As part of Earth Month 2026, the Scuba Dogs Society (SDS) announced on Monday the event “Caring for Puerto Rico from the Mountain to the Reef,” which will take place on Saturday, April 25 starting at 8 a.m., with simultaneous cleanups of rivers and estuaries throughout Puerto Rico.
The organization also announced that volunteer registration is now open for the environmental and community impact initiative. This year, SDS is focusing its efforts on protecting Puerto Rico’s aquatic systems, recognizing that much of the waste that reaches the coasts originates upstream.
Using a watershed approach, the organization will conduct river and estuary cleanups accompanied by environmental education, the collection of scientific data through citizen science tools, and awareness campaigns about the impact of overconsumption and single-use plastics.
“At Scuba Dogs Society, we promote an integrated view of our ecosystems,” SDS Executive Director María E. Ocasio Torres said. “Everything that happens in the mountains has a direct effect on our coasts and reefs. Through this initiative and the workshops we will be offering throughout the month, we aim to help more people understand this connection and become agents of change in their communities.”
As part of the event, cleanups will be carried out in various bodies of water, including rivers and estuaries in municipalities such as Añasco, Barceloneta, Dorado, Fajardo, Loíza, Luquillo, Río Grande and Yabucoa, among others.
Those interested in participating can register at https:// red.scubadogssociety.org/registro-mes-del-planeta.
The event is open to the general public. Participants
under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Volunteers are encouraged to come prepared with reusable work or gardening gloves as part of efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastics. They are also advised to bring a reusable water bottle, insect repellent, and light snacks to stay hydrated and energized during the activity. The SDS will certify up to four hours of green contact or community service for participating students.
The SDS urges individuals, families, communities, businesses and organizations to join the collective effort and be part of the solution to the pollution of island waterways by registering at https://red.scubadogssociety.org/registro-mesdel-planeta. More information is available at the organization’s social media pages on Facebook and Instagram or at www. scubadogsociety.org.

Gov. Jenniffer González Colón said on Monday that she favors disclosing contracts, as well as promotional and advertising agreements linked to LUMA, while simultaneously questioning the salary of the private grid operator’s new president, Janisse Quiñones.

“I believe so; I think that, clearly, the public should know who is paying whom,” González Colón said in response to questions from the press.
“Let the people know who is being paid,” she added. “Which, by the way, is paid for by the government of Puerto Rico.”
The governor said she would continue to meet with LUMA executives as long as the company remains the operator of the electrical system. She also said the government would continue to demand adequate service while the lawsuit regar-
ding the cancellation of the contract is being resolved in court.
“They remain -- regrettably -- the operator,” González Colón said. “Until the court resolves that lawsuit, I must continue to ensure that the people receive electricity service.”
Regarding Quiñones’ salary, the governor said she does not agree with the compensation the LUMA executive receives.
“I do not earn what the director -- the president -- of LUMA earns,” she said. “I believe I earn annually what she earns in a single month. So, just imagine -- that puts those proportions into clear perspective.”
González Colón also attributed responsibility for rolling blackouts to LUMA and reiterated that the government would continue to demand improvements in electricity service.
“Now, what remains is to eliminate the interruptions caused by the infamous rolling blackouts, which, in this instance, are the exclusive responsibility of the operator -namely, LUMA -- and to lower the cost of electricity,” she said.

Puerto Rico Police Superintendent Jo-
seph González announced Monday that investigators have identified possible suspects in last month’s shooting death of a 14-year-old girl in Loíza.
González also asserted that members of the Loíza community know who was involved in the shooting, and police are asking for their cooperation with the investigation.
“We don’t want to share too many details to avoid compromising the investigation, but we can confirm progress has been made. There are suspects,” González said during a press conference at Police Headquarters.
“Again, I appeal to the community and
local residents: Our intelligence indicates that you know who is responsible. We ask that you contact the police anonymously,” he added. “We always seek your support. Any information you provide could be crucial to this case.”
The victim was identified as 14-yearold Rosinelys Marcano Carrasquillo. Another 14-year-old was wounded in the shooting.
The incident occurred on the night of March 29 in the Tocones sector of Loíza.
The investigation is ongoing, with interviews underway and video evidence being collected.
The police superintendent emphasized that “the intelligence we have is that several people know who is responsible.”
When asked about concerns over
vigilante action before an arrest, González responded, “That is always a concern, and that is why we have increased patrols in that area specifically.”
According to the preliminary investigation, individuals on two motorcycles approached the vehicle carrying the two girls, who had just participated in a volleyball tournament, and opened fire on the red Kia.
Inspector Robert Ramos, deputy director of the auxiliary superintendency of criminal investigations, reiterated that “a motorcycle was seized,” but stated they are still “verifying whether it is related to the case.” He confirmed that “there have been no arrests” and added that there were “some interventions in Loíza for interviews.”
files measure to cite health secretary to a committee of the whole over Politank controversy

The Popular Democratic Party (PDP) delegation in the island Senate announced on Monday the filing of a legislative measure seeking to summon a full Senate hearing to question Puerto Rico Secretary of Health Dr. Víctor Ramos Otero over alleged irregularities within the agency he heads.
During a press conference, PDP Senate Minority Leader Luis Javier Hernández Ortiz said the delegation introduced Senate Resolution 473, which calls on the upper chamber to convene a committee of the whole -- a session of the full Senate -- to conduct an interpellation of the health secretary.
Hernández Ortiz said the measure follows concerns first raised by the minority caucus last summer regarding “a series of irregularities” at the Health Department, one of the island’s largest agencies by budget.
Hernández Ortiz pointed specifically to the appointment in May 2025 of Elisa Muñoz López to two positions within the agency: adviser on legislative affairs and public policy, and chair of the committee overseeing Medicaid-related professional services contracts and requests for proposals.
The minority leader said Muñoz López had previously worked for Politank, a private firm, until the time when Ramos Otero assumed leadership of the Health Department.
The PDP senator further alleged that around the same time as those appointments, a company identified as Intervoice Communica-
tion, which he said had been a Politank client, was awarded a Department of Health contract valued at some $14.1 million.
Hernández Ortiz also referenced recent Senate proceedings in which concerns were raised about a lack of communication between the health secretary and lawmakers regarding the Vieques hospital, calling the proposed hearing an appropriate opportunity for Ramos Otero to appear before the Senate and respond to questions.
PDP Alternate Minority Leader Marially González Huertas said the delegation is confident that the full Senate hearing can be convened and emphasized the importance of transparency.
“The entire country watched the appearance of attorney Francisco Domenech,” González Huertas said, referring to a recent committee of the whole hearing in the upper chamber in which the La Fortaleza chief of staff -- and former owner of Politank -- underwent a grilling. She said that testimony raised doubts about the functioning of the administration of Gov. Jenniffer González Colón, including questions related to the Health Department and the access former Politank employees may have within the agency.
González Huertas said lawmakers are seeking information not only about contracts allegedly linked to Politank, but also regarding matters involving the Vieques hospital.
Sen. Josian Santiago Rivera stressed the importance of the committee of the whole as an oversight tool, drawing comparisons to the earlier Senate hearing involving Domenech.

