Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA)
Executive President Luis González Delgado announced on Monday that 28,872 customers in the Metropolitan Region have regained potable water service following operational issues.
“These efforts have allowed us to restore service to more than 28,000 customers, and we remain focused on completing the system’s recovery,” González Delgado said in a written statement.
According to PRASA, 40,000 customers were initially affected by service interruptions. At the time of the report, some 11,218 customers remained without potable water.
One of the incidents occurred at the Enrique Ortega La Plata Filtration Plant, where electrical problems in a control panel caused two of the system’s pumps to go offline.
PRASA indicated that the situation reduced the plant’s operational capacity and caused the only active pump at the Finca Rosso 1 Pumping Station in Guaynabo to shut down.

On Saturday night, around 10:15 p.m., the technical team managed to restore operations at Finca Rosso 1, allowing service to be restored in various sectors of Guaynabo.
The Finca Rosso 1 station is currently undergoing reconstruction following an incident last August, when a power fluctuation caused a sudden spike in system pressure and severe damage to facilities and equipment.

Separately, PRASA is investigating the causes of a drop in water production within the Superaqueduct system. Operational personnel are conducting inspections and site visits to check interconnections and conditions affecting production and distribution. González Delgado said he is in communication with mayors, legislators and elected officials from the potentially affected areas to coordinate mitigation measures, including the hauling and distribution of potable water to communities in need.
PRASA said it would continue providing updates via official platforms and urged customers in the affected areas to use potable water sparingly during recovery operations.

The island House of Representatives was expected on Monday to approve a bill sought by San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero that would streamline the process for private investors to acquire properties classified as public nuisances, provided they certify that the buildings will be restored for affordable or middle-income housing.
House Bill 1005 would amend the Municipal Code by removing the existing one-year delay before an investor may buy a nuisance property that has already been expropriated. The proposal would permit a faster transfer if the purchaser certifies that the property will serve as housing for low-, moderate- or middle-income people or families.
Under the bill, each municipality establishes its own standards through local ordinances, such as market-
based pricing and income limits for those eligible to buy rehabilitated properties. Municipal governments would also have to create protections to ensure the homes are used as primary residences by qualifying households.
The Department of Housing was the sole agency to object to the proposal. Earlier this year, former Housing Secretary Ciary Pérez Peña said the bill would weaken current Municipal Code safeguards intended to curb real estate speculation, property accumulation, and improper use of expropriation authority.
Housing officials also warned that the bill could favor investors with greater financial resources at the expense of individual buyers and might allow rehabilitated properties to be turned into short-term rentals or other commercial ventures. They also cautioned that allowing each municipality to set its own rules could create inconsistent standards across Puerto Rico.

San Juan Mayor Miguel Romero Lugo announced Monday that the municipality has obtained a court-approved stipulation granting it, for the first time, direct participation in the operational decision-making and evaluation processes of the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) for the metropolitan region’s potable water system.
The ruling, issued as part of a lawsuit filed by the municipality, requires PRASA to open access to internal information, monitoring tools, and operational data, and to integrate San Juan’s technical representatives into the committees that oversee system stabilization.
Romero said the agreement marks a turning point after months of water interruptions affecting thousands of residents.

previously led PRASA’s metropolitan regional operations -- will serve as San Juan’s official representative on the newly created Committee for the Stabilization and Restoration of Water Service. The committee will include technical personnel from both the municipality and PRASA and will be responsible for identifying the causes of service failures, coordinating corrective actions, and monitoring system performance.
The agreements also grant San Juan access to PRASA’s GIS, SCADA, and AAA Metro platforms, as well as operational reports, tank-level data, pumping histories, valve-operation logs dating back to June 2025, and other technical information needed to conduct independent analyses. PRASA must also immediately notify the municipality of any valve adjustments, including who performed them and when.
Superaqueduct. The committee will also have authority to recommend and implement manual valve adjustments when necessary, with PRASA obligated to comply in good faith.
The agreement further establishes permanent mechanisms for information exchange between the two entities and requires PRASA to continue supplying water via tanker trucks to affected communities until the joint technical committee determines the system has stabilized.
Additionally, the process will begin to reimburse the municipality for extraordinary expenses incurred during the emergency -- costs that already exceed $621,000.
The court will retain jurisdiction to ensure compliance with all terms.
Romero emphasized that while the agreements represent “an important first step,” the municipality will continue pressing for long-term solutions.
“Sanjuaneros deserve clear information, transparency, and answers,” he said. “We will continue defending their interests and using every tool available to achieve permanent solutions to this crisis.”
Under the stipulation, engineer Roberto W. Martínez Toledo -- who
“Our residents faced a crisis that impacted their quality of life, and the Municipality assumed the responsibility of providing direct support,” he said. “But to solve the problem, we needed access to information, access to the systems, and the participation of professionals with the necessary experience.”
Municipal experts will participate in inspections of critical valves and infrastructure, including filtration plants, dams, and major components such as Carraízo, La Plata, Los Filtros, and the
The first meeting of the new stabilization committee is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. at San Juan’s Municipal Office of Emergency Management, where joint technical work between the municipality and PRASA will formally begin.

Several communities in Loíza had been without running water for 13 consecutive days as of Monday, prompting Mayor Julia Nazario Fuentes to publicly criticize the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) and warn that the municipality may join San Juan and Bayamón in legal action over the prolonged service failures.
The affected sectors -- Torrecilla, Piñones, El Indio and Terraplén -- have relied on limited emergency support while waiting for PRASA to restore service. Although some municipalities have received assistance from the Puerto Rico National Guard, Nazario said Loíza continues to face severe shortages that have pushed residents to the brink.
“People are tired -- truly tired -- of paying for a vital service they’re not receiving,”
Nazario said.
The mayor questioned reports that a court case involving San Juan and Bayamón had paused due to a potential agreement with PRASA.
“You can’t sign agreements that leave out other municipalities that are also affected,” she said. “What is the agreement? That you’ll give water on certain days? And where does that leave us?”
Nazario added that while she sees “a lot of action” in San Juan and Bayamón, Loíza’s needs are being overlooked.
“Loíza exists, and many families have been impacted,” she said.
The mayor also criticized PRASA’s regional leadership, noting that the director for the San Juan area is reportedly on vacation amid the crisis. She called for a coordinated meeting where all affected municipalities are represented to ensure equitable planning
and distribution of resources.
PRASA Executive President Luis González Delgado acknowledged the service gaps and said the agency is working to stabilize supply in Piñones, Torrecilla Alta and other impacted areas. He attributed the outages to insufficient water availability in the San Juan system.
“They are at the tail end of the system,” González Delgado said. “They are the first to lose water and the last to receive it. We know they’re on the map, and we’re working continuously -- not only making the necessary adjustments so our people in Piñones have water, but also providing resources through tanker trucks in the meantime.”
The water crisis has intensified public frustration across the metropolitan region, with some lawmakers and mayors demanding structural reforms and long-term investment to prevent recurring shortages.

