and in many ways a continuation of the Platner campaign.

“My likely new opponent has adopted exactly the same platform as my old opponent,” she said. “It’s the democratic socialist platform and it’s very similar. So the issues have not changed.”

Jackson’s strategy: Tie Collins to Trump

It is no secret what Jackson plans to do: Tie Collins to Trump, who lost the statewide vote in Maine in each of his three presidential campaigns.

At the Saturday convention where Democrats picked Jackson as their new candidate, speaker after speaker cited Collins’ vote for Brett Kavanaugh, the Trump-nominated Supreme Court justice whom Collins voted to confirm after claiming she received an assurance that he would protect abortion rights.

“She voted with him 96% of the time,” Jackson said of

Collins during his victory remarks Saturday. “She helped deliver enormous tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy on our backs. And she voted to confirm Kavanaugh and Gorsuch, the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade.”

Making that case will require Jackson, whose Senate campaign started with zero money two weeks ago, to raise a lot, and quickly. Collins had $11 million at the end of June, according to her latest campaign finance report. The Senate Republicans’ main super political action committee, which has announced it will spend $42 million in Maine alone, began attacking Jackson minutes after he was named the nominee.

Jackson told reporters after the convention that he had not spoken with Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader whose allies control the Senate Democrats’ main super PAC, and whom Jackson said he would not support to remain in his leadership role. Asked if he has enough money to win the race, Jackson replied: “Not now, but I hope to get it.”

Collins’ approach: Don’t forget about Platner

Collins and her allies are now racing to define a new rival after spending months campaigning against someone else. And while the Democrats onstage on Saturday never once mentioned Platner’s name, Collins and her backers appear determined to make sure nobody forgets it.

“The Graham Platner candidacy,” said Josh Tardy, a cochair of Collins’ campaign, “is the gift that keeps on giving.”

While Jackson and Maine Democrats are making their case against Collins about policy, some of Collins’ allies aimed their first attacks at Jackson on his character, after reports that former legislative colleagues said he could be quick to anger. On Friday night, Trump called Jackson “another lunatic.” The opening advertisement about Jackson from the Senate Republican super PAC said he was “like Graham Platner, but worse.”

It showed the two men campaigning together, their hands tightly clasped.

But Collins also highlighted differences between Platner, who was a first-time candidate, and Jackson, a political veteran.

“Troy, I’ve known for more than 20 years. He is an insider in Augusta, and he’s been there for 24 years, and so that’s a very different persona than what Graham Platner was trying to portray,” Collins said in Casco.

Collins, the Senate appropriations chair, has also spent decades entrenched in government. She has won reelection four times with campaigns that emphasized the federal funding she brings to Maine and positioned her as an independent voice. She said Saturday that she would keep making that case.

“I will be stressing how much seniority matters,” Collins said.

Both sides brace for a tight race

Collins won in 2020 with 51% of the vote against a field splintered by two independent candidates. This time she will face only Jackson in a political environment polls show could be worse for Republicans than it was six years ago.

Limited public polling in Maine has shown a close Senate contest. And both candidates have headwinds of history pushing against them.

Collins will, once again, have to detach her political fortunes from an unpopular president. Jackson is trying to become the first Democrat to win a Maine Senate race since George Mitchell won reelection in 1988. (Sen. Angus King of Maine caucuses with Democrats, but he was elected as an independent.)

For his part, Jackson did not directly answer when he was asked after the convention if he could point to any issue on which he differs from Platner.

“I don’t know about the daylight, the separation, any of that stuff,” he said. “All I know is I’m Troy Jackson, and I care about Maine.”

Man convicted of shoving flaming car into gully, igniting giant wildfire

A44-year-old man was convicted late last week of pushing his flaming car into a gully after it had

gotten stuck, setting off one of California’s largest-ever wildfires.

Judge Kristen Lucena determined after a three-day trial that the man, Ronnie Stout, was guilty of arson for

Firefighters from the Ventura County Fire Department battling the Park Fire near Lomo, Calif., in July 30, 2024. The 2024 fire in Northern California was one of the state’s largest wildfires ever. The man faces a prison sentence of 25 years to life. (Loren Elliott/The New York Times)

igniting the Park fire in July 2024, which burned across 429,603 acres in Northern California — about the size of the city of Houston — and destroyed hundreds of homes and other structures.