The majority New Progressive Party delegation in the island Senate blocked a motion to discharge a resolution filed by the Popular Democratic Party minority, seen above, seeking to interpellate Health Secretary Dr. Víctor Ramos Otero before a committee of the whole over alleged irregularities within the agency he heads.
“That hearing exposed a government paralyzed by improper pressure from La Fortaleza to intervene in the approval or denial of contracts,” Santiago said.
He added that a similar hearing involving the health secretary could provide lawmakers and the public with insight into how one of Puerto Rico’s most heavily funded agencies is being administered.
Sen. Ada Álvarez Conde highlighted Muñoz López’s prior employment history at Politank, noting that she had been supervised there by Domenech. She said Domenech confirmed under oath that Muñoz López worked at
Politank until 2023, shortly before joining the Department of Health.
Álvarez Conde also cited public information regarding contract awards at the Department of Health since Ramos Otero took office, arguing those matters warrant Senate scrutiny. She referenced a sworn statement by former Health Secretary Dr. Carlos Mellado López, which she said includes allegations of inappropriate conduct by Domenech during his time as a lobbyist at Politank.
“Did Víctor Ramos participate in those interventions?” Álvarez Conde asked. “Was he the one who promoted those efforts?” She also pointed to public statements by Ramos Otero referring to Domenech as “his brother,” which she said illustrates the closeness between the two men.
Ramos Otero responded later on Monday after the majority New Progressive Party delegation blocked a motion to discharge the PDP minority resolution seeking to interpellate him before the committee of the whole.
“In light of the request for interpellation, I reiterate this administration’s commitment to transparency and collaboration with the Legislature -- always with institutional respect,” Ramos Otero said in a written statement.
“At the Department of Health, we act in accordance with the law and the highest ethical standards,” the official added. “I categorically reject baseless insinuations of irregularity, which serve no purpose other than the partisan political objective of spreading disinformation, sowing confusion, and fabricating false perceptions.”

Correction and Rehabilitation (DCR) Secre-
tary Francisco Antonio Quiñones Rivera has received a preliminary report from the committee evaluating proposals submitted by 12 companies seeking to provide healthcare services within Puerto Rico’s correctional system.
In a written statement, Quiñones Rivera reaffirmed the governing administration’s position on inmate healthcare.
“We remain firm in our commitment to guarantee health services of the highest quality for the correctional population,” the secretary said.
According to the preliminary findings,
three companies emerged as the most viable candidates to continue in the procurement process: Physician Advisers PSC, Renaissance Medical Group (RMG), and Central Physician Services LLC. Officials stressed that none of the three companies has any relationship with the current healthcare provider for the correctional system.
The evaluation committee also identified several bidders whose performance was rated as moderate but still sufficient to remain under consideration. However, the report recommends excluding other proponents after they received unsatisfactory evaluations in critical areas, though those areas were not specified in the document released.
Additionally, two companies -- Management Integrated Solutions Corp. and Strategic Providers Alliance -- voluntarily withdrew from the bidding process.
The competitive review is part of a broader effort by the DCR to replace its current healthcare provider, Physician Correctional, which is now facing a formal contract cancellation process. The company got into trouble because of an incident involving inmate Hermes Ávila Vázquez, who killed Ivette Joan Meléndez Vega after having been released from incarceration on an extended pass granted by the DCR for medical conditions it was later determined he did not have, such as being an AIDS patient and being handicapped.

Rep. José “Cheito” Hernández Concepción has announced that Treasury Secretary Ángel L. Pantojas Rodríguez will be summoned on April 14, along with the director of investigations and inspections in the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTOP by its acronym in Spanish), Arturo Deliz Vélez, Driver Services Executive Director Mary Fuster Romero and former DTOP Secretary Eileen Vélez Vega, to two separate legislative panels to answer questions on discrepancies and a failure to provide essential information on an investigation related to fraud at island vehicle inspection centers.
The lawmaker said in a radio interview the purpose of

the summons is to have the secretaries confirm whether the information from inspection centers is accurate. He also wants to clarify what happened.
Hernández Concepción also announced that ahead of the April 14 hearing, on Friday, April 10, at 10 a.m., a public hearing will be held to interview eight inspection center owners about allegations that vehicle inspection centers have been approving inspections fraudulently.
Some of the allegations to clarify in the hearings, the legislator noted, are: first, that uncertified machines were used to inspect vehicles; second, that one car went in for inspection, but a different car came out; and third, that after an accident, inspection reports did not show the center’s involvement.

The Popular Democratic Party (PDP) announced the polling locations for upcoming primaries to elect the presidents of the party’s municipal committees in Añasco and San Germán, as part of its internal reorganization process.
The announcement was made by PDP Secretary General Manuel Calderón Cerame and the party’s electoral commissioner, Ernesto González Rodríguez, following the certification of more than one eligible candidate in each municipality.
“After the Qualifying Board completed its evaluation
of the documents submitted by candidates seeking the presidency of the Municipal Committees, primaries will be held in Añasco and San Germán because more than one candidate met the requirements established in the party’s regulations,” Calderón Cerame said. “Voting will take place on Sunday, April 26, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in each of the municipalities.”
In San Germán, the certified candidates are José Pascual Ayala Pérez and Reinaldo Somar Ramos Lorenzo. In Añasco, the candidates are Waleska Avilés Medina, Pedro Nieves Sánchez and William Matías Cortés.
González Rodríguez noted that on March 21, the party conducted the official ballot position draw. During that process, and in coordination with representatives of the certified
candidates, the polling centers for election day were selected.
In San Germán, voting will take place at the following locations: Herminia C. Ramírez School, Remington Christian Academy, Lola Rodríguez de Tió School and Francisco M. Quiñones School (Minillas).
In Añasco, voters will be able to cast their ballots at Mariano Bracetti School and Alcides Figueroa School.
The PDP electoral commissioner also reminded party members that voters wishing to participate in the primaries have until April 17 to complete any necessary electoral transactions, including voter registration, reactivation or transfers, either “in person at the Permanent Registration Board or through the electronic registration system, eRE.”

AU.S. Army staff sergeant and his wife arrived at his base in Louisiana last week, expecting to begin their life together as newlyweds.
The couple checked in at the visitor center, identification in hand, ready to complete the steps that would allow her to move into his home on the base.
Within hours, that plan had unraveled.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents entered the base and detained his wife, a Honduran immigrant lacking permanent legal status who was brought to the U.S. as a toddler. By nightfall, she was in a detention facility with hundreds of women facing deportation as part of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. The detention came just days after Annie Ramos, 22, a college student with no criminal record, and Matthew Blank, 23, celebrated their marriage with family and friends. Blank, who enlisted more than five years ago, is assigned to a brigade at Fort Polk, Louisiana, that is set to begin training at the end of the month for deployment.