Puerto Rico has reached its lowest child poverty rate in more than 30 years, dropping from 58% in 2022 to 52% in 2024, according to the 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book.
“Reaching the lowest child poverty rate in over 30 years is good news for Puerto Rico and a clear sign that addressing this challenge is possible,” said Sarah Vázquez Pérez, executive director of the Youth Development Institute (Instituto del Desarrollo de la Juventud), in a written statement. “We now have the opportunity to sustain this momentum and take it even further.”
The report, published by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and presented in Puerto Rico by the Youth Development Institute, states that 248,000 children and young people on the island still live below the poverty line.
Vázquez Pérez maintained that there are concrete solutions to strengthen family economic security, expand access to early education, eliminate barriers to employment, and create real pathways for economic mobility.
Among the findings, the report notes that

the median income for families with children in Puerto Rico is $28,542.
That figure is nearly $45,000 lower than that of Mississippi, the jurisdiction with the second-lowest median income among families with children.
Study data also show that 11% of young people aged 16 to 19 in Puerto Rico are neither in school nor employed, placing the island in the second-worst position among U.S. jurisdictions.
Regarding early education, 43% of children
ages 3 and 4 are not enrolled in preschool.
Another indicator identified was an increase to 39% in the number of grandparents living with grandchildren under the age of 18 and acting as their primary caregivers -an increase of 5 percentage points from the previous year. Regarding health, Puerto Rico maintains a low rate of minors without medical coverage, with 98% of children covered by health insurance.
“The data allow us to move from diagnosis to action,” said Enid Rosario Ramos, a research
associate at the Youth Development Institute. “They provide the information we need to understand where we stand and monitor progress.”
Rosario Ramos noted that the reduction in child poverty demonstrates that change is possible, but it requires identifying which support systems are reaching families, where gaps persist, and how public policy can respond more effectively.
Among its recommendations, the Institute proposed ensuring access to early childhood development programs and preschool education, expanding after-school opportunities, implementing support models for students and families, creating education-to-employment pathways, and using data to guide public investment.
The Ten-Year Plan established by Law 84 of 2021 outlines goals and strategies to reduce child poverty through policies addressing education, economic security, employment, human capital, health, and food security.
In its 37th edition, the KIDS COUNT Data Book provides data to identify progress, areas requiring additional support, and strategies to improve the well-being of children, youth and families.

The Legal Aid Society of Puerto Rico (SAL by its acronym in Spanish) has asked the Office of the Inspector General to investigate how sworn statements from witnesses in an active criminal case were allegedly leaked to a journalist and discussed publicly on a YouTube podcast.
The SAL represents Anthonieshka Avilés Cabrera, who faces criminal charges in the Aibonito Judicial Region. Her mother, Elvia Cabrera Rivera, is being tried separately before a jury, while Avilés Cabrera’s case remains in the discovery stage. They are both charged with the first-degree murder last summer of Gabriela Nicole Pratts Rosario in a stabbing incident that took place when Avilés Cabrera was a minor.
According to the SAL, the controversy began after the May 8 episode of the podcast Voz y Justicia PR, featuring journalist Sylvia Hernández and notary attorney Chantal M. Delgado Baerga. During the program, Hernández repeatedly stated she possessed sworn statements from several witnesses who did not testify at the preliminary hearing. Delgado Baerga further confirmed that a document Hernández displayed on screen was the sworn statement of a witness who had not taken the stand.
The SAL emphasized that, at the time of the podcast, prosecutors had not withdrawn those witnesses and that only the Puerto Rico Department of Justice should have had lawful access to their sworn statements.
“If it is correct that Ms. Hernández had in her possession sworn statements from witnesses who have not yet testified in open court, this irregularity could constitute a violation of our client’s constitutional rights, including the presumption of innocence, due process, and the right to an impartial jury,” the organization stated.
In response, the SAL submitted a formal request for an investigation to Inspector General Ivelisse Torres Rivera. The organization asked the office to determine whether individuals outside the prosecution team had access to confidential witness statements and, if so, how the breach occurred. The SAL also provided a copy of the podcast episode as part of its referral.
The SAL noted that its request is grounded not only in constitutional protections but also in statutory and regulatory provisions governing the handling of prosecutorial case files.
“With this action, the Legal Aid Society fulfills its mission to vigorously defend people of limited economic resources who face criminal allegations from the State,” the organization said.

Apolitical activist and a Vietnam veteran represented by an anti-corruption organization filed a lawsuit during the weekend challenging what it called the “night of cage fights” that President Donald Trump planned to hold at the White House as part of the celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary.
The case was filed just over a week before the event, which is scheduled for June 14 and is being organized by the mixed-martial arts promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship. The White House has been overshadowed in recent weeks by the construction of the venue for the fights, which includes a 600-ton steel arch on the South Lawn.
The lawsuit argues that the transformation of the grounds was never authorized by Congress, and that the event will serve as an extraordinary use of government space to benefit both the CEO of UFC, Dana White, and Trump, who is an investor in UFC’s parent company.
“The president is giving White and his company what none have enjoyed before: unfettered access to the White House and Lincoln Memorial to stage a private, for-profit sports event, with all the promotional and branding opportunities that accompany such access,” the lawsuit says. The Lincoln Memorial is scheduled to host ceremonial weigh-ins for fighters before the event.
The UFC did not immediately return a message seeking comment Sunday. A statement emailed by the White House called the suit “obstructionist” and without merit, adding that the event was “no different” than various other White House-hosted events.
Beyond the procedural claims that the lawsuit skipped an environmental review and took over federal spaces for