No one was killed in the blaze, which was the largest ever to be set intentionally in California and the fourthlargest wildfire of any cause, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire began near Chico, in Butte County, about 150 miles northeast of San Francisco, and burned for two months across several counties before it was fully contained.

Because Stout, who lived in Chico, previously was convicted of two serious felonies, robbery and child molestation, he is subject to California’s “three-strikes” law and faces a minimum of 25 years in prison and could be imprisoned for life. His sentencing is set for October.

His lawyer, Nicole Diamond, said in an email that she disagreed with the judge’s verdict, which she said “does not reflect the evidence presented at trial.”

“As I emphasized during the closing argument, while the fire was undeniably a tragedy for the community, the evidence

3 killed in shooting at Seattle food festival

Achaotic shooting in Seattle’s downtown arts and entertainment venue left three people dead Sunday and four others wounded, including a toddler, authorities said, after at least two people sprayed gunfire during a food festival in the shadow of the Space Needle.

Officers took one suspect into custody, Assistant Chief Tyrone Davis of the Seattle Police Department said at a news conference late Sunday, and they were searching for another that he described as a “young person.”

He said investigators believed that the two suspects had been shooting at each other.

“I’ve never felt so scared in my life,” said Rachel Costa, 49, a visitor from Brazil who was at the festival when the shots rang out. She ran and barricaded herself inside a pavilion with about 20 other people, she said, until authorities

presented at trial did not warrant a conviction” under the arson statute, Diamond said. That statute says a person is guilty when he “willfully and maliciously” causes a fire.

In a statement, the Butte County district attorney’s office said that Stout had been driving toward Chico in his 2007 Toyota Yaris when he slid off the road and the car got stuck on a raised stretch of dirt. He revved the engine and shifted between forward and reverse, which eventually caused a fire under the car, and then angrily pushed it off the ridge into a gully 60 feet below, prosecutors said.

When an arson investigator called him shortly after the fire began, based on witnesses identifying him, Stout asked, “What did I do wrong, bro?”

While prosecutors said in their statement that Stout had intentionally pushed the burning car into the gully, they did not suggest that he had been intent on starting a wildfire.

Diamond had emphasized at trial that only one witness described seeing Stout push the car into the gully, according to the Chico Enterprise-Record, and she offered other possibilities for how the car might have rolled to the bottom.

The Park fire burned six years after the Camp fire tore through Butte County, leveling the town of Paradise and killing 85 people, becoming by far the deadliest wildfire in California’s history.

23 and 56 years old, the department’s statement said.

told them the danger had passed.

Davis said there was no outstanding threat to the community, though he did not rule out the possibility of other suspects. Two guns had been recovered, he said, adding that it was unclear whether the victims had any relation to the suspects.

The shooting happened at Seattle Center, the site of the 1962 World’s Fair, just after 6 p.m. The Seattle Fire Department tried to save two victims, but both were declared dead at the scene. Rescuers also treated five other people, whose injuries ranged from minor to serious.

Four of the victims were taken to Harborview Medical Center, including a 2-year-old who was in stable condition. The other patients were between

A medical center spokesperson said all four patients had suffered gunshot wounds. Later, police said one had died of her injuries, bringing the death toll to three.

Mayor Katie Wilson said in a statement that the incident was “an act of horrific violence.”

Over 350,000 people attend the three-day Bite of Seattle food festival each year, according to its website. Justice Beitzel, 52, was there with friends Sunday evening, she said, when she heard gunshots. The music suddenly stopped, and people ran toward her, ducking and hiding behind trees.

She grabbed her friend and hid behind a picket fence, she said in a phone interview. “We helped console those who were still shaking.”

The Normandie Hotel should be imploded COMMUNITY

Yes, I said it.

The Normandie Hotel should be imploded.

For many Puerto Ricans, those words border on blasphemy. The Normandie is one of San Juan’s most recognizable landmarks. Its iconic art deco design, shaped like the bow of an ocean liner, has welcomed generations of visitors entering Old San Juan. Many of us have stayed there, celebrated there, or simply admired its silhouette along the waterfront. I count myself among those who would rather preserve historic buildings than demolish them. In fact, I have spent years advocating for the restoration of Puerto Rico’s architectural heritage. Once these buildings disappear, they are gone forever.