“Our plan was to drive over, bring her to the office to get her military ID and activate her military spouse benefits,” such as health and life insurance, he said. “She was going to move in after the Easter weekend. Instead, she got ripped away from me.”
When U.S. citizens marry immigrants without permanent legal status, their spouses become eligible for legal permanent residency through marriage, and they can apply for citizenship three years after receiving their green card.
Even those with a prior deportation order, often issued when they were children, are not typically detained and are able to adjust their immigration status, experts said.
Before they were married, Ramos and Blank had hired a lawyer to begin that process.
“I knew she didn’t have status,” he said. “We were doing everything the right way.”
Or so they thought.
Ramos had been ordered deported in absentia in 2005, when she was 22 months old, after her family failed to appear at a hearing in immigration court, a circumstance that was “very common,” according to Margaret Stock, who wrote a book called “Immigration Law and the Military.”
“Prior to the Trump administration creating a mass deportation policy, somebody like her would not have been detained,” said Stock, a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve who practices immigration law and who has handled many similar cases.
She said the military would typically have allowed Ramos to get her military ID and told the couple to file their immigration papers.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security
said that Ramos had been arrested “after she attempted to enter a military base.”
“She has no legal status to be in this country and was issued a final order of removal by a judge,” the statement read. “This administration is not going to ignore the rule of law.”
The U.S. Army did not immediately comment.
Ramos and Blank’s story began early last year. The couple connected through a dating app, then met in person and their romance blossomed. They were engaged on New Year’s Day.
In late March, about 60 guests gathered to celebrate their wedding in Houston, where Ramos was raised. A mariachi band played as the guests shared a meal of fried chicken, Spanish rice and mashed potatoes.
Blank’s mother, Jen Rickling, said in an interview that her daughter-in-law was “absolutely a darling, and we adore her” and listed her qualities.
Ramos is a devout Christian who teaches Sunday school to children at her church, Rickling said. She was in her high school’s marching band. And she was a few months from finishing a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry.
On Thursday, the couple and Blank’s parents drove from Houston to the base, arriving early for a 2 p.m. appointment. As instructed, the couple checked in at the visitor center, where they presented Ramos’ birth certificate, Honduran passport, their marriage license and Blank’s military ID. They never made it to the benefits office.
According to Blank and his mother, an attendant scrutinized the documents and asked if Ramos had a visa
or a green card. She did not, they explained, noting that their lawyer had prepared a green card application that would be filed any day.
The attendant made a flurry of calls.
“They told us, ‘We’ll figure it out,’’’ recalled Blank.
He said that he and his wife were respectful and he kept his composure despite thinking that the officials were “dragging it out.” Tears began to stream down his wife’s face.
A supervisor was called, followed by an officer from the base’s criminal investigation division, who said he would contact Homeland Security and ICE.
After the call, Blank said, the officer told them Ramos would be detained. The family broke down in tears.
Ramos was separated from them, placed in handcuffs and driven away in a military police vehicle. Blank said he and his parents followed in their truck to another building, where she was unshackled and placed in what “looked like an interrogation room.”
Three ICE agents arrived. They first encountered Rickling and her husband in the lobby.
“They told us that they didn’t have a choice, they said they had to take Annie,” recalled Rickling. She said they apologized.
“I begged them not to take her,” Rickling said. “They said the higher-ups made them do it.”
The agents entered the room, offered the couple the same explanation, again shackled Ramos and took her away. Their lawyer has asked ICE to release Ramos on her own recognizance while a motion is prepared to reopen the old deportation order, which would block her removal.
Ramos had applied in 2020 for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, a program that shields from deportation people brought to the U.S. as children. Her application was never processed by the Trump administration because the program was halted for new applicants.
“I grew up here like any American,” Ramos said during a call from the detention center in Basile, Louisiana.
“This is all I know,” she said. “My husband and family are here.”
Blank said: “We are going to fight with everything I have. She is going to move in with me. We will start a family.”
Blank, who has been previously deployed to the Middle East and Europe, said that his chain of command has been supportive as he works to resolve the situation.
“I am going to be with her and serve my country,” he said
On Saturday, he and his mother traveled to the detention center in Basile, Louisiana, with the completed form to apply for Ramos’ green card. It only needed her signature.
Guards barred them from bringing anything inside.

The Artemis II astronauts have now ventured farther from Earth than anyone else in the history of humanity. At 1:56 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, their distance from Earth passed 248,655 miles, the record that had been set by Apollo 13 in 1970. For the next few hours, they were to travel farther, reaching a distance of 252,752 miles.
During this mission, the four astronauts have launched to space, tested life support and other important systems of their Orion spacecraft, tangled with the vehicle’s toilet, puzzled over personal computing devices and left low-Earth orbit. They are the first humans to do so since 1972, although they will not land on the moon.
The three Americans and one Canadian aboard Artemis II were set on Monday to make even more history.
First, Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen became the humans who have traveled farthest from Earth. They surpassed the astronauts of Apollo 13, whose lunar mission went awry.
Later, the astronauts were to pass behind the far side of the moon, seeing parts of the moon never observed with human eyes, gathering scientific data on what they spotted. In the process, they were to fall out of radio contact with Earth for about 41 minutes.
As the crew was to come out of its scheduled communications blackout, they stood to have an opportunity to create a moment for a new generation as inspirational as the “Earthrise” of NASA’s Apollo 8 mission in 1968. Here’s what else to know.
— Going farther: The astronauts officially began the lunar flyby phase of their mission around 2:45 p.m. Monday, starting a period of intensive observation of the lunar surface. As they were to go around the far side of the moon, the astronauts were to reach their maximum distance from Earth at 7:07 p.m., before looping back toward the planet.
— How to watch: NASA is streaming live video coverage of the mission 24 hours a day. You can view it on YouTube, X, the agency’s website and its smart TV apps.

— Radio blackout: When the astronauts were to go around the lunar far side, they were to lose contact with Earth because the moon blocks radio signals from Earth. This was expected to occur at 6:44 p.m. and was no cause for alarm. (During the Apollo missions, the command module repeatedly passed behind the moon, providing some periodic respite from mission control for the astronaut who waited in lunar orbit while his two crewmates walked on the surface.) At 7:02 p.m., the crew was to zip over the moon at an altitude of 4,070 miles, its closest approach.
— Bonus eclipse: After the astronauts came around the
far side, they were to experience a 53-minute solar eclipse starting at 8:35 p.m. They were to be able to observe the solar corona from a unique perspective, as well as unusual glimpses of Earth and other planets.
— Five days: The Artemis II mission launched to orbit on the evening of April 1. After a day of testing important systems in a high Earth orbit, the crew flew away from the planet on Day 2. On Days 3 and 4 the astronauts tested other systems and spoke with family. At the end of Day 5 they entered the lunar sphere of influence, where the pull of the moon’s gravity is stronger than Earth’s.