The arch of the Ultimate Fighting Championship arena under construction rises above the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, June 1, 2026. A political activist and a Vietnam veteran, represented by an anti-corruption organization, filed a lawsuit on Saturday, June 6, 2026, challenging what it called the “night of cage fights” that President Trump planned to hold at the White House as part of the celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary. (Allison Robbert/The New York Times)
an event without the approval of Congress, the case focuses heavily on questions of improper financial gains.
It cites reporting that UFC was selling premium tickets to the event for more than $1 million, and the fees that Paramount Skydance, the media company owned by two other executives with ties to the president, Larry and David Ellison, will collect for streaming the event. The suit also notes that Trump purchased between $15,000 and $50,000 worth of
stock in TKO Holding Group, the parent company of UFC, in March — while he was in the process of promoting the event.
Although White and UFC have billed the event as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations, the fight is being held almost three weeks before Independence Day, on Trump’s 80th birthday.
“The event is neither ‘for the celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence’ nor, crucially, being ‘planned, organized and executed’ by the federal government,” according to the suit.
As in other cases challenging abrupt changes Trump has made to Washington, such as his plans to build a 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery, the suit says the event will cause an “aesthetic injury.” Beyond the South Lawn and the Lincoln Memorial, the fighters in the event are also expected to “make prefight walkouts” from the Oval Office, according to the lawsuit.
The plaintiffs in the case are Susan Douglas, a retiree and political organizer, and Paul Romano, a Vietnam War veteran. They each argue in the lawsuit that they frequent the area and were offended by the spectacle being held outside national monuments. The Public Integrity Project, a nonprofit group focused on good governance and public corruption, is representing them.
The case was assigned Sunday to Judge Amit P. Mehta, an appointee of former President Barack Obama in U.S. District Court in Washington who will face the early question of whether the plaintiffs face direct harms because of the event in such a way that they can sue.
The UFC event was scheduled to take place a year after Trump staged a military parade in Washington to mark the 250th anniversary of the Army, which also coincided with his birthday.

Nithya Raman, a progressive member of the Los Angeles City Council, pulled ahead of reality TV star Spencer Pratt in the Los Angeles mayoral primary Sunday, as a surge in the vote count signaled a potential shift in the race for second place.
Five days after the election deadline, it remained officially undetermined who will face Mayor Karen Bass, the incumbent, in the November contest to decide who will lead the nation’s second most populous city. The Associated Press, which estimates that about 80% of the vote has been counted, has not determined a winner.
But late returns have trended heavily in favor of the liberals who make up an overwhelming majority of the city’s electorate. Bass, 72, a former Democratic member of Congress who has already advanced to the November runoff, remained in the lead with 34.68% of the vote, according to the updated
tally released by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/ County Clerk’s office.
Raman, 44, who has steadily gained ground as the count has progressed, had 27.12%, enough to overtake Pratt by a little more than 3,000 votes. He had been running in second place since election night.
A resident of Pacific Palisades who lost his home in the fire and channeled the fury of his neighbors, Pratt, 42, a Republican, dropped to third place with 26.69% of the vote.
A Los Angeles mayoral candidate can win outright by receiving a majority of votes in the primary. Otherwise, the top two finishers regardless of party advance to a November runoff in the nonpartisan race.
Los Angeles residents vote by mail in large numbers, and ballot counting is a slow process, with leads often shifting as the tally drags on for days or even weeks. Mail-in ballots with an Election Day postmark are accepted by county election officials through June 9.
On Sunday, Raman said in a statement that “we are encouraged by the latest vote count and remain grateful to the thousands of Angelenos who have powered this campaign.”
Pratt did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On social media shortly after the update, however, Pratt suggested, without providing evidence, that fraudulent votes from homeless people might have affected Raman’s total.
Alex Stack, a campaign spokesperson for Bass, signaled the likely points of contention between the two if Raman ultimately takes the second slot on the ballot. Though her support has been eroded by the wildfires and general voter angst in the city, Bass has largely maintained the support of the center-left establishment in the city while Raman has been backed by a younger and more progressive base.
“We look forward to winning a contest against an opponent who allows encampments near schools and fights against hiring more cops,” Stack said in a statement, “yet is MIA on saving Hollywood jobs and fighting back when ICE invades LA.”

President Donald Trump, who campaigned on a central promise to keep the United States out of overseas wars, denied in an interview aired Sunday that he’d ever made the pledge.
“I didn’t guarantee no war,” Trump said in a lengthy interview with Kristen Welker, the host of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” taped during his trip to Wisconsin on Friday. “Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?”
Speaking about the U.S.-Israeli war in Iran, he continued: “So when you say I promised, I didn’t promise anything. I don’t like these endless wars. This is not an endless war. We’ve been doing this for three months.”
He did promise. As a candidate in 2024, Trump repeatedly pledged not to involve the United States in war, including on the night he won the election. “They said, ‘He will start a war,’” Trump said during his victory speech. “I’m not going to start a war. I’m going to stop wars.”
During the NBC interview, the president also defended a proposed fund to compensate his supporters who feel they’ve been unfairly prosecuted.
Trump’s attorneys have said in court in recent days that the fund is not moving forward, but the president has continued to raise the idea of compensation for people who claim to be victims of federal overreach.
“If they get it approved, that’s great,” Trump said, an apparent reference to congressional Republicans, who have

proposed White House ballroom.
In the interview, Trump repeated the promise he has made in recent days: “It’s all coming down as soon as the war’s over,” he said, referring to rising fuel costs.
But Trump again gave vague answers when Welker pressed him about the status of negotiations to end the war in Iran, and he offered praise to Iranian negotiators as “more rational” and “very smart.”
And though Trump has repeatedly said that the conflict was nearly complete, he did not commit to pulling some of the 50,000 troops deployed to the Middle East.
“It costs us very little to keep them there,” Trump said. “I would say it would be foolhardy to do that because maybe we may use them. It’s unlikely. But I think we’ll keep them there until such time as we have a completion.”
balked at the idea but have also declined to introduce legislation banning the creation of the pot of taxpayer money.
“If they don’t get it approved, I’d be disappointed.”
Trump eventually ended the wideranging interview after being repeatedly pressed by Welker about claiming, without evidence, that recent elections in California were rigged.
Trump, who is now more than three months into a war with Iran that he

began without congressional approval, is facing growing pressure to end the costly conflict. In recent weeks, voters have voiced frustration over rising fuel costs along with the overall price tag of the war, which grew to around $29 billion in May.
Trump has lately also faced more scrutiny for his intense focus on his various Washington construction projects, including his request for congressional approval of $1 billion in funding for his
The president also did not say how the United States plans to remove highly enriched uranium from heavily secured underground bunkers, as Trump has said he would do to prevent Iran from using the material to build a nuclear bomb. He suggested that if no deal was reached with Iran to end the war, the U.S. military would continue fighting and then would go in for the uranium.
Trump expressed frustration that he had been criticized for not bringing an end to the conflict, and pointed out that the Vietnam War lasted much longer.
“Listen, Kristen,” Trump said, “we’re there for a few months. And the threat is largely over. Soon, it will be over.”