But after more than 20 years of abandonment, I have reached an uncomfortable conclusion. If Puerto Rico is never going to allow the Normandie to be reborn, then perhaps we should stop pretending that it will. The obstacle is no longer engineering. It isn’t architecture, either. It isn’t even money. The obstacle is that we continue to frame the conversation around one thing: parking.

For years, debate over the Normandie has revolved around where cars will go. Should adjacent public land be used? Should a garage be public or private? Should it be underground? How many spaces are enough? While those

arguments continue, the building continues to decay. Salt air never sleeps, and constantly corrodes steel and concrete, while every hurricane leaves another mark. The longer we postpone a decision, the more likely it becomes that restoration will no longer be economically or structurally feasible. And dare we even mention that this hotel used to run with the same parking area it has today?

What makes this particularly frustrating is that the Normandie’s greatest asset is precisely what makes parking less important. It sits between Old San Juan and Condado, beside the Playa Escambrón, in one of the most walkable locations in Puerto Rico. When I travel to cities such as Boston, Chicago, London, Paris, Copenhagen or New York, I park my car in the same exact location -- nowhere. I don’t spend my vacation wondering where to park because I don’t need to rent a car. I walk, ride public transit, take taxis or rideshares, rent bicycles, and enjoy the city as it was designed to be experienced. Urban hotels around the world succeed because they are part of the city, not because they are surrounded by parking lots. And if San Juan is truly a city, it should be the same here.

Why should the Normandie be any different?

PERSPECTIVES

same transportation options that millions of urban travelers already use elsewhere.

Even the question of employee parking reflects an outdated way of thinking. Instead of spending tens of millions of dollars building parking garages, what if we invested more in wages, transit, cycling infrastructure, or housing nearby?

Puerto de Tierra has enormous potential to become a vibrant residential neighborhood again. If more people lived within walking or cycling distance of their jobs, the city would gain residents instead of more concrete devoted to storing automobiles.

We constantly hear the overused business cliche about «thinking outside the box.» Puerto Rico needs something different. We need to think “outside the car.” That single change in perspective transforms the conversation. Instead of asking, «Where will everyone park?» we should be asking, «How will people move?» Those are fundamentally different questions. One designs cities for automobiles. The other designs cities for human beings.

“If Puerto Rico is never going to allow the Normandie to be reborn, then perhaps we should stop pretending that it will,” contributing columnist Robert Gevinski writes. Most of its guests would arrive from the airport by taxi or rideshare. From there, they would spend their time walking through Old San Juan, visiting museums, restaurants, beaches and historic sites, or using the

The tragedy is that this debate is no longer just about the Normandie. It has become another example of Puerto Rico’s inability to make difficult decisions because every major project eventually becomes a debate over cars. Meanwhile, one of the island’s most recognizable buildings continues to deteriorate while everyone insists they want to save it. I hope someone proves me wrong tomorrow. I hope a restoration plan finally emerges that puts people ahead of parking, preserves this architectural icon, and returns it to the skyline where it belongs. Nothing would make me happier.

But if we are going to spend another decade arguing while the building slowly dies, then let’s stop pretending we’re preserving history. Let’s admit that indecision has already become our decision.

And if that’s truly the future we’ve chosen, then the headline writes itself:

The Normandie Hotel should be imploded.

To sell Homer’s ‘Odyssey,’ publishers, like its hero, get crafty

It’s the climax of the “Odyssey.” Odysseus, back in Ithaca at long last, finds his home swarming with suitors vying for the hand of his wife, Penelope, and for his throne. He needs to overthrow the interlopers and reclaim his rightful place. The question is: How?

In their own way, book publishers are fighting a similar battle.

Public interest in the “Odyssey” surged in the lead-up to the release of director Christopher Nolan’s star-studded adaptation of Homer’s epic last week. So far this year, sales of the “Odyssey” rose by 76 compared with last year, according to Circana BookScan, a book industry sales tracker.

For the publishers putting out any of the dozens of translations of the “Odyssey” currently available, that presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Here’s how a few of them are meeting the moment.

Freshen it up

The most direct way publishers are elevating their translations of the “Odyssey” is by giving them splashy reissues.