By DAVID FRENCH
Igrew up in a strict, fundamentalist Christian tradition. Most churches in my denomination didn’t celebrate Christmas and Easter (though that is now changing) because they were deemed pagan vestiges that had been arbitrarily Christianized by the apostate Catholic Church.
My family embraced those holidays, but my church did not — so much so that at church we’d sometimes defiantly sing Christmas carols out of season, just to demonstrate our theological independence. (“Silent Night” doesn’t land quite the same when you sing it in the middle of July. Neither does “Joy to the World.”)
I never quite believed our exclusive theology, at least not all of it. But I hadn’t been exposed to the alternatives. I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. I encountered historic Christianity as a curious adult, not as a child who couldn’t fully comprehend what I was seeing. The practices of other churches were all new to me, and one in particular changed me forever.
My first year in law school, when I was 23 years old, I went to an Easter Vigil. Or, to be more precise, an evangelical version of the Catholic Service of Light. The church of the smoke machine can sometimes imitate the church of incense.
It began in darkness — symbolizing the darkness of death during the days after Christ’s crucifixion — and then the pastor lit a candle. High church Christians — Roman Catholics and Episcopalians, for example — may recognize this as the paschal candle, the symbol of Christ’s resurrection.
For a time, only the paschal candle penetrated the gloom, but then — as we sang hymns of praise — we picked up our own candles and one by one lit them with the flame from the paschal candle. Christ’s light became our light. Christ’s life became our life. By the end of the service, the entire church was ablaze with light.
I know there are readers who are rolling their eyes in disbelief and others who are thinking, “Well thanks, David, for describing something I’ve done my whole life.” But for me, it was a revelation.
Christians aren’t the only people who believe that man has a soul, that this life is not the sum total of our existence. We do, however, make a startling assertion, that God himself defeated death — that he entered into history, lived on this earth, was crucified and then returned to life. He demonstrated his mastery over death by appearing to many people, who shared their accounts of his crucifixion and resurrection. They say they saw him die and then live again. If this is true, it changes everything. If we truly are created in the image of God, then his life becomes our life. We are not gods, of course, but we are eternal beings. The curse

of Adam — “for dust you are and to dust you will return” — is broken by the sacrifice and resurrection of Christ.
Or, as C.S. Lewis wrote, Christ “has forced open a door that has been locked since the death of the first man. He has met, fought, and beaten the King of Death. Everything is different because He has done so.”
Before that service, I had always recognized this theological reality in personal terms: Christ’s sacrifice gave me the hope of eternal life. But there was something about that roomful of candles that touched my heart. It elevated the dignity and worth of every person in that room.
When you interact with a friend, with a neighbor, even an enemy, you are meeting a person who possesses an eternal soul. We are not meeting a talking animal, a person who is here today and gone tomorrow.
This is one reason I’m as stricken as I am when I see cruelty in the name of Christ. It’s one reason that, of all the sins I regret, I regret my own cruelty the most.
The book of Isaiah — written hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus — contains a beautiful description of the character of the coming Messiah. “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick,” it says, “he will not snuff out.”
I don’t know if the United States is in the midst of anything like a true religious revival. It does seem, at the very least, that the long decline in American Christianity has slowed, if not stopped. There is anecdotal evidence seemingly everywhere of a surge of interest in faith. I see it especially on college campuses, where students are constantly asking me about my own beliefs.
I think I know why.
I’ve been writing for years about the rise in American polarization and the rise in mental health problems. I just wrote about how parents are less concerned about sex, drugs and rock’n’roll (the vices of generations past) than they are about their kids’ anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation. We live in a nation of unprecedented prosperity, but we are not thriving. Instead, we struggle to feel like equal members of a society that is orienting itself to cater to the desires of a very wealthy minority.
Another way of putting it is that we have become a nation of smoldering wicks. We struggle to feel hope. We struggle to feel purpose. We look at the world around us and ask: “Is this all there is? Is this really what it looks like to live in the wealthiest and most powerful nation in the history of the world?”
But it is in moments exactly like this one when the light from that single paschal candle shines so brightly. It’s the light that symbolically declares that this is not all there is and that our eternal existence will outshine our present grief and pain. Recognizing that spark of eternity in ourselves and others helps heal that grief and pain.
Every Easter I think about the people I’ve lost. I think of the friend who died of colon cancer. I think of the men I served with in Iraq who never came home.
I’ve written about Michael Medders before. He might have been the most beloved officer in our unit. I never met a person who didn’t love Mike. A former football player, he was the strongest of us. He was relentlessly cheerful and funny. He was ready with a joke even after an IED blast. He was one of those people you just felt was invincible — right until a suicide bomber took his life on Sept. 24, 2008.
Almost three years later, in the summer of 2011, my friends and I gathered in his hometown, Avon Lake, Ohio, to spend time with his family, to honor Mike’s memory. As we visited Mike’s grave, one of my friends spoke as if he was standing right there beside us.
“Hi Mike,” he said. “We miss you.”
I think about that greeting all the time. It was a profound declaration of faith: Death was not the end. Mike’s light still burns. We will see him again.

Long before he became a communications adviser and a journalist, before he learned how to ask questions with the sharpness of a scalpel and the hesitation of someone who has lived more than he lets on, Juan José Díaz Díaz ca rried a chapter in his life that most people did not know about. It was not a scandalous secret, although some would later believe it was. It was, more simply, a chapter of Puerto Rico’s urban history that has now dissolved into rumor, myth, and silence — and replaced by something cleaner and less interesting. He happened to stand in the middle of that story. For several years in his twenties, he worked as a bartender in Puerto Rico’s notorious brothel, the Black Angus Night Club in San Juan, and he recounts that experience in his memoir “Desde la Barra del Black Angus (confesiones de un barten der),” published by 14 Segundos.
The notorious Black Angus was located in Miramar, part of the Santurce tourism district. In the 1970s and 80s, the area was a far cry from the polished neighborhood seen today. Triple‑X theaters dotted the streets. Bars came alive after dark. There were other brothels in the area, such as the Hawaiian Hut. All were shut down by Gov. Pedro Rosselló and demolished in the 1990s to make way for the Conven tion Center. Growing up in the 1960s to the 1990s, everyone knew about the brothel that on paper was listed as a restau rant. Young teenagers visited Black Angus as a rite of passage. Some would make jokes such as: “I saw your sister at Black Angus.”
But why tell the story now? After all, the Black Angus closed decades ago; the building is gone. Much of Miramar’s old red‑light district has been paved over or renovated into cafés and condos. The author noticed that new generations have never even heard of the place.
“There’s no historical memory,” he says. “People in their thirties and forties had only vague references — something their parents whispered about. I realized that if I didn’t write it now, it would disappear.”
As a young man from Corozal schooled in a small town sense of decency, Díaz was in his twenties, newly married, and studying. He worked as a stand up comic and got a job at Black Angus through his brother in law, Tito, the owner of the notorious brothel.
Telling people he worked at Black Angus at the time got mixed reactions. The author still recalls the police officer who once stopped him, only to light up when he learned the man was a bartender at Black Angus.
“His eyes sparkled,” Díaz said.
However, a bank official once reacted with confusion and near horror, unable to reconcile the polite Díaz with the legendary establishment.
According to the author, the Black Angus was legally incorporated as a restaurant in 1966, and its cost was put at $250,000, but he does not know how it became a brothel or whether that was the intention from the start. He said he ne ver discussed the topic with Tito. The building had previously been a hotel, according to photos and signage, which would