Of all the reactions to Pope Leo XIV’s manifesto on artificial intelligence, from its liberal humanist appreciators to its digital-consciousness-believing critics, one of the most notable is the disappointment of the AI skeptics who think the pope didn’t go nearly far enough.
Writing in Compact magazine, Princeton University’s Greg Conti responds to the pope’s description of the perils of the age of artificial intelligence by asking, “Must we have such an age declared already?” Could a pope not, instead, call for “an age of resistance to AI?” In The Hedgehog Review, cultural critic Anton Barba-Kay comments that approaching AI as a “valuable tool that requires vigilance,” in Leo’s words, is like saying that “cocaine can be a valuable drug that should be snorted with a pinch of salt.”
My own reaction to the papal intervention had something in common with these critics. I thought Leo could have gone deeper into the sheer strangeness of artificial intelligence, the nature of its challenge to human exceptionalism, the reason it breeds so many messianic impulses and apocalyptic fears.
But I do not think a papal call for massive resistance to an AI epoch would have been suited to the conditions of 2026. It seems both too late and too early for that message.

Too late, in the sense that the technology has swept through too much of society already, building too much wealth and infrastructure, promising too many near-term benefits and implicating too many institutions for anyone to imagine that the AI revolution can be (as Conti suggests) “extirpated or repressed.”
Then too early, in the sense that the nature of humans is to react against a technology only once its harms become undeniable; we respond best to dangers made manifest, not threats hypothesized. The regulations that tamed industrialization were fitted to the abuses of the age; the movements to restrain nuclear proliferation would have looked very different absent the object lesson of Hiroshima and Nagasaki; the recent backlash against smartphone use by kids couldn’t have been ginned up in 2010.
No doubt in an ideal world, the response would precede the bitter lesson. But in this world, for the humanist skeptic of AI no less than Skynet-fearing safety-ist, some version of the Bad Thing probably needs to be not just visible but undeniable before the world will act.
And if the humanist is Christian, like the pope, they have good reason to trust that God will allow us whatever time is necessary to tame and regulate or even extirpate the Bad Thing, rather than simply giving us over to destruction. (Unless this is the last technological temptation of all, in which case, neither encyclicals nor newspaper columns will avail us much.)

A rosary and iPhone, brought by an
inflected prose; say that the novelist or essayist who outsources a chapter to AI has committed what should be a career-ending literary crime.
Do not merely fret, as the pope’s encyclical does, that receiving “words of advice, empathy, friendship and even love” from a chatbot can be “misleading” for “less discerning users.” Tell Catholics and other Christians that treating an AI bot like your girlfriend or your boyfriend is a sin.
The point of this kind of condemnation is not to prevent the great AI disruption. It’s to lay the foundation for whatever structures we build on the other side. The necessary contribution of the critic is not to magically convince everyone that it’s wrong to use AI. It’s to convince some people, and then more people, and eventually almost everyone, that it might be wrong to use AI that way.

Dr. Ricardo Angulo Founder PO BOX 6537 Caguas PR 00726
Telephones: (787) 743-3346 • (787) 743-6537
This does not mean, however, that skeptics and critics just need to sit and wait for their darkest fears to be fulfilled. If you are convinced of the existential dangers of AI, then you should favor incremental regulation and increased political awareness, even if what you really desire is a sweeping moratorium. Similarly, if you fear the cultural dangers of AI, then your goal should be to moralize in concrete terms, to identify particular uses of the technology that seem particularly shameful, to tell your readers how not to use AI — even if at some level, you would rather damn the entire era’s pomps and works.
Writing in The Atlantic, Tyler Austin Harper argues that some secular AI skeptics have been drawn to religious thinkers like the pope for exactly this reason — because a secular language of harm seems inadequate to the perils AI creates for humans, which are better identified by the language of sin.
If that’s the case, though, the goal of the critic should be to identify the sin directly, not merely to lament the general advance of the technology nor to make excuses for individuals caught up in disruption.
Do not offer vague laments for the fate of higher education; say that students who use AI to cheat are doing something gravely wrong.
Do not merely bemoan the proliferation of Claude-

“Schmigadoon!,” a musical comedy that lovingly spoofs the genre by imagining a bickering couple trapped in a fantastical village whose residents keep bursting into song, won the coveted Tony Award for best new musical on Sunday night.
The win by “Schmigadoon” came on a night when Tony voters spread their love around.
A chilling and operatic Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman,” starring Nathan Lane and Laurie Metcalf, won the Tony for best play revival, a testament to the enduring power of the classic play and a milestone in the comeback of the producer Scott Rudin.
“Liberation,” a Pulitzer-winning drama by Bess Wohl about a 1970s women’s consciousness-raising group, won best new play, the first time an American woman has won that prize in 37 years. And a stately and sumptuous revival of “Ragtime,” the epic musical exploring America’s promise and perils through the experiences of three intersecting communities in early 20th-century New York, won best musical revival in one of the night’s most closely watched contests, besting a radically reconceived production of “Cats.”