Picador is one such publisher. In May, the imprint, which in the United States is a branch of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, released a new edition of Robert Fitzgerald’s 1961 translation of the “Odyssey.” Nolan’s film directly influenced its rerelease strategy.

“We originally planned to publish our deluxe reissue of the ‘Odyssey’ in fall 2025, but moved it to spring 2026 so we could take advantage of the excitement surrounding Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation,” Sheila O’Shea, director of publicity and marketing at Farrar, Straus & Giroux and Picador, said in an email. In addition to calibrating the timing, Picador gave the reissue a glitzy new look, with a vibrant green cover, foil stamping, French flaps and deckled edges.

Picador is not alone in applying a fresh coat of paint to the epic. In June, Penguin Classics reissued Robert Fagles’ 1996 translation in a hardcover wrapped in a colorful jacket featuring figures from the poem.

The release date for Nolan’s movie was serendipitous for Penguin Classics, where plans were already underway to mark both the 30th anniversary of Fagles’ translation and the 80th anniversary of the imprint itself, which launched in 1946 with E.V. Rieu’s translation of the “Odyssey.”

“It was beautiful timing, actually,” Elda Rotor, publisher of Penguin Classics, said in a statement. “As filmgoers anticipated his cinematic interpretation of Homer’s epic, at the same time we were preparing to celebrate the Fagles translation.”

Star power

Instead of reissues, some imprints are harnessing another tool: celebrity.

Although many of the most popular translations of the “Odyssey” are decades old, two recent translations have gained cultural prominence. In 2017, W.W. Norton & Co. published a translation by University of Pennsylvania professor

Copies of several translations of Homer’s “Odyssey” in New York, July 15, 2026. The market for the epic poem is as crowded as a certain Ithacan palace, and publishers have had to get crafty to attract readers to their editions. (Tony Cenicola/ The New York Times)

Emily Wilson. And last year, the University of Chicago Press released a version translated by Bard College professor Daniel Mendelsohn.

Classicists are stereotyped as monkish, spending their time cloistered in the ivory tower of academia, but Wilson and Mendelsohn are surprisingly buzzy media figures. Mendelsohn’s cultural criticism is as acclaimed as his scholarship, and he has written for publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books.

Wilson, who is the first woman to translate the “Odyssey” into English, became a lightning rod for two reasons. First, her provocatively blunt translation ignited a fierce debate about the best way to translate Homer. Second, her work got swept up in the culture wars, as she put it in a recent interview with New York magazine.

“After I published the ‘Odyssey’ translation, it was both celebrated in quite simplistic ways as a work of girl power,” Wilson told New York last month. “It also faced backlash.”

The fact that both translators have garnered a reliable amount of name recognition has, in this moment of “Odyssey” fever, been a boon.

“It may come as no surprise that we are, indeed, pro -

moting Emily Wilson’s translation, but what is more surprising is how much interest is bubbling up spontaneously,” Norton’s chief communications officer, Louise Brockett, said in an email. “There have been Emily Wilson read-alongs; there have been ‘Odyssey’ book clubs.”

Like Wilson, Mendelsohn “has already been a go-to voice for reporters covering the movie who want to know more about the poem and about Homer’s world,” Levi Stahl, marketing director for the University of Chicago Press, said in an email.

In the lead-up to the movie’s release, Mendelsohn published pieces about the “Odyssey” in the Times and The Free Press, and on Friday, he reviewed the movie for The New York Review of Books. To further connect Mendelsohn’s name with the phenomenon, Stahl added, “we’ve been drawing the connection with our social media and direct-toconsumer outreach since the first trailer.”

Emphasize differences

Homer’s verse is considered particularly tricky to translate, and there’s no definitive method for bringing his poems into modern English.

“It is very difficult to capture the tone of the poems, which is elevated (clearly very different from everyday speech), yet can be colloquial and emotional at times and is always vivid and immediate,” Egbert Bakker, a professor of Greek language and literature at Yale University, said in an email. “The ‘Odyssey’ is one of these works of verbal art that transcends translation.”

Each translator takes a different tack. Picador highlights the lyrical flair of Fitzgerald’s translation, which “continues to stand apart because it combines deep scholarship with the instincts of a practicing poet,” O’Shea said.