explain how rooms became part of the operation.
“I never knew if that was the original intention,” he says. “Obviously, no one was going to advertise it. Prostitution is illegal. But somewhere along the way, the building changed purpose — and reputation.”
While the name Black Angus evokes a steak house, the restaurant operating at the site was Chinese, “and the food was very good,” Díaz said. Many clients visited the place just to eat at the popular eatery.
The Black Angus was a three story structure with two large wooden doors at the front — heavy, imposing doors that announced arrival without revealing what lay beyond. At the center was a translucent wall that appeared decora tive, perhaps even elegant, but behind it were the stairs lea ding to the rooms above. Clients and prostitutes would ac cess those stairs through an exterior hall that bordered the structure, a narrow passage that allowed for discretion, for the comfortable fiction that nothing unusual was happening. His brother‑in‑law Tito, an accountant by training, ran Black Angus with the methodical precision of any other business: renovations were planned, a newly built bar was installed, receipts were kept, structure was maintained.
“A legitimate operation,” Díaz says — and he means it without irony.
Díaz writes about the Black Angus without sensationalism, without moral posturing, and without the voyeurism often found in stories set in society’s underbe lly. Instead, he writes as someone who lived between two worlds — the life he was raised in and the life he stumbled into.
What stayed with him most were the women, a part of San Juan’s history that is almost never documented.
Most of the prostitutes were foreigners; only a few were Puerto Rican. Most used aliases. The Black Angus did not hire prostitutes but allowed them to work at the bar in two shifts and required medical tests. The business benefited from the work of the prostitutes by leasing out the hotel rooms for 15 minutes for about $20. The prostitutes would keep all the money for the services provided. The Black Angus imposed monetary penalties on prostitutes for leaving a shift early. To some, it may seem exploitative, but to Díaz, it was part of an imperfect system.
“I know that it will sound incredible, but all of the ones who would talk to us said they were there because they wan ted to. … At the end, I chose to believe them,” he said.
Politicians frequented the place — some quietly, some openly, but names do not appear in the book. Díaz said it was out of respect for the blurred line between presence and participation.
“It would be unfair,” the author says. “Some men went there only to drink a beer, to talk, to pass the time. They never touched anyone. To name them would suggest otherwise.”
During the interview, he mentioned the name of a de ceased politician who enjoyed drinking Heineken.
Despite the club’s profitability, not everything was as it seemed. One of the details that may stun readers — and that Díaz discussed in his book — was the practice of “tricked drinks”: bottles of premium alcohol refilled with cheaper alco hol. For instance, the expensive vodka was, in reality, the che aper version, Skaya. However, all drinks cost $3 at the time.
“It was more common than people think,” he said. “Many bars did it.”
The club itself, he believes, would not exist today even without its expropriation by the government. Security came ras mounted on every corner, cellphones in every pocket, and the relentless exposure of social media would have made its carefully maintained ecosystem of discretion impossible to sustain. The magic of the Black Angus — dark and light in equal measure — required a world that no longer exists: one where certain things could happen in the middle of a city and still, somehow, remain private.
For him, the Black Angus was never the caricatured brothel of whispered jokes or the den of chaos that moral imagination tends to conjure. It was something stranger, more human, more complex — a place where the ordinary and the illicit intertwined under dim lights and soft music.

Afresh read on inflation and initial company results next week could start to show the Middle East war’s effects on the U.S. economy and corporate America, as investors hope to start moving past a conflict that has consumed markets.
Traders were wrestling with conflicting signals about a potential winding down of the war that began over a month ago, with the U.S.-Israeli military strikes on Iran.
The S&P 500 (.SPX), posted a gain in the holidayshortened week, snapping a five-week streak of losses. The benchmark index earlier in the week closed its worst-performing quarter since 2022, weighed down since late February by the war and the resulting surge in energy prices.
“It’s going to be hard to get the market’s attention off the Middle East, oil prices and the risks that have emerged,” said Matthew Miskin, co-chief investment strategist at Manulife John Hancock Investments. “The markets have been so myopically focused on geopolitical risk and ... how all this is going to shake out.”
Stocks have stumbled this year, with concerns about artificial-intelligence disruption and private credit weakness compounding uncertainty over the Middle East conflict. The S&P 500 was last down nearly 6% from its lateJanuary all-time high.
The war’s impact on oil supplies and energy prices remained the focal point for investors, especially the status of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical Middle East oil-shipping channel where traffic has stalled. U.S. crude topped $110 a barrel on Thursday after the commodity earlier in the week settled above $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022.
“The market is pricing off oil,” said Doug Huber, deputy chief investment officer at Wealth Enhancement Group. “Inflation expectations, bond markets -- everything is stuck to this concept of what oil is doing.”
CPI to jump, high prices at the pump
Next week’s consumer price index, a closely watched inflation gauge, stands as an early test of the war’s energy shock. With U.S. crude jumping some 90% since the start of the year, the U.S. average gasoline price rose above $4 a gallon this week for the first time in more than three years.
The plans aim to cover strategic sectors like batteries, wind and solar energy, nuclear power, and electric vehicles.
“We think the first stage of oil price pass-through will have arrived in March via motor fuel,” BNP Paribas said in a note previewing the CPI report.
The March CPI report, due on April 10, is expected to have climbed 0.9% on a monthly basis, according to a Reuters poll as of Thursday. Excluding energy as well as food prices, the “core” CPI level is expected to have risen 0.3%.
Miskin said he would look for “ripple effects” across other goods and services stemming from the war and ener-

gy-price surge, while adding that the March report may be too soon to see any broader inflationary impact.
“You’re just trying to get as much real-time data as you can to formulate where the inflation and economic growth trends are going,” Miskin said.
Q1 results loom, with big profit hopes War-driven inflation worries have led markets to largely rule out interest rate cuts this year, after such cuts had been a key underpinning for many bullish stock outlooks.
“The market already has inflation on the brain,” said Patrick Ryan, chief investment strategist at Madison Investments. If CPI were to “surprise with a much higher print, that could also be something that the market would take negatively.”
Next week also brings the release of another inflation measure, the personal consumption expenditures price index, but that PCE data will cover February, a period largely before the war took hold. An updated read of fourth-quar-

ter U.S. economic growth is also due, while investors will also analyze Wednesday’s release of the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s March meeting for any clues about the future path of rates.
The start of earnings season also will start grabbing Wall Street’s attention, with investors counting on a broadly strong corporate profit outlook to support U.S. stocks this year. Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), and beverage maker Constellation Brands (STZ.N), are among those due to report next week.
Those reports will offer a taste of the first-quarter reporting season, which kicks off the following week. S&P 500 companies overall are expected to post a 14.4% rise in first-quarter earnings from the year-earlier period, according to LSEG IBES.
“The Q1 earnings season beginning in mid-April should show that underlying earnings growth is still strengthening and broadening,” Deutsche Bank equity strategists said in a note.