But “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” as the new production is called, won for its two directors, Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, who oversaw the musical’s wholesale transformation from a show set in a junkyard overrun by felines to one about the queer Ballroom dance scene.
Here are some key takeaways from the 79th Annual Tony Awards:
— Pink is a potent host: Pink, the Grammy-winning, arena-filling pop singer, was a surprise selection to host the ceremony — unlike many of her predecessors, she has never appeared in a Broadway show. But with her self-deprecating humor and her obvious affection for theater, she won over the audience at Radio City Music Hall right from the start, kicking off the ceremony with a nine-minute-long, 170-person opening number, set to the tune of “Lady Marmalade” and packed with inside jokes, celebrity shoutouts and loving nods to musicals past, present and even future. The opening number was written by Benj Pasek, Justin Paul and Mark Sonnenblick.
— A famous newbie and a movie star veteran win trophies: Lesley Manville won her first Tony Award for her Broadway debut, as the incestuous Jocasta in “Oedipus.” And John Lithgow won his third Tony Award for starring as Roald Dahl in “Giant,” 53 years after he won for the first time in “The Changing Room.” “I’ve had dozens and dozens of ecstatic moments onstage,” he said, “but I have to tell you, right now, this moment has got to be one of the best.”
— A history-making trophy: Qween Jean, who won for best costume design of a musical (“Cats: The Jellicle Ball”), became the first openly transgender person to win a Tony Award, according to a “Cats” publicist. “We are here for the legacy of queer people, trans people,” Qween Jean
said in her acceptance speech, adding, “We have to take up space, we have to shift the paradigm.”
— ‘Salesman’ soars: The “Death of a Salesman” revival won six prizes, more than any other show, including one for Metcalf and one for its director, Joe Mantello. But Rudin’s role as lead producer was also notable. He had stepped away from producing for four years over bullying accusations, and the “Salesman” win demonstrated that voters are still willing to honor his work.
— ‘Schmigadoon!’ gets a much needed shot: The best musical prize matters because it often provides a boxoffice boost to its winner, and with new musicals struggling on Broadway, every show could use that boost. “Schmigadoon!,” adapted from an Apple TV+ show, was the brainchild of Cinco Paul, directed and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, and features as one of its lead producers Lorne Michaels, the “Saturday Night Live” impresario. “Sometimes singing, dancing, a lot of jokes and a happy ending is really all you need,” a delighted Michaels told the cheering crowd.
— ‘The Lost Boys’ draws blood: “The Lost Boys,” about teen vampires menacing a small family, was the toughest competitor to “Schmigadoon!” Although it didn’t win the big prize, it did win four awards, including for its high-spectacle scenic design, as well as for two leading members of its cast, Shoshana Bean and Ali Louis Bourzgui. Bourzgui gave the most directly political speech of the night, shouting out immigrants, queer and trans rights, and the people of Palesti-
— Gender was a recurring topic: Wohl, upon winning the Tony for “Liberation,” declared, “I want to honor women everywhere who have the courage to use their voice, and to all the girls out there, may you speak your truth, and may the world be wise enough to listen.” She was one of several winners who talked about gender during their acceptance speeches. After winning for “Lost Boys,” Bean said: “This is for every woman who ever felt like she was too much or not enough. I beg you not to wait for permission to be all of who you are.”
— Anniversaries galore: Pink joined a variety of “Chicago” alumni, including Queen Latifah, in celebrating the halfcentury since that show’s original production. Leslie Odom Jr. sang “Without You” from “Rent” as part of the ceremony’s In Memoriam segment, and Rachel Zegler performed a song from “A Chorus Line” in recognition of that show’s 50th anniversary. The original cast of “The Book of Mormon” reunited to perform in honor of that show’s 15th anniversary.

U.S. stocks ended mostly higher on Monday, led by gains in the Nasdaq and chipmakers as investors sought bargains after Friday’s sharp selloff.
Investors were also relieved after Iran and Israel said they had halted attacks on each other. The halt followed an appeal from U.S. President Donald Trump that they immediately “stop shooting.” The attacks over 24 hours were the most direct confrontation between Iran and Israel since an April ceasefire in the war.
The Dow ended lower and stocks overall closed off the day’s highs. Apple shares eased late and finished 1.9% lower even as the company unveiled a series of AI upgrades to Siri.
S&P 500 technology led sector advancers, rising 1.5%, and the Philadelphia SE Semiconductor Index jumped 5.6%, rebounding from Friday’s losses that wiped out $1 trillion in market value for U.S.-listed chipmakers.
Also, Intel shares gained 11.2% after news website the Information reported that Alphabet’s Google had placed an order to manufacture more than 3 million tensor processing units in 2028.
“Today looks like a day where investors are doing a little bit of bargain hunting off the big tech selloff,” said Rick Meckler, partner at Cherry Lane Investments, a family investment office in New Vernon, New Jersey. “What normally happens after that is you get analysts coming in and reiterating buys.”
He added: “This market has been priced for quite a while for perfection, and these are certainly imperfect times. In that environment, you are going to see some back-and-forth, and some fear of prices having gone too far.”
Stocks sold off on Friday after hitting a series of record highs recently. Underwhelming results from chipmaker Broadcom last week had raised concerns that the chip sector was growing too fast, while much stronger than expected jobs data for May contributed to Friday’s rout, as traders priced in interest rate increases this year. Broadcom gained 2.8%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 80.77 points, or 0.16%, to 50,786.01, the S&P 500 gained 21.99 points, or 0.30%, to 7,405.73 and the Nasdaq Composite gained 220.23 points, or 0.86%, to 25,929.66.
Apple announced the Siri revamp at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference at its Cupertino, California, headquarters.
Investors may be having a “sell-on-the-news” response, said Bruce Zaro, managing director at Granite Wealth Management in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

“Perception has been for quite some time that Apple had been behind the curve as far as their AI offerings. That’s why the stock widely underperformed many of the other big techs for some time until recently,” he said.
SpaceX’s initial public offering on Friday could also prove a major test for U.S. stock markets, with investors wary of possible overexuberance.

Other big tech advancers included Marvell Technology, which jumped 9.6% as the chipmaker was set to join the benchmark S&P 500 before the start of trading on June 22. Eli Lilly gained 1.6% after the drugmaker’s trial results showed its next-generation obesity drug, retatrutide, curbed sleep apnea severity in addition to boosting weight loss and helping knee pain.
Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 1.01-to-1 ratio on the New York Stock Exchange. There were 129 new highs and 162 new lows on the NYSE. On the Nasdaq, 2,746 stocks rose and 2,142 fell as advancing issues outnumbered decliners by a 1.28-to-1 ratio.