Norton stresses the briskness of Wilson’s version. “It feels like the ancient Greek: direct, accessible and compelling,” Brockett said. “Wilson’s is one of the first metrical translations in recent memory, offering the English-language reader or listener the same sense of motion and adventure, in iambic pentameter, that the original listener to this epic poem would have perceived in their era, in their meter.”

At the University of Chicago Press, the team is emphasizing Mendelsohn’s fidelity. “Our translation is the most poetic, accurate and faithful to the original, as Daniel Mendelsohn deliberately replicated Homer’s long lines and attended carefully to the poem’s metaphors, tone, level of diction and word choice,” Stahl said.

And Penguin Classics is leaning on its legacy as a classroom staple. “Fagles’ translation remains one of the most widely taught editions of the ‘Odyssey’ in U.S. higher education, continuing to be assigned by hundreds of instructors and reaching thousands of students each year,” Rotor said.

Moviegoers who are just now giving Homer a go might feel overwhelmed by the glut of translations of the “Odyssey” to choose from. But keep in mind, as David Elmer, a professor of Greek literature at Harvard University, puts it: “No translation is perfect, and everyone has their own taste.”

Saudis blame Iran-backed militias based in Iraq for drone attacks

Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted and destroyed several drones launched by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias Monday in the kingdom’s first direct military response to such attacks from Iraq since the U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapsed.

The Saudi Defense Ministry said the drones had targeted petroleum facilities in the Eastern province and Riyadh regions.

“These terrorist attempts were launched from Iraqi territory and executed by Iranian-affiliated terrorist militias,” the ministry said, prompting Saudi officials to demand that Iraq prevent its territory from being used to launch missiles.

The latest episode pulls Saudi Arabia deeper into the expanding regional conflict. It comes after Houthi rebels in Yemen declared a blockade against the kingdom along the Red Sea and the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping routes.

Although Iraqi-based militias have not publicly claimed responsibility for attacks since hostilities resumed this month,

In a satellite image from Copernicus Sentinel-2, smoke rises from an oil facility in Abqaiq, Saudi Arabia, on Monday, July 27, 2026. The Saudi defense ministry said drones launched by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias on Monday had targeted petroleum facilities in the Eastern Province and Riyadh regions. (Copernicus Sentinel-2 via The New York Times)

Gulf states had previously reported intercepting incoming fire from proxy groups during the early phase of the war.

Separately, Houthi rebels said Monday that they had targeted crude oil supplies and transport routes linking Saudi Arabia’s eastern fields to the Red Sea hub of Yanbu using several drones. The Saudi Defense Ministry has not yet addressed that claim.

The Houthis form part of Iran’s broader “Axis of Resistance” alongside Iraqi factions, Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The wider region remained on edge Monday as Jordan and Israel said they had intercepted incoming drones. Israeli officials said two drones had been intercepted near the Jordanian border and that authorities were investigating where they had been launched from.

The fresh strikes follow a two-week stretch during which Iran targeted sites in Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan in response to daily American air raids. Direct strikes have cooled over the past 48 hours, with the Pentagon halting its bombardment after 13 consecutive nights and no new reports of Iranian attacks against neighboring states.

Merz criticizes terrorism laws after deadly Berlin pride attack

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany on Monday called for tougher monitoring of individuals who are security threats, a day after prosecutors said the suspect in Saturday’s terrorist attack near a gay Pride event in Berlin was released from detention in May.

“If we cannot detain such potential offenders, we must do everything we can to restrict their freedom of movement as much as possible,” Merz said at a news conference.

On Sunday, German authorities had also revealed that the suspect had tried to join the Islamic State terrorist group and had previously been sentenced to prison for preparing a serious act of violence.

The suspect was shot and killed by police Sunday.

“It was an attack on our free society,” Merz said. “We will do everything to protect and defend this freedom, this openness and the liberal values of our society.”

The revelations about the suspect have intensified long-standing debates over religious extremism and public safety in Germany, with authorities calling the attack an act of Islamic terrorism. Merz said authorities needed to address how the suspect could have gone “unhindered” to the Pride event.

A woman was killed and 29 other people were injured in the attack. The woman was a Polish citizen, the spokesperson for the Polish Foreign Ministry, Maciej Wewior, said Monday.