President Donald Trump on Monday escalated his threats to devastate Iran if it does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, even as he again floated the possibility that diplomacy may yet avert steps to prolong and deepen the war.
“We have a plan, because of the power of our military, where every bridge in Iran will be decimated by 12 o’clock tomorrow night, where every power plant in Iran will be out of business, burning, exploding and never to be used again,” Trump said at a White House news conference. If the attacks take place, he added, “It will take them 100 years to rebuild.”
Trump gave a laudatory depiction of the rescue of a missing American airman shot down over Iran. The mission involved 155 aircraft and hundreds of people, he said, though “a lot of it was subterfuge” designed to lead Iranian forces away from the aviator. He also revealed that the plane, a U.S. Air Force F-15E, had been downed by a single shoulder-fired missile.
At an earlier White House appearance, Trump added to the conflicting signals that have characterized the conflict, now in its second month, by saying he wanted the United States to take Iran’s oil and profit from it. That would imply a long-term and risky U.S. presence in the region, but “unfortunately the American people would like to see us come home.”
His remarks to reporters came after Iran made a new
10-point peace proposal and after Trump renewed his threat to bomb Iranian civilian infrastructure if Iran does not allow shipping to pass freely through the critical strait, a conduit for a significant portion of the world’s crude oil and natural gas.
“It’s a significant proposal,” Trump said of the Iranian proposal, which was made through Pakistani mediators. “It’s a significant step. It’s not good enough. But it’s a very significant step.”
Later he said, “I can tell you that we have an active, willing participant on the other side. They would like to make a deal.”
The full contents of the Iranian plan were not made public, but diplomatic efforts have yielded little so far, despite Trump’s repeated claims of progress, with each side making demands that the other has dismissed as unacceptable. Iranian and U.S. officials have communicated mostly through intermediaries, like Pakistan.
“If it were up to me, I’d take the oil,” Trump said of Iran. “I’d keep the oil, and we’d make plenty of money. And I would also take care of the people of Iran much better than they’ve been taken care of. It’s been horrible.”
He has threatened repeatedly to bombard critical Iranian infrastructure, like power plants and bridges, setting deadlines for opening the strait and then repeatedly postponing them. On Sunday, he pushed back the deadline by a day,
to Tuesday evening in the United States. Analysts say that without tangible progress toward peace, the postponements risk eroding the power of his warnings.
Trump said Monday that the Iranian people support the bombing campaign. “They would be willing to suffer that in order to have freedom,” he said, adding, “We have had numerous intercepts, ‘please keep bombing.’”
Iran said Monday that it would retaliate forcefully if Trump carried out his threatened attacks, which would affect millions of civilians, in what many legal experts argue could be considered war crimes under international law.
“If attacks on civilian targets are repeated, the subsequent phases of our offensive and retaliatory operations will be carried out much more crushingly and extensively,” Ebrahim Zolfaghari, an Iranian military spokesperson, said Monday.
Here’s what else we’re covering:
— University bombed: Overnight airstrikes hit Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran’s top science, engineering and math institute, prompting outraged responses from Iranians, including opponents of the regime. The university is under Western sanctions for ties to the Iranian military and agencies that develop weapons systems.
— Rescued airmen: The two U.S. airmen who were rescued after being shot down over Iran were receiving care at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a military hospital in Germany, a U.S. military official said.
— Attacks across the Middle East: Israel said it had bombed a major Iranian petrochemical complex Monday, just days after it struck a similar site — part of an avowed goal to destroy factories that fill Iran’s coffers. Israeli rescue workers retrieved the bodies of four people killed by an Iranian missile strike in Haifa, according to Israeli authorities.
— Warning from oil nations: Eight members of the consortium of influential oil producing nations known as OPEC+ on Sunday expressed concern about the toll the war was taking on global oil supplies and energy infrastructure in the region. “Restoring damaged energy assets to full capacity is both costly and takes a long time,” the group said in a statement.
— Death tolls: The Human Rights Activists News Agency said at least 1,606 civilians, including 244 children, had been killed in Iran as of Friday. Lebanon’s Health Ministry on Thursday said at least 1,345 Lebanese had been killed since the latest fighting between Israel and Hezbollah began. In attacks blamed on Iran, at least 50 people have been killed in Gulf nations. In Israel, at least 20 people had been killed as of Monday. The American death toll stands at 13 service members, with hundreds of others wounded.

With war in the Middle East casting a shadow over the celebrations of the most important date on the Christian calendar, Pope Leo XIV used his first Easter address as pontiff to renew pleas for peace and dialogue, and to condemn violence.
“On this day of celebration, let us abandon every desire for conflict, domination and power, and implore the Lord to grant his peace to a world ravaged by wars and marked by a hatred and indifference that make us feel powerless in the face of evil,” Leo said Sunday to tens of thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
The first U.S.-born pontiff has been increasingly outspoken on the issues of war and peace in recent weeks during the U.S.Israeli war in Iran. His Easter message came amid new Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon and President Donald Trump’s threatening to rain down “hell” on Iran.
Under a sunny sky in Vatican City, thousands celebrated Easter Mass and listened to the traditional “Urbi et Orbi,” or “To the City and the World,” message, a compendium of the Vatican’s global concerns and the pope’s priorities.
“Let those who have weapons lay them down. Let those who have the power to unleash wars choose peace,” Leo said in the message. “Not a peace imposed by force, but through dialogue. Not with the desire to dominate others, but to encounter them.”
Cheers and applause rose from the

crowd, and thousands of cellphones shot up simultaneously when Leo appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, where he first stood in May after he was elected pope. His predecessor, Pope Francis, had died a few weeks earlier, the day after Easter.
One of Francis’ last acts had been to preside over Easter Mass in St. Peter’s Square, ignoring his doctors’ orders to slow down less than a month after he had been discharged from a lengthy hospital stay.
In his own message, Leo borrowed an expression from Francis, citing the incre-

asing “globalization of indifference.” Leo made that plea his own, saying, “We are growing accustomed to violence, resigning ourselves to it, and becoming indifferent.” Leo, who tends to avoid direct criticism of nations or leaders, did not name specific conflicts. The Urbi et Orbi messages that popes deliver twice a year, at Christmas and at Easter, often include calls for peace, singling out active global conflicts.
The Rev. Gonzalo de la Morena, a Spanish priest who was among those in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, said he had been touched by the pope’s words. “He made me reflect, also at a personal and social level,

that peace and love require sacrifices, but they are worth it,” he said.
After 12 years of Francis’ outspoken papacy, Leo has until now opted for a more deliberate public stance. The war in Iran has led him to be more forthright, particularly after Pete Hegseth, the U.S. defense secretary, asked Americans to pray “every day, on bended knee” for a military victory in the Middle East “in the name of Jesus Christ.”
Leo has not referred specifically to Hesgeth, but during his Palm Sunday homily a week ago, Leo said that God rejects the prayers of “those who wage war,” and that their “hands are full of blood.”
On Tuesday, speaking to reporters outside the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo, near Rome, Leo said he hoped Trump was “looking for an off-ramp” to end the war. “Hopefully, he is looking for a way to decrease the amount of violence, of bombing, which would be a significant contribution to removing the hatred that’s being created and it’s increasing constantly in the Middle East and elsewhere,” the pope said.
And in a homily during a Mass on Thursday morning, Leo said that the Christian mission had often been “distorted by a desire for domination, entirely foreign to the way of Jesus Christ.”
On Sunday, he reiterated that “the power with which Christ rose is entirely nonviolent.”
Leo added that the “true strength that brings peace to humanity” fostered “respectful relationships at every level: among individuals, families, social groups and nations.”
“We cannot continue to be indifferent,” he said. “And we cannot resign ourselves to evil.”
Eddie and June Graham, who traveled to Rome from Glasgow, Scotland, with their children for Easter, said that while they did not speak fluent Italian, they had understood Leo’s pleas against indifference. “We as humans need to create a critical mass in opposition to violence and war,” Eddie Graham said. “It’s the indifferent middle that actually make all the difference.”
Leo, who leaves for a 10-day trip to Africa on April 13, announced that Saturday he would celebrate a prayer vigil for peace in St. Peter’s Basilica.
“Every time I see the pope, it’s emotional,” said Giulia Albanese, a tour guide from Rome, who was taking a break from a tour.