At first glance, Iran’s retaliation for Israeli attacks in Lebanon might seem like a reckless act that risks rekindling a devastating regional war.
For Iran, those strikes were necessary — part of a more aggressive posturing that marks a strategic shift by its new rulers. For them, the lesson of the war has been that forceful retaliation has allowed them to survive and even emerge with leverage against their more powerful enemies.
“Iran wants to project strength and that they have the power to escalate,” said Omid Memarian, an Iran expert at DAWN, a Washington-based foreign policy think tank. “They are sending the message that they are ready to resume war if necessary.”
For the past decade under Iran’s previous supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country had been more cautious about striking Israel and the United States. In 2020, Iran pursued only limited retaliatory strikes against Washington after the United States assassinated one of its most powerful military leaders, Qassem Soleimani. And it limited its entire retaliation to strikes on a single U.S. base in Qatar during the 12-day war last June.
In recent weeks, Iranian officials largely tolerated Israeli strikes on its most important ally, Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. It criticized those attacks, warning that the fellow Shiite Muslim force should be included in the regional ceasefire it agreed upon with Washington in April. Yet as long as Israel’s strikes were contained to southern Lebanon, Iran did not respond.
Iran warned that calculus would change if Israel expanded those strikes to the southern outskirts of Lebanon’s capital, Beirut, where Hezbollah is dominant. On Sunday, Israel did just that.
“Iran’s attack in defense of Lebanon was not merely a military response, it was the formal declaration of a strategic doctrine,” said Sadegh Larijani, the chair of Iran’s powerful Expediency Council, which advises Iran’s supreme leader.
“If any component of the Axis of Resistance is attacked, the response will extend beyond geographical borders and will alter the regional balance of power,” he said, using Iran’s term for the network of allied militant groups in the region that includes

Hezbollah.
With its actions, Iran wants to show it is serious about defending its regional militia allies. That position had been undermined by its former leaders when they refrained from retaliating against Israeli attacks in 2024 that badly degraded Hezbollah and killed its charismatic leader, Hassan Nasrallah.
Since the U.S.-Israeli war began in February and killed much of Iran’s top former leadership, including Khamenei, Iran’s new rulers believe their willingness to act more aggressively — from blockading the vital Strait of Hormuz to attacking its Gulf neighbors — has been a major success.
To them, analysts say, being more aggressive allowed them to not only survive Washington and Israel’s attacks, but to inflict economic pain and emerge with strategic leverage through control of the strait, a crucial global shipping route for oil and gas.
Iran’s new leaders have also found President Donald Trump more responsive to their more aggressive strategy. Last week, he convinced Israel not to strike Beirut. On Monday, after Israel’s strikes on Beirut’s
outskirts and Iran’s retaliation, he called for both sides to step back.
After his comments, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard quickly announced that it would halt its attacks but said it may attack again if Israel pursues strikes in southern Lebanon, a near certainty.
Such strikes may also offer Iran the opportunity to test the relationship between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Memarian said.
“They understand there’s a gap between Israeli and U.S. objectives,” he said, “and they want to put pressure on Trump to contain Israel.”
But the defense of Hezbollah is not only about testing or posturing. Iran assessed the group’s ability to continue attacking northern Israel during the recent war as critical to giving Iran room to focus its attacks on its oil-rich Gulf neighbors, said Hamidreza Azizi, an Iranian security expert at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.
Allowing Israel to weaken Hezbollah further, he said, would therefore be militarily costly for Iran in a future conflict, which it deems inevitable.
Iran also saw its retaliation as necessary, he said, because it views Israel’s attacks as part of an apparent U.S.-Israeli strategy to try to quietly erode its strategic gains in the recent conflict even as it tries to negotiate a deal to end the war with Washington.
For weeks, U.S. forces have been quietly escorting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. Many analysts describe this as a U.S. attempt to alleviate pressure on the global economy while it tries to increase the economic pressure on Iran by reinforcing its own blockade of Iranian vessels. Iran worries that Israel’s efforts to weaken Hezbollah are another facet of that strategy.
The Iranians believe the United States and Israel “are using the ceasefire to shape the realities on the ground in a way that would erode the leverage Iran has achieved during this war,” Azizi said.
Iran’s willingness to retaliate forcefully also shows how unlikely the country thinks it is that Trump, who is about to host the World Cup games and faces a deepening global economic crisis ahead of midterm elections this fall, will rejoin the fray.
“They don’t think Trump is going to go to war,” said Farzan Sabet, an Iran analyst at the Geneva Graduate Institute in Switzerland. “But even if he does, they’re fairly confident they can manage it.”

Peru’s presidential runoff Sunday was too close to call as preliminary results came in, setting the stage for days or potentially weeks of counting. A quick count showed the two candidates locked in a statistical tie, though the leftist candidate, Roberto Sánchez, had a slight edge.
The race pitted Sánchez, a leftist lawmaker and political heir to a jailed former president, Pedro Castillo, against Keiko Fujimori. Her father was Alberto Fujimori, an authoritarian president in the 1990s who was credited with dismantling brutal leftist rebel groups, but at the cost of unraveling Peru’s democracy and earning a 25-year prison sentence for human rights abuses.
Sánchez spent the campaign’s final weeks pivoting toward the center as he sought to court undecided moderates. He promised to maintain fiscally responsible policies, protect private property and preserve the central bank’s autonomy.
Fujimori, by contrast, catered to her rightwing base as a tough-on-crime candidate and framed Sánchez as a communist and a wouldbe authoritarian who would torpedo private investment.

The race comes as an anti-incumbent wave shifts Latin America toward the political right. Law-and-order governments have transformed Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Ecuador. Peru’s election follows years of political volatility and a punishing crime wave under a succession of presidents. Sánchez is tied to the turbulent record of recent leftist governments, while Fujimori embodies a conservative establishment deeply resented in rural and Indigenous regions.
A quick count by the polling firm Ipsos, which samples vote tallies from a representative selection of polling stations, showed Sánchez with 50.3% and Fujimori with 49.7%.
Though the margin of error leaves the race in a statistical tie that could still flip, the Ipsos quick count has correctly predicted every Peruvian runoff winner since 2001. Immediately after its release, Sánchez appeared on a balcony before a cheering crowd, pumping his fist and striking a celebratory pose alongside his running mate.
He celebrated the “significant lead” but urged supporters to “defend the vote” until a “100% final result.”
Fujimori in a speech said “there is no winner in this race” and that “it would be irresponsible to determine the result based on a sample,” adding that she would respect the final tally.
The official count, with more than 56% of the vote counted, showed Fujimori in the lead with 53% and Sánchez with 47%, but it did not yet reflect balloting in Sánchez strongholds.
Electoral officials said at a news conference that the final audited count would take about a month to complete, raising the possibility of an extended period of political uncertainty.