On Sunday, prosecutors in Berlin identified the suspect as a 21-year-old German citizen named Abdul B., withholding the surname in keeping with German privacy laws. His full name is Abdul Rahman Toufiq Ballout, according to two people familiar with the investigation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss details about the case.

The prosecutors said the suspect tried to join the Islamic State in May 2025 after traveling to Lebanon, where he had family ties. From there, they said, he had wanted to cross the border into Syria but was arrested in Lebanon and sentenced to three months in prison for offenses including incitement to religious and sectarian conflict.

The suspect returned to Germany in November and was arrested at the airport in Berlin. He was held in pretrial detention until May, when he was sentenced by a juvenile court to a year and 10 months in prison for offenses that included “preparing a serious act of violence endangering the state.”

He had also posted Islamic State propaganda on a social media account in 2024, the prosecutors said.

The sentence was suspended, and Ballout was released and placed under the supervision of

a probation officer. The prosecutors said the court had considered several factors, including that he had served nine months in detention in Germany and Lebanon, that he had largely confessed and had distanced himself from the Islamic State, and that no real threat had materialized.

The prosecutors said they had filed an appeal and requested a longer sentence.

The attacks and the disclosure that the suspect was known to authorities and released just over two months ago have added to calls from some politicians and analysts for Germany to take a tougher approach to terrorism. Those demands have intensified months before important regional elections, with polls showing that far-right parties were poised to make gains, in part over anxieties about rising violence.

The far-right Alternative for Germany party said the Berlin attack demonstrated the government’s failure on security policy because it was overly focused on the wrong targets. “The onesided fixation on right-wing extremism must finally be ended and adjusted to the actual facts,” Martin Hess, the home affairs spokesperson for the party, wrote on social media.

Peter Neumann, a professor of security studies at King’s College London, said Germany had lighter sentences for terrorism-related offenses than other European countries, such as France and Britain, as well as the United States.

The goal is for the person to be reeducated,

giving them a better chance of becoming a contributing member to society. But in this case, he said, that was a mistake, considering how aggressively the suspect had tried to join the Islamic State.

“In terrorism cases, even when suspects are quite young, the protection of the public should be more important than the educational aspect,” Neumann said, adding that the suspect had tried to join the Islamist terrorist group just a year before he was released from detention.

But Frieder Dünkel, a professor emeritus of criminology at the University of Greifswald, defended the system as a largely effective way of dealing with young offenders.

“We see no need to reconsider the system as a whole,” he wrote in an email, and added that officials instead should consider “what went wrong in the individual case.”

Merz said that it was too early to determine the political fallout of the attacks but that he was incredulous that Ballout had not been monitored more carefully.

“I cannot understand how it is that I can track my cellphone anywhere in the world — and even use my cellphone to determine, for example, where my iPad is — yet it is allegedly impossible, or technically impossible, for the security authorities in Germany to determine at any time where individuals posing such a significant threat are located,” he said.

Forced to flee and wait, evacuees wonder if their homes still stand

Arantxa Alcázar stepped into her garden on Thursday when she heard police officers shouting at residents to evacuate their homes in Villa del Prado, a town west of Madrid. The blazes that had been raging in the distant mountains were now sweeping down their street.

“Like a river of fire,” she said.

She fled with her mother, Consuelo Lorza, 88, and her 11-year-old daughter, Sara, to another town, only to have to evacuate again hours later, to a nearby village. The following day, they were forced to flee once more, this time to the town of Villamanta.

“I’ve been sleeping here for three days — if you can call that sleep,” Lorza said Sunday morning. She shared a bunk with her granddaughter, while Alcázar spent the night in her car with the family dog. They eventually found out that Alcázar’s home had been spared.

More than 200 people were staying on makeshift bunks inside a sports hall in Villamanta on Sunday, anxiously waiting to learn whether they would be allowed to return home or whether the flames were advancing toward them. Some tried to nap after lunch while children kicked a

football around.

In total, around 90,000 people in central Spain had been evacuated from their homes or ordered to take shelter as firefighters battled what Isabel Díaz Ayuso, the Madrid region’s

president, described as “the worst wildfire” in the region’s history.

Lorza had just been comforted by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, who visited the sports hall to show their support. “The queen told me she couldn’t believe it. Evacuated three times!” Lorza said.