The labor market put in a strong showing in March as wintry weather receded, strikes concluded and businesses started looking beyond the huge changes of President Donald Trump’s first year in office.
The Labor Department reported last Friday that employers had added 178,000 jobs last month, substantially more than economists had expected, bringing the average over the past three volatile months to a healthy 68,000 positions. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.3%, leveling off after a gradual rise, as the workforce contracted slightly.
The numbers were collected before the energy price shock caused by the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran tightened its grip on the global economy, however. Forecasters have estimated that persistently higher oil prices will slow job creation and raise unemployment in a year when they had expected the economy to regain some vigor.
“A lot of people thought this was going to be the year that finally we put political uncertainty behind us and the labor market was going to reaccelerate,” said Guy Berger, chief economist at Homebase, a scheduling and payroll platform. “And it’s still too early for gas prices to meaningfully affect the labor market, so maybe this is a ‘what might have been.’”
The job surge in March will most likely give the Federal Reserve some comfort as the central bank tries to balance stubborn inflation with a soft labor market. This is the last employment report before its next meeting at the end of the month.
As has been the case for the past few years, gains were led by health care and social assistance professions, which packed on 90,000 jobs. That number includes 31,000 workers who ended a strike at Kaiser Permanente in California, but even without them, the increase was slightly above the rate at which the sectors have been growing over the past year.
The easing of a stormy, icy winter helped to boost leisure and hospitality employers, which added 44,000 workers. The changing weather may also have propelled construction, which grew by

26,000 jobs. That industry has been surging since last fall, primarily because of the industrial jobs created by the data center boom.
It’s not clear that this pace can continue for much longer. The share of the population that is employed has been dropping and now stands at 59.2%, driven by aging demographics and the Trump administration’s harsh immigration restrictions. As the available workforce contracts, the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas estimated this week that the break-even rate of jobs needed to absorb new workers could be negative.
“This is a whole new world,” said Laura Ullrich, director of economic research at the job search website Indeed. “The idea that all of a sudden, a report of 50,000 jobs could be a good report, that’s hard to wrap your brain around. Now we’re at zero to 30,000.”
There are other signs of declining dynamism. The hiring rate in February sunk to a low last reached in 2020, when the economy was largely shut down. Surveys by the National Federation of Independent Business have shown that the
fertilizer prices is expected to force consumers to cut back spending on other priorities that employ people, like going out to eat and taking long road trips. Goldman Sachs estimates that the oil price shock will reduce monthly employment growth by 10,000 jobs through 2026.
On top of that, trade uncertainty, persistently high interest rates and immigration enforcement activities have prompted economists to mark up their expectations of a recession next year.
“The labor market has been really resilient, but I don’t know if we’ve seen the combination of everything that’s happening right now,” said Elizabeth Crofoot, an economist at the employment data firm Lightcast. “And I’m not sure how much further we can hold on.”

share of business owners with jobs they can’t fill has been falling, and only 12% plan to add jobs in the next three months.
Consistent with that frozen picture, average hourly earnings grew only 3.5% in March from a year ago, the slowest pace since 2021 and only slightly faster than inflation. That may also be a consequence of shifting composition, as more jobs are added in relatively low-wage social assistance roles and subtracted from higher-paid sectors like financial services and computer systems design.
At the same time, layoffs have remained extremely low, as companies have sought to retain talent rather than let people go only to rehire them later. The average workweek shortened to 34.2 hours, indicating that employers are cutting hours rather than head count. The federal government is a notable exception, having shed a total of 355,000 positions, or 11.8%, since reaching a peak in October 2024.
The March report is a snapshot of the economy before the impact of the war in the Middle East began to be felt in earnest. The resulting spike in gasoline, diesel and

Rocket failures, oxygen leaks, space debris and scorching heat: These are just a few of the risks that NASA’s Artemis II astronauts face as the first humans to return to the moon in more than half a century.
Since NASA first attempted to send people beyond the safety of Earth, spaceflight has been a death-defying endeavor. The agency has always grappled with risky scenarios, from the flash fire of Apollo 1 in 1967 to the rocket thruster issues that recently extended the stay of the Boeing Starliner astronauts in orbit for extra months. Those dangers grow more intense the farther you get from home.
But the failures and close calls bring experience in predicting and preparing for the hazards of spaceflight.
“We will never get risk down to zero in this line of work,” Jared Isaacman, the NASA administrator, said in an interview.
Isaacman, who conducted a spacewalk on a private space mission he financed, said some risks are worth taking. “It’s the greatest adventure in human history,” he said. “I think it’s absolutely our destiny to go out and explore among the stars.”
For all the dangers faced by NASA’s moon-bound crew, it is confident in the work that has been done to make the 10day journey in the Orion spacecraft safe.
“I once joked that every lesson that has ever been learned in human spaceflight has been rolled into Orion,” Reid Wiseman, the commander of Artemis II, said in a NASA podcast about the mission. “Every cable is a little bit thicker than it needs to be. Every computer has more redundancy than it needs to.”
Wiseman added, “You need those redundant and reliable systems” when flying into deep space.
Liftoff and early ascent
Orion is flying on NASA’s giant Space Launch System rocket. After the uncrewed Artemis I mission in 2022, Artemis II will be the first time the rocket flies with astronauts on board.
“Crew safety is literally the prime directive,” said Carolyn Overmyer, an engineer at Lockheed Martin Space responsible for the technical integrity of Orion. “Whatever we do, crew safety is the thing that you have to think about first.”
The risks start before leaving the ground. Mission control pushed back the launch of Artemis I multiple times because of poor weather conditions and technical issues with the rocket, including a propellant leak.
With astronauts aboard for Artemis II, NASA has an emergency escape system on the launchpad for pre-liftoff issues.
It resembles gondolas on a ski lift, designed for the crew to quickly get to the ground. Four baskets, each the size of a small SUV, can whisk the astronauts down a set of cables to the perimeter of the launchpad. They can then board emergency vehicles and drive away.
In January, the agency reported that the baskets
stopped before reaching the pad perimeter during a test. Technicians adjusted the brakes.
But the most risk occurs as the rocket launches and begins its ascent.
“I will be holding my breath during that time,” Overmyer said.
In case of rocket failure in the first three minutes of flight, Orion is fitted with another escape system that will quickly eject the capsule from the rocket.
Orion will then reorient itself to land in the Atlantic Ocean.
Later in the flight but before the vehicle is in orbit, Orion can use its own engines for a similar purpose.