A7.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the southern Philippines on Monday morning, killing at least 32 people, injuring dozens more and displacing tens of thousands, according to civil defense officials, as the shaking toppled buildings and damaged bridges.
The quake, which hit around 7:37 a.m. local
time, was the most powerful to strike the Philippines in 50 years, according to U.S. Geological Survey figures. The temblor killed 19 and caused widespread damage in the provinces of Sarangani and South Cotabato. A landslide caused by the quake killed an additional 13 in Glan, a town in Sarangani.
“We don’t have a complete picture of the damage, but there are plenty of structures that are cracked,” said Rodrigo O. Sosmena, a senior official at the national Office of Civil Defense who is
based in General Santos, a city in the province of South Cotabato. In addition to the deaths, 134 others were injured and about 70,000 people were displaced, according to disaster management and civil defense officials, with about a dozen people still missing.
Many of the deaths, the authorities said, occurred in General Santos, which has a population of about 700,000 and is known as the tuna capital of the Philippines. The city, and the other worst-affected areas, are on the southern tip of Mindanao, the second-largest island in the country, after Luzon. The region is in one of the most earthquakeprone zones of the Philippines.
The Office of Civil Defense said that General Santos International Airport had been damaged, and the Civil Aviation Authority suspended all operations there and canceled 17 flights.
There were also disruptions to power and communications, and “major damage” to infrastructure, the Office of Civil Defense said. Social media footage appeared to show a shopping plaza crumbling into a heap in General Santos.
Nena Santos, 72, a lawyer in General Santos, was on her way to the airport in a car when the quake struck. She said the shaking was the strongest she had ever experienced and that the temblor seemed to last for five minutes.
“I just closed my eyes and said, ‘Lord, please,
Tensions surrounding the vote set off fears of voter suppression Sunday morning after isolated reports of premarked or damaged ballots emerged. Left-leaning social media accounts said ballots premarked for Fujimori had surfaced in an affluent Lima suburb, while right-wing networks said ballots rigged for Sánchez had been found in the rural highlands.
Peru’s independent civil rights office briefly escalated anxieties by calling the irregularities an “attempted fraud” before reversing course hours later to say that the flawed ballots had affected only about 20 polling booths nationwide with no adverse impact on the vote.
Seeking to project an image of control at a Sunday afternoon news conference, Peru’s top electoral officials rejected the possibility of systematic fraud and said a handful of isolated irregularities had been quickly resolved.
The head of the attorney general’s office on crime prevention, Alfonso Barrenechea, told local news media that 7,000 representatives were policing the vote. He said the system’s guardrails had successfully handled localized threats, and that investigators had intercepted and replaced between 60 and 90 manipulated ballots at 12 polling stations nationwide.
enough,’” Santos said by telephone.
Santos said that she saw collapsed buildings, and noted police cars and ambulances rushing through the streets, with students screaming outside schools.
Julius Golez, who lives with his family about 300 yards from the coast in General Santos, said that he had scrambled to carry his 6-year-old from a bedroom to find higher ground.
“I was very scared, my knees were trembling,” he said. “We were crying; so many other people were also crying.”
The quake struck on the first day of school after a two-month break. Video footage appeared to show elementary school students crying and screaming after the makeshift roof of a nearby structure collapsed.
President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines said in a statement that he had ordered school closures in all the affected areas on Mindanao, adding that the government was mobilizing its disaster response.
Tsunami warnings issued by the authorities in the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia were later downgraded. As of Monday afternoon, Japan had a tsunami advisory in force.
The Philippines is part of the “Ring of Fire,” a horseshoe-shaped chain of seismologically and geologically active islands that surround the Pacific Ocean.
In October, a strong earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Mindanao, killing at least seven people and injuring hundreds more.

Ayear ago, the Trump administration withdrew from a global effort to curb offshore tax-dodging by multinational companies. That decision has been a huge gift to corporate America, enabling companies to avoid at least $40 billion in income taxes since the beginning of 2025.
A New York Times review of securities filings from nearly 500 companies showed that they avoided taxes by attributing hundreds of billions of dollars in earnings to low- or no-tax foreign locales like Cyprus, Bermuda, Switzerland and the Cayman Islands. Often, corporations funneled the profits through subsidiaries in places where they had no employees, offices or customers.

Tax havens became more appealing after President Donald Trump signed an order on his first day back in office withdrawing the United States from a 13-year international effort to end such schemes. The effort led dozens of countries to impose a minimum corporate tax and rules for pursuing companies using tax havens. After House Republicans passed legislation last year targeting some of those countries with a new tax, international officials agreed to exempt U.S. companies from much of the crackdown.
American Express avoided paying $423 million in taxes last year using the island of Jersey. PayPal trimmed its taxes by nearly half during 2025 thanks to its units in Singapore. Stanley Black & Decker cut its bill by $27 million — nearly one-third — using the island of Cyprus.
A favorite destination was the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta, where Abbott Laboratories, the pharmaceutical giant, has claimed all its global profits were earned by a subsidiary with no employees. Malta helped the company cut its tax bill by $336 million last year, the filings show.
Companies making similar moves spanned nearly every sector of the economy: Walmart and Uber; Mastercard and Pepsi; Crocs and Merck; Honeywell and Cigna. To put the $40 billion in taxes they avoided in perspective, it would be enough to triple the annual budget of the Federal Aviation Administration or U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
On the face of it, the offshore tax strategies don’t necessarily violate any laws. But the IRS says some of the companies have gone too far, and tax advisers say the Trump administration’s actions will make it easier to pursue even more aggressive dodges.
“Accommodating the U.S.’s refusal to participate
in the global reforms opens up the door to abuse,” said Philip Marcovici, the former chair of the European tax practice at the law firm Baker McKenzie.
The Times’ analysis relied on a new disclosure required by federal accounting rules. For the first time, in annual 10-K reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, public companies are required to include footnotes reporting the precise amount of tax avoided through each foreign jurisdiction.
Some companies using tax havens to avoid U.S. income tax rely on federal funding for their profits. Thermo Fisher Scientific, the scientific equipment maker, cut its taxes by $3.5 billion last year via Malta. Honeywell, which received over $30 billion in Defense Department contracts over the past decade, used Swiss units to cut its tax rate by more than a quarter — or $301 million — last year.
The widespread tax sheltering comes despite a law passed during the first Trump administration that was billed as a crackdown.
In 2017, Trump signed a $5.5 trillion package of tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefited corporations and the wealthiest Americans. To keep down its overall cost, the package included a few new levies, including one on profits that companies moved into tax havens.
But the provision contained an escape hatch: it permitted companies to blend the profits and taxes reported in places like Ger-
many, France or Japan with earnings reported in tax havens like Grand Cayman. That, in turn, helps many companies avoid the new offshore tax.
The 2017 law “doesn’t solve the profit-shifting problem,” said Elizabeth Stevens, a lawyer at Caplin & Drysdale.
In 2021, the Biden administration said it would join an effort coordinated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to impose a minimum corporate income tax of 15%. That levy applies country by country, avoiding the blending loophole and reducing the incentive to shift income into tax havens.
Dozens of nations signed on, including most European Union members, Japan, Britain and Australia. But the Biden administration failed to muster the votes in Congress to pass the legislation. Trump’s executive order last year withdrew the United States from the global effort, known as Pillar 2.
“We will not get to the golden age of America unless we start removing some of the barriers,” Rebecca Burch, the Treasury Department’s top international tax official, said a few months later, and “until we get Pillar 2 off our backs.” Burch is a former lobbyist for EY, the accounting and advisory firm better known as Ernst & Young.
The Trump administration’s agreement with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development this year frees U.S. companies to park profits in favorable locations — often in conflict with IRS enforcement efforts.
In 2022, the EU issued a directive permitting a handful of countries including Malta to delay carrying out the 15% minimum tax. That tax in Malta will not kick in until the end of 2029.
Profits allocated by U.S. companies to Malta soared to $5.6 billion in 2022 from $134 million in 2017, according to the International Tax Observatory, a research group at the Paris School of Economics. That figure is most likely far larger today, advisers say.