Felipe said on Sunday that the wildfires in Madrid and the neighboring Toledo and Ávila regions remained active but that there were some “positive signs” in the fight against the blazes.

In the Madrid region, fire had destroyed 43 homes and severely damaged more than 300 others, Díaz Ayuso said. “That number will rise enormously, as we have never seen before,” she said, tears welling in her eyes.

Across central Spain, 77,000 hectares — about 190,000 acres — have burned, the country’s public broadcaster reported.

Some evacuees in Villamanta complained that they had received little information about the status of the fires. They waited nervously near their cars, eating churros.

“We watch the fires every minute” through security camera feeds, said Carmen Bautista, 53, who had slept, along with her husband, in their van beside the sports center. They had watched the flames approach their home in Caravan Gar-

In Greenland, ‘no seal, no life’

Anganni Mikaelsen was cruising past icebergs in his boat when he spotted a glistening head pop up in the water. Pow!

His rifle shattered the tranquility.

Mikaelsen was hunting seals, as Greenlanders have for centuries. People here eat seals, feed them to sled dogs and wear sealskins.

They trade the pelts for money and use the bones for jewelry. It’s the animal that has provided sustenance for centuries in an environment where it’s very difficult to survive. There’s no overstating the centrality of seals to Greenland.

International groups have campaigned against seal hunting for years, calling it cruel. Some countries, including the United States, ban seal products, though others carve out exemptions for items produced by Indigenous hunters.

In Greenland, the sealskin trade is a major enterprise, providing income for thousands of Inuit hunters. After they butcher seals, they sell the skins. It’s then a long process to turn them into clothing.

First, the fat is removed with rollers. Then, the skins are washed with soap. Then, they sit in tubs of fresh water to get out all the salt and blood. Then, more cleaning, dyeing and cutting.

The Great Greenland tannery in Qaqortoq, in southern Greenland, looks like a giant dry cleaner’s and smells briny like the ocean. The company does a

den, a nearby development, but it was now safe. Bautista lamented that residents had endured one natural disaster after another — the pandemic, then the deadly floods that swept away three bridges — and that each one seemed worse than the last.

“With the previous catastrophes, you could stay at home. Now …” she broke off, spreading her arms in resignation.

While firefighters struggled to bring the blazes under control, some residents took matters into their own hands. In the mountains around Robledo de Chavela, where the flames had torn through pine forests and holm oaks, several residents on Saturday slipped past police roadblocks to fight the fires.

“We may be doing something slightly illegal, but we have saved this part of the mountain,” Javier Quijada, 30, said on a video call. Quijada and dozens of other residents, all members of the local hunting association, had been fighting the flames with hoses, shovels and even green branches they used to try to smother the fire. He said police officers eventually waved them through, warning them to be careful.

“This is our mountain. Our lives are going up in flames,” Quijada said. “I’ve lost count of how many tears I’ve shed since the fire began.”

brisk business in sealskin pelts, hats, mittens and earrings, as well as fancy jackets that cost more than $1,000.

Walking around Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, you can see sealskin clothes in the shops and sealskin exhibits in the national museum. There are even statues carved in homage to seals.

“No seal, no life,” said Frederick Willie, a Greenlandic schoolteacher.

Mikaelsen seemed vaguely aware of the criticism of seal hunting, but said outsiders didn’t understand how important it was to Greenland. He and his family live off seals, he said. In his town, Kulusuk, it’s not unusual to see a whole family waiting in the harbor to haul in the catch and wash the skins.

As he puttered away in his boat, leaving behind a swirl of fresh blood, he sang to himself.

“This will last us five or six days,” he said. Then he smiled. “And it will be good eating.”

The Prodigiosas of Sabana Grande became champions of the Women’s Premier Softball League (LPSF by its initials in Spanish) on Sunday by defeating the Valencianas of Juncos 3-2 in Game 7 at Felipe Díaz Park.

Sabana Grande claimed the title in just their second appearance in the league finals. The franchise arrived in Sabana Grande in 2023 after relocating from Villalba; that same year, they finished as runners-up, falling to the Caribeñas of Salinas.

The victory also marked the second managerial title for Normagelie Vázquez, who previously won the championship in 2016 while leading the Jueyeras of

Maunabo.