After nearly two hours, Orion will enter a high orbit above Earth, where the crew will test systems in flight for the first time. The crew will perform a piloting demonstration by flying Orion manually and simulating a docking maneuver.
Redundancies protect the crew during manual flight. If the hand controllers used to move the spacecraft malfunction on the pilot’s side, the commander can take over. Four solar panels power Orion’s electronics, though it can fully operate with just two. Three touch screens provide flight data to the crew, and a cursor control device allows the astronauts to interact with the software when their hands are unable to reach the screens.
It will also be the first in-flight test of Orion’s life support systems, which keep the capsule habitable for astronauts in space. This includes monitoring and maintaining temperature, humidity and pressure, as well as providing oxygen to the cabin, and removing carbon dioxide from it.
“We’ve tested it to death on the ground,” Overmyer said. “But it’s the first time we’re flying with it.” The systems are tested while in Earth orbit, which gives the astronauts an accessible off-ramp back home, should anything go wrong before they head to the moon.
Backup systems exist to control temperature, pressure and oxygen levels should any life support emergencies arise.
Impact with tiny meteoroids or fragments of debris from satellites pose another concern, though the chances are low.
Even objects less than about 4 inches in size can cause severe damage to a spacecraft. Last November, China delayed the return of three of its astronauts after discovering a window crack that experts suspect was caused by such a strike.
If all else fails, the astronauts can don their spacesuits, which are designed to keep them alive for up to six days by supplying air and maintaining pressure. The outer layer of the suits is also fire resistant.
On the second day of flight, Orion’s engine will send the capsule toward the moon. Eight auxiliary engines can perform all of Orion’s planned thrusts and maneuvers as a backup to the main engine. But the trajectory is also what engineers call “free return,” another safety measure that ensures Orion will arrive back home by coasting on the gravity of the moon and Earth, without the need for fuel.
Orion is scheduled to lose contact with Earth for 30-50 minutes when it travels behind the moon, which will block signals to and from the spacecraft. Mission control on the ground will upload the latest navigation data to the crew just before this stage to aid the capsule’s return if the crew is unable to reestablish communications.
Surviving the heat
It will take about four days for the Artemis II astronauts to return home from their loop of the moon. Upon reentering Earth’s atmosphere, Orion will race toward the surface at more than 20,000 mph, withstanding temperatures close to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit before landing off the coast of San Diego.
Orion’s heat shield is one of the most important safety measures of the mission. Made of material that transfers heat away from the spacecraft, the shield underwent more than 1,000 tests on the ground before being used in space with Artemis I in 2022.
Damage to the heat shield during this mission prompted investigations by NASA and independent experts, including 23 months of additional testing.
“We’re going to make sure that we’re staying within the bounds of the hardware,” Jeff Radigan, the lead flight director of Artemis II, said during a news conference for the mission in January. “That’s the right thing to do to keep our crew safe.”

Once through the heat of Earth’s atmosphere, parachutes will automatically deploy to slow the capsule before it splashes down. Landing in the ocean provides a softer cushion than the ground. Air bags around the top of Orion will inflate to keep the capsule upright after splashdown.
If the crew needs to suddenly leave Orion and drop into the ocean before a recovery team arrives, their suits are bright orange to be easily identifiable in the water. They are also equipped with survival kits.
At the news conference in January, mission directors stressed their commitment to getting the crew home safely.
“I got one job, and it’s the safe return of Reid and Victor and Christina and Jeremy,” John Honeycutt, who leads the Artemis II mission management team, said of the astronauts. “I consider that a duty and a trust. And it’s one I intend to see through.”

Libero Okiana Valle de Jesús of the Criollas of Caguas has won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the 2026 season of the Women’s Superior Volleyball League (LVSF by its initials in Spanish).
Her exceptional performance throughout the season established her as the league’s most impactful player, earning the Caguas native a wide margin of victory in the MVP voting over the LVSF’s standout attackers, setters and international reinforcements. Valle de Jesús garnered 389 votes. Trailing her, outside hitter Karla Santos of the Atenienses of Manatí received 232 votes, while setter Raymariely Santos of the Leonas of Ponce tallied 101.
Further back in the voting were Wilmarie Rivera and Helena Grozer -- both from the Cangrejeras of Santurce -- along with other standout figures such as Jordan Wilson (Ponce), Neira Ortiz (Santurce), Jenaisya Moore (Caguas), Andrea Rangel (Santurce) and Haley Bush (Juncos).
The vote distribution reflects a clear consensus among media outlets, fans, and authorized team representatives, all of whom acknowledged the competitive impact Valle de Jesús demonstrated in every match.
Upon learning she had been named the 2026 Season MVP, Valle de Jesús described the moment as a blend of surprise, gratitude, and a reward for her hard work. She acknowledged that the competition this year was intense and that, simply by being nominated she already felt thrilled and grateful.
“It was a tough year, with excellent players. Just being nominated was already an achievement for me,” she said. “But to be met with this surprise. … I feel grateful and
blessed. God knows when the time is right, and this year, the time was right.”
Valle de Jesús added that the season was not easy, but from day one, she worked with discipline and purpose, always with the goal of reaching this level. Even so, she confessed that her dream is not yet complete:
“I’m missing one thing ... winning the championship to make it a true dream season,” she said.
Valle de Jesús also emphasized that, although the award recognizes her individual performance, for her it is a deeply collective achievement. She pointed out that nothing she does on the court would be possible without the structure and trust provided by her team.
“This was a team effort, even though many people view it as an individual achievement,” she said. “If the block isn’t positioned exactly where it needs to be -- if the team doesn’t trust me, if they don’t give me the opportunity to do my job -- I simply cannot perform the way I do. I may be the MVP, but this award belongs to everyone -- to the entire team.”
Valle de Jesús noted that her progress over the course of the regular season was no fluke, but rather the result of an unwavering work ethic: “There are no breaks -- not even during water breaks. I am constantly looking for ways to improve: how to position myself, how to read the game. I watch videos day and night to study my opponents.”
The 28-year-old added that she still has one remaining goal: to break the all-time record for digs in a single match -- a milestone she has come close to reaching and continues to pursue.
Looking toward the future, Valle de Jesús said one of her aspirations is to play internationally in order to con-
tinue her professional development. Should that opportunity not materialize, her desire is to return to the Criollas to continue competing for championships and individual honors.
For her, growth must be a constant process -- both statistically and personally.
“Every year, I look for ways to demonstrate that growth -- whether through my numbers, my passing percentage, or whatever aspect applies,” she said. “But I also strive for personal growth.
“This year I achieved many things in that regard: learning to handle difficult situations, growing as a leader, helping my teammates, and also helping myself. It has been a different kind of year -- good in some areas and not so much in others -- but it has definitely been a great one.”