Mexico rallied to win.
By THE STAR STAFF
The Puerto Rican national team went the distance before falling to Mexico in Sunday’s gold medal match at the 2026 NORCECA Women’s Final Four at Salvador Dijols Coliseum in Ponce.
The three-day tournament concluded with a five-set match between two teams that refused to back down.
The set scores were 26-28, 25-19, 25-21, 19-25 and 15-11.
A 5th-set turnaround
Team Puerto Rico took a 10-6 lead in the deciding set, fueled by its defense and the energy of the home crowd. However, Mexico locked in when it counted most. Opposite hitter Sofía Maldonado Díaz scored five consecutive points from Zone 2, turning the score around and completely shifting the
dynamic of the match.
Two attacking errors by Puerto Rico opened the door for Mexico to close the show, and the match ended with an ace by Grecia Esther Castro López.
Statistically, Mexico prevailed in attacks (68-47), blocks (9-7) and service aces (9-6), reflecting its aggressive play at key junctures.
Maldonado Díaz led the offense with 37 points, the highest total recorded in the entire tournament. She was supported by Samantha Bricio with 17 points and Uxue Guereca with 15.
Decelise Champion was the top scorer for Puerto Rico with 24 points, followed by Adriana Rodríguez with 11.
Puerto Rico players earn top honors in 3 categories
The tournament concluded with the recognition of outstanding players for their performances, with Puerto Rico netting several key individual honors: Champion was the event’s Top Scorer and was also named Second Best Spiker, Rodríguez was named Best Middle Blocker and Wilmarie Rivera took the award for Best Setter.
Mexico earned its share of honors, led by Maldonado Díaz, who was named Most Valuable Player following her dominant performance in the final. Her teammate Amaya
Guereca was recognized as Best Spiker, while Bricio won the award for Best Receiver.
Cuba earned three awards: Jessica Aguilera (Second Best Middle Blocker), Yalain Regla de la Peña (Best Opposite), and Evilania Martínez (Best Server).
Costa Rica rounded out the list with a double honor for Rashanny Solano, who was named Best Defender and Best Libero.

Puerto Rico’s Decelise Champion was the tournament’s Top Scorer and was also named Second Best Spiker.

The Mulos of Juncos, Maratonistas of Coamo and Tigres of Hatillo clinched spots in the Superior Double-A Baseball League’s “Carnival of Champions” on Sunday.
Juncos repeated as East Section champions for the third-straight year by crushing the Artesanos of Las Piedras, 12-1. After losing the sectional semifinal series opener, the Mulos won four straight games to eliminate the Artesanos, who had posted the section’s best regular-season record at 18-2.
Dereck Rodríguez pitched six innings for Juncos, allowing just two hits and one run while striking out six to earn the win. Amauri Rodríguez and Fabián Santana led the offense with three RBIs each.
The victory marked the 24th sectional championship for the Mulos -- the most
section titles in Double-A history.
In the South, the Maratonistas dethroned the Peces Voladores of Salinas with a comfortable 16-9 victory, ending Salinas’ five-year reign.
Melvin Reyes hit two home runs and drove in seven runs for Coamo, while William Rivera went 4-for-6 with five RBIs as the Maratonistas won their first sectional title since 2019.
In the North, the Tigres made history by winning their first sectional championship with a 10-8 victory over the Titanes of Florida. Jay Feliciano drove in three runs, and Fernando García went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI for Hatillo. Jaime Ayende pitched three scoreless innings in relief to stave off a Florida comeback and secure the win.
A franchise established in 2006, Hatillo will be making its first appearance in the Carnival of Champions.
Meanwhile, the Pescadores del Plata of Comerío and the Guardianes of Dorado extended their respective series with victories. Both teams faced must-win situations to keep their seasons alive. In the Central Section, the Pescadores del Plata won for the second consecutive time, shutting out the Toritos of Cayey 3-0. The Toritos still lead the best-of-seven series 3-2. Bryan Ortiz pitched the first six innings, allowing just four hits, while star left-hander Luis Leroy Cruz took over from there, striking out four batters. Comerío’s three runs came on a home run by Yadiel Rivera in the top of the third inning.
In the Metro Section, the Guardianes routed the Gigantes of Carolina, 13-3, backed by seven scoreless innings from Andrés Santiago, who struck out seven and allowed only two hits. Joseph Monge drove in three runs, and Edgar Corcino scored three. The Gigantes lead the series 3-2.