The Prodigiosas struck in the first inning when Makayla Nieves singled in Colby McClinton to open the scoring. In posting the game’s initial run in its column, Sabana Grande continued a series trend: the team that scored first won every one of the seven games.

In the fourth inning, the Prodigiosas extended their lead to 3-0 when Julianna Nieves singled to drive in Luz Feliciano and Morgan Smith.

The Valencianas got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Hailey Guerrero singled in Tatianna Román, and pulled to within a run in the seventh when Nayeli Hernández scored on a defensive error. The rally ended there as the Prodigiosas held on

for the victory.

Smith turned in another strong pitching performance, working all seven innings. She allowed five hits and two runs (one earned), and struck out eight batters for the win.

The former All-American import from Phoenix was named the Crown Series MVP after playing a key role in all four of Sabana Grande’s victories during the series.

The loss went to Venezuelan pitcher Alondra Pérez, who started for the Valencianas and pitched one and one-third innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out two.

Following the game, LPSF General Manager Jeanc M. Rodríguez Martínez presented the championship trophy to Prodigiosas co-owner Melissa Zapata.

Sabana Grande downs Juncos to win women’s softball title Caguas thumps Bayamón to even BSN Conference A Finals series

Louis King (23) scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Criollos of Caguas beat the Vaqueros of Bayamón and even the National Superior Basketball Conference A Finals at 1-1.

The Criollos of Caguas defeated the Vaqueros of Bayamón 88-69 on Sunday night at Roger Mendoza Coliseum in Caguas to even their best-of-seven National Superior Basketball (BSN by its initials in Spanish) Conference A Finals at a game apiece.

After the Vaqueros jumped out to a 27-20 first-quarter lead, Caguas rallied in the second period for a three-point halftime lead and then effectively put the game away with a big third quarter.

As a team, the Criollos shot 45.3% from the field and connected on 15 of 37 attempts from the perimeter. The Vaqueros shot 40.3%

overall and converted only eight of 25 attempts from long range.

Travis Trice led the Criollos with 26 points (four three-pointers) and seven assists, while Louis King had 24 points and nine rebounds.

Jassel Pérez led the Vaqueros with 15 points and five rebounds, and Damian Jones contributed 13 points.

Puerto Rico tops Venezuela in 5 sets for 2nd victory at CAC Games

Puerto Rico once again demonstrated its competitive mettle by prevailing over Venezuela in a five-set duel on Sunday at the XXV Central American and Caribbean Games Santo Domingo 2026.

With the 3-2 win (26-24, 31-33, 29-27, 2325, 15-10), the Puerto Rican squad (2-0) became the only undefeated team in Group A of the men’s volleyball tournament.

“I am very happy with my group; they deserved the victory,” head coach Jamille Torres said. “We were a bit careless with our serves; we could have finished the match earlier, but we were playing against a very strong, gritty Venezuelan team -- they have my respect. Now,

we’ll look to secure a spot in the semifinals in our next match.”

The two teams traded the lead in a match that lasted over two hours. Puerto Rico eked out a win in the first set, but Venezuela responded with a marathon 33-31 victory in the second set -- a frame marked by repeated ties, lead changes and errors from the service line.

The third set was another close battle. Venezuela rallied from a 19-21 deficit to tie the score at 21, but Puerto Rico executed with greater precision during critical moments to pull out another two-point win. The Venezuelans evened the contest again by winning the fourth set, again by two points, sending the match to a tie-breaker.

In the fifth set, Puerto Rico took control from

the opening points, using a focused offensive attack to seal a five-point victory and maintain their perfect record in the preliminary round.

Puerto Rico prevailed in attacks (69-65) and blocks (15-11), while Venezuela held the edge in service aces (7-4). Both teams finished with 36 unforced errors.

Jair Santiago led Puerto Rico on offense with 26 points (21 attacks, five blocks). Klistan Lawrence contributed 21 points (18 attacks, two blocks and an ace). Pelegrín Vargas added 16 points, followed by Ismael Alomar (12) and Eliel Salva (10).

Jesús Gómez was the top scorer for Venezuela with 25 points, while Emerson Rodríguez added 16 points, Paul Viloria 11, and Gabriel Miguel Álvarez 10.
